His powerpoints are very good. His lectures come right out of the textbook so as long as you have the textbook your notes don't have to be very detailed. For the first midterm I found that as long as you knew the definitions and basic concepts you could get an easy A. Intro psych for the win!
Super monotone, just rambles on during his lectures about stuff he later decides you probably didn't need to know. Doesn't give you any sort of test review which given all the unnecessary detail he covers would be kind of handy. The averages on all of his tests are 70% at best. He's just not very good at explaining the concepts at all.
I really like Dawson, he's a pretty good prof. I understand the material quite well and his midterms are fair. I'm hoping this final will be fair as well. Dawson, if you're reading this, please make the final easy. You need to know the notes, his notes and he likes to give examples and then YOU pick the definition.
I liked this class. I didn't go to all the lectures because if you study the notes from UM Learn, you will do well. It was pretty easy material to understand and he made it interesting.
Dr. Clary is a great, I enjoyed his teaching. He provides powerpoints on UMlearn and explains it all in full detail in class. His midterms were easy, the first one was a bit tough because I didn't know what to expect, but the second one was better. Unfortunately, he's the only psych1200 prof that has a final, which was wayharder than the midterms.
He was very good at explaining things. His powerpoints were clear and he had good examples for topics. He shows some videos in class to make you remember difficult concepts better. Very good prof, would take his class again.
he is a good prof i really liked him, he's one of my favourite profs. except he makes his finals so hard. i just wanted to get an A but i don't think I'll be able to after the final today. His notes are great and answers questions when needed. Shows video to help understanding. i hope he pulls through and curves the final.
His lecture slides are very in depth. He explains things pretty clearly. He also shows videos on bigger concepts or studies. If he doesn't go over something in class then it won't be on any of his exams. His midterms were pretty easy but his semester end finals are significantly harder. Using the textbook isn't necessary but its helpful.
Dawson Clary is one of my favourite profs! Slides are posted on D2L and they are precise and straightforward. Videos are shown to understand some concepts and WILL be tested on. Occasionally ends class early, which is a bonus. Attend class, because he adds info to his notes. His midterms are easy but finals are VERY tough. So much harder!!
Dawson is a pretty good prof. He doesn't deviate from the textbook and he posts all of his slides online. No assignments, although he's apparently the only PSYC1200 prof who has a final exam. Exams are pretty easy (a few of them had a class average of 85%)! He has review classes for the exam, and after the exam he goes over the questions in detail.
Dawson is an awesome prof! The use of pictures in his slides always help me remember the definitions an aid in his teaching! He also always makes his slides available before hand. His exams are very fair! If you attend class and read his powerpoints then you should be on track to receive your desired grade! Very knowledgable and helpful in person!!
First, if you have the option, take this class online (I had friends take the class and we compared notes... 100x easier). Dawson was a good prof, he gave TONS of extra information that was not on his powerpoint slides, so you NEED to take notes. Overall though he was a nice guy, exams weren't bad either. 8/10.
Dawson is a super good prof. He uses lots of pictures and videos in addition to his written power point notes to aid in understanding of difficult concepts. He explains concepts thoroughly in class and adds a lot of examples, so it's important to go and take good notes in order to succeed.
Most of the grade comes from tests and the exam. His notes were accessible online which was super helpful for studying. He was clear when explaining things but there were a lot to study so you still have to study HARD for tests. The tests and exams were all multiple choice but there are some odd questions so study EVERYTHING. Including small stuff.
Very good prof. Keeps things too the point. Kept the class interesting, showed little videos, and gave good examples. Textbook isn't totally necessary since he made slides and uploads them for students. Take notes in class cause he makes sure that people who show up to class will get a good grade on exams. Would highly recommend.
Dawson was my favourite prof. The videos he plays in class break up his lecturing and course material is super interesting. He goes over exams the class which is helpful. He is good at reviewing before exams. This class is an easy A. Test material came right of the slides.
Tests are all multiple choice and based on lectures and slide notes. He posts his slides on Nexus in case you miss a day. Questions on test are more about application vs. definition. Overall he is a really nice professor which is eager to help and also once in awhile shares photos of his pet cat and parrot named Alice.
Dawson is a really nice and hilarious prof. He explain his slides very well and you can tell he is very knowledgeable in this subject. Entire grade was made up of 8% research participation and 92% is 6 tests throughout the year that are only multiple choice. Very easy class and its absolutely amazing with Dawson. Highly recommended taking it.
Dawson is a very nice prof. He signs all of his emails with "Cheers, Dawson" which is super heart-warming. Before he came a prof he studied brains of birds which is kinda cool I guess. He always has something in his throat, and according to him he's always froggy. He describes himself as a guy who likes frisbees. That's his hobby. Straight beauty.
Notes are all deffintions, and exams are most situational questions.. so read the textbook for examples and dont go to class. Lectures are boring and hard to keep focus, all notes/deffintions posted online.
Dawson is probably one of the best Psychology professors you'll find on campus. He gives good explanations, shows videos during class and keeps things interesting with a sense of humour! Textbook/attendance not mandatory, but I would recommend it as tests can be difficult and involve lots of memorization. Overall a laid back guy & ends class early!
Dawson made coming to class fun! He is very clear and tests only on material covered in class. There were 6 non-cumulative MC tests with no final. Pay attention and you'll be fine. Shows lots of videos and uses many anecdotes. He's a lot of fun!
He showed amazing videos which greatly facilitated learning. His tests were fair and challenged you to be able to do more than just memorize.
Dawson is a nice guy. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. I'm taking PSYC1199 with him and although he doesn't require us to read the text, I find reading the materials before coming to class helps.
Had him for psych 1200, super good prof and a Easy-A course. His exam questions are all applied concepts so make sure you understand his examples. Show up to class because he does add in details that arent in the slides. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK - he said it himself you do not need it. Best prof Ive had in uni by far.
Take a class with Dawson. Prepares you for tests and teaching style is really good. Do not buy the text book for Psych 1200.
Amazing prof!! He uses hilarious examples to make the material really stick in your mind. His grading is fair, and he genuinely cares about all of his students. Would 100% recommend!
I LOVE DAWSON. He is my favourite. His tests are super easy, and you only need 2 brain cells to get an A to be honest... even if you study the night before like I did (yikes!) or don't show up to class (also guilty).
Dawson is by far my favourite prof at the U of M. He likes to show videos in class that really help you understand the course content. There are only 6 tests in the class and they mostly consist of applied questions so his class is more about understanding the lectures and less about memorizing definitions word for word.
I found Mr. Clary to be an excellent Psychology professor! I found his lectures easy to follow and for the most part, to be quite entertaining. I believe he really cared about his students success in the class. The one negative thing I would note would be the occasional test question that seemed a bit too difficult for the content taught in class.
One of my favourite profs. Posts lecture slides beforehand and supplements the slides well with information in the lectures. Loves when people ask questions and makes sure everyone understands before moving on to the next topic. Also has a review class before every test. If you pay attention in class its an easy A.
Amazing prof, best prof I have had. He is understanding and passionate. His lectures are actually engaging and interesting.
He was an excellent prof! One of my favorites! His lectures were very interesting and engaging. His tests are not cumulative and are easy if you study, and there is no final exam. I would say that is an easy A.
Dawson was a great prof. His lecture were always engaging and funny. I found that the tests were sometimes worded oddly to the point where it was hard to understand what the question was. Overall it was not a tough class but if you want an A you have to understand everything inside and out.
Best prof Ive had so far!! Super nice and clear and adds a bit of humour to the lectures! Class isnt mandatory as he posts lectures online but if you want a B or higher then the extra notes he adds to the lectures are extremely helpful and his humour twist makes them memorable! Would definently love to have him as a prof again
Dawson is the most interesting prof I've had at UofM. His lectures are interesting, always holds review periods before tests, uses videos/examples to relate to younger students for his content since most of the class are first years. If you contact a former student they can send you test bank answers that he uses on all his exams for an easy A.
Dawson is the biggest beauty at the UofM. He hands down has the best lectures with his engaging, thorough, and clear definitions that will allow you to master each term if you take notes. I am very much considering becoming a psyc major just to take 2 more classes with him, which is a risky career decision, but in this case it's entirely appropriat
THE BEST PROF IN U OF M! He is extremely funny, and he made his lectures so interesting and easy to understand. If you go to class, you won't even have to study for your quiz as it just sticks to your head like THAT! 10/10 would highly recommend everyone to take Psych1200 with prof!
Clary always gave very clear and interesting lectures that communicated his passion for the subject. He was respectful towards students and in the lecture prior to the exams, he allowed time for students to ask clarification questions. Of all my first year university professors, he is definitely the one I enjoyed the most. He is just a good person.
Super great prof. Entertaining and easy to follow along with. Posts all of his info so you don't really need to go to class if you don't want to. Exams weren't very hard. Easy to coast through the class and get a decent mark.
I did this online over the summer so the lectures were optional considering he just posted them to UM learn. However I found watching the lectures extremely helpful and when doing exam could remember certain things he mention to help me. Did not open the textbook, exams based on lectures and notes only
Super interesting course, very knowledgeable prof. He gives examples and explains the concepts discussed which is what he expects in the test instead of memorizing definitions. He is willing to explain many times until completely understood. Great at communicating outside class. Some multiple choice questions/answers were confusing.
Dawson switched to u of w and I took his cognitive psych class and it was one of the hardest classes I've taken. Online exams 75 questions in 75 minutes which is fine except for when he makes the questions the hardest questions you could think of. If you don't understand the full concept behind every single thing taught you 100% will not do well
I took his cognitive psych class at the u of w. His tests were wildly hard and extremely stressful to get through. If you plan on taking this class be prepared to take notes on every word he says as well as all course material from the text book even if he doesnt cover it in class. He will throw anything at you in his tests. Goodluck!
Provides clear information, brings in pets for lectures. Amazing and fun
Good prof! You definitely have to study for his exams, its not just definitions, he is all about concepts and understanding. His videos lectures are great, uses lots of real world examples to help you understand. Dont buy the textbook for psyc 1200 in his class anything he says is off the textbook directly!
He is a super kind professor and the class is very straight forward. You do not need the textbook to pass.
dawson clary is best
Dawson was an amazing professor. I took PSYC1200 with him online due to Covid. It was a six credit hour course with 4 non-cumulative exams. We were also graded on class discussions but as long as you wrote a short paragraph and commented on someone else's you got full marks. It was an easy A+ and he provided really enjoyable lectures. Great prof!!
Dr Clary is great, he's passionate about what he teaches and really wants students to do well. Lectures are outlined very clearly and the content is super accessible, he pulls real life examples for most concepts to make it easier. Very engaged with the class and kind but exams are hard, more concept based than definition. Don't need the textbook
The class was all online, no zoom lectures. His prerecorded videos were pretty clear and easy to follow. If you followed the videos and took proper notes then youll have no problem on the exams. Was available by email most of the time and was very helpful
I loved Dawson. He is a really great professor and teaches things clearly. He is always happy to answer questions on things that are unclear. Clearly stated his expectations, and I think everyone in my class did well. Made the lectures interesting and tried to connect with his students. Great prof
HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR. just attend the class he will help in any way he can.
Dawson is an incredible teacher and incredibly engaging, empathetic, caring and genuine! He grades hard and really expects you to know your content in and out. Tests are no joke! But he does go above and beyond to work with you and make all the material very teachable!
He's great! Open to receiving criticism, enthusiastic and passionate about his work. Tests are difficult, but as long as you're actively paying attention and seeking knowledge you'll be golden. He told us not to get the textbook but our TA said we should... a lack of communication there. (I didn't get one and it was fine.)
Was a very good course to take, are able to watch the lectures on your own time and he explains everything very clearly. Very nice guy and is pretty easygoing. The exams are very difficult and you need to really apply the things he teaches, not just memorize.
good professor easy grading criteria and easy study ways
I found his lectures so good. He makes it super interesting by using lots of examples and this course in general is very interesting. There is 4 noncu. exams, discussion posts, and studies to participate in. Exams are more application than memorization, but if you know the material you will be fine. I got the textbook but never ended up using it.
Prof. Clary is awesome! Lectures are very easy to follow and understand, and he is very approachable if you do not understand something. Tests are very difficult, but as long as you know the material they are not that bad.
The exams are pretty difficult. There’s 4 exams worth 20% each. I feel like he could give us more time to complete the exam. An hour is not enough for 60 questions.
Super great prof. Follow the learning objectives for each chapter and you will do great! Lectures are interesting stick through to the second and third exam they are easier than 1. Definitely take time to understand the concepts because he tests on the application, not the definition. Three exams, no textbook, 8 studies, 12% discussion posts.
Very funny, he explains his content well. However, there are different A0-, I believe there are about 9 different classes... they are all the same videos. He recorded the content once and then gave it to all classes, seems like he should not being paid as much if all 9 classes have the same videos and he has TA's for each class except for one.
Tests are pretty difficult. Not a gpa booster.
Psychology with Dr. Clary was great, the content is really heavy in the course, I learned so much about not just the content but about my study habits and how to study better for a content-heavy course. While I didn't get the mark that I wanted this class was very enjoyable with the discussions.
Fun class, great prof. Concepts are easy to grasp and Dawson presents them well, but don't be deceived! The tests are not easy! You really have to study and memorize the terms and concepts. Overall an enjoyable class especially once you get into your stride.
Dr. Clary is super engaging in his lectures and explains things very very well. The testing material is hard if you don't prepare, but if you review things well it should be an decently easy class. Dr. Clary answers emails and is very encouraging when you get a bad mark. overall great prof and great course.
One of the best profs out there. So helpful and the lectures were amazing. 10000% recommend.
The best you can get for a professor. There were pre-recorded lectures, online discussions, research participation, and four tests. The lectures were very well done and easily understandable. DO NOT focus on the negative reviews, since this course rewards your effort! All you need to do is understand the main points and you'll 100% ace the course.
I think this class really teaches you what study method works best for you. But don't waste your time trying to figure out which method works best for you. Just focus on understanding the concepts and what he says during lectures then you should be good to go for the exams.
His lectures were really enjoyable and his slides always have lots of visuals that make it interesting! He explains things very well, making the concepts easy to understand. The first exam is the hardest but they get better and easier once you get the hang if it.
Overall excellent. Did not get a chance to meet the Professor in person as it was an online course, but his personality is so fun! Very interesting Pre-recorded lectures, and He seem very caring. Would take again!
He makes sure you understand what he is teaching rather than cramming but i would really recommend you to watch his lectures, write notes and understand. He made psychology challenging which is really fun. He is a greater lecturer.
He is one of the best professor anyone can have. I would only recommend to put more focus on discussions because they contains lots of marks.
Clary is the best professor I have had so far! Just 4 mcq quizzes and few side assignments. He's super funny and chill plus makes learning extremely interesting. (kind of had a baby crush on him) Overall, great course, you should take if you're into psyc.
I had this class online and asynchronous. Dr. Clary provided us with many prerecorded lectures and extra videos for extra comprehension. His lectures and PowerPoints were neatly organized and easy to follow. He's funny and charming. Sometimes he even features his parrot and cat in his videos :). Loved him and his humour! Literal gem.
He has a good personality, however he is a very hard grader.
Dawson is easily one of the best professors I have ever had while attending the UofM. His lectures were recorded but split up into shorter videos, which realy helped keep me engaged. The only thing that I didn't like was all my assignments were graded by a TA since he taught so many sections. This left some confusion with what was expected of us.
Dr. Clary was one of the best professors I have ever had. I did the course online and his videos were very well-done, engaging, funny, and informative. The tests were challenging but fair. He was always available via email if you had questions. I wish all all my Psych classes were taught by him!
Short lectures with clear concepts and explanations. Funny and cares about students. Good slideshows and examples. Lucky to have him, even if it was online. If I was a psych major I would take all of his classes.
Took it in fall21 and winter22. Didnt put much effort into the course but if you do all discussions and watch all videos on time, this is a easy course. Exams were a little challenging as you have to memorize a lot, but it isnt too bad. Posted short lecture videos for each chapter which were easy to follow.
Honestly, the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are great and very interesting. His teaching style is super engaging as he has fun videos, games, and other things to help facilitate learning along with his lectures. I learned so much from him and actually had fun doing it! Highly recommend him as a Professor. Also, he has a cool parrot :)
Professor Clary is AMAZING! 10/10 Recommend. super easy going, accommodating, great online lecture videos that are easy to understand and follow along with
This course was mostly online and can choose to attend discussions to clarify topics. Dawson is great at explaining certain concepts and relating it to real world situations. There's a lot of topics to cover but they give you a schedule you can follow. Can use the research participation to increase your mark a bit. Makes it interesting with videos.
I took this class online, he breaks down the material into short lecture videos so it doesn't feel overwhelming trying to watch long 30 min videos, rather 6- 15 min long videos. He does a very good job explaining and coming up with easy to understand examples
He's really entertaining and explains things very simply and concisely. If you're searching for a great psych professor, I highly recommend him.
This prof is so amazing, he is really engaging and it's a really fun online course. I would highly recommend him if you're interested in psych, or even as an elective!
I absolutely loved his class, he made it super easy to learn and his lectures were really easy to understand. overall amazing class that was well organized. also very accommodating and understanding
Such a great professor! He mad everything very fun and interesting and he went above and beyond to make sure we understood the concepts
If you fail his class - it's 100% your fault. I took distance ed, however, I still bought the textbook, and it was extremely close to what his lectures were on. Exams are clear and questions came from Video Lectures and Slides. His cat occasionally makes appearances in the videos and you get to hear a bird in the background.
Great prof, online class helpful through emails. He offered to give me in person guidance when i did poorly on an exam. The mark isn't what i wanted but if you try hard and not leave things to the last minute you'll be ok. Lectures are easy to follow, straight forward, information is super clear. I highly suggest having him as a prof if you can.
I took the distance course and it was great. The recorded lectures were short and interesting and he is very entertaining. Exams are very application based so be ready to think outside the box. Great course!!
Expectations are very clear, recorded lectures are engaging, easy to follow, and informative. Perhaps the easiest course you could ever take in all honesty, so definitely worth taking even if only for a GPA booster.
Dawson's outlines tell you exactly what you need to know for the tests, so as long as you follow them you're good. I took the distance course, he does his best to keep the powerpoints interesting and engaging. Always responds back in a timely manner. Awesome prof, Take his class !
He's so good at teaching but you'll probably get his TA teaching you. pick him if you get the chance.
dawson explains information very clearly in his lecture videos, and also puts informative slideshows. only downside is he has a TA teaching his class who doesn't really have a clue on what to do, so its hard to learn. no study guide provided for exams. if it were him teaching the class himself and not a TA, I think it would be a lot better.
His lectures are really engaging and he shows his bird, Alice and his cat too. He also responds to emails very quickly. Sorry to the guy below me, but our TA, Dallas Murphy is awesome. He explains the content very well and is very funny during classes. You must study for psychology though, don't abandon it and you're sure to get a good grade.
His pets wondered into his videos at times and he used them as examples for his lectures. His notes and explanations were very easy to understand. He uploaded videos in a timely manner. The online quizzes were a little challenging but overall a great professor and easy course specially for first year students.
I think that this was a very engaging first year course. It was one of my favourites throughout the year. The lectures were extremely easy to follow, but the exams were surprisingly challenging, but it's university, so that's to be expected. Overall, this was a great course, if you have a chance, take him!
I took this course online during the pandemic. Dawson's lecture videos were very easy to follow and he provided great explanations. He was very funny and sometimes his videos featured his parrot and cat. I found the course very enjoyable and really liked the discussion board part. Amazing prof.
Really enjoyed this class! Professor Clary provided lectures online that we could study at our own pace and overall the exams were straight forward and reflected the course material. Would 100% take his class again.
Lectures are easy to follow, discussions are easy, research participation is easy. HOWEVER, the tests were very hard. Lots of random questions, ALL unclear application based mc. He seems like a really nice guy but the tests just seemed unfair and majority of your grade is tests. I don't recommend this prof or course, avoid it if you don't need it.
I did the course with one class per week and enjoyed his pre-recorded lectures. He knows what he's talking about and makes it fun, including his pets in the videos. The exams however were more on the difficult side, they were pretty much concept questions rather than memorization, but I don't have anything bad to say about him.
Funny prof, wouldn't take again due to not liking psych but nothing about his teaching. His exams are super tricky with the wording so reread multiple times.
By far the best course I have ever taken. I enjoyed every second of it.
took PSYC-1200 and intentionally picked the in person one bcz im not good online, however any psych intro w/ him seems to be online Course is a chunck of weekly videos then discussion post, funny in his videos, never met him because dude never showed up, email the TA not him, only thing that got me through the vids was that he's hot.
Prof. Clary is a great professor! His lectures are entertaining, and you can tell he's very passionate about psychology. His online course consists of 4 exams, online discussions, and participating in lab studies. I found the course to be engaging and not too difficult, however it can be hard to stay on top of online work. Great professor overall!
Hes really nice, the discussions, participation portion was quite easy though I would say that some of the tests can be tricky, but if you study youll be fine!
The discussion posts are easy to get full marks on and his lectures are engaging and very clear. You have to watch them though because not all the information is on the slides. He has a bird and cat that he shows in his videos which is super cute. The exams are very application based so make sure you actually understand the concepts and study.
You can tell he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Seems like a kind, down to earth guy. Discussion posts can easily boost your grade up and the content / exams aren't too difficult as long as you study! One of the best professors I've had so far.
he made it clear on the expectations and how to succeed in this class. His lectures were great i never got bored. he often brought in his pets which was very fun to see as examples. you can tell he loves his job which every prof should. i would reccomend!
Engaging intro psych class with funny video lectures. Exams are tough but doable with regular study. unstuck study was a big help for prep.
I had my doubts about this course as it was my first online course, but Dawson has done a really good job of making easy to follow, funny and engaging lecture videos. He's also good about being reachable via email which is impressive given how huge of a class this is. Only way this course could be better is if it were in person!
amazing prof. amazing online lectures. just listen to all his video lectures and you will be fine
He's one of my favourite professors even though I never actually met him in person lol. Some of his lecture videos are hilarious, very kind, and definitely the most chillest prof I've ever had. Would take him again, just do the discussion post and do the test assessment and then you'll be fine! He gives me the favourite uncle vibes I don't know why
I took this course online therefor I had to watch a lot of videos which was time consuming and they were often very boring. 4 tests were given to test our knowledge.
i took an online psych course with him, he's so funny and he brings out his bird during lectures lol
Dawson is great. For PSYC 1200, you'll have to watch A LOT of videos (sometimes 20-30 a week!), but Dawson makes sure that he does his best to make them entertaining and succinct - he even brings out his bird sometimes. I really enjoyed this course. It was a two-semester spanning course and it did not get boring despite it being so long. 10/10.
Very cool class that covers many topics. Dr. Clary makes intro psych very understandable and relates to students well. Course work is not difficult at all, it only takes a bit of time. My only critique is that some exam questions felt too subjective.
Very understandable. At first I struggled due to overwhelmingness to keep up with lectures, but it is doable, just find your schedule. Lectures are straightforward, and exams will be primarily based on lectures, slides alone may not get you to an A+. He is very entertaining and sometimes shows his pets on camera. Research participation is easy.
A great prof! His lecture videos are very clear and he's very willing to provide extra explanations and content to those who ask. The course itself is pretty easy and there's no textbook required!
His lecture videos were concise and usually easy to understand, and the coursework was light and not overly time consuming. However, I found some of the exam questions to be confusing and multiple options were basically the same, it did feel like I was purposely being tricked at times. Wish it was more clear what was being asked/stated.
Online course material easy to understand, he explained everything in the videos very well.
I took this class in fall and his classes are all online. I really liked his teaching style and he is very helpful.
Exams were online- the questions were quite difficult and sometimes were a stretch from what was taught in the lecture. Overall he was funny and clearly passionate about Psych. I don't regret taking this course but thought I would do better than I did. Don't love that pretty much the only option was to take it online.
Dawson is a decent prof. Only teaching online lectures, the material can feel boring and excessive. Weekly assignments are easy enough to complete on time. However, the midterms are terribly worded. Definitely a stretch from the videos he's posted as his lectures. You can understand the material extremely well and still get a poor mark on the exams
The professor seems kind. Online discussions & lecture videos are brilliant, slides are well-structured but explanations aren't always clear. Tests were tricky and not always aligned with recordings. The video audio was triggering, volume fluctuations, rambling and subtitles blocked the slides. I prefer concise explanations & reading material.
Lectures were a good length, but if you aren't consistent with watching them every few days, they pile up quickly. Exams are extremely difficult, and VERY different from content he provided in the lectures. Overall, an interesting class but his exams are a large piece I know many students struggled with.
