Great professor. Lets you take almost every quiz in groups.
Do not take any ACG class over summer. This teacher moves fast and is not very clear. Only gave group quizzes since it was summer session not fall or spring. Is only an average teacher, nothing special. Take her as a backup to your first choice teacher. You must put effort into this class or you will fail, it's not a breeze.
EXCELLENT professor! Highly recommended. She's tough but for a reason - and it works. She's smart, she's hot, and she's fun. A+
She's a good teacher, very smart. The problem lies with the fact that accounting is just a hard class. She doesnt always move at a slow pace, but is always willing to help in or after class. And she is pretty hot.
totally blows balls..alls she talks about is accounting fraud and doesn't teach jack except how to be uninformative WAY TO GO

This teacher isnt that great....my opinion-find a different teacher to take this class with!!
This teachers sucks. She doesn't actually reach because she expects you to teach yourself. The first day she told the cladd that 1/2 of us were going to fail, and that she is not there to teach us (only to moderate).
Totolly sucked as a teacher. Doesn't teach the class at all and just "expects" you to get it. Her tests are very hard and you must basically teach yourself or you will fail her class. The only thing that kept me going was the fact that she was a very cute woman who wears these tight outfits!
First of all, Accounting just is a hard and horrible class to begin with. With this being said, the semester was a total nightmare. I really did not like this professor because of her teaching style. She expected all of us to know everything, which is very unfair. She did have tests throughout the semester, and allowed you to be in groups.
This is hands down one of the most competent and capable teachers for an EXTREMELY hard subject. Intermediate accounting covers a LOT of stuff, and at every college, the failure rate is between 25% and 50% - the slackers WILL fail, no mercy. Without such a great teacher, this class would be totally impossible to handle.
Accounting is difficult so you need to be ready to read and do homework. Burgess has a unique teaching style so you have to be ready for perky. She does mostly just skim the information but what she does cover you learn well. I would suggest taking her if your willing to put the effort in.
If you have tot ake accounting at FGCU, you better get into Conrecodes class or not even take it at all. Burgess teaches you how to do things, but then the tests are totally different then what you were tought. I wouldn't reccomend her, take burgess at your own risk.
Very energetic and nice. But she was not the best teacher. Her test were difficult and she gave pop quizes every other class, but only counted half of them. Look for a better teacher but if nothing else is available she isnt too bad
Don't be fooled; on the first day of class, you will think Burgess is fun and that this will be an okay class. WRONG. I got my first C ever in this class--no, not sour g****s, its not the grade its that I experienced the most frustrating teacher ever. The class moves quickly, there is a lot to cover but then the test is NOTHING like the material!
I can't stand this woman. I have never been so frustrated with a professor as I have with her. On the first, and most difficult exam, she decided that we were to calculate the PVAD using the PVOA factor tables with a formula. Her test formats are rediculous and her lectures are all over the place. I wish someone else taught FRA II She frustrates
If you're an "A" student and do your homework, you'll be fine. She's not a bad teacher, it's just tough material. Stop whining everyone!
Difficult class. Not a lot of room to make up any bad grades. Final was worth something like 50% of course grade and there was one ridiculous question worth 60% of the test's total points. I walked out of the exam thinking I bombed it but must have benefited from a severe curve. Best looking professor at the school. Attendance is worth it ;)
Very hard class, but you learn a lot. Exams are difficult, even with a notecard. If you can, take another teacher.
A good teacher for a very difficult and highly demanding subject. She is starting to get away from the whole "teach you one way and test you on an entirely different way" mentality. It wouldn't be so bad if she taught the alternative, but that is not the case. Definitely a hottie.
While her upbeat attitude and willingness to teach is definitely a benifit of this professor. Her disregard for the text, poor explanation of material, and horrible hand writting make this already demanding class a nightmare. Steer clear of this professor.
good teacher, but too hard a grader. She teaches FRA 2, Audit and Core 1. For Core 1,get Conrecode; Burgess is way too hard. In FRA2, you will study hard and feel like your going to do well, and then the difficulty of her tests will blow you away
Awesome professor. Difficult class, but if you attend classes and try you can easily suceed. She has lots of energy and makes sure the class understands the material. 4 exams, lots of quizzes only counts top 5, homework isn't graded. I highly recommend Dr. Burgess.
This class is very fast-paced and extremely difficult. Even with good notes and doing all the assignments, half our class isn't going to pass and will have to re-take next semester...
Accounting is hard but she does not follow the text. Expect to do extra work on your own and really work the homework in different ways. She also requires you to use he way of doing things such as with cash flow... which is a bit old school and takes longer. Not the worst Proff. but try for someone else if you can.
The material itself is not that hard, but the problem is that she doesn't know how to teach. Do all the end the chapter problems. I noticed that the AICPA and CMA adapted problems are very similar to the ones on the exam. Good luck!
Professor Burgess was the single most frustrating professor I have ever had. Her teaching is HORRIBLE! She is condescending and completely scatter-brained. This class was the biggest waste of time ever. I am a straight A student and ended up dropping her class because I had a 43%. NEVER TAKE HER!!!!!
Professor Burgess is a great teacher. Everything she says is true: You are doing a disservice to yourself if you don't practice. Practice builds confidence, etc. The reviews from previous semesters seem to be negative; perhaps, she improved her teaching style, because I felt she was both fair and attentive.
Make it hard to understand
I have been on the Deans list for 2 semesters. Straight A student, study very hard, prep well in advance, NOT a slacker! Warning: DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Scatter brained, loses thought, students correct her constantly, book is useless, uses her own terms, tests nothing like practice problems, etc. 100% Miserable, should retire!!! Got a "C"!!!
I'm a third-year student, and up until Burgess, I had a 4.0 GPA. She gave me a C+. I went to study groups, did practice exams, etc., but nothing she told us to study and nothing she actually talked about appeared on the tests! She did not teach well at all, and she continuously made mistakes. TERRIBLE TEACHER--don't take her.
Dr. Burgess seems really nice at first, but DON'T FALL FOR IT! She has no problem screwing you over at every turn. Exam questions have NOTHING to do with course material and are insanely confusing.
The subject is difficult anyhow, but Burgess makes it painful. She's scatterbrained and unhelpful. Her tests are nothing like what she teaches in class. If you have any choice, take someone else.
Burgess actually makes it more difficult to learn the material. If you're not good at learning the material on your own, you will be after her class. She puts questions on the quizzes and tests that have not been covered in class, but at least she grades fairly.
Very hard class, lots of work and she gives pop quizzes, but only counts the top 5 quiz scores. If everyone in class participates she is the best at teaching the subject. However if students don't participate in class, she kinda doesn't want to either which makes it hard to learn. She does grade tests fairly if you show your work.
Horrible. Was the worst class I have ever had. She is confusing and doesn't really teach. When ever you have an issue with anything she just says "Ive been doing this for 25 years..."
Worst class I ever had. Put questions on the exam that were not covered in class. I studied non-stop for this class and barely received a B. I have worked as an accountant for over 10 years, so it was not from lack of understanding the material. Avoid this professor if you can.
AWEFUL professor. Makes many topics more confusing than needed. Tests are ridiculous. Avoid if you can.
For an already demanding subject, Burgess can definitely be what "Breaks" accounting for you. Is very clear in class and quizzes are challenging (as they should be). Exams are a whole different story. Be prepared to see concepts or problems that you may be entirely unfamiliar with even if you studied like a pro. It can get frustrating.
The only guidance in this course was her syllabus and sadly there was none in class. Her quizzes are ridiculous. People quit their jobs to pass this course. Be prepared to drop money on books not required by the course. She uses them for test questions. Get ready to teach yourself everything again if you're not fresh outta FinA I-II & Managerial.
She's the hardest professor I have ever had. She is a very intelligent woman and thinks we should all be as smart as her. She bullies us and gets upset when we don't understand something. Her tests are ridiculous. The first test had things on it that weren't in the lecture and weren't in the book. If you take her the brown book will be your savior.
This person has no business in front of a classroom. She may know the material, but she is completely lacking in the ability to communicate material clearly to others. She really does very little teaching. What teaching she does do will often make the class material less clear. Her tests do not in any way reflect the material in the textbook.
Does grade for correct answers, just grades for HER methodology
She is my least favorite professor that I have had in all of my four years of college. She is scatter-brained and very unprepared for every class, even though she's been using the same material for years. Her classes are frustrating because she has very specific expectations but gives vague instructions. Thankful that she only teaches 1 grad class.
Learned more in one semester than in three years of ACG classes. You will get burned on a couple exam questions just because you weren't expecting that exact transaction. But if you pay attention and do the hw *before* class, the overall increase in ACG knowledge is more than worth it. Quiz format exam format, so any surprises are manageable.
I have no idea how this woman has gotten anything above average. I can see some personalities matching hers better than others, but she is the worst professor I have ever had. This was the "weed out the weak ones" class and she certainly made that her goal. She goes of topic and what is on the test you do not learn in class.
If you don't constantly tell yourself you love accounting, you will not pass her class. She is just a mean person who does not have any business teaching. She talks about herself constantly and goes off on tangents. Material on tests is not covered in class or in the book. Be prepared to read, use the Gleim book, and keep a good attitude.
She was the hardest teacher I have ever taken. We would do the homework she assigned then she would tell us we did it wrong (even though we did it exactly how the book taught us). She expected us to know how the "real world" did it without teaching us the "real world" way. She also said she'd give us 20 quizzes and drop 10, she only gave 13.
It is a hard class but its upper level, so what do you expect? if you do all the problems she assigns and practice enough, you will pass. She teaches you everything you need and gives you exactly what to expect on the tests. she is a great teacher. you just have to spend a lot of time and do your part
Burgess is tough, but she prepares you for the real world and the higher level courses. Missing class will put you way behind. Sometimes she drones on without making much sense but if you do the homework she will help you pass. She seems scary but once you get past the initial class she is really helpful.
I'm not going to lie, I heard all the horror stories about Burgess. I was so scared the first day of class. But honestly, it was not bad at all. The pop quizzes will force you to stay on top of your stuff so, dont fall behind. If you can pass FRA2, you will be fine in FRA3 bc Dr. Burgess actually teaches exactly what is on her exams.
I don't know why there are such negative reviews on here. Burgess is an excellent professor. She is tremendously intelligent and super easy to get a long with. People struggle with her class but honestly if you just listen and do her practice quizzes you will be fine. I passed with an A and studied once a week. Very fair grader.
Worst Teacher to teach financial accounting. Not a great help with your assignments. you might as well learn from your textbooks and tutors.
Burgess isn't as nearly as bad as people say. I think those people that struggle with her class aren't putting in the necessary effort required of a CPA. She prepares you for the real world by not babying you and making you responsible for your own education. Read the chapters before class, go to class and do practice problems and you'll be fine.
I honestly don't have the strength in my soul to leave a proper comment. All I can say right now is, it is very unfortunate that this is the ONLY option for FRA 3. FGCU should be ashamed.
She's everywhere. She is a tough grader, and the sad thing about it is she makes up her own exams or quizzes with minimal instructions. The worst thing about her is she thinks we are in her brain and her experience. I am afraid of asking her a question because she is tough. I don't think she should be teaching this class, maybe just grad classes.
You can't prepare for the quizzes. Reading the chapter, doing the practice problems, and using WileyPlus practice problems won't help. Nothing is curved if everyone fail the quizzes. If you like to be on an emotional rollercoaster this is your professor. Lectures for a new chapter is skimming PowerPoint and a quiz, then a practice problem and quiz.
This was the worst class that I have ever taken. Please do not take this professor at all costs she does not care about her students and does not even teach. She gives no signal as to what the exams are gonna be about. This has been my only class that I have not passed and I put a lot of time into this class.
It is amazing that for the hardest accounting class your only option is the worst accounting professor. Extremely messy handwriting, does not go by the textbook at all, very vague instructions. Awful
This is a 100% unbiased review and factual statements. Doesn't cover the full material in every chapter, tends to get off topic. In class quizzes are hand written (messy) and are nothing like the homework or textbook problems. Don't rely on practice exams for studying. Expect material on exams that you never learned Take any other teacher but her!!
This class is hard as it is, but with a professor who is unable to teach, it makes it almost impossible to pass. This professor doesn't care about her students and barely makes an effort to tell you what's on the exams. The resources she gives out doesn't help at all and I basically had to teach myself everything.
Worst professor I've ever had, her hand writing is terrible, and if you don't get what she is talking about in class she won't even try and explain how to go through it. Expect to teach yourself everything.
This professor is the worst in all of the accounting department at FGCU. Please do not take her! The worst part is that she is the only option for the hardest accounting class which is FRA 3. I am not looking forward to taking her for that class and hopefully FGCU steps up their game and there is another professor or option.
Dr. Burgess is extremely smart & friendly, but her class was 1 of the hardest I've taken at FGCU & I didn't do well. I could've gotten a B/ C if I read the book more. PLS READ & UTILIZE TUTORING/HER OFFICE HOURS! Unfortunately I need to re-take this course with a professor who matches my learning style more. Confusing lessons and exams.
ACG4123 in itself is a difficult class. Dr. Burgess just adds to that difficulty by being the most difficult, un-sympathetic professor I have ever met. Tests look nothing like she teaches and you have to do them her way even if there is an easier way. Average for the quizzes is a 41% and 75% of the class is failing. Will be transferring to get away
More than likely, this class has to be taken multiple times. Awful communication of material. Only professor teaching this class, and the pass rate is atrocious. The quiz averages are failing grades. Material is very technical, and the textbook is not used to prepare for exams. Video lectures are rough too. Worst class I have taken.
I took this professor in 2003 for FRA1 and withdrew a couple times. It looks like she has not change. I am now a CPA and an accounting professor. I remind myself regularly to not be like this professor. If you are struggling in this class don't give up. Keep trying! Find a study group, YouTube videos and other tutorials to get you through.
Professor Burgess is the hardest is literally the MOST difficult person and lecturer. This class is a very difficult in general and she makes it that much more difficult. It is imperative that you find other resources to teach yourself in order to pass the class. She is also not understanding whatsoever.
I just started taking this professor for FRA 3, I heard many horror stories and read a lot of reviews and they are all correct. This woman is impossible which in turn makes this class impossible. I am going to try my best and hope to pass the class and not retake but yeah, the reviews are right on point.
First off, FGCU should be ashamed. Secondly, this is by far the worst Professor I have ever had. She is rude and tries to embarrass you with the extra credit assignment by having you do a video that is only worth 2 or 3 points. And, if you don't do the extra credit, she takes an additional 2 points off your grade. FGCU should be ashamed.
She is terrible. An extremely difficult Professor. She does not teach you anything like how it is taught in the book. Everything is made up by her and you basically need to be inside her brain to get any of what she is teaching. Her grading is very hard. Her quizzes alone can fail you if you don't do well on them. They are heavily graded.
If you are reading this, it is not too late to switch teachers. This teacher will make your life extremely difficult. She was the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. Imagine you are on a spaceship for the first time with an experience astronaut and she tells you to figure it out while your plummeting at 500 miles per hour back down to earth.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! AT ALL!!!! SHES A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR AND DOESNT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS! She literally wont even listen to your questions If you have any, cut you off and is very degrading. I am not recommending FGCU to ANYONE due to them not firing this professor because this reflects on FGCU POORLY!!!
This professor is the worst. Im recommending future students to not take Accounting at FGCU because she doesnt care about her students, shes rude & she thinks we think like her and is unsympathetic towards her students whenever something happens outside of class. This class is already difficult. I wish i took this class somewhere else.
I've had my share of difficult professors. However: First week of the semester, the day of class at 2AM she sends you the chapter you need to read before class, 50 pages long. You must also watch her two online lectures of 30 minutes each. You must also practice problems from the book to be prepared for her Quiz which is at the beginning of class!
She does not follow the book! You spent 5 core classes learning from the book just to have her impose on you her difficult templates. She treats you like a criminal as if you were to cheat, there is more security for her quizzes than to enter the White House. She makes her own exams which follow her templates and include many errors. Does not care!
She is the most unsympathetic and difficult professor i have ever had. The students are not exaggerating when they say that she doesnt care and grades unfairly. The worst part is shes the only professor teaching it i swear she has a secret vendetta against the students. If youre planning to graduate on time go to a diff school.
As a straight-A student, I knew coming into FRA3 she would be brutal but I did not know it would be THAT brutal. Her class is a 9-5+ job on its own of pure studying. I had to work my butt off to just barely make a B. Get ready to have no life and to cry more than you have ever cried before. Quiz on the first day AND directly after exams.
Here is the formula to excel in this class. 1) Go to class 2) Take great notes 3) Do the problems she assigns until they are glued to your brain (most important). Do not read the textbook just do those three things and I promise you will pass. In my opinion, FRA 2 was harder.
Not only is this course required for certain majors but her grading scale is INSANE. You spend 3 hours in a mind-numbing lecture and she expects you to watch hour long videos after class on top of reading the book. 0/10 do not take her class save yourself the headache and possible failing grade. She is also extremely rude could care abt students.
Professor Burgess was great with her teaching financial accounting.
Her grading is terrible, sets students up for failure. If you're looking to a pass quit your fulltime job, this is yours now. Need to retake again but not with her disappointed I had to even pay for this. :(
Burgess is a great professor just don't take her online classes. When you take the exams, you have to copy and paste the template into a small screen. Small and frustrating. You have to scroll up and down constantly. Something that took me 10 mins in Excel took me 30-40 mins to do on the online format.
I had high hopes when starting this class as Ms. Burgess is such a genuinely nice person, but just when you thought your friendly neighbor was going to bring you freshly baked cookies, reality strikes. Luckily Ms. Burgess took a leave of absence from the school due to personal reasons and we had a great substitute. She simply couldn't teach.
Switch professors or majors! Maybe transfer this course in? Its been a few years, but her class was traumatizing. Normally, I read these posts with a pinch of salt. NOPE! Not hers. She is the last make-or-break Acct class & she's Gandalf. I'm pretty sure I've caught her grading papers smiling while listening to Queen's “Another One Bites the Dust."
