super boring, no expression whatsoever
The class is soo a Boring! o did i say it was boring! it really isn't interesting i would not recommend her to anyone.
Debbie is actually funny, she's not boring, had her in bi 111 and 112 she expects A LOT out of students but she is extremely intelligent and knowledgable of her subject so be prepared to work VERY hard!
I think she's hilarious. She explains the stuff in the lab that we were supposed to have learned in the class, and makes it ten times more interesting and comprehensible.
I liked Debbie alot. She always says all of these funny little things. Lecures are nice and short so there is lots of time to finish the lab and go home early.
I would not take this prof again simply because she is a "nobody's perfect" marker, and she will never, ever give out perfect marks. No matter what you do, if she has a say, you will never get 10/10. Otherwise, very personable, great stories, very interesting class.
She's okay. Very hard marker. Be prepared to work hard. Incredible personality though, very approachable. :)
Wow! Debbie is such a great instructor! Although she expects her students to work hard, she is always willing to help and give hints and she is very reasonable. I would recomend her labs above any others! btw. Ernest Kroeker is the best 111/112 prof you can ever hope to have.
Very nice to chat with, but a little tough with marking. Definitely knows about insects.
Debbie is wicked nice and she is a excellent teacher... shes an insane hard marker though.
This teacher is alright. Shes not the most exciting teacher. Shes a very hard marker. I wouldnt recommend her to anyone.

I love debbie, you always know what is going on in her class, unlike all the other labs, and she is extremely easy to talk to and always willing to help. Plus, shes a lot of fun.Yes she is a hard marker, but you learn to appriciate it, that is if your not a lazy student. I recommend debbie if you love bio, if you dont, then stick with someone else.
Her notes are very short but effective. She is a very hard marker but fair, so if you get a good mark on the labs and homework she hands back to you then you know you did a great job. I think Debbie could be more enthusiastic about teaching though.
Debbie is very nice and funny, but this course it brutal. The final was a monster of a thing, and there were three midterms and three assignments for the course, not including the lab midterms, assignments and finals. If you work really hard and study, you'll get a good mark, but anything less and you'll be in big trouble.
Debbie is great, she is very helpful and her notes are effective... they really do help.. what also helps is doing the online quizes with the weblink that comes with the text book it is great, it helps u grasp all the key points that debbie talks about and the ones she doesnt u can throw out :) she's a awesome prof and her marking is always fair!
Debbie is a great prof, her explanations of the subject matter relevant to the labs are very effective, and she keeps it interesting with her jokes! She's a tough marker but she's very approachable if you're having trouble. I strongly recommend her if you plan on going further with bio, but if not, it may not be worth the effort.
Tough Marker. Not very good at helping if you ask for it.
took her for both 111 and 112 bio labs she is a tough maker for sure every little detail is seen by her and i find her a little unfair b/c even the best presentations she gives a low A and it feels like you have to be GOD to get an A+ in her class but she is funny and you will have fun in her class if you have your friends in there to suffer with
I found Debbie to be a very nice teacher who really knew her stuff and is always willing to help if you need it. Although i am never taking her again becuase he tests are unbelievably hard, and the class average always seems to be very low. Its a shame becuase i did like her, but shes way to hard!
Debbie is a very nice prof who cares about her students. Her lectures are not too bad but the notes she writes on an overhead arent very useful. She is a semi-difficult teacher but very easy to talk to and will help you when you need it.
Great teacher, covers what you need to know, none of this "I give you some notes, and I test you on what I didn't cover from the chapter". Shes not here to trick you, but help you learn what you need to know.
Nice prof, but very hard marker. I thought I would enjoy this class alot more but she marks way too hard, and it's frustrating!
very hard marker....
She is a good teacher and very fair. Her lectures are amazing and very clear objectives and expectations. She explains things very well and she knows her stuff. The lab is hard but she will help you when you need it and she's a very fun and easy going teacher. Very easy to talk to and don't need the text at all. Interesting class for sure ;)
Wondeful lady and a wonderful teacher. Shes always there when you need extra help, and her lectures are very interesting. She clearly enjoys biology.
Debbie is extremely friendly and nice. Her lectures are thorough and concise. Plus, she has a lot of stories about the animals and plants she talks about (pictures on ppt slides are the ones she takes herself). Her midterms and final are ALL written. The only irritating thing is her marking which is a bit unfair. Marks off for too much/little info.
Debbie is a great lab prof and wants all her students to recieve. She is a hard marker, but is always willing to look at your work and help you find errors before it is due. Overall one of the best profs I have had and I am signing up for Bio 112 lab with her next semester
She has a british accent which may be hard to understand. Her online quizzes are tricky but all the answers are found on google. Midterms and finals are all written, and her powerpoint slides are very helpful when trying to review for midterms. Even though she loves bio, she expects her students to know some stuff... so know your stuff!
Debbie has a great sense of humour and she knows her stuff! Her midterms are extremely hard because they are all written. The online quizzes are the easiest part of the course. Overall she is a great teacher, and she will help you if you need help so go to her office hours!! I wouldn't recommend her to anybody who hates written tests!
Extremely hard marker. And she expects students to know things she didn't teach in class. No actual help provided when asked for. Quizzes on Blackboard can be looked up on google but since it is always down you have to try all day long to write them.
Debbie is a very harsh and unfair marker, if she doesnt like your wording you'll get marks off. Class averages are just disgusting. In order to get any kind of a decent mark you had to have everything correct but remember not to include too much or too little detail. This prof was way too picky on minor details especially for a first year course.
I had Debbie as my lecturer in Bio 111 and a lab instructor in 112. She is a great person and does teach you well, but be prepared because she is a hard marker!
She is a super nice and funny teacher and is helpful when you ask. However, she is an extremely tough marker and takes off marks for every little detail or if there is too much information or too little information. Also, she assigns a bunch of assignments which see impossible to get 100% on because of her tough marking! Final exam is ok but long!
Debbie's very passionate about her classes, especially about insects, which I find essential in a good learning experience. She does pack A LOT into the semester and likewise expects you to learn a lot. We had to drop three chapters and midterm because we didn't have enough time even though we only missed half a week. Shes a bit of a picky marker
Debbie's a great prof! I don't know why she has such low ratings. She's really funny and tries to make class engaging for everyone. She's super helpful all you have to do is ask and very clear on what she is expecting for lab reports and always tells you when you're having a quiz. Would definitely take a class with her again!
She was the perfect science teacher, nerdy lame science jokes included. Her marking is BRUTAL though!! Our lecture prof was so abysmal it was impossible to keep up. This class is A LOT of hard work!! But she was also very helpful and approachable and when walked in 2 hours late for class she let me write the quiz the next day. THUMBS UP!
I wouldn't say Debbie gives a ton of homework, but she tends to repeat herself in her lectures oppose to clarifying her points so be prepared to teach yourself. Very nice lady and clearly smart but isn't strong at transferring that knowledge to others, she doesn't use progressions in her teaching.
Debbie is smart but she makes herself rather inaccessible out of class hours. I'm a high A average student so I'm not saying what's about to follow out of a lack of motivation. Debbie loves homework and as a result you'll end up doing 5+ hours a week for each lab. Inconsistencies in making appointments and a condescending tone make her a tough sell
She's knowledgable, but isn't very good at putting the information into a beginners understanding. Looks for very specific answers on assignments and tests, and doesn't give very many marks for partially right answers.
Debbie's okay. She wants very specific things for her assignments and tests, so there is no possible way someone can get 100 on anything. All tests are written, and one of our averages was 49%. She's easy enough to pass, but don't expect a great mark.
Debbie is hilarious but a really tough grader. She expects you to know your stuff and know it well- which is probably a good thing. Her exams are very long and extensive- did not have enough to finish my final for her class. Other than destroying your mark she is a really good prof- as long as you know the material.
Debbie is a very nice professor. She makes her classes interesting, and she is funny. However, this class was overly difficult. She is a tough grader and expects you to learn concepts quickly and on your own. I would not take a class with this professor again.
SHE IS SUCHA HARD MARKER. AVOID IF POSSIBLE. I am not a bio student.I would study 4-5 days for a midterm worth 5%.Left the midterm feeling-I JUST NAILED IT BUTTTT ended up getting 60%! And she doesn't even show you the midterm afterward AND the final is cumulative. Her class is boring and her jokes are lame!! AVOID if you don't want to kill ur gpa
The questions on exams are predictable and Debbie is approachable + funny. However, she is a very tough marker. Left the first and second midterm feeling confident, but only got a B-. But this can be majorly avoided by really reading the question CAREFULLY and knowing everything in detail. Course is interesting, but prepare to feel overwhelmed!
I cant believe she has been teaching for so many years and still doesnt understand its a first level course!!!! Chilll out on the brutal marking!!! I dont understand how she sleeps at night
Debbie is a tough marker!! If you write too much on the exams - you lose marks and if you write too less on the exams - you lose marks!! Its a lose - lose situation with her as a teacher. Avoid if you don't want to damage your gpa!! She is brutal!
she is not good
she is good. even though she is a tough marker, she wants students to do well. will give you extensions, makes lots of office hours available, will adjust weighting of midterms and such. And the tough marking is necessary since she tells you exactly what will be on the test. If she was super easy going on the marking, then everyone would get an A
makes you work for your grade so youll learn a lot from this class
Avoid if you dont want to destroy your gpa! She is a hard marker!
Debbie is a great prof. You will learn a lot from this class which will be super helpful for the Mcat. Lots of people complain about the tough marking, but she is VERY clear on what will be on the test (gives you the exact questions). The trick is to carefully read the question and to not give unnecessary information. And be good at memorizing !
Requires so much work to be submitted. All the online components, that are auto marked I got 90 - 100%, anything subjective that she marks were near failing grades. Her notes provide no information. Answers questions with more questions.
Debbie was pretty good for Bio 111 Lab. When it comes to assignments she is fairly generous with her marking, however her mid term and final exams are hard. I studied for both and couldn't crack 70%, but got 91% on lecture exam so that says something. She does explain things thoroughly and will always help you outside of class and replies to emails
She is knowledgeable and teaches well, however her marking is insanely hard, and gave lackluster feedback on midterm and exam to know where to improve. Be prepared to spend hours on lab reports as well, she has very high standards on them.
Debbie may come across as cold at first but she really just wants her students to understand the material fully. Don't expect to sit back and get a good grade. She can tell how hard you worked and what you know and will give points accordingly. Play nice with others, no nonsense in her labs.
Absolute joke. All she does is read from power points, doesn't actually teach the class. Explains concepts like you're a 4th year Bio major which makes it difficult for students fresh outta highschool. Lab - doesn't demonstrate and expects students to grasp it right away. Saw many students confused and lost most of the time
I don't think she even marks with the intention of students earning a good grade. Even with well-thought-out work and tons of peer-editing ,as well as her personal input my grade was still mediocre. Knit picks every little detail despite this being an intro to bio class. Perhaps she is better suited to year 3 & 4 students.
Debbie is extremely poor in teaching simple concepts. I would refer back to previous biology classes I've taken to understand what she was trying to teach. LOTS of work. I often had quizzes, tests, assignments and midterms due on the same day. Extremely tough grader and no feedback at all. I had to work VERY hard for an A-. Do not take her course.
Debbie is definitely a tough marker and expects a lot from her students. However, she is extremely helpful when asked and also try's her best to get students to engage during lab lectures by asking questions. I would definitely take another class with Debbie, great prof!
Debbie cares. I actually failed the final exam in the lab (personal circumstances), which should've resulted in an automatic F - Debbie paid attention and compared my grade from lab work and saw that I shouldn't have failed. She spoke to me and told me she would waive the exam because she felt as though the exam didn't reflect my work.
Very nice professor however extremely difficult in marking! I worked very very hard so far in this class and my grades are not improving. She takes off marks for small things. Would not recommend!
Great Professor, Debbie is passionate, helpful, and a great part of the biology department. On par with Jennifer Barrett, I enjoyed her lab and would take her class again in a heartbeat. Took her lecture for bio 111 and her lab in bio 112 and have no regrets!
Debbie can seem aloof, but don't let that scare you, she isn't condescending and loves the subject matter (insects!). Apart from that: Debbie is a good lecturer with good slide presentations. The jam packed lectures don't leave much room for questions, though she's good with office hours and emails. Lab time is another great way to get answers.
she is a very challenging marker and sees no problem when the class average on her midterm is ~50% in a first year course. her lectures are alright but she does not cover all the material in the textbook, so you will be left needing to read every chapter of it if you want to learn all of the information. would not recommend if you want a good grade
I would not take this professor again, she only reads off the slides, explains concepts difficulty, lecture heavy, attendance mandatory. MUST STUDY A LOT TO GET A GOOD GRADE.
She was fine.
She is clear and knowledgeable when explaining lecture concepts, lab procedures, and homework. However, she is a VERY tough grader. I am doing quite well in my lecture portion, but for some reason, I am doing worse in the lab because Debbie is picky with how things are worded. I like her as a person, though I wouldn't want her as a prof again.
Not a good professor for teaching first year classes. EXTREMELY tough grader. Nit picks about everything and anything (even if it's not mentioned by her or in the lab manual). She is an alright person overall. Be prepared to write a couple large papers and a very tough final exam.
Not a good professor to have. Most definitely should not be teaching first year courses. EXTREMELY tough grader and nit picks about everything and anything to give you that lower mark.
I would never take Debbie as a professor again. The way she marks for an introductory class if like we are in a upper-level class. Her feedback is somewhat unclear and me and many people have failed the final exam. She can be rude and acts like you should know everything. She is not the most empathetic teacher here. Stay clear!
Terrible.
Unclear instruction and doesn't know what to expect. Follows a specific criterion that we do not know. Good for chatting but not for teaching. If you have a choice don't pick her it will decrease your bio111 total grade.
Unclear instructions and tough grading and will never take again.
Took 111 lab with her last fall. The formal reports were a challenge, but I feel much more confident with scientific writing now which I was very grateful for when it came to the 112 research project and a paper I had to write for my 112 lecture. I found her instructions and expectations very clear and I enjoyed her lab.
She is very unclear on her expectations. She is very friendly, but sometimes she will leave you with poor grade and very little corrections. Sometimes she will just cross out a section of your assignment without making any comments or suggestions on what was wrong and how to improve.
*EXTREMELY tough grader* Debbie was clearly knowledgeable and more than happy to help, but her grading was seriously unreasonable at times. Huge stickler for word count and report formatting, and the final was ridiculously long and difficult— not one person in my lab finished it in time. Would not take her lab again.
Very tough grader and some i felt was unfair. She gives instructions but sometimes it isn't super clear but mostly just common sense. Labs always went smoothly
Labs were easy and fun to complete/understand. Debbie is definitely a hard marker when it comes to papers but always gives a lot of feedback so you can improve. If you need help with anything during labs she is very accessible.
Marked extremely hard and unfair, would not recommend for first years.
She was super sweet, and funny as well. Also super understanding, however she is a tough grader so be prepared for your lab reports to be really picked apart. Her explanation on what would be on the lab exam was also a bit unclear, and she could have prepared us better for it.
Amazing! Loved bio labs but reports are graded strictly.
Debbie was one of the hardest lab professors I've ever had. She marks really tough on lab reports as well as the final bio lab exam. Get ready to book a lot of office hours. Other than her grading criteria, she's a really chill proof, but your grade will tank.
