Mrs. Olles is amazing in the classroom! She knows the answers to every question any student asks in class. She is extremely smart and well versed in Mathematics, but can teach us at our level of thought. Her side notes/tangents are also great! She shows why AND how, which not many profs do. Take her class. You'll know more about math than ever.
Love her! Our class is not the most mature group of individuals, but she keeps everyone under control and working hard. Her workshops are really fun because she makes us think OUTSIDE the box of what we picture as math. Her exams are tough, but she gives review guides so we can practice before the test, so there's really NO excuse for a bad grade.
She ignores questions asked, doesn't stop to explain anything, and moves so quickly that the relevance of everything is unseen.
I would definitly take another class from her. During lectures we saw LOTS of examples. Workshops were interesting as she tried to get us to look at the subject matter from a different perspective, and helped the groups one on one. Exams were a direct reflection of the lectures and workshops. No complaints at all!! Take her class and you'll love he
I personally thought she was a great teacher, I'm dissapointed she doesn't teach more classes at RIT. Like the other poster noted, she can explain complex concepts so we the students can understand them, a handy ability. I also thought her exams her were a bit easy, so just study a little and look at the review sheets and you'll be fine. Take. I wo
She has inspired me to actually enjoy mathematics. I never disliked going to class, I actually looked forward to it. I think anyone who takes her class is lucky to have someone who loves math so much!
I have only been in her class for two weeks now, but having already attempted (and failed) this course, I feel as though I have a better understanding of the material. She answers all of my questions clearly and doesn't finish her answer until its obvious that I've understood. I am hoping the remainder of the course goes the same way!
Mrs Olles is a very good teacher. She makes sure that she gets her point across in more than one way and will break everything down for anyone who asks just so you can understand a problem better. She is very flexible with her office hours and there is no reason why you should be succussful in her class. If you do the work you will get the grade.
I am greatful to have such a patient professor for my very first Calculus class. She makes sure that we not only know how to solve problems, but we understand the concepts as well. She has taught most of us the importance of mathematics as a language. Her exams are not easy, but if you take advantage of her willingness to help, you'll do fine!
Cool teacher, grading is strict but fair. She will help you with ANY problem you are having. Is recommended that you stop by her office if you are having trouble. Good overall teacher.
not clear enough when explaining certain definitions and equations
She is very helpful. Tests are hard but fair, expect examples from class to be there. If you work you can get the A.
She is a winner, the best part is that she can be your teacher all the way thought the course sequence, get her if you can. Best math teacher I have ever had!!!!
She's really good
Professor Olles is my favorite teacher! Her exams are rough...but if you work hard consistantly throughout the quarter, you will have no excuse not to succeed in her class. She really values her role as teacher and treats us as adults not babies. Live up to her expectations and you'll enjoy her class. Who knew there were beautiful mathematicians???
Coming to RIT I expected having Calc with some old man who couldn't speak english and didn't care about his students. I really got a shock when I walked in to see Professor Olles, a mid to low 20's blonde girl right out of college with a masters in math and women's history. She is an amazing professor because she loves what she does, and wants to s
This professor really knows her stuff. I have tried on muliple occasions to stump and only succeeded once, and it was a brief victory because she came back in about 30 seconds with an answer!! Her notes and explanations are clear. She doesn't want you to limit yourself to solving problems, you need to understand the framework too. Very cool.
Great with her office hours. Can help you understand everything even if its something outside of the course's depth she will still go over it with you if thats what you need to succeed Thats how all Calc teachers should roll
Great professor, obviously very passionate about math and wants her students to appreciate math in all its aspects from its history to understaning the concepts. Make use of office hours with any question you have. Thoroughly enjoyed her class! I actually looked forward to going to class!
Great Professor!
I think this professor is great! She assigns A LOT of homework, which sucks, but it also forces you to practice the material and then you understand it more! Plus she goes over a lot of it in class. She answers quetsions clearly and makes sure we are all following her through lectures. Really, very good.
Excellent professor! Couldn't recommend her more. The homework load can be a bit much at times, but in doing it the class becomes easier, you learn A LOT, and you'll get that A for certain (not to mention surpass the other math classes). The class can be fast paced, but you'll be a week ahead of the other classes and will do better on the final.
This is the best math professor I have ever had. She is extremely thorough during lecture, answers questions, and very clear. She is very passionate about making sure we understand the material. You cannot pass her class unless you do, so she is very good at making sure we all understand so we pass. The only way to fail her class is to not show up.
I loved this class and I hated math before hand!
Very very good teacher. I would recommend her to anyone needing to take a math class. Even if you don't WANT to learn the material initially, she'll motivate you to care! I have learned more from her than all my other professors combined.
Professor Olles goes out of her way to help all of her students. She is very good at balancing fun and learning. I didn't even realize how much I was learning until the end of each quarter. I had her for 3 quarters in a row and would still be taking her if she taught my next math course. She is by far the best teacher I have ever had.
I thought I was going to hate her class after the first day when she went through all the rules in the syllabus, but she is actually a really cool teacher! She understands us and knows when to break it all down and clarify. I had a lot of fun in her class, never missed one! I also learned a lot more in her class than in any other at the school!
She is AWESOME! This course is jam packed with material, but her teaching methods and style are superb. She's pretty nice to look at at 8 in the morning, too.
I'm in the middle of a quarter with her for Calc C. She can be a little intimidating at times, but she is a really good person who wants the class to succeed. She is VERY good at explaining material and answering questions, and encourages students to see her for help. Her tests are pretty fair as well, but homework quizzes add a lot of stress.
she hot
Best Math Professor I have had. Can be intimidating doesnt like people showing up late. If you dont do well in the class its your fault not hers there are is no better prof.
Really easy to understand. Teaches fast but thats because it's alot of material for 10 weeks. Always available for extra help. Her tests and quizzes are exact reflections of material covered in class, unlike some math teachers who throw you complete surprise problems. would recommend her to anyone
Awesome teacher! Excellent Calculus professor.
I spent most of the time looking at her than concentrating in the class.....but still managed to get a B. Her tests are fairly easy.
Professor Olles is a fantastic Teacher. She writes all of her lesson on the bored as she speaks it and really tries to help students get the grade. Nothing hard about the class, uses the same problems throughout tests, quizzes and the final. She is quite beautiful as well. A++++++++
Tough professor! She knows her stuff, explains it well and has high expectations. You will not COAST through her class you'll have to work. But she'll help you the whole way. Her husband is an engineering prof at RIT so she knows exactly what's expected of us. She won't let you get out of her class passing if you dont know the material well enough.
Its just so hard to take off your eyes from her ;) Thats the reason I have 100% attendance in her class. Of course, she teaches pretty awesome.
Great Professor to have. Excellent Teaching method. Very helpful at all times; she also motivates students to perform well in the class. Prof. Olles is an Excellent professor. I really recommend her for any math courses you take.
Very good. doesnt correct the homework however quiz is every week, right off the hw. overall i liked the class
Just took my final... very tough but I felt like I knew my stuff. She really prepared us for it and proves to be an extremely good professor who cares about her students success!
she is really clear and really helpful. don't be late and go to office hours and you can easily do well.
Great teacher, tough on grading but you never fall a common core exam.
Prof Olles is the best Calculus teacher at RIT. Her exams are difficult, but only because they truly asses your knowledge. If you want a fun, clear, organized, helpful professor, take her.
you are a great teacher. you need to change office hours: it says "winter quarter".
you are a great teacher. you need to change office hours: it says "winter quarter". This website keeps screwing up on me when I click "rate this professor". I wouldn't continue to use it if I were you. and I fixed the cookies like it told me to, but something else is wrong and it doesn't say, just says "site error".
Great teacher! Helpful, serious about what she does. Very clear with notes and examples, tried to get her for Cal for ET II, but it filled up before I could register!
Took for Calc II for ET and Diff EQ. Best math teacher ever! Breaks everything down so it makes sense. Weekly quizzes help with grading and she drops lowest. Tests aren't too bad if you study and do the hw(which she doesn't collect/grade)
I thought she was a really awesome teacher. She likes to be sarcastic and she pushes you to do your best. She clarified a lot of topics for me that I didn't understand in high school. She's constantly urging us to come to her if we're confused. Overall, I had an awesome experience with Prof. Olles.
Olles is really good at teaching new material in a manner that everyone can understand. If you don't understand the material she is always willing to help you figure it out.
She is perhaps that best teacher I've ever had. She seems very uptight and grumpy, but that's just because she's very no-nonsense. She's extraordinarily helpful 1-on-1, and writes everything on the board clearly. She grades tough, but it's only because she wants you prepared. If I can take more classes in the future with her, I will!
Calc Foundations 2, have friends in some of her other classes who say she is hard, but in my opinion its her teaching style. She is a little rough and kind of a hard ass, but its for your benefit if you need to go into higher levels of math. She is super helpful as long as you put forth effort and talk to her. Do the homework if you have her!!!
I was lucky enough to have her as my Calc A, B, and C professor. Not only does she care about how her students perform, but she really is passionate about them learning and understanding the material. She will push you, but as long as you want to learn, you'll do well. Wish she taught all my math classes. Best math professor I've ever had.
She is the most annoying grader ever. Takes off for things as little as forgetting to FULLY show ever single step and computation. Other than that she is OK.
I literally love her, I am in calc b now and i am doing really well, she is a tough grader but she is seriously such a good teacher, if u take her other math classes are gonna be easier. Plus she's really nice to look at it helps you pay attention.
Professor Olles is wonderful. She is passionate about what she teaches and makes sure to explain things in a way that everyone will understand. If people don't understand, she will go through and explain the whole thing again in a different way. She was always a very fair grader and extremely helpful during office hours. Best professor so far!!!
did't post solutions on mycourses and said that system didn't work .Why cannot send email?
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME. Such a great teacher. She always knows what she's talking about and she was definitely the best math teacher I've ever had. She's definitely difficult and you'll have to work hard in her class to get an A. But as long as you're willing, TAKE HER! Definitely one of those hidden gems of RIT.
Professor Olles class was pretty hard compared to the class I took before this. I had a prof who didnt have any rules or standards so it was hard to adjust. But Olles cared about us learning the material and structured her class so that would could. I can say I learned more in her class than any other math class before. Take her if you can.
She is TOUGH! But, you will know your stuff and have a lot of pride when done with her class. She explains EVERYTHING and answers anyone's questions. Don't be afraid to go see her for help. She wants to see her students succeed.
love her. take her class. she knows her stuff.
we just took our first test it was harder than anything i have ever taken from any other professor but we were so prepared and she gives partial credit so i did great and so did a lot of my classmates
I am doing fine in the class. I have a good algebra background and I am able to focus on the calculus we are learning. Some of the others in our class are bad at algebra and are not doin as good. She held review sessions for the class over the weekend before our last test. I didnt go but heard they helped. She is nice and wants us to do OK.
Olles is the best math teacher that I've ever had. I learned more math when taking her class than I did in any other class that I have yet taken. With this said I explicitly refused to take a later class with this professor. Her tests are killer and unfair. Not recommended unless you are very good at math or an extraordinarily dedicated student
I love this class. She really wants to make sure we know what we are doing. She always answers questions. She is a tough grader but thats becuz she wants us to reach perfection and says we can do it. Take her class and you will learn.
If you want an easy A, DON'T take this class. She expects you to learn. She always says it is a prerequisite for the next course and she doesn't send you on unless you've mastered this stuff. I get it, but I'm not a math major. That being said, I did enjoy class. She loves teaching, and that helps.
She's a weird combination of no-nonsense and super chill that makes her real as hell. Lectures were not always super interesting, but they were straightforward and easy to understand if you paid attention. Highly competent, definitely knows what she's talking about.
Best math professor I've ever had- no nonsense but relaxed at the same time. Just a very honest professor who earnestly wants you to learn but won't do the work for you (most of the time). If you've worked your way to her class and actually do the work in her class, you'll do really well. If you don't actually care, neither will she.
She is the best math professor at RIT. I took her Diffy Q and Multi Var Calc class and had to work for my A. But she was there every step of the way willing to help. Tough Homework, Tough Tests, Easy Final.
She is awesome. Her lectures are pretty straight forward and a lot comes from the textbook. She usually has quizzes after every section. Her quizzes are fair most of the times. If you have questions about the homework, quiz, or section go to her after class, you won't regret it.
Follows Prof. Lahnovych's curriculum exactly, so if you don't likedidn't do well with Lahnovych, don't even try Olles. Has a very dry sense of humor and very little patience for students who don't show 100% effort. Grades tough, or has Lahnovych grade for her. Comes off very busyfrustrated and unapproachable.
Great explanations , provides many work problems , great lectures class passes fast, he is hilarious at times. I definitely recommend this professor.
She is the BEST professor I had in all my 5years at RIT. I struggled in math classes and Professor Olles was the difference that made me succeed. Expect to work hard, that's the nature of the course, but Olles is always in her office and more than willing to help.
She should do a TED talk. Our class is so much more interesting when she goes on her "encouraging words for the day" rants. She made me realize that I am responsible for myself and to own that. But she is there to help us to. Probably the best choice in freshman math prof. I would not have this much guidance and push from anyone else.
Awesome teacher, knows what she's doing. Very fast pace course but her and her L.A.'s (Learning assistants) do a very good job of helping you understand and get through the material. You can choose to breeze through the course or you could go to recitations and earn a solid B-A+ depending on how well you understand the material. Very fast pace tho
Tough but fair. Make the effort, and get help if you need it (she's made sure that plenty of help is available), and you should do fine. If you're late, or if you pull your phone out, she will yell at you. But she's really not a mean professor, she just has expectations.
Differential equations is tough and Olles made it a manageable class. At first it seemed like it was going to be overwhelming with the workload, but it got better.
Easily the best math professor I have ever had. Had her for Calculus A and immediately wanted her for calculus B and MATH 211. She has helped me understand math in a way I thought I never could. She breaks down difficult concepts in a way that lets you figure out how to do them. She won't just hand you the answers, but she lets you figure it out.
Olles is very neat and organized with her lectures and has amazingly clear whiteboard handwriting. Her 211 class has Learning Instructors with out of class recitation hours that will help you do homework or worksheets to makeup bad HW grades. Her tests are long but if you go to class every day and participate you will be okay.
Easily the best math professor I've ever had, high school or college. After having her for Calculus A and Calculus B I knew I had to take her for 211. Really good about giving feedback and trying to push you to be your best. The lectures are very clear and understandable, but don't miss class, ever.
shes an incredible teacher. very personable, and one of the most dedicated ive seen. if you ever need help she is one of the most open to have anyone come and get help out of all the professors at rit. she grades tough, but fair. work hard and youll earn your grade
You can tell she cares, but she is really strict about lateness and missing class. She is also a really tough grader and will take points off for minor things. I can see how students think she is a good professor, but I wouldn't take her again.
Don't take a class with her, annoying grader. Removing points for minor, minor things. If you come to class one minute late with a finished homework assignment she will give you a zero. Smug for no reason, massive ego.
She is so helpful!! She makes time for her students. I have never met a professor who cares more. People complain about her grading but I don't think it's unfair at all. I think she grades tough because her standards are high. But she encourages and supports us to be great and really cares about us succeeding.
She's a very tough grader and is very strict on notation but she is a great professor and lecturer. Go to her office hours and she'll help you. If she sees you're trying it will pay off and be worth it in the end
She doesnt just give you a score on a problem. She takes off specific amounts of points per mistake and points out where the mistake is and how to fix it. This helps me learn how to improve and find where I need to improve. With some other teachers, I just wonder why I lost points and it doesnt help me at all. I feel like i bug them when i ask.
My fall semester for next year is ruined. She will Be on maternity leave and isnt teaching any classes. I was hoping to take 211 with her. She is my favorite professor by far.
I had to take online math class for the summer as it is not offered in the fall or spring. Be ready for tons of homework, lectures, and pre/post tests. It is time consuming, but remind yourself that when you pass the class, you won't have to take it again. That's what I said to myself in order to stay motivated.
Fantastic teacher. Well organized, easy to understand, easy to understand.
Professor Olles is one of those incredible (but rare) math teachers. Her class structure is very unique since it has hands-on problem solving instead of sitting at your desk for 2 hours. Her lectures are extremely informative (if you pay attention). And, if you get something wrong - she will tell you how to fix it and guide you through the process.
She's a good professor when she attends class. She missed 2 weeks worth of classes that made our class behind, because the course is taught by a team of professors our class was not able to go back & actually learn it (before COVID). Beware of her communication. She will NEVER answer your emails & refuses to give an alternate form of communication.
Would give 0 stars if I could. Gave me attitude from the start, didn't get along with her the rest of the semester. Comes off as very egotistic, can be very rude and once you get on her bad side you're not coming back. Forced myself to tolerate her so that I could pass and never see her again. Thankfully I did and I don't have to take her again.
I had her for MATH171 and MATH172 and she was one of my favorite professors. Her teaching style is very organized which makes it easy to understand the information. Can be tough on you but just pay attention and take advantage of all the resources offered. Very specific about grading but if you attend class and ask for clarification you'll succeed.
Does not give enough time to get group work done and tells you to do one thing one week and then tells you to not do it the next! Wont write comments on work just Xs things out and doesnt explain
Gives little to no feedback on what you do wrong. Always has an attitude about things and acts very unprofessionally. This is a subject I know and have passed classes in before but she claims my work is not at a collegiate level (something which has not been a problem with any other professor in my time at college, btw). Avoid.
I dont know why other people dont like her. I go to her office hours all the time and she is super helpful. She is very clear about what to expect when she grades our work but people complain about it. Also think she has a right to be upset when people dont pay attention to announcements cuz she posts them everywhere and announces in zoom class.
The best college professor I have had! I've had her for 3 semesters and she genuinely cares about her students. She can be hard on students that are not respectful or are not taking their education seriously but if you are here to learn she will be your best friend.
Oh boy reading some comments some of you guys are real doofuses, its common knowledge that she doesn't grade homework but a grader usually does, so go ask her if you have a problem. I would also have an attitude if you come into my class half naked or cursing. She is one of the better math professors and I would recommend her. Welcome to college.
Professor Olles is amazing. She always makes herself available with office hours and is always willing to make appointments with students whose schedules don't align with her hours. Just make the time and reach out! If you put in effort, she will put in effort. She always asks if anyone has any questions before moving on. Would no doubt take again!
Great Prof!
Professor has little respect for you as a student. Very uptight and will not take any criticism. She is a very strict grader and will have it one way and one way only. Overall just unfriendly and not enjoyable to interact with.
Olles is a wonderful professor, shes a tough person who really cares about her students success and provides countless office hours for help, she also provides great feedback and if you dont understand something she will stop everything to help you. Overall shes an empathetic caring professor and a wonderful person.
Professor Olles is seriously the best math teacher I've ever had. I've never been great at math, and an A is unheard of for me, especially calculus, but she explains things in a way that is so clear and her lectures are easy to follow along (and her handwriting is insanely neat). If you don't understand, she will work with you until you get it!
Very knowledgeable. Likes group work during each class. Overall a very nice prof who wants you to succeed and do well in her class. She makes sure you understand content before moving on in lectures.
Overall, I had a very pleasant experience with Professor Olles. At first, she was a bit strict and condescending, but as the class progressed I really came to like her. She really wanted you to understand not only the material, but why it all works. She is very helpful in office hours as well, she clearly wants to help you understand everything.
You need to go to the lectures, but going to the lectures feels good with Professor Olles. She is by far the best at explaining and teaching that I have had so far at RIT.
Professor Olles is the best math professor I've ever had. I'm not someone who's enjoyed math before now, but I was actually excited to go to her class. She has fairly clear grading criteria, and if you pay attention in class and take good notes you'll do fine. She'll tell you what the exams are on, and posts exam review guides.
She is very nice and super friendly. The lectures are very helpful with lots of practice examples and the workshops are very helpful and go along with the lectures nicely. The class was mainly integrals and it was one quiz a week and three exams. Favorite math teacher at RIT so far.
One of the best Professors I have ever had
Professor Olles was an incredible math professor. She may not be super smiley, but that doesn't mean she's mean. She took her time to learn our names and always helped us to the best of her ability. She's super knowledgable and it shows. Her teaching style flows really well and I rarely checked out during a lecture. Take her class if you can!!!
She is really great at teaching hard concepts in easy ways! If you choose not to go to class then you'll miss her good explanations and it'll be hard to catch up and understand what's going on. As long as you go to class, participate, and pay attention you should be great! Love her personality and she wants to help everyone the best she can. Great!
Professor Olles taught this class like a high school class, and talked to her students like highschoolers. Her ratings are so high because as a primarily first year teacher, her students don't yet know that most professors treat their students with respect. Class isn't hard if you study.
I had to work for my grade but she was with me every step of the way. I really struggled through calc 1 and 2 because I didnt have the back ground i needed. She helped me learn the algebra trig and calc while i learned the diff eq and I never felt smarter. I was at every office hour which were always packed because everyone wants to be around her.
The worst professor I have ever had. She made my semester a nightmare if you have accommodations take ANY other professor. She will not let use them in class and will not grade your work till a while after everyone else has their grades. On top of that she will give you back your exam with no feedback and missing pages. She makes easy classes hard.
