I had no idea what to expect when taking this course with her since she wasn't on here - while for all my other profs were. But boy, I lucked out with Deanna! She's so nice and engaging. A bit geeky, but it's cute! Her "hint, hint" in class is helpful for knowing what'll be on exams! Got a 91% on midterm! That's a good sign. I recommend her!
There are profs who care about what they teach and those who do not. Deanna LOVES her field and teaches it in an enthusiastic and attention drawing way. She has a good sense of humour too, which always helps. Any class with Deanna is a great class.
I took this very hard class last summer and thanks to Deanna's help I was able to complete this class. She is funny, helpful, and cares about students success! I recommend taking any class with her, lovely personality
This teacher is seriously my favourite one! She deserves so much recognition and could teach alot of other profs how to do their job significantly. Great Great Great teacher!!!! WOW!!
Often off topic. You will find yourself talking about things that have nothing to do with Personality Psych. She often will make fun of groups of people (ex. those with narcissistic personality disorder)as well as the theories she is teaching. Exams are poorly constructed.
I really liked Deanna as a professor. She is energetic (very energetic... you'll see) and funny. The only thing I did not like is that she goes off topic often which makes the classes way longer than they have to be. Other than that, I would recommend her.
Rather annoying and off topic.
wouldn't recommend this prof at all. not only is her teaching style rather annoying, her exams are poorly constructed. I am an A average 4th year student studying criminology and am going into the final exam with a B-. 3 exams worth 30%, 30% & 40%. Don't take the class unless you have to.
she's very energetic and passionate which is great but goes way off topic TOO much-therefore longer class & sometimes materials are being pushed back. Her exams are fair and pretty easy if you studied. Overall nice prof :)
Often VERY off topic, although she is VERY energetic (which keeps the class going). I said MANDATORY to attendance, because if you are not going to study from the textbook you better MEMORIZE all her slides. Quite helpful with questions, replies late to e-mails. Exams are terrible, although she does ask for feedback. Would not recommend.
She is a horrible prof, doesn't reply to emails, is very condescending and rude when talking to students, and has an unnecessarily hard class. She also is very slow at marking exams. But she brought us coffee for a 9am final, so that was nice.
The exams were very unfair and this course was much harder than it needed to be. She goes off topic too often and the lectures are very hard to sit through. I don't think she really knows the material. Very annoying. She didn't answer any of my email messages, even though I asked reasonable quetions..
Deanna really is a great prof. She's one of those teachers that is really passionate about her field, and it shows. She has a very strong personality and tends to tell animated stories a lot in class - so be prepared. Her exams are fair, but don't kid yourself- reading the book & going to class is essential - you'll get way more out of it :).
Cannot stand Deanna as a prof. She is knowledgeable about psyc and she is probably a great person outside of teaching but she goes off topic in her lectures so often you can be 30 minutes into a class and she's said nothing about the course material! You can gain more information from reading the textbook than you can from going to her lectures.
Let me start off by saying that Deanna is a very good professor. She knows everything about personality psychology, and her lectures are very interesting. However, her exams are not consistent. I went from a very low mark on one exam, to an extremely high mark on another. You have to know EVERYTHING. A lot of work, but overall a very good prof.
Classes are very long. Prof is always off topic, mainly talking about herself or things going on in her life -this usually takes up a good portion of the time. Tests are difficult. MC are basic and based off textbook content -Short answers are basically impossible to do well on. I do not recommend taking this class with this prof.
I found her classes enjoyable - although she does ramble on and on - and ON in each class by talking about her family or personal experiences. I found her impossible to approach as she responded to one of my emails asking for assistance in an abrasive and condescending tone. Other than that her class was an easy one - and yes, you need the text!
Deanna is a very nice, ENERGETIC and up beat professor, especially for Psyc2001 (Research methods) always in a very good mood and always with high levels of energy, explains all the lectures in a very easy to understand manner and makes it easy for students to learn. Great prof for 2001.
She replies to emails late - if at all- and is extremely condescending and rude. Completely impossible to contact. Her exams are very inconsistent and almost impossible to pass. MEMORIZE her slides and the textbook material. INCREDIBLY harsh grader and takes long to mark assignments and exams.
I couldn't stand sitting in her class hearing her ramble on about her personal life; it honestly takes up at least 50% of the class time. Her lecture slides are just talking points, but they do tell you what you need to learn. Totally condescending in e-mails; don't bother emailing her it will just frustrate you for nothing.
Believe it or not, the personality prof has, wait for it: a big personality. She's really bombastic and funny. Lectures are clear-cut and have no junk-info that you don't need to know. BUT BEWARE: She makes you work for your grades on tests. Have fun but study hard.
Deanna was a pretty good professor in general. Lectures were engaging and interesting. However, when it came to tests, midterms and finals she was difficult. She always asks a lot of tricky and pretty tough questions. To pass her class, get ready to read and study hard. To do well in assignments, I suggest you get the textbook and use it.
Focuses too much time on her personal life. This is a hard enough subject as it is without lectures being filled out by her stories of how smart she is and how much of a 'stats geek' she is. I will say she genuinely cares about teaching, this is obvious and perhaps with time she will be able to calm down and be a good prof but I wouldn't recommend.
She was very nice and tried to make the class interesting for the students. However, I feel like she spent way too much time discussing her personal life, which made it difficult to stay focused on the course material and made the classes unnecessarily long. She also provided almost no info about what would be on the exams. Overall she was alright.
A really great teacher who understands what it's like to be a student. She makes sure what she teaches on her slides are clear and that her homework assignments are clear as well. The amount of homework is reasonable. Shes very energetic, keeps the material interesting and captures your attention.
Professor Whelan always had energy in the lectures, she was able to make coming to class actually interesting, especially with something as boring as research methods. She was very clear and easy to follow, and able to answer many questions. She was a great lecturer and made the content of the class relatable. Testing was fair and assignments easy.
Around 40% of her lecturing time spent going on boring tangents, during which she speaks in an obnoxious, irritable tone VERY late replies to emails too little information about midterm and final (which are tough, by the way) BUT... midterm + final combined worth less than 40% of final grade, assignments easy, so class not hard overall
She uses anecdotes a lot in her lectures. Personally I think it's great because they give you a lot of insight into the field and they make really dry course material a lot more interesting.
I am going to echo many criticisms here. Far too much of her lecture is spent humblebragging & wasting our time. Marking takes far too long. Slides are sparse, making lecture material important, but too much effort is needed to sift through useless garbage. Classes should test knowledge, not patience. I would never take another course from her.
Her lectures are painful to sit through. Brags about herself, snaps at students, doesn't actually teach the material. Was so excited for this class and she made it an expensive nap.
Be prepared to listen to her personal stories. Deanna has a difficult time 'reading the room' and understanding that no one is laughing along with her 'jokes'. It's awkward to sit there and wait for her to talk about textbook material.
Prob the worst prof I've had in my 3 years of uni. The amount of assignments are ridiculous and she is very unclear about what should be expected, the exams are way too long and she overall makes what should be an easy course much harder and more complicated than it should be. Wouldn't recommend.
One of best Profs I've had for research methods & positive psychology! Truly passionate about her work and goes out of her way to help students (as long as they ask for it). Exams can be tough exams but she always makes class super interesting and practical. She does go off tangents often. Limited notes on slides so take extensive notes. Recommend!
I love Deanna she is hilarious and very funny! Her lectures are very interesting and she is very passionate about what she does. She really cares about her students. The only negative thing is that she shares way too many personal stories and a three hour lecture can literally be done in an hour and a half.
Deanna is wonderful! She tends to tell a lot of stories, but I love a good story. EXTREMELY passionate about personality psychology and it comes out in her teaching. She explains the material very clearly, and is very lively. She'll make you break out of your shell. Exams are really clear IF you've studied and understand the material. SO STUDY.
Amazing professor, super enthusiastic, passionate and engaging (some people could see her as over the top.) Truly cares about her students, would recommend talking to her face to face for any clarification or help, she will do all that she can to support you.
The class was enjoyable and the teacher is very funny! Although I enjoyed the class, the prof can be confusing. The test were based off the book and the short answer was extremely hard to do well on. I recommend the class but with a different prof!
I absolutely loved this prof. She gives so much exemples that are so relevant. Would recommend to do the practice questions of the textbook. She captures your attention and wont see the 3 hour lecture go by. I would take the class again and would recommend
Ego maniac. Loves herself a lot. Think she's really great and that everyone in her class should agree.
Deanna honestly kinda rude and gets veeeery off topic quite easily. Going to her classes it's mostly her talking about her life for 60% of it and the rest is actual important test material. I would suggest going to class as she does release assignments during class time. However she's pretty lenient with her grading so she's not all bad.
she is very friendly and positive! (you can tell shes a positive psychologist) She makes the class go by quickly and the midterm was pretty easy if you study! Content is easy to understand but she gives SO many assignments (5 in total plus the two labs)- still easy to do well if you put in effort
I took her PSYC 2001 course and liked her so much I switched my whole schedule to get into her PSYC 2002 course! She gives tons of super helpful examples, she also gives a lot of opportunities to do your best, if you do not do terribly well on 1 or 2 assessments its not the end of the world. Great prof one of my favourites at Carleton!
The grading scheme used breaks up your marks into many smaller assignments, as a cushion for your grades, and to check your progress. She brings an energy to the classroom and has many relevant examples which can improve your understanding of the material. You will learn in this class if you engage with the professor, and communicate any issues.
Shes very energetic and its almost like shes tryna do stand-up comedy as well as teach, but shes great (although cringey at times when she pushes the joke for too long). Truly into what shes teaching. Lots of work and small assignments, make sure you really study for the midterm and exam, not impossible but not super easy either.
I feel very fortunate to have been in Deanna's class. Although the material is boring, she explains all concepts in great detail and going to the PASS sessions made the concepts even clearer. Sometimes her examples go off into some form of rant, which gets boring, but its worth it. The textbook was not really necessary and exams were fair enough.
BEST PROF AT CARLETON. So funny and passionate about teaching. she gives a lot of examples which helps you remember the material
Incredible person with a true passion for teaching. It seems that when people say what I just said, they often mean the professor has a passion for the material. Dr. Whelan has both. She invests an incredible amount of time in considering which text book to use, how to structure the class, and how to make herself most available to the student.
NOT a modest professor, talks about her life and her accomplishments for much of the lectures. Is condescending to students both in class and through email (unless you're her favourite student), and does not provide rubrics for assignments (there are about 10 per term + 2 tests). Wouldn't take again.
I honestly wouldn't of done so well in stats if it weren't for Deanna. Yes, there is a lot of work and she talks about personal stuff a lot, but she makes the content clear and relatable. She also gives excellent feedback and walks you through step by step how to use SPSS. Just make sure you give yourself lots of time for the actives and finals.
She is possibly one of the BEST profs at CU. If you go to class and do the homework she sets you up for success. She is brilliant and she loves what she does. I never thought I would enjoy going to a statistics class. I feel like she prepared us for masters level stats. Its a bonus that she is hilarious and makes stats fun and engaging!
So thankful I had Deanna as my stats prof. I thought there was no way I'd pass this mandatory class, but she made her lectures easy to follow. GO TO CLASS... some of the assignments are in class, but she doesn't tell you when. Best prof I've ever had for a stats course!
Thank god for this woman! I actually enjoyed going to her class and I understood what was going on. I got a C- in intro stats and I am leaving advanced stats with an A. She's brilliant, hilarious, can explain things clearly/ simply and really cares about the success of her students. BLESS YOU DEANNA! Assignments are challenging but worth it.
Deanna is a great prof, has a great personality and is always happy especially when you need it at 8:30 am. What I wanted to highlight were her grading options that took into account students who tested well versus students who tested poorly but performed well on class assignments. Perfect prof to teach research methods.
If you are intimidated by numbers/math and the idea of stats itself, TAKE STATS WITH DEANNA. She is so comforting and makes it so much more understandable and easier to wrap your head around. She really sets you up for success, her test reviews are top notch and she makes the lectures fun and genuinely loves what she's teaching!
If you want someone to make a simplistic course ridiculously complicated with a cumulative final. Additionally someone who's so aware of the "challenges" of this course yet continues to make it overly complicated, and unnecessarily difficult. Feel free to take her. Her slides are pretty useless and jump around everywhere, work gets graded slowly.
Great prof. Full of energy, explains well. However, often get out of topics of the course material and can drag on and on... Assignment are clear and fair.
Grade was based on 3 projects, midterm and final. If you read the textbook and take notes on it, you don't even need to go to class; you'll get above an 80 for sure.
Deanna is an amazing prof one of the best i've had at Carleton. She really cares about students and wants you to succeed in her class. Grading was spread out between 3 assignments, midterm and final. I switched stats classes to ensure she was my prof next semester. Would 10000% recommend her. If you can definitely take any of her classes.
Deanna is the best prof i have had at Carleton so far. she really structures her classes in a way that all students can succeed. if you are good at assignments she'll weigh those heavier, if your a good test taker she'll weigh that heavier. her lectures are fun, easy to follow. anyone hating on her probably just got a bad mark and blamed the prof.
Really funny and relatable. She understands we have other courses and picks textbook based on price and length so that were not overwhelmed. Her grading method is awesome. She calculates your assignment grades and your exam grades and weights whichever is higher more heavily to ensure academic success. I would 100% take a course with her again!
Love Deanna! She gives several relevant examples in class and explains the material well. Sticking to lecture content will allow you to pass, but reading the textbook and understanding the content is a must to do well. Writing in the PMC, she came by twice to take questions during tests (without being called) which profs don't tend to do. Love her.
Goes into detail on theories and formulas and has an exceptional grading scheme. If you pay attention, stay off your phone, and do your homework the class is a breeze.
Amazing at explaining the content. She also understands that all students work differently; some do better at exams, some at assignments. She calculated everyone's grades twice: the first time, she weighted the assignments more, the second time, she weighted the exams more, and whichever was higher would be your final grade. Super caring.
Great Prof. Cares about her students. A lot of easy assignments to get easy marks. Easy to pass the course if you do well on assignments.
The class is difficult but it's very doable. In my opinion, Deanna overcomplicates concepts in an effort to explain them without using mathematical concepts. If you're okay with numbers and math, her way of teaching may be confusing. The grading criteria is very clear and you have opportunities to do well. She was often rude to my class.
Deanna is amazing, she really cares about her students and tries her very best. Grading criteria is very clear and you have plenty of opportunity to do well. She makes stats a very enjoyable class and is one of my favourite professors thus far. There is a lot of work but that is to be expected in a math-heavy course
Deanna is my favourite prof and I absolutely hate math. She makes it extremely easy to understand and she's very open about being available to help in any way she can. Her lectures are interesting and as long as you attend class and pay attention you will do well! The textbook is helpful and an easy read. Cheat sheets for midterms! 100% recommend
Not my favourite prof. She overcomplicates simple concepts and she would often get frustrated with students for asking questions. It's also apparent that she does not effectively communicate with her TAs. That being said, it's definitely possible to do well in this class if you pay attention and work hard!
Amazing prof! Not sure why her ratings aren't higher. I'm not amazing in math and was really worried going into the class but she makes the material pretty easy to understand. You can really tell that she cares about her students succeeding. Even though stats isn't a great subject to be teaching she makes it enjoyable, 10/10 woule recommend!
Deanna is the best kind of professor there is. She really understands what it is like to be a student, so she is very fair in her expectations, she tells you what you need to know for testing, and she teaches you what you need to know in a way that you will REALLY understand it. She is such a kind, funny and respected professor.
So mean. Ask any question and she will demean you and make you feel dumb. Super passive aggressive. Expect it to take 5-6 weeks to get assignment and test grades back. Her tests are not consistent. In the three tests we had for the fall semester, none were the same format, and she was mean and demeaning if we got confused after it was changed 3x
Professor is OK, but you should rely on teaching yourself the material, come to class prepared, and expect to work hard for your grade. The class is a requirement for a reason, get ready to work!
I have alot of respect for Deanna you can tell she cares about the students. I finished the first half of her class, so far I enjoy it. Each sem theres a SPSS activity almost every week, 3 projects, 3 tests. The class is not easy and requires hard work and time, but I don't find it too much (even with full course load)
Expect to not have previous tests back before new tests that build on content. Taken over 8 weeks to get a 3 question test back. Really rude. Harsh on students and blames them for things and then when she messes up and doesn't have time or something crashes we're supposed to be understanding when she is not understanding to us
Are you taking Intro Stats and thinking of taking Deanna's course? Then there is no prof I would recommend more! Are you thinking of taking her for for adv. research and design? Maybe think again. When comparing her assignments to my peers with different profs it was clear that Deanna's class was far harder. Learning very good. Work hard.
Took a previous class with her, so knew I needed her for psyc 3000. The course itself is pretty heavy but she does a great job explaing it. Truly cares about students, provides many options for bonuses and opportunities to do well. If you put in the work, you'll do fine. Textbook, not mandatory but I did find it helpful
Maybe it has to do with the pandemic, but her time management skills are lacking. Assignments were never returned on time. Quizzes were just a bunch of trick questions not really testing your knowledge. She knows her stuff, sure, but she's bad at clearly explaining concepts to students, and then gets frustrated with students not catching on fast.
difficult class, not great with answering questions and explaining content. I had a hard time following her explanations and she made me feel as if I shouldve known better when I went to her with questions.
I took PSYC3000 as required with Deanna and I dont think she is well suited for Stats. She is unorganized and her emails were always not helpful as she would state what you did wrong and leave it. She was always negative towards work that was done and never offered help on how to fix those mistakes in order to help students learn in class. -1/10
I had failed stats twice before I took it with Deanna, and if it wasnt for her I wouldnt have done as well as I did. Not only did I pass but she made it easier for me to understand the concepts and actually apply them to the course content. Best prof for stats by far.
Deanna is a pretty good teacher, she made me really like stats and made it very easy to understand. She can be rude at times, especially when you schedule time with her 1-on-1. But she explains concepts very well, and she gives a lot of good feedback. If stats is not your strong suit then don't expect a good grade unless you put the work in.
Amazing course despite being touted as PSYC's hardest which has never been online before. I understood stats and analysis better through this course than I ever did in PSYC 2001 and 2002. Tough grader, but for a reason and you are told clearly why you got the marks you did. Had I done all the participation, this would have been an easy A+ instead.
I am horrible at statistics however, Deanna made this class bearable! She gave many opportunities to pass, if you arent a test person she gives many chances to still do well through projects and participation marks! Ive had her twice as a prof now and I would be delighted to have her again! She always made sure she was available for help!!
Extremely rude for no reason when you try to ask questions.. honestly the only hard part of the course was the prof.
She's very kind and tries to be helpful, but is extremely vague and doesn't explain concepts well enough for you to get a good grade. You can do everything she asked, she will check it, and you will not exceed a 70%. Be ready for weekly tests and projects.
During the time of COVID I had Deanna as my advanced statistics teacher. Though there are a lot of good reviews, my experience with her was horrible. She is very impatient and would get frustrated if anyone asked her questions. She is rude to her students on zoom and is very condescending. The coarse material she made very complicated-SPSS is simpl
As most have already commented, she is not good at answering questions. She has the tendency to over-complicate EVERYTHING. Doesn't prepare you for assignments, then provides lengthy instructions. Was surprised to read that she loves teaching, as I found her demeanour to be grating, and she does not provide information effectively.
I found her to be a very engaging lecturer and the group projects were fun if you have the right friends. It wasn't a hard class, especially if you like math.
One of the worst lecturers I've ever had at Carleton. Communicates ineffectively and sometimes just doesn't get to the point. She'll take a really basic concept and, somehow, over-complicates it. If you don't like going to lectures and rather just learn from the book, this class might be for you.
Anyone saying Deanna was a bad prof in PSYC3000 is either not self-sufficient or lazy because she makes it so you that if you put in the work you will succeed with flying colours. She practically built the course so that people could suceed as long as effort was put in so if you didn't do well I would consider blaming yourself
The way that Deanna has her course set up makes it very hard to fail, I'll give her that. Though, this is because she assigns weekly quizzes and weekly assignments each only worth 1%. Sometimes these assignments take hours, and grading is strict. Additionally, she can be passive aggressive and is not always clear when teaching..can be all over.
I loved her and the course. I'm a very math forward person fortunately, but the information was always easy to digest, she answered questions well, and never talked down to students. We had a textbook, but she posted anything we needed so you didn't have to buy it. Was super forgiving if you missed a deadline, and an optional final. Easy A imo
Deanna is the best stats professor I've had compared to my professor in my second year. She is always available to answer questions and is more than willing to help. Go to her lectures, there are pop quizzes every now and then to take attendance.
Learned more about using powerpoint than about psychometrics. She has a patronizing tone +glosses over important points in her lectures. Ironically, the exams seem arbitrarily challenging no matter how much study effort you put into it. IMO pass this class if you can, it is definitely not a memorable or enjoyable one.
Deanna made Psyc3000 unenjoyable. Tests were more difficult than anticipated by many. She would skim over important points in her lectures that we would later be tested on in detail. Answers to questions were unclear. She dismissed personal issues and said I could make it up with another evaluation, announcing it in our forum rather than my email.
In Deanna's class, you get out of it what you put into it. She can be somewhat unapproachable at times and her answers long winded, but she gives you many opportunities to get extra credit and does seem to want you to do well. Definitely more intensive stats class than some other profs sections, but the payoff is being better prepped for research.
As long as you watch the lectures and do the weekly labs then you'll be prepared for the tests and projects. She provides answer keys for the weekly labs that you can use to study and as a template for the tests and projects. Yet, tests are open book so as long as you practiced beforehand, you'll do well. Projects are time consuming but fair.
I agree with other reviews that you get out of it what you put into it. But she makes watching lectures engaging and fun, she is always enthusiastic. She provides many examples/explanations to account for different learning styles, which is amazing. I was so scared for statistics and I now love and understand it. If you work hard, you will do well.
She was super sweet, w/ bubbly aura, and the lectures were captivating and made sense. Whilst I'd say your best way to succeed is to just go to class + take notes, I actually ended up missing like.. 6 classes in a row, but she helped me sm during a class she dedicated to asking questions for the upcoming midterm. Would definitely take again!
She often overcomplicates the lectures and avoids providing examples where they are most needed. Additionally, the diagnostic tests are unexpectedly challenging because she doesn't adequately teach the methods required to solve them.
Deanna portrays herself to be very approachable but it is quite the opposite. She is very condescending and rude when you need help understanding the material. She wastes a lot of in class time making insufferable, never-ending jokes which could be used towards providing much needed examples (which she does not provide).
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS!!! She wastes class time with irrelevant tangents and overcomplicates simple material that would be understandable if presented straight forward. She doesn't provide examples on how to solve test problems or any sort of study guides. Her explanations are unclear, and she's often condescending when answering questions.
She is not helpful at all. She goes off-topic during lectures and skips key points that show up on exams. Her tests don't match what's taught in class, and she offers no study guides, practice problems, or clear explanations. She avoids covering calculations and doesn't answer questions effectively. I wouldn't recommend taking stats with her.
Deanna is an odd prof. When you ask questions or try to ask for clarification she's very condescending. Her tests have the most irrelevant questions and she doesn't give us enough clarity or practice questions to prep for tests. Very very absurd prof
Condescending but helpful. Most of the class found her MEAN/SCARY. We noticed she was personable at first but became extremely rude and arrogant in chats/questions. She would rather talk about herself than answer a question or ask about you. She is funny in a dry lecture. You get what you put into the course. The type to fake her own reviews.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever had and I have an A+ in every University course I've taken. Deanna is very condescending, rude, and lacks empathy for her students. She makes you feel scared to ask questions and is unapproachable. Doesn't explain concepts well and will leave you feeling lost and regretting taking her class. Read the textbook.
She seemed nice at first, likes to laugh at herself and seemed personable. Then the semester went on... and she slowly became the opposite. She is very condescending, and no approachable. She talks about her self for a good chunk of the course, and her instructions are extremely unclear.
Deanna was not bad, but also not amazing. Her tests were very difficult and did not reflect the course content. I had to spend my off-time learning stats concepts she never taught. She often goes on tangents irrelevant to the course, which would have been fine if the class was not only 1.5 hours. She would be much better if she explained concepts.
Worst prof I've had! It's hard enough understanding content when she doesn't do a good job explaining but she makes it even worse with her "jokes". She often simplifies content down to the point where you have to learn on your own. She presents herself in a way which makes her seem approachable but she is actually the opposite. Very condescending.
Presents herself as nice and open to questions but is the opposite and often makes you feel bad for asking. Her idea of providing examples are her sharing personal stories that aren't relevant to the content. Textbook was more helpful than her lectures. The only time she was nice was on prof evaluation day (not a coincidence). Very condescending!
She's not bad, she is very experienced in her field. But she does not provide enough examples of questions we would see on the tests to do really well on them (at least for the last 2).You can tell she gets annoyed by simple questions since she complains about it a lot in class, which comes off as humorous but it makes you scared to ask questions.
Capstone courses are already demanding as is, and Deanna hardly helped. She's very kind and caring, but her instructions are unclear and she's quite nitpicky. She assigns "progress reflections" which were supposed to help develop your writing skills, but it was just more work to do on top collecting and organizing research.
The class started well and then went downhill. She got lazier giving examples and making important points that show up in the tests. She goes on random rants that can be funny if the class itself wasn't so difficult. The class could've been way easier if she taught it better
Deanna made a statistics course interesting and worth attending. There are lots of opportunities for grades, and the final exam is optional and will only be counted if it helps your grade. She can be a bit strict with deadlines, but is lenient if you have a good reason.
Ur prob reading ts to see if this class/prof is worth it. This class is genuinely 50/50. No class will be 100% perfect. As a BA psych major, I can't do math for the life of me, but I can say that this class wasn't all that bad. She def tries & puts many participation marks, but asking for help will be difficult. Course is contentheavy so good luck
her style of teaching isnt for everyone, but shes not that bad. shes super vague in her lectures (can be confusing). she tests u more on theory than math (but u still need to know the math). the math itself wasnt rly hard. but she is super helpful when ur stuck and gives a lot of chances to make up ur grade. she isnt always a reachable person tho
This class is fully useless for business students, and I'm not sure why it's a required course. Dr. Whelan is very millennial coated, and her lectures are horrible. She somehow stretches 11 slides into 3 hours and says barely anything of value. Half of the text book content she will ask you on the midterms isn't ever mentioned in class.
Useless class, you just need to read the textbook. She is spending 3 hours yapping about herself & anecdotes from her life. Her exams will ask you specific details from the huge textbook that you need to read (at least 4hours/chapter). Psychology is interesting but this way of teaching makes you not want to ear about it ever again.
Her lectures are mostly based on narrating various aspects of her life or anecdotes. I attended all her classes at the beginning of the year to quickly realize, after the midterm, that it was useless. All of the test is based on the textbook, which each represents up to 100 pages for 2 chapters. It is an interesting course, but she has to improve.
Her lectures were great and exams were easy if you attended class + read the textbook. A lot of people felt that she went on and on during lectures + ended up not going, later wondering where they went wrong. Her stories are long, but always have a purpose, and themes connected to them are on exams. Enjoyable class, but must be present to succeed!!
Why am I learning about psychology as a business major, she's doesn't even try to link it to business when she asked us who was a business major and everyone raised their hand... she talks a lot and tries to be funny, lectures are boring and her slides have 5 words. Study the textbook, be ready to study ~50 pages for midterms and final!
Don't miss a lecture and take notes on the textbook a you're set. Each test only covers 2-3 chapters and the course is non-cumulative!! She's very nice and her lectures are engaging and interesting, just don't study last minute and you'll be fine. Evaluations are all about 90 mc.
The only psychology i've learnt in this class was psychological abuse. Every morning before this class i would wish my bus crashed so i would fly out the window and hit a car. 10/10 would cry again.
if you study and if you don't you are cooked either way. she makes the whole exam about statistics when the class has nothing to do with that. it is so useless for business students. she thinks she is funny and tries to make jokes that only she laughs to. her lectures are so boring and her slides have no information on them. do not recommend.
Good lecturer, cares a lot about the subject and the students. MindTap and the textbook are better than the lecture slides for studying. If you don't like the subject, you probably won't start liking it in this class, but the prof does a good job all things considered. 2 midterms, 1 final, each on 2-3 chapters, all multiple choice.
