A tough class, but she is probably one of the better teachers to have for it...and though she doesn't fit the typical description of a "hotty", I know I had more than one wet dream about her.
She makes you want to learn the material because she is so passionate about it and makes class fun with her comic outlook on everthing. Good teacher hard class.
Pretty tough class, a lot of info- Her quizes were pretty hard and the tests were tricky. She is a goofball so it made class interesting, but some topics she wasnt very clear
She isn't very clear when she explains the material. When explaining she things that everybody knows got it, but only 10 out of the 125 students of the class understand her. she is kind of goofy which is alright I guess. she gives quizes every friday which are alright but the tests are hard.
GREAT TEACHER!!! REALLY CARES. DIFFERENT THAN OTHER FACULTY MEMBERS. Very good. would recommend to everyone that needs to take chemistry. Great person too. Loves diet coke.
She is a bit weird. She can make classes interesting, but most of the time fails to engage the class
She is the worst professor I have EVER had I have 100 hundred credits and I have had many professors. She is supposed to have a doctorate in her field yet she cant answer simple Chem110 questions. She is a simple minded lonely useless peon.
Good teacher, sometimes sarcasticly rude.
Crazy woman that loves Chemistry, Diet coke, Pittsburg Steelers. Has very "out there" teaching style, which is hard to follow. Fair grading system. very hard to get an A in class. Class average is about a C to C+ Tests are must study for. Simple minded teacher that tries but fails to engage class.
Is difficult but in a fair way. Most students who take this class are entering freshman, of course she isn't going to babysit. You study and work, you get an A. You don't know how to do that? Reconsider for an "easier" teacher. Friendly, tries to teach conepts rather than math.
Tests are very difficult. Mostly essay questions, minimal multiple choice. She does care and will make herself available to you. Attendance is a must...will seriously dock your grade if you miss at all.
Wow..Terrible teacher, unwilling to help, tests are ridiculously hard and most of the questions are not even covered in class.
Her tests are tricky, but if you study you should do fine. She tries to engage the class by making jokes and comparing the situations that we are learning about to real life. I learned so much in this class and she was my favorite professor of the semester. She really does know what she is talking about and is very passionate about her subject.
Very standoffish. She doesn't seem interested in the students at all. Moves on rapidly without regard for confused students. Doesn't teach to, she teaches at. Strongly recommend any other theacher.
She is a terrible teacher. I did not learn anything in that class. Her tests are ridiculously hard, and follow nothing about what she taught.
This professor is very enthusiastic about her work. She tells jokes and relates the subjects to real life situations. The way she teaches kind of sets you off guard to learning. She gets off topic a little sometimes while talking about herself but overall she is a pretty interesting professor.
She is a very hard instructor and does not convey the ideas very well. Always talking about twinkies, diet coke, and Tom Selleck. She totally loses her class and goes too fast covering the material. I have had her for 111 and 112 chem. For an entry level course they are much too detailed. The exams and class work have nothing to do with each other
very bad attitude. Acts like she's nice and friendly but has a very bad temper, and loses her cool real quick.
This professor was extremely unhelpful. Going into this class, I was open minded and fairly optimistic. As time progressed, the work got harder and she kept moving on without explaining what she was trying to teach. This is one of those classes where if you don't understand something at the beginning, you are doomed.
Dr. Dunlavy is i very enthusiastic professor that likes to digress from her point from time to time, but these digressions are not often and are usually amusing. As well as a good break from the tediousness of chemistry. She is a fair grader, and granted that the class is hard she is willing to help one if they are willing to try.
Absolutely horrible teacher! I never missed a lecture and was still behind. She does not care about students at all just diet coke and twInkies. Worst professor I have had in my college career.
She is more concerned with food and her cat then teaching chemistry. To explain an idea she giggled her thighs to demonstrate that the bigger something is the easier it moves around. I still have nightmares...
Dr. Dunlavy tries hard to get people to remeber things by association. I don't think it works well for many students. Wish she would have used more chemistry associations/demonstrations. Might be a great instructor for you but not for me.
The most challenging class of my college career. Lectures are extremely hard to follow as she switches from projector to chalkboard and the book. The workload is too much.
I'm sorry if you have to take her. she does not teach well at all. pretty much had to learn everything on my own.
I liked her teaching style after I got used to it. She uses clickers and power points during her lectures and randomly picks students to answer questions in class. Her tests are difficult but after the first one, I figured out how she likes to do it so I did well on the rest. She is a fair grader and explains things fairly well.
Dr. Dunlavy was a good professor. However, it takes her FOREVER to grade the exams. Sometimes she wouldn't have the exams graded by the time the next exam came around. So you never are sure with how well you are doing in the class. Otherwise, she is a good teacher and has good examples.
The one word I would use to describe Dr. Dunlavy is USELESS. She gets side tracked, takes forever to grade exams, she's rude, doesn't explain herself, and shows no interest in helping you outside of class. Worst. Professor. EVER.
I hated this class. Dr. Dunlavy wastes so much time and doesn't teach! All we do is sit there and answer clicker questions. She expects us to answer the questions without her lecturing on how to answer them! Then it would take 50 minutes to do 2 problems!
Absolutely wonderful professor. Everyone is complaining so much but myself, and my roommate are awful at chemistry and we learned so much from that class! She's a wonderful professor, not boring. TAKE HER CLASS!!
Dr. Dunlavy can be extremely rude and goes on even if the class average is extremely low and students are confused. This does not surprise me though because the CHEM DEPT at NMSU is absolutely horrific. The lab TAs barely speak any English & the lab is way ahead of lecture which causes issues. NMSU CHEM DEPT= WORST DEPT @ NMSU! Get it together!!!
Very good class just have to track where you are in the textbook and read the sections before each class, the class is amazing if you can understand what's going on.
She's the best
Well, She is the worst professor I have ever had. She is not helpful, lectures talk about things far related to whats on exams. Tries to act funny by shaking stomach, but she is acutely really RUDE and acts as if she's superior to you. Hard class overall because she just sucks at teaching.
Super rude and makes you feel like an idiot. I often asked for help and she stared and me and would make a joke. Terrible professor.
People. If you don't go to class and don't study, you don't pass the class. It's that simple, and this class is not any different. I went to Dr. Dunlavy for help several times throughout the semester, and ended up with a final grade of 98.7. This class is for weeding people out. Be ready for some work.
This class is rough. She even says in her syllabus that most people won't do well. The tests are very hard but not impossible if you put the time into them. Clicker points are a good buffer so go to class. The homework normally isn't too bad. She is not clear in lectures and is extremely rude when you approach her with a question.
Teaches well, however good luck if you need additional help. She tends to be very rude at times and acts like you're dumb for asking questions in class or during office hours. Takes a long time to give exam feedback. Expect 2-3 hours of homework a week. No quizzes but she does count clicker points for attendance and participation every class.
She somehow manages to make an easy subject very difficult to comprehend, and if you ask questions face to face or in lecture she makes it sound as if you're stupid. Even after one of our exams where all 200+ students did poorly, she yelled at the class on "How easy this exam was".
Well I took her 112 course, and to be honest her course is tough, but she is not too bad a professor. Some of the concepts were tricky and hard to follow with her lectures but overall everything was comprehensible. I passed with a C, but I could blame that on myself for not considering taking the SI course along with it. Advice: Take the SI course.
Dr. Dunlavy is a tough grader. The whole course revolves on attendance, lab, and exams. The exams are the hardest part of the coourse. They are tough and she holds no review sessions beforehand. Overall, pretty interesting course from which I learned a lot from.
She's an okay teacher however if you ask her any questions she acts kind of snarky and sometimes doesn't even answer the question. Also, don't expect your tests to be graded in a timely fashion. She did not give out the grade for the first exam we took and it took her forever to grade other exams.
I was told to avoid her, but after taking both Chem 112 and Chem 217 with her, I'm still not entirely sure why. She's not easy, but not ridiculously hard. She is always going an extra mile to think of real world examples to explain chemistry, which can be funny and entertaining. But beware, she's DESPISES when people talk in class.
Very harsh on the class, very critical. Made insensitive remarks several times toward the students in general (once commenting on how her class materials are cheap they're not and that we shouldn't complain about it). Clicker points help, so go every day and get your points.
She tries to make every concept simple by using weird examples that just end up making the concept even more confusing. She's not very good at explaining during her lectures, i personally wouldn't recommend taking her.
I didn't really have a problem with her! She is very knowledgeable, though her examples don't always make sense. Make sure you take the SI course along with it, it helps a ton. Also, don't expect grades in a timely manner, if ever.
I did not like this professor at all. She was super unorganized and behind on grading. (Entire class never received grades for first exam.) It was difficult to study for exams because she was not clear on what would be covered.
She is an awful teacher! She was always behind on grading our exams and she never put up the syllabus for the class.
Dr. Dunlavy is one of the best professors I've had at NMSU. She explains difficult material very well and uses great examples. Take the SI with this class! It's really helpful!
Attendance is somewhat mandatory, if you have a friend in the class then you can for sure get perfect attendance because she uses clickers. however, you will miss info. I HIGHLY recommend the SI class because it will help you to understand the stuff that Dunlavy flubs. DO NOT TAKE LAB ON WEDNESDAY exams are on thursday you will want time 2 study.
A bad professor. She is hard to hear and understand and expects you to know everything she talks about. Her analogies are horrible because it is difficult to understand what they represent. The lectures are nothing like the homework and the labs have little correlation to what is being taught in class. There is no review for the exams.
She was very unorganized. There was no book. She didn't seem to know what subject she was supposed to be covering.
Dr. Dunlavy is a great professor. She really does her best to make concepts as simple as possible. The homework is very helpful in understanding the content. I didn't have a textbook but I heard it was helpful (at times). You really need to attend class to take notes and participate in clicker points. Chemistry is tough, but she does her best!
Dr. Dunlavy is very knowledgeable when it comes to Chemistry. I thought she was one of the best chemistry professors I had. She was on top of it. Although, she can get a bit sassy when you ask her questions or when you want to speak to her. Take the SI class if you can, it does help a lot.
Dr. Dunlavy is an okay professor. I thought the lectures were slightly boring, but that's coming from a Mech. Engineer haha. She did teach me a lot more chemistry than all of highschool and sometimes does make class fun. Tests are somewhat difficult and has lots of hw. She isn't the best when it comes to help if struggling because the large class.
Be ready to have some weird and kinda difficult exmans even if you study, take notes and do all the homework because it does help!!!!
I loved her, I don't see why so many people had issues. It's chemistry, you'll have to put effort in. But she'll teach you exactly what you need to know and give extremely helpful flowcharts, analogies, and examples. The online homework really helps and the clickers are good for seeing what you know! Take the SI class and it'll be fine!
Attendance is pretty much mandatory because you get points for using your iclicker. Tons of homework online through OWLv2. I liked Dr. Dunlavy, she was very knowledgeable and used real life examples to help you understand the concepts. The exams are HARD though and you need to seriously study.
Dr. Dunlavy is a tough Professor to work with. The lectures are broad and don't prepare you well for the homework which is important. The tests are deceiving and a bit difficult, containing things that were poorly explained in lecture and meant to trick you. Class averages on test were around 60% and her only advice was for the class to try harder.
She doesnt supply any grades supplemental material or anything.
She is an amazing professor. She switches your lower exam grade for your final exam grade (if it is higher) and curves depending on the class average. I dont understand all the hate, as long as you study youll definitelly get an A. The SI class is really helpful
Really good teacher, in my opinion. Super nice and always willing to help if you go to her office hours. Lectures are good and she explains everything very well on the board. Exams were easy to understand, exactly on what she covers in lecture.
I love her!! She is one of my favorite chemistry professors from NMSU. I don't see why so many people dislike her. She replaces your lowest score with your final grade if you do better in your final, she drops homeworks, quizes, exams. Super helpful. Class is an easy A
Dr. Dunlavy the only one who teaches chem 112, but that is okay because she's amazing. She is very understanding and cares a lot about her students, and gives you good feedback. I thought some of the concepts were difficult, but overall she is an amazing professor.
If your struggling with Chem make sure you visit her office hours to turn it around shell take the time to explain things to you. Shes incredible! Just pay attention and try you best. I suggest the SI class she also offers.
This lecture was huge- over 100 people. Content was well explained but she moved very quickly. All of the content flowed and assignments/grades were connected, but this class is no push over.
Do not pass up a chance to take her class, if you are struggling TAKE THE SI COURSE IT WILL SAVE YOU! Exams are not bad when youve seen practice exams in SI. If you cant it just visit her office hours and come with questions you have based on the material. Shes amazing and will do anything to help you.
Dr. Dunlavy was the first chemistry professor I took that actually made me enjoy learning about chemistry. Her lectures are vivid and it made the hour go by very quickly. This class is not an easy A so make sure to study, but she definitely explains the subject matter in a way that is easy to understand and study for.
Shes rude and unsympathetic. didnt learn a thing from her, basically had to teach myself
Chemistry is a difficult subject therefore you must study and truly understand the material. Dunlavy was an okay/good teacher she wasn't bad but she wasn't omg wonderful but other students mentioned she was a better professor than the other available for chem 111. As long as you study for the exams and attend lecture you will pass.
Dr. Dunlavy's class is not easy, but neither is any chemistry class. She prepares you for what is to come in your upper divisions. She genuinely cares so much about her students and works hard to help them grasp difficult concepts. Be ready to study harder than you ever have had to but you'll have her in your corner to help you through it.
Chemistry is always a hard subject to teach but she does the best she can. She knows a lot about the material and cares if students understand the material. She sometimes gets carried away sometimes but generally explains topics well. She also may go reallyyy fast sometimes so try to keep up!
By far the best chemistry professor you will have through college. The way she teaches makes college a great time. The class itself is difficult, but the way she teaches makes the class much easier. Dr. Dunlavy is always willing to help you and is very understanding, especially through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Professor Dunlavy is willing to help you out if you really try. She does give a lot of homework so definitely don't do it the night before or you'll probably not finish. Also she does use clickers for participation so you do need to go to class. And for the love of everything you hold dear STUDY FOR THE EXAMS. They only get progressively harder.
Lot's of material, memorizing.
Dr. Dunlavy is a tough professor to deal with. Her tests have lots of word trickery, and her Chem101 (participation app like clicker) questions... she hardly gives any time to complete. I would have rather read the book during lecture, and ironically, I think I would've learned chemistry better that way. RUN AWAY.
I'm sorry to say this, but this professor has to be one of the worst I have had. I am a Junior and I cannot stress how stressful her class was. She was not helpful when we asked her to help us. She expected us to know everything. She ignored our questions and would make threats about not allowing comments during her zoom meetings. It's a no for me.
After reading previous ratings it seems apparent that Dr. Dunlavy is better at pre-covid teaching rather than adapting to the difficult nature of online learning. During class I can tell she means well, however her pride and refusal to acknowledge hardships zoom learning presents seems detrimental to the understanding of her students.
Shes selfish and rude and doesnt care for others. She needs to realize just because shes the professor and knows these Doesnt mean well know it off the bat. Wishing she could be more understanding
Professor Dunlavy seems to be a professor that was "ok" before the classes went into the online platform. If you take this class you better prepare yourself to have to teach yourself EVERYTHING. He lectures are extremely ineffective, and the online homework that she assigns is completely different from the test. Does not answer questions directctly
Dunlavy is not a good online professor. That is all I can speak for. She does not give context to the subjects she is covering in lectures, instead jumping into each as if she is professing to people who already understand chemistry. I learn more from the online homework than from her lectures. This is from someone who was previously straight A.
this class seems to be a lot harder online, she rushes into lectures and not all students fully understand chem yet. most of your grade comes from the tests, homework is not weighted. hw is tedious and the tests have nothing to do with the hw. students are met with resistance when issues are brought up. you have to teach yourself, on your own.
If you work hard you can get an A. People rate her low because their work ethic is low.
She's the definition of "OK but not ideal" teacher. She is very hard! so expect to work. The exams are almost impossible and they are a high percentage of the grade, so dont slack off! u gotta study the stuff after every class! its really hard but DoAble if you are driven. Personally she is the hardest teacher ive ever had. Really nice person tho
Here's the grading weight from Canvas: Att and Part: 5% HW: 0% Half Exam: 6.8% Exams: 53.2% Lab: 20% HW 6 wk: 15% The half exam is the first exam you take in this class. This course made me stress way more than my other classes. I'll be glad to put it behind me. I now have a profound hatred of Chemistry, I'm certain thanks to this class.
I was a straight A student until this class. I would compare this class to something more like a History class, not heavy on calculations, just "who was this dead guy who discovered this thing" and... just memorization, not really critical thinking. SHE WOULDN'T USE A WRITING PAD all semester, so her handwriting was hard to read. HATED THIS CLASS!
Dr. Dunlavy doesn't curve. If you know a prof doesn't curve, just find one that does. This Professor was just... awful. Her exams were steaming piles of garbage. No matter what you do, she'll give you a B. Students who get A's in Dunlavy's class are unicorns.
Dr. Dunlavy doesn't curve at all. What I really think needs to change is the way the clicker-type questions are asked during classes. These should not be for credit, IMO. Rather than learning the material, we were distracted by them, and she left little time to complete them.
Run away. Turn around and forget youve ever even thought of taking a class with her. She does not explain, she just goes trough the material, and if you ask and want her to explain deeper she come out with Im sorry I have to continue, theres a tutoring center if you want. Terrible, terrible professor, be ready to google everything.
She doesn't explain material at all. When it comes to exams, she will not tell you what is on them or give a study guide "it is your job as a student to study". Anything she lectures on can be on an exam so you just have to review EVERYTHING. I would not recommend her if the course is taught by someone else.
Almost every time a question was asked it was straight up ignored or blown of with a side comment. She seems to care more about clicking through slides on a power point than striving for success of her students. I am a very good student who has never had below an A grade until I took this course. If you don't know CHEM II by heart, do not take.
Dr. Dunlavy is an okay professor. Her lectures can be a lot and there is a lot of extra stuff you need to buy for the class. You really need to make sure you study and do the homework in order to pass the class.
She really isn't an effective instructor. I find that I must do most of the coursework myself.
Yeah work ethic definitely does matter but straight up she is not a good professor. Assigns way too much homework that doesn't even count; you'll pass or fail the class solely based on exam grades. Lectures can be quite overwhelming as she can do more than one section and doesn't answer questions.
She doesn't help at all. Like at all. Sometimes she goes off topic, or when she explains something how to solve something she goes into never goes step by step.
I typically don't do bad in my classes, but since early on in the semester I knew this class was definitely going to be one that I'd have to teach myself. She's impatient with student's questions and comments. You have to read her tests carefully and she definitely gives a ton of HW. Definitely pay attention if you take her, she goes at her pace.
Her class is difficult itself but she makes it more difficult. She goes very fast and she doesnt explain things very well. I found it quite confusing I had to teach myself most of the material
Terrible professor. Our first exam was basically a history exam. Im an EE major that is very much not important for me. I stopped going to the class at some point and taught myself and saw literal improvement. Shes made a racist comment before too. Every class grade average was about 60 or lower. She refuses to listen to requests for exam preps.
Dr Dunlavy is the worst professor at NMSU. I have never had trouble in a class before (I put in due work and study often) this. She is very rude and condescending. Your best bet in her class is to skip lecture all together and learn the material on your own. I saw significant improvement in my grades when I ignored her teaching and taught myself!
Quite literally one of the worst teachers I've ever had, my 10th grade chem teacher from high school was more effective at teaching material! An absolute joke of a class, the emphasis is on incredibly obscure areas of the content, and this translates to the tests. Meaning that you will surely forget most of the concept questions! Avoid this class.
She does not know how to explain the subject well to students and sometimes ignores students that raise their hands for questions. Always reminding students to drop the class, chem 101 are participation points 5% and homework as well15%. There 5 exams: half exam 6.8% and other exams 13.3%.
Terrible professor. Do nottttttttt take her. Take Ramesh instead
Dr. Dunlavy is a very strange and interesting character. Not the worst professor ive had but not the best.
Not a good professor, right from the start she doesn't encourage you to take her class and it is very difficult but a good professor should be proud of their class and feel competent to teach and help everyone learn and pass. She goes very fast and does not explain anything, just reads off powerpoint
Teaching was out of date, and off topic.Poor at elaborating and lots of memorization needed.
Class is only based off exams and the items on the test to not correspond to the lecture material
She takes forever to grade, gives 5 exams, snorts every 30 seconds, breaks the projector every day, rushes over every topic, cannot do simple addition, and teaches literally nothing.
From the start I knew I was going to have to teach myself. She never cares to answer questions. And if she does, she just goes off on a tangent. I've heard multiple people have had to retake the class because she's so horrible at explaining concepts. All she cared about is reading off her slides. Her snort is annoying. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
The class itself isn't hard, the homework and participation are easy to understand and complete with a good grade. However, the exams are hard, mainly because not everyone grasps the concepts because she doesn't explain the material well nor does she reiterate the material learned effectively. Study before exams and you'll pass the class.
Not the greatest profesor. Lectures were quite boring and full of unnecessary information. Wouldn't recommend
This professor is to smart and doesn't know how to teach very well.
She should have been fired or suspended years ago however she still remains as a professor. In her most recent semester she has been relieved of teaching all but one class and has decided to take this out on her students. She is a living breathing nightmare fueled by the hate that not even her cats love her.
Dr. Dunlavy is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't explain the material, goes off topic whenever she speaks, doesn't answer questions doesn't teach what she tests on. Your grade is mostly exams which are all based on material that is not taught in class or in the textbook. She is a tenured professor but should not be teaching students.
This is the worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't answer questions, goes off on unrelated tangents wasting time, criticizes herself in the middle of lecture making everyone uncomfortable. I only started understanding the class by ignoring her teaching and teaching myself, going on youtube and learning from other professors and their content.
Being in class matters there are in class only assignments. Sometimes the topics were hard to understand but you can tell she is trying to help you understand and she will answer questions and re-explain things if you ask. I passed both gen chem 1 and 2 with her because she was the only option. Exams are all multiple choice so that was easier.
This professor is actually great despite all these negative reviews. If you actually pay attention and ask questions, you'll learn a lot in this class. She's one of my favorite professors and although she is a character she's very caring and wants her students to succeed.
lecture and office hours not helpful
It can be very hard to keep up with her and her lecture handouts. Not very good at explaining the material . I would say your better of teaching yourself and going to TA office hours.
The lectures could be very disorganized at times, but I feel overall Dr. Dunlavy did a good job of teaching this course. Gen Chem II is a very hard class, and the exams are most of the overall grade, but she is very helpful and willing to provide assistance if needed. If you really pay attention to everything she teaches, you can pass.
Lectures can be disorganized and exams often feel like they test heavily on concepts rather than math which is what the lectures are typically focused on, making exams somewhat difficult to prepare for. However, Dr. Dunvlavy is very energetic and makes the lectures easy to sit through.
To be completely honest her lectures were very messy and unorganized. It is very hard to understand what is going on and I have never struggled so much with a chemistry class until now. Her exams are extremely hard and she does not give any type of exam keys to help us at all.
Her overall rating pretty much says it all. She's a cool person, but her teaching and grading are not good. Exams are 60% of your grade and are very hard. Do not recommend it. You mighttt have a chance if you're good at math and can understand new concepts quickly like in a day.
Just don't take this course with her. Nice person, goes too fast in lectures.
no organized at all
Great professor. Very helpful, and cares about her students and how they do if you communicate with her. If you don't go to class it will be difficult to learn the material.
Lectures can be disorganized, but engaging with the material and using resources like Unstuckstudy for study prep helped me pass this challenging course. Definitely attend office hours if you need extra support.
Honestly, to all the bozos complaining they got a C or less maybe, like, take initiative for your own educational growth. I graduated from Cleveland with a 2.75 GPA. Barely got into NMSU and am now a Bio major with a 3.6 GPA. I had to start in simple math and everything. I came to college with 0 chem knowledge and just locked in. Be your own hero.
This class is not impossible. If you show up to every class and do the homework that align with the lectures everything will make sense. The only thing tough about this class is that exams are 60% of your grade so you need to do well on them. As long as you keep up with the work and get help when you need it, an A is possible for anyone.
I definitely could've done better in this class by putting in more work on my end. When she lectures it's sometimes confusing sometimes easy to understand. I learned better by doing notes on the posted slides outside of class and teaching myself the material. Nice person overall, just her teaching methods didn't work for me, and DO THE HOMEWORK.
Honestly not as bad as expected. The worst of it is the 4.5 exams and disorganized lecture. The many exams suck but help your grade and she will try to grade it so you can get the highest score possible. Unless you really know chem make sure to participate and self study and its not the worst to at least pass.
This professor is incredibly disorganized. Her lectures often feel half-finished because she spends too much time on topics that don't matter or she goes on unrelated tangents. The homework is easy but doesn't do much to prepare me for exams. Very few resources given on exams, lots of memorization expected. Lots of in class assignments… on paper.
Dr. Dunlavy is a great professor, she makes sure you know what you're doing and learning, and she holds you accountable. She really cares about her students, and wants everyone to succeed in her class, and other classes later on. There is a book tied to this course, but you really don't need it. Pay attention in lecture and you'll be fine.
I had to take this class twice because the professor assumed we knew a lot and we didn't. she also was not very kind when answering questions. probably the worst class I've ever had.
Disorganized lectures. Focuses on things in class that aren't even on the tests. Doesn't allow notecards or provide any materials for the exams like the other professors do. She was rude to me when I asked questions outside of class. Skip this prof, take it in the summer or take Ramesh.
Everything was exam based. The exams were somewhat difficult. Office hours would sometimes help, but often I would feel more confused afterwards.
VERY tough exams. Start studying as early as you can. She's very helpful and friendly if you meet with her individually, but her lectures are not helpful, however, she takes attendance. She has an insane curve at the end of the semester. You can usually expect like a letter grade higher than what you are at.
Dr. Dunlavy is very nice and always ready to help. The class itself is not hard, as long as you go over the handouts she gives and textbook. The downside is that she rushes through the lectures, because during them she gets distracted and gives information we don't even need. Overall, she is good professor, but be ready to read a lot.
Every time there is an exam I pray there is a tragedy in the chem building so the exam is canceled. There is not much room for error in the course. She is helpful during office hours but only if you know exactly what you need help on. Do not think just because you are smart you will pass. The thought of her brings me to tears. Inshallah I will pass
There are 4 midterms and a final that make up the majority of your grade (Class avg
Dunlavy is a good professor and good about being available for office hours and she's always been helpful in those. However this class is a hellhole because of the material, tests and labs. There is no reason the tests should be as hard as they are.
I love her lectures but you do need to be paying attention since she doesn't exactly follow the book. She's super helpful in office hours but you do need to give her something to work with. She expects you to put in some studying and work outside of class (which ppl struggle with). She wants you to learn the material not just pass the class.
Dr. Dunlavy has very interesting lectures where she spends more time making bad jokes than making sure people understand what she's talking about. The exams are very difficult, out of the four exams my class did not have a single passing average. Good luck!
Do not take this professor; take another one. Attendance is mandatory, as there are five exams, which are incredibly challenging. All your grades are based on your test scores and attendance. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR !!!
Lectures were confusing, full of contradictions, and her analogies made things worse. She was often rude when students asked for help. Grading was inconsistent, and recitation didn't match the lecture. One exam had an average grade of 40%, which she attributed to us "not studying enough." Trust, I studied. TAs were the only good part of the class.
I would rather have a lobotomy than have to take her class again. She is very unprofessional and doesn't understand how to teach.
I would rather poop in my hands and clap than take this class again, very unorganized and does not provide much help for exams. Very passive aggressive whenever you ask her questions both in class and during office hours. Cares more about trying to make abysmal jokes than teaching and makes inappropriate references to lecture material during class.
The exams are the most important thing in this course, but we don't even get a review for them. The lectures are disorganized and she goes off topic frequently. She doesn't seem to like it when you ask questions. Attendance is mandatory. I would recommend self study as much as possible or go to TA office hours. This course made me cry.
Her teaching style sucked. It was confusing and all over the place. Each lecture felt like it did not flow together.
She is the only option for this class but she is not a good professor. She is so all over the place and her snorting drives me insane.
She is not a good professor. Her lectures are all over the place, she makes too many jokes and the exams are incredibly difficult. Not a single class average for the exams was a passing grade and she claimed this was due to us having unreliable studying methods. Trust me, I studied very hard for VARIOUS hours and couldn't get a good grade on a exam
Her email replies are condescending, even including literal wink emoticons (";)") in professional emails to be snarky. She also submits fake low grades when her/her TA's are behind on grading, which, yes, she includes in your midterm grade reports. Also does participation BEFORE class, so you can be on time and still not get full points. AVOID.
