Inspirational instructor. Opened my eyes to issues I never realized. She is amazing.
One of the greatest professors I have come in contact with. She is great!
Amazing professor. Really interested in how student is doing and devoted to help them do well. I highly recommend her Social Marketing Capstone for any senior confused on which one to take.
very nice lady. The class was easy because she encouraged us to speak our opinion. It was a lot of writing, but it was by no means hard. If you have a chance to take the Beyond War senior capstone, do it! It's only two hours per class, and there is no activity outside of class!
Great Teacher, very intellectual and helpful. Highly recommended
Excellent capstone teacher. Will be there for your project if you need guidance. She knows the field and teaches with warmth.
Less annoying that other capstones. A lot of writing involved. Get in a bigger group for the project.
First half of the class is textbook oriented but the 2nd is all group presentations. You get to choose your grading system, so you can do all homework and take all tests and write research paper, instead of doing presentations. Exams are from book/groups. 2nd half is all bonus points to be added to exams just for being present. EASY!
The Living Beyond War Capstone is awesome and Debbie's teaching style and ability are the tops! I would highly recommend this Capstone and this instructor.
Exams are simple, Mostly based on the textbook~(bigger pic)Teacher is polite.
It was a class half online half in classroom. You really needed to show up to understand how she did things online... if you didn't then you missed points and dropped your grade.
I took this course in 4 weeks, and Debbie was an awesome teacher. She made sure that everyone knew the material. Reading the book was really helpful, and it's not a terrible textbook either. There was online work and quizzes. The midterm and final were both based off of the slides and the quizzes.
I took this class as a hybrid-half online, half in class. It's a great time saver, and Debbie is an excellent professor to be teaching this format! I found the class interesting, fun, and extremely easy. I think I had over 100% of the points at the end of the term, and although I kept up on the readings and assignments, I didn't study for a test.
If this class is not mandatory for you do not take it. The amount of online work is insane seeing that it is a f2f class/graded on attendance. 13 quizzes, 8 discussion posts, have to read all the text, and have a outside book reading assignment/another disc. 2/ 1000word summaries. 1 about your reflection of the term completing self serving of her.
Not recommended. Topic was interesting but I didn't like Kaufman; she had no idea what was going on in groups; the groups were bad idea overall. I did 80 percent of the presentation work, worked with two different groups for the community service part (one person I worked with was extremely unpleasant) and I got a "B" in the class! Very unfair.
This class is fantastic. Debbie is knowledgeable and thought provoking. Expectations are reasonable and made clear throughout the class. Best professor use of d2l I have experienced. Highly recommend both this course and Debbie!
Great teacher! Debbie is probably the easiest grader i've had, she also is very organized and it's easy to stay on track. She utilizes the D2L to the fullest, as long as you follow that everyday, your almost guranteed a A. The textbook is easy to read and she has alot of guest speakers. Take this class for an Easy A!
Great professor! She cares a lot about student success. This class was a hybrid class, so all the discussions were online and she posted all the powerpoints online. I would recommend her for any drug class.
Very good class, easy to succeed if you do the work. Lectures are quite dry and pretty boring but she brings in a few guest speakers to livin' things up. Good class overall!
Typical required university class. I learned more from the choice book selection than I did from the text book. Assignments aren't terribly difficult, although the reflection paper on your own preformance, and arguably the largest assignment was irritating to write. Isn't that why I'm paying tuition? To have her grade my work?
Most boring class I have ever taken. She makes her lectures very boring, I drifted to sleep almost every time. Although her grading criteria is clear, she is a very harsh grader on discussions. Much more work than a typical cluster course, and I would avoid. If you have hours of free time, and like boring lectures, this is for you.
Debbie is miserable, her lectures are nothing additional to what are on the slides. She requires an insane amount of online discussion posts weekly, even though this is NOT an online or hybrid course. Her TA does all the grading, and incorrectly often. I had to have my grades altered several times. Due dates are unclear, and she is generally awful.
A horribly awful teacher. Read her power-points word for word, often times she just took them from someone else. When asked questions about the material she would often not know or jut repeat the power point slide. A crazy amount of weekly discussions. I would not recommend her. Most of the stuff was graded by the TA who was even less helpful.
Based on writing reflections. Encouraged critical thinking. Covered tons of helpful and relevant material. No tests! Debbie is so sweet and passionate about public health!
Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot from this class but mostly through guest speakers and my own research. If you are looking for an easy A class, search somewhere else. My biggest pet peeve was that 99.9% of our work was online. Why not make the class fully online or a hybrid. Waste of time to come to class but you MUST come for credit.
My only real complaint here is that ALL the grading is done by the TA, while I experienced no issues; I prefer my professor to grade my work. Course load is average for a 300 level class and as long as you take personal responsibility for this there's NO reason not to pass this course. Learned a ton from the book and lecture.
If you want a easy A? take this class! there are lot of online discussion and online quizzes, but it was easy, you just need to do it. Debbie is a easy grader, so as long as you do your work and show your afford, you will get an A.
Pretty annoyed of this class. I think class would be great if she didn't deduct participation points. Attended class everyday but yet, only get 75% participation points. She expect you to participate all the time, which is unnecessary sometimes. Topics are boring. Lots of writing and reflections.
Unfortunately she is very disorganized. Her assignments are simple but the directions are kind of out there. She's nice and doesn't grade tough but there's a lot of little work to do in this class. I feel like I didn't really learn anything from this class that I didn't already know. She is big on participation and you won't pass if you don't show.
I learned a lot in this class but we had to read 4 books total. Many writing assignments on those books & D2L discussions are required with weekly quizzes online. This probably won't be as bad if the TA didn't grade everything. You never meet the TA in person, she grades slow, and her feedback are not specific enough for you to improve.
Debbie comes across as she knows about the subject but her lectures are all over the place. She has the mentality that no one deserves a 10/10 on any assignment no matter how hard you work. not respectful towards people with learning difficulties and just plain decides to ignore them and belittle them in class 3 books cover to cover. Horrible prof.
The class itself is very interesting and I learned a lot. However, she is an extremely tough grader and hardly gives you even a 9/10 despite putting effort and time into each of her many, many assignments. There's up to 4 discussion posts and 3 quizzes each week. Four books to read, about 4 essays, and a cumulative final, no notes.
Lots of reading, 4 different books. Choice book report from her list. Must do wkly discussion post and respond to atleast 3 people a week. Everything must be lengthy or you dont get full credit. 3 quizzes a week first half of term. Lots of lectures, material to go over every week. Over 300 points at the end but overall decently easy material
Her directions are incredibly vague. She also anticipates that you are going to read over 100+ pages over the weekend (one of those teacher who think you aren't taking other 400 level classes) beware of her online quizzes they're incredibly difficult. Tons of little time wasting things to do a long with 2 big papers. Only teacher who teaches this.
Worst online class ever! Doesn't give you full credit for discussions and there's 5 a week. Makes you watch her videos of her talking and they're terrible! Extremely painfully boring. Do not take her!
Do not take this class if you have the chance to avoid it. She has four different syllabi and every single on of them is extremely vague. She also has you read four different books. Her TA's grade everything and leave vague feedback. She was extremely unhelpful, belittling, and rude when confronted with concerns and critiques on her class.
I had no problem getting 100%'s. However, this class requires reading 4 books, writing 4 essays, multiple quizzes every week (with only 10 minutes to take them), discussions, and terrible lectures. There are no transcripts, and the slides are very vague and leave out most of the information. The work load isn't the problem, the course content is.
She has so much homework and expects you to go above and beyond for that 10/10 score if you do no show that there is no way you will get 10/10. DO NOT take her class.
Five discussion posts a week: 1 Q&C, 2 of your own posts, 2 responses. Two lowest quiz scores dropped, and two of lowest discussion post scores dropped. To pass the classes, you MUST read the readings closely. One paper based on the book, one final paper. The readings get repetitive, and there is a lot of reading, but good class overall.
Debbie is really strict on any little thing. She will mark you down if you are 5 minutes late and will knock off your participation point. She also has you create a "name tag" and passes out endless amounts of papers that you dont even use in class longer than 10 min. Her quizez are timed short and takes a lot time to do. I would NOT RECCOMENT HER!
I don't recommend this professor because she is boring and will take off points off your attendance when you arrive late or leave early. I felt like she was very entitled when speaking about public health and that we (as a class) weren't in the "group". Her quizzes are tough and won't budge when giving you a better grades on any of the assignments
Debbie is one of the worst professors I've had during my years in college. She gives points off if you're even a bit late regardless of whether or not you let her know ahead of time. Her lectures are boring and lengthy. She gives unnecessary handouts and makes you have a nametag every class. Only take her if there is no other option
I only made an account specifically to rate this professor. Hardest professor I have ever had in 2 universities that I have been to. Never take her unless you have to. HARSH grader, does not give second chances if any mistakes are made. Only 1 bonus assignment at the end of term. Just DO NOT take her.
Debbie is great. Yes, you will have to read a couple articles per week for quizzes and read a book to write a paper on, but it is all really interesting and helpful if you take the time to really read. She is passionate about her field, and appreciates discussion and individual thought. Work hard, and you will be rewarded.
Repetitive and redundant lectures. There are a lot of readings for each week but the assignments pertaining to the material are not difficult. Kaufman will also have students write a Switch Application paper and the instructions are poorly written; despite your understanding of the book, she will reduce points. Just another average professor.
Debbie's online classes are a breeze as long as you do all the assignments. She gives us a ton of reading but they are not textbooks and are both easy to follow and have great story lines. Put forth the effort to get a good grade and you will.
Took PHE275 stress management online class. It's a 200 level class I felt like there's way too much work. Weekly online posts and a final paper around 8 pages. SOO much reading every weekly definitely don't feel like a 200 level class. Overall weekly assignments/course objectives are clear though
Very anal about not letting you use technology (computers even) inside of class unless you are disabled. Very egotistical, narrow-minded teaching style and asking questions is an affront to her. Spent a lecture preaching about understanding POC's struggle because she has a mixed-race daughter. Would not take again.
Do NOT take her class. This professor seems as though she has a good heart, but clearly doesn't understand that students are taking other classes besides her own. If you are full time and work prepare to not have a life. She assigns up to 115+ pg of reading for just one week, along with homework from the readings every day and more hw's and quizzes
I really liked this online class. There is more reading than any other class I have taken in the last 3 years, but the material is really interesting. Make sure you complete everything in the modules, and do the optional quizzes because it will prepare you for the exams.
I've never done so much reading in my life, actually, I didn't even read all 3 of the books she assigns for the term. You have to read 3 books and do 1 essays on each of them which are all due at the end of the term and then a final essay and a midterm. She's a tough grader on the discussion post as well.
It wasn't a hard class but lots of busy work. You have to read 3 books and write papers on them. Discussions every week along with 3 comments.
DO NOT take this class if your are a full time students and are also working. There are 4 whole books she assigns to read along with paper reflections on each one that require more than 1000 words for each one. On top of all the readings there are assigned discussions weekly. Absolutely regret taking this class, save yourself the stress-headache.
If you take this class online in the summer, get ready for zero days off in 4 weeks and a full time job between the reading, essays, and discussions. Most work I have ever done for a single class.
The syllabus states grading policies and those are not followed through. On every assignment there will be something wrong with what you wrote or your opinion. The grading is based off of her personal opinion, not your learning. I was really looking forward to this class, And now I am ending it very disappointed.
requires you to read 3 different books for the class, write a paper on each of them at the end of the term that are at least 4+ pages long each. discussion posts every week, along with 3 other posts required each week as well. midterm and final paper on top of the other papers for the class too. most reading/homework for any class ive taken so far.
Assignment expectations and grading system very unclear. Class has lectures, guest speakers, discussions, & videos. Guest speakers are good! Homework: readings (mostly from textbook), 2x/week reading responses, 1x/term present readings summary in class, 1x/term listen to podcast & summarize to class, poster project, final paper.
Took this as a summer class in 2019. Read 3 books with 1500 word essays on each. Discussion posts literally every other day. Midterm and final paper. If you work full time like me, do not take this as a summer class. A lot harder and more work than other 300 level classes. Concepts are interesting but instructor by far shouldnt be teaching this.
This class was very hard to understand in terms of expectations and the amount of reading was a lot for what I thought was going to be a simple 200 level class. The class actually really stressed me out- and it is all about stress management! The online format was not straightforward and I found myself confused by the syllabus as well.
I took PHE 275 online. The workload is fairly average for an online class. However, the main issue with the class is how Kaufman will shave off points on every assignment, making it difficult to get an A. She offers 12 points of extra credit and you will need all of them to have a chance. EXTREMELY tough grader.
She's a really tough grader for no reason, even in the middle of a pandemic. This is a 200 level class and its harder than any 400 level class I've taken. This class is about stress management yet shes caused me the most stress this term out of all of my professors. I wont ever take another class from her.
Took her in the middle of the Pandemic and she wasn't understanding at all. She seemed more worried about herself than her students. Assignments still required you to interact with people. Due to her having to do the class online she required 9 discussion postings because she felt we were getting out easy.
It's ironic that she teaches the Stress Management elective because it will be the most stressful class you have. She offers a lot of good material and you learn a lot if you have the time to read 100-200 pages/week. Very discussion and assignment heavy. She means well but it can be very overwhelming. Don't take if your schedule is already packed.
Not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. She was really understanding during the pandemic. Class is super easy, the only "hard" thing was reading 3 books. Have to do weekly discussion posts, 3 papers (1 for each book), a midterm (all multiple choice), and a final which is 3 mini essays. You can easily get an A, great elective choice.
She was super understanding considering everything that is happening right now which was much appreciated. Lot's of reading but if you manage your time it's not super bad. I wouldn't take this class if you have a heavy load. Overall, not a hard class just a lot of assignments.
She is a tough grader, and her feedback on your work is awful.
Im sure shes a nice person, but never before in my 4 years of college has a professor made me complete so much pointless homework. She forces you to answer questions with a minimum of 10 sentences and some of these questions are simple yes or no questions. Steer clear if youre looking for something easier.
Debbies previous reviews infuriated me. She is an amazing professor. Its a heavy load, she does require a ton of reading & writing, this is an upper division course so it should be expected. Only test is 1 midterm and its easy. Shes well organized, even in the middle of the pandemic. The books she require are amazing and thought provoking.
Pretty amazing how much little consideration she has for us and our time. She treats the class like it's the only one we're taking. Lots and lots of writing and repetitive work. It's very unrealistic for how much time we should be spending on this class. It's all easy work, but if you have a busy life, you're not gonna do well.
This lady is nuts. Assigned 1 switch paper that required 2000-2500 words, a final paper that has repetitive questions. Outdated articles 1994-1999 to read. Asked for a recorded lecture, refused, told other students weren't interested so no. I felt she withheld information for being a teacher. Advertise that she teaches other courses. DO NOT TAKE
You have to read a book that you will write a paper on at the end of the term. You also have to read/watch hours of other information to do weekly discussions (5 post minimum). Zero feedback given. No lectures, which a lot of this stuff could have been taught to save time for students who are also taking other courses. Do not recommend.
This was my second class with Debbie. Ridiculous amount of reading. Her stress management/fat studies classes are easy to fake and do half the work while maintaining an A, but the final papers are obscene. The word count for final essay in stress management is 6000, fat studies is 3000. Just do yourself a favor and take a different elective class.
This is a professor that will tell you that you followed an assignment's directions perfectly and that there is nothing wrong with your work, and then will still give you a 9/10. This professor expects "above and beyond" the requirements, but does not specify how to go there.
This is the second course I have taken with Debbie. While I'm typically a student that receives straight A's, she won't give you more than 80-90% unless you go above and beyond. She grades harshly and gives limited feedback. None of my papers received more than a C, and I've never experienced that with any other professor in my 3 years at PSU.
If youre going to take her class, start reading these books as soon as you read my comment: Dr. Harts High Price, Haris Chasing the Scream. You have to read 2 other books; Kuhn et. Als Buzzed, and another book you choose. The reading load is unreasonable for a 10 week course. That said, the material is good and will make you grow.
This is my second term taking Professor Kaufman, and I have had a phenomenal experience this term and the other! Her grading criteria and Class expectations are clear, and she does not overload you on work. As long as you are doing the readings and homework you are fine. If you dont you obviously won't do well, just like any other class.
Super heavy reading and writing assignments. It's crazy. Reading 4 books, articles, 4 discuss post/weekly in 10 weeks, heavy writing. I had options to take other course but was recommended to take this class. it was my worst decision ever. I'm a straight students. She is constantly give me low grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS HER.
Debbie provides little to no feedback for homework yet grades very harshly and expects you to go above and beyond for assignments. Having to read 4 books while watching videos to write reflections on. The workload isn't the main concern, it's more the style of teaching and expecting students to figure out where they went wrong on their own.
This is one of the most impactful courses that I have ever taken. You will learn a ton, but you should expect to read and write a lot. My advice is that you order the books early, and start reading during your break. I finished every book by Week 4, I knocked out the papers during Weeks 5 and 6, and then the rest was easy. Don't procrastinate.
Her workload is absolutely obscene and unrealistic for a student who does ANYTHING besides her one singular class. 3 required books (400+ pages each) and one extra book/video assignment in a term with addition. Her grading is unreasonable for good work and her midterm was completely unrelated to the study guide she provide.
Kaufman provides many different sources of learning, whether it's articles, excerpts from books, or videos for you to reflect on and participate with. Kaufman also provides thorough feedback & extra material that would ultimately benefit a student's growth & success. This class has been one of my favorite PHE courses that I often reflect on.
unprofessional, unethical, illiterate sums up deb
Kaufman was one of the hardest teachers ever. It is so hard to please her in any way. I only got a perfect score once in this entire term & even if she preaches being open, share our thoughts, etc., she always has comment to say about your own thoughts and perspective and then that's a loss of points. I lost all motivation for her class honestly.
Debbie has shown throughout this course that she is completely unqualified to teach. In fact, she doesn't teach at all, it's all self learning. She docks points for anything and doesn't provide any rubric for her assignments. Avoid this class at all costs, even for an elective. I recommend a professor that is actually competent at teaching.
This class had so many writing assignments with little to no instructions or rubrics. I rarely received full credit for an assignment because she always had some sort of feedback for everything. At the end of the term you have to write a final paper and each section should be 300 words but that it difficult when you are asked the same thing.
It just goes to show that portland state university cares nothing for their students, as long as they employee this person.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU LOVE LOVE LOVE READING. We read 4+ books over ONE term. Easy to pass if you literally have all the time in the world and aren't taking other classes. Luckily I only had 2 others (had to drop one thanks to the workload). Grading seems to be on a whim instead of based on rubrics. Good luck.
Class was ok. The material is simple, but there is a lot. Extensions are offered for papers. Midterm isn't that hard. The main text has no sources and some misinformation. Other books are very long for the information they contain. Most annoyingly you only get 90% if you do 100% of what was asked for, which is a terrible standard to teach students.
I suggest that no one take a class from this professor. There are no clear grading criteria (even though she claims there is) and the grading is based on interpretation. For example, one discussion where I missed 3 requirements I received a 7.5/10 and another discussion where I missed only 1 requirement I received a 3/10. No feedback is ever given.
