Very understanding and cool. I thought the class would be rough at first with the essays being such a large % of the grade, but she is lenient with late work and offered a large extra credit opportunity also. She explains clearly what was good and bad with the essays. Exactly what one wants in a professor. Recommended.

AWESOME english teacher. She is very nice, lenient on late work and absences, and she is my favorite teacher so far at SMC. A lot of essays though, about 5 total that make up a lot of your grade. Easy to arrange office hours with her too. She has pass or fail quizzes, and HW is very easy and short as well. RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!

Dynamic, empathic, helpful, and lenient. She'll spend a lot of time clarifying any of your concern. Insightful evaluation of student's paper (she's more of a critic than a grader) which really helps me improve my writing. Strongly Recommended!

If I believe in monotheoism, she would be an angel. She really is. She's very understanding, and not too strict with deadlines. That doesn't mean you should take advantage of a kindness. She is the best english teacher I have ever taken!! Unlike the other ESL teachers, Prof.Kemper explains very clear and gives us the grading criteria, so we know what to expect for our grade. She offers 10 journals as 5% from 100% for an extra credit. A total of 20 Journals for the semester, 5 essays and one research paper.

Great teacher. Actually improves your writing. Easy teacher. Easy topics. You can write about anything you want. The only down side is that there's too much writing. Essay length increases with every essay. Longest is the 7-10pg research. And of course a journal for every reading. RECOMMENDED!

Great teacher! So helpful, funny and cute! She really explains things well, makes time after class for you to ask her questions, is always available by e-mail and is always willing to help you out. There is A LOT of writing involved in this course. 5 essays including a 10 page research paper and one in-class essay final. But it's a writing class so duh. Also, you build up to the page length of the research paper.I got an A in her class but I had to work very hard. However, I learned tons from her. My writing has improved SO much. Take her, her class is challenging in a good way.

Prof Kemper is one of the best English professors at SMC!! Not only is she helpful with all your questions/concerns but responds to emails promptly. She also lets you pick the topics you would like to write about which is great.

Extremely helpful and easy. She is a great teacher and is always ready to help you. She grades the essay easily and does not bother too much about your grammatical errors. She also gives you the essay topics one month before the essay is due. She is always cheerful and smiling. Definitely take her class.!!!!

Great teacher! Very nice and well organized. Pretty easy A. I got an A but I only got B's on my papers. Her grading criteria for her essays are pretty hard so make sure to take advantage of all the other easy work and deadlines you get points for throughout the semester. Make sure to do all the online excercises and dont miss any in-class essays!

Very helpful and easy going took her for winter (very fast paced but I made it). Offers alot of help and feedback. Works good with international students as well as regulars. Impossible to get lower than a B in this class. work, write, and pay attention. Based on 3 papers,2 written exams.

Very helpful and gives good feedback on essays. I took her in the Winter and I missed 2/3 tests and I still got a B! She isn't big on attendance as long as you work hard on your essays and I think she likes non-academic papers.

I took this class over the summer & it was a wonderful experience. She asks a lot of her students in terms of work output, but the intensity made me a better writer. She seems to truly love to teach & is very kind & helpful. Not easy, but totally worth it!! Several short in/out of class essays as well as several longer formal essays + final.

Kemper is an amazing teacher if u wan to learn Eng Literacy. I took Eng 2 in summer as a non-native speaker. I droped the class once but she encouraged me to continue. There are 12 in class promps (she will not picky your grammar)and 1 mid and 1 final. 3 take home essays(grammar is impor).She will try her best to help to get an A. It's not hard.

Many people just want an A but do not want to improve their English. As a non-native speaker, I took kemper in summer. I was in her class fall recently and she extremely helped me alot to improve my reading and writing skills. One student told me that she gives more advantage to the international students but her grades are fair! Please do not say something bad things about her just because you got B or less!

It took me until today to realize Kemper is a grade A college level professor. She may have a very passive aggressive perfectionist personality and it is certainly not easy to get an A in that class, but I've learned so much from her method of teaching. She is wonderful, although you won't get that initially. You get a lasting appreciation for her.

summer 6wk session: She's a difficult grader. You do learn, if you're after an easy 'A' or 'B', do not take. You'll learn to hate 'B+'s and wish you got a 'B'.

Incredible professor! She is very nice and willing to help you in your essays which are not that hard.Take the quizzes seriously because they can help you boost up your grade. Best english class I've had. She's extremely helpful, enthusiastic about the material, and taught it in a way that sparked my interest too. I learned a lot in her class, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone taking English 2. I even enjoyed poetry.

She teaches with passion and sparks interest. Make sure to read and annotate as it helps understand the material better. Randomly gives quizzes so read all the time because they will only help your grade. She is a hard essay grader, but is willing to help and ultimately makes you a better writer. Take her if you want to become a better writer!

Dawna is a lovely teacher, but is fierce. It's super manageable, but make sure you annotate and read because she does check and they go towards your grade. She also gives pop quizzes which are super simple; 5 questions, 1 word answers. 2 take-home essays - 5-6 pages, 4 in class critical responses. Make sure you have lots of access to a printer.

It was a difficult class yes, but the books that you read are books that you will keep with you forever. She is a tough grader, and has multiple pop quizzes, ALWAYS READ. Get good grades on the quizzes like A-, and get at least B's on her in-class essays and you will get at least an A-.

You have to read the book to do well on the pop quizzes. There are four essays and one final presentation. If you do the work, you can get an A.

Professor Kemper is helpful when you see her for one on one attention. Tends to treat students like high schoolers. There is extensive work for this class. Useless printing can be annoying. The class consists of numerous annotations, 3 novels, pop quizzes, in class critical responses, 2 essays, and a final exam essay. Must put in work for the grade

Professor Kemper was a cool, interesting teacher. Yes, she tends to assign a lot of work but definitely manageable. I suck at Eng and writing and still got an A.. Put in the work, annotate and read, participate a lot cause she will like u a lot better and you'll pass no joke. Highly recommend her.

She is so sweet and is very helpful. You need to read a lot of different books and poems for classes, but hey you are there to learn! You need to write some papers, if you need help she is there for you and helps you get there. All you need to do is to be present in classes and if you have questions go see her in her office hours.

She's a good teacher. Basically one must show up, do the work, and follow her directions to get an A. Not much to it.

Her essay topics were very tough. I ended up getting mostly C's on them and ended up getting a B in the class. She gives your work back pretty late and uses the Writer's Reference for half of the class semester. Do all your work and show up for class everyday and you'll do fine. If you want to get an A on your essays, do lots of research!

Okay, if you are thinking about taking her class, because it says she's hot; don't. She isn't. It's misleading. However, if you are looking for an English teacher with a passion for her subject, take her. She's like a utility infielder; not particularly great in any one area, but adequate in nearly all.

She is incredibly great! I got her in a summer session along with two other classes and I went to her class everyday energetic since I loved all the short stories she assigned. Poetry part is a little bit boring but she makes it interesting. Shekspear assignment was very interesting at the end of the semester. Prepare to read and participate.

I took her summer class because of her good rating on this website and it did not disappoint. She is CRYSTAL CLEAR on the criteria for all her assignments. Seriously. It's almost annoying how clear she is with her directions because she tends to repeat it over and over and over again. Bit of a tough grader, but allows a revision. READING EVERYDAY

Professor Kemper is a wonderful instructor to take if you enjoy poetry and plays. She made class engaging with her openness to hear everyone's feedback on the material. The two major papers are on Antigone & William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. I had never heard of either play and today, they are my favorite thanks to this instructor!

So this teacher really loves poetry and litterature but it can be tough to follow. She's passionnate and nice but it's hard. Lots of reading and annotating and pop quizzes. But in general she's a good teacher to take if you like to work and enjoy litterature.

Enjoyed her so much with Eng1 that I took her again for Eng2. She's so sweet and helpful and is accessible outside of class. As long as you read the material and do the prepwork she gives you for essays and such you'll be fine. There's really no reason to do bad in the class.

The sweetest lady. Im an English major, but at times I can find some English classes frustrating because they focus on overused or boring literature. Her material was fun, fresh, and her class was generally very straight forward. Gives you every opportunity to succeed. You can tell how creative of a person she is. An easy class, but I loved it.

Kemper was one of the best teachers I have ever had. Each class you can see the amount of passion she has towards reading and writing. Most classes consist of discussions of short sections she has you read. She really wants to hear her students opinions and insights on the works read. She truly cares for her students and wants them to improve!

Professor Kemper is not only the best Professor I've had at SMC, but one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life. With COVID she has been extremely willing to work around any difficulties you may have. It's an easy A as long as you complete every assignment, esp in Engl1. I've loved being in her class and I even took her again for summer! :)

Amazing professor. I took her class last semester and have nothing but good things to say about her. She grades fairly, is extremely caring, and was almost always available over email. She assigns a normal amount of work for an English class, but it was one of the most stress-free classes I have ever been in. Cannot recommend enough.

Best professor I've had at SMC. She is incredibly caring and genuinely wants her students to succeed. As long as you communicate with her, she will be understanding. There are a lot of discussions and they get repetitive, but honestly any class that includes canvas discussions will be like that, it's unavoidable. She's worth it!

Very cool and grades fairly, I'd say I got a higher grade than I deserved tbh. Very forgiving with due dates and extensions, didn't really penalise my late assignments. Seems that she genuinely cares for students and ready to help if needed, responds quickly via Canvas. Honestly I barely paid attention and got an A, her resources come in handy

I took an 8 wk course with Prof. Kemper so there were 3-4 discussions every week + responses. They were pretty easy and the many prompt options helped me understand the material. I appreciated her criteria for essays and assignments which helped me improve each week. Although I wish she didn't rush grading our papers at the end, I highly recommend!

Amazing professor! I took her for Eng1 & Eng2. Lots of reading (esp for 8wk course) and discussions are crucial! She gives tons of excellent feedback on each assignment and wants her students to succeed. She is inspiring and motivating, and overall a great person. Strongly recommend!!

Great teacher, very clear criteria but changes throughout the semester (for the better). Usually gave a 2-3 page paper every week and other small assignments, which got tedious but helped my writing improved. Final project was a 7 page paper and it was one of my strongest works.

Kemper is a great prof. I took her Eng1 course. Attendance does matter, didn't always have my camera on. Her grading criteria is very clear and she gives good feedback. Handful of small assignments each week + 1 essay. There was also a large final essay - research project. It's easy to get an A if you listen to her feedback. I'll take her for ENG2

She is a nice woman however, I don't like her grading style for me. I like to be able to see my grade as the semester goes by and her point system does not allow for that. She required the purchase of a course pack that was $80 when the material was available for free online as well as several other books.
