She runs the CIS200 dept and is very uptight and downright mean
overall, just a bad teacher.

Just not fun....and is no help at all....just no good

Rude, mean, and nasty at times..needs to learn manners. Course is unorganized.
unreasonably inflexible and difficult grader. hates to give out As.
She is a terrible lecturer and not willing to help at all
The class wasn't that difficult. She, however, is quite difficult.
Not easy, but not mean or rude. Be respectful.
Class is completely unorganized. She is rude obnoxious voice &made me feel stupid
this class was a tabacle
asking for help is taken as a sign of weakness
Mean, VERY VERY ANNOYING. Go back to New Yawk.
Takes the 8:15 broom to work. This woman is more concerned with making sure everyone is paying attention to her than actually teaching the material. Way too much attitude.

She is horrible and doesnt even show up for all the classes. Listening to her is like listening to Fran Drescher scream into a mic for 2 hours, thats not a joke
she is very boring, and thinks you're stupid if you ask for help. get someone else's labs for her class and you should be fine.
gross is on a mission to send more students to academic misconduct than any other prof or dept. she puts hidden codes in the lab files so that copies from previous qtrs are easy to spot.
When I took her I did fine. Its a pretty labor intensive class. Only go to her for help if you're a confident person and will back up why you think the way you do. If you treat it like a math class you'll be fine
This lady is plain nasty. She's horrible, rude, mean, and terrible. She excuses her horrible behavior as a reulst of her "new york" upbrining, but it's a scapegoat for her to act like a total ****. Even her colleagues have noted their disgust fo

I thought she was really interesting!
She's terrible, annoying, and unhelpful
When I see her I want to puke. To say that I hate her would be an understatement. She is very organized but also very hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. If you haven't been exposed to excell then you will likely fail, just like me. Thanks a lot Gross!
Basically, some people aren't fit to teach. Her class is insanely hard and her attitude with helping students is disgusting. She expects people to just know what she does and if you don't it seems to offend her.

What can I possibly add to all the others? The only way to describe her: Evil Incarnate.
I'm a computer geek so I thought this class was going to be a breeze. NOT! Her goal is to complicate everything you do. Learning Excel is not hard, learning Excel from Gross is near impossible. Her last name sums up her style, GROSS!
She was really nice....actually helped me get a job after the class was over
Really not bad; she actually tried to make the class fun. Easy to talk to.
Overheard her tell a grader to go back and take off more points b/c final exam average was too high. WTF?
One of the worst teacher I ever had. I got an A in the midterm. Did fine on the final and ended up with a C+ in the class. How did that happen? She is very unapproachable. If you ask me, she is just mean!!!

She sucks!

I had worked in IT for 4 years before coming to OSU and enrolling in this (necessary for major) class. Despite my in depth knowledge of MS Office, I managed to get a C, I suspect because I demonstrated one of her examples wrong. What a ****! Stay away
Awful woman; cold, unapproachable, rude and just plain arrogant. She's the coordinator of the class, and it makes perfect sense when you see how UNORGANIZED and UNREALISTIC the class is. She needs to crawl back in the hole she came from.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE are the only 2 words for this woman.
Imagine this: Fran Drescher shorter, fatter, and screaming into a microphone for TWO HOURS about excel formatting and database querying. Do you STILL want to take this class??
I hated this class. She just seemed mean. The midterm was incredibly hard. She is not very clear in teaching, I got more out of reading the book. What's the point of having a class on computers if we have to take a test with paper and pencil?Avoid

the WORST teacher I've come across at OSU. Don't ask her any questions, cuz she won't know the answer and she'll start yelling at you. She is very mean and has an attitude.
Why is this woman still teaching? She's awful. I hate to resort to insults, but she's like an evil gnome from some low budget horror movie..avoid her at all costs unless you want nightmares of her screechy voice and awful NYC accent going on about some excel function.
Tuition dollars being wasted on her. Often gets confused when the problems dont work out like they should, and will get distacted by flickering lights or flashy objects. She should not be permitted to procreate and may God have mercy on her soul.

Take advantage of office hours. She is very willing to help people that are interested in learning. Huge Curve compared to other CIS classes.
Very easy to listen to if you like loud, obnoxious, New Yorkers. Doesn't seem to be able to figure out HOW to use computers, just basic facts. Also outwardly liberal, which was annoying to me. Livable, but not the best professor.
I enjoyed this class, I didn't think it was too hard, you will learn how to use excel and access. Attend class, and pay attention, and you should be fine. Also, use your lab consultants, they are really helpful
horrible
I didn't find out about this site until after I took CS&E 200 with Mrs. Gross, and I'm shocked to see some of the ratings here. Personally, I thought Mrs. Gross was a great teacher. She's nice, has a good sense of humor, and is very willing to help you. Tests were a bit tough, but overall a good
Avoid at all cost. Her tests are impossible. Probably the worst teacher I've had here.
Good teacher on a personal level, BUT her Midterms/Final are ridiculously DIFFICULT (I was literally sweating on the final even though I studied well).
good teacher, but the fact that they test computer skills with paper tests defeats the purpose in my opinion.
hard class no matter who teaches it
I think Gross is such a sweetheart. She is very willing to help--very kind and funny. The class itself is difficult but if you keep up with the work and actually go to class, you should be fine. No excuse to get worse than a C.
Beginning of the course is pretty difficult, if you're not familiar with Excel and Access. Would not recommend this teacher, was not really helpful in explaining me my test scores and grades unfairly. I've met better cse teachers that teach more effectively.
exams are difficult to prepare for because computer skills are tested with paper and pencil. yes, that means memorizing computer formulas and syntax. great if you're a computer programmer, but a poor way to teach other students! (note to OSU computer science dept. :TEACH and TEST computer skills on the COMPUTER!!!)
Very boring, very obnoxious grading standards, not a fun class. Debbie is not a good professor. Much better CSE 200 profs are available...
she was awful. i had a conflict i couldnt be in class for that was completely reasonable and she wouldnt work with me on it.
I feel bad for the people that will have Debbie Gross next quarter. Her class cannot get harder. She wrote the book and manual and she gives very hard quizes and exams. I most def. recommend future CS & E students to have Mallon or the other prof. She is a tough little lady.

I think she is a great teacher and very helpful. She doesn't care if you sleep in class, it is your job to learn the material. She gives alot of extra credit. My only problem with her is that I got an 89.9 in the class and it was a B+. For all that work I deserved an A-!
Please take someone else if you want a better grade and some knowledge.
I thought her class was pretty easy, however she just didn't seem too helpful
she tends to create fear for the subject rather than excitement about learning something new.
Many don't like her but if you give yourself enough time to do the labs well and study the practice exams you'll do fine. She is actually very nice and willing to help you, you just have to ask.
FOR THE SAKE OF GOD, DONT TAKE HER.
shes a know it all and has higher expectations than other professors. avg midterm score in her class was a 77%. If that many people are sucking what does that tell you
The class material really is not that difficult but if you're not familiar with access or excel you might have a hard time. The quizzes were pretty hard but if you understand everything you can do well and the tests are fairly reasonable. Still, I would definately take another professor over her.
She takes attendance at lectures but I don’t know how much that weighs on your grade. She knows everything and will help you if you go and see her. Her quizzes are the hardest part of the class but if you do the practice exercises you will be fine on them. ALWAYS DO THE EXCERCISES, and this class won't be that bad! Labs are easy and you get help
omg....i just hate her 4ever, she is aweful! dont ever think to take her class!
Surprisingly short = ) Very bright and knows her stuff. Was always available to help me out with any problems I had and even worked with me when I had to miss a test. Gives extra credit opprotunities.
From what I heard, CS&E200 was going to be very difficult, and I had not previously worked with excel or anything, but she wasn't very hard at all and I did not put anymore effort into the class than needed. I would advise taking her, she was very nice and extremily helpful in everyway!
Professor Gross is a VERY difficult teacher. She knows her stuff and assumes (during her lectures) htat all of her students know their stuff too. BUT if you use her office hours she is an amzingly nice woman and will help you with whatever you need. Stay on top of your work and DONT CHEAT! you will get caught...
This class was really hard. Debbie is very smart, but sometimes I think she forgets that her students don't know the material like she does. She is willing to help, but b/c she's the course coordinator, I wouldn't suggest her. She grades on a curve with each class receiving a seperate curve,w/her class getting the smallest one.
Horrible. There is no reason why you should have to make a class this difficult. The TA's are helpful (some of them that can speak English and are cool) but she is horrible. Had to take it 2 times, 2nd is easier.
Good teacher. Material can be difficult. If you don't get it she can answer any and all questions. All the people who tell you not to take her didn't try and probably had to take it twice because they failed.
Very hard, she is a graduate of MIT and seems to think that we should be on that level. I was not prepared for the very difficult quizzes. The labs took most of the time and were not worth very many points.
she is the rudest professor you'll ever meet on earth. being a professor does not give you any rights to treat your students like garbage. gross should have earned a "manners' degree" first. all the good comments on here were written by either her or her kids.
I don't care whether she went to mit or some technical institute. just sooooooooo rude. she disgraces all the graduates of mit, period.
don't let people intimidate you about difficulty of the class is a a lot of work but help will be provided if need be, if you put in the work you will earn a good grade, the material is certainly learn able
This class is not that hard but it's time consuming. Expect to spend at least 5 hrs a week on the pre labs. Debbie isn't that bad, she was always very approachable and nice towards me. If you are a Bus major you will use this stuff, I learned a lot. CSE=NOT(OR(FUN, EASY) You'll learn that later ha ha
This is the worst professor to teach at OSU!!! She is so rude and talks down to the students. You learn nothing in this class and would advise you to take it with Mallon, she is so much nicer. Very unapproachable and I will leave it at that!!
Take someone else, she makes the class nearly impossible, she is head of the department and wrote the book, therefore she thinks she runs the world. take mallon or reeves, they are the best, if you take gross you will regret it
her name says it best, GROSS, thats all she is. she is the worst teacher at osu, her tests are impossible in comparison to the other teachers, she makes you learn things you will never need to know of use, she makes you learn how the internet works and thins an excel course! DON'T TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so, i got an A- in this class and hated every min of it. the class has useful concepts, but gross makes them worthless. she has to be the worst teacher at osu. DONT TAKE HER!!!! take mallon. this class made me hate my life, bottom line gross is horrible dont let anyone fool you, and this class sucks no matter what.
Debbie makes herself plenty available to help. Her slides are in the course notes (just buy it). Do the examples, check your answers with the online book, and you'll be prepared for quizzes & tests. Labs take time, but you can get full credit easily.
Class wasn't to bad. Requires alot of work. Must use book. Buy the course notes they will help you only like $26. The text book is big and bulky but the access code is required so you must buy it new
very long and comprehensive tests. It sucked, a lot.
Don't be a slacker. Just do the work. Study. Succeed. This is a college course. Its not as hard as people are making it out to be.
This class is not easy at all. However if you attend class, do the work and stay on top of the material you will do alright. Gross does a good job of teaching and has a no nonsense attitude. She is very helpful and willing to help her students. While the book is very expensive, required and not very helpful. But the spiral book is very helpful.
No matter what teacher you have for this class, unless you LOVE computers, will SUCK. She is very helpful if you go to her office hours, and truly wants you to learn. Make sure you give yourself enough time to finish the pre-labs. Do ALL practice exams in the workbook.
she is much harder than the other teachers by far. Friends took other teachers and theirs was a joke by comparison. the only advantage you get by taking her is that she makes the final so everyone else fails and you do ok. If you can, take someone else. If you dont, get ready for worst experience of your life, you do learn a lot though.
Don't know why so many guys hype her as a tough prof. She's definitely better than terrible Michelle, who always creates nervous atmosphere during lec&quiz. Debby is a tiny old lady with a huge sense of humor. Hilarious in class, normal questions in quizzes. Never wanna fail you with tricky questions. Just lots of people are intimidated by her cour
Terrible instructor. Period. Do not take her class. She is very annoying and very mean if you get to know her.
Topics taught in this class aren't designed to be hard, the way it's taught and assessed makes it hard. Quizzes and Exams are long and tough, and little mistakes will knock you down to a B before you know it. PreLabs take 3 to 4 hours on average just to complete, and you barely finish labs in class with the amount of work and thinking required.
This class sucks and is aweful. Makes it hard to understand and moves so fast that it is hard to keep up with everything. Pre labs suck and the labs are time consuming that are worded weird where something simple seems difficult. Everyone I talk to hates this class.
She is helpful over email, but it is hard to understand what she says during lecture because the class is so big. You have to buy an online textbook and course notes, about $125 all together. She provides practice problems and sample midterms/finals. This class will occupy a lot of your time but it's not too difficult.
She is the hardest teacher I have ever had. I spent on average 7-8 hours a week trying to learn and complete the material. Every question on the test and quizzes is worded terrribly which is meant to trick and confuse you. Every little mistake such as a comma error or a wrong parenthesis will result in almost all the points marked wrong. HARD!!!!
Very difficult teacher. Her grading is very inconsistent and largely unfair. Practice problems are wildly different than quiz/exam questions. Be prepared to work your butt off for this class. Goes through material very quickly and not thoroughly & lectures are boring.
Hardest class I've had at OSU so far. And it's not cause she is a great teacher and trying to make you think. She explains everything in a confusing fast way. The text and all the quizzes and exams labs and pre labs are worded terribly. Spent way to long on pre labs even though grading is all in the exams and quizzes basically.
This class is hard, but not impossible. It is a serious time commitment. I spent a minimum of 5 hours outside of class a week, but if you put in the time and effort, you can succeed. Debbie is hard, but she is also the course coordinator so she writes the exams. Thus, she can prepare you really well! I would recommend her over other CSE professors.
Tough class, got a B+. Take the prof that guarentees 20% get A's. I'm fairly confident Gross doesn't do that. She is the course cordinator and I have heard from upperclassmen gross gives the lowest grades... If you want to learn alot take her though, she is actually very good teaching wise.
She was very clear with her notes and lectures, they actually kept me interested in a fairly dull subject. I would recommend taking her.
Gross may be a little intimidating, but she is actually a decent person and does do a great job of explaining the material. This class is not all that it is cracked up to be. Go to class, don't procrastinate on your pre-labs, and do a little studying. If you stay ahead of the game and put in a little extra work, the class is actually easy.
I felt as though she did a great job covering the course material. I had heard terrible things coming into the class, but she turned out to be approachable and helpful.
Debbie was the course coordinator but we had a guy (Bob?) as our lecturer. The course now is called CSE 1211 I think. Debbie was fair and listened to us complain about the lecturer - he was just plain awful. She gave as many tips as possible but this is definitely a more self-motivated class. DO THE LABS AND HOMEWORK EARLY! This class is worth it!
