I took Deb for Sociology, and she was wonderful! She always used personal life examples to help you remember subject material. I liked her teaching style. Easy A. Oh. Don't buy the book. We never used it.
Absolutely phenomenal teacher. Made life interesting. Loved the class.
She's funny, interesting lectures. Tests DO cover alot of material, so take good notes, and study.
Amazing teacher...seriously the best I've ever had. I love her teaching style, she's funny, she's crazy as hell, and sometimes you honestly can't believe the things she says. She's real and she's honest...she doesn't sugarcoat life or anything about it.
The best class and professor I've had.
This is by far the best professor I have ever had! She is great. She makes learning so fun, and she tells the best stories, if you don't take her, you will miss out on more than you will ever know.
I took her class online and IT SUCKED!! Her syllabus alone is full of so many little icons crap that takes up the page! And the thing is about 30 pages long!!! She treats the class like it is a 400 level university class... and it is a 100 level junior college INTRO class! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS ONLINE!!!
Seriously, unless you have hours and hours to devote to this class & completely understand sociology, do not take this class from her, well at least online. I took the class online & I spent hours & hours doing homework...Her test are real hard and although she may be nice. This class is on information overload. Don't take it from her!
Deb is the teacher for you if you really want to learn about sociology. If you are planning on a science degree you may want to find another teacher. Definitly a lot of work, but not insurmountable, and she will help you in any way she can. Deb is more than fair.
Deb is a great teacher, she can really make the information fun. While it is alot of information to learn she does not overload you. Her tests can be tricky but if you listen in class at all you will be fine. I definatly recommend taking her course.
Shes a great teacher. There is a bit of information to learn from her class but its very informative and shes very helpful during office hours. She definitely tries to use examples that relate to everyone. Attendance isnt mandatory but you might want to attend if you want to pass.
I love this teacher!!!! She is very understanding, helpful and her lectures are very well explain. Her class is definitely not boring. She makes funny jokes, but theres a lesson behind it.. I recommend her for those of you who are planning to take SOCL 120. I would definitely take her class again! BY: JOSEPH OGO JR.
I took this teacher online & I regret taking it with her online. We always had a lot of homework and a lot to read. Her exams were pretty hard & she doesn't give a study guide, so it is hard to know what to study because of all of the chapter we cover just from one section. I do not recommend this teacher!
I read student comments, most were correct, she is funny &crazy.Best teacher I ever had.For you haters, cant love all the people all the time, but I would check my study skills if Iwere you.Soc is a hard class, she made it easy.I had several problems she helped.Wouldnt have passed without her teaching and people skills. Thanks Deb,D Ketchum
I thought the work load was much higher than necessary. The tests where horribly difficult. I did end up with an A, but I wouldn't recommend her online class to any one.
She is an awful professor
We had her as a sub once. I wasn't looking forward to it after I've heard not so nice things, but she is actually hilarous. Her lecture was thought provoking and in-depth without being boring. Her lectures are stories from her life and you get hooked, not even realizing she's lecturing. She puts a real world face on the subject of Sociology.
D Bishop is a wonderful professor. Some people had some issues but it's like they didn't pay attention to her lectures at all..or hints that she would give about test questions.
Don't take this class online with her. She was awful. I had a 3.8 GPA, and I recieved a 2.5 in this class when I spent minimum 12 hours a week on this class. I did better in physics than hers. Her tests were unpassable, and the average % in the class was 58% this semester in my class. Obviously there is something wrong. Ugh, awful experience.
Deb acts like this class is a 400 level course!! INTRO = Beginners not professionals or Soc. majors! Do NOT take her.
Do not take this teacher. When I had her she was gone half of the time and when she was there didn't make any sense at all. Her syllabus is like a book and her lectures are confusing and frustrating.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. I took this class online. 52 page syllabus!! 5 pages of instructions for a 3 page paper. Questions on her tests that cannot be found in the notes or textbook. Her instructions make no sense. I rate her like this and I got an A in the class.
I felt this was more like a writing class! I felt I really didn't learn the concept of Sociology but rather, how to write a decent paper or questions. I would not recommend Deb Bishop!!
Seems like people just want to get their grade handed to them. There is work involevd big surprise. Its not hard though as long as you read your textbook and follow along in class. She gives you the essay questions before you take the test, and hands out multiple chances for you to get extra credit all due when you turn in your exam!!!
I have taking many classes on line, and understood what they were teaching. With this instructor it left me with alot of questions. I really don't think I got the full concept of what she was trying to say. I really can't say she was helpful, nor can I say that her teaching methods taught the things I needed to know. I would not recommend her.
Good Professor. You do need to meet deadlines. She does correct your writing, but it is only worth 10% of papers and doesn't effect your homework. READ THE POWERPOINTS! All the answers for the essay questions are always in a slide. All you have to do is rewrite it and you get full credit.
She is very hard, If you have a good GPA and have other classes that semester, do not take her, hes very hard and you have to put a lot of time into her work. She talks and talks in class and none of the stuff is on the test at all. Her exams are very hard. But She is a nice lady, but her class is too difficult.
lots of work, but well worth it. Pay attention to the powerpoint slides. All the test questions come from those. The book is helpful but not manditory. The only thing I used the book for was vocabulary words. Helpful, Kind, Funny, and sarcastic. I had a great experience even though there was lots of work.
Great teacher! Very funny, tells great stories and they most always have a point. Does not waste time and presents tons of information in class. I didn't use the book at all. I did however take plenty of notes and listened during class so I'm doing fine. Gives tons of extra credit and is very reasonable but not lenient.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE! She is a horrible teacher. Tests info does not come from powerpoints. Lots of useless info, not on test or anything. Does not tell you about important upcoming assignments, only tells you on the week its due. If you miss the discussion by 1 day, automatically cut by 50%
AVOID! Very hand-off with students and doesn't seem to like teaching. Syllabus is over 10 pages long. Provides a lot of unnecessary information with no direction about what is testable or most important to focus on. Provides absolutely no feed-back on assignments. Tests are difficult to understand and are multiple choice and essay questions.
Worst teacher ever! Does not respond to student emails and no feedback on assignments or why she graded u a certain way. Its obvious she hates teaching. She put more time into making her 23324 page syllabus look pretty with pictures and icons than actually helping students and making the material understandable
thorough, clear
I have taken 2 classes with Deb and she's awesome. She makes you work for your grade but she's very clear about what's expected. She does have long syllabus but it's detailed out with everything you'll be doing for every class period. I wish she taught more classes!
Mad Genius! She reminds me of Einstein in her looks and kind of in the way she is. I did have to work for my grade, but she was a great teacher!! I learned a lot and had a blast in the class. I enjoyed her stories tremendously. OH, and the book is only good for definitions.
Very tough on grades, Does not explain what you did wrong! Test material does not always relate to content of lessons. Would not take any of her class again.
I didn't like the class and everything I did wasn't good enough. She didn't explain the extra credit very well. No study guide for the test you just had to find out what chapters it was over on your own
Did not like this class and when I went to talk to her about the test and how they did not relate to the book she got upset with me. Our class average for test were like 69% just a hot mess. This class by far was the hardest class for me.
I had Deb, for Race and Ethnicity, She does know her stuff, however, she cares way more than you probably do and the amount of work that is required for her class is 3x more than I have ever had in a class. Its basically an online and lecture combined.
worst class of my life. i took the exact same class with a different professor the next semester and 4.0 the class. drop her as a prof. asap
Professor Bishop KNOWS her Sociology.. She knows the subject inside and out!! She unfortunately expects all students to have the same passion for the subject.
I don't know what others are talking about - Dr. Bishop is very clear about what she expects, she tells you what her essay questions are going to be and her work is straight forward. She sticks to her syllabus and as long as you follow it and attend class - and do her discussion questions you're golden. Loved her class!
Very knowledgeable and insightful. Lectures are engaging as well as enlightening. Lecture style is genuine. Encourages development of independent perspective.
Knowledgable on the subject sure, but not effective as a teacher. Very vague in response details, spelling and grammar errors on the exams. Exams consist of gotcha-style questions with an overwhelming sense of teacher vs student.
Deb knows her stuff, but she does not teach it to her students very well. I took this Soc 120 online and it was by far the most difficult class I've taken in my college career.
She was always on vacation it seemed out of the country and did not make herself available at all for those who may have needed some help. She made so much unnecessary work it was hard to keep up with the class. Most of the assignments were wild goose chases on the internet leaving me frustrated & still not knowing what I was supposed to learn.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. There are 5 exams and the Instructor claims the answers to the exams can be found within her PowerPoints but NOT true. I am a A student but I struggled to get my grade in this course. Way too many assignments, papers and exams.
Bishop made this class so hard and uninteresting. She did not care about her students, she made us be there everyday; however she didn't even know some of our names. She didn't interact with us in the class. She gave us so much homework that didn't even apply to the class. Would never take her class again.
Took an intro to sociology course with her a few years back round 2008. Her class caused me to change my major from chemistry to sociology. I have attended multiple classes from multiple schools while I've traveled around the eastern US, now I'm at University of North Carolina and no teacher has taught the subject as well as this she did.
She is not a god teacher. If you want to learn about her and her family and a million other things that she has done in her life then take this course. If you want to actually learn something from a teacher then take this course with a different teacher. She doesn't teach you what you need to know. Do not take this course.
Deb is very thorough and is always upbeat. If you pay attention in class, take detailed notes, and study for the tests, then it's pretty easy. She is pretty tough at grading, but it's all about the work you put in. She knows when you're trying. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Overall, a really great teacher!
Deb is a very cool teacher I really like her personality. However, her class is awful. I found myself dreading going to the class because it was uninteresting and difficult. She grades very hard. I was really looking forward to taking a sociology class but after this class I am never ever taking one again.
Deb is an excellent professor who was actually interesting to listen to, if you attend class and complete the readings you will have no problems. I wish I had had her for my intro course!
I do not agree with the negative comments. Deb Bishop is one of the most knowledgable professors at LCC. She has a very sweet kind of warm and fuzzy personality and would do anything to help you succeed if you put forth the effort.
This class is like taking a lecture and an online class but only getting credit for one. She gives so much work that doesn't even relate to the class. She talks about her family life for 2/3 of the class every time, and then frantically tries to teach in the last hour. I took a 4 1/2 hour lecture and it was agonizing. DON'T BUY THE BOOK!!
She was the best professor I have ever had. She was kind and understanding. She was a tough grader, but her course material was always SUPER clear. If you pay attention and take someone decent notes, you will pass. I enjoyed her classes very, very much. She is such an intelligent woman and a great teacher!
I love Deb as a person, and most of the time as a teacher. However, sometimes when she is explaining something, she gets very off topic and as a result, the class falls behind. She talks a lot about her life experiences, which are great stories, but sometimes seem completely irrelevant to the material. If you study, you will do well.
Deb is probably the most horrible professor I've ever had. Up until three days before the end of the semester, she only had five assignments graded. Then, she still only graded about half of the assignments. How are we supposed to know if we are doing the assignments correctly if she doesn't grade them until the end of the semester?
This is a tough class, with plenty of reading, writing, and discussion questions online. I spent more time on this class with Deb as an instructor than any of my others. That said, her lectures are on point (and yes, there are many stories, but they all relate to topics at hand) and are not dry. I enjoyed her class, and would take another from her.
She's a tough teacher, but makes sure you know your stuff. Puts a lot into the semester, so missing class means missing a lot. Do not take this class unless you're ready to work!
This professor is the worst one I have had to date at LCC. She does not grade anything on a timely manner so you never know if your doing things correctly. When she does grade, it is tough, and when questioned about the grade she provides ZERO personalized feedback. Her emails are rude, if you get her to respond. Take screenshots for proof of work
Deb knew her stuff when it came to soc. but when it came to grading assignments and giving feedback, hang it up. you wont get it until the day her grades are due at the end of the semester. no time to fix a falling grade.
Deb teaches the class with experiences from her life, which I preferred. She's a very inspiring women.
Deb is an amazing teacher! If you follow the syllabus & check D2L regularly along with putting effort in completing the HW & studying, you'll do fine. Even though there's a lot of material & she's a tough grader, I always look forward to going to her classes every week. She's always willing to help & tries to be as clear and thorough as possible.
This is one of the worst professor's to have. Her notes don't match the exams and when someone tries to disagree with what she is saying, she always has to be always right. All she talks about is her is her life to the point you forget what your even talking about. She's very harsh on essays. Her grading makes it tough for someone to even pass
Overall she is a great teacher if you don't understand something she will re-explain what she's talking about so you don't get confused. Her test are hard but other assignments are doable. She also gives students many chances to get extra credit in her class which helps a lot if your grand doesn't look that good.
Deb makes learning a lot of fun. Her class is not easy, but if you attend all the classes and do all the work assigned you will do great. She is fair and teaches in way that the material seems to stick. She is insprational.
Deb is an awesome professor! She uses a lot of real life examples, which can help come to test time. Come to class and you'll pass. You'll miss some very important lectures. Discussion questions are fun to answer, they help too. Deb is a smart lady, she knows her stuff. Take her!!!
Deb is very straight forward. Although she lectures a lot she is very insightful and gives you every detail you need. There are plenty of extra credits opportunities which will come in handy because she is a tough grader. There is not an excessive amount of homework, the discussion questions in her class are easy points if you follow directions!
Deb was a very nice lady. Really funny and had tons of stories to make class interesting. But wow, is this class hard. Tests are 60+ questions with 3 short answer questions. Tons of discussion questions online that are graded brutally. And homework assignments that are very long. Definitely come to class and stay up to date with assignments.
She's extremely real and honest and made this class so interesting. Everyone is free to speak their opinions and the whole class is based basically on discussions. Definitely would take her again she is also hilarious.
Deb is overall a very sweet lady, and very funny. She wants her students to do well. Her lectures are long but informative. My only issue with her class is how she doesn't remind us at all when online homework is due, and there is quite a bit of it. You really have to be involved to do well in this class, as it is a lot of work.
Worst professor I've ever had at LCC. If your opinion differs, you're wrong. Ridiculous grading scale and the reading doesn't give you any information for the exams. If you blink during the lecture, you miss half the notes.
Shes funny and caring but when it came to tests , the study guides werent helpful and when it came time for the test nothing that was on the study guide had anything to do with the test. Very frustrating.
I had an awesome time in professor Bishops class, this was my first Sociology class, and I enjoyed every minute, I am not your average student, and coming back to school after raising 4 children, one of which has a Bachelors, wasnt easy, it was a lot of hard work, but well worth it. Sociology is not my major, this class was very good!!!
Professor Deb was one of my most favorite instructors Ive had so far! I highly recommend her to any future Sociology student. She doesnt sugarcoat anything though; you have to study a little hard, but her humor and relatability makes the class worth it.
She was the best and would be honored to take her class again. She would tell personal stories to help students understand the lesson. It was engaging but do be warned there are weekly discussion questions and replies to other discussion questions that need to be done weekly. My advice is setting an alarm in your phone that will remind you.
She doesnt teach you anything. She lectures about her personal life and nothing to do with sociology
I would not recommend this professor. The semester that I took her she had to be absent for a month (which wasn't her fault) but it set back our whole semester which was really hard on the class. She is an awful communicator and it made the class really hard. I would recommend professor Kali or taking it online.
Worst prof ever! Her lectures have nothing to do with class! She was absent for so many classes!!! Do not take her class
Horrible professor! Dont take her class! Take it with someone else!
She wasnt in class much! She definitely missed more then 8 classes. Her grading is so tough you wont pass, she even told the class dont try and have me reread over your essay questions you wont change my mind about the grades. She lectures horribly! You basically end up falling asleep! Dont take her class!
She cared about all of her students. She had a detrimental health problem and had to be out for a whole month, which obviously was very hard for her. When she came back, she was incredibly understanding and kind. I did not do this until later in the semester, but I would recommend printing out the study guides and using them to follow lecture.
Her grading system is extremely difficult. She is very picky on everything and wants everything done her way. She missed a few weeks of class which really threw everything off. Her lectures are very long and sometimes she will get too carried away about her personal life. You have to pay close attention to the book and the lectures.
This instructor is the breaking point for people that'll make it in college and those who won't. I was in the class where the professor was gone for about 8 lectures (due to her being hospitalized) and it was more the Social Departments falt for providing an ill-equip substitute. Overall, she promised she would not screw us over, and she was right.
Worst professor Ive ever took! She talks and talks about her personal life and nothing to do with the class. She missed so many classes that you had no idea what was going on. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
She is overall an okay professor, but she tries to connect her lecture points to her own life resulting in her babbling on and on about her own life making class drag on forever, then rushes at the very end of class to show the important points on the slideshows. She is a very picky grader but lenient in some aspects. Choose another professor.
She is a very personable professor. When she starts to talk about her personal life however everyone drifts off. Also she really likes to make it seem like shes the most lenient grader in the world but that isn't the case, if you don't do something the exact way she wants it she'll fail you plus all work outside of class is never discussed at all.
Is a nice lady, but gets very side track with her own personal life (im not sure if all the stories were true). Acts like she is not a tough grader but she is. Her exams and study guide are not too clear. She is retiring !
