New professor syndrome: doesn't quite have the feel for JMU yet (for instance, only one allowed absence, on a MWF class). Syllabus is garbage. Throw it away. Accent is a little thick at times, difficult to get through, especially for an english class. That said, she TRULY cares about what she teaches and you'll be bettered taking her class.
The reading load is impressive: 60-100 pages for homework. Discussions are semi-interesting, at the worst. She's a noob and it shows. She'll directly call out students on behavior, which leads to downright awkward situations for all. She holds enthusiasm for what she teaches, so the class isn't overwhelming pedantic.
The class wasn't anything like I expected...the reading load is MASSIVE so be prepared! There's a lot of class discussion, a few papers, and a few presentations...nothing you can't handle if you do the reading. She has a really strict attendance policy but she's a nice lady and willing to help and answer questions if you need her to.
Strong point: She knows a lot about her topic- she lived in India. BUT I am an English major and found this class difficult. She assigns an absurd ammount of reading. She then quizzes you on specifics, not content... She'll ask for the Indian name of the main character's brother's husband's dog that was mentioned once. I wouldn't take her again.
Good thing's that she's well educated and Knows her topics.Bad things are not clear about her requirements(took off points if u did sth wrong), too strict and picky on grading papers, no xtra credits, have to write tons of papers, require you to remember all the Indian names and details of authors and characters, no rewiew guide for final test....
i'm glad that she changed her teaching style a little bit. She gave us a easier final test this year and everyone was happy and surprised. Overall, she's a great teacher and if you interested about Indian culture and literature, you should take her.
She is very knowledgable and expects a lot of you. There were 3 papers, a presentation, and a final exam. The reading load was around 100 pages a night, though sometimes less. But she is willing to help you with things you don't understand.
BIG PROBLEM with this professor...teaches an 8 am class yet is incredibly boring teacher...making it difficult to remain attentive through out the class...good at picking interesting stories to teach...bad at teaching them
STAY AWAY!!!! If you do not have to take this class don't take it for fun. You will regret ever meeting this woman. Kicks people out of class and calls you out if you are doing something besides staring at her. Very hard to understand because of her accent. Never tells you what is expected of you. Just gives random grades. Picks favorites.
Professor Mookerjea-Leonard is absolutely amazing. She is sooo helpful, and is not hard to understand at all. Definitely take her. Papers are short and the final is just another essay. Easy class, great teacher.
I was a little nervous coming into this class after reading the professor's ratings, but I found that some of them were not true. She knows a ton about the subject, which makes the class really interesting. It is a lot of reading, but if you do it you will enjoy the class discussions. Great class if you're willing to do the work. She's awesome.
I was nervous coming into this class because of all the horrible comments. But I now know that people who are not willing to try at all are not going to like this class. She is VERY knowledgable, very strict, LOVES people who give input, and is a very genuine nice lady. She's up for an award for the Englsih Department. TAKE HER!
the bad comments r from ppl who didnt bother puttin in any effort...shes nice but VERY STRICT...knows a ton about the subject...u hav several papers at most 3 or so pgs in length & one group presentation...shes a hard grader on papers but do take her b/c u'll def learn a lot
The people who are writing negative comments are obviously the people who did not read at all. The readings are easy and very interesting and the few essays she assigns are short 2-pagers. The final exam consists of writing 4 or 5 short paragraphs. I definitely recommend this class. easy gened fulfillment. Very interesting material.
She is erratic with expectations and not does communicate effectively in the least.
I can't believe she has any negative comments! Sure she's a little strict but come on, we're college students; she expects us to attend class and do the readings... as she should! Not to mention she's a nice lady.
This class was one of my best experiences at JMU. Sure, having easy teachers might up your GPA but JMU's GENED program doesn't exactly prepare anyone for grad school. I'm on my way to law school now and find the professional quality of Dr. Mookerjea's teaching to be invaluable. Give yourself some credit and quit taking classes that coddle you!
Best professor ever.
She doesn't post grades so you have no idea where you stand throughout the semester. The books are easy, but there's so much reading. She's bad at returning grades in a timely manner. Participation is 20% of your grade, so make sure you do that.
First day of class i thought i would have to drop because i thought her accent was too thick but she ended up being very clear. Picked interesting books. Two tests, both essay forms. 8, 1 page papers due throughout the semester. Overall a fun an engaging class. One of my favorites so far
She is one of the most knowledgeable professors ever. She assigns interesting readings, and though she expects you to participate, she alternates between open-ended questions and ones regarding the text. You get sooo much out of this class. She's strict though. Also her grading isn't impossible. Just put a bit more effort into this gened.
Good person cares about students, but NOT a good professor for a vital class into the Eng major. Unorganized, last minute assignments, NO office hours during the day. VERY strict about attendance and respect. By far my biggest problem with her is that she in no way teaches info that you NEED to know. HARD grader. Do not take!!!
she doesn't teach at all. We were suppose to learn how to write papers concerning literature, and she never taught us how. So when it came time for her assignments, many people didn't do a great job because she never provided guidelines. She's concerned with your health, but not your academics. She's never even available most of the time.
I learned a lot in this class. Loved it. My writing has really improved.
She takes the class seriously, even though I took a Gen Ed with her. She managed to learn my name despite their being probably 200 kids in the class. I liked her, she can be sassy at times, goes over class time by a few minutes, and does not allow tardiness or cell phone use. tests are a crap shoot, you can read all the material and still do awful.
I have no idea why people are saying she's the best professor at JMU. She was by far the worst one I've ever had. In a class with 200+ people, she expects you to participate everyday. You have no idea how you're doing throughout the course because grades are posted online. The tests are way too specific and practically impossible to ace.
Horrible. So excited about my English major/classes but now I'm switching.Very unclear on what she wants on assignments and won't tell you until the day before it's due EXACTLY how she wants it. Goes over easy material in great detail, but the harder stuff she doesn't go over at all. If you don't like participating in class don't take. "Am I CLEAR?"
Extremely intelligent and insightful, she takes this class very seriously and expects students to take it seriously as well. Very interesting readings, that broaden your mind and challenge your opinions on very controversial topics. Very good class for a gened.
There are 7 books for this class: One is 83 pages and the other 6 vary between 198-321 pages. If you take this class, be prepared to read lots every night for this GenEd. If not, Gradesaver, Shmoop, and Wikipedia will become your friend. I believe the amount of work expected for this class is a bit high and would not recommend this professor.
I was actually interested in this class. However, after preparing for weeks for each test (midterm & final) I still failed both. She asks ridiculously specific questions that don't even matter to the stories. You can feel completely confident but still fail. I'll be happy to pass the class- it was a NIGHTMARE .. Take any class but this one!!!
If I could give this teacher a lower rating, I would. I don't know how I pulled off a C. It must be from pure luck and praying because she asked the trickiest questions on her tests. I recommend her to no one.
This was the best class I took last semester. She is very passionate about what she teaches. Great class!
If you do the work, you will enjoy this class. I loved this class and the instructor. Will take her again. The tests are easy if you have attended class and done the reading. Interesting books.
This has been one of the most stimulating classes in my college career. I learned so much about writing papers in this class. The discussions were very interesting and the instructor very knowledgeable. Loved her.
Hard. Very boring class, hard to understand her, only two tests- midterm and final- and she chooses the minuscule details to test on. Would not recomend.
Great class. I didn't find her to be hard to understand. You just have to pay attention. I read every book, each were very good and easy reads. There were two or three papers. Only thing I disliked were the tests - the multiple choice questions were very specific details. She mentioned all these details in class, though.
I loved this class. Loved the books. She is very thorough, she goes over the material very carefully. Glad I took it.
loved loved loved this class and the instructor
Takes time out of every class to call someone out for texting in a 200 person class saying it distracts her. She seems to actively look for things to make a scene about, even if nobody is doing anything wrong. Makes you know useless material on texts such as how to spell the author of a books name.
I loved this class. I enjoyed all the books and I was in class everyday. I hate it when some students text in class and distract the professor and other students, if you don't want to pay attention, don't come to class.
AVOID. Very close minded professor and you will only read about India. Terrible accent that nobody can understand, so there is no point in going to the lectures, albeit they are mandatory. If you get caught texting you fail for the day, she belittles you, and kicks you out. As a senior, this is the worst class I've taken at JMU. Look elsewhere.
Literally all you have to do is show up to class and pay attention. Tests are on finite details, but if you listen and participate, you'll do fine. Books can be boring, but she explains them very well so they become interesting. Also, if you want to text during class, pick a different class. She's a really nice person, you just have to be a good.
Don't take her. Awful accent and tough testspapers. ALL you will do is read about feminism in India so be prepared to hate your life. Go with an 8 am over this class.
So much reading for this class... yes I am aware it is a lit class but reading a few hundred pages over night is a little ridiculous don't ya think?
She's AMAZING. I have no idea what the people below me are talking about. NO pop quizzes, just a midterm (SUPER EASY) and a final, two papers, and a presentation. I laugh at least once every class and she's my FAVORITE teacher ever. Easiest class ever!!!! TAKE IT. My favorite class I've ever taken. She makes it fun.
Has an accent and expects you to read the books, but if you go to class, she basically gives you everything you need to know for the tests. Great GenEd, would definitely recommend.
Great teacher, very sweet lady. Attendance is mandatory every class but it is just because she wants you to succeed. Really drives in the points you need to know for the tests and makes sure you understand everything. Grade is based on participation, midterm and final, a presentation and two papers. Go to office hours for help on paper.
This class is an easy A. Show up, participate (she gives you extra credit) and make sure you read the books. Yeah, it's a lot of reading, but it could be worse. She goes over the book in class and as long as you pay attention and take notes, you will be fine for her tests. There are three papers, a midterm, and a final. Not bad at all!
Sometimes difficult to understand, but explains everything very thoroughly. LOTS of reading though! Texts are pretty interesting but I didn't have enough time to read them all. Gives extra credit for participating in class which is nice!
She is very knowledgeable about South Asian literature and most of the books are interesting. You must attend class because there is no powerpoints and she loves participation. She grades hard for her essays but the midterm and final are easy.
This was my favorite class this semester. I read books I otherwise wouldn't read. The lectures are fun. Participation is important. I would recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Leonard was so interesting and helpful. I loved this class. There was a lot of reading but it was relevant and necessary for lecture. Tests were short and easy. If you read you knew it. Writing was a little harder, 4 papers required but they weren't long .
You MUST read the books, but they aren't horrible. She gives you everything you need for the tests and they aren't bad at all. She has an accent but has a funny sense of humor. You can miss three classes without penalty. Overall, very good professor!
The books were interesting and she gives extra credit for participation. BUT. Her lectures are irritating, she insists on participation but can't actually hear anyone's answers. If nobody answers right away she acts like we're idiots who haven't cracked the book open. Condescending, aggravating, and disorganized. Don't take it unless you have to.
Negative grades are given for some incomplete assignments, and completed assignments are worth an additional 0 points; not helpful for our overall grade. Hard to understand on occasion. Also runs the 200 person lecture as if it was a 15 person discussion session, asking questions while unable to hear our responses in such a big room. Can be funny.
I thought she was hilarious and I really enjoyed her class. There are a lot of readings but I thought they were pretty interesting. You definitely need to read to pass her class. She expects a lot of you and wants you to put into the effort, but if you do you will get a good grade.
LOVE DBM! Hopefully will have her again in the future. She seems strict at first, but she is so sweet, helpful, and funny by the end of the semester. Go to office hours and she will say exactly what she wants in papers. Do the readings and pay attention in class. 2 SUPER easy tests (assuming you study and brush up on reading details). Take her!
There's a lot of reading and the books are so weird, but if you just kept up with the reading schedule, the class is pretty easy. She tells you exactly what you need to know for tests, so they're really easy if you take notes and study a bit. Participate in class enough and you can get up to 4% added to your final grade, AM I CLEAR?
Under no circumstances are you to take this class. The class is dysfunctional, the professor is unorganized every day, and the teaching assistant puts the same feedback on every students paper without reading them fully. This class and professor are not within keeping of JMUs high academic standards.
I took this class last semester and loved this class. The readings were wonderful. I learned a lot about parts of the world I didn't know, and books I would never have read on my own. The professor has a wonderful sense of humor. I recommend this class to all students. The lectures were always very clear and she explains everything in great detail.
Really enjoyed this class, readings can be extremly overwhelming, so find a solid summary online and go to every lecture and you will land a solid grade in the class. There are 2 exams and 3 papers. Exams are not bad if you listen in class, and papers are easy A's if you work for it and go to office hours. Really enjoyed this class
She's a pretty relaxed teacher and open to hearing what you have to say. You must talk in class or you will not pass. Tons of reading, but skimming will give you enough to have a few points to say in class but make sure you read before the midterm and final because the details are (too) specific... good luck!
Avoid at all costs. Class is awful and boring, tests are so specific that even if you read you won't know some of the questions. Papers are all graded the same with same comments it's like he doesn't even read them. Makes you participate in class and is pretty rude
She is very unnecessarily rude to students and treats us like children. She's very condescending and will encourage you to participate in discussion and then look at you like you're an idiot when you try to participate. She's very disorganized and will often make class go overtime due to her rambling for no reason. Would not recommend.
I thought the classes' material was really interesting. Lots of reading but I generally enjoyed the books. Professor is super enthusiastic about the material but sometimes rambles and doesn't always follow the syllabus, she is also sometimes rude to students. Exams multiple choice and simple. Overall would recommend for an honors class.
Maybe try to avoid but if you have to take her she's not too bad. Kind of crazy and disorganized in class but tests are based on everything she says in class. The 3 papers shouldn't be too hard if you go to graders office hours. Definitely go to every class if possible.
Two short papers, interview/report, participation, and leading class discussion are the only assignments. All pretty easy. Final exam was straight forward. She's from India and likes to give some sweet examples from her life. Don't do anything stupid or else you will catch her wrath lmao. Syllabus isn't exhaustive so ask for clarification on work
Don't like English? Do NOT take her. Crazy unorganized, extremely rude, and her class most of the time is simply just a history lecture. I was an English major but because of her I switched. Participation is as heavy as the final so make sure to read and actually talk because if you don't, you will suffer.
Dr. Mookerjea-Leonard knows what she is talking about. She is from India and, really, it's kinda amazing that she even teaches at JMU, where almost all the profs are Americans. She's very sweet and loves her subject, but don't treat her class as a stroll in the park.
Dr. Mookerjea is amazing! Don't listen to these other bad reviews because they are just lazy people. Yes, there is a lot of reading but so is every other English class. Her books are so interesting and she is so funny!! As long as you do the readings, you'll get an A on the midterm and final. There are two papers but no longer than 3 pages.
Dr. Mookerjea-Leonard gets such a bad rep because she expects each student to put effort into the class and accepts nothing less. But spoiler alert: that's college. If you're doing anything less in your classes you seriously need to reevaluate. Dr. Mookerjea-Leonard will push you to do your best, and anyone who says otherwise is lazy. Take her!!
Mookerjea-Leonard inspires you to learn. She expects you to do the reading, and why not, the material is so interesting. I looked forward to going to class. Will take her again and again.
I have taken three courses with Dr. Mookerjea so far and these were the best classes of my college career. She is very thorough, gives great lectures and has a wonderful sense of humor. I would take her again.
First off, a gen ed english class should not have mandatory attendance, I could've gotten the same grade by never going to class. The nice thing is you don't have to read the books to pass, but you will want them for writing the papers and studying.
I am a senior retaking her ENG 239 class and Dr Leonard is one of the worst professors I've ever had at JMU. Her lectures will bore you to death and she offers no resources to help you study for her god awful tests which focus on insignificant details from the 10 or so chapter books you will read throughout the semester. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I genuinely looked forward to this class every day. Dr. Leonard is serious and fun at the same time and the class discussions were engaging but also slightly terrifying (possible pop quizzes). I would not take this class again because the quiz grading is very harsh and there are not many grades. Despite the grading, I really enjoyed this class.
Loved this class. She knows so much and gives great lectures and because she has a wonderful sense of humor it is a pleasure to listen to her. Highly recommended.
the class isn't the most interesting, but it's fine for a gen ed. The 2 exams and 3 papers are focused on the books, but she basically goes over the readings in class which is nice for review. Just show up, take notes on what she says about the book and you should be fine. You also get extra points for participating in class.
Dr. Leonard is very passionate about the literature she teaches: Southeast Asia. You will have to read somewhere around 7 novels with that theme but most of them are actually quite entertaining. She rewards students who read by giving out extra credit if you participate in class discussions in lecture. Take her for this class and do the readings!
Shes okay. Shes funny and passionate about what she teaches but obviously, as an English course, theres a lot of reading. I never found any of the books interesting, but there are three papers throughout the year that you have to write based on them.
My all time favorite professor at JMU. I have taken multiple classes with her and she is amazing. 10/10 you will be inspired if you take one of her classes.
Such a sweet prof! Very personable too!! If you do the readings and pay attention in class, it is very easy to succeed. Her exams & papers are straightforward and are often on info that she explicitly explained in class. Extra credit for class participation. Overall, pretty good GenEd and interesting material! Take her!
Dr. Mookerjea is so funny and keeps lectures interesting. She asks a lot of questions so participation is important. There is a lot of reading but the books are pretty interesting, some can be hard to understand but she will explain concepts if you ask. You have two exams and two short papers and one or two assignments so you have to prepare.
There were very few assignments that are graded, so you have to do very well on these assignments. Make sure you read the books because there will be papers on them and the papers are graded very harshly.
She knows what shes talking about but particpation is necessary to pass, you really need to pay attention and take good notes. Theres three papers and a few little assignments, the midterm and final are on the books
I did not like this class at all. We had to read 6 books and do papers on them. They graded them insanely hard. I would not recommend this class at all. It felt impossible. Everything I did for this class I would get a C on.
I loved this class. The books are very interesting and DBL is obviously very passionate about the topic. I would be wary of the fact that there are only six assignments in the grade book, so the essays are very important to do well on.
She's a nice lady but the class itself is terrible. Lots of reading, boring lectures, and SUPER specific test questions. She also doesn't reply to emails so if you have questions good luck. Would NOT take this class again.
This class was all over the place. I was constantly confused, and the few papers that determined our grade were graded pretty poorly in my opinion as well. However, I assume the online setting is what made this class so chaotic. Professor Leonard is really passionate and knowledgeable and a good person. I wouldn't take again, but I did not hate it.
Prof. M-L is an absolutely incredible teacher, and you can tell that she is very passionate about literature. Although the course is very reading and detail heavy, lectures are always interesting and I always left class feeling like I'd really learned something--unlike other lit professors. She is a fair grader, and really respects her students.
Taken Spring 2021- So many textbooks. The papers are alright if you buy the books and skim through to write your topic. YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOKS TO DO WELL ON THE EXAMS. She will have the most insignificant details from the books on the exams as questions. Very boring lectures. Knows her information. Extra credit for talking in class.
This professor is one of the most inconsiderate I have come across thus far at JMU. Even if you e-mail her with an excuse to miss class(sickness, family problems, etc) she wont respond or care. Also, if you are actually interested in English, do not take this class. She does not discuss any themes, only like names of characters and boring things.
This class entails a fair amount of reading, and your grade is based only on 2 papers, midterm, final, and participation. She isn't a tough grader, and if you actually read the books and pay attention in class, you should pass. I really liked the books and the topic, but it was a lot of reading. Overall, not bad for a gen-ed literature class.
very passionate, and knowledgable about the content of the course. It is too bad she makes you read a ridiculous amount of books and only grades you on 3 papers, a midterm and a final. The papers aren't graded too harshly and you get extra credit for answering questions in class. Workload is a lot when you have 3 or 4 other classes.
Assistant teacher grades all papers and gives the class the same grade with the exact same feedback. He doesn't do much but yell that he needs the attendance sheets passed when Prof ML is speaking. Would've loved this class if the actual professor was grading what SHE taught. Barely any grades, extremely tough grader. Go to class for EC.
Honestly one of the worst classes I have ever taken. Every class is just her asking you questions about the book you are reading. Nothing is engaging, and you are graded on 3 papers, a midterm, and final. There was no point in going to class since you knew it was just her asking questions. If you take ENG239, simply do not take it with DML.
Very sweet professor, but not very engaging. Didn't go to class unless there was an in-person exam. The lectures were useless, she just asked us questions about the book and there was no further analysis of the text. Prepare to do a lot of reading, but don't worry about attending class, it's not worth it.
She's very blunt which is kind of funny. Offers tons of extra credit as long as you answer her questions in class and attend class. Take notes in class and mark pages she explicitly talks about to help with papers. Extra credit: Grade can go from 80 --> 86 if you get all of it. Not that bad of a class besides the fact its an English gen ed.
She did not help you she forwarded everything to the GA... She is not the nicest, the course is super book heavy, we had to rent/buy 7 books
I took South Asian Literature and I really enjoyed the class and texts we read. Lots of opportunities for extra credit (up to 6 points onto final grade) from participation and going to class. All the exam questions for the midterm and final are talked about in review days, so go to those days at least. Keep papers simple and you'll get an A.
Dr. Leonard is one of the most caring professors at JMU. Participation in and out of class does matter to get a good grade. Attending every class earns you extra credit, and it is super interesting to learn about cultures from South Asia. I highly recommend taking this course as an English Gen Ed
This is the worst class I have ever taken and will ever take in my entire life. Every single piece of information discussed in the class is completely fictional, and I have learned absolutely nothing.Professor makes you buy and read 8 books about South Asian Literature. Very condescending tone in class, attendance mandatory, papers graded tough.SOS
She told me on multiple occasions to drop the class because I "wasn't good enough for her class". There is so much reading that you won't have time to do anything else. She thinks her class is the most important. Strongly advise against her.
She truly does care about you and if you go above and beyond, she takes notice. Also, there is a grading faculty in her class that you can ask questions if she doesn't know the answer.
prototypical gen ed professor. a lot of reading and she gets frustrated if you don't know the book at all. Can get by without reading, but you can't miss a class if you don't read because of the lectures being your only hope then. The 3 essays are annoying, but not overly difficult.
Not for the faint of heart, but Dr. Leonard is amazing. If you enjoy English this lady will rock your world. She has seen stuff and she is not afraid to tell some personal stories about living in India, Kenya and other places. Truly an inspiring teacher that will care for you, if you care about the class.
actually the worst prof ever, but i dont know who is worse, her or her TA. they post NOTHING on canvas and will gaslight you that it is there when it is not. i got graded so harshly on the first paper because i didn't use quotes when theres NO RUBRIC POSTED THAT SAYS I NEEDED QUOTES! they didn't bother to let me add them in either. don't take her
Such a fun and informative class. Attendance not required, but you can get extra credit through attending. Instructions were very clear for every assignment, and she and the TA were very helpful with any questions. As long as you do the reading, this class is a breeze. Plus, the reading selection was super emotional and brilliant!
Seven books, participation matters, two papers, midterm, and a final. She yaps all class about the books so if you dont take notes then good luck. Fairly engaging but goes on about unrelated stuff too. Is a pain and inconvenience if your writing isn't on par with her expectations. Has 0 consideration for students. Class is ok though, professor? No.
Dr. Leonard's ENG239 is a challenge, but your effort pays off. The reading load is heavy, but the lectures and discussions are engaging. unstuck study's study tools really helped me stay on top of the material.
ard to understand
The worst teacher and class I have ever taken at JMU. The teacher just yaps all class in a horrible and boring lecture format. You are graded based on a total of 6 things and the 3 essays are graded harshly when you only have an hour to write them. The TA is chill but the class overall just sucks do not take this teacher or this class.
A ton of reading, so avoid if you dont like that. she can be very particular, and her lectures are pretty boring and sometimes tough to follow. also, only graded by a few things. would not recommend.
I thought her class was great, if you don't find talking about the books you read to be interesting, you're going to hate her lectures. And it's a lot of books, you can get away with not reading them for a bit but then your scores on the tests will be terrible. The grader is tough with papers, he's very particular, remember to quote good evidence.
I genuinely loved this class. Gives extra credit if you go to class, and you get points for participating. The books for this class are amazing reads. As long as you go to class you will be okay! Go to office hours, especially with the grading staff. My class had Nick Webb. Really chill guy, gives great feedback.
