very great teacher, funny in an odd way... i'd really suggest taking him
Average instrustor who thinks he's way above average. Funny, though. Good lecturer.
Quite possibly the best teacher at CBC. Made the material interesting, which is rather difficult for Econ. I still remember it a year afterwards.
Great professor, very knowledgable and wants you to succeed. also has some random odd humor.
His teaching style makes his class easy for students who can understand the concepts easily.

I had his class in the summer online. I wish i hadnt taken it online. I got the worst grade I have ever gotten at CBC. If I had him in class it may have been different though....
i love his teaching style. he's easy to understand and will answer your questions. grades fast, be nice to him and he will give extra credit. he's a fun teacher. if you had to take an econ class, take it from schau
As the other comments say... he has a very random, odd humor. but he makes the material interesting and gives good examples for difficult concepts. he is not the most helpful professor tho, but i think this is mostly because he is very busy, your best chance of receiving help is online. overall, he's a pretty good instructor
The instructor was lazy, unwilling to make contact in a online class where communicating with the instructor through e-mails was essential. I passed with a good grade, but was very dissapointed with instructors effort. The class was self taught.
I took the online class and all he did was hand us the textbook. We were to read and take three tests. There were absolutely no input from him.
Mr. Schau is an excellent professor. The 2nd best I've had at this school. Hmmm.., I felt that this class was pretty easy, he explains concepts very well and entertains at the same time to keep your attention. Just pay attention and you should do fine. Def. take his class in person if u need economics.
He can go off on tangents but he knows his subject well. Read the book for tests.
Great teacher as a person funny and he is caring, but he can be boring but its an economics class he has alot of stories and gets off topics which is good he teachers material very well, here is how to get a 4.0 show up everyday.Study book quizzes and look on WEBCT always.DO all homework.laugh at his jokes till he knows your name.<remember this
I took 201 and 202 online. The class is pretty easy, but you have to do the reading, workbook problems and self tests to study for tests. As far as the teacher, nice once in while, othewise a complete display of arrogance, not very useful as he sometimes does not reply to emails. Class was okay online, but I think it would be horrible in person.
I feel that Dean is a very good economist, however when it came to actually teaching he did not do a very good job. The attitude he portrayed to the class was that teaching was his side job, and he didn't want to be there...
Fun Class
Just don't ask questions...get with a study group.
Took the class online. If you do the reading and study its not that big of a deal. Also, if you put effort into the assignments, you get extra credit. That helped with the grade!
Took him for Econ 201 and 202. Funny, arrogant guy. Likes to talk about eating, his honda that gets way better gas mileage than his truck and his yacht on the west side. Class was not too bad to be in, I would recommend him.
Hate this fool, was not helpfull at all he would just go on and on and on about how his shoulder hurts not because it got him through school.
As someone very interested in economics I was excited for this class. The problem with Schau is he flipflops on differn economic philosphies. In turn this confuses a lot of students. If you don't have the ability to spot fallacies in economic ideas he'll be hard to take and follow. Also he tends to suggest really flawed ways of "fixing" economies.
I took his Econ 101 and 201 in 1998 an 1999 and recently needed his help for the job I currently have and he's just as good as he ever was! Students ASK HIM QUESTIONS
Took Macroecon with him.Opinionated but knowledgeable guy.Likes Economics and History.Likes to talk too.Very nice though one-on-one.1Listen to his lectures! 2.Study the book! 3.Do the chapter quizzes!Good class overall.
I Dean's online class for Macroeconomics. His syllabus was unclear, and he hardly participated. He would write a post about football, then disappear for three weeks. We had two easy assignments and three online, multiple-choice test. However, even if we chose the word-for-word answer from the book, the answer was marked wrong. Easy, but pointless.
I had this microecon online. I don't know how his class is like with him teaching, but online he RARELY posted. He only sent out messages to tell you when tests were and if there was new homework. Tests were based pretty much on the chapters, so you just had to read them. It wasn't a all that hard, just keep up with the reading.
I took his online Macro Economics and it's a ok class. He offers EC so that helps out. You read about a chapter and a half a week which isn't bad considering that's about all you do and each chapters about 20 pages. There are 3 tests which are fairly difficult. He does have a tendency to disappear for weeks. If your self motivatd I'd recommend it.
Good class very helpful.
Unfortunately, Schau's lectures are pretty unorganized, frequently inappropriate, and attendance is mandatory, but if you go up to him after class he's really helpful.I made it out of his class with a 4.0 because I did study a lot with the book and he's also a fairly easy grader.
Snarky, only spoke about scotch and liquor, DO the homework which is considered extra credit, good luck!
This guy is a great teacher
This teachers is one of my favorites I've taken here at cbc. He gives homework, but not crazy amounts and is very quick at responding to emails. I highly do not reccomend taking onlines but this class was great. Im actually debating changing my major.
He was a great teacher, sure he talked about coats, and liquor. but he still taught his class. I would be very happy to take another class taught by Mr. S.
Great Prof!! Knows what he is talking about and enjoys talking economics with those who get it!! Overall, best Prof so far at CBC in my view!!
Took his online Econ 201 class and this was one of the worst online classes Ive ever taken. The entire 12 week course had 4 assignments (first 4-5 weeks) then nothing but tests for the rest of the quarter. He was essentially absent from the class all together. Almost nothing from the study guide appeared on the Exams. Terrible Teacher overall.
Good teacher! His class was usually pretty boring, but he really knows his stuff. Attendance isn't mandatory but you get points for showing up. I got 3 homework assignments all quarter, and I only really used the book for the chapter study questions before tests
Always interesting and lessons are full of facts. keeps his students interestic and on task
Do not take his online class, it is a waste of money. This professor barely assigns homework, he leaves the learning up to the student. He barely even tells you what chapters to read. If you want to learn economics, you are better off just going to a library and learning it there, because that is cheaper than taking this class.
Pretty nice teacher, although he does go off topic fairly often in class. Just make sure that you understand the chapters covered on the quizzes or tests, and you should have a pretty good grade. Attendance is 15% of your overall grade (1 pt per day)
I thought that his class was really easy. As long as you show up and read the material, you'll do fine. His tastes are basically the same as the self tests in the book. I liked him a lot, very engaging.
The course in its nature is tough. But Mr. Schau is a great instructor, a jokester. Take this class if you are an active learner. Speak up, ask questions, and don't forget to laugh. This guy is a hoot, and I highly recommend taking his courses.
If you have signed up for this class "Run". Communication is terrible. I understand he is a little better in class. I would try and take someone else. Test are very hard and his reviews do not help with the tests.
His class can get pretty boring and off topic but if you just study the book you'll be fine. I never listened to his lectures because they just confused me. Overall, its an easy class and there's a lot of extra credit you can do to raise your grade
Do not take Econ through Schau online! Biggest waste of money and time. There is no interaction between students and professor and when I was struggling with the class I sent multiple emails and not one was returned and I ended up dropping the class. Didn't learn anything!
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you receive VERY useful extra credit for your grade if you do attend. His class consists of mostly lecture but quizzes and tests are made up of answers found muchh of the time in the book. Reading the chapters WILL HELP. He is super funny and helpful. If you have questions go to his office and talk to him.
I hated his class...it was horrible. I went to talk to him during his business hours to have him help me and he didn't. Don't take this class
This class was rather difficult in thy he never had any of the questions from his exams in the book that he went over. He had 5 quizzes that were fairly easy and he dropped your 2 lowest scores. He had 3 major exams that were difficult in many areas and a few homework assignments that were considered extra credit! I feel like I learned nothing from this class and I barely managed to pass with a C. As long as you do the homework and are there everyday you should pass. He is a very funny teacher !
He is very confusing. He tells a lot of stories.
My biggest issue with this teacher is that he gives little amounts of assignments to help lift your grade. Normally this wouldn't be an issue. However, no assignments means no studying or practice. His exams cover brutal amounts of information so remembering it all is nearly impossible, especially with no practice. The teacher doesn't teaching.
do not take this class. his exams and quizzes are difficult being that he only gave 3 assignments in the beginning of the quarter, so there wasnt any practice or help to prepare. he repeats the same stuff and is not helpful at all. he just talks about his stories all hour. not worth it
Took this class online this past Winter 2015 quarter. There are 3 tests, 5 chapters of study to do for each test. Do the readings, and take notes, serioudly, do not slack off. He only assigned 4 homework assignments the whole quarter, so the grade in the class is basically all test points. Tests are 50 points, 50 questions, all multiple choice.
He is definitely not the best professor. Lectures are extremely boring. However, I'm planning on taking Micro with him in the future, just because I finally got to understand his method of testing. There are barely any assignments offered, no extra credit, but word to the wise: STUDY HIS POWERPOINTS AND YOU WILL PASS ALL HIS TESTS.
Dean is a funny guy, relates economics to real life and history. He's helpful if you engage and ask questions. Be present physically and mentally and you won't have a problem.
I do not recommend this class online, during the summer. This is basically a read the textbook, take one of the three exams class. I don't know if he's any better in person, but there was basically no interaction during the summer. However, Schau himself seems like a nice guy. He's very dry but funny.
I didn't pass this class... & as a running start student, it hurts. He gets off topic, a lot, & isn't clear what chapters he wants you to read. There are about 5 quizzes 50 questions long, your lowest score will get dropped. Then you have a couple major tests. YOU MUST STUDY & READ THE BOOK! I regret not withdrawing when I had the option.
Very few homework assignments ( 4), So the Exams ( 3) matter. Likes to chat and can get a little off base but if you ask for help he will make time for you.
I love his classes, took both of them macro and micro. If you are only going to take one of them I would say take macro; it is the basic understanding of the economy. Exams in his classes are literally word for word from his quiz's that he gives you. Read the chapters before the quiz's and exam's.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. he has no communication with his students whatsoever and does not help you one bit. only three homework assignments worth 10 pts each and three tests that are 60 mins with no time to answer all 50 questions. I've never failed a class besides his. I did not learn one thing so what a waste of 500 dollars.
Terrible teacher. Lectures are boring and completely off topic and not related to what's on the test at all. Homework also is not related to tests. Never goes over a syllabus, but does grade attendance.
Worst professor I've had at this college. Lectures are extremely long and boring. His tests do not relate to what he covers in class. He said his test was going to cover certain chapters but instead the test was covering totally completly different chapters.
You would think for an online class that there would be better explanations of material, nope. Tests were NOT easy. 50 questions is 60 min. . The what to study for he'd give truly never matched the test. Not too many assignment to help understand the content your reading. My advice is to read and reread each chapter to be as prepared as you can.
I found a quiz on Craigslist about him and his ECON that I took. I hope someone is doing something to get the schools attention! Worst instructor I've ever had. Doesn't care about students at all. Not accessible with short, unhelpful answers to questions. Sadly, this is the only instructor for online courses for this class.
I couldn't rate Dean Schau during class or a couple of years after his class. But after taking his class in 92 and watching society change and watch business expand and shrink to nothing, I can't help but think Dean told us what could happen if you are not aware of society and it's needs. I think you should listen to him, he knows his stuff...
I was so miserable the first week, that I dropped his class. His goal is about lecturing and do what he has to do, and NOT helping us to learn and understand. He speaks and goes through the lecture at lightning speed, writing on the chalkboard the whole time. Students had their hands up such a long time and finally gave up. Don't select him
Took online. Much information submitted by instructor was incorrect; didn't align with text book answers, makes learning difficult. Instructor doesn't feel accessible, though does keep office hours. Responses to email are short, not helpful. EASY grader of homework and gives extra credit. Only saving grace of this class.
Mr. Schau was kind to all of his students, there were several times where he would come up with some jokes. As far as course material, I think there were times where Mr. Schau could've went into a little more detail. All of class time went to either lectures or tests/quizzes. Some days the lectures would be fairly entertaining while some were not
Do not take his class. You only have two exams then a final and a couple of homework assignments. He gets off topic all the time and his lectures will confuse you.
HUGE exams that are a large portion of your grade in which he doesn't give nearly enough time to complete. Answers emails late with non-definitive answers. I cant believe this instructor is still teaching at CBC. Sadly, he is the ONLY option for working students who cannot make this class for the day classes offered. A+ student who received C.
My ratings may not seem to reflect my opinion. As an instructor, Mr. Schau is great. His Econ courses are extremely difficult if taken online. One must read and basically memorize the chapters to guarantee an A. Don't be afraid to go above and beyond on the few homework assignments there are. Mr. Schau rewards extra effort.
This class itself didn't seem difficult. It was purely the randomness of the tests that were difficult. You would get a study guide for the test and none of the information on the study guide was actually on the test. I studied by butt off and still did poorly on tests, and I am usually a great student and test taker.
He's a good teacher overall, very erratic in information on his lectures, they don't make a whole lot of sense, unless you read the whole chapter the night before, but hes quite funny and makes the subject worth learning. (everything on his Quizzes are in the exams. Word for word, and he gives the answers out after the quiz so if you fail its you.
Over all he is a very nice guy. Although, hes lectures are completely confusing, he gets out of topic on every lecture which makes it extremely difficult to understand anything at all. There are lots of note taking but his handwriting was horrible so it either you listen to what he is saying and write as fast as you can or you just don't do any.
I liked the Professor a lot but you are graded on three exams and have minimal homework. I needed more direction and guidance on what to review before the exam. He graded on a curve so I did better than I would otherwise, nice man always replied to questions. Just not my style of learning. If you are an independent learner you will do great here!
Took an online class. By the 3rd week I WITHDREW! I wish I could've read his reviews on here because I wouldn't have taken his class. He seems like a nice teacher but there were no guidelines for an online class. In summary, you pay $500 and buy a textbook just for someone to tell you to read so and so chapters because there will be a test.
He was awful, I hated having this professor. He is by far the worst professor I have had. He has things stated in his syllabus then he doesn't follow them online. Strictly examed based, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
If you have to take a microeconomics class, I would advise you to take another teacher. Or try even to take it in person, and not online. He had 4 homework assignments and then 3 tests all worth 50 points. There are powerpoints, but it is mostly up to the student to just read the chapters and take notes. He's also kind of condescending sometimes.
I took this online class during the summer and not happy about that since the professor was not helpful at all. You basically have to read the books and deeply understand the concept without any direction from the instructor. The first chapters were easy to understand but get harder at the end. Tests don't give you enough time to think but guess
I took the online ECON 201. The class is grades solely on tests, what few homework items are given are not mandatory, but help your grade if scored well. There is zero feedback on tests or assignments, no returned calls or emails when you ask for help. Basically, you read the book and take cumulative tests over 3-4 chapters. 60 mins for 50 ?s.
Professor Schau definitely wants his students to succeed. The online class is mostly reading the textbook, doing the few homework assignments (You can get extra credit for them.), and taking the tests. If you have any questions about the material or don't understand why you missed a test question, talk to Professor Schau. He's always happy to help.
Easily the most difficult class I've taken thus far. Zero guidelines, no quizzes, you are expected to read and understand the text and pass 3 exams to pass the class. If homework is posted, it's optional and only hurts your grade if you do poorly... but again, difficult to learn simply from reading.
Worst Online class I've ever taken it's so difficult and I Hate how we just have to take notes from either the power points or the book but honestly I don't even understand a single thing. I failed my first test already and he gives you 3 exams and you're just expected to do maybe like a few homework then the TEST.
Honestly such a great professor. Only one assignment a week , no assignments on the week of midterm and final. Very friendly and easy to get an A :)
Hes a really easy teacher to take if you guys are going to take online . He gives extra credit which is a bonus.
The class average for exams was 66.4%. Homework holds the same weight as exams and if you do your homework you receive at least full points and usually extra credit which is the equivalent of adding getting 110% on a test to the average- which would bring the mean up to an 88.2%. Really caring teacher who is easy to listen to.
Schau had almost no interaction with students over the course of this class. There were few resources to understand the material. The CANVAS page is disorganized and you are notified about quizzes maybe a few days before you take them. Because of this, I had no idea what to take notes and study for. The wording of the quizzes is confusing too.
There are ZERO lectures. You do get decks of slides but I need to read the material AND HEAR someone talk about it-I did not get that in this class. The verbiage changes from the book/slides to the questions on the tests and my beginner-covid-recovering brain could just not get through this. The more I read, the more my terms bled into one another.
Worst experience I have had with a professor. Absolutely no communication all quarter. Just read and takes tests.
