He's taught at UW before. I'm a political science major and took it for science requirement. But his syllabus wasn't designed for non-majors. Hard materials and a lot of stuff which only ENV science major can fulfill. Seemed like a decent person. But non-majors, be aware. The Lab class attached to it was very dry and boring.
I'm not major in geo, but the syllabus is designed for geo major. Lab is waste of time, just touch rocks and quiz on lab manual. Lecture is okay. But it's not helping with catalyst questions. Not every one is geo major, I prefer he just get on with the lecture and tell us what's on the test. And please! Get your stuff together with blackboard.
I had to take the science class because of the requirement. He is very hard for non-majors. I just hate liberal art school.
Dax is very passionate geo prof. But I'll not take him unless your major in it. At the beginning there's catalyst questions u have to answer. most answer are given in the lecture. But he changed it into quiz everyday now. So u have to study after every class, bcoz this count as attendance and participatton 10%. He works you hard and grade hard.
Dax is, by far, one of the best professors I've ever had. In fact, one of the best teachers I've had in my life. He's such an interesting person with lots of real-world experiences and is great at teaching. More than willing to spend time with students outside of class, he encourages it. But he makes you work for your grade! You'll learn a lot.
The work load was pretty insane, esp. for a 100 level class. The "connect" textbook is required, that's where some of the hws and quizzes are assigned. There's also hw assigned through blackboard. There's 4 online (connect) quizzes, 4 in class quizzes, and 4 tests. He's really interesting, lenient, and helpful - but this was too much work.
Dax is an amazing prof. but there is a heavy workload. Then again the class is not for non-majors but there are people who take. Either way the science classes here are hard and a heavy workload throughout.
As the professor says, he works for the student. He is available if any student needs outside help. He will also review a subject as many times as necessary to make sure the students understand. His lectures are interesting and comprehensive. Was a good experience.
This class is extremely relevent to our current news, Dax, is super knowledgable and also make the topics palatable for beginners. (Climate change, fracking, greenhouse gases) His powerpoints are awesome and worth looking over before tests! He is very helpful and wants you to tap into your inner scientist. try his class!
Professor Dax is a great teacher and has a genuine care for his students and the material he teaches. He's very available outside of class to help you understand something you may have had difficulty. He cares more about you actually learning than just test grades. Super flexible in terms of tests, quizzes, and homework.
Dax is passionate about the subject and his overall goal isn't your grade. His main goal is he wants his students to understand what is at stake in environmental health. He would be excited at the prospect of adding new recruits to the environmental science program. He expects activism on environmental issues now that we understand the stakes.
Dax is very passionate about the subject he is teaching. He is always engaging the students and making sure they understand the topic. Even though he's test heavy (but gives extra credits), his first and foremost goal is that his students learn and take something with them from the class.
Cares about students a lot and want them to do well, exams were hard, especially the final. But he gave us a lots of chances to make up.
Dax is on the best professors I've ever had. He truly cares about his students and he's a genuine guy. He wants everyone to learn to the best of their ability. The class is very interesting, even if you're not a Geo science major. If you care about the planet and the world you live in, and the well-being of that world, take this class with Dax.
Dax is an amazing, knowledgeable, funny, and overall nice guy to have as a professor. He makes himself available outside of class. This class in general covers a ton of material so you will have to put in a lot of effort and reading time, get ready to work and learn. He gives study guides(test days) and extra credit assignments.
the course is environmental science its what you would expect, a liberal based political discourse with a bit if science mixed in. but its the easiest of all sciences so definitly is a good way to get rid of a requirment
Wonderful environmental science professor! But for geology not so much.
Extremely accessible, organized, and enthusiastic. Always eager for students to come visit him during office hours. Will go out of his way to help his students. Just show up, read the book, take the quizzes, and show him that you care. I thought expectations were fair. Had for Ensci 100 & Geo 101 and would take again. Earned an A+ in both.
Great Teacher. Lots of opportunity to get a good grade. He will definitely make you love or hate geology. Do not take if you have no interest in geology.
Dax is my favorite professor! I was having a tough time choosing a major. I was always concerned about climate change but I wasn't sure if I wanted to make a career around it. Dax, however, gave me the right push and I cannot thank him enough. Any science course will require a great deal of work but if you make an effort to learn, you'll do well.
Overall he is a nice professor but this class is just too much work especially if you are not a science major.
He uses Connect, online textbook. There's lots of reading and quizzes, but nothing too hard. Lab is fun, but lots of writing. Amazing professor.
Dax was super nice! He lets you make up any homework you miss and the work load is definitely manageable I'm a film major and had to take this class to fufill a science requirement and he made enviormental science my fave class this semester! If you do the work you'll definetly get an A
Professor Dax is a really cool guy. He gets to know everyone. He's very enthusiastic about the topic and wants you do to do well while enjoying his class. There's a quiz at the end of every class, but they're easy. Homework is on McGraw Hill. He gives plenty of opportunities to make up work. Definitely take him for any class!
Dax is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, and that in turns sparked my interest and enthusiasm for subject matter. He doesn't just talk the talk, he also walks the walk. Always makes himself available to answer your concerns and help you out. Total home run in my book.
Dax Soule is a truly incredible teacher, a rare gem. Many come into the class just looking to fulfill the science requirement, but Dax keeps everyone's attention with his incredible enthusiasm, and his ability to relate the material to the students and connect. He's always incredibly responsible and personable, and helps anyone who needs it gladly.
This is the most passionate science teacher you'll ever have. I'm an entertainment major but this guy had me thinking wonders about what I could do for the planet. Lots of online homework but honestly it helped retain info. LOTS of extra credit opportunities. Cares so much about his students, you're in good hands with this dude.
Professor Dax will be up there in the best professors you will have in your academic career. He comes to class every day excited to teach. Really cares for each student, goes out of his way to help. You will learn a lot, on one hand that doesn't make it an easy class, but all the material is extremely interesting, so you will enjoy coming to class
From the moment you walk in, you can already feel that he loves what he teaches. Possibly one of the best professors that will never have any problems helping everyone. Easy A tbh.
His goal is that even though you're not an ensci major is that you learn about the environment and learn about the ways to protect it. He offers extra points on tests when you do flashcards and summaries about environmental articles. The class is difficult but doing flashcards helps you a lot. Dax is really cool, you won't regret this class.
There's a lot of work to do for the class, but it's super doable and not that hard. Definitely worth taking, highly recommend
Professor Dax is really cool and amazing! He makes the science class entertaining and fun! And he lets you makeup all online HW missed which the other lady does not do! Highly recommend him.
Professor Soule is a very great professor. Makes very funny and corny jokes! Not too much work just make sure you take notes very diligently as the exit quizzes are heavily based on them. Very personable and easy to ask questions to about the class and not. Lots of terms but the midterm and final is open notes so he's extremely generous with that.
This is the 2nd class I've taken with Dax and I would take every class that he teaches if I could. He's nice and approachable, he forms a relationship with his students that will last far after the semester is over. If you see his name, take his class!
Honestly the most caring professor I have taken at QC. Midterm and Final is online and open book. In fact he encourages students to search for the answers to the midterm and final online. He wants you to learn something from searching the questions. Amazing lectures and he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. TLDR: Take him!! The best!!!
Professor Dax is the reason why I'm an Environmental Science Major. He wants all his students to learn about the environment efficently, and his lectures are great. Study the lecture slides, and the class is a breeze :)
Do yourself a favor, take his class, let him show you whats really going in the environment around the world.
Great Professor, a science class worth taking.
This was such a great class. I really learned about the environment. Professor is great and really takes the time to make you understand what is happening to our environment. The class was so easy with 2 online exams, quizzes after each class, and super straightforward labs. Take this class!
If you want an easy A+ take him! Just attend lectures, study the previous lecture slides to get 100s on the daily quizzes after class. Theyre easy!! Online midterm & final.. easyyy! Gives extra credit even tho u dont need it! Just take his class trust me
Dax is one of the best professors I've ever had. He will go out of his way to make sure that you understand the content. He is very accessible outside of class and answers emails very quickly. The class is difficult and the lectures are long but if you work hard and show an effort to improve he will do everything he can to give you the best grade.
I took this class in the summer bc it was an easy lab. it was great!! we had so much fun and Dax is so chilled and said he wants everyone to take this class so hell just give As. Deff worth it! tests are online. simple Lab H.W. every night. I took the lab with Benjamin Strauss. Love that guy!
Dax is hands down the most caring of all the professors I have had. He always makes time for you, love that the exams are open book and online! I never would have passed this class otherwise. He is so cool and easily allows makeups! Take his class!
This professor does not play when it comes to Geology. You walk in thinking a 100 level course would easy, but thats when youre WRONG. Dax throws at you a lot of material and gets his questions mostly from the textbook. He makes you work for your grade, and allows revisons on exams.
Dax is the best professor you will ever have, allows revision which helps to boost your grade. He cares about students and gives extra points in class + Dinosaurs sticker. Hehe. Clear grading criteria, Accessible outside class. Quick email response which is the best part. If you can take him. Give extra points if you make flash cards
amazing professor. really cares and helpful. makes himself available and really wants you to succeed. must work to know info but opportunity to get credit and good grades.
Makes material easy to grasp
very enthusiastic professor. makes it clear he wants to work for the student to get their best grade possible. the class has ALOT of material. READ the Textbook or you wont pass.
The class is demanding but there are SO many opportunities to boost your grade. Like countless ones. There's no reason you should be doing poorly unless you slack. He's hilarious and a great, clear professor. Very lenient and compassionate as well. But you have to be willing to work hard. You can't get by doing the bare minimum.
you definitely need to take this class with Dr Dax
TAKE HIM FOR ENSCI 99 Highly recommenddddd himm (my lab instructor was really hard though) but he is the best
He is very funny and cares about you getting a good grade, however his test can be difficult if you go in unprepared. He moves quickly but constantly reminds you that he is available after. Before every test you can get 5 points extra credit and after the tests he allows revisions to bump it up 10 points. Just do the work and study and you'll pass.
Dax takes his class very seriously. He's very lenient with us and would give us many chances for us to learn the material. If you study, do flashcards (for extra points) and answer the chapter questions you'll def do great in this class. You would be crazy not to take his class, you won't find a professor that cares like he does.
This prof is a one of a kind. You can tell he's passionate when he walks around the huge lecture room while lecturing with a loud; yet, clear tone. All hw and exams are online, which are easy, but time consuming. I urge everyone to take this class, it encouraged me to change my lifestyle and look at our world carefully.
This professor is awesome. He is soo reasonable and patient. He teaches with enthusiasm and passion. Also he gives a lot of extra credit. I learned alot. I am more aware of how my actions have impact . My lab professor Meghan Martin was really hard, and she is a tough grader. Her wording in quizes were wrong, and she is disorganized in instructions
Professor Soule gives engaging lectures. He combines humour with his academic expertise making his students well informed citizens with a judgement based on scientific method. His class is not hard. It took me 2 hours reading per every lecture+ lab to receive an A-. Perfect Science requirement choice and one of the best at Queens College.
Dear Reader, You buy connect, take the everyday reading, midterm and final online. Show up to his class, laugh, smile, listen to him and have a great time. He also has articles posted on Blackboard for one to understand what is going on in the environment. Not only is this class stress-free, but you WILL learn in this class. You won't regret it.
Every professor should be like him! He is clear and serious about the material but also lenient and understanding about real life. TONS of extra credit + curve on tests (sometimes). But you need to prioritize this class if you plan on taking it. From BB quizzes, to flashcards, and test revisions, it's definitely not a walk in the park.
If you want to be challenged, Dax is the Professor. He will push you and motivate you to be more than you think you can achieve, and he truly does care about what you learn and how you learn it. At times the class can be extremely difficult managing a full class schedule, but if you devote the time and energy, you'll enjkoy being in Dax's class.
I recommend Dax and this class for anyone interested in pursuing geology. you will learn more and better here than anywhere else I put my money on it. it does require alot of work but if you are passionate about geology it shouldnt be a problem. and if you are not passionate yet you will be by the end of this class.
He's a nice person and a good teacher. He was assigned to teach my class even though it wasn't his specialty, but he was pretty good nevertheless. I wish they assigned our class a teacher that had a degree in it, but it's not his fault.
This guy is the best. Weekly homework assignments online, a bit time consuming but easy 100s. Midterm and final are both online. He also makes the class interesting. Really enjoyed the lecture itself too, he makes it funny and interesting with the use of videos and personal stories. Projects his voice well, but not TOO loud.
Exit slips/quizzes at the end of class that only bring down your grade. Better not to submit any. He won't know. Does not allow laptops. Reads from slides. Weekly homeworks take 45 minutes to an hour.
I loved this class! Prof. Soule really cares about his students, which is crazy for a professor who has 100+ students in his lecture. There are daily "exit slips" which are super easy if you do the reading and pay attention in class. Midterm and final are done online, so this is an easy A but also super informational. Def considered a major change.
I honestly can't stress this enough, everyone should take a class with him. It doesn't matter if its Environmental Science or Geology, you would NOT regret taking his class. He is hilarious, he is super nice, extra credit it endless, you would honestly love to appreciate science if you take his class. 100% would take again!!
exit slips every class, lots of slides that that get posted online, and he talks a lot. sometimes randomly calls on people. other than having to show up for the exit slip, you dont need to come to class because the slides are extremely detailed. just come do some work in class, and use his slides to do the exit slip
Amazing Professor. Engaging and interesting.
The best teacher ever! he really gets you involved into the topics, even if you dont like it. He is really high energy. Geo99 has quizzes every week and chapters of homework that is online but long. Other than that it is an amazing great class. He is super nice and accessible out of class by email. If you have the time, take this class!
Amazing prof. Teaches with passion. Caring and approachable. You could be the 10th person in line asking the same exact thing and he will explain again until you understand the material. In this class you must stay awake and focused. he makes it interesting and keeps you awake!! The hw is online, exams are online, but you have a quiz every week.
Great professor. Gives extra credit. Midterm and final online. easy quizzes most classes.
Takeeeee him. I hated science and Im not so good at it but in his class you learn a lot. Quizzes are everyday and the Midterm and the finale is online. He also gave a packet which to me was so hard but I tired my best at it and got a 69(better than a 30) Listen, if you hate science like me and just want a reasonable Professor, than take his class.
Great professor! Had him back when I was a Freshman and he made his lectures as interesting as possible. Just follow the lecture notes and the syllabus, and you'll be fine. There are quizzes but they are very easy. Exams are also easy as long as you study. Made his lectures funny and also answers any questions you have. Recommend this professor!
The professor is always in a good mood. I need to learn a lot of little knowledge in this course because he has a quiz once a week. But it's very easy and complicated. The course is not difficult, but it is cumbersome.
my god! its as if i was learning to become a rocket scientist. skip him if you want to live life!
Relaxing and interactive class, questions asked at the beginning and end of classes. He's available outside of class and gives extra credit assignments. Most things are covered in the lectures. Exams are easy if you study, just pace yourself since it's kind of long.
Professor Soule is a gem! literally he has gems in his office. This man genuinely cares about his students well being and doesn't want you to memorize and spit things back out. He does give quite a bit of online work readings, quizzes, tests, online extra credit. etc. I'm a geology major and I am enjoying his class more than ever. Overall take him.
My god avoid this class at all times. Avoid. two much work is given. it is insane.
The connect assignments are too much. 65 concepts is ridiculous, plus a 50 question quiz. My god. The upcoming final few weeks involves tons of assignments. My god. This professor must be insane. It will be a living nightmare. My god this geology 16 class is too much. I regret taking this class. Avoid this class at all times
I took him earlier this year and forgot to review but it was worth leaving a review. He's a extremely passionate professor, but you can't exactly relax in this class, he will make you work.
The lectures are interesting and engaging and he helps you if you don't understand something. However, there is a lot of homework and in-class assignments but they're doable if you put in effort. He accepts late work and lets you do test revisions. TL;DR Fun lecture, lots of homework/studying.
Lets you do test revisions for a higher grade, gives homework for every class but it's an easy 100 for simply doing it. Everything he does is to help students actually learn, hence why he allows test revisions. Super funny and flexible with due dates.
Lots of opportunities to raise your grade, including test corrections and extra credit assignments. The homework textbook readings are very long. He really cares about your learning and about you. I like it when he reads the chapters to me like a bedtime story while I lay in bed under the covers eating his homemade spaghetti and brussel sprouts.
He is a terrible professor. Great guy, very funny and charismatic but a HORRIBLE professor. He goes through the course too fast, and, while he is an understanding guy, he gives so much work that it gets hard to catch up. Don't take his classes. Unless you absolutely need the credit, save yourself.
The professor is really nice. Even tho he does assign lots of work and he force you to work; it makes up for it. He provide us extra credit and also test revision opportunities which is very kind of him. Dax want us to achieve and get a good grade which is amazing. He also let student go to his office hour and go to peer mentor for extra points.
20 Chapters to read from a textbook site that has a copypaste word limit | 5 Exams that are not multiple choice, includes the types of questions: vocab definitions, short answer questions, and long answer questions w/some requiring you to draw diagrams | Overwhelming workload when taken with other classes | DO NOT TAKE DAX UNLESS U MAJOR IN GEOLOGY
Great professor who cares about his students and wants them to learn and get a good grade, there's a lot of work to do in this class but he is flexible and allows extra credit and exam revisions for each exam. If it's required by your major I highly recommend him, if it isn't get ready for the workload and to read, or just don't take it.
Dax is probably one of the best professors on Queens College's campus. He is very enthusiastic about teaching and his lectures have so much energy. The class itself is a bit work heavy, but if you do the work you will get a good grade. You are not penalized heavily for receiving low test scores/assignments and there are so many makeups/corrections.
Professor Dax was really caring and wanted everyone to do well. His classes were very heavy and could turn long somedays but his test are based on the diagrams drawn in class and the questions at the back of the chapters. Just pace yourself and if you are struggling talk to him as he understand and is willing to help.
Pros:Very charismatic, as someone said, does give opportunity for revisions. Cons: Intense workload, we had to do a mandatory trip outside class hours, and we still got an unrelated HW due that night. Each test, we have to do like 60+ index cards of vocabulary words as only part of the exam. Wouldn't recommend with a full time schedule.
AMAZING professor! He truly cares and wants you to succeed. It's not a hard class at all just very coursework heavy. Complete assignments as soon as they are assigned and you will be fine. Exams are very easy and based on the material covered (no surprises). He is an amazing professor and teaches material well with lots of office hours.
Not necessarily hard, but heavy workload class. A lot of what we did just felt really unnecessary and didn't really help with taking tests, especially for a 101 class. If your just looking to take a science class for the lab requirement, then I would pass on this class. Around $120 for the textbooks too, which were required to do homeworks.
Fun teacher, but the material is heavy. Let you do test corrections.
The greatest Professor in the science department. His class was truly the most engaging class I had this semester, I wish he taught more classes. Such a caring person and gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. You do have to put in the work though but it's manageable and an interesting course. Definitely recommend!
if you are just looking for an elective, PLEASEEE do not take this class! the workload is ridiculous. you will spend $100 to access homework for the semester just to spend up to 3 hours doing one assignment! he uses mcgraw hill. there are on average 60-95 concepts to complete with multiple questions per concept. its unnecessary and redundant!!!
I mean personality wise hes a great professor, but he doesn't even know how to use brightspace and the chapters are way too long, theres too many concepts to learn from just one lecture. Don't even bother emailing him because you will never get a response.
I agree with the past 2 reviews. He can give a lot of workload on the website he made us pay for. Sometimes it takes hours to finish it, which is crazy. Obnoxiously loud.
Gives alot of work on Connect, but gives multiple opportunities to make up work, and gives extra credit in the form of weekly SEES Colloquium. Responds quickly to emails (most of the time).
