His direction, enthusiasm, motivation & charisma are reason enough to attend UVa

A teacher that actually keeps things interesting. Grades generously too.
I love him!
Looks like the Beastie Boys in the video for "Sabotage." Like he's wearing a disguise. Unbelievable teacher. Taught me to see the world in terms of chemistry.
Super hot in a Tom Selleck kind of way!
I never understand why anyone would take Chem 141 and not have Harman. He is able to make the most difficult topics perfectly clear, and is by far my favorite teacher (and I am taking Econ with Elzinga).
His teaching is super-duper. Makes excruciatingly hard things suddenly appear easy. Looks like Gene Weingarten...the mustache is a plus.
Prof. Harman is the best professor I have ever had.
Harman is a great professor. Definetely the best I've ever had, although I haven't had many yet. I would recommend his class to anyone, even if you just have a passing interest in chemistry (like me). He explains it so well you can't help but love it.
One of the best proffs I've had in my life. He comes across as very interested in your sucess in his class and he definitely makes you feel comfortable asking questions. I highly recommend him, if you are willing to work hard. 80's series is difficult
Smokin.
best teacher ever
Harman is money!
awesome teacher, awesome class
This was the best class I took this semester. He is an amazing man that actually wants to teach, something hard to find at a research-based institution. There is no point in taking the 40s series if you can have a class with Harman. Also, its almost impossible to get lower than a C.

I LOVE HARMAN! he is an AMAZING professor, and he actually takes time out of his VERY busy schedule to hold review sessions- in addition to his office hours! most professors just leave it to the TA's, but harman actually holds the review sessions! & if u need extra help, he's in thinkwell!!!
You don't know what a blessing this guy is until you have McGarvey. Harman's very clear, very helpful, and thoroughly cares about his students.
Gives as much help as possible for tests, interacts with class during lecture and makes sure as many people understand as possible GO THINKWELL!

He is an amazing teacher! I didn't have a good background at all in chem before i came and i haven't had much trouble in his class. Don't mistake good for easy though. His test are challenging and require studying but he makes the material much easier to understand.
He is amazing. Before his class I was afraid of chemistry, and now I love it! If you need to take chemistry, take it from him.
Imagine witnessing the full brilliance of one thousand simultaneously exploding supernovas. Dean Harman is that spectacle in the form of a jolly, mustachioed man. He will make you see the world for the first time.
OMG, Professor Harman is absolutely wonderful! He wants nothing more than for everyone to get a 100% on each and every test, and does everything within his power to get you there. And he's funny. And clear. And concise. HARMAN ROCKS!!
Excellent teacher! By far the best lecturer I've ever had. Clear, concise, funny, and interesting. Cares about students, nice person as well as awesome teacher. Other teachers guest taught our class, so trust me, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, TAKE HARMEN!!!!
Harman is a good teacher. A bit too easy though. You can study the night before the exam or do homeworks the night before, and still earn an A. Great teacher, nice guy, but not much of a challenge.
Harman's specialty is clarity: he uses examples to make sure everyone is on the same page all the time. The class is pretty easy, and it's also fun: he'll do experiments or tell a joke or a story just to entertain. Definitely a great teacher.
Phenomenal professor. Very clear. Given the other options, Harman is DEFINITELY your best bet!
Best chem professor i have ever had. He makes class fun and offers a lot of help. Take Harman
Harman IS a great guy, and tries to make lectures fun and interesting, but by no means was the class easy... quizzes do not always follow what you've learned in lecture.
his class was fun and he had great stories. quizes are tough, but they are the easiest of all the other chem teachers
TAKE HARMAN!!! You will absolutely love him! He makes Chemistry interesting and fun, even if you are just wanting to get through it. He explains everything with helpful examples in an exciting way (sometimes blowing things up). He was awesome! I only wish he taught CHEM142. You will not regret taking him!!
Harman makes chemistry really interesting. He relates material to stories, and he does experiments in class. He's also concerned most with concepts rather than the boring math part of chemistry. Definitely get a class with Harman if you can!!!
He is a fatherly and gifted teacher.
This man is the greatest teacher I've ever met.
Great professor. Quizzes are tough, but he does a lot to make sure that everyone understands the material. Will meet in office at almost anytime.
Very intelligent teacher, Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford. He also is a producer of the book's tutorial cds (thinkwell). A very funny and helpful teacher, he deserves 5/5 stars. Class is not easy as it is a weed-out class for premeds, but he's willing to help you as much as he can.
Harman is MONEY and he's sexy. Don't get anyone else. I thought the class was easy but lots of other people struggled and I already had credit from AP Chem. If you study, watch the thinkwell videos and pay attention you should do well.
He's so cute! You can tell he loves what he does and wants you to care also. He blows hydrogen balloons up in class and poors liquid nitrogen on the floor (my favorite)!! Take his class... I only wish he taught 142
hated chem. LOVED HARMAN. He was SOOOOOOO FABULOUS at office hours. I was struggling, went in for help, and got a B on the final (better than the C- i was used to) Anyways...he totally loves his job. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED
I loved this class. Despite his challenging tests and the heartache one caused me, I enjoyed every second of it. Lectures are never dull, and for the most part, he's easy to understand. The tests are definitely not easy, however. He LOVES conceptual, analytical questions, so you really have to know your material like the back of your hand. I wo
Although I got a C in his class, he is one of the best professors, pound for pound, that I have had at UVA. He explains concepts clearly, which is good, but can lull you into a false sense of security sometimes. Go to his office hours! His quizzes can catch you by surprise sometimes, but if you prepare & you're good at science it's not too bad.
UGH - chemistry at uva is ridiculous. It's not even right. Harman was alright - he knew what he was doing - but i still didn't learn much. Uva pretty much sucks. steer clear.
hardest class of my life. i cried after every quiz. chem is most def not my thing. harman is all about CONCEPTS. and everything is from effing thinkwell.
He explains things well. His voice is sooo nice sounding too so its hard to be mad when you get a bad grade.
Professor Harman is the best! He makes chemistry really interesting and he is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He really cares about his students. Chem itself is pretty hard, but he does his best to make it understandable for everyone.
Harman is a great professor that explains everything very clearly. He's approachable and is really helpful. Be sure to study and prepare for the quizzes because they can be challenging.
Harman is AMAZING and by far the best in the Chemistry department. Take his class if you have the chance!
Chemistry in itself isn't an easy subject, but his lectures are engaging and even funny sometimes; he is definitely the best lecturer for 141. His quizzes are hard and even tricky though, so its a give and take. Overall a really nice guy, and approachable
not so good
Great professor... take this class if you have to take chemistry.
If you have to take chem, definitely make sure you get Harman. The material is difficult but he provides a million different study tools for the students. Thinkwell is GOOD!
The class is difficult, but that comes with taking chem 181. Genuinely interested in teaching the subject, and will try his best to make sure you get a good grade. Grades with a fairly good curve. Nobody rocks the stache like Harman.
By far, the best professor i have ever had. If you have the chance and you like chemistry, DEFINITELY take this class. His lectures are very clear and he only tests you on what he's explained to you. He can answers any and all of your questions and no one leaves the lecture not understanding the material.
Prof. Harman is one of the best science teachers at UVA! He loves what he's teaching and after a semester, so will you. Tests are challenging but relevant and he tells you exactly what to study. Thinkwell is really helpful as well
Harman is the nicest professor I've ever met. If you ever go to office hours he makes a real effort to help you understand the material, and he takes even the most asinine questions sincerely. His tests are more conceptual than math based, so make sure to get that comprehension down.
Probably the best lecturer I've ever seen at UVA. He teaches the material such that any reasonably intelligent human could understand, and he's genuinely excited about the topic. He's generous with office hours, and if you stick with him as you go, there's really no way you can't do well. Harman's the way to go.
Absolutely wonderful teacher who is genuinely interested in the material. If you take this class, you might spend hours thinking about problem set questions but somehow they will never become boring or tedious. Get a study group! PS: This class along with 181L will definitely consume your life. The curve helps everyone; 40% of the class got an A!
Professor Harman was awesome. Quizzes and final were both lecture-based, so go to class! I learned a lot using the textbook and watching Thinkwell recreationally too. Take chemistry with Harman because he is always enthusiastic and makes the subject fun.
Due to popular belief, he is not ACTUALLY a DEAN(that's his name). Anyways, I prayed to not get Metcalf for CHEM and I got Harman. Harman is one of my favorite professors at UVA so far. He uses funny and useful annecdotes to help explain his topic. It is a very difficult class if you have not taken AP CHEM before.
Amazing teacher and his lectures are very interesting. I really reccomend chemistry with him.His lectures along with reading the book will get you the A. His quizes arent hard if you know the material. Most of the questions are direct.
Harman was awesome! I loved going to his class, even though I didn't do very well. He is very enthusiastic, and a fun lecturer. He doesn't have a lot of notes to copy down, which was both great and slightly unhelpful. His quizzes weren't too hard; Chemistry is.
HESSSSS AWESOMMMMEE! he's a really nice guy:-)
Harman is an awesome chemistry teacher; he really does everything he can to make difficult material understandable. Exams are challenging, but I'm not a chem person, and even with that Harman made it so much easier. Definitely take chem with him!
Lectures aren't strictly "mandatory", but might as well be. Harman can (and will) explain anything better than any textbook. I literally didn't open mine the whole semester. One of the most dedicated, knowledgeable and dare I say fun professors, especially for a high level class. If you make it to the end of the 80 series, a very welcome reward
Professor Harman is a very genuine professor who truly wants all of his students to succeed. He is the reason why I am so in love with chemistry. Even thought it is honors chem, he makes it all worth it.
Best chemistry professor in the whole university; will spend hours discussing research and advising students for which he has no obligation to do so (i.e. not his major advisees, etc.). His lectures are crystal clear -- he should write his own textbook.
Extremely difficult class, but extremely helpful&interesting teacher. Grading based on take home problem sets (group work), and hour-tests (solo). Great lecturer, covers all of material in class, available in office hours. Could not have done it without him. Grades curved, B+=average, b/c honors.
Extremely Helpful professor. The number of times I have not understood something he has explained can be counted on one hand. It was his birthday yesterday and we all sang him happy birthday.
Harman genuinely cares about every student doing well in the class. His lectures are so clear that you never have to read the textbook. I took good notes during lectures, went to office hours, and ended up with an A.
Best teacher ever!!!1
Incredibly helpful, probably THE best chem prof on the face of the earth!
This was a very hard class, and very competitive, but I would still take it again just because Harman was such a great professor. He is very clear in his lectures, so clear in fact that you don't even need the book. The tests are very hard, but if you put in a lot of time, you can expect an ok grade.
Fantastic! All grades are curved, so if you work hard, it is easy to get an A. I'm a science person, but didn't think I'd like chem and he made it one of my favorite classes. He is the best professor I have had at UVA!
One of the best teachers I have ever had! He really knows how to present a topic in a way that everyone will understand. Hard material, but phenomenal professor!
This class is by no means easy, but Harman is one of the best teachers out there. He has a deep understanding of the topic and his passion for it makes the class so much more interesting.
This class is VERY difficult. It is fast paced and the first month consists of learning that everything you ever knew about Chemistry was a lie; however, Harman is an amazing professor. He makes himself available and explains things as clearly as possible. This class was definitely worth it.
The class is hard, but the professor explains everything very clearly. He has made Chemistry fun. Definitely should take the class.
He's an excellent teacher. He's clear and is very willing to help you with anything you're struggling with. However, the class is really difficult. Although he's great, I would still recommend getting supplementary help. I used clutch prep and ended up with an A. But I really had to be dedicated.
This was the greatest class I have taken just because of the professor. It was definitely a tough class, but no problem with dedication. If you are choosing between the 800 series or the 400 series for chemistry, this class is a must, even if you choose to drop to the 400 series afterwards. Take this professor's class. You won't get another chance.
Professor Harman really does care about students, but you still need to work hard in the class. The best thing you can do for yourself is to ask questions and attend office hours if you are stuck. It is not an easy course, but If you put effort in, you will attain great results.
Prof. Harman is awesome. He devotes half of his lecture days to teaching & helping students afterwards. Expert in his field, really smart guy. Has high expectations, evidenced by the exam. The course is as challenging as it's said to be but also very rewarding. If you don't understand something (sometimes everything) it's your job to ASK QUESTIONS.
Harman is awesome! This class is not easy, and the tests definitely require studying, but you will come out of this with the best chemistry understanding in the world. He is such a clear lecturer and is totally invested in making sure everybody understands the concepts. He sends out plenty of practice tests and review sheets to help. Great class!
Harman is a fantastic teacher, especially since he rarely teaches other classes besides advanced intro chem, but this class is hard unless you want to major in chem. It's doable, but not for the lazy or faint of heart.
Greatest chem prof I've had here. HIs office hours were like a second lecture
Honestly, such a genuinely nice guy. His class is very difficult, but he is so caring about his students and his office hours are incredibly helpful. The tests are like nothing you've ever seen but he does allow for test corrections, so if you go to lectures and ask for help you'll probably do fine. Taking his class is definitely worth taking 1810.
Harman is amazing. Lectures were tough at 8 am, but always engaging and he cares so much about each student. Office hours are great. Exams are VERY challenging, but usually, a 65% will be an A/A- due to corrections/curve. This proves that he really wants students to attempt to apply what they learned on the exams. Work hard, you'll get an A.
Professor Harman is a fantastic person and teacher! Chem 1810 was as engaging as it could be online, and Harman worked hard to make it fun for first-years this fall. The class is not a walk in the park, but Harman is there to help out and you get corrections on the exams which is a lifesaver. 1230982/10 would recommend!
Professor Harman's class is largely graded on effort. Homework and test corrections are graded on completion which gives you an advantage in grading. However, his lectures and presentation of information are disorganized. I had credit for gen chem and took this as a refresher and I do not think it really prepares you for organic chemistry.
Online 1810 was still a great class! Professor Harman is super knowledgeable and his office hours were very very helpful. Difficult tests but prepares you well for future chem classes.
Very difficult with only 3 exams, but he does offer test corrections.
Harman is great! Class is hard and you better work hard, but if you're at all interested in chemistry, I highly recommend. He also curves the grades at the end, so it's not *that* bad at the end of the day.
You could never miss a day of Harman's lectures or you would be so hopelessly lost. However, if you put in the work, take notes, rewrite the notes like he says, you will be fine. Going to the discussion groups was helpful because a lot of what was there was also on the test in some way or another. I was a hard class. if you work you will be ok
NOTE FOR INCOMING FIRST YEARS This post is NOT for Professor Harman (he is good), rather I want to warn you before entering the course. Please check out the 1/5 rating for Professor Serbulea for additional information (I am on a character limit here). You should not take the 1800 sequence. The 1800 sequence community is very snobbish and elite. ...
Absolutely phenomenal, do not be scared to take this class, you will get a B+ if you just try. But if you care about GPA, beware of 1811 lab and Professor Sen Zhang
Prof Harman is hands down the nicest professor you'll have in college; he takes time to teach you, whether individually or in a group. If you did really well in AP or IB Chem, then this class isn't a bad idea. It's fast paced, but TAs or the professor will help you. Warning: test average 60-70%, but he offers corrections for half credit back.
Harman is a god among men.1810 is a very difficult class but the material is fascinating and Harman shows he cares about his students. 3 tests at 25% each, but you get half points back for corrections and he curves the grades at the end. Definitely one of the best professors I've had so far, and NO you don't need to take AP Chem to take this class.
Professor Harman is a great teacher, but the style may not be for everyone. Lectures are fascinating, but tend to be about the theory behind something rather than how to use it on an exam. You only go over how to do the questions as homework/with TAs in discussion, unless you go to office hours. However, if you work/study hard, you'll be rewarded.
Great professor who is passionate and wants to help you! Lectures are fairly interesting too for 8 ams! Key to doing well in this class is attending lectures AND consistently going to office hours.
I strongly recommend this for Engineering students who only need 1 semester of chemistry. 1810 was awesome, but I really would not want to take 1820 next semester. You will love Dean Harman and honestly it's hard not to get a B+ to an A in this class if you try. BEWARE of 1811 (Lab section). If you're in engineering take 1810 with 1411 lab.
Professor Harman is just awesome! He is freakishly knowledgable and a very gifted lecturer; the fact that I was fully awake and tuned in during the 8am lectures speaks volumes. His tests are very difficult and they get progressively harder, so maximize points on the first two exams because the final will be brutal. Curves are generous, though!
Professor Harman is the most gifted instructor I have met through all of my years in school. While the course content is admittedly extraordinarily difficult, his incredible teaching ability makes the class worth its rigor. He truly cares about his students and has a genuine love for teaching.
Chemistry at 8am might not be the preferred, prof. Harman is so passionate about chemistry. Although you might be very interested in chemistry, beware, it is an extremely difficult class for those with an advanced chemistry background (ap chem or the equivalent). So if you don't have that chemistry background, you're up for a challenge.
This class almost made me want to become a chemist.
Harman has influenced me to a degree where I aspire to be as excited to talk about a topic as he talks about chemistry. He speaks with such enthusiasm for the topic and inspired me to major in chemistry. If you are invested in chemistry and want to have a great time learning it with an easy-to-approach and reasonable professor, take his classes.
Amazing class. I have no interest in majoring in chem (am premed) but this has me leaning heavily toward a minor or taking more intricate classes. As an engineering major, I am also very happy i decided for the 1411 lab with this, I've heard brutal things.
My favorite class I've ever taken. Material is very tough but Harman provides plenty of resources and generous ways to get points back on tests with corrections for 1/2 points back. Office hours are very useful and accessible (save time right after lecture to go). Beware of lab 1811!! It is very difficult and tedious, take 1411 lab w/ 1810 lecture
Dare I say overrated. Look, he's a polite man. Yes, his office hours are extremely helpful. Unless you have another class at that time. In that case, you'll miss critical information. Did I mention there's no powerpoint, so if you don't write your notes fast enough, the information might as well be gone with the wind. [80s series still worth it].
Professor Harman's chemistry class is challenging but rewarding. His infectious enthusiasm makes the lectures lively and engaging, even at 8am. Attend class, use Unstuckstudy, and you'll excel.
I loved Harman. I had him for 1810 and it was the best chemistry class I've ever taken. The content was difficult and some of it he didn't have time to cover in class, so we had to do it outside of class. Other than that, there was no homework outside of class. The class is heavily curved, I ended with around a 70 on all exams and ended with an A!
