A real math nerd. His method of teaching is pretty clear, but the class itself is difficult. Pay a lot of attention to what he says in class. His stories (I think) are top-notch. See him in his office and he'll tell you whatever you want to know.
had him a about a year ago. i really enjoyed his teachings, and i thought he was really nice. he has a great homework policy, and his tests are reasonable. if you don't mind zoology tangents, then you should be ok.
Tons of homework, the course goes over lots of material, but the tests are easy. The problem was he rarely lectured, he wants you to read the book, and he gets to talk about anything he wants to during the 2 hours. Worthless lecture if you ask me.
Lectures were a little boring. Tests were easy so long as you did the HW.
Fast paced, hard grading. I am only aware of two students who had above a C in my class by the end of the Semester. He is a nice guy, but very moody at times.
Great person to learn calc from.
Funny and clear
i took finite math and beware that unless you are very interested in Math this class is too difficult.I had a very hard time understanding his lecture cause he doesnt like to explain the details.lots of homework every week that needs to be on time.my mother died &i didnt turnin some so he dropped me
HORRIBLE. Do not take this class. He talks about everything but math, then expects you to know the material. Lots of homework. Take bunas or shell. I dont know how gooch has stayed there this long!!
His set up really worked for me. I hate math, but if I have to take it again it'll be with him. I never heard a word about zoology and he accepts late homework up until the final. I missed a lot of class, so that saved me. I'd have failed with any other teacher.
he is a good math teacher. if you dont mind some tangents. some of the stories were intresting or funny, he also excepted late work and will help you during office hours.
He teaches about many different subjects, and once in a while you get some math. Stereotypical math enthusiast. mind is all over the place. Take him if you like math already, otherwise he'll be hard to understand.
super nice guy. goes over hw ?'s in class, gives ample time to hand in, & accepts late. some interesting storytelling only after all ?'s have been asked and material is gone over. he expects you to know prereq material very well: he is a genuine math nerd...he loves it & thinks everyone's like him.
He's one of those awkward geniuses. He walks around and factors address numbers. He's multi-talented and extremely interesting, and will make math relevant and fun, even algebra.
There are good things and bad things about this teacher/course. The good is that he accepts late homework until the FINAL! this is sooo rare in college. It is saving me. His tests aren't that hard. The bad is it's hard to sit through his class because he "goes off on tangents" way too much.
Gooch is an old-fashioned nerd, an almost perfect math teacher. His lectures are concise, to the point, and demonstrate a love of the subject. I found him amusing and helpful, if a tad arrogant. His math 9 is not a class where you can skip the book-- lectures are a supplement to the book and not a replacement. Try this class out.
I wouldn't recomend taking this class with Gooch, If you have a question sometimes he tells you that he doesn't have time to go over it, come on your a teacher. I never have liked math and now i dislike it even more...
He was great! He was funny and really cared about whether the students learned the material. Very lenient grading on tests and homework. Take him if you can!
Gooch is very good at math, but half the time he's talking about something totally irrelevant, like his family! He's a hard grader, confusing, & doesn't allow notes during tests! Though he will accept late homework up until the final. If you are not a math wiz, your gonna have a difficult time!
Gooch was awesome. I had him during the summer which is usually really hard but he explained things well and answered any questions students asked. He is a lot of a fun and very knowledgable about his subject. Tests follow lectures almost to the T.
best math teacher ive ever had! Reasonable and understanding..interested in the students success..but if u try to bs through the class..he won't enjoy ur company!
He's so sexy with that beard. I don't know how the ladies resist. I like his relevant math life stories. It makes math funner.
The guy plays with his beard all the time, which make me actually want to go to class. Actually he is a really good teacher and his stories make the class more interesting. But his name is Gooch, I call him the Goochmeister, and his beard is awesome.
Dean Gooch is one of those teachers who always pretends that he can't explain something to the class because it is too advanced for them, when really he just doesn't quite get it himself. His ego gets in the way of his teaching, and he fails to really clarify the course material. Plus he saves reviewing homework until the day before the test!
Gooch is a math nerd. Sometimes he can be a little to distant, but the subject matter is also very abstract. Do the homework and see him in his office hour and the class will be a breeze.
This is one of the few math professors whom I actually liked. He was helpful and patient with me, reasonable with his homework and reasonable with his grading. One of the few math classes that _didn't_ give me anxiety...he's great for people who just aren't "math people".
He's a nice guy who seems genuinely interested in what he's teaching. However, he always tells really bad jokes and delves into of random subjects, none of which have anything to do with numbers and equations. He is very boring, despite his attempts to be funny. Take his class only if you can teach yourself and/or have friends who can help you.
This guy tells the lamest jokes and you just have to laugh. He wears this pink shirt like every other day. He is great at explaining things, but make sure you read ahead. He got a little snappy with me for asking the wrong question. He always lets you have 1 page of notes for the test, and 4 on the final. Not much of a struggle, I got a B.
tells lame jokes alot and tells stories that have nothing 2 do with math, but after u get used 2 it hes an alright teacher. not heavy with the homework, tests are pretty short and he doesn't pick the hardest questions possiable for the test, there pretty much the same as class examples, i would take him again
He seems to be pretty familiar with his subject, but getting it across well is another matter. With a new concept, the explanation usually goes like this: "Ok, don't ask me why, but this is how you do matriculation, and it's hard and long." Has a habit of telling very unfunny jokes. =D I don't recommend Mr. Gooch unless you rock at math.
My favorite teacher so far! Some people hated the fact that he tried to lighten things up by telling silly jokes, and some people though they weren't funny... but he was just so sweet and harmless, you had to laugh. He's very smart and loves what he does. He's easy to talk to, and helpful as well. I'd recomend him, whether your good at math or not.
The teacher was very bright and knew his stuff. Always explained things well but was not very approachable. He would embarass students and made people feel stupid for asking questions. He also has a problem with talking about stuff not related to the class. He would spend 30 minutes talking about his college days. Over all not a good experience.
By far the worst math teacher I have ever had. He gives brief examples of what the homework will cover and is very disorganized in his teaching. If you can teach yourself the material than you will be fine and you must be a natural at math to do well in the class.
Gooch comes off as one strange cookie and I really did not like him at first. I gave him a chance and really ended up enjoying him as a teacher. I'm not a math person, and Gooch really opened the doors for me. I will always appreciate Gooch as a teacher.
He teaches to the people who get it. The rest he isnt too concerned. Unless you're a pretty girl. As a guy, i received little help, and am fortunate to be strong in math w/o his help. Likes to be smartest person in room. And, dont ask for help during exams, it is allowed, but for me was purposely next to useless. Insect major?!?
You gotta love Dean. Yeah, he's definitely goofy, but you really gotta love the guy for trying to be funny. His lecturing style may be too unstructured for some and he does tend to ramble aimlessly. On the flipside, his exams were really fair, no trick questions, no curve balls, lenient grader. Material on exams comes straight off homework.
Dean was a relatively awesome math teacher. Even though he would go on random tangents at times during lectures he gives students the necessary tools to pass his class. Do your homework, don't fall behind, and don't overestimate his tests. The exams aren't as bad once they sit in front of you. He's a very helpful professor. Strongly recommend!
I dropped his class for personal reasons. Dean is adiverse & interesting teacher. He is helpful and makes sure you understand the material. You have to be quick though as he does ramble, he does loose track sometimes. However, if you aren't smart enough to keep up and stay on the ball, you shouldn't be in his class.
dean is not a very good teacher, he actually doesn't even teach at all. your gonna have to be able to learn from your book on your own. he's always going off topic, he'll mark down points for just writing on the back of your paper or not writing your graphs exactly straight. he never corrects your work, to let ya learn from your mystakes.
Terrible! Spends entire classes answering homework questions and doesn't actually get to the lesson, so when the test comes don't expect to be prepared properly. Very unorganized lesson plan.
not the very best to work with medium level students
DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU LOVE HOME WORK!! he lets you drop your lowest exam score but you have to turn in EVERY piece of hw assigned (1 is due every day!) overall he doesn't even teach anything or explain anything AT ALL! it is too much busy work for people with normal class loads and jobs. he also wont help if u ask for clarification on a topic
He spends most of the class sharing anecdotes that have nothing to do with Calculus. Most of the stories have a negative tone that are just depressing. After hearing the unnecessarily long story about the premedical A-student who couldn't get accepted to any medical school, I've decided to drop this class.
i love this guy's hair and his permanent sandals. he spends most of class time telling stories about people he met or whatever. he does not know what section we are on or return our graded homework. he seems really disorganized and waste valuable class time with things not related to math. maybe i'm harsh, but i think he an awful teacher.
Gooch...oh Gooch. He's an interesting fellow, with an even more..interesting..sense of humor. "i guess they shut the air off at eight.." He has a good time talking, mostly to himself, but he always keeps it interesting.
This guy is so old school and was not help full with learning at all. He goes of on crazy stories that have nothing to do with math. He lets you turn in work but i would stay away if you can.
Weirdest teacher ever but I learned so much from him. He was very helpful except he would go on random stories about donkeys or other out of the blue things but all together I learned a lot which was really suprising. And the beard... AWESOME!
Lots of homework! If you show up to class and take notes and ask questions he's than happy to help. He does tend to go off on tangents about insects, owls, whatever, but some stories relate to the problems being lectured on. Not a bad teacher.
Does no review whatsoever. Expects you to know absolutely everything ever learned. If you ask,he makes you feel stupid. His "teaching style" is very unorganized. Goes off on random stories, then runs out of time to cover the material. Class has a very negative tone and over half the people dropped. Take someone else, especially for advanced classes.
The material is very different from 1A, but it's really not that hard. Gooch just does not TEACH the class. He merely assumes that you've read the book and TAUGHT YOURSELF the material so he could do some examples during class. Very unorganized lecture, makes frequent mistakes on board, makes things unnecessarily confusing. Terrible teacher.
He is one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. I took this course over the summer. He could not stay on topic and could not get through the material in an efficient manner. He simply did not cover 50% of the material on tests, etc! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dean Gooch is the most caring teacher on campus. He stands up for his students and understands where they are coming from and who has what it takes. His tests are straight forward, his lectures are funny,HW is mandatory, and quizzes are ungraded. Do your HW and study the hard ones and the quizzes and TALK TO HIM. He's a good one-enjoy the experience.
like this guy a lot i had him for a low level math course. i liked how he chose homework based on class need and thus you cannot get it ahead of time. loved his stories and how he would make up problems on the spot. i liked how he chose hw so a little was done each night on each section instead of a section a day. highly recommend this prof.
The homework load for his classes definitely keep you busy. But if you stay on track with the homework, his exams test your familiarity with the concepts so they are not as brutal as the homework. It might be that after doing so much homework, that the exams seem easier. Either way, his courses definitely help you learn the math you need to learn.
He was a good guy and tried hard to help the students. Unfortunately, his lectures were unorganized and chaotic. There were long deviations from the material, eating up valuable class time. This meant the student has to teach themselves from the book at night. If you can handle that, go for it. I don't learn that way and had to transfer out.
Dean is a great person, but I don't think he realizes the amount of homework he assigns, also his lecturing is less than desirable for Math 4. Do not get me wrong, I love the man, but his teaching style is harsh. He is a harsh grader. show up the class, do the homework, and talk to him and you have a good shot at passing. Just passing.
I liked Gooch. Goofy guy, went off on stories that had nothing to do with math. Sorta heavy with the homework, but the tests were straightforward, relatively easy compared to the homework, and basically only tested to make sure you knew the key concepts, no trick questions.
Lots of homework. Felt like 5+ units but if you do all of the homework on time and study, the exams are extremely easy. The class gets easier towards the end and it always helps to read the chapter ahead of time. Even though his teaching is awkward, go to his office hours for help or use cramster. This class is a great introduction to actual math.
Terrible teacher. Wanders off on subjects that don't have anything to do with math. Test are harder than the random homework that he assigns. His homework is so overwhelming that you don't have time for other classes. He's also just straight bad at walking you through the math problems. Don't recommend unless you already know the subject.
Gooch is really intelligent and fond of his subject but because he isn't great at explaining new concepts at a reasonable pace without going into confusing proofs right away I can't recommend him unless you either already know the subject or are a math major good at learning from the textbook. He can also be rude sometimes if he doesn't like you.
Really funny guy, makes the lectures interesting. I highly recommend him. He goes off topic but he still covers the material. Gives more homework than most teachers. He's a generous grader - gives partial credit for writing ANYTHING, so don't leave questions blank! Always willing to help students, even if they can't make office hours.
Nice guy if you give it effort, but he can go off on tangents a lot. He expects a good comprehension level, but if you passed 1A recently you should be fine.
Good instructor. No BS, straight forward.
His exams have challenging questions, but they are doable. I thought he was very funny. Gives a lot of homework, but grades it easily. Do the HW and you will be fine for exams.
He is unorganized in lecture and often goes off topic in lecture, but he is very helpful outside of class and is very straight forward in what he puts in his exams. To get a good grade in his class, you must do the homework.
Great at explaining the material when you help him focus. Often goes off topic. Tests are fairly similar to lectures and quizzes. DO QUIZZES. However, he is extremely vague on what will be on the final. Final was NOT cumulative, just the newest material (spent a lot of wasted studying on topics from the beginning of semester).
Very funny man, but goes off topic way too much. Hard to know what final/tests are going to be like. He is obviously smart, but i wouldn't take him again because of the lack of concrete teaching.
Hostile person, not approachable. Poor lecturer; all he does is re-dos proofs that are done for you in the reading (wtf?!), therefor I learn nothing new and coming to class is useless. Unreasonable amount of homework (a lot). Not always mentally/emotionally prepared for class and it negatively affects his lecturing. Avoid him if you can.
Always off topic constantly. Not helpful when a question is asked & can be down right rude if someone doesn't get something. Total scatter brain & gives to many options on how to do a problem, making it confusing. Math should be black and white. I don't want options! If he doesn't want to fully explain the info he should activate the online TxBk
If you take him get ready to spend all your time in the tutorial center or on youtube. Impossible to follow a lot of his lecture and he goes off on tangents. Tests are fair.
If you have the desire to learn about bugs, typewriters, the weather and the ancient egyptians, by all means, take this class. The tangents never cease. Also, most of class time will be spent going over homework instead of learning new concepts in class. This is a dangerous cycle where the class learns most material from completed homework.
Instructor does not come to class prepared with lecture notes for himself. If he isn't going off on some irrelevant tangent then he's staring at the white board trying to figure out what he's doing, as such the lectures are useless. Only gives simple examples, rarely gives applied examples. Be prepared to learn on your own ... avoid at all costs.
worst math teacher ever! won't help you at all. no study guides. useless homework assignments. won't answer questions. overall horrible teacher!
He is really nice, but I would not suggest him if you have trouble with math. His exams are not too difficult, but his lectures can be a bit confusing, and he gets frustrated if students ask questions that he thinks should already be known. He has good days, and he has bad days. He will help you if you go to his office hours.
DO NOT TAKE! Horrible teacher, gives wayyyy too much homework. Horrible lecturer, expect to learn everything on your own. Really rude and does not answer questions thoroughly. Find another professor, trust me, worst teacher in all my years of school!!
TERRIBLE class. I'm an easy going person who can tolerate a wide range of personalities and teaching styles, however, this teacher was so rude and disorganized in his teaching ability (going off topic frequently on unrelated topics) I soon dropped his class, choosing not to waste my money or any more of my time. My impression: He's burned out.
I would only suggest taking a class with Gooch if you are in love w/math. Got a B in the class but had to work extremely hard....LOTS of homework, disconnect between homework and exams...you will have to study a lot to do well. Not always clear w/ lectures, get ready to use youtube. Nice guy, funny, but not always prepeared or clear. Tough grader!
Gooch is a great professor who is more than willing to help anyone who looks for it. His lectures may be more focused on the concept rather than practice but that is what homework is for. If you need/know what extra help you need he will go out of his way to help you. Don't take him if you want an easy A take him because he teaches math.
Dean is a good teacher, when you are a math scholar. Coming from someone who isn't very good at math to begin with, and will ask those "dumb" questions, I just don't think he is passionate enough to teach the people who aren't all that at math. I don't suggest him if u test into 155. He makes you feel dumb if he doesn't like the question you ask.
I have taken over 6 semesters of math which I have mostly enjoyed. Being in Dean Gooch's class for Math 2 has to be the worst I've ever had. You have to teach yourself everything, since Gooch is always asking students for help on problems they asked in the first place. Should be the other way around. If you can teach yourself everything, youaregood
Gooch is an incredible instructor. He makes math fun, and keeps students involved in the learning process (he doesn't spew a bunch of info at you and expect you to remember it instantly). He is extremely helpful, and very funny in my opinion. Dean Gooch is simply one of the best math instructors I have ever had in my life.
Took 155 as a summer class there was quite a bit of work as expected but Dean does everything to make sure that you pass. A Quiz each class which u keep which will be on exam and tons of time to go over homework. He'll spend all class if he has to to make sure you understood your homework. If you keep up with your homework its an easy B or A.
You don't learn anything in the classroom. You are expected to teach yourself the material. Most of the time the class consisted of going over homework. I feel like I learned how to do a lot of math because his class forces you to work hard. Its teachers like this that the United States has math anxiety. He doesn't make any exceptions.
Horrible teacher. Do not take this class. Find someone else. Avoid like black plague. I lived in tutorial and still got a D. Useless as a teacher. Needs to retire. Burnt out. Takes glee in failing students.
You can get an A if you go balls-out studying. No handholding. Tests were pulled from homework and some lecture (if he says "this would be good on a test," he means it). Easy homework grader. He complained about his lower math classes to us, so I feel for the lower math students who had a hard time. Perhaps wouldn't recommend for lower math.
Dean is a very caring teacher and is lenient but firm with homework. He will push you to do your best and does his best to explain the material. I would take his class again.
He clearly knows the subject! My comment is regarding the text book. Having access to online lectures helps greatly. The class required the "NEW! ENHANCED WebAssign EDITION" When I asked for the access code, his curt response floored me. "Oh, I don't do that!" WHY DID YOU REQUIRE A WEB BOOK? I receive a lot of help from the online resource!
Worst math teacher ever. I don't like being that harsh but, it is the truth. First of all he gets off topic very fast and he lectures about history for the first 30 minutes of class, wasting valuable time. Second, he does not explain concepts well at all, he gets lost in his words and comes off as very confusing.
It appears as if he doesn't care anymore, he: shows up unprepared, make tons of mistakes, goes off on ridiculous tangents, tests on concepts that we never covered and the list goes on and on. Do yourself a favor and stay far far away from this guy and all of his classes.
He was so kind and helpful with my questions during his office hours, very peaceful as well. He is very interested in the subject, and seeks to bond with his students, which is why he chats about non-math topics, I suspect. He even feeds his students and gave me cups of tea!
Took Math 5 and 2 from Gooch. I found his Math 2 10x easier than his Math 5. He's always willing to help in his office hour. Last, I made this mistake in both classes: he will make test questions based off lecture examples that may or may not appear on homework. Write down every example problem he gives in class and review before exam. Love him.
Good guy, terrible teacher. Specially in the summer. he rambles on in class endlessly and we learn nothing... the homework he assigns is something we never cover
The most difficult math class I've taken to date. Very helpful teacher, if you approach him during office hours. This is a college class, do all the homework. Also, some of the test questions are not on the HW or class examples... so you need to understand the equations. Would avoid in the future, but the knowledge was top shelf.
Horrendous instructor. Extremely disorganized, doesn't relate to the students, and is ill prepared for his "lectures." There aren't clear cut due dates and he WILL NOT follow the schedule outlined in the syllabus. I liked and did well in math before this professor. I felt disheartened and depressed just stepping into his class daily.
Good person, terrible teacher. And I mean TERRIBLE. Highest grade in the class after exam number 2 was an 86 which was mine and I still felt terrible and like I learned nothing. His "lectures" are not clear at all and his homework does not correlate with what he goes over in class.
Not for the faint of heart. Gooch is tough and will make you work hard. Tests are difficult, main reason being it usually covers way too much material for one exam and you have no cookie cutter approach of what to actually study for. Assignments are nothing but mountains of work (although not too hard).
Best way to describe Gooch: He is so skilled in mathematics that he cannot teach it in a way that allows people of a lesser understanding to grasp the concepts. In-class lectures are unproductive. Gooch gives far too much homework, and assignments tend to involve teaching yourself the material. Do not take, even as a last resort. You'll regret it.
Don't take this class. Worked really hard and got a B. Lectures are awful, likes to talk about himself and not the material. When he does talk about the material it is often unclear and you spend lots of time watching him look at the board confused. Lots of homework always. Very frustrated with the class and would highly recommend not taking.
Lectures were not very clear and often did not help to learn material. Be prepared to learn most topics from the book or other sources. First two exams are rough but it gets a little bit easier towards the end. Last month of class had 3 exams and was extremely rushed. Study the tests for the final and you should be alright.
He talks about his life more than he lectures. If you ask for clarification he gets bothered & does a tiny break down that doesn't help at all. He expects you to know everything on your own. You simply have to teach yourself! Read the book & make flashcards! Tests are hard. Extra Credit is even harder. He drops 1 test score if you do all homework.
I did not pass but i learned an incredible amount from him. he is a great teacher.
So much homework! I And his lectures? Just no. He starts with math and gets so far off subject for so long that it's hard to stay awake. It's almost not worth it to go. If you take him, be ready to teach yourself. I went to his office hours for help EVERY week. He didn't help at all. I'm usually a straight A student too.
Gooch is AWFUL. He doesn't explain things well, he goes off on bird walks and forgets what he was talking about, and he refuses to assist students who are having a hard time with the subject matter. He told one of the girls in my class that she was stupid when she asked a question. Do NOT choose this teacher if you don't have to.
Awesome guy, horrible teacher. The two hour lecture is a complete waste of time. You have to learn all the material from out of the book by yourself. He spends an easy 30+ mins a day telling stories when it should be used to finish at least 1 section of 2 we are supposed to learn in class each day.
This course wasn't easy, but it was definitely do-able. Gooch is very knowledgeable and easy to approach.
Very helpful teacher, but not an easy course.
For Dean's first time teaching this course I thought he did a very good job. He drops your lowest test score which is helpful and he also gives quizzes which don't affect your grade so you can gauge what is going to be on the next test. A friend was taking this course with Bunas and it sounded much worse. I would recommend Dean for this course.
Dean is a decent teacher. I took him during a summer intensive course. Another teacher taught the first portion of the semester and then took took over for the rest. Its clear he is a genius, however I cannot recommend him. His overall ethic and intentions in teaching the class were clear. He did not make extra time to help those that might need it
So helpful and really cares about helping you succeed. Can be difficult if you don't follow along to lectures but I found it to be pretty easy.
He's a very funny, friendly guy, but his teaching is a bit chaotic. The way he writes on the bored is disorganized and sometimes he gets off topic. The hw load is HEAVY! He gives these quizzes that don't count towards your grade. Those are easy, but the exams were awful. If you take him you will end up having to teach yourself from the book.
He works out sample problems to explain concepts and expects students to participate. A lot of homework, but it's a 5 credit class and it's doable. Sometimes gets off topic, but has some funny stories to tell. Tests can be tough, but if you do the homework and pay attention, you'll do well. Gooch is a great guy and a great teacher.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He was nice as a person, but I was drowning in hw to the point my tutor's jaw dropped. Grading was simply unfair, we probably got 2 problems done a class because he spent so much time drawing a graph (I timed 20 minutes once, seriously). The class completely depended on the TA meetings YOU SHALL NOT PASS (you'll get it)
Goes out of topic all the time he doesn't teach you what you need to know to answer your hw
The best math professor and all around great person!!
oh man this guy is rad as a being but as a summer teacher NOOOOO WHYYYY so many tangents and then hella hw that, OOPS, he ran out of time and didn't cover.... if u already know the material this guy is the man but if u need any extra help, especially in a summer semester, ur totally screwed unless taking that class is your only commitment
Extremely challenging for second semester calculus. Gets sidetracked in lecture often, and needs to be reeled back in. Homework takes a large time investment, and can't be done at the last minute. Test schedule moves around. I did awful on the first midterm, but fought hard for a B in the class. Form a study group ASAP.
Like other students have reported, he fails to work out problems on the board. He skips around to different topics, is totally disorganized and not fit for the classroom. Skip math that semester if he is the only teacher available.
Dean is a funny guy. Very kind when you have a casual conversation with him during office hours and kind in class. However, this semester class was spent rushing though materials and going off topic. Expect to learn everything on your own. The books were awful. He doesn't really explain his thinking or clarify how to do things. It was rough.
Dean Gooch is a good guy, funny and has a sense of being understanding towards students. But his teaching is not great, and his lectures are very disorganized. Be prepared for long assignments and studying material on your own that was not explained by him since he is not good at explaining it when going over homework or tests.
If you take any class with this man you're in for a treat. In math courses, you don't take the subject you take the professor. This man was quite honestly the most rude, annoying, and off subject teacher I have ever encountered. Saying how most of us don't deserver to be in college and we are wasting the tax payers money. DON'T TAKE HIM.
The worst math class I ever took. This professor even did not know how to solve the questions in the assignment. What he did in the class is just read and copy the texts that he prepared for the class. His exams are horrible, none of the questions are similar to the assignment or examples on the textbook.
he is very persnickety, 2nd half of semester he got really snippy and sometimes downright rude to students. Gives VERY long HW assignments (I work slow, but take 4-8h per assignment), uses a poor book. Goes off on tangents/rants often. will sometimes spend a whole class going over HW questions. ONLY take if you are a math major.
I took math 25 with Gooch and had to spend about 30 hours in the math lab because he is terrible at explaining the concepts. During his tests it feels like he is trying to trick and and watch you fail. On one of them I was literally the only person who passed, with a 71%. Don't take this professor.
Dean is a great teacher but you have to really try for the grade that you want. Showing up to class everyday and doing the homework is a mandatory to be successful in this class. Tests can be challenging but you can soon see what kind of problems will be on the test and doesn't throw any curveballs. Great teacher if you're willing to learn.
Okay lecturer, but spends too much time on trivial/unnecessary example problems.
the worst teacher I have ever had by far. yells at students. doesnt allow questions. very bi polar, super nice one day and rude the next. includes completely unimportant, unrelated lectures and just rambles on. handwriting hard to read. absolutely offers no help whatsoever and expects you to just know the material
His mood was not consistent he was either polite or rude. He would ramble off topic consistently. He was not clear and rarely allowed questions. His lectures are very heavy. I honestly could go on about how I would recommend not to take any of his classes.
Ok let's talk about Dean. He's a genius and obviously knows the material he's teaching but his way of lecturing was not for me. The notes are unclear/not organized. Gives a lot of homework so be prepared to stay home the whole weekend and do matrices. make sure you understand the material inside and out, his way of testing is very different from Hw
hardest class I ever have taken. terrible teacher, you have to teach yourself the material i had to hire a tutor to help also. Avoid taking him at all costs causes way too much stress and way too much hw. DONT TAKE HIM
Really interested in his subject matter and compelling in his lectures. He fielded each question equally and seemed to care about the success of his students.
Terrible at teaching discrete mathematics. Would not recommend to my worst enemies. Exams don't match what is taught in class or what is in the book. Avoid like the plague.
Dean is a very gentle guy, but his class was very challenging. Some degree of self-learning is required to pass his exams, but after the first exam, the type of questions asked on exams becomes apparent. He makes himself available during office hours and does indeed try to help his students. However, knowing the material thoroughly is crucial.
Dean is a very sweet, humble, patient and caring person. He is very helpful to those who have questions or are struggling to understand.
I am biased because I already took AP Calc in HS but here goes: Relatively easy A but participation matters. He does not use canvas only old style report cards after grading periods. A very average teacher, but means well and is interesting to talk to. However he likes to binge lecture subjects without spacing them out in an organized manner.
When he's in a bad mood, you can certainly tell because he will be angry throughout class to students. He goes off topic a lot in his lectures, and he doesn't explain anything throughout his lectures. His notes are messy and I literally had to learn everything from the book. Didn't learn a thing from him, and had to drop because I was going to fai
Grade is based on homework, 4 midterms, and a final. There is definitely a lot of homework (18 total and each take 3-6 hours). As long as you keep up and actually do the homework, exams are quite easy. Attendance is definitely required as he sometimes does things differently from the textbook. If you put in the work, you should be fine.
Save yourself. SERIOUSLY. I thought the ratings on this professor still described a professor I could take and pass if I put in the work. I REGRET IT SO MUCH. Unhelpful, off-topic, and convoluted hour and a half long lectures. Grading for homework were based off completion. Exams were never related to anything for class. The worst . Just don't.
He will field all questions equally as long as he does think they are stupid. He gets off topic a lot and gets mad is you mention this. The homework takes hours and hours DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you are not 100% confident in your math skills
This class has a ridiculous course load, many of my peers were spending over 5 hours on each homework assignment. Dean has a condescending attitude. You'll end up having to teach yourself the entire course because his lectures consist of mathematical history rather than the actual math. His explanations are vague. DON'T JOIN THIS CLASS!
He might well be a good guy if you knew him as a person but he is absolutely a terrible teacher. He is completely off topic in lecture, and I mean stopping in the middle of showing us formulas to talk for 20minutes about the history of the first algebra book kind of off topic, and the rest of his lectures are extremely convoluted and unorganized.
Has a good heart and a very nice guy but his teaching style could do better. He goes off topic a lot and barely teaches you. He expects the students to teach themselves with the textbook and the textbook itself has nothing to do with his tests and quizzes.
I was enrolled in Gooch's Math 1A class this semester for a couple days before I dropped. Dropping his class was the best decision I made in my college career so far. He frequently goes off topic during lectures. In addition, it is hard to figure out what he is writing on the board. He also assigns way too much homework. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
Where to even start? Pontificates for way too long just to fluff himself. Sometimes gets mad and yells at the class over small dumb stuff, blaming students for falling behind (when he tells pointless stories for hours). Once said that crabs are arachnids??? On a positive note he knows some cool math facts.
He can be funny but does not explain the material very well. Instead he relives the past with stories of his previous students and interactions.
Gooch was the hardest/worst professor Ive ever had in any subject in college, and this is my second time in college! During class time, he would cover one section and assign us two sections for homework! I had such little knowledge of what was going on that I dropped the class. In the following semester, I took Math 1A with Gaye and got an A.
I tried taking calculus with Gooch two semesters ago, but wasnt prepared and I dropped the class. Last semester, I took his class again and I got an A. My trick to getting a good grade in his course was to read and do all the examples before class. Gooch is honestly a really nice guy. He even let me use the teacher bathroom one time. Total G!
When registering for a calculus class, Gooch was the only teacher available due to my low priority. I read the reviews here and thought that if I study hard, I can still get the grade I want. That is not true at all. In this class, you are basically on your own. You have to teach yourself the material and in class he goes over SOME of the hmwk.
I took math 1A with Dean last semester and got an A. As long as you do the homework (albeit there is a lot) then the exams are extremely simple and straightforward. Im in Math 1B with Dean again this semester and again have a very strong A. There are no surprises in this class. You do the homework, you do well on exams, you pass the class.
Gooch is a nice guy and tries to help you do well and get an A in the class. His lectures were not that organized and we had to follow a weird format. But, the tests and quizzes were not hard at all. The questions came from the homework or in class examples. Even the final, which is worth 50% of the total grade, was not hard at all.
Dean is a very humble, funny and good man. I hate math though and wasn't looking forward to taking it. However, I never missed Dean's classes because he was a good teacher. He's a tough grader but that's just part of the educational system. Do your homework, do well on the test and show up to class. You'll be fine!
Oh god. I should of dropped not only earlier in the semester, but definitely during SIP was issued. Doesn't use canvas, so during this we had to e m a i l pictures of our homework. Thank god for his assistant, she did most of the heavy lifting but Gooch? Not a great instructor. Would not suggest taking a class with him teaching at all.
I absolutely loved my time in Goochs class. He is a great professor and an even greater man. He is always available to ask for help and made calculus much easier to comprehend. The tests were easy. They just required a lot (Hours upon Hours) of studying just like any other calculus class. I loved his homework format. They made me organized.
This was a very difficult class. In fact, I think it was more difficult than it had to be. However, this class prepared me well for my future math classes because it forced me to actually understand the concepts instead of memorize the answers. The study skills that I gained from this class were the best part about the class.
Gooch was a real and genuine guy. I could tell that he really loved math and projected that on his students. The class was difficult and I had to do a lot of work on my own. I read the textbook and watched online YouTube videos to help. Tests were pretty difficult, but I always somehow did very well on them. Id recommend gooch to my friends.
Gooch was a solid choice. His class was at 7 in the morning from monday through thursday. He was a good lecturer and I gained a lot from them. He was always available during his office hours to answer and clarify anything. My only issue with him was that the final exam was worth half of the grade. I had a solid A in the class until the final.
Gooch was a joy to have. His class was somewhat hard and did require time spent on it outside of class. Class was fun to go to. He told us many funny and interesting stories that were not related to math. The tests were hard and he sometimes threw curveballs at us. If you study and go to office hours, you are guaranteed to pass the class.
I took calculus in high school a while back and math 1a with gooch was a real refresher course. In lecture, gooch would not always finish the topic at hand and we had to read the material by ourselves. Homework was doable and was only graded on completion. The tests were graded generously. He gave us partial credit on incorrect answers.
Dean was a great professor. Class was challenging but arent all calculus classes a challenge? There are many negative reviews on Dean, but I suspect that they are all from a few students that did not do well. I studied pretty hard, but I thought my art class was harder than this. Final was worth 50 percent of the grade but it was easy.
I took Math 1B with Gooch last semester and it started every day at 7:30 AM! Despite this, Gooch showed up to class every day with an upbeat attitude and was ready to teach. I learned a lot from this class even though I struggled mightily in it. In the beginning, I was completely lost and was failing the class. I pulled it together in the end.
Mr. Gooch is a very interesting guy. In class, he frequently talks about subjects that are related to calculus and to the real world at the same time. It made his class much more interesting. In my opinion, the class was somewhat difficult. I had to study quite a bit and still did not always get the grade that I wanted.
Gooch was the right professor for me. I did well in his class and his teaching style played a big part in my success. Id highly recommend taking this class with this teacher.
Mr. Gooch was always keeping the class real with us students. He went beyond the classroom and showed us the applications of calculus in the real world. Id take his 1B class next semester if possible.
I took Goochs pre calculus class last summer. It was amazing. He is a wonderful teacher and an even better person. I frequently attended his office hours and talked to him about many subject areas besides math. His assignments were not difficult to complete and his tests did not ask any difficult questions.
This is the worst math professor I have ever had. Office hours were unbelievably inaccessible, he goes on bizarre tangents during class, extremely rude and unhelpful to ALL students, grades very harshly, and I could go on. Please save yourself and choose someone else.
Even though I did not get the grade I wanted in this class, I feel like still learned so much from Gooch. His lectures were interesting and were full of energy. His office hours are also nice to go to and I frequently attended them to take about math, among other things. The tests were super hard though. They required true mastery of the class.
I tried taking this class a couple of times in the past, but I finally succeeded in doing well with Gooch. He works with students and is never too hard on us regarding exams.
Gooch is a very firm and disciplined teacher. His class has structure and this structure helped me learn a lot. I improved my study skills not only for this class. I want to take him for Math 1C next semester.
This was not easy for me, but I liked Goochs class. I came away from the class with better study skills and methods.
Gooch is just such a nice person. His class is very laid back and he takes the time to answer all of my questions in office hours.
This was the first year he was teaching online. The pace of the class with the amount home work that is expected was unrealistic. It was not at all geared towards the 2 day a week class, perhaps the 4 day a week class did not suffer the same pacing issues... Especially with the fire closure and him being behind before hand.
Gooch is a really great math instructor. Only thing I disliked about his class was that the tests were the large portion of the grade. Besides that, he is also a very interesting person. Had quite a few fun conversations with him about math and its applications in real life.
He comes of a gruff, but he is actually a kind person once you approach him. His lectures can be a little long-winded, but his quizzes and exams are just like the homework he assigns. He is a good person and a good teacher.
Lectures can sometimes become boring or sidetracked but so learn the material on your own and use class time to ask questions. Attendance isn't mandatory and he doesn't use canvas. Overall pretty chill for a math class. Do all the homework and you will be fine as the quizzes (not graded) will make up the exams.
Gooch doesn't use canvas, everything is done though email -lots of them. As of over a month into class, still haven't gotten any homework back. Can check answers on tests with CAS, but he grades hard on notation and simplification. Quizzes are not graded. Lecture style didnt work for me, not enough instruction. Be ready to teach yourself concepts
I have never had a teacher who was so unorganized. It was impossible to get your grade in the class because he does not use canvas or have an accessible syllabus. The class is just for going over homework questions so if you aren't able to learn through a textbook than don't bother. Entirely taught through the book.
Do not recommend this professor. Exams account for 75% of your grade, and he assigns SO much homework. Classes are mainly him going over homework questions, he doesn't do a whole lot of actual teaching, so be prepared to teach yourself either through the textbook or YouTube. Also, he is a harsh grader. No room for error in his class.
Homework everyday, several test and pop quizzes that do not match the material he has taught, tends to go on rants and tell stories about his life for about 70% of each lecture. You have to teach yourself calculus from the book, he doesn't help in office hours too much either.
in my personal opinion, i think that Dean is getting respectfully slow for the jobs that hes preforming. Common, easy mistakes were made throughout the semester that totally couldve been avoided if he could pay attention. it was very common on tests, midterm, and final to see crucial mistakes, things that just make hard math classes even harder.
Simple concepts were explained in such a way that they were not approachable to solve problems. After watching the lectures it was extremely challenging to replicate his processes in integration. It was just a bad math course and I ended up having to later drop my 1C calc class because my base integration skills were so bad. Avoid.
This professors lecture consists of 80% of him rambling about personal problems, history or anything random. Other 20% is his lectures that contain an absurd amount of errors and mistakes. Assigns an absurd amount of homework. No technology so good luck trying to study if you miss class. Imo take Professor Kirby if you want a stellar teacher.
Gooch is a great professor who cares about his students, but he won't help you if you won't help yourself. He expects students to put in effort into his classes. He is one of the few professors that places an importance on rigor in math and I think that is the reason for a lot of negative reviews.
I found Math 10 to be very challenging, but you have to trust the process, and know that he'll make sure you have every opportunity to know the material before the test. I'm glad it's over, but I'd do it again too :)
This has got to be the worst teachers I've EVER had. I literally haven't learned a single thing from this class. 80% of class time is wasted going over old stuff instead of learning in an orderly, timely, and organized fashion. We have a book but we NEVER use it in class. So what are we wasting 2 hours for? I don't recommend this teacher to anyone.
Heavy and long lectures, heavy testing, and loads of homework. Testing back to back and a week close to the final. Flexible with HW and turning in late. He wanted us to ask questions if we need help, but I felt that he wasn't able to explain or answer our questions in depth if we did not understand. Office hours are not helpful, either.
30 lengthy assignments over the semester (~2/week). Exams were entirely based on the homework, so don't skip any. You can turn in late HW until the last day of class for 80%. Worth noting: Gooch had several days where he snapped at students. Borderline insulting them for their questions.
Good professor and person to talk to about mathematics, but his style isn't for everyone. He expects students to do a certain level of exploration on their own. Expect to give reasoning and show sufficient argument. Gives time to ask hw questions in class. Tells a lot of stories. Fair grader, ~25 hw's (worth 1 test). 4 Midterms and a final.
4 midterms and 1 cumulative final. Honestly, this class was chill just had a lot of homework. But, as long as you did it he gives you full credit (doesn't check for correctness trust). Exams are straightforward, he doesn't try to trick you. He gives practice quizzes that are like the exam, so your prepared. No canvas, everything done in-person.
He talked history more than half the semesters worth of time. There isn't much real instruction because he assigns homework, asks questions regarding it, and then tries to solve the problems on his own without attempting to demonstrate his methods. No canvas, no online resources, no way to check your grade, ask about what homework due, he says IDK?
Okay teacher. Would go off on tangents often. Was replaced halfway through the semester to get surgery.
Horrible professor, extremely disorganized and rude at times. He doesn't use canvas or any online tools because he believes the government spies on people?! he lectures as if we already know everything. He also goes on 20-30 minute history tangents. Thankfully he left halfway through, and we got an amazing sub, John Martin. DO NOT TAKE GOOCH.
Mr. Gooch know what he is talking about, but can go off on tangents every once in a while. Overall fair teacher if you put in the work, just need to study a good amount on your own outside of class.
Gooch is disorganized and drones. He doesn't use Canvas; he barely communicates through email. Periodically, he'll project grades in class. Homework is written on the board; if you miss class, you don't get the assignments. His teaching involves example problems on the whiteboard with mess-ups. He goes on irrelevant tangents about math history.
extremely unorganized, never gave due-dates, rambles a lot, misses much of the text because of his rambling so u essentially just learn from the textbook. the assessments seemed fairly reasonable but he doesn't teach only rambles missing much
The worst. No preplanned lectures, horribly disorganized and messes up his example problems regularly. Has simple tests but each problem is 10% of the test and he'll be picky and give half credit even if you got it right. He doesn't plan out lectures so you have large gaps. He claims to only communicate through email but he doesn't even do that.
