Very unclear and boring. Do yourself a favor and dont take this class unless your life depends on it. Tests are essay and thats the only way to get points in the class.
basically have to teach yourself...tests are hard and classes are long and boring because all she does is lecture.
teacher just sits in one spot the entire time and her voice is extremely monotonous, it would drain my brain and put everyone to sleep (really) within the first 10 minutes of class, class is extremely boring and I would not recommend her ever
It seems as if she enjoys handing out bad grades. Her tests are near impossible. She had to give multiple choice testing when I took her class and these were the hardest tests. She tests on items that she doesn't cover in class. Her lectures are horrible. Take this class at Santa Ana not here.
very helpful and know a lot of what shes teaching about
If you listen, read the book, and study the diagrams that she draws on the board, you can easily pass the class, and any class she instructs. If you need help, visit her during the office hours and she will be more than happy to help. Make sure to sit in the front row so that you can see the notes clearly.
I would rather watch the Emergency Broadcast System, and listen to the long tone for 3 hours.
I did all of my homework including a 20 page paper on the geological findings of Zion National Park... and I still failed!!!! She is a disgrace to teaching. She is so bitter about life that she chooses to make us all suffer.
"Run Like Hell" If you want an F this is the class for you. She is not a good teacher you have to teach yourself it is not worth it.Pass on this teacher
shes not that bad if you get to know her shes actually cool.its geology how fun can it be.just act like a college student in her class and she's fine
shes not that bad at all. I thought she was clear and helpful. shes really easy and helpful in lab.
I dont like science classes, but this was ok.
This Class was not one that I was looking forward to taking but it turned out well, she create more points than is on the cylibus which helps the grade. She's straight forward and has a good attitude, but doesnt put up with BS. She gives good notes overall experience was good. She does keep class to the very end. no early nites with her.
A challenging class, but if you put in enough effort, passing could be achieved. The famous T/F exam questions were meant to show you knew your stuff and didn't just guess. Quizzes hurt my overall grade in the class, but that was my fault, not Prof. Brooks'. I would take another class with her if I found one interesting to me.
Gave an extra 10% in points. Still, it's not an easy A. Very detailed notes and information. Good teacher, but be prepated to stay the whole class.
Professor Brooks has a great knowledge of the science field and seems anxious to share that and help students that are having trouble. I enjoyed her class though I hate science
Very competent and fair. Learned more than I thought I would
Brooks gave plenty of opportunity for extra credit, which makes getting a good grade attainable. Sometimes she goes off topic, but it's not too distracting. Is willing to clarify topics if asked questions. Classroom participation is something she expects, so keep that in mind. An overall very good professor!
Grades too hard.
Good professor, knows her stuff. Quite a few class cancelations. Whether that is a good or bad thing is up to you. Easy tests. A little bit of homework but it is also easy.
I took her lab only. Easy to suceed if you do all the homework and attend class everyday. The workload is excessive for a one unit class and the class work is very time consuming, and can be frustrating. Good class though, and shes nice.
Professor Brooks was a wonderful help in the class. She was very knowledgable about the material and made it interesting.
Professor Brooks was a blast to take this class with. She made the subject very interesting. If you do the class work this is an easy grade. Tests are very fair and no surprises. She is also very reasonable, but will not put up with much BS.
Her lectures are full of stories to help you understand the information she is giving you. I didn't read the book and still got a good grade. Our class was the first Earth Science 115, so she may change some things. It was a fun class, I really liked the lab. The only thing is she can talk a lot. Very little note taking.
she cancels class ALL THE TIME, really made me wonder what I was paying for. Her grading is a little wack, i had an F before the final yet I had gotten A's on ALL of my tests. I ended up passing, but didn't get why I had the F. She does a good job with comparing so that things are a little easier to understand for those who don't get it.
Great teacher! Easy to understand! Very helpful and approachable!
She thinks she is right when she is teaching but her tests are really easy if you study and she doesn't give too much homework but she will never let you out early.
Boring lectures where she goes on and on about personal stuff, not relating at all. Forces learning things her way or the highway. Lots of prep for super easy tests. Always keeps class for full length, cancels class often. Take Prof. Hovanitz if you can, if not be prepared to be bored. Takes attendance but doesn't clarify how it impacts grade.
Brooks is a great teacher. Very smart woman and great on lecture. This class was easy overall. She cancels quite a few classes; however, attending class is very important. Testing is basically based on what she lectures. Easy class!
PROFESSOR BROOKS WAS A SURPRISE. I THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE BORING BUT SHE MADE IT A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. I AM NOT A SCIENCE PERSON BUT SHE MADE THE CLASS INTERESTING AND HER GRADING WAS FAIR. TESTS ARE EASY IF YOU PAY ATTENTION.
The lectures are boring but show up, take notes and study and you will get an A. Also make sure to do the online quizzes. I didn't do them and it was the difference between an A and B.
This professor really cares about the students. She would answer all questions. When I missed class I got help during office hours. I would take her again
Whe was very helpful. The quizzes were on line and I just blew them off. If I had done the on-line quizzes I would have a B.
The subject matter is hard to grasp because of the large numbers and sheer complexity of the systems. Debbie knows what she is talking about and is passionate about Astronomy. As she put it its her "fun" class. The class material is difficult, but if you don't understand something speak up, and Debbie will INSURE that you get it.
I found Ms. Brooks to be informative, interesting, funny and enjoyable. She packs a lot of information in her lectures, but also lets you know what is important to remember for future tests. While I took this class as a requirement, I really enjoyed it, and plan to take another one she may be teaching!
She is a wonderful teacher, knows her subject and has no problem admitting she's human. Take good notes and she lets you know what will be on her tests. Study that and you should do well. Take her online quizzes and you'll do fine.
Lectures are usually interesting and presented clearly. Complicated earth science processes are made understandable. However, even if you attend class and read the book, don't count on getting an A on the test. Questions can be pretty random. And the professor will spend a whole class period berating everyone if overall test scores are low.
terrible teacher shes rediculous hardly anything of what she covers is on the tests. Often times confuses students by putting 3 right answers within the question and often times lowers test grades greatly. terrible teacher
She missed a total of 2 weeks of class and was a few weeks behind the syllabus, which made it very difficult to follow wtf was going on. Didnt take exam3 untill the class meeting before the FINAL. Words questions like a retard on the test making it hard to understand. Literally 2 ppl got 90's on the 3rd exam. I am a good student... DONT TAKE HER!
Note the grammar level of the extremely negative comments. If you are decently good at studying/note taking, you should not have a problem on the tests. They're not easy, but not unreasonable. And this prof is very enthusiastic about her subject.
Had her for lecture & lab.Very interesting lectures. Tests are hard and tricky. Lab is interesting, except mapping which was awfully difficult. Only be in her class if you are a mature college student. She has zero tolerance to high school behavior and I don't blame her one bit!Anyway, yes I recommend her but my advice is to read into small details
Be prepared to read the book about 3 times over. She teaches you one thing and tests you on another. The class results of the last test were as follows: A's-0. B's-2. C's-4. D's-10. F's-22. You judge that as you will. And these are people that studied too.
Debbie is a great teacher. She does every thing on powerpoint so you need to tell her to slow it down from time to time. She misses a lot of class so and her test are the power points. I did get a F on one of her test, but ended up getting a B+ in the class because she will replace your lowest test grade. Highly recommend taking her class.
Debbie Brooks is an amazing professor. Yes, she is difficult, but it's college people. She has an incredible amount of knowledge on her subjects, and she truly cares about her students. She's a genuine person, and has a wonderful heart which shines through her teaching methods. I highly recommend her.
Geol. 101 Lab was an easy class as long as you come to class each week. Online quizzes were fairly easy and she even allowed them to be retaken until you get the score you are satisfied with. Some of the labs get to be kind of boring, but the class is all about rocks and such.. Midterm and final are very straight forward. Need a lab, take this.
Fantastic teacher! She's always willing to help if you don't understand something. As long as you go to class and do the online homework, it's an easy course. Her final is compiled from her previous tests. Had a B in the class going into the final because of the homework. Managed a 106% on the final and pulled an A in the class. Take her courses!
horrible teacher, boring class.
Enthusiastic and very knowledgeable professor. She has a big heart even though many don't seem to realize that. Be prepared to study hard. Her tests aren't easy but they are on what she covers. I recommend taking the lab along with the lecture. Makes the material much easier to follow.
this class was awful. it was fairly easy, and there is next to no homework, but the tests and labs were extremely frustrating. ms. brooks missed 5 days of class in the first 11 weeks and we were extremely behind for the rest of the semester. she wrote tests either the night before or the morning of and often made a LOT of mistakes on them.
Teaches at a snails pace. She misses class often which is frustrating. Online quizzes can be taken multiple times, ie no reason not to get 100%. Tests are 80% notes with the rest out of the book. I took minimal notes, attended minimal classes, read the entire book and got an A. Don't take her class if you are looking for anything more than credit.
She is a very grouchy woman, if you can handle that and put forth the right amount of work and take notes religiously you should be fine. Although I barely slipped by with a C.
Took her summer 4 weeks class and got a A. Agree it is a very boring class but if you just write down the notes and re write them as she says to do its easy. The 4 week class was just based on the 4 tests which she replaces your lowest test grade if your final was higher which got me my A!
She is a terrible teacher who is often very grump. She misses class so much and expects you to make up what she can't cover in class because of all the time she misses. I don't suggest taking her at all she is a terrible teacher.
Never on time.Missed alot of classes..Never allowed us to be in classroom unless she was there because we could hurt ourselves with rocks. Easy class if you take notes and read the book. She messed up our 2nd test which she made us still take after removing 1/2 the ?s and added an essay no one was prepared for. Don't take unless you have to.
im not a science person so this class ended up being boring, but it wasnt her it was the class. she's a great prof. and loves to teach about geology/astronomy. if you have an interest in science youll enjoy her class. if not, then its easy enough to get through to fill a GE requirement.
She missed a whole months worth of teaching(4classes) then expected the class to make up for what she didn't teach us. Grouchy if you don't answer her ridiculous yes/no questions like a 2yr old, and says she is here to help us all pass the class but instead ended up ruining my gpa because of her absences and screwing up our 2nd exam. TERRIBLE PROF.
she is theeeeeeeeee best teacher ever! She is one of those kinds of teachers where, if you don't understand something, she won't get upset about it. She will go over and over and over with your question until you understand it/ But, don't ask her questions about stars and galaxies.....lol "im not a walking encyclopedia" was my favorite quote. great
She is an absolutely HORRIBLE teacher. I've had bad teachers before that I can handle, but she's the worst! She doesn't give study guides OR give you a review for any of the exams. She missed class a bunch of times and told the class to catch up. Worst class EVER.
She missed a few weeks of class, and we were behind a whole month from where we were supposed to be! She digresses SO much too! Nice thing though she drops lowest exam if the final is higher. And online quizzes can be taken multiple times, and they're always on the exam so great for studying. But overall excruciatingly boring.
If anyone likes her it's just this teacher writing on here. She is not helpful. She does loves Geology and is passionate about it but is not helpful and makes you feel dumb if you don't understand. Her tests are so difficult. Don't take it!!
She is very good just pay attention take lots of notes and get involved in the class
Ms. Brooks, tries to be everyone's buddy and then treats you like a 2nd grader. Took someone's cell phone away in class. I am a grown woman with three children. I asked her for clarification on this easy assignment I kept getting a 0 on because of grammatical errors? She seems to love power trips. I was so frustrated with her that I dropped.
Good Class, Grades Fair, I would take her again but I don't need any more science.
The key to the class is to take notes. If she says its important then it is. Tests are usually MC and you need to be prepared.
Good teacher, really fair. I plan on taking her again. Multiple choice exams. She wants you to read the book, but can pass exams with no trouble just using notes.
i am actually in the process of taking this class. But the teacher is very useless and dosent give a study guide for the exams. Her online quizes are really hard and even if u do well on them u get a bad grade. Wrost teacher i have had in a while. She is also very mean.
I wish I had read some of the comments before taking her class. I completely agree with everyone who rated her poorly. I talked to the director of the dept about it and he was very nice, but rather than continue to put up with her abusive ways in the classroom, I am going to withdraw from her class and take it with someone else.
do not take this professor. she is the most monotonous professor i've had at scc and thats saying alot. she tends to go off topic, and rarely helps you if you dont understand something. not worth it
Only take her class if you're ready to apply yourself. If you want a good grade, you have to earn it basically. MC tests, and quizzes. Take notes!! If she says its gonna be on the test make sure you study that.
One of my favorite professors at SCC. Speak up and you'll soon be a favorite. Take ALL the online quizzes and study what she says will be on the test because it WILL be on that test. I got a B but I was lazy with it and you don't really need the textbook. Take her for lab with it and you'll pass for sure.
I enjoyed her class. she is very fair and direct. If she says to study it, it'll be on the test. If I had done all on the on-line quizzes I could of had an A. I'd take her again, but I don't need any more science.
Kind of eccentric, but really nice. Made science interesting. Not a terribly easy class but i enjoyed her. and i don't like science.
She has a really monotone voice, hard to keep you focused because you'll end up so bored and dazing off. Its straight lecture every class. Take good notes. Tests are hard. Wouldn't recommend her, she's not very nice anyways.
One of my favorite teachers. Very good at explaining the subject/teaching & cares about her students - go to her office, she'll give you her time. She made me love coming to class. Very clear & gives you all the info needed to do well on her tests. Also good sense of humor, and she has real-life experience working in her field.
lectures are dull but she tells some jokes that are not really funny. the test are hard but if you put in time to study your notes you will do fine. i learned to really like this class. its not so bad
The class was interesting. She is a very straight forward teacher. Do the quizzes that she assigns weekly, she gives you two trys and they are all open book/open note on blackboard. make sure to not miss class or you will fall behind or miss the notes. She tells you excatly what is going to be on the test(diagrams, list of terms and essay questions)
she was super nice! made sure we knew how we were doing in the class. sadly, she had a bad semester with me so she canceled a lot which made exams really difficult. lectures were boring, but we went on two GREAT feildtrips!! all in all, she cares and is willing to help! i would say take her!
Professor Brooks is extremely nice on good days. She was terrible at returning graded assignments so as a student you really had to guess your grade the entire semester. She covers certain topics in depth, but not in others. However if you do the labs and show up every day, it doesn't really matter if you don't do well on the midterm and final exam
Great teacher, I got an A in the class. Lectures are interesting and the exams are primarily from the lectures. Little book use. I recommend taking her.
9 short tests with different styles of questions. Study! she is an excellent speaker and nice. explains the notes very well and does human examples. If you do better on the final than your lowest test she replaces it. No homework. Must attend lecture since 90% of that is on the test and the rest is out of the book. makes class fun and interesting.
This class was really easy. The teacher is nice but really boring. As long as you take notes and study, you will definitely pass.
She is a bit kooky with her lectures (incorporates hand movements for the class to copy to better understand the subject & adds interesting historical stories) and strongly encourages all to come speak to her for help with the course. Participate actively, study for quizzes, and you'll receive an A. No homework, either.
Had no interest in Geology but Brooks kept me fairly interested. She is helpful and good at explaining the material. Don't need the book if you attend class and take lots of notes. She tells you the main things that will be on the exam. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL THE QUIZZES!!! I could have gotten an A if i did all of them (got a C). Don't skip any!
Her class was annoying and I just wanted too go home right away. Before and after class were the best parts getting to talk to the friends I made.I hardly learned anything and most of what I did was trivial anyways.
The class was interesting but I did not get why the test had essay type question thought it was overkill for an intro class. Test were not too terribly difficult aside from the essay questions, but you do need to put some study time in. Take good notes. If you try you can manage a A or at least a B.
Cancelled class 4 times which threw us off course for the semester. Was very rude to some students if they would ask a question or didn't understand something. Tests were kind of hard. If you didn't write exactly what she wanted on the essay ?s you would get little to no points. Don't take this class with this professor.
Brooks is a great teacher, I especially like that she uses slide shows so that everything is clear and then uses "stupid human tricks" which are dorky demos to help you remember things. I also appreciates that she talks about how to succeed in school; it shows that she really cares. However Don't get on her bad side... Yikes
If you don't have to please don't take her. Go to SAC! Her saying,"There are two answers to each question, choose the best one." Its impossible. She is not only cold towards students but give no extra credit nor homework so its all based off of exams.
Debbie really cares about geology and you can tell she loves this subject. But she makes the class harder than it needs to be. The tests are either really hard or really easy, it just depends on the topic. You need to take all the quizzes online and study them for the test and final exam. You lose points for being absent.
Do not take any classes with her! She is very rude and cold towards students. Sometimes she can be completely disrespectful. Some of her lectures are interesting though. If you have a choice, choose a different teacher!
1) Tests only 2) STUDY, and anything complicated will be on test (just use powerpoint and lecture notes) 3) PARTICIPATE 4) Ask questions at office hours, not class 5) She'll prob be late or miss a class or two, but if you're late, you'll hear about it 6) She means well, and isn't that hard, but she can be direct which may come off harsh at times.
Debbie's lectures were thorough for the most part, but at times she could be a little vague. She let you know the most important parts of the test, but she didn't give out study guides at all. If you take good notes and study them well you can do well on the test. It is also pretty important to do the quizzes cause they really affect your grade.
Teacher is terribly rude in my opinion. I was warned that she can be sassy, but I think rude is much more fitting. If you add a comment to her lecture or anything like that, she will shut you down and say that she was getting to that, or that you're stealing her thunder in a rude tone. Overall, hated the class and had trouble listening
She is very passionate about the subject, because of that she focuses too much time on some sections, aprox half our semester of material was covered in the last 2 weeks of class. She has knowledge and is willing to help if you need it! Do the online quizzes and STUDY! Slow Grader. I was stressed because I didn't know my grade the whole semester.
Horrible Teacher. She is rude, extremely sarcastic, and not helpful at all. Expect very rude comments and if you plan on emailing her, the likely response will be "Check Blackboard," and once you do you can see that its no help at all. Very unspecific, quizzes are nothing like the lecture notes. Many students whom I have talked to feel the same.
Professor Brooks is amazing. She is definitely passionate about the subject and therefore she is great at teaching it. Her lectures are great because she explains everything in detail and also gives real life examples, which helped me understand the concepts better. She is also really helpful and willing to help students!
Besides the powerpoints, you also have to take notes on what she's saying. By the time you finish writing down one thing she said, you miss five other key points. Not allowed to record what she says (no electronics except laptops maybe) No homework or study guides for exams. Cancelled class a few times and fell behind schedule. Yes, she's monotone
Professor Brooks is a wonderful professor. If you don't like her or find her class difficult then YOU are the problem, not her. Her lectures are clear and her test reflect exactly what she lectures. On top of that, she makes it known that she is available during office hours for anyone who needs additional help or clarification.
Deb is definitly one of the stranger professors. She has a huge variety of outside work expierience in many geology fields witch make for some intresting lecture tangents. She might seem rough around the edges but once you get to know her and the course it's truly not that difficult.
Great instructor. Very clear of what she expects of you. Very fair when it comes to grading. She wants to see you succeeding and doing well. Any negative reviews are generally younger students who want to turn her classroom into a high school. She does not tolerate nonsense so that may be the reason for some of these negative reviews. She was Great
She tells you most of the stuff thats on the test. The only hard part is that she gives you a lot of information during lecture and its a little much sometimes.
Great professor with tons of experience in life and her field overall. She tells some good insights of her past experiences in her field and it augments interest in her lectures. She has a extensive display of various rocks and minerals as well and lets the students handle them. Tests were 80% of the grade and 20% were homework/online quizzes.
My lab was very frustrating, though she does know her stuff and is very passionate, she seems to be annoyed by people taking her class who have little interest in the subject. It's a GE requirement most of us don't want to be there.. She is helpful but at times makes a 1 unit lab feel like a 3 unit lecture. Just take an anthropology lab instead.
Debbie is an amazing teacher. She gives great examples to explain difficult info and concepts throughout class. Debbie is not just a "lecturing teacher", she genuinely wants her students to understand the information she teaches before she moves on. Free online textbook. Show up to class- lot of info that can be confusing without explanation.
The absolute worst professor I ever had. Extremely unorganized. Did NOT grade any labs or homework until grades were due. Awful lectures. Her note taking style is only efficient for herself, not her students. Expect to hear at least 5 tangents a day while note taking. Labs were never explained beforehand. Avoid this professor!! Would give a zero.
It takes a lot of nonsense from a professor to make me quit, but Ill say, professor Brooks is passionate about her work and it shows when people are disrespectful. Pay attention, write everything she says in the lecture, study everything she lectured about because there is no study guide. Overall a decent class and actually learned Geology.
The class was tough, but I remember a lot of what I learned from it. She gave me a lot of great tips during and after class. She also gave me some great tips for helping my students understand content through the use of demos and different learning styles. This is a hard class, but if you put the work into it, you can pass.
Not a great teacher at all. She cancelled many classes due to being sick, but after reading other reviews it seems like a pattern. She definitely has a passion for geology but should not be teaching it. Many of her students feel like she talks down to us and will throw a fit if you don't verbally answer as a whole class.
A bit of a messy semester due to inconveniences within her family so a good amount of classes were cancelled. Overall fun class if you pay attention and have a good group/partner. Do the mandatory reading or you will struggle.
