Great prof! Knows his stuff, super willing to help, really cares for how well his students do in the course, and great marker! If you put the work in, there's no reason why you shouldn't do great!
Great prof! Super willing to help, knows his stuff, really cares for how well his students do in the course and a great marker! If you put in the work required, there is no reason why you shouldn't do great in his course!
He is a good prof overall yet he is unclear at times in what he's looking for in assignments. He is also very hard to reach for help.
Best prof I ever had. So helpful and wants you to do well. He is a firm believer that if you show the prof you want to do well, you will. I recommend if you ever have him and get a poor or even good mark go talk to him. He is a great guy and will help you with anything you need help with.
Excellent prof., always there to help and very easy to reach! Makes couses easy and not alot of work.
Very cool guy, will help you anyway he can. Fair marker. I totally recommend him.
He was excellent, enthusiastic and clear. Recommend him for any future courses.
Awesome prof! The best I've ever had, would recommend 100%.
Great prof, but for some reason refused to answer my questions through email.
Hands down the best prof I've ever had! Wants you to do well. Assignments are really easy. Easy marker. Go to his office and see him, he's a great guy and wonderful to talk to!!! Would recommend. Wish he could be my prof for every Geography course :)
Fantastic human being & an amazing human geography prof!
Great prof, very willing to help on all assignments and very approachable. 30% of the semester was based on PassFail assignments. Basically if you do the work required, you'll do really well in this course.
Amazing Professor, really cares about the students. The class has a huge pass fail components and all of which are easy assignments. Overall I highly recommend, Dean know's his stuff. This course provided you do at least minimal work should be a breeze. Take-home essay midterm and similar final where you select your own questions.
He makes class interesting and takes the time to research today topics related to the course contact, which makes great interest. He is great, gladly take another class by him.
Interesting lectures, great professor and fair grader. Strongly recommended.
What an excellent elective and prof!! You can literally write and explore any topic you are interested in and he'll support and guide you. Gives great feedback and will work with you around deadlines! Strongly Recommend.
Great prof, he was very clear for what he wanted, he gave you the ability to make up marks if you didn't dwell on the midterm. And he was very knowledgeable about the topics. I would highly recomend him to anyone taking geography.
Amazing professor! He provided lots of great examples to keep course content interesting and relatable. Really liked how most of the assignments were just marks for completion, really helped overall average but didn't make me lose interest in the course. best part was that he gave us creativer control for our final assignments!
Wonderful Professor! Made learning about Geography very interesting. The assignments were great, some were marked just for having them done, but they still helped you understand the topics. He was very helpful and didn't make you feel like a fool if you asked for help. I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in Geography.
I love her. Hes a wonderful person. Im willing to be Mrs. Bavington.
Favourite prof by far. All assignments were pass/fail and the midterm & final are all take home essays which you get to chose your own question for. Would 100% take this class again.
I love him. Wonderful human.
Dean is one of those profs that takes the time to show he cares about what he is teaching and his students. You get out what you put in with his courses, show interest, do your work and reap a respectable grade.
Dean Bavington is one of the best profs I have had so far. His lectures are interesting and the course work is minimal and very straightforward. You should have no problem passing this course as long as you put an effort in. Dean is always willing to communicate outside class. Grading scheme is very lenient; you just have to do the work.
Best prof at MUN! Take his course even if you aren't a geo minor/major, you wont regret it!
He is the sheeeitttttt!!!!!!would blindly recommend him for this course or any other course he takes. 4 yrs of my life and didnt see a prof who is so flexible with students!! No quizzes, no mid, no finals... what else do ya need!!!
Worst prof I have had mun. Took over a MONTH to give back an assignment. Still does not have our last assignment back to us that was worth 10%, it is now the beginning of final exams! Reads directly off the slides and makes no effort to make things interesting.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. Thought I liked Geography but Dean managed to change my mind. Course was boring and he often went off topic. The majority of the grades were rewarded in the form of assignments on material he never taught us. Didn't give enough time to complete the assignments, and took a MONTH to grade and pass back ONE.
Dean is a very nice guy but his lectures were horrible. He got off topic often and he would assign assignments on material he had not lectured yet. The only time I really enjoyed Geo this semester was when he got Nick Lynch to come lecture for him. Also, don't expect to get assignments back in a timely manner.
Best prof at MUN!!
Dean genuinely cares about his students and will go out of his way to help you succeed! Like any other course, you'll get a mark that reflects the work you put in. Just show up, do the work and you'll do great!
Dean is easily the nicest prof Ive encountered at MUN. Lectures were informative and not too heavy and as long as you do the work you should have a pretty good chance at getting a decent grade.
Truly cares about his students and their success. There's a lot of oppritunites to get the mark you desire. Great prof and recommend this class to anyone considering it
Super easy!
Dr Bavington is the best prof I've ever had. He teaches the course in such a way that you have fun learning the material - no midterms/final exam & creative liberty with projects. I'm also SO SAD the site no longer offers the option to give a prof chili peppers - Dean's only request was that we give him some chili peppers on here. He's a real gem!
super easy.
Dean Bavington is the sweetest prof at MUN, however, he was a terrible lecturer. His D2L was a disaster and gave me a headache to look at it. You were never able to find the slides for the right class because he had them in about 100 different folders. Nice man and very caring but 10/10 DO NOT recommend him for Geo 1050.
Great prof, easy elective. If you are going to take Geo1050 you should 100% take it with Dean. I know other professors grade all the little assignments whereas Dean just wants you to understand so 45% of the course was pass/fail (essentially if you complete the work you get 100). He responds to emails very quickly always with helpful information.
Dean is one of the best professors at MUN. I think everyone should complete Geog 1050 and they should do it with Dean! His teaching style is relaxed and he allows plenty of engagement with the class, and ties the concepts to current news very well. He is very easy to talk to, will answer questions and his evaluations are miles ahead of the rest.
Hands down the easiest course at MUN, but he was one of the most boring professors I have ever had. The course topics were interesting but the lectures were SO boring.
Literally the easiest course and the best prof! I'm not sure why there are negative reviews as he genuinely wants you to understand the material and has assignmentss that are pass/fail so you can get some easy marks! He is easy to get in contact with if you're struggling. Posts everything to D2L. Take this course with him if you can!!
So nice and makes the lectures interesting. Easy class and not too many assignments. No tests or midterm/final exam only assignments given ahead of time!!
Havent even finished the semester yet and is already my favourite prof Ive had in my three years at MUN. He is super understanding and accommodating, very friendly and genuine. Strongly encourage taking his courses!!
Dean is a friendly individual that cares about his students and want them to succeed. There are no midterms or finals however, there are assignments and projects. He engages with his students by having discussions as he wants to hear our feedback. He responds to emails promptly and you can drop by his office if you have questions or want to chat.
Dean is a great professor, really cares about his students. No midterm or final, just easy papers which you can pick your topic on. 100% recommend him
I loved Dean as a prof. Hes super caring and understanding and gives great feedback on assessments.
Dr. Bavington is an amazing prof! He is really interested in what he is teaching and it shows. The content of the lectures are interesting and relavent. He is also an incredibly easy marker. He allows for students to pursue personal interests for the final projects and weekly reading journals. He is also very friendly and accessable.
Sadly, I have no electives left otherwise I would absolutely take a class with Dean again. He was so accommodating in the pandemic and the assignments were so straight forward. This was the highest grade I've ever received in a course throughout the 3 years of my degree which really speaks to his grading style and how interesting the course was.
Dr. Bavington is a sweet man who cares about the well-being of his students. He has no problem with giving extensions for an unlimited amount of time and is completely understanding of the challenges online schooling brings. His brightspace layout is confusing but his lectures are interesting and assignments are easy. Dean is a great prof.
Very understanding and willing to give extensions as long as requested in advance, no questions asked. Bi-weekly discussion posts and 5 assignments, which can be completed in an hour or two. No exams or tests. Easy/very easy grader and you will learn a lot. Highly recommend. Course expectations are clear, professor is easily accessible.
What a fantastic professor! Had him online and I would absolutely enroll in one of his courses again. He was so accommodating and helpful, and he genuinely cares about his students. He wants you to succeed and will do what he can to help you do that. Very fair grader, gives great feedback, and gives great lectures. Loved him!
Probably the kindest person I've ever met, not just as a professor but as a person in general. He really cares about his students and about the world. I learned so much from this class but never had any stress from it, and he gave really helpful and encouraging feedback.
Just a fantastic professor
There is quite a bit of writing and reading in this course, but the material is really interesting. Dr. Bavington is honestly an incredible professor. He is super flexible with deadlines, gives great feedback, and offers lots of choice in terms of reading/studying what you find most interesting in the course material. Excellent professor!
Probably the easiest course at MUN and he makes it even easier. There were only a few assignments and no quizzes or exams. He is extremely flexible with deadlines, Would definitely take another course with him again.
An awesome professor who cares about his students and wants us to do well.
Dean is the best professor I have had at mun! He is very nice and cares about all of his students, he wants everyone to succeed! He is MORE than accommodating with his due dates. And even gave me a chance to complete a few missing assignments well into the following semester. Dean is a blessing. I would consider taking any class if it were with him
I absolutely enjoyed this Geography class! Out of my classes this semester I always looked forward to Dean's Class. He is very kind and wants everyone to succeed. Very lenient on due dates. Very few assignments and they were easy to accomplish. He provides good feedback, and the lectures are enjoyable. You learn a lot, but it is fun. Loved him!
Dr. Bavington was hands down one of the best profs I've had at MUN. He truly cares about students and wants everyone to do well in his course. He's very flexible with due dates, his lectures are interesting and helpful, his assignments are easy, and there are no tests or final. Such a great elective and an easy A.
He is great with due dates and any situations u have. Good lectures and really easy to get ahold of.
An angel. That's all I have to say. Taking him again for GEO2001 for sure.
I did this course remotely and it was awesome. Dean is very caring. He met up with me on WebEx whenever I had any issue at all and he gave extensions without having any particular reason for all the assignments. The lectures are posted online and they are very clear and the assignments are very straightforward.
Dean was a fantastic prof! He had very clear expectations and rubrics for assignments, integrated current topics into lectures every week to keep them interesting, and was available for help whenever needed. I would definitely recommend him! One of my favourite profs I've had at MUN.
Dr. Bavington has been the best prof I've had at MUN. He is extremely easy going and will grant any extension if you ask. He marks really easy, and his assignments are straightforward. He is also pretty fast at responding to emails and will always help when needed.
Easily one of the best profs at MUN. It is obvious he cares about students and has a passion for what he teaches. Would absolutely take another class with him.
Dean Bavington is one of the best professors in the entire university. He has a very flexible deadline, that basically allowed us to submit the assignments anytime until the term ended. His gradings are also extremely easy and he genuinely cares about his students. If you have the chance to take him, do it.
Very good professor
I can't say enough good things about this guy, hands down the best professor at MUN. He genuinely cares for his students, easy grader, fair assignments, understanding and does a great job teaching his courses. Very respectable and great person all around.
amazing 10/10 take him if you get the chance !!!!!
He is a great prof, I would take any course he teaches.
Professor Dean is the nicest professor you'll ever meet, he also is very lenient and kind with the deadlines. He clearly cares a lot about his students. I actually enjoyed the course and learned a good bunch about geography too, even though I took this course as an elective! Highly Highly recommend !
Loved this course and Dean made it so much better!! Assignments were very reasonable & discussions were fun :) wasn't sure if I would like 2001 bc I had 1050 with a diff prof & it was just okay but I absolutely loved 2001! 100% recommend taking both with Dean! Soft deadlines, no midterm, no quizzes- just assignments, discussions, + a final project
Dr. Bavington is the best Prof at Memorial. He is so kind and genuinely cares about teaching and his students getting good grades. very easy to reach and so helpful. If he is available and you need geography courses at Mun do not think twice about taking him.
Dr. Bavington is an amazing prof! He genuinely wants the class to learn. The work load and grading is very fair. He's approachable and open to answering any questions. You can tell that he loves what he does, and it makes for a great learning environment.
I'm glad I took this course out of my options as an additional credit. I recommend this course and prof to any first-year students. It was easy to navigate course material, extensions available on all quizzes, and you could get it xtended if needed. Lots of practical info also. Takes forever to get grades back but I could deal with that.
Dr. Bavington is incredible. One of, if not the, best prof I've had at MUN. Laid out the course really logically, and left me with real takeaways from the course that I hadn't expected to get from a 2000-level. This is exactly how an online course is meant to be.
A final assignment and 10 quizzes based on some weekly readings which can be a bit vague but aren't too bad. Getting a good grade in this course is very easy while spending around 3 hours a week. As for Dean, he is a Godsend, he is super helpful, supportive and understanding. I don't think I've ever come across a prof as nice as Dean.
Gave automatic one week extension, weekly quizzes for the topic of the week that were fairly easy, Dean was insanely helpful and understanding, held a weekly tutorial class that didn't have mandatory attendance and was even recorded and posted with the notes, would absolutely take again!
Dean is probably my favourite professor during my 5 years at mun and I would take any class he offers any time! He is extremly respectful and does great lectures and would do anything for you to succeed. he is also super accomodating and treats his students like humans lol which i can not say about many profs at mun.
Dean is an amazing prof, he is so kind and caring. The course was online but he was very responsive and helpful if you are having trouble with the material or just have a simple question. Highly recommend!
Excellent prof. Dr. Bavington's lectures are very interesting and are recorded so attendance is not mandatory, he gives clear grading criteria for assignments, he is an easy grader, he gives students two weeks to complete each assignment and grants more time if needed, and he also allows students to resubmit work if they didn't receive full marks.
No longer the easy course it used to be. Dean has changed Geog 1050 to be absolutely convoluted, irrelevant, and honestly a huge time sink. I have dropped the course halfway during an assignment where I had to make notes about a 40 minute lecture on paper in a specific note format. This doesn't feel like geography anymore.
Online geo 2001 with him was awesome. He gave feedback on assignments that could actually be used towards the next one and is an easy grader. All the lectures were recorded. Was very understanding and would give extensions on assignments when needed. All materials we needed were provided for us in the course shell.
I'm not sure why this course with this prof has been rated so highly in the past. I'm taking this course now and it is too much work for an elective. I find myself putting more time into this course than my last year math course. The topics are interesting and the prof seems to care about what he teaches but this course is too overwhelming.
Geography 1050 is a pretty heavy course reading wise. However, the material is interesting and not overly difficult. Dean is also incredibly kind, lenient with extension's, and genuinely wants his students to do well, I would recommend this course to anyone.
If you are not ready to read more in a week then you did your entire life… do not take this course!
Heard this course was supposed to be a breeze with Dean, it wasn't!!! Many assignments and quizzes including the 20% final assignment is graded based on 0%, 50%, 75% or 100%. No in between. Makes your grade drop pretty quickly. Mind you, the course material is way to much and you are expected to read all of it in order to complete quizzes or work.
Dean is a MUN gem. He's extremely kind, compassionate and genuinely wants his students to do well. Reading wise, it is heavy in reading, but it's very manageable. As long as you do what's expected of you it's easy to do well
