Very nice lady.
Her tests are weird, she's not very helpful in teaching subject matter. Her class consists of her reading off powerpoint.
Wonderful teacher, always fun to listen too (although she does get off topic and rants a bit to much). Her thoughts are always very interesting. She does grade her papers a bit hard for the class, but everything she writes is justified (write good papers and you'll be ok) Excellent attend. policy.
Awesome hair. Her lectures can be stilted, but she usually has interesting illustrations. Her tests are really hard - don't think this class is an easy A. If you get a good TA *coughJoshSchendelcough* you'll be fine.
She's a decent teacher, but most learning will be done on own/in discussion. This is not an absolute A class without a slight bit of work (B should be easy enough) so only take it as an elective if you're truly interested in it. Teaches from power point and posts most of the notes online so it can be printed off before lecture or if you missed it.
She's pretty much the worst teacher I've ever had. It's an intro class, but she acts like we all have a PHD in anthropolgy. I'm an A student who will be happy to PASS this class with a D. Her tests are impossible and very unclear. She sucks at teaching and at life. Hope you get a good TA if you take her class...mine is the ONLY reason I will pass.
Not a very good teacher. Her tests are extremely unclear, and VERY tricky. If you get a good TA (Josh Schendel), then that will help. Take Foster-Smith instead if you can.
Her lectures are extremely boring. The key to passing the class is getting a great TA (Darcy "Shane" Miller). He is great. Not only did he help understand the text, his study group was the only reason why I passed. I thought I was goinh to fail, and ended up with a B+. I didn't attend lectures, just his discussions.
BORING lectures, but the tests aren't too hard... Just try to get a good TA... Dale Darby is a good one...
She is an awesome professor and does well with an enormous class. Her lectures are very interesting and highly engaging. Her class is great overall.
To be euphemistic, her lectures are soul-crushingly boring. It is unbelievable how nice death seems when you're sitting there. The good thing is, you really don't have to go to class. I went everyday thinking to myself "Why oh dear God did I come?" She reads off her powerpoint lecture that she puts online. Oh, and get Darcy Miller for TA, he rocks.
90% of the lectures are her reading off powerpoints she posts on the internet. Sometimes shows interesting videos which are hard to get substance from. Tests are pure memorization. Easy to slack off on readings and lecture attendance, which discourages actual learning. LOTS of VERY poorly written, ambiguous questions on tests.
She is a decent teacher. She sometimes talks about interesting things. Her tests are somewhat tricky, but they are passable. She does get easily distracted and says, "umm, so yeah" quite often. If you get a good TA you'll be ok. Love her hair!
I swear she writes every test question just trying to trick you. And if you try to talk to her about the question she basically just ignores you and tells you to talk to your TA. But even if your TA talks to you she'll ignore the TA's too.

so boring. miserbly boring. thought i could handle the boredom, but got irratated at feminist teachings, and her, surprise!, boring lectures.
Very boring class, I pretty much slept the whole time. You have to do a lot of reading, and know pretty much EVERYTHING about the reading and the movies you watch in class for the tests. Test Q's can be really tricky, and about half of each test will be essay (which can be sort of BS-ed thru). I made an A, just make sure you read & watch the movie
She was sort of boring but i thought some of the discussions were useful with the tests. those multiple choice questions are very tricky, but i managed an A
She is completely boring and you can easily skip class if you can get notes from someone else. You MUST attend disscussion because it boosts your grade. You watch films and expect questions about them on the tests. The tests are about 15 multiple choice and is the hardest part. There are also two essays which are easy to BS.
When I went to class, I slept. Go only on movie days.Everything eles you can get from the book. GO TO DISCUSSION. and pray you have a good TA, bc theyre the ones that grade your test, and if theyre bad, they wont give you any points on the essays. Some of the books are on sparknotes.
One of my favorite professors at UT. She is not incredibly engaging in class, but she is easy to talk to in office hours and she really cares about teaching, not just publishing.
Please PLEASE listen... GO to class on movie days. she loves putting questions about them on the tests. the essays SUCK and there are always 2 on every test. Read the books and watch the movies and you should be okay. Try to get the notes from someone who went to class if you choose not to go. You'll need them.
This was a horrible class. Lectures were mind numbingly boring. If you are not intersted in the subject do not take it. The tests are pretty hard. Go to discussion. WATCH VIDEOS. Pray for a good TA. No need to come except on video days.
Class was interesting enough for an intro course, although I'm avoiding taking her again. Tests aren't too bad, just go over study guides and be familiar with many of the characteristics of specific cultures and stuff she goes over in class. My TA (Compton) was useful too. Also, brush up on your essay skillz, they're on every test.
BLAAAAAAAHHHHHH! But easy.
This class will make you want to stab your eyes out in agony if you aren't interested in anthropology. EXCESSIVELY boring. Make sure you go to discussion. Exams have way too many essays on them for an intro-level class and one thats only 50 minutes. Sorry if you're a communications student and have to take this class.
Lectures are really boring...go to discussion and make sure you do the review sheets and your grade should be fine...if you decide to skip class make sure you see the in class movies at the media center
One of the most boring events of my life. Pendry's got good intentions but she's entirely too boring, her power points are unstructured and hardly make sense, and you cannot possible write them down for she switches them at 900 mph. I hate anthropology with a burning passion and she only fueled the fire.
The lectures are sooo boring! but my discussion was fun, it's easy, the notes are all on blackboard, but you need to watch all the movies! so look in the syllabus for those and go to those classes, other than that, really easy!
just go to class and do exactly what she tells you. yeah its annoying and you have to read the books and study, but if you put effort into it then its totally easy
Ugh. This class is the class I skipped the most. I try my best to care..but the way she talks about things...just makes me want to sleep. The slides, and the videos, and the people..just everything. Discussion is vital to pass the test.If nothing else, ATTEND DISCUSSION! If you do end up taking this class be prepared to be lulled into a coma.
Very boring class, I just dont follow the lecture because they are always random topics and its not applied. Just go to discussion sessions and movies but you also need to read outside or else youll be lost. like me. dont rely on notes being online bc they dont make sense
Avoid this teacher! For a subject that should be relatively interesting, she succeeded in making it the most boring college class i have taken. The way she words her multiple choice questions on tests set you up for failure. Everyone I talk to in this class says they have a C or worse and it is a 100 level class! Find another teacher no matter what
Notes don't have any structure, and the quizzes are so random. Also, the multiple choice on the tests is killer. "All of the above, none of the above, both A and B," and sometimes, it's whatever she feels like is the better answer, not what actually could be. Essays are actually the easy part! I've never made below a B, and this is my first =(
Easy if you go to lecture, discussions, pay good attention to films, and read the texts! I only read chapter summaries in Kottak and got an A. Read the other books though! And go to DISCUSSION!!!
she is a good teacher, easy to listen to. her test are absolutely ridiculous. she words them the hardest way possible so that a simple multiple choice question becomes impossible.
she is very enthusiastic about the class and does a good job teaching it, but her tests are near impossible. she will take a simple question and word it so that u have no idea wat is going on. on every test i got a 100 on the essay part then like a 60 on the multiple choice part. extremely boring class
she is very enthusiastic about the class and does a good job teaching it, but her tests are near impossible. she will take a simple question and word it so that u have no idea wat is going on. on every test i got a 100 on the essay part then like a 60 on the multiple choice part. extremely boring class
If you can write you will make an A or B+ in her upper level anthropology classes. She hasn?t been a prof her whole life so her lectures are not that clear. You don?t have to go to class but your participation is 5% to 10% of your grade. She shows lots of movies and gives some odd essays. Such as, write a convo between Ruth Benedict and Franz Boas
She does have awesome hair. Her 410 class was really interesting. It was challenging and engaging and she did a great job teaching it. I wish the class had been longer. BUT lots of writing. If you don't like to write, move along.
So I was warned about the multiple choice being difficult, and I should have listened. The essay part to the tests were pretty easy, but multiple choice were worded so weird. Reading in that class is really important, and whenever she shows a video in class make sure to pay attention to DETAILS! Her class is a little boring, but she's enthusiastic.
Dr. Pendry is a nice woman, and I'm sure she knows her stuff, but she's not a very good teacher. Her powerpoints don't match up with what she's saying and she doesn't make the main points of her lectures very clear. MC questions on tests are confusing. To do well, you HAVE to watch the movies and read the books.
The essay parts of her test are super easy, but the multiple choice is really obscure information and worded so weirdly its hard to get a good grade. The class itself is very interesting though, the videos are good, end even the books were good.
Her lectures are almost pointless other than frantically trying to get the notes off the powerpoint that really don't make sense anyway. She doesn't grade anything. Almost a pointless teacher. The class would be better if the Assistants just taught a lot of different classes instead of one huge class. Unfortunately shes the only choice for Anthro
I love Dr. Pendry! She makes Anthropology interesting, and she is very funny at times. You don't have to attend lectures, but discussion sections count attendance. The multiple choice is not obscure as many people have said; there are some questions that require in-depth thinking, but it's nothing different than any other collegiate test.
Dear lord. I don't know why she even holds a lecture course. Tests are 100% on the readings. Material on tests in random and obscure examples from the readings. It does not matter if you understand the key concepts or not. They are hardly touched on in the tests. Remember specific details from the readings and you might be ok...
This class is very interesting if you are interested in human rights. However, we had to read a lot, the textbook and multiple enthnographies.
Go to class! If you goof off you still absorb the most important part of lectures because Pendry is a great lecturer. Her test however are difficult because mult.choice count for 70% of grade and are hardest part. Be prepared for random details from movies, ethnographies, and textbook to be tested. KNOW specifics, pray of good TA, go to disscusion!
I absolutely loathed this class. Her lectures are boring, and generally have nothing to do with the test. Avoid this teacher if possible. The multiple choice questions are worse than the essay questions.
Pendry can be boring in lower entry Anthro's like 130, which I had her for, but I had her for 2 classes in upper level courses and she really is a great teacher and human being.
Her lectures are interesting, but somewhat boring. If you don't have a love for the course, you probably won't enjoy the class as much. I, personally, really did enjoy the class, but i had to work my butt off to achieve a good grade. READ the books and watch the videos, otherwise you won't pass.
She is quite boring some days in lecture and her tests are fairly hard if you don't read. SO READ! Her multiple choice will kill you too. TAKE KARMEN STEPHENSON as your TA. She's the BEST!
Loved this class! Discussion sections were mandatory but really helped on the exam. If you go to lecture and read the book an A is definitely attainable!
Really interesting class. Attend class and do the readings and you'll be set. Discussions are really helpful too. Karmen Stephenson is awesome! Try to get her as your TA if you can. Overall really happy how this class turned out.
Dr. Pendry led some interesting lectures and asked good questions. Her multichoice tests were incredibly difficult, but essay portion was a lot easier. Don't expect straight A's on the tests. There is a lot of extra credit at the end of semester so it helps your grade. I would recommend her to anyone who needs to take ANTH 130.
Completely unhelpful. Completely arbitrary. Rambles, not lectures. She is literally the reason why I decided not to pursue an anthropology major (it has been my major for two years), just because I would have to suffer through more of her classes. Her research is the research that I want to do, but I still despise her classes. Awful. Awful.
Dr. Pendry is an interesting lady. Her class is more of an insight to different cultures rather than a lecture of material this can be fun if you're into that, but useless if all you need is a grade. Discussion is more helpful than lecture by far so be sure to attend that and READ if you do nothing else. Books for the class are cheap on Chegg.
I absolutely hated this class. Going to lecture is pointless since she posts everything from class online and only the films and readings are on the exams. The exams are the kind where when you finish you think you did good, you knew all the answers then you get it back and you failed. MC are, "These answers are right but this is MORE right."
Lecture for this class was pointless. The films and the readings are the only things on exams and she posts those online. Her exams have about 20 MC about 3 essays and the MC are the kind where two answers are right but one is MORE right. The only thing that saved me from making a lower grade in this class was the 3pg paper you have to write.
It was an easy, general requirement class. I stopped going to lecture completely about two weeks in because the only thing we did was watch videos. Just do the reading, watch the videos online, and make sure you do the study guide she gives you and you'll do absolutely fine.
This was supposed to be about American Cultures. I was expecting cultural studies. Instead we had to read five books that were barely about culture and mostly about liberal beliefs. You get to choose one book, so six books/ papers. Don't take this class if you don't have liberal views or if you're looking for something interesting. She's nice-ish.
Dr. Pendry is a very nice lady, but unless you absolutely, positively have to take this class, don't!
This class required tons of reading, so if you're not into that, find another class for a GenEd. Other than that, the material is easy to understand, the lectures are fascinating, and the topics are meaningful. Only wrote 1 essay, had 3 other exams, and a few quizzes. Discussion attendance is mandatory for a good grade, but the TAs are helpful.
If you don't like reading or it's hard for you to find time for it, don't take this class. I originally thought this would be a fun and fairly easy class to take, learning about different cultures. This ended up being my worst class to this day. I went to all lectures and discussions but struggled. She rambles and her tests are tricky.
After reading the reviews I was unsure about taking her class, but I am so happy that I did. I learned so much and she covered everything that is on the test in the lectures. Also, in comparison to other teachers, I have heard that she is the better one to have. I would highly recommend taking taking Cultural Anthropology with her.
She requires a ton of reading and a ton of videos. She has really interesting lectures, but they seem really long. She is very repetitive in her lectures which can get tiring really fast...
She had wild crazy hair and shows up late: forst impression. She has shown no actual teaching abilities. She basically takes the authors from the main book. Find the books that they wrote and hand them out in class . No guidance, support, explainations. Be prepared for atleast a full grade lower that you normally do (and should have gotten)
Course description was research methods. We have learned exactly zero research methods, instead we have read oanthropologists out of a book. She finds the books they wrote and passes them in class. The slideshows are nhttp:wwwothing more than pictures of the title page. She reads the titles of the chapters. Pictures are from the books. No value
Do not take
Lectures are dry; just a summary of the 150 pgs you already read. Her grading on papers is very, VERY inconsistent as are the requirements. She will also quit returning your work and will not post grades after the first few weeks. If you approach her with questions, the answer will most likely be condescending
She's a nice person and OK teacher if you're interested in the material. For me, most of the material was common sense, but that's not everyone. She posts her lectures online, but it only really helps if you go to lecture. I recommend going to lecture because it helps you review and she may use specific examples (may be on test). READ THE MATERIAL!
Didn't really enjoy the class, the material was boring and long. Dr. Pendry is alright I guess, but I won't be taking her again. She gives way too many things to put in your essay, and counts off if you don't do EXACTLY what she asked for, even if what she asked for isn't clear. She's very awkward and doesn't respect personal space. Otherwise ok.
Dr. Pendry is kind of an odd duck. This course is required for my major in order to understand cultures and how societies function. However, all of the information in this course is painfully outdated. I highly doubt that discussing tribal groups that we've never heard of will be helpful in the PR field. Also, tests are awful and misleading.
Great class to take if you need anthropology. I recommend Pendry. Her lectures can be long and repetitive, but as long as you read a little, you should pass her exams.
Lectures lagged on. Topics are extremely boring. Pendry is nice but boring.
Professor Pendry really wasn't my style. Lectures were long and made longer by her telling stories that didn't help us learn. We watched a good number of films. Expectations for tests and the essay were quite vague. My TA for this course was excellent and helped me and my grade a lot. There are much easier options if you're wanting a GE credit.
She seems a little odd at first but I really liked her. I took the cultural anthropology class and it offered a lot of insight to cultures around the world in a broad perspective. The lectures can be long at times. She teaches general terms but make sure you know any specific examples she gives because you will be tested on them.
She looks like Professor Trelawney off Harry Potter. She never takes role in lecture so you don't actually have to go which is good because she is BORING and super annoying. You do have to read like 3 books and watch hour long videos to pass.
If you are considering this for a GE, don't do it. Lectures tend to be very dry, but there is no attendance. TAs can be super helpful and mine is honestly why I passed. Exams are very nitpicky and you absolutely HAVE to read the assigned readings and watch the videos or you will fail, as they are what the exams consist of. One easy paper.
The class itself isnt too bad, it depends on your TA. The lectures are somewhat helpful, but not mandatory. Do all the readings and you can pass the class.
The lectures are honestly super boring and you don't have to attend all of them to pass the class with a decent grade. As long as you study, read the material, and watch the videos you will be fine. There is a discussion section with this class and the discussion teachers are there to help and do greatly.
Lectures are boring and dry. You either have a good TA or a bad TA. Attendance is taken in discussion, and there are several quizzes. There are weekly discussion posts online. Tests are hard and confusing if you don't know the films and readings perfectly. There is one essay, but it's not bad. Avoid taking her, but it won't kill you.
De's lectures can be interesting, but it's really hit or miss. She loves to talk about her self and her personal adventures on the 2 anthropological studies she's done. Her TA's are hit or miss, I had Komakech and he was awful. I would probably try to take this class with someone else.
This is not a good class. It was extremely boring and the information is all over the place making it hard to study for the exams.
Dr. Pendry is a special kind of professor. Out of all my semesters at this university, she is the only one that has truly set students up to fail. On our final, 18/20 questions had the chance to be "all of the above." For a gen ed course the tests were ridiculous and the lectures were disrespectful as she would just pop in an hour long movie. NOPE
All she does is lecture about her life and other things that will definitely not be on the tests. It depends on the TA you get on whether your tests will be graded fairly. You read A LOT and the lectures are long and boring. Only plus are the days she only shows films. Do not take her.
Lectures are so boring and my TA was a very harsh grader. I had Nastaran Abdoli. Pendry is uninteresting and too expectant, especially for a low level class. Race was brought up a lot in this course, unnecessarily. This class is doable, but not enjoyable.
Just don't do it, unless you want to listen to her talk about herself for an hour and then expect you to know test material based on readings and looking over powerpoints on your own.
This class is not an A without effort, so if its not directly needed for your major- you probably shouldn't take it. There are many readings and movies outside of class and you depend heavily on a section teacher to help you pick out whats important. A lot of miscellaneous information sums up class. Tests and paper are ok, go to section every week.
There is a textbook for the class but if you go to class you won't need to read. ( To get an A, I suggest reading). Your TA's will be helpful! Take advantage of the little resources you have. It's not a hard class but it's not the most enjoyable either. Pendry is a lot of help during office hours so take advantage of that.
She fails to make her lectures actually relevant. She seemingly has not updated the class since the 90s. The videos and books are all from when my parents were in college themselves. I would not recommend taking this class unless you are an anthropology major. The one thing I learned about cultural anthropology is that it is very outdated.
The lecture isn't mandatory but there are quizzes in discussions. This class is relatively easy as long as you study for the exams. You will have to read the articles and watch the movies she posts but they aren't very demanding. Overall a very easy class
Pendry was not a very interesting lecturer. I went only to my discussion sessions with Tyler Howe (TA) and read the book. Never showed up to class except for exams and passed no problem. Her lectures are boring and McClung museum is super hot in the fall
Pendry is one of the most boring lecturers I've had. She goes on in class about her own studies, and then tests you on them. Most lectures she just shows crappy quality videos that are older than the students in the class. For a 100 level GenEd, there is way too much information to read and know for tests. Highly recommend avoiding her if you can.
Boy if you don't like reading run far away from Pendry. All of the exams are based 90% around the material you are to read and the questions are so abstract that you are better praying for a C.
Dr. Pendry is really interesting and she's very personable if you actually make the effort to talk to her. You HAVE to do the readings or you won't pass, but the readings are cool. The further you get in, the more the exams are based on documentaries. Just do the readings and watch the films and you will do great.
very heavy and not fun class. irrelevant to moder day ANTH.
Pendry is a fine prof, but her exams are a bit ridiculous for a 50 minute Gen Ed class, in my opinion. Her tests consists of about 18 multiple choice questions and 4 essay questions. There's a TON of reading in this class, and you really have to read in order to pass the exams. TAs are hit and miss--I don't really feel that mine helped me too much.
The class is based off a few books and many many many videos. Dr. Pendry is a very dry professor. The class isn't hard but her class is very boring and dull so I didn't go to a lot of lectures and still got a good grade. Make sure you read the books OR attend lecture, don't skip both.
be prepared to read.. A LOT. this class is supposed to be sort of a "gen ed" class, but its harder than most of the classes I'm taking for my major. the professor is rude and very standoffish. you'll also watch a bunch of videos from the early 90s with awful quality and boring content.
Insane amount of reading. Lectures are completely useless and study guides are like a 3 page essay for a test that's 18 multiple choice questions and 4-5 short answers. WAY too much information. I never skip class or discussion, do all the readings, and go to her office hours and still do poor on the tests. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
Dr. Pendry is a good prof, but you have to be open minded to her opinions. Show up to lecture to hear her view on the material, not just how it is explained in the book. Exams are relatively difficult for an intro level class, but not impossible. The TA you get will make a huge difference in your grade.
Dr Pendry is super passionate. She likes to use the first few weeks of class to talk about her research, which is interesting. Stay on top of readings and it'll be fine. Your TA will either help you a lot or make you hate the class.
Professor Pendry's class is not the easiest. You will be assigned multiple anthropologies to read and films to watch. Despite this, I love having her. She's passionate about her career and interesting in a hippy grandmother kind of way. I HIGHLY suggest that, if given the opportunity, you choose Idil Issack as your TA. You'll thank me.
I had Dr. Pendry for 320 and 130 and loved both classes. I found both very engaging, particularly 320. For 130, the last couple exams are mostly on the documentaries you watch in class. 320 is all essays but her prompts are basically essay outlines. Just make bullet points from the questions and go from there. You HAVE to do the readings for both.
this class is hard and Pendry isnt very understanding of struggling students. The tests are nearly impossible to get a good grade on and her lectures are all over the place. My advise is to not go to class but watch all the movies and do the readings. Its hard but a B is possible. An A is very impossible.
De. Pendry is a nice woman but the amount of reading and videos this class requires is absurd. She wants you to memorize every small detail from the films/books for the exams rather than the actual relevant information. Lecture is pointless and attendance isnt taken, just watch all films, read books, & go to discussion and ur good
Pendry's class was really fun and interesting. Make sure you check out the reading/video materials or you will be lost on exams and pop quizzes in discussion. If you enjoy learning about other cultures and dissecting reading material, this class will be a breeze.
I have had Pendry for an upper level anthropology and an intro anthropology and I definitely liked her more in a smaller, upper level class. She assigns a lot of work, but it is all useful and interesting in some way. She genuinely cares about what she teaches.
Dr. Pendry is a great professor and very passionate about her work. She isn't super clear about her grading criteria, but she responds quickly to emails. It's definitely a class that I look forward to. Lots of reading, it's November and we've already read three books, but they aren't textbooks so they are a slightly easier read.
This class was by far the worst 100 level anthropology course I have taken. While Dr. Pendry is friendly and passionate, the class simply demands too much of a student for being an introductory level course. Taking into consideration readings, assigned documentaries, studying, and assignments, this course exceeds a reasonable amount of work.
She is a great professor and passionate about what she does but this class requires an abused amount of work for a 100 level class. If this class is not required for your major DO NOT TAKE IT. It's so time-consuming and the exams are very difficult. Let this be your warning.
Horrible amount of reading and movies. Almost every bit of the exam is taken from these books and films, which are the most miserable things you will ever have to read/watch. Dr. Pendry is passionate about her work, but this class is excessive for a gen ed.
Class is lecture based with discussions with your TA. Vast content with oddly specific quizzes and exams. Quiz about every two weeks thats only 5 questions. Multiple choice, but super specific questions over that last two-three weeks, which included multiple videos, readings, and lectures. Would not take again.
Test averages were in the 60's and took forever to be graded. The material is very dry and her lectures did not help. This is by far the most time consuming gen ed I've ever taken and is ridiculously difficult for a 100 level class. There were many times we were expected to read an entire book and watch several films in one day.
Professor Pendry is very enthusiastic about anthropology which honestly made me rate her higher than I would have. However, lecture slides have no words on them so it's hard to take notes unless you listen carefully. She gives a ton of outside of class readings and films and the tests are heavily linked to the films and readings.
Love Dr. Pendry, dislike the class. The material is interesting but the workload and hard tests/quizzes aren't really worth it. I dont understand why this is considered a gen ed, Dr. Pendry and her TAs treat the class as if everyone is majoring in Anthropology... Im a graphic design major lol. If youre not fascinated by anthropology, drop it.
Dr. Pendry is clearly very knowledgeable and excited about her subject! In her honors class, you got to see it more than in the general class. The videos are often very interesting, but the lecture can get a little boring. Her reading materials, while long, are easy to read and understand!
Dr. Pendry's class was very difficult for a gen ed requirement. If you are looking for an easy gen ed, do not take this one. That being said, Dr. Pendry is a good professor and is very knowledgeable. There are a lot of readings and films in the class, but as long as you do them, the class is not very hard with a little effort.
This class was required by my major, and I think that most of the class also took it because it was required for their major. That said, our test averages of 100+ students was C or below, and the tests are ridiculously hard. It is all based on films and readings (about 4-5 films per chapter, and 40+ pages of articles). Tests are very specific ?'s
Didnt know what to expect going into it. Like most people, it was required for my major. By the end of the semester, attendance dropped by at least 50%. Tests are on films (6: 1.5hr each x 4 units) and readings, even ones labeled as optional. Think she enjoys making tests impossible. Absolutely do not take. I cant stress it enough to everyone.
There was a lot of content for the course and you basically taught it to yourself. The lectures did come in handy, but the discussion sections were where I learned the most information. The lectures were just recaps of the notes while the discussions were in-depth and more useful on the tests. Lots of movies to watch on your own.
Very extreme course load for a 100-level class.
If you care about your mental health do not take this class or professor unless you are required to for your major.
Slow to grade assignments. Difficult to take notes in lectures, will have to teach yourself the material.
Good Cultural Anthropologist, not so good teacher. My TA made a girl cry. Not a fun class. A long, boring class.
one of my family friends graduated from UT with a degree in anthro, and she said that every time she had to take a class with pendry she would drop and get another professor. shes okay at lecturing, but is not a good teacher and is so harsh on grading. if i could go back in time an undo one mistake from my whole life, it would be taking this class.
Great person/ cultural anthropologist, but terrible teacher.
Do not take this class unless it is required for your major. There was way too much content/reading for each exam. Material given on study guide did not reflect what was on the exam. I think most could agree that there was never enough time to complete the exams with how much was asked to complete and with extreme detail.
The main takeaway about Dr. Pendry: She teaches like her class is the most important thing in your life.
gives boring lectures that dont actually apply to what is on the exams. all that is necessary is reading and attending discussions.
I was in her 130 class as well and for a 100 level course, these classes had the exact amount of work. It is clear that if you are taking many classes, she expects you to put this one at the top of priorities with tons of readings and long films to watch.
Do not take this class unless you have to because it's awful. None of the lecture material corresponds with the exams. Quizzes are all based on the 1000+ pages of boring readings and videos. As a person, I'm sure she's fine. But her class is terrible content-wise. It's too much work for a 100 level class and this is coming from an honors student.
I don't know why all of the bad reviews, I LOVE Dr. Pendry. I took 130 last year and really enjoyed that class. The exams were not bad at all, especially if you study. There was always an exam review in my discussion section. I found all of the content very interesting. I am now taking ANTH 320 with Dr. Pendry and enjoy this class even more.
I love cultural anthropology, but taking Dr. Pendry's class has taken away my interest of ever taking another anthropology class with UT. She will make you treat this class as if its a top priority. Not to mention the occasional racism and transphobia in the text book, which you HAVE to read if you want to pass the class.
Way too much reading. When it comes to exam time, there's no way I can remember what I read 3 weeks ago because I've read 58248945 pages. It's fine if this is your only class, which she assumes it is, but taking this with 4 other classes is not the move.
Was expecting to love this class but the layout made it super hard. Attendance not mandantory in lecture, but you must show up to discussions, read the super long books, and watch the films, or you will not pass the exams. Our first exam, the highest anyone got was an 88 and it was basically a book report with the smallest details from the novel.
Took Pendry for Dynamics of Health and Illness. Would not recommend ever. She grades insanely hard on some papers, but easy on others with no reasoning behind why. She does not use a rubric and gives a rough outline for papers. The "critiques" on the papers do not make any sense, and for an anth professor she grades like an english professor.
I don't think that tests in a class should be 90% content you had to learn outside of class when you're in lecture every week. She assigns absolutely too much outside reading and watching for a 100 level class. I was excited for the idea of this class, but did not find much, if any enjoyment from it. If you keep up with the work, you should be ok.
The lectures are not helpful and SO much reading and watching movies. There is just so much content and Dr. De A Pendry does not help at all because the lectures are SOOO surface level. My TA, Ray Griffen, was very sweet and helpful to try and help you succeed.
I didn't have Dr. Pendry in ANTH130, so I am only speaking for the two upper-division courses I took with her. I credit her with teaching me how to be a better writer and learning SO much about different cultures and anthropology. There is reading, watching films, and writing papers (with guides), but no tests or quizzes. 100% recommend.
Pendry is a terrible lecturer. She's boring and doesn't always cover unit-specific information. However, YOU NEED TO GO TO EVERY LECTURE! My only saving grace was my awesome TA (shoutout to Ray).
Dr. Pendry was not bad at all. As long as you do the readings (she LITERALLY tells you what to study and read for the tests) you will know the exam front and back. Extra credit is offered too. People rating her badly probably just didn't keep up with the work. Lecture slides are posted also. Shoutout to Ray, amazing TA get them if you can!!
Dr. Pendry is great at her professional work, but not great at teaching what she knows. Her exams are extremely material-heavy, and they are almost entirely from the films and articles. Her honors class adds too much extra work that counts for too little, so it isn't worth it as an honors class. TLDR: Okay professor, terrible class.
Dr. Pendry's 130 class is treated like a 400+ level class. The exams are extremely detailed oriented, as are the pop quizzes. If you don't stay on top of the mountain size pile of readings and movies you have to do outside of class and attend every single lecture, you will not do well. Lecture notes are provided but are useless.
Pendry is difficult and her lectures don't give any help for exams. You have to read tons and watch long documentaries to be able to do good in the class. The TA I had tried her best to help us prepare but even then, you still struggle during the exam itself.
If you care about your mental health or going over important topics get another professor. This is treated like a high level class, with a heavy lean on what she finds interesting. There is so much information through movies and readings that important topics get utterly lost. Attendance matters, but not during lectures, only at TA discussions.
Dr. Pendry spends almost every lecture talking about herself (what projects SHES worked on, what 'amazing work' SHES done), and comes off as very braggy and stuck-up. She also uses a lot of derogatory or outdated terms to refer to races, abilities, and genders. This class was an utter bore to suffer through, but I needed it for my major. DONT TAKE!
Do not take this class unless necessary! Only grades are exams, pop quizzes, and one essay. Exams are mostly essay questions that are basically book/documentary tests that are too specific for the amount for readings assigned. Discussion sections are not helpful at all either. Dr Pendry loves what she teaches but this course is the worst.
Pendry's class is intense - lots of readings and lectures you really can't miss. But the TAs are great and tools like Unstuck study can help with study prep. If you're diligent, you'll do well, though the workload is heavy.
She is definitely passionate but the lectures are still a bit of a bore. Exams are mostly very niche multiple choice/essay questions from readings or documentaries. You don't do much in the discussion sections but the TA's are somewhat helpful. Overall, meh. Wouldn't take it if you don't have to.
I do not recommend Dr.Pendry. The exams have nothing to do with the lectures and rely fully on outside readings, films, and textbooks. Her lectures were rarely helpful, and she got very off-topic. She assigns random pop quizzes throughout the semester during discussion times. Also, there are very few assignments other than exams.
This class was a waste of time. Readings were extremely long and exams relied heavy information from them and films. Unless you like to read and watch films with poor quality, don't take this class.
You do not have to come to lectures (no attendance), but it is somewhat helpful if you do. A lot of the exam comes from movies or readings, but if you go to lecture you can usually figure it out without ever doing the readings. The discussion sections are really enjoyable except for the occasional pop quiz. Overall easy vol core.
Dr. Pendry is definitely qualified! She has a lot of achievements under her name, but her teaching style does not match my learning style. I took ANTH320, which was entirely discussion-based. The only grades were essays (5), journals, and a presentation. Each essay was worse despite using her critiques to help. It was overwhelming.
I switched into ANTH130 to fulfill a GenEd credit thinking it would not be super difficult nor overly time consuming given the level it is listed as. Unfortunately, this class was my hardest. Tons of obscure & difficult reading, tons of old movies (w/o subtitles on my end), & the exams/paper basically make up your entire grade. I am glad its over.
Lots of reading and videos to watch. Tests are mainly on the readings & videos, and determine your grade. Attendance is only mandatory for the discussion section, but attending the lecture is helpful sometimes. Wouldn't take this class unless you have to.
Dr. Pendry is highly qualified, and you can tell she is passionate about anthropology. This class definitely "weeds people out" of the anthropology department- hence the lower rating on RMP. It is VERY reading heavy, including an ethnography, textbook chapters, and random readings given throughout the semester. Do the readings, and you'll be fine.
Worst professor I've ever had. The tests aren't based on lectures at all and in lecture she only talks about herself. Tests are instead based on SEVERAL readings and movies that are to be watched and read outside of class. This class is required for my major and I would change my major before I would take her class again.
Before you read anymore of this, if this class isn't required for your major don't willingly put yourself through it. Hardly any assignments to levy out your grade, so unless you do amazing on the exams you aren't going to do good in the class. Read the lecture notes, don't go. Everything on the exam is based on long texts and movies. Beware!!!
Her exam is based on the readings and videos you watch outside of lectures. The lectures are pointless, I don't recommend taking this professor.
A lot of Dr Pendry's class is just reading articles and watching documentaries outside of class that matter more than attending the actual lectures. It's not a bad or particularly difficult class if you attend lectures and study, but it is boring. A lot of the tests she gives rely heavily on out-of-class content and not very much on lecture notes.
If this class is not required, do not take it. Professor is obviously passionate and informed about what she does but it does not translate whatsoever in her lectures. The grades are based on your discussion posts and exams, nothing else. The exams are based on the million things you're assigned to do outside of class, so good luck. Don't do it.
