I can't stand this professor. The class was a 6 week summer BIO 181 section and students were instructed to never speak to the professor; only TA's. Additionally, she didn't teach anything. Everything was recorded by a MUCH better professor and uploaded to canvas. Wish she didn't teach here at ALL. Such a scam.
Deanna Larson is a horrible professor. According to her Bio on ASU's website this is her first time teaching BIO181. She is a PE teacher. She has no care to help her students in anyway. She sends out announcements almost every day that students CANNOT contact her. She doesn't even use her own lectures and information. By far worst prof. I have had.
First announcement in the online summer section basically told everybody to not email her ever. Someone take away her degree
Couldn't reach out, all course info on quizlet, exams literally the same questions as study guide. Would never take this class again.
eh. do the work, pass it. wouldn't do it again. all answers off quizlet
Good thing is the quiz answers are on quizlet. Bad thing is she doesn't actually teach or let you email her.
She includes a textbook but says it is optional so all learning is through videos of some random ASU professor???
Professor Larson is an awful professor. The first email sent out to the class was NOT TO CONTACT HER. We can only go to the TAs. On top of that she doesn't teach her own lectures. All of her class work is also the exact same as past bio 181 class. She is very rude also. I do not recommend taking this class. What is she doing with all her free time?
Took an online class run by her, never met her in person. EXTREMELY condescending online, sent messages to the class nearly every day threatening to take our credit and even our degrees away. told us never to contact her, and if we did, she would ignore it. Completely out of touch with student lives and un-sympathetic. Also, she can't spell.
This class used a set of great lectures by Dr. David Capco. The three tests in the class made up 70% of the grade, but nearly all of the content was from self-assessment quizzes that are available to take as much as you want. As an online class, there was no interaction with faculty or with other students.
Because of corona, our semester is online and thus far I have spent an upwards of about 30+ hours every week just trying to do the required readings, lectures, quizzes, worksheets and extra credit reviews. I can't say that I recommend this course to anyone, unless they have a lot of prior experience with the material. Teacher was a bit curt.
Took it online, not too bad. Basically do it yourself class. Easy for a schedule, read, worksheet, quiz, review, exam. She gives you a month to complete each module just dont wait last minute bc theres 9-12 assignments per module. Homework is super easy tests are a little challenging. If you rely on a teacher & cant self teach, dont take.
Doesn't have lectures and expects you to learn everything from posted lecture videos. During the lecture, times are only there for you to ask questions. Expects you to pass the 4 exams that are proctored and you have a 1-hour time limit which for me who has test anxiety that just makes me rush and forget my answers easily.
Larson's consistent apathy for her students is unmatched. No option for a P/F grade. Not only does she expect you to learn virtually ALL your information from a pre-recorded lecture, testing is administered via LockDown browser. She doesn't answer questions. Exams consist of 3 accelerated modules compacted into only an hour. Highly DON'T recommend.
- Bio 201 consists of lab and lecture - all necessary info to pass class is prerecorded on canvas - exams use lockdown browser, but are mostly multiple choice so no that bad - lab practicals are fill in blank w/o word bank... - honestly its easy to pass as long as you watch the prerecorded lectures and then do the practice exams she provides.
Was never specific when it came to what would be on exams. She simply told us to study everything. Even if you study the 300 questions that you were given during hw and quizzes, youll only receive a C on the exam. Did not learn a thing from Larson herself.
I had low and mid C's on almost all the exams except one and still ended up with an A. If you do okay on all the exams/practicals, but get 90-100% on all quizzes, worksheets, and extra credit, then you can too get an A. Do ALL the practice test questions (pulled directly from the test question bank) if you want to do well on the exams/practicals.
This course was the root of all of my stress. The professor didn't listen to our concerns and the workload is so heavy (and not reflective of exams). I was so focused on getting a good grade, so I sacrificed the grades of my other classes. You will spend so much time trying to meet deadlines that you won't have time to actually learn the material.
I had to withdraw from this class because the workload was negatively impacting my other classes and life outside of college. It's normal to do an upwards of 1000+ questions per week on the homework. Professor Larson does not listen to student concerns and she could care less about her students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst professor I've had!
This class is ridiculously difficult. The workload is insane you have HW every week almost the lab takes more work than the actual course and to top it all off Dr. Larson does nothing. You attend class and get asked a few clicker questions and waste your time thats it. You have to learn and study all on your with all the extra HW workload its trash
She gives an astronomical amount of homework that is worth so little points for how much work it takes. She barely teaches all the lectures she posts are other professors. Class is just clicker questions or talking about random stuff that doesn't pertain to the class. Take another professor.
Dr. Larson is not the best anatomy teacher to get. If I have to be very honest, this class is literally bad. I do not mean to curse but this professor has no clue about anything and pretend as if she knows what content we are covering. Online meetings are pointless yet she makes it mandatory for points and yet the time used is only for review.
I am a 4.0 student and couldnt achieve a grade over a D. The class AVERAGE was 62!!!! Something is not right.
I currently have an A+ in the class but I speak for everyone when I say this is one of the worst run classes I have ever taken. I would not have gotten through this class without having previously taken an anatomy course. If you're not premed do not take this class I doubt the professor knows anatomy and we have 1000+ questions a week. 0/5
It's not an easy A, that's for sure. There are tons of homework questions per week, seven exams, and lots of reading. There are opportunities for extra credit though. It is based on a point system, not weight system, which I find nice. There are + grades but no - grades, which is also nice. A large chunk of your grade is participation, thankfully.
Lecture videos on canvas. Actual lecture is 5 clicker questions. HW is McGrawHill(500-1000 questions/week). Bad class organization. She's nice & will meet with you but isn't aware that the class is run poorly. Lots of extra credit. Tests are easy if you prepare(gives study guides). The class is survivable, but not worth the $ I'm giving ASU
Arguably the most poorly run and inefficient course I've taken in college thus far. Granted, anatomy and physiology is tough, but Prof. Larson does not make it any easier. Absurd number of exams (4 lecture exams and 3 practicals), assigned learning material consists of prerecorded lectures not made by her. Does not actually teach anything herself.
Terribly structured, awful teacher, and immense amounts of homework each week. Its almost as if she thrives on failing as many students as she can. I didnt fail, but I cannot believe how god awful this professor was. I could go on and on about how awful this class was, but overall shes not worth your money
Worst run class Ive taken. Point based class and theres easy extra credit (36 points available). LOTS of homework like 500-700 questions per week. Online labs in themselves were easy but didnt help with practicals. Larson didnt teach a single piece of information herself, the lecture videos werent even hers. Take this class with someone else
Decent but hw is ridiculous. EVERY 1-2 weeks are a quizlet-like thing with 60-200 questions, a 10 question test, and worksheets with 30 questions but maybe 10 parts each. Awful too that exams are mostly lecture based and not all hw based. At least there is EC every exam and lots of stuff gets dropped including final as an exam
I seriously dont get all the hate surrounding this class. I ended up with a 95%. But if youre not a dedicated science student it might be a bit harder for you. The material is easy but theres a lot. Nonetheless, its not difficult at all to get an A. Dr. Larson is passionate and considerate Doing the hw and studying will definitely get you an A.
Don't take this class unless it's required. The lecture portion of the class isn't too awful if you study for exams and have a Chegg account (the homework is ridiculous). Exams only in person, and iclickers for class. She does offer extra credit study guides so do them. Lab practicals are God awful, but I had a bad lab TA. Good luck.
This class was fine. It took a lot of work to get a good grade. There are 3 online assignments per chapter, totaling 200-ish questions per chapter. I-clicker in class. Lectures did not help me a lot, they were her reading through the powerpoint that is given to you and it aligns with info in the textbook. w/ lab it is challenging but you can do it
She was a great professor. If you pay attention during lecture, she goes over what is important for exams. Her exams are straight forward and do not try trick you. Definitely do the extra credit assignments (15-20 points per exam!). Homework assignments are long, but they're always like that when using connect. I wish I had her bio 202
Worst class I've ever taken! The homework assignments are literally like 80 questions with multiple parts. The lab exams are fill in the blank. STUDY! The lectures are over simplified and do NOT match the exams. Do not take this class unless if it's mandatory. Worst mistake I've ever made in college was taking her class.
Bio 201 has to be the most challenging class I've taken in a very long time—lots of homework, unrealistic expectations related to memorization of material for exams. Had the class been offered in a C session, I could have had more time to study. No Notes are allowed on exams and do the extra credit offered.
It is a lot of work, but you can do it! Quizlet helps if you're crunched for time. Do the extra credit. Test scores do not reflect your grade. I got an A with a 53% on my last test (lol). Read the book! Study guides are simply a guide, not direct questions. IMO, this course is meant to figure out your best studying methods!
Her lectures were super interesting, which is what she tested mostly on. This is a time commitment class but she made it so much more fun and enjoyable.
Prof. Larson really cares about her students and will go the extra effort to help you succeed. There is a LOT of information and reading, but as long as you do the assignments/readings throughout the week and don't cram the tests are a good reflection of the info learned. A lot of extra credit opportunities so do as many as possible.
I was so nervous to take her because of all the bad reviews, she doesn't deserve them. The class is hella hard but Dr. Larson is so funny and caring. There's lots of extra credit opportunities, the practicals are lowkey the hardest part of the class. If you do the homework and read the chapters or even just go to class you'll pass.
So far, the worst class I have taken so far. As an online course, Prof. Larson has been using lecture videos and slides from other professors. Heavily proctored and a lot of rules for exams. Denied my request for scratch paper even with a psychiatrist note as I have a learning disability. A LOT of questions for homework but there is extra credit
This is one of the worst classes I have taken. 3-4 chapters per week, hours worth of worksheets and quizzes between 40-72 questions each. On top of this, SIX proctored exams throughout the course with ridiculous rules that are too easy to break. NO ACCOMODATIONS. She's very clear about that. I'm hardly learning anything with the absurd workload.
Be prepared to spend 50-70 hours a week on homework for a single class that is graded disproportionately and graded by a teacher who does not respect their students. The most insane proctoring requirements and every single assignment in this class will take you hours. I had twenty one assignments in the first week.
Larson made lectures interesting and really showed she cared about her students. The exams are straight forward and to the point and she doesn't include trick questions. She would even bring in candy on test days for every student, she was so sweet. Study a lot and show up and you'll do great. HIGHLY recommend this professor she was so funny/ nice.
Her tests were designed to be different from the original professor yet she didn't make her own videos
Hours of homework, quizzes. You will need the extra credit which also takes hours. Lab doesnt coordinate with what you are learning in lecture it is a subject ahead or behind. Be prepared to spend a lot of time studying but retaining absolutely nothing. If you don't need the credit dont take this class it will make you hate college in its entirety.
Avoid this class if you don't need it or if you have other classes/work. There is an obscene amount of reading (coming from an English major used to reading multiple hundred-page books in a day or two), lectures, and homework throughout each week, but the class moves too fast to truly retain any of it. Study guides do not prepare you for the exams.
I took the compressed online Bio201, which would have been rough regardless of the prof. Tons of content to cover & we were warned at the beginning that it would be hard. I'm lined up to finish with over a 100% however, & I work a >full time job. Study guides, HW, quizzes, & EC are definitely enough to prepare you for exams, if you do your part.
The class is intensive and fast-paced (I counted about 60 assignments for ~8 weeks), but changing professors wouldn't change anything. Make use of the study guides, HW/EC, and extra resources like APR. Do whatever helps you quickly memorize, but make sure you still understand. For proctoring, I recommend having an empty closet or something similar.
Attend lecture! Do the study guides--they literally give you answers for the tests. It is extremely homework heavy so manage your time wisely but it adds a lot of assignments to your grade that way your grade isn't just based on 5 tests--cushions your grade. She throws out 1 exam grade. And offers extra credit! She is a very fun lecturer too!
This course is a very heavy workload so beware but if you do well on the homework and do the extra credit offered, it is very possible to have a good grade. Dr. Larson is a really caring and charismatic professor but does not do much more other than lecture due to the class size. Lot of memorization for this course
I liked that Dr. Larson spent time applying the material to real life. It made it so much easier to study and remember important concepts. She has a very good balance of strict and compassion and leniency. Very fast paced class with lots of understanding and memorizing concepts
This class was challenging but in the best way, I learned so much and how to use excel, math and science all together. This class use DSL which is a new way of teaching in VR and I loved it. I can use the things I learned in many other aspects of life. I would take this course and professor again!
Dr. Larson does a great job of making the lectures interesting and interactive. It is a bit time consuming, but any anatomy class will require a lot memorization. The lab portion was difficult for this reason, but extra credit added a significant buffer. Stay on top of iClickers, homework, and studying and you'll do great!
She is a great lecturer and has a story/mnemonic for everything which helps memorization. There are usually 3-4 worksheets due every 3 weeks, which each require an hour or two, plus extra credit which you def should do. The exams are filled with really simple questions and you can drop one of them. Hated the lab but just make sure you study a LOT.
Regardless of professor, human anatomy/phys is a difficult subject. Larson made every lecture interesting and came up with easy ways to remember difficult concepts. Lab practicals were more difficult than the lecture exams in my opinion, however if you studied, you will be fine. 100% do all the extra credit offered.
I loved professor larson! Her class was definitely not easy and required tons of studying and memorization but she is very understanding and a great teacher, her tests are straight forward and she does not try to trick you. She also gives tons of extra credit which is super helpful and she also allows a drop exam. Overall I loved the class.
There is a lot of homework but it is helpful for the tests. Her lectures are not effective at all, she will spend 30 minutes on 2 slides with typos, but clickers are basically exam questions and there is a lot of extra credit available.
She spends more lecture time sharing anecdotes about her personal life than she does reviewing the course content. Instead of teaching, she reads the powerpoint slides verbatim and expects us to memorize hundreds of terms to be able to pass the exams. Lab and lecture are not aligned.
Professor Larson was rarely involved, it was mainly the TA's that were helping. Lab assignments were very confusing and time consuming and difficult to get help on the discussion board meant to ask questions in. Just be prepared to watch lots of lecture videos.
The professor was not willing to help and did not answer emails at all. The TA's were inaccessible as well, none of my emails were answered throughout the course (yes I used my school email). I spent hours studying, watching the lecture videos, and reading the textbook and still felt unprepared for the exams. She was not flexible or helpful.
This class was roughhhh but Prof. Larson made lectures interesting and engaging! I loved learning the content and learned a lot. In my opinion, the lab was the hardest part and practicals and exams were super hard. Make sure to study LOTS and you will be fine!
Honestly, I was surprised how little Dr. Larson contributed to the course. The only time Larson communicated with the entire class was during course announcements or responding to students with condescending remarks in the discussion posts. I feel like she is not knowledgable enough to teach this course. Exams are easy but labs are hard! Terrible!
While the class is lecture heavy and the labs are very time consuming, I felt that all the extra training in excel helped prepare me for upper division science classes. Prof Larson and the TA's were all VERY helpful working with the class through the new Dreamscape/lab platform. Put in the work and you'll do fine! Great professor, great class!
The main thing about her class is that YOU drive the boat. You have to set aside 3+ hours to do the coursework due to the lectures alone. They're in depth and easy to follow, but are hours of material. Not accounting for notes, studying, taking the exam. The TAs are really responsive in the discussions, and she had multiple office hour times.
Dr. Larson is great in my opinion but the class sucks, not because of the lecture, but because of the lab. The lab is ridiculous with the amount of work they expect you to do. In my opinion, the lecture exams were all very straight forward and really easy. Lab was the worst though and required so much studying for just 1 credit.
For an entry level biology class in a 7.5 week span, the course work is insane. Each unit has 2 mods with their lecture vids and 3 assignments due. The assignments felt so pointless. Some of them are over 30 pages long with weird wording. They take far too long and the dreamscape learns felt like such a waste of time. I didn't learn much here.
Lab will probably tank your grade but lots of extra credit is offered to make it possible to get an A. This class requires a good bit of time.
Dr. Larson is an amazing professor! All the expectations for the class are clearly laid out in the beginning. She does a really good job at combining all components of A&P in the lectures, from memorization to understanding processes to relating it to real-world examples. Big advice is use APR for lab and hone in on MC skills for lecture exams.
Bio 181 is the same for every professor. It does not matter what professor you take this class will teach the same things. This class is statistic heavy, but that is Biology. Biology is statistics. This class teaches the way of Biology, while giving you the POV of a Biologist. Larson is very kind and understanding. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
The lab has absolutely nothing to do with the content of the course and was an insane waste of time, and for some reason the lab was graded when the practice assignments for the lectures were not.
The labs have nothing to do with the lectures, which is annoying because they are the most time consuming aspect of this class. Larson expects you to learn all the exam material from the lectures alone without any additional reinforcement on the information; essentially forcing you to memorize answers rather than actually learn the material.
Larson is a nice person but her BIO 181 class sucks. Say goodbye to whatever small amount of free time you thought you had because the labs (that have nearly nothing to with the lectures) will take up 95% of the course load and will take hours to finish. The other 5% will be studying for exams that are places awkwardly throughout the course.
From what I could see, Professor Larson did virtually nothing to contribute to this course. All lecture videos were of someone else, and TAs graded all assignments. Dreamscape videos were fine, but their assignments were highly confusing, time-consuming & really had a minimal correlation to the lectures. Tests were easy but be prepared to memorize.
So much homework and tests had fill in the blanks. If you study the material for understanding you will do fine. The TAs are amazing at helping you get through the questions you are struggling with.
I believe this is an unpopular opinion, especially in my class for the 2023 fall term (the discord group was ridiculous) The class has ALOT of homework. However, the exams and lab practicals were very straightforward. Just do your part and learn the material, manage your time, and utilize the resources given to you and you will do fine. EC is given
She didn't respond to my messages. Never did the Office hours. Used Dave Capo for the lectures. I fully had to rely on the TAs who were Aweomse, especially Josephine Cudd, to get through this course.
Professor Larson was upfront about what her class was going to look like from the beginning. There are going to be 3 exams, 3 assignments, busy work, and extra credit. The lectures were hard to follow. She was not involved in the class, another instructor taught the lectures. I spent around 6 hours a day doing her classwork, it was a heavy load.
The class is hard and fast-paced, but that's to be expected in any A&P course. Prof Larson is super upfront with expectations and provides a lot of extra credit to help offset some of the difficulty of the exams. You can tell she really wants you to succeed. But if you struggle with recall or memorization, this class will no doubt be a challenge.
Professor Larson's class is by far THE best class I've taken at ASU (I'm a senior). Her lectures are so interesting and she makes everything so much easier to learn. TAs are so inspirational and knowledgeable about the subject. Be aware that this test requires a lot of your time, but it's structured so that you can pass with an A or B if you try.
The amount of busywork is ridiculous. Assignments due the week of each exam total to like 1000 problems, so you don't actually have time to study. Ridiculously difficult, too much stress and not worth it. The only pro is that she offers extra credit.
Very rude and she screamed on me by wrong. Hard class, lab and classes don't correlate at all.
16 modules & 9 lab assignments in 7.5 weeks. 4 quizzes & 3 exams. Quizzes are easy & exact same questions from the (optional) study guides. At least 80% of the exam questions are word-for-word taken from the quizzes, so REVIEW THEM to study. Lectures are LONG (1 - 3 hours per module, varies) & lab assignments took 3-4 hours. Go to Office Hours!
Paired with the lab, this class contains a lot of content. It is not necessarily difficult, but it can be overwhelming. Professor Larson makes it manageable. Not only is she a great teacher, but she is an incredible person. Do your assignments before the due date and take advantage of every extra credit opportunity. Do the provided study guides!
The class isn't hard but it's a lot of info, lots of hours of lecture. All grading done by TA's, and all the lectures are prerecorded videos by Dave Capco. Self checks after modules have the exact same questions as quizzes and exams so study those and you'll be good. Labs have confusing wording and are unrelated to lectures but aren't too bad.
TAKE HER. I LOVED THIS CLASS! She made it easy to learn with interactive lecture notes. Easy tests if you study. Lots of extra credit. I wish she taught 202
Prof Larson had very fun, engaging lectures. She gives you all of the materials to succeed. Make sure you do the extra credit and study the slides thoroughly for tests. Lab is a lot of memorization, so make sure to allocate times towards that. Show up to lectures, study, and you can easily pass! I would really recommend her.
I really loved Professor Larson! Her lectures were engaging and informative. Though the lecture videos were of somebody else, I didn't have a problem with that since they weren't different from the lectures. Exams are straight forward and easy to study for. She offers extra credit that was also a helpful study tool. APR will be your best friend.
No required attendance but there is iClickers participation points. There's a ton of material to cover so the class overall is a 5 difficulty but she is very engaged in making it a positive experience for you so as a teacher she made the class easier. every chapter and every practical have extra credit. 2 quizzes and a test get dropped.
The content is adequately difficult for the course. There are excessively heavy levels of homework. My issue is her Honorlock requirements. You have to do everything short of handing over your social security number, and still she makes the exams so that you can only answer one question at a time and not return to the questions later.
I took both her Bio-181 and Bio-201 classes. Both classes are lecture heavy, none of the lectures are taught by the professor. Bio-181 was fantastic, a lot of lecture but exams are pretty easy. Bio-201 is signifigantly harder. Exams are harder and the sheer amount of lectures and HW assignments is INSANE.Still doable, but A LOT.
For an online course you expect it to be fast pace. This being a developed course they have to many mistakes made to even teach the course properly. You have exams every week and only have 5 days to review the course material. She doesn't teach either. Her class is just overwhelming and flawed that it makes you doubt your ability to learn. AWFUL!
This was by far the worst experience I have ever had in an online college course. It was miserable. Too much homework, too many tests, unclear lectures, poorly crafted program.
Very disorganized class with errors in all tests, assignments and lectures. Full time workers be aware there is an unreasonable amount of filler work with no intellectual gain. Very apathetic and not caring about her students or their lives. As I have done many online classes this one has definitely taken the title of worst class! Good luck
so much reading you need to do lab is imposible
Classmates seem to hate her (skill issue) but I like her. Very present and helpful. Lots of EC and HW but it isn't busy work. Take this class on its own to do well. Grade is based on your ability to study. Learn how to study and do all EC. Everything you need to know is in the textbook. I work 20+ hours, am taking another class, and have over 100%.
The class is a lot of work with tons of information given every lecture. The lab is enough work to be a separate class on its own. Extra credit allowed me to get a good grade though. She is very rude and dismissive if you try to contact her by email.
Lots of info to learn, take this alone if you can. The professor didn't really seem present and a good amount of the pre-recorded lecture videos were not working properly or just overall hard to follow as they were taught by TAs. Had to watch YouTube to supplement. Overall pretty assignment, exam, and quiz heavy. Lots of EC available which helped.
Professor Larson's lectures are actually worth going to. You learn a lot in lectures. It is a hard class but that's anatomy anywhere you go. She offers a lot of extra credit and homework that actually helps you learn the subject. You will need to study a few days before each lecture exam.
A&P is a difficult class no matter who you take. Don't listen to these low ratings. Take this class. Deanna is the best teacher I've had at ASU and made me want to take more anatomy related classes as electives. The content isn't too difficult, just get good at time management. This class is a lot of work but 100% worth it. SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT!
The class is a lot of work but I would still take her class, its a lot of work regardless of the professor its just a lot of content so you have to study! She offers SO MUCH extra credit! Do all the SBS its very helpful.
This class was great, and very manageable. Lots of extra credit and if you go to lecture its near impossible to fail. Professor cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Don't listen to the bad reviews, I would 100% take this class again.
You should avoid taking any of Prof. Larson's classes. She is very rude and dismissive of students and is unapproachable. Bio 181 is essentially a life science statistics course with about 5% of actual biology. Class was a waste of time and money. Def worst "professor" I've had so far.
She makes A&P interesting! Yes the labs can be a bit hard and the HW is A LOT but it helps. At times just doing the hw was enough studying for me for the week. Lots of EC, going to class (iclickers!) is helpful, and the book isn't too depended on. lectures = exams, provides VERY helpful study guides! loved her class!
This class does take a good amount of work, but it is very manegable to get an A if you study, and she offers a TON of extra credit. I mean a TON. Professor is okay, tried to get to know her, but wasn't really given a chance. Overall not a bad class
I liked Dr. Larson! She brought a sense of reality to the tough material in the class. It's an arduous course, meant for pre-healthcare professionals!
Professor Larson is very passionate about what she is teaching, which makes the lectures very engaging. The lab portion of this class is very difficult as are the lecture exams, but if you do all of the homework and extra credits then you can keep your grade up.
office hours (if you want to build a connection or get homework help) is a waste of your time. she is a nonchalant professor, not encouraging, nor supportive. on the bright side the class is well structured!
Awesome person. Follows up with your problems and has been the first person to genuinely want me to succeed. She didn't just say no to my situation but went out of her way to contact the support office and figure the problem out for me.
Our class made a group chat and everybody helped each other through the course. The labs are a pain, they are very time consuming and can be incredibly confusing. Dr. Larson doesn't teach the lectures, the Prof. who does isn't bad. The tests/quizzes are basically the same questions as the self checks so if you study based off those you'll do well.
This class felt more like a statistics class than a biology class.
Larson never taught the class, she had TAs and the lectures were created by someone else, Fairly math heavy and a lot of work all at once. Keeping up with everything was difficult; labs were a serious pain and felt like busywork. The class was so poorly put together that she exempted some work at the end, which was really helpful and appreciated.
Shes okay at teaching, lectures are a bit long and boring (could just post the slides), I dont know why she keeps saying she went to medical school when she does not have a medical license. She does not have an MD or DO. Lecture is easy, the lab portion is super annoying but okay.
*Coming from 3.96 GPA junior who's taken 18 credit semesters before* When you get a quiz every lab and have practicals which are impossible to earn high on you start to think.. Who thinks their subject, anatomy, is deserving of so much of our time? It's tirelessly overexaggerated with this prof. Och1-2,phy1-2,calc 1-2, are all easier. Fix the lab.
Larson is the professor, but Krupps is the one managing A&P. Canvas layout is not organized. This class includes Recorded Lectures by Krupps plus others for Lab material. Be aware that the recorded lectures does not cover all of the reading, so you must read the textbook to get all the information. Reading, worksheets, quizzes, exams, are heavy.
A&P is a lot to learn, especially in a 7-week timeframe. With that comes a lot of quizzes and exams. The course is heavy but Larson and Krupps give their students opportunities to get extra time (they give grace periods) and extra credit (by reading and answering questions, the SB). It is online so it is difficult, you need 30-40 hours to pass.
Took online, got lucky with my TA being super involved/helpful. The structure of the class is straightforward but there's a lot of SB's and McGraw Hill homework. I don't feel that the homework reflected the exams. Expect 2-3 chapters a week, each accompanied by a quiz/SB/1-2 worksheets. Lots of work with unattainable expectations.
This class has terrible expectations for students and no leniency. The 100 questions test (that you can't even backtrack on by the way) was very difficult. Take this class at another college for the whole 15 weeks. For someone that needs to know anatomy in the career world, I feel like I was set up for failure.
They have to be the top 10 worst teachers; Too much work, the teacher doesn't care, and everyone is lost. If you take this class, you are essentially messing up. Don't believe the people who say this class is easy. They want you to fail.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever taken at ASU. If you want to not have a social life and spend hours focusing on one class, take this one. The exams are 77 questions in 75 minutes, the lab is harder than the actual class. No curves on tests. Definitely take this class at poly or downtown campus.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS >:(
she never taught the class, just dictates on canvas instead of actually answering Qs. TA said they discourage us posting work when asking Q. TAs really struggle to help in officehrs since they're not trying to give out answer. no feedback on assignments even after emailing. she told us do not repeatedly ask Q's. Definitely felt discouraged to learn
The class is tough, so don't go into this class thinking it is easy. The professor is AMAZING; she is willing to help you & TAs are ready to help. The lab portion is the actual rigid portion. Yes, there is a lot of HW, but it is because there is a lot of material. If you put in the work, and do all the extra credit, & ask for help, you will be fine
I don't understand why the reviews are so negative! The lectures were very interesting and she does a great job breaking the content down. Obviously, being a pre-medicine class, A&P is going to be difficult no matter who you take it with, but Larson's class is well structured and very possible to pass. Just don't fall behind, because it is a lot!
I am SHOCKED people submit so many bad reviews. It seems to happen with any hard Science class. She is super nice and a great teacher. As in if you pay attention and give a good amount of effort you can ACTUALLY get an A. Professor Larson communicates information clearly and sharply. It is very possible to pick up on.
I took Professor Larson's BIO 201 during one of the hardest transitions of my life at 16 years old. She has the kindest heart and was always available to talk to for personal and academic reasons. Instead of telling me I couldn't succeed, she made me believe I was capable. I've never felt so cared for by a teacher before.
this class is not as hard as people paint it out to be, but it is A LOT of work. I took this along with two other science classes and I still survived so you can too. the only reason you should go to lecture is for iclicker points, otherwise it doesn't help that much. She gives a lot of extra credit and is very understanding.
Dr. Larson was a very hard teacher, but I think her teaching style worked. Her class felt like I was in a military boot camp. She assigns a lot of questions for homework which kinda forces you to study, and offered a lot of prep for exams. She had really high expectations, but if you pretend you're training for a BIO201 war, you will learn a lot.
I took BIO 181 before they revamped the course, and I adore Dr Larson. She is so funny and sassy, and she cares about her students. The learning curve is difficult for those like myself who had never used excel before, but they have a ton of video resources and office hours daily to assist. You have to put the work in and you can earn an A!
Dr. Larson is an excellent professor. Her study guides are clear, and exams follow them closely. She posts helpful supplemental videos that align with the study guide, making studying straightforward. She's an engaging lecturer and passionate about the material. The McGraw Hill assignments are a bit annoying, but the extra credit helps a lot.
Professor Larson does not understand why she has such bad reviews on RMP despite having such a passive aggressive attitude. This class is not difficult though.
The content is easy and there's a lot of extra credit, but the class and lab is so much useless busy work. Larson herself is a whatever lecturer, but the amount of comments she made about her husband's and children's race made me uncomfortable. Also, I'm not sure why she tries to come off as a doctor when she's not? She's ok but kinda weirds me out
She is such a sweety and really sets you up well to succeed in this class. It has a lot of content, but as to be expected with any A&P course. The posted study guides are very helpful, and do ALL EC so you can bomb the lab practicals. Exams are easy and the first two units are practically review if you have taken intro bio and chem.
Professor Larson makes the tough material engaging. While the class workload is heavy, with unstuckstudy and lots of extra credit, it's very manageable to get an A. Definitely attend lectures - they're essential for exam prep.
I was trying to take this class for Bio 181 it's giving more of STATISTICS. Like lady if you wanted to teach Statistics, change to that subject.
The class is all over the place. It's basically a statistics class, and chemistry, and molecular biology, and cell biology, and genetics, and… If a college course was defined in the DSM, this one would be the definition of ADHD. It's passable, but it's not built to retain information. And it pretty much requires that you sacrifice any social life.
This professor doesn't do anything for her class. Work is due 3 times a week leaving no time to study the amount we should. The lectures are prerecorded videos of other people, the TA's do the grading.
Her passive aggressive attitude to everything is the definition of toxic. She doesn't engage with her class, just sends emails with threatening tones. Her TAs run the course, and even that isn't consistent. This is more of a statistics class under the guise of scientific data, but little to nothing about the core of biology. Disappointed.
Doesn't want peers to work together, yet stated working with peers is encouraged. Very unclear and minimal instructions on assignments, very excel-heavy. So much info at once without in-depth detail or explanations, too much to retain without doing your own research.
This class and how the professor structures it are truly horrible. There is mass amounts of information dumped on you with no proper study guides or anything provided for exams. You can't use any notes on exams, can't read questions out loud to yourself or anything like that. The only saving grace is extra cred, but even that is barely worth it.
TA's are very good, but I'm not paying to take a class from a TA. 3-4 hours per day minimum is my recommendation. Digit learning is an excellent tool to see how questions will be asked on tests. Utilize some form of social media to communicate with classmates. There will be questions you don't have time to wait for TA response.
I'm in her class right now and I still don't know whether or not I like her. I like that her class is structured. I do not like that it seems like she tries to penalize and take points away from her students every chance she can get. On exams if you don't bubble in your version she takes a bunch of points off which kinda seems unfair but whatever
I'm currently enrolled so my review might change. The first exam wasn't impossible; got a B, went to lectures, did hws + SB (ExtraCred), and APR. The homework is the most important part of this course for good reason. The labs have been the hardest part because of the amount of terms/materials. Prof's examples make me remember/recall the info.
Currently 2 weeks out from finishing this course. The structure and style of this class deserves praise. We are provided with a ton of resources and study information. However, this class requires the hours of a part time job. The amount of information you need to learn for 6 proctured exams is excessive. Get ready to memorize 100 muscles.
Had her last semester and I think it's a little funny her reviews are so terrible, however I don't think she honestly deserves this low of a rating. Her exams are incredibly straightforward (some Q's are from SB) homeworks are excessive at times, but light compared to 202. Lab portion can be overkill, but practicals are not as hard as people say.
Professor Larson was an awesome professor. While this class in general is hard for some, she was caring and offered MANY opportunities for extra credit.
I get why people can say she is not a great professor, but do not take this class if you're not interested or will not put in work. Lab portion is basically another 3 hour lecture and very memorization heavy, while the lecture is more physiology and concept heavy. This class is do-able with effort, you need to be present in order to succeed!
Avoid this class! The instructor lacks knowledge of the subject and proper communication with students leading to poor instruction and difficult exams. 6 exams (100 questions each) and 2 lab practicals (50 questions each). Be prepared to learn 3-4 textbook chapters per exam in just under two weeks and rely on extra credit, as you'll likely need it!
She doesn't even teach? I don't understand how that's allowed. We just do Digit modules that she didn't even create. Even if you have a medical emergency and show proof, she isn't understanding or helpful about it.
If you want any semblance of a work-life balance, DO NOT take her class. She assigns 3-4 homework assignments per week, each one taking hours to complete. The workload is geared towards freshmen who have no extracurriculars and very few classes. You will only get a good grade if you sacrifice your free time/other responsibilities.
This class is hard. However, it's going to be difficult no matter what teacher you have. You might as well have a teacher that gives A LOT of extra credit. There are 4 exams (multiple choice,100 points) and 2 practicals (fill in the blank, 50 points). I recommend you take an easy class along with this. Online labs and dissections are very easy.
Mama Deanna is my queen but damn her class is difficult. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class alone with no science classes. The homeworks take hours, the exams are difficult and lab practicals are downright evil. She is still an icon though and I will always love her! I would recommend the class but probably best to wait until senior year.
Not the most lenient professor but there are SO many extra credit opportunities that it makes up for it. If you study and do all the readings/homework, the exams are laughably easy. A & P will be a hard class no matter which professor you get but her slides are really helpful and contain all the information that will be on exams.
Honest review- I'm not going to lie this professor is not bad as what every one else is saying her ratings are kind of dramatic but she really isn't that bad of a professor the class is just pretty hard she gives out a lot extra credit which is pretty convenient if you were to get a zero on a test you could still get an A However the lab is bad
This is a continuation from the review below but focusing on the lab the lab is actually incredibly bad though I mean we are technically doing nothing for three hours without Wi-fi because connection sucks there it's really disorganize and hard to know what you're studying and trying to learn for the lab quiz which most of the difficulty is from
Okay from a non biased standpoint, all the one star reviews complaining about how hard this class is is hilarious to me. It's definitely a challenging course, but if you're a STEM major, what did you expect? She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. The course difficulty isn't really her fault.
The class content is really not that bad. If you're a freshmen it may be a harder class but as an upperclassmen the class itself was kind of a joke. Larson just isn't my favorite, she seems to think very highly of herself. SHE IS NOT AN MD. Many kids think this. She is not. She lies by omitting the truth here making you think she is. Weird.
A lot of people on here are dramatic with how bad she is, it is a tougher science class but I struggled with content but she is assessable via office hours pretty often. She has weekly EC that helps cushion your grade a lot. The lab portion of the class is more difficult but she as a teacher isn't all that horrible.
I would take her again because she is a good lecturer but I would not take BIO 201 ever again under any circumstances. This class requires you have no life outside of school. In order to do well, you must study minimum 25 hours a week. That is not normal for an undergrad class. She is nice and good at her job but just don't take this class trust me
Professor Larson had great analogies. I would recommend taking this course with her. Be mentally present during lectures (listen and absorb) and try to relate the information to mnemonics, personal stories, and how its used in the medical field. Do the homework at least twice and rewrite your notes multiple times before an exam in order to succeed.
The lab is more difficult than the actual lecture portion imo. Professor Larson was great at relaying the lecture material and engaged with us in class by asking us clarifying questions and being attentive to our mood during the lectures (she'd let us out early when the class stopped engaging so often). Review study guides, hw's, and EC to do well.
Take 201/202 in your senior year if possible. It's the only science heavy course and taken alone with other extra circulars. The material is easier (especially the physiology) to grasp with background knowledge and the lab is basically the battle you face. Prof Larson did great in her explanations and I would recommend taking her again.
This is a tough class, but it is very doable to get an A even without getting A's or B's on exams (as long as you do all the extra credit and homework). I strongly advise to read the chapters and watch lectures (as they're very surface level). Every week we had a due date with a 12 hr grace period which was helpful. At home dissections were cool!!
Prof Larson is a great lecturer and I definitely learned a lot. She does assign a lot of homework and the class is hard, but that should be expected of pre-health students who want to go on to operate on other people. Everyone here is just extremely dramatic. She even offers a ton of extra credit to counterbalance the workload! Would take again.
I really liked her. I took 25 credits this semester so the reason my grade is so low is that I just did not have time to study but I bet if you take this class alone or with only 1 other science course you should do just fine as she is super sweet and cares about your success. She is sassy but she is awesome.
Personally she really isn't that bad she's actually a good teacher and very generous when it comes to grading the test however I think all these reviews are toward the labs which I don't blame them because the lab is actually pretty stupid the way it's structured and graded but other than that she's actually not that bad of a professor very caring
Idk why her rating on here is so low. Prof. Larson is one of my favorite instructors I've ever had, you can tell she cares a lot about what she's teaching and that her students understand it. Lots of homework but it's really helpful for the exams. The worst part is the lab but that's not her fault.
Dr. Larson taught this course well, and I learned a lot. The tests are reasonable for the material and not too difficult. The lab was also interesting, and the practicals were not very difficult. I would recommend Dr. Larson for BIO 201.
In my opinion, she isn't that bad. She's actually a good teacher and tends to be generous when grading tests. However, I understand why some reviews focus on the labs, which I agree can be poorly structured and graded. Aside from that, she's not a bad professor at all—she genuinely cares about her students.
She was nice. Ok class. Lots of work and not much guidance or preparation on the material. Very heavy workload so be prepared for that and being on your own through it all. I had to withdraw due to an unexpected medical emergency, but I would probably take her again with the right mindset.
Did all 50 points of extra credit but that was still not enough to save my grade. This class would've been better if I had a good lab TA. I got stuck many times in a corner with nowhere to go for help because my TA was not with it. I think Larson herself does the best she can but she does assign an insane amount of work. Don't rely on extra credit.
Not a terrible class if you can manage your time!!! The class is run by TAs, which can be frustrating, but as long as you use the discussion boards and focus on the digit lectures and practice tests, you will pass all the exams. Excel assignments are easy once you learn the formulas. Good luck!
I took her class and it was so many exams! Every week I have at least 1 or two exams. Just a very heavy course overall wouldn't take again I'd look for anyone who was better.
Professor was nice and posted in discussion boards often. TAs on her team were understanding and tried their best to work with students and their deadlines. The deadlines were incredibly flexible. The software used for homework assignments was confusing at times, but it allowed for more practice since Digit lets you to retake prior assignments.
Awful. If you can avoid taking this class DO. Honestly one of the worst experiences of my life, I took it last spring and the teacher says "I hate making students fill in notes" and proceeds to give us slide shows from 50-100 slides with fill in notes, in addition to 2.5 hour long do it your self lectures. The class is all memorization.
It feels like you're drowning throughout the whole class. There's zero empathy or understanding from the professor and same with the TAs it's like they want you to fail. I honestly don't even know how I passed. Avoid at all costs if you can, and if you can't I recommend only taking this one class and if possible quitting your job lol
Any reviews here that take shots at her as a professor aren't genuine. *SHE'S* great, it's the course that's the issue. Don't go into this expecting to actually retain the material - you won't have enough time for that in only 7 weeks. Cram so you can pass, then plan to revisit the course on your Canvas in the future so you can *actually* learn.
class is alright, but larson is a terrible lecturer. lies about being an MD, and wont stop talking about her personal life mid-lecture. actually pmo. aside from that, the class is very interesting
Took the 6 week BIO 201 course. Extremely difficult with weekly tests on the content that was just learned. Memorization of full anatomy and TA's grade harshly on spelling for naming.
Larson is on a crazy power trip for some reason. She assigns a ridiculous amount of busy work and calls it hw, and is not lenient at all. If you miss any assignment for any reason, you will not be able to make it up and will have to rely on her tedious time consuming unhelpful extra credit. Oh and she's NOT an MD like she poses to be.
I do not know why people say she is a bad professor. To be completely honest she was the best professor I had at ASU. I did not know what to expect difficulty wise going into this class and her lectures and assignments helped a lot with exams. Anatomy is a hard class in general but she was engaging with the class and made the class fun.
her class gives a lot of busy work its insane. genuinely you need to know how to study on your own to get good grades since there is sooo much information to retain. She also says she is an MD she is not. She has not went to medical school so don't be fooled.
She spends the first week trying to weed kids out from the class instead of teaching anything. Unless you have 2-3 hours every single day to devote solely to this class don't take it. Tons of busy work that takes forever and isn't even helpful for studying. Would not recommend this class to my worst enemy.
This is a difficult class that requires a significant amount of time. The heavy workload allows the learner to work through the material multiple times and the homework, quizzes and labs allow you to "rack up points" to offset the difficult exams. This is a class geared towards people going into graduate studies in health. It should be hard.
People are way too hard on her when she repeatedly says she wishes this course could be at a slower pace. Its human anatomy in 7.5 weeks - it won't feel nice. But it's not impossible to get an A or just pass with all the extra credit she offers. STUDY the material, not just memorize it, and understand it so the exams come easily. You'll be okay
I thought Professor Larson's lectures were very involved in real medical issues, and she was great at lecturing. I can see how people hate labs, as it is time-consuming and only covers some material, with the rest to be studied independently. She's strict on quizzes/tests, but that makes sense as most of her students are in the medical route.
Anatomy is already a hard topic, but she does an amazing job teaching. You're going to have to teach yourself because you need to practice to succeed. Mod 3: Muscles is definitely the hardest exam and practical you'll ever have. I got a C+ purely because I didn't take it seriously until the end. You def could get higher if you lock in since day 1.
Overall professor is fine. Lecture exams are not as hard as practicals. Lab practicals are brutal regardless if you study, 55 fill in the blank questions. Attendance wasn't mandatory, I only went to class to actually take the tests. I averaged a D on practicals and tests and got a 82% in the class. Do all extra credit, it saved my grade.
Generous and empathetic professor. Her teaching has tons of real-life scenarios and personal stories. It is a bit too excessive and overpowers the true content of the class. Muscles unit for lab + lectures is super rough due to cadevar + lots of prior knowledge. Lots of EC. Don't be misled by her "MD/DO" - she has a special Master's from med school
I came into this class scared because of her reviews, but in my 2.5 years at ASU Dr L is the most qualified and passionate professor I've had. She is strict but only because her students are future medical professionals which I completely agree with. Exams 1 and 4 were the easiest and 2 and 3 hardest, but if you put in the work you can succeed.
