She as a person I am sure is nice, helpful, and overall smart. However, as a teacher I would say she is the exact opposite. She does not answer questions well, and she can NOT TEACH. Other students I quote said they left class more confused about chemistry. RUN!
Hey stop, picking on that teacher, no wait one second it's Dougherty. Oh then never mind. She ca'nt teach that is the bottom line. If you want to spend the majority of the time teaching yourself then go ahead. But i think that is a waste of money. Have Longley as a teacher instead!!!!
Never have I encountered an instructor who deliberately chooses not to allow her students to be successful. Officious, arrogant, flakey, unaccomodating, pompous, self-righteous-are a summation of her characteristics. Do NOT look to her for any sort of communication or interaction. She may be completely incapable of both.
Everytime I went to class, I left being more confused than when i read the book outside of class. Like other comments, if you like to teach yourself, still don't take this class. I recommend no one to take this class
I am amazed at the comments...really do not believe everything..she is a very organized teacher who kind of has a problem getting the point across to all students, but on a personal level she is really accessible and really helpful. Her notes are really helpful..exams are not that hard if you also use the textbook. Take her class!!!
I signed up for Chem 1020 in fall 07. After attending 2-3 classes I dropped. I was completely lost. She seemed to get frustrated with any questions. I think if I had taken more math prior to taking this class it would have really helped. She could not make her point in an understandable way, goes fast in ledctures but puts notes online.
Very nice lady - HORRIBLE teacher. I say that with no hostility, it's just fact. She knows chem but truly cannot teach. Makes mistakes often, then doesn't explain correct way to do prob's. Plan on learning only from the book and tutors. Class was more frustrating/ confusing than not attending class. Only went to class for xcr.
Do not take this class I had so much trouble understanding her lecture and by the way the median for the first two exams were 56% so I was NOT alone in being lost in lecture and when I needed help she wasnt that effective it was kind of condecending in ways ... never again
nearly every day, I would come in to class, having read the next section with a few questions, and leave with more. She is smart, but totally disorganized.
She is a nice person. HORRIBLE TEACHER. She gets lost almost everyday in lecture. Makes numerous mistakes in problems and doen't give you the propper way of doing the problem. Very hard to follow. Teach youself if you choose this teach.
SHe is always confused most of the time. She gave the same notes in class like last yr and madelots of mistakes while teacing
I took survey of chem. with her and it was AWFUL! She is a horrible teacher, she flew through the lecture making numerous mistakes. She had this pompous attitude that everyone should just already know everything, and would act like you were dumb if you asked a question. If I already knew the material, I wouldn't have been in that class!
A fantastic instructor, very helpful with questions. I see people complaining on her that her lectures were hard to follow. Thats because she would go over the material then somebody that wasnt paying attention would ask the exact question she just went over in class. PAY ATTENTION!!!!! I received an A in this class because I did the work.
A 5 week summer chemistry class is hard in general, it was nice to have a teacher who executed well. She was always prepared for lab/lecture. Presented material in a way that was easy to follow. I even missed 2 lectures and was able to pick up anything that I had missed right out of the book. She is very level headed and a great professor.
Very helpful and wants you to learn the material. Not the best during lecture though.
She is not nice. She teach in class after write by her own paper. She has no enough knowledge to tech in college. O I never see this kind of professor.
Dr. Dougherty is not an easy teacher. She expects you to know your material and to come to class prepared to learn. I have found her to be extremely helpful and available during lab and office hours. She's very receptive to the needs of students, adjusting her teaching style to best suit the needs of the class. Not an easy A, but attainable.
Mrs. Dougherty isn't a terrible or mean teacher,She is kind of nice but her teaching style just isn't the best. Answering questions to a large group seems to be a challenge for her and she makes mistakes in the presentation. For class content, she expects her students to know a lot of material. This class was a lot harder than I anticipated.
Clarity is the main issue with her in my opinion. Otherwise she is quite nice, and has a pretty forgiving grading system if you use it correctly.
I took her survey of chemistry class and to this date it was the worst class I have EVER taken. I am a straight A student and I received a C in this class. Maybe chemistry isn't my thing but I spent quite a bit of time studying. I had almost zero science background and I felt if I had more I would have been better prepared for this class, RUN!
Well too often when a student would ask her a question in lecture, she would respond as if the student asked a dumb question. There is a difference between if a student wasn't paying attention and if a student had a legitimate question :P
Summer Chem 1050 was a lot of material to handle, and this instructor did a terrific job of getting the knowledge into our brains. She was prepared, pleasant, accessable, knowledgeable, and human. The labs helped reinforce the material. I really enjoyed her teaching style, which was concise and inclusive of the general questions asked in class.
The condensed summer session moved FAST. Dr. Dougherty's lectures assumed that you had read the material in advance - the days I didn't read ahead I struggled to follow her. Exams were challenging, even when I felt prepared for them. Work was graded and returned in a timely fashion.
Dawne Dougherty is not a good teacher. The way she talks to students is like they're some sort of idiot. She doesn't make things understandable too well and her tests are something to really study for. I took Chemistry in high School and did very well, but she began confusing me like no other as well as other students.
Read the text book, then listen to her re-read in class.
She does have online printable notes which is nice. But she can't do her own problems, she don't proof-read any questions or homework and she cannot explain anything for the life of her.
Took her class she sucks! wouldn't recommend for anyone to take it. she is confusing and not well organized
HORRIBLE teacher. Just plain bad. I took her class and ended up knowing less than what I knew back in High School. She's confusing and has a very pompous attitude. I ended up skipping her class a lot of times and teaching myself. No point in attending her class. She sucks.
Very poor teacher. Unorganized, rude to students, can't solve her own problems, doesn't proof read her own test, quizzes, homework etc. Then you get confused by the wrong answers and the way she tries to explain things adds to the confusion. Wouldn't recommend.
Makes students feel bad for asking questions. Students actually apologize for asking questions, she makes students feel worthless and stupid. Pompous attitude. Not interested in students, probably wishes she wasn't a teacher.
its whatever, just follow along in the book... like all chem classes
Don't be intimidated by her. She really is a nice and helpful teacher body sometimes her body language doesn't match that. She allows students to do well with take home tests or throwing out a couple bad assignments. Fresh college students may not do well because she won't babysit and pamper you = take responsibility and stop complaining.
I liked the classes I took with her, I think she is a nice person, she knows stuff, probably not an awesome explainer but she will definitely help you have problems. easy tests and too much practice, good teaching methods and a very caring teacher.
Chemistry is wonderful. Don't let a bad teacher ruin it for you. She is a nice person but shouldn't be a teacher.
I am a straight A student. But I am not going to take any more classes with her. May be she is a good person but she lacks many things to be a teacher. After the third test the class is almost always half filled. Because she lacks the skill of engaging students to her class.
This teacher always gave us the resources necessary to get an A on every test. I had this teacher for 1061 and 1062 and she's constantly making her class better. She genuinely wants every student to be successful. She demands respect in her class and does not tolerate students being disrespectful. Bad reviews are clearly from lazy students.
An A in this class is definitely obtainable. She expects students to attend lecture(& pay attention), complete assignments on time, and be respectful. This is nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to a college course. If you work hard and listen in lab & lecture, she is great. If you are lazy and like to talk during class, try something else.
Very nice instructor and helpful as well. Always controlled the classroom learning environment and answered every question asked. Always available outside of class and in the Chem lab as well. I would take this class and recommend it to anyone!
I took Chem 1050 in the summer for 4 weeks and Mrs. Dougherty is very nice. She always asks if you have questions and answers them. I am not good at chemistry at all. You have to put the time in. Read along in the book, notes and Study for her tests and you should do fine.
She doesn't understand that if the whole class doesn't get the material, and we're trying and reading the book etc... that it's more than likely her fault.
she docent understand we have not done this chemistry stuff for the last 20 years like she has
3.0+ GPA student. The book was a bit hard to read. Problems done in class were sometimes wrong, provides practice exams and outlines that were extremely helpful, grading system was very reasonable (drops lowest quiz&lab, replaces exam grade if you do better on that certain material on the final). Easy, but you need to put effort into this class.
Dawne is a great teacher. After reading this website I was hesitant to have her but she is so great. Dawne is nice, she cares, she wants you to succeed and she is willing to help. You JUST HAVE TO ASK. The students who complain about her are the students that gave up in their heads already. It is a difficult class, but she is a fantastic teacher.
This teacher is alright. Talks in circles and gets corrected by students a lot! Even on tests. Makes me wonder about our final. Because you don't get that back. Other than that-Labs are great. Sometimes you get done early. Don't miss 2 Labs or u instantly fail. She provides a lot of notes on D2L.the course is not easy. I did summer course.
HORRIBLE. She does not help at all. She does not know how to explain anything which can be very frustrating and her monotone voice makes you zone out. I strongly do not recommend anyone to take this professor unless you want to spend most of your time in the tutor center & reading out of your book. You will pretty much have to teach yourself.
She's a brilliant professor. As long as you put forth the effort there's no reason you can't get an A or even a B. She doesn't have a lot of patience and makes mistakes but that just means more extra credit points given to assignments and quizzes. Don't be afraid to challenge or correct her. She teaches based off PPT.
Avoid this teacher! Has a mediocre understanding of the material herself. Has zero talent for relaying info to others. She looks to the class for affirmation of understanding and not a single person responds. She covers material way to quickly. Maybe talented chemist but horrible teacher.
Where do I begin? As a first semester student, I struggled with her unclear instructions on D2L. Even after I figured out the navigation, she would not alert the class when assignments would be posted. She had a very condescending attitude and treated answering questions as a chore. Awful teaching skills, rude behavior, and was entirely confusing.
Avoid this professor. I believe she is confused herself as what is going on in this class. Horrible at announcing when things are due and is so unorganized. Very boring personality and rude which makes it hard to pay attention. I have been attempting to teach myself as she does no help for me.
Very helpful if you come to her she always make time. She allows students the choice to come to lecture and she gives extra credit work to help improve your grade.
At first I thought she was ok, but now it's finals in two weeks, we have two more chapters to do, she hasn't graded papers in two weeks, there's no test review for the final and she's going on vacation foe a week leaving us with a sub. IDK maybe that's not a bad thing.
She is really nice teacher, her exam is easy as long as you attend class and study for it. she gives homework, but their easy and are based on what you learned that week. but she doesn't except late work even you have excuse. other then that if you follow her syllabus you should pass with A or B.
She does't look over lecture material before she presents it. Very unenthusiastic about everything. Always expects you to know what you are doing even if it hasn't been covered at length. She does not encourage questions and when asked, gives poor unclear answers.
Worst prof EVER! She cannot teach! She very frequently leaves her notes in her office and cannot even draw the simplest structure. She is never clear on what is required on an assingment and changes the rules. Also she always promises to post updated material and rarely does. She is lazy and clearly does not know the material or is uninterested.
Worst professor I've ever had. She is knowledgeable but can't teach. I recommend if you have to take Chem 1020 any professor would be better than her.
TERRIBLE teacher! NO enthusiasm, condescending, disorganized.Treats class as if we are H.S. students.Useless & confusing lectures.DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!I am ending up teaching myself the material on YouTube.Save yourself the GPA and frustration and take any other teacher! Also in general, have intermediate algebra skills even though it isnt required.
knowledgeable on material, tested only on material taught in class. Provided many online resources for studying and help, but wasn't as helpful in class. Taught material thoroughly and went in depth with material.
Worst instructor I've ever had! I had no previous chemistry knowledge so this class was a nightmare. She was confusing, boring, and not helpful. She's knowledgeable about the material but she doesn't know how to teach. If you have to take chemistry any instructor is going to be better than her.
I thought Mrs. Dougherty is a pretty easy teacher. She provides homework, quizzes, practice tests and study guides before you take the tests so you know exactly what you need to study. She also takes the class before the test to go over your exam study guide. As long as you show up, ask questions when you have them and do your work, you're golden.
Professor Dougherty is one of the hardest grader! Her test are 100 points, her multiple choices are 4 points each, that's like 4 percent each! there are like 15 multiple choices so thats more than 50 percent of your test if you mess up. She doesn't like having office hours, and makes excuses. Her handwriting isnt the greatest, notes are handwritten
WORST TEACHER EVER! She sounds like she doesn't want to be there. She hates questions and is very short with people. The class average on the final exam was a 'D'. STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLASS AS YOU CAN!
Be prepared to read the textbook. Notes are confusing and can be wrong, so clarify everything with herthe book before an exam. Studied from practice exams and had wrong answers on keys. Does not post in a timely fashion. Writing is illegible often. Quizzes often don't reflect exams. Not recommended.
Let me tell you this, most of the times when students ask questions, she has only one answers: I don't know. Her handwriting is impossible to read, so I just gave up taking notes on her class. No matter how emergency your situation is, she is NOT willing to let you take the exam even an hour after. You can get wrong information from her. Very bad.
She is absolutely AWFUL! Do not take her. She's unbelievably condescending, boring, has horrible handwriting, and gets a lot of material incorrect. The only reason I passed this class is because I had taken more advanced classes already (but they didn't transfer). She will begin a problem and give up since she doesn't know how to solve it herself.
Not willing to help you and doesn't know how to present the information to her students.
Everything on here is accurate. I deeply regret not checking this website before registering. Normandale needs to send her packing.
Found majority of test questions from a quiz bank online. Questions often did not correlate or reflect lecture material we were given. Info was sometimes wrong, and test corrections were often wrong as well. Overlooked errors in info and dismissed the textbook when questioned. Fought for points back more than twice. Unclear expectations for exams.
Everyone's being a bit too negative on here.. Dougherty knows her stuff and gives her students the material needed to pass. Chemistry is HARD and you are going to have to work at it. Give yourself time to learn the material, and time to finish the assignments and do them correctly! I will say she is EXTREMELY unapproachable. You will learn a lot.
She rambles off the top of her head and expects us to follow along and when we don't she responds rudely. I'm getting through this class because I'm getting help from friends, going to the tutor center, and teaching my self 100% of the time. She is also a very intimidating person, very unapproachable.
Professor Dougherty is smart, but she treated us like we were unintelligent elementary schoolers, besides the few favorites she had in the class. Whenever I tried to ask a question, she would act extremely annoyed and give me a vague answer. More than half the class dropped by the end. The study guides are very similar to the exams.
Reads powerpoints word for word, very boring lecture. I could read the powerpoints on my own time. She does not help, I have asked on several occasions and have gotten a death stare. Does not cover topics thoroughly, so expect to teach yourself a lot.
She was a perfectly adequate teacher. If you ask for help she will definitely be there for you and do her best to help. It's not an easy A class, you do have to work for it but compared to other chemistry teachers she was pretty good. There is not much homework at all.
Dr. Dougherty is a very smart, professional, and a pleasant individual. But some of us aren't as smart when it comes to chemistry. The lecture power-points are read word for word. There isn't much additional information given to help aid in understanding the topic. I recommend printing the online notes because she wont give you time to take note
This website is very inaccurate towards Dr. Dawne she's really good at what she does, and hey its Chemistry were talking about not art, your going to have to put some effort, it's not a walk in the park. I promise if you study at most 1-2 hours a day your golden. I highly recommend you guys to take her. Don't be fooled by lazy students.
She wants to get through material asap. If you ask questions, she makes you sound stupid saying things like "of course, well yeah, obviously" with a chuckle and gives death stares. She has pop quizzes, and grades tests viciously. She's not one to help or give direct solutions. I would not recommend her at all.
Her online videos for biochem are insufficient and lack the information that she puts on her exams. She directs you towards book, but tests are two-three weeks apart from each other with 4-7 dense chapters each. She does not hold in-office hours anymore, only online for us. Tough course, bad lectures - I'd rather take this course at the U of MN.
Dr. Dawne is pretty intimidating; it was very clear that everyone was afraid of her. She knows Chemistry well, but talks very fast and uses complex terms that she assumes you already know. This class requires a lot of effort, so a passing grade depends on daily reading and studying. Overall, I thought she was ok.
She's great teacher if chemistry come really easy to you. If it doesn't you're gonna be in for a ride. Her powerpoints are pointless all she does do example problems the entire hour. Although she's very helpful during her office hours, but she isn't as helpful in class. Labs are busy work since she makes you write the procedure in a journal.
I am not a lazy student, I get all A's and B's. That being said Dr. D is NOT a good prof. She knows a lot about chemistry but teaching is not her thing. Everyone in the class is scared of her. There are no real lectures, she just does examples but doesn't actually TEACH the material. Be ready to regret having her as a professor.
Mrs. Dawne is a good teacher and understands her chemistry. It's sad that frustration on hard material is blamed on her :( She is a detailed grader, but she is fair. Yes, the course is hard, but she will help and answer questions. If you get to know her, she is kind! She even extended due dates on Sapling because most of us forgot to do it.
Not approachable and gets snarky when asked questions. She radiates a vibe of frustration that clearly tells everyone that they are on their own. If you are completely forced to take her: attend lectures, make sure you get all work done (there is a lot), and review all homework before tests.
She is nice but kind of passive aggressive. Class was really tough and I found her pretty accommodating, though. Definitely not a bad professor for an online course but definitely a tough class. Be prepared to be on your A game in this class. I don't understand proctored exams. If you're so concerned about students cheating, then why have a test?
Although the professor is nice and all, taking chemistry online during this pandemic was hard enough. The labs were fun, but I felt like the sapling assignments were a little difficult and so were the tests, and the lectures werent even made by her. I felt like I had to teach myself a lot during the class. Just make sure you do everything.
She doesn't respond to emails at all, basically have to teach yourself the entire class. Not sure what I paid for.
Dr. D is a terrible teacher. She constantly misses class yet is so inflexible when it comes to students having to miss class. She skims over material without going in depth and then gives super hard tests. She doesn't seem passionate about her job in the slightest and looks miserable every day. I would absolutely never recommend taking her class.
Nice but is not always lenient with grading. She expects most of your learning to come from the textbook and watching the videos. She will only of over problems in class. Lots of exams, make sure to study the textbook. In Lectures, she does over problems so come prepared and already knowing the weekly material. Sucks at emailing back. Take notes.
Taking this class over the summer. Incredibly stiff yet I can't even count how many mistakes she makes. Test questions have incorrect answers and she isn't willing to discuss despite being her mistake. Of course, she doesn't even teach. All learning content is from textbook, she didn't teach a single topic.
Not a kind individual.... The fact that she didn't teach a single topic during my course doesn't help my respect level. When I raised issue with a test question, I got a robotic reply and then ignored when I gave my argument. If you wanna get chem out of the way, buy the textbook and test out of it, same content and much cheaper.
I have never encountered a professor like her. She is unresponsive, does not care about her students, and does not teach a single thing. I learned everything from youtube videos and taught myself. She makes mistakes herself and doesn't take accountability for them. If there is any other teacher option, take them. Not her.
This professor will not answer your emails for concerns or questions, and in the rare chance that she does, her replies are robotic and unhelpful/doesn't answer your concerns. Also is very disorganized with schedules and assignments. Tons of homework from different chapters will be due on the same date.
Dr. D is a difficult teacher. Is passive-aggressive and has a cold personality. Her lectures are hard to understand due to disorganization and never finishes explanations. She expresses she wants people to come to her for help but when you do she makes excuses and blows you off. Questions that she thinks you should know, she will not answer them.
The class was very difficult and her lectures were, at least for me, almost impossible to learn from. She would quickly go over 1-2 examples of how to do a problem with only a brief explanation, and when taking notes you would have to frequently stop because you could not read her writing. She was not very organized but slightly forgiving on work.
She was unwilling to accept mistakes she made and made you feel like it was your mistake and was inconvenient to her. Reluctant to schedule outside of her zoom office hours due to work schedule. Intimidating personality. May know her sciences but teaching it isn't her calling.
The reviews here made it seem like she was a horrible teacher but that is not true at all. Sure her personality is cold but that's all. Her teaching is great as well as the labs. It is clear what you have to do. If you fail or are doing horrible that is honestly on you. You have to put time/effort as you would in any course.
Class was a disaster. Prof was wildly unorganized. Lots of errors on tests, homework, etc.
One of the worst experiences I've had at Normandale. In labs, she's incredibly harsh, and if you ask her a question, she'll only ridicule you for not listening to her instructions instead of helping, which are also confusing. I've seen her yell at students for being late to the lab and not letting them in, confusing lectures. stay away if you can!
worst professor I have ever had. She was rude when answering questions and would not provide study material for the exams until the day of.
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews. To be honest, she is the most comfortable chemistry prof I have met so far. She posts all the slides and PPT before class. There r a lot of extra credits. She also posts all the practice tests, which are really helpful for the exams. You are free to use elec devices to take note, etc.
Many extra credits for each chapter. You can try her class, she provides almost every resource for the tests as long as you work hard
I think she is a pretty good professor. Her notes in class that go along with the exercises are quite easy to understand. Please do not be late for the LAB. During lectures, you can use electronic devices to take notes P/s: some professors at NMD may not like students using electronic devices in class, but Prof. Dougherty is Okay, please feel free
Overall she is an okay professor, at the start of the semester she was very rude to me when I would ask questions for a little extra help. I get scared to ask questions now. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. a lot of assignments close after the due date and will not re open.
If you're reading this, it's too late. Good luck. Dr. D is cold, harsh, and scary like your mom when you forget to do the dishes. She never smiles. I asked one question and got a stare so evil that it made me rethink my life. She grades like she's mad at you. Be smart. Take chem with literally anyone else. Save yourself
This "professer" shouldn't have been given the name of teacher. Her lectures are so confusing, doesn't teach what is going to be on the exam, very rude, tough grader in everything. the cengage assignments dont even help you study for the exam. DO NOT TAKE HER. very lazy when teaching too. save yourself before it's too late.
Please. Do. NOT. Take her. Avoid at all costs. Her lecture notes make no sense, Cengage homework assignments don't help and don't align with prepping for the exams. You'll end up teaching yourself most of the material. Take someone else, even if you have to wait a semester. DO NOT TAKE HER save yourself. Your future self will thank you.
