oh dean, what can i say. read the book and ur fine...aced the tests...listen to the lectures? ur screwed! stutters and "umm's" the entire time, cant lecture at all
Useless. Extremely nervous, and tends to constantly repeat the same point incorrectly or unclearly. Read the book and you're fine. The tests are relatively simple, but it's sometimes hard to figure out what exactly he's asking for. So overall...if you value your sanity, stay as far away as humanly possible.
makes exams quite easy
I feel bad saying mean things about the guy because he tries so hard. Seems shy and nervous while teaching. I was so bored by him I stopepd attending class. He is the less interesting version of Forest Gump.
There's no point in going to his class. Read the book and you'll do fine (I have 110% going into the final) He's a nice guy, so despite his shortcomings, you can't really hate the man. I'm probably the only one who finds him attractive as well.
Boooooooooooring. But he's a nice guy... he really tries to help out students who ask him for help, and I'm sure the class would be boring regardless of who teaches it.
He doesn't seem confident when he lectures. Although I appreciate that he was upfront by telling us that this course wasn't his specialty.
Very easy class, his tests were fair and he tried his best to help out when we had a question. I'm taking another of his classes this semester, and I enjoyed it more than the first. Given that it is his first year teaching, I think he will improve even more in the future.
he's pretty good
Dean... what a guy. You kind of just want to give him a hug and tell him it's going to be okay, he's so nervous. Read the book, don't go to class, you'll do fine
Good prof very committed to environment and very clear on the limits of metaphysics
A little awkward, but what a great guy. If you have any problems and go to his office he will bend over backwards to explain them. He is also cute in that nerdy guy kind of way.
He can seem a bit distracted at times, but he is really helpful if you talk to him after class or in his office. A great guy.
Most boring professor ive ever had. you are best off to attend if you need to catch up on studying for other classes or a quick nap. class content tends to be him reading from the text he is quite unfamiliar with. Easy class to take, but nothing is added by taking it with him.
The most interesting part of this class were the sweaters that his mother obviously knitted for him. Other than that take the book home, read it, you'll do fine. Just don't go to class he'll confuse you...he's never quite sure what he's talking about.
ewww.
Really helpful if you go to him for help. Classes are easier to understand if you read the book.
Pretty boring class...Prof means well but just confuses you more... knows what he is talking about but I think he gets nervous in front of classes and seems unsure of what he's trying to teach us... If you read the book, you can easily get a good mark
I have to give him some credit, he's trying his best to teach a course that is dull, and really boring, actually he's gotten a lot better at getting the point across the last few classes, maybe he's getting on a role
Great guy! Really smart, and helpful! If you idiots wouldn't talk through his class and acutally give him a chance... his points does get across.
so boring. i've never hated a class as much as i do now, read the book and do the questions and you'll be fine. he confused me more by his examples
hahaha who doesnt love dean! whoever put up that quote is my hero because thats the esssence of what i learned in his class. thank god for a textbook...as much as i complained about it while i was in the class..it was better than something really hard that u had to pay attention to every class..i miss you dean
Awesome prof!! Very fair, nervous but nice!
REASONING AND CRITICAL THINKING aww, dean's a cutie. kinda shy, a little nervous, but a very good professor. sometimes the material was pretty boring, but i think that's just the nature of the course.
Dean is awesome. Prof Lauer is helpful and very clear on what he expects. 1101 is maaaaad easy and if anything in the text is vague and confusing he will not use it so ppl talking nonsense can really only blame themselves for their obvious failure. Sure the class is boring, but no professor would ever make it interesting. Take the class with Dean!
Dean is such a good person. I mean, he's genuinely nice and it pisses me off when I see kids laughing or talking in his classes. He's a beginner professor, he's just getting his feet wet. He's a fantastic guy, and a great prof, and the only you'll come to the realization is if you shut up and pay attention to his lectures. He loves questions!
easy class....not so great a prof...he is just too sh too many ppl talk in his class and he cant tell them to be quiet.....prof knows his material but is just having a hard time getting it across...overall good class
easy class....not so great a prof...he is just too sh too many ppl talk in his class and he cant tell them to be quiet.....prof knows his material but is just having a hard time getting it across...overall good class
Great Prof!! I'm graduated but surprised that is still actually teaching in Ottawa. Dean is adorable! I find that the commments are a little harsh :( I do not find many accurate at all. Keep up the good work Dean!
He actually might be legally retarded. Seriously. Worst teacher I have EVER had, and I had Mr. Shanks! This guy misspelled MONDAY and GYM!!!!!
Amazing professor. My favorite course this term!
Very hard marker for the type of class.
Not very good. I've had him twice, he's so spacey you can't understand what he is doing!!!
I love Dean he's adorable! Really nervous, and it doesn't help that people laugh at him in class. Don't go if you're just going to make fun of him or talk. If you pay attention and ask questions, he's awesome. He fumbles a little, so read the book before class and you'll know exactly what's going on. Material and tests are super easy but boring.
very unorganized prof and impossible to follow the lectures
really nice but easily confused. Pretty much follows the textbook (which is very simple), if you read it this class will be no problem. Always lets class out early, and gives extra marks out because of mess ups on the midterms - which are very easy and very short. will almost always give extra marks on exams etc. if you talk to him.
Ugh, this guy is horrible! He mumbles, spaces out, and is extremely redundant. He often stops talking and kind of just...dies..yeah thats right dies...I don't know what else you could call it when someone spaces out for that long. Very confusing and very boring
He's a very nice guy. He really knows what he's talking about to the point where you are so confused and don't get what's going on. He needs to work on explaining things in simpler terms as well as staying on topic. His exams were very fair and the material isn't hard to understand. Read the book and do the exercises and you'll be fine!
Incredibly nice guy. You just want to hug him. He even let some people take their midterm early if they had to leave for Thanksgiving weekend. Only problem is he can't teach. Seems to get nervous and confused easily, and doesn't go over much of the material so the class is easy. Very submissive prof.. NICE... but not much presence =(
What a wonderful guy. Had him years ago. PHIL 1101 is a pretty easy course, but take it from Prof Lauer if you get the chance.
Prof. Lauer is very nice, very helpful, explains things really well. The classes are huge and that is not helpful.Take his class and ask questions.
he really does not know how to teach at all.. He is very soft spoken which makes it hard to concentrate in class. If you simply read the book and do the Questions you'll do fine..
Cannot teach to save his life. Incoherent, illogical even though he teaches logics. He appears very nervous in big classes, or groups. He goes on the defensive easily and attack, that is because he is nervous, so if you have a question to ask him, and him alone, otherwise his adrenaline levels goes up and he will attack you verbally. Scarey
You don't even have to attend his class because he teaches right out of the textbook. He is always nervous and jittery. He doesn't teach well and all we do during class is the exercises in the textbook. It is probably one of the most boring classes you will attend. If you have to take this course, hopefully you don't have him as a teacher.
Disagree with many of the comments here. Prof Lauer is a good guy and a solid professor.
Extremely smart teacher, does not do well in front of a class large or small. One on one, he probably answers questions well.
Brilliant philosopher, absolutely TERRIBLE teacher.. Hope you don't get him or odds are you will be turned off philosophy for the rest of your life.
Great teacher, patient, the subject matter is tricky but he makes everyone understand. take this class.
most reviews are accurate but don't let them discourage you from this prof. he did rely on the textbook but that meant it wasn't a disaster if i missed a class, he explains things to death, he outlines exact test material, iswilling to listen to you. you can tell he enjoys philosophy but he's not the best public speaker. i did like him as a person.
This guy was able to make sense of material that was boring to me. He was erally helpful when I went to his office for extra help. He is super helpful.
He's pretty interesting to listen to. He lets you go about an hour early every class if you have a late night class. He listens to what you say and tries to help explain it so you'll understand the material. He tells you exactly whats on exams so it's pretty easy. Even though the material is SUPER dry he's good. If you can take his class!
A class on Friday night is awful, but Dean make it interesting . The material is dry, he knows his stuff. Really nice teacher.
VERY boring class, although I feel like that was mostly because of the subject matter. The prof seemed kind of nervous. We didn't cover as much as what was covered by the other profs, and the two mid terms and exam were very easy (if you read the textbook). In fact, attendance in class is basically unnecessary if you read the textbook.
You really don't have to attend the class at all unless you're completely lost. ALWAYS go to the lectures before the midterms because he tells you everything that will be on it, so there really shouldn't be any surprises. Although he seems nervous he is really nice and will easily change your grade if you ask. Take it with him and no one else!!
Great prof! he is very interesting and covers the material well. His Reasoning and Critical thinking class content is very easy and you are guaranteed to pass if you pay attention to the book and practice the "exercise questions" in the back. His lectures are thought provoking although he often gets caught up in his own trains of thought..
Professor Lauer is really approachable unlike some prof's and a super nice guy. First class it's a good idea to give him a chance, rather than not take the teachings seriously like so many. If you do the readings, (not much), a good mark is definite.
seems a bit nervous when he gives lectures but he knows what he's talking about and he's actually really nice. relatively easy exams, attendance is not very necessary (if you read the textbook), very helpful and overall a good teacher.
very nice and approachable teacher! thumbs up
He's such a nice professor and he's actually quite funny. He teaches the material well and simplifies it very nicely. It's a good class to take as an elective!
Very nice and easy prof! I would definitely take another class with him!
He is the best prof! He's funny and interesting. Here's the thing. I didn't attend the classes and I got a 91% on the first exam. I studied the book hard because everything you need to know is in there! If you have a question he will answer! In class he talks about one subject FOREVER! 9/10
Apparently, you could never be wrong in this class.. He agrees with everything you say, honestly I could convince the man I'm a fish and he'll agree. All in all, one of the easiest professors out there and you should end up with nothing less than a A-
Terrible prof! Cannot teach to save his life! His lectures are extremely dry for bioethics. He barely knows what he's talking about. If you're debating between him or Apostalova, go with her! Atleast she knows what she's talking about, and is interesting. He never fails when it comes to putting people to sleep!
Had one course with him and was my highest mark so far at this University! Made everything crystal clear on what we needed to do for the tests and the final exam. There were readings which were absolutely necessary but still a doable work-load. Highly recommended professor!
Class is a bit confusing as he skips from topic to topic seemingly randomly. Notes are excellent, and they are put online to study from. Exams are direct and to the point. The worst part of this class was the mixture of health science and philosophy students - nobody was on the same page and some comments were super offensive.
Honestly, probably the worst prof I have had in university so far. That being said - he is extremely nice (seems to care) and EXTREMELY FAIR. The TAs did not mark evenly for all three midterms and if you go to him he will read over your answers and change your grade accordingly. Ended up learning a lot in this class, but msot was from the textbook.
BEST PROF EVER! If you attend every class and take notes you will be more than fine for every midterm and final. He's a slow speaker and sometimes loses his train of thought but he explains everything clearly and knows his stuff. I didn't have the textbook and pulled off an A+ in the course with him. Super sweet and an amazing prof!
It's an easy class but painfully boring. Although I adore ethics, I don't find this class very interesting. No discussion, ends class VERY early, always. Midterm is fair, super easy if you study at all. SO many videos. He doesn't really teach much. Either shows videos or summarizes the readings in class. Easy, dry, short.
Although Prof Lauer was a last minute replacement for the original prof in ethics. I enjoyed the class and his lectures. Kept it interesting with relevant movies and clips. If you are in Philosophy take his class its a big change of pace compared to other PHil classes.
Professor Dean is too proper. He's really down to earth and is easy going. Easy to follow what he's talking about.
He's a nice guy but philosophy is boring. He's doesn't get answers to question before classes so when we take up questions it takes a long time because he has to figure it out too. The upside classes end early and the exam was really easy if you studied.
OMG. This prof is so boring, don't take his class unless you want to rely on the textbook 100%. It's still an easy pass, but you actually put in the work to read the textbook and his notes online.
The poor guy got hit by a car riding his bike in late October, so I didn't have him for long. There's no way to teach this course in an interesting way. I skipped a lot of lectures because they were early and dull. He solves the problems the text doesn't give answers for, so that's helpful. Attending and reading the text are both pitifully boring.
Probably the most boring professor I have ever and will ever have. Not to say that he doesn't try but he just mumbles alot and even though philosophy is boring he could have been more engaging. Skipped a bunch of classes because as long as you understand and do exercises in the textbook you will do well. Take this course for easy marks.
Really enjoyed this teacher! Philosophy is dry but he sticks 100% to the text! Exams are easy if you use the text! & he explains things very thorough
As long as you do the text book work you should be fine. Try to attend the entire lecture because he usually goes through each exercise in the textbook.
He is the most boring professor I had first semester. Although he is friendly, he is so bloody boring that you deserve an A if you can remain awake. Do your readings for the class, and you can spend the normal class time at home. Only go if you do not understand something.
Great professor. His lectures were direct copies of the textbook, but his casual attitude towards the course make the lectures more than tolerable. He's also a pretty cool guy outside of class. Definitely recommend him.
Well the class itself is an easy A. He more or less just reads exactly whats on the slide or in his textbook but you can't blame him. Very nice teacher and easy marker but the class will put you to sleep. Go with him for a great mark.
Great prof
very helpful and kind teacher
Dean Laure is very helpful when you ask for extra help. He doesn't rush over things and answers questions well.
It's the course material, not really Lauer, that makes this class so boring. Lauer can be approachable at times, but my experience led me more to finding who our TAs are and consulting with them instead. If you read the textbook and understand the material and exercises, class isn't necessary other than to confirm test materials. No essays here.
This prof is one of a kind there are not really enough words in the English language to describe this prof. He is ridiculous, not very bright and don't you dare ask him a questions or to reiterate what he just said. You WILL get a different answer every time that will not make sense. In all honestly you can pass the class but only if you show up.
Can force marks out of him as long as you explain why your answer is right.
Great guy, but boring class. It's not his fault that content is really dry. I recommend you skip the class and read the chapters. Answers are at the back of the book and content is straight forward. Very clear about what is going to be on the exams and exams are really easy. Take the course if you're looking for an easy grade.
Easy to understand and the textbook really makes the exams easy.
He is so boring, I and don't think he ever knows what he is talking about however if you like philosophy it can be easy, I however don't like it so I didn't do very well, he's a nice person, but all you do is read the textbook and do examples he doesn't actually teach anything.
Good guy, not his fault that the content is so boring. He sometimes seems unsure with what he is teaching, which can be concerning. Uses really weird but funny examples when he talks about arguments.
Easy A class but going to his lectures can confuse you. he sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about.
He gets confused sometimes, and it's sure the answer to the questions in the book which is concerning, not confident with what he is teaching. Very boring. Straight forward stuff, exams are easy, he tells you what exactly will be on it. There are even examples from the book on the exam. Long and brutal to sit through but easy.
Dude literally got hit by a bus.
Really understanding and easy. All his midterms and exams are straight forward and simple. Everything is based off of the textbook. If you do the practice exercises at the end of each chapter, you're set.
Great prof!
Great person but boring and confusion lectures. You dont need too show up too class too pass, just read the chapters and youll pass for sure. His lectures are more confusing han the book itself.
I would rather talk to a bowling ball than attend this class. However, it's pretty easy, and not bad for a mandatory philosophy class. Just a little boring. The prof is nice though and will discuss questions with the class if anyone asks.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever seen. When he teaches, he always stumbles over his words and doesn't finish his sentences a lot of the time. His feed back on tests are awful and nope helpful in any way. He is a terrible teacher and I have not learned anything from him. He teaches right from his slides so I just learn on my own.
PHI 2396 is mandatory for Mechanical Biomedical Engineering. Multiple choice questions are awful! They make up a large portion of exams are are horribly written and misleading. Multiple answers are virtually identical, he is looking for the exact word used in a specific question in the text book. Avoid if possible, if not study the book.
I think it's the course that makes people hate this professor. The course itself is pretty dry, but the professor isn't that bad. He goes over the textbook questions which really helps when it comes to his quiz.
nice guy but sooo monotone. u can tell hes rly into wat he does tho. going to class isnt mandatory but its interesting to hear his POV on all the topics. there were 3 midterms & a final, & the final is take home which is so blessed. the textbook isnt mandatory either but its good for if u need elaboration. overall pretty easyinteresting course.
This man is so unclear and to be frank, he just needs public speaking classes all together. He is inconsistent in his expectations and pulls out the SMALLEST things from the textbook that was like 150$. Be careful in studying for this class, because the TAs are tough markers regardless of how straightforward the test questions may seem.
Very clear and interesting. Makes moral reasoning easy to understand. Great prof would take again for sure!
Lectures are pretty dry, but at least he does more than just read off his slides. He can answer questions regarding the material. MC on the midterms and final were tricky, read them carefully. No assignments, just midterms and a final. Study more than just his slides. If you don't attend class to take notes, then read the book.
Not a fair prof. Avoid.
He's terrible at lectures. In fact, I don't even know why I went to his class. He just read off the slides. Save yourself the pain and just teach the course to yourself using the textbook; you'll probably do just as fine.
Goes off on tangents, if you have energy to stay up and listen to others take up textbook questions then it's fine. His slides are on blackboard, and during class, he only elaborates a little bit on them. He's very nervous, but will answer questions if needed.
Imagine a goofy dad giving a lecture on something he's really passionate about, add triple denim and you've got Dean Lauer. Amazingly simple in what he wants, goes through example questions from the textbook that are nearly identical to the exam questions, purposely gives easy midterms... 11/10 would definitely take again live by the textbook
Enjoyed the course
An extremely nice man who cares a lot about what he teaches. He isn't the best at lectures but his midterms are really easy, they are more like quizzes. I highly recommend him if you are looking for an easy mark. You can just teach yourself from his slides (which are straight from the text) and you will definitely do well!
Let's avoid a case of the 'Hasty Gs' and think about this properly. This class might seem boring and 'dry', to quote the professor, but is very relaxed and easy. The prof is a really nice guy and witty and his power points are fantastic. Mid-terms are easy, all you need to know comes from the power points, but reading the textbook helps massively.
Funny guy. Makes great power points that include exactly what is on the mid terms. Lectures are kind of boring but not mandatory whatsoever. The book(Socrates) helps out a lot. Tests are very easy!
It was the easiest class I had all semester and I loved Dean Lauer he was hilarious. Study for a couple hours and you're good for an A. The lectures are reading off the slides but you dont have to go as long as you study.
Loved him so much! The final was open book and the midterms were straight from the textbook. Nothing more you could ask for in a prof!
I found the lectures very boring and I thought they were dragged on a little much, but it is a very easy course. There were only three very short tests and an exam. He is a very nice guy and will answer any questions, and often lectures finished early.
Definitely take bioethics with Dr. Lauer. His midterms are super fair and his final was non-cumulative and open book. He makes it so easy for you to succeed. Lectures are boring, but so worth it if you're looking to get an A+!
Prof is a real nice guy, but lectures are dry and slides are often unclear (the textbook is often clearer). Course material was amazingly boring, but that's just my personal opinion. On the plus side, I appreciate that the prof always recaps the content of upcoming exams. And most of all, I REALLY appreciate that the courseload is super light! :)
This class was EASY -- hello open book exam! I felt that Dean was very fair and clear about what was going to be on exams. However... MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS, even though it's boring and he loses his train of thought often. He elaborates a lot on his slides, and you won't be able to email classmates b/c he blocks it on Blackboard.
Great teacher, patient and knowledgeable. The class itself is very easy, but I would encourage students who take this class to read the textbook, as it completes the lectures. That said, attend the lectures, that is key!
In class he read directly off the slides with the information coming directly from the assigned readings. Midterms were easy but marked very unfairly and the final was impossible to prepare for. The material for the final was not discussed in class or a big part of the readings.
Prof is a nice guy. The course was MIND-NUMBINGLY BORING, but it was also quite easy, which is a godsend when you have a bunch of tough courses like I did! (Prof. Lauer's course saved my GPA!)
For choice between PHI and HIS for engineering, im really glad i took PHI. Tests are straight out of the notes. Very boring lectures, but the testing/grading method is well worth it.
Really nice and humble prof. Always available to answer questions in and out of class. The lectures can drone on and are difficult to concentrate on because he tends to ramble sometimes, but the course isn't a particularly hard one. Exams are fair, and reflect well on what was covered in class.
Nice guy, boring prof. Material relatively straightforward, rarely went to class
AMAZING PROF!! YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
If you take bioethics, take it with this prof! he knew the students in the class come form different backgrounds and made bioethics simple and interesting! 3 quizzes and a final exam all were fair and straight from his slides (MCQs and short)
The easiest class I have taken so far. His lectures are not the most entertaining to say the least but he is extremely clear what he wants from you on the midterms. The final and his midterms were very fair, zero tricks to them. Just read the textbook in accordance to his notes and you're guaranteed an A+. Attendance is not a must either.
He took time right before each test to remind us what he's looking for. He even explained rationalism vs. empiricism during the final exam! He is not trying to trick you but you do need to know key points and be able to articulate them well on an exam. That's it - do that and you'll do well. Super nice guy. Lecture interest depended on the topic.
Professor Lauer is super nice and his class was really easy to pass with an A. His lectures can drag on and he tends to be a bit boring but overall, it was a great summer class to take! We did two tests and an open book final exam. Would encourage you to take his class for an easy pass.
BEST PROF NO DOUBT
This course with Dean is an easy A+. 3 quizzes and a final. His lectures are useless, just make sure to read the book for the overlapping material found in his slides (which are super short only 12 slides max) and you're gold. Be sure to study small details from his slides, his mtq can be a little specific. 20 MCQ and 3 short answers on quizzes
No need to go to class. All his lecture slides are copied word for word from the textbook. If you want an easy A, take this class. If you want to actually learn useful stuff, don't. He reads off the board and doesn't know the material well. He has 3 tests and a final. Short answers are easy but MCQ are tough and specific. Beware of minor details.
As long as you study for this class and put in some effort, you will do well. The lectures are very boring and dry. Read the textbook information that over laps with the slides and you will be fine.
Everything you'll need to pass his tests are in his slides, and his slides are very specific which i loved. You will NEED the textbook, but really just to understand his slides. His tests are not hard at all + the course is very interesting. I would recommend him. Just read his slides and textbook, his classes are boring, don't bother going.
4th year student: have taken many courses with many different profs. This guy is so soft spoken and kind. Knowledgeable and would definitely recommend this professor.
Likeable guy, and lectures were interesting enough that I didn't even resent hauling myself out of bed for an 8:30 class, and I hate mornings. He responded to my email within a couple of hours. Tests are very fair. No surprises, and if you've gone through at the least the Powerpoints, you should find the tests straightforward and quick to complete.
Absolutely amazing professor, extremely kind and genuine. He is very clear with expectations towards midterms. Study his slides a day of two before, and that'll be enough to do well. Easily one of my favourite profs in my four years of uni.
there are 3 midterms theyll be easy if you memorize the slides, the final was open book, he talks a very long time about random stuff sometimes other than that classes are usually cut short.
Currently taking business ethics w/ Dean. He's great. Super nice guy, great class discussions, easy and fair 3 quiz/midterms worth 20% each. Just show up to class, take basic notes and get A+. Would definitely recommend. Awesome lectures. Very accessible outside of class.
Best prof I've ever had, he's a really nice guy and makes the class interesting, no textbook, study the powerpoints and get an A.
Extremely easy class for being a second-year course. Just review the powerpoints for each quiz and you're set. I haven't done any readings and have an A in the class.
Dean is such a great prof and is super friendly. He is really helpful in his office hours and the coursework is not much at all. If you go over the powerpoints properly you should get an A in that class. No surprises at all on the final or midterms.
Dean's classes are quite boring and he spends a whole class on just a 10 page slideshow. However, he has 3 midterms which are super easy as long as you read his slides (and maybe a bit of the textbook). His final was open book/notes and very easy. I just printed off my notes and didn't even study for it.
Dean is such a gem <3 His lectures were pretty dry, but EVERYTHING that you need to know is in the slides and textbook (which provides a bit more detail on slide topics). Exams were 100% fair, and the workload for this class was WAY less than what I'm used to so it's so chill :) He's the sweetest person ever and actually cares about his students :)
Great prof, conveys lecture information effectively. Quizzes are pretty easy and the final was open book (bc it was online), and that was easy as well. If you have to take this course, take it with Dean! He's great.
If you need PHI2396, definitely take it with him. His lecture slides are helpful but you don't need to attend class. He even made the final open book!! Would recommend him.
The lectures are pretty boring because he takes up the entire time describing something that could be explained in 30 minutes. His lectures are always less than 10 slides. He explains the material well and gives good examples. The course was 3 quizzes each worth 20 percent and a final. They were pretty easy and he made the final open book.
Genuinely the sweetest prof at uOttawa. His lectures are 10-12 slides per class, all you gotta do is show up. Three "quizzes" of 20% and a 40% final with clear expectations. Would definitely take a class with him again.
Prof. Lauer is an excellent professor! He is very caring and takes the time to explain the concepts taught. His midterms have been very fair, and he let us know what we should expect from them ahead of time, and it was very accurate. I also do appreciate that he gave us more than adequate time for the midterm. I highly, highly recommend him!
He is a great lecturer and he is very understanding. Out of all of the online classes, I've had, and he was the only professor that was able to make the class enjoyable and easy to understand and study in. You can tell he cares about his students learning and he does not make any trick questions. I highly recommend taking his classes.
Make sure you watch lectures to understand what he's saying because his slides don't give you all the info but the 3 quizzes in his course are very simple.
Great prof! Replies fast to emails and is caring. Only 3 tests (multiple choice and three short answer) and a final. Lectures are easy to follow but you might need to remind him to post the slides! Overall a nice guy who wants you to pass. Highly recommend you take him!
As much as I don't like philosophy and hate the idea that I was forced to take this class by the university, I found his lectures quite interesting. He not only talked about our readings, but also how they applied to real life and he connected them with stories which incited discussion. I ended up loving the course and found him to be a great prof.
Really great prof! Super nice and caring about his students, his lectures are really interesting and even though there is a quiz every 2 weeks, it is actually pretty simple. Made me like philosophy!
He's a good prof, you'll do just fine with him. Really would consider the class I too with him a bird course and he did well conveying the content and was personable.
Professor Lauer was by far the most caring and fair professor I had during my first semester of university. His quizzes and assignments were very clear, and closely reflected the material covered in class. He genuinely cared about his students, which was much appreciated cause I didnt see much of that this semester. Highly recommend!
Prof. Lauer is one of the top professor I have had at the University of Ottawa. The PHI2397 online course were clear and simple. He a very understanding person and his grading criteria are not too hard to achieve. Would definitely recommend!
An absolute gem- never fails to brighten up my day with witty remarks. It's obvious he's very passionate and well informed about the material he teaches.
Prof. Lauer is very kind and respectful, and he was very understanding when I needed an extension during a move. I liked that he worked through exercises with us during the lectures - it helped the content sink in even if it used up some time. His approach to the content was a little disorganized, but otherwise he was great.
Absolute beauty, take this prof and get an A+. Dean Lauer is a super nice guy and his rating should be a 5/5.
As a Finance student, this course was a PAIN. But Lauer is a good prof and explains concepts well. The TA's grade the quizzes and tend to go a little harsh, but overall his classes are good. Good prof, great man.
Love this prof, take him if you have a chance. He is very funny and nice. His marking criteria is very clear and you just need to take notes!!!
I attended his first few live lectures but couldnt concentrate well with his slow pace so I decided to watch the recorded ones at 1.5x speed (worked pretty well). His ppts were all less than 10 slides but can be quite confusing so I had to read the textbook to understand concepts better. His tests were all non-cumulative (bless his soul)
Professor Lauer is on of my favourite professors ever!! His lectures are very interesting, you can tell that he wants his students to succeed and cares about their general wellbeing. His tests are very fair, make sure to take notes and use the textbook! Amazing prof I really hope I can take another class with him.
Very good professor and very good questions on the tests that reflect content of lectures well. I enjoyed listening to his lectures and as someone who wants to be a doctor (like 90% of the class as well lol), the content is quite relevant and gets you to really think.
The textbook is helpful for multiple choice. His lectures are helpful for the short answer portions. He is a VERY VERY fair professor. The class touched on some intriguing bioethical issues.
Professor Lauer is an incredibly kind and caring professor whose lectures were very interesting and provided fascinating insight into the assigned readings. His lectures were clear, engaging, and very reflective of content found on tests. If you're looking for a wonderful, engaging professor, then I can't recommend him enough!
He's a super chill guy, I took a summer class with him and it was a breeze. As long as you go to the lectures and take good notes, you can get by with not reading the articles. Actually found him funny and entertaining.
Hes an ok professor - easy grades, as long as you organize and study the material and show up to class. He took an excessive amount of time to grade and return quizzes. He also launched into unrelated stories that made his lectures boring and convoluted at times. However, would recommend, hes empathetic and listens to students, respects them too.
One of the best. His ectures are very interesting. His explanations and commentary are great. You can do the readings but his lectures and slides are enough. Write notes about what he says and save his slides and you should be good for tests. Tests are open book and really easy. As a person, he is kind and caring. Such a sweetie.
Great prof, one of the best I've had in a while. His enthusiasm and clarity is great, and his explanations are solid. Thought this course would be a struggle, but it actually turned out to be pretty enjoyable. If you have some extra time the readings are also a nice way to take your mind off tough courses and understand some more in this one.
Professor Lauer is by far my favourite prof! I've now taken two classes with him. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well! He is also great at answering emails and accommodating if sick. Make sure to take notes of what he is saying, and you'll do amazing! I really hope he teaches more courses!
Professor Lauer is extremely fair and you can tell he loves the subject matter and genuinely wants you to understand it. His term tests are very straight forward with no surprises. Just take notes on what he says in class and you should be good. This is my second class with him and I look forward to any future classes taught by him.
Such a charming guy. No homework, no essay. Only three easy quizzes (20% each) and a final (40%). Best prof since uni.
Very nice prof and has the fairest exams you'll ever see. I enjoyed his course alot and learned alot of things without being pressured whatsoever. Would recommend 100%
Im in my third year and I decided to take a philosophy class just for fun. Dean Lauer really showed his passion for philosophy as well as for teaching. It is very obvious he cares a lot about his students. The quizzes are fair, and if you do the reading and watch the lectures you'll certainly do well in class.
Prof Dean was super engaging in class and always available by email with quick responses. We had three quizzes during the semester so the weight of the final exam wasn't as heavy which was nice. Would definitely recommend to any student taking PHI 2397 to consider Prof Dean!
TWO WORDS --> AMAZING PROFESSOR
To start, the class material itself was very engaging but the Prof did a really good job in summarizing the material and explaining it. Very knowledgable and kind-hearted. The exams were very fair and anyone who suggests otherwise did not study.
Great professor, very easy to understand, and great textbook
He cares about his students, all his online exams were open book and gave us plenty of time
Excellent teacher if all the teachers were the average of the students would be very high. His course is easy to assimilate and his exams are great. I recommend him.
I dropped his class after the second class due to too many classes, but he is honestly a very kind prof who does his best to try and make a boring class good and when I take this course again i hope I get him :)
professor is sweet caring man but sometimes goes on tangents that last so long. Sometimes he had no idea what the textbook even says and would go through outside examples which confused students.
This guy rocks lol. Had a 3 hour lecture 1x a week and he didn't get lazy at all ever, and delivered the content very well. You will do well on quizzes if you read the textbook chapters literally just a few times and try to understand it. He is very, very kind and caring if you reach out to him and tries his best to help you always.
Professor is a warm, kind person who wants students to succeed. The testing criteria: clear, straightforward, and simple. But the professor quite didn't understand the textbook and sometimes gave opposite answers to textbook, which often hinders students' learning. Other than that, he is really a nice professor who deserves 5.
He is a sweet heart... His tests were so straight forward and were pretty much a copy of the practice questions and the chapters of the textbook you read he summarizes them and explains them. I think he was good and nice. There is a good chance you will get a good mark since many students in his class got a high mark.
Although the prof sometimes talks astray, great guy, easy to understand, straightforward and easy quizzes, very light material. Id recommend if you are trying to lighten course load with an elective with this prof
This guy is so funny! Everything he said was so hilarious without him even trying and I love his Ohio accent LOL amazing prof.
this prof was great but he was a bit boring at times & tended to ramble off-topic (can't blame him it's a 3hr lecture) but he would let us leave early and i was trying for tests only hours before the class started and still got B+ or higher. everything was posted online so you didn't really have to go to class and the textbook is not that expensive
The sweetest professor I've encountered at uottawa so far. Great lectures that are engaging and the topics covered help initiate conversations with other students. Doesn't try to trick you on tests and is very accommodating when you reach out to him. If you need/want to take bioethics, take it with him!!
One of my favourite professors at uOttawa. His exams are very fair and he tells us exactly what's going to be tested. His lectures are very clear and it's very easy to follow along as he tends to repeat the important content so as long as you're paying attention, taking notes, and doing the exercises it's a guaranteed A+.
The class was easy, but he's a boring lecturer
He is so kind, 10/10 would recommend taking highs class if possible
Super easy course, material is really dry but he would acknowledge it in class and just spent most lectures going over textbook problems, which reflected the test material. He's super kind and funny, did the best he could for a 3 hour lecture and you can tell he cares about students doing well in the course.
The lectures are fine but can get boring, and you have to listen to the students chime in all the time cause they like to hear themselves speak. Exams were easy enough
Professor Lauer is a great prof who cares about the success of his students. If you attend his classes the exams are super easy, even if you didn't pay full attention constantly. The only con during summer course is his "breaks" were watching videos where we still needed to take notes on for the exams, which meant 3 straight hours of content.
He cares for his students and is very clear about his grading criteria. the course if fairly easy if you read the textbook you will do very well.
Very kind and considerate prof. Extremely understanding. The class is quite interesting and interactive. The quizzes are well made and clear. Great guy.
I really enjoyed this course! Our quizzes were online and open book which made it really easy to succeed. Would definitely recommend!
Absolutely amazing, Truly has a passion for the topics being taught. Very clear with topics and offers personal and world view insights. 100% recommend taking one of his classes
Absolutely incredible. Best course and prof ever. Highly recommend. Thought provoking. Reading not necessary. Just watch/attend lectures and it is an easy A+.
10/10 prof
Midterms and exams were straightforward and were done on Brightspace. Conveniently, all the lectures were streamed via Zoom and then uploaded to Brightspace aswell. Two exams worth 25% then a final worth 50%, all open book and non cumulative. Great prof overall
Dr. Lauer is one of the best professors I ever had in uottawa. Very knowledgeable and understanding . Super interesting and interactive lectures. He cares about his students and their success. Also he answers to the emails so quickly.
I loved this prof! His tests were all super easy and although it isnt mandatory attending class is going to make this class super easy. He is very kind and spends as much time as needed on the topics if you dont understand.
Woefully underprepared for lectures, tendency to ramble on and go on confusing tangents. His answers would often be in opposition to the textbook. Pretty clear that he was just reading off slides someone else had prepared.
charismatic guy! showed up just for his personality.
Rambles, but his midterms are always clear and have the exact same format each time. Also zooms every lecture and saves them which is amazing.
Dr. Lauer is an absolute sweetheart (and also a bit of a rambler). The course had only 2 midterms and a final worth 50% of your grade but all assessments closely reflected what was covered in class and the marking was very fair. He is also very accessible and accommodating outside of class and truly works to support his students which is admirable.
Professor Lauer is unintentionally funny and very caring. You can attend class in person or on Zoom. PPTs are posted, but miss details said in class and in textbook, so taking good notes is essential. Lectures can be rewatched on Zoom. Exams are online, open book, and MC except for a few short answer questions. Great professor and great class!
Prof Dean is super cute, I like how his voice and lecture dont sound harsh or pressured. Course materials are very well explained, quizzes are easy. Strongly recommended
A saint! One of two profs that I've had in my 5 years that actually considered my reasoning of my answer and also provided me with valid feedback. I get it, lots of students fight for their marks with no support, but Lauer actually took the time to hear me out and increased my grade based on my reasoning.
Easily one of my favourite profs I've had so far. Lectures are engaging, and he's very respectful toward students. I've taken two classes with him now, and they both relied on open-book, online quizzes which accurately reflected course content. There are quite a few readings, but he does a good job of explaining them in class. Highly recommend!
easy but monotone
Dr. Lauer's class is interesting and engaging. The lectures are worth attending, and Unstuck study ai proved helpful for prepping for exams. While the discussions can drag on at times, the material is manageable if you stay on top of it.
A fantastic and charismatic man! He really is engaging. He's also a great neighbor, and a super chill dude I discovered.
EASY A. he's very nice and everything was online.
Prof. Lauer is a really good Philosophy prof. Lectures are recorded and posted if you miss class, but going in person is recommended. BUY the textbook! It's not super expensive and the practice questions serve as study guides (3 quizzes,1 exam). The course is dry but he explains it well and does questions together on the board. Highly Recommend!
Take as many courses with Professor Lauer as you can.
Only had 2 midterms and 1 final which had me worried. They're all online: MCQ and short answers. Records lectures cuz it was a 7-10pm and didn't want commuters out that late. Love this guy and the content was rly interesting. Might ramble and go off topic but idc he's awesome.
Took this class as an elective and honestly enjoyed the class more than I thought. The content itself was interesting and his lectures weren't boring. Very sweet prof that understands there's lots of info so he made the exams open book. Recorded the lectures which was great.
Made lectures interesting and always had something more to say, didn't just read off of slides. Made lectures entertaining with his witty humour.
Best Prof ever
Take this class if you want a good grade
Such a good prof! We only had 2 midterms (25% each) and a final exam, but all of them were SO easy - open-book, based on lecture/textbook. Mostly multiple choice with some short answer questions that were easy. He genuinely loves to see students succeed and would say that he was glad our class average was high and would try and keep it that way.
Intuitive, thoughtful, excellently structured lectures + slides! uses applicable, helpful examples/metaphors to enhance learning. Super humble and kind, engages with student questions thoughtfully and asks for our feedback on how to improve lectures. Knowledgeable and clearly cares about the content, which makes it engaging and fun :)
just love this guy. so kind and accommodating. took this during the summer and worked full time, he says class participation isn't mandatory and midterms/final were online and open book. they were straightforward and no surprises. He really emphasizes understanding over memorizing. I appreciated his compassion so much. NEVER CHANGE DEAN WE LOVE YOU
My favourite philosophy professor, he's wonderful.
