Very unclear, your questions rarely get answered and her grading system doses not make much sense at all. I would try to avoid her classes.

Her grading will blow you away. You think you did a great job and she will stick it to you. Her system is unfair and she rarely gives feedback. The writing assignments are just plain BAD ideas.
I had Ms. Abney for Eng 101 int and she was awesome I loved her class. I enjoyed getting on the computer and doing some homework for that class.

Abney is not clear at all. She does not return emails until days later. She tells you to do one thing and then grades you on something completely opposite. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
Took Abney in Spring of 2002 and I agree she grades essays kind of hard. I got mostly Bs on my essays except I got an A on the last paper. The reader response journals helped me to earn an A. Just respond and she givs full credit.
I took Abney for 103 and she was terrible. Absolutely awful Abney is what I am going to start calling her.
HORRIBLE-She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not know how to communicate her assignments to her students and then grades them harshly because of her frustration. DO NOT take her and perhaps she will lose her job!!
Assignments are very boring. She uses a program called Blackboard which sucks. Requires you to write short paragraphs and submit them onto a message board for everyone in your class to read. Not cool if you don't like sharing your stuff.

This teacher kinda blows, i worked my ass off three times as hard as i did in 098 and i passed with a C. This teacher is hard on grading, i cant tell you how much i tried avoiding this teaching after i was done. i took her the first semester she started
She is very jittery. If she tells you she doen't like your paper, stand up for yourself and argue your point. She will give you an A. I did and passed with all A's on my papers. She sucks tho

I decided to try taking ENG 103 online. Everything went fine until the very end. One final 5 page paper was due. I submitted it on time. I received no score for the paper and no further contact for the teacher. Because of this I had to file an appeal in order to drop at the last minute.
She is a VERY demanding teacher and a harsh grader on your papers. Read the other reviews about her and you'll get the idea. Avoid her!
I thought this teacher was very hard. She is very strict about how she grades her papers. I had to ask for clarification on numerous things about papers and when she answered back she would go round and round about what she was looking for.
Never have I had a professor that I didn't feel confortable talking to. She is incrediably unclear in what she wants from you. Her class is impossible. Avoid her at all costs.

Total hard-ass when it comes to attendance; you can be absent three times before she drops you a letter grade. And if you're late, like there after she takes roll, you're absent for the whole class.
She was an incredible teacher!!! Yes, she always reaked of smoke, but everytime I approached her seh was willing to listen and help when I needed it. Show that you care about the class and she goes above and beyond to make sure you do well in her class. I was shocked to read the other reviews- I've taken two of her classes and enjoyed them both!!!!

I don't know why this prof got ANY positive feedback, except perhaps that she is not tough with the grades. For an English prof, she seems to have little command or knowledge of the language. Every assignment was vague and left me wondering what she wanted. Those I asked were just as confused. I would never take her class again--too aggravating!

This teacher grades unfairly. If you try your hardest she throws it back like a slap in the face with a 0 because of a small miscommunication in what she was expecting from you, this relates to her unclear instructions for papers.
Abney is the worst English teacher I have ever had. She had no organization to the class. I enjoy writing but her topics were stupid and out of date. Her grading was random. Forget about creativity. I hope you can figure out her political leanings, because that is the only way you are going to get a good grade in that class.
She constandly comes to class ****. She tells you to correct a paper one way and then takes off points on your final paper for doing what she said. She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had!
I have straight A's and I struggled in her class. My husband helped me write my last 2 papers after getting a D. She grades on how she feels about the subject. I had my daughters English teacher read one essay and she thought it was great and I got a C. She is a TERRIBLE teacher.
I wrote a paper that I had a friend (who teaches 8th grade) read. She thought an A-/B+. I turned it in and got a D. It was on smokers leaving their butts on the ground in front of the classrooms instead of in the ash cans provided. She obviously smokes. What a way to grade. Say something she doesnt agree with and you fail the class. NICE....
i hated her! she would always comment on how our class didnt know anything and at her last job at a university her students knew this info and so should we! well at rockvally theres a varity of studnets and education levels so if she dosent like it that go back to your university!!!!!!

This was the most boring and horrible class I have taken at Rock Valley. Ms. Abney makes no attempt at making the class entertaining and she is nothing less than snappish and rude if you ask a question or answer her questions. I would not take her again.

I was amazed at how rude she is. She was very unreasonable when asked questions, and it's true that she makes no attempt at making the class interresting or even tolerable. She is extremely unclear on what she wants on papers, and is unwilling to answer questions. Once I figured out how she grades the class is pretty easy, but stay away.
WOW...I'm surprised by all the bad ratings. My questions were answered in a timely manner, and clearly. I liked this class and would take her again.

An OK teacher. She certainly isn't very clear, but upon asking, she'll tell you what she wants. She really didn't teach much in the English class at all which was dissapointing. Her Shakespeare class was better though. I wouldn't take ENG 103 with her if I could do it again. I got an A, but still not my favorite teacher.
Not the best teacher, isn't always clear about what she says. Sometimes she seems a bit rude but I don't think she means it. She grades the writing assignments a bit tough, but everything else is easy. Don't buy the handbook, you will never use it, she doesn't ever mention it. Okay teacher, but I wouldn't take her again.
I thought she was perfectly fine. You just have to pay attention; I bombed my first paper for using the wrong argumentative style. As for her being rude; she has the same tongue-in-cheek insult humor as I do. Don't be a wimp.

I'll just put it this way: she is very strict on attendance, I asked her if I could take a couple days off of class due to having surgery on my neck and she told me that I only had room for one more absence so if I missed more than the one day she would have to fail me! i was very upset with her reaction! No compassion what so ever!!
Ms. Abney was by far the WORST teacher i have EVER had. She was completely wretched. She doesn't know the material she is trying to explain AND she singled me out of the class to pick on everyday!! Now, i'm not talkin about the fun type of pickin on...she THREATENED me with the police because i was talking before class started. I dropped her class.

She expects everyone to write at post-grad level. Most of my classmates were high school students trying to get a head start on college and she was verbally abusive to them calling them stupid and too naive to be part of her class. She is mean spirited, selfish and very close-minded. RUN AND RUN FAST.
She's not exactly a bad teacher, but she does like to choose favorites. I have had little to no problems with her, but all of my friends and the rest of my class has been. Definitely would not reccommend taking her, but if you do.... Follow what she wants down to the tee and make sure that you are NEVER late. Also... try to stay on her good side.
She is completely unclear about her expectations. She will make something seem like an imformal assignment and then grade it like a term paper!! And THEN not explain why you got the grade you did, nothing but a number! DON'T TAKE HER! When you do presentations she will take it upon herself to confuse everyone and ruin your presentation.

Internet class. Stay away. She is unclear in the assignments and won't clarify. Never answers emails. Won't give you answers to your questions, not helpful at all. If you miss orientation, which is held before the last day to register, she absolutely won't let you make up the points, too bad! She talked down to me and kept telling me to quit. _itch

Terrible teacher. One of the worst I've ever had at RVC.I just retook Comp 1 this past semester and I got an A, I failed with this terrible teacher. RVC should reprimand a teacher this bad, imo.
HORRIBLE teacher. But after writing the first paper it's easy to see what she wants. She never shows up either. Every other semester she disappears for the last two weeks and you have a sub half the time and the other half you don't need to go to class. It's glorious

If you're looking for a good Dominatrix, Deb Abney is the right choice for you! Her teaching style is not to everyone's liking, but you can easily pass Her class if you obey and submit to Her! Never be afraid to ask Her for help! Always stay on Her good side (at her feet). By the end of the Her course you will be humbled to the college experience.

English isn't my favorite subject, but I must say that Abney grades pretty hard. You gotta do some deep thinking for your papers to get a good grade. She has her opinions but if you think otherwise, make sure to back up your argument really well. Like any english class, much time and dedication is needed, no matter what teacher.

This teacher is terrible! I was spared the whole semester with her because I tried to turn in a paper late and she told me I would just have to drop the class.
Unlike some of the other reviews, I found her Shakespeare class to be very good. It was straight forward, I knew what to expect and what was needed to get a good grade. I didn't have to do alot of thinking to pass. Of course this was SHAKESPEARE, so cannot vouch for her other classes. If you take her for Lit, shes alright IMO
I had a very pleasant experience in her class. We only had two tests and three papers. Due to other reviews, I was waiting all semester for a beastly and absurd teach to emerge; however this never happened. She gives you study guides for the test and they are word for word the same. She was very reasonable and helpful. Very easy for literature.
I took an online class with her and she was great. She expects excellence even in English 101. But she is one of the most helpful professors I have ever encountered. You can ask her a gazillion questions and she will never let you down. If you are having trouble go see her during her office hours. Received an A because of her dedicated help!

First half of semester devoted to short stories, other half to novels. She graded fairly and the mid-term/final were pretty easy if you read the stories! Short story reviews and a book review are minimum 5 pages long. Not too difficult. She tried to get the class engaged, but the same few people always spoke, unless group work was necessary.

I had Professor Abney for online LIT 210: pre-19th century women's literature. Abney definitely knew how to set up this course and choose interesting material for a generally uninteresting subject. Her expectations were clearly defined, and feedback was always prompt.

I really don't understand why everyone is so hard on this professor. She's really nice. If you don't ever show up and put in effort at all it might not go well, but that's kinda obvious. You only write 4 papers and have plenty of time to write them. We also had several online discussions but overall I think her class wasn't bad at all.
Her class really isn't that hard. Just participate in class discussions, complete all of her assignments, show up to class, and ask questions if something isn't clear to you. I actually really enjoyed the class.

The requirements for papers didn't follow the same criteria she used to grade the papers and the instructor didn't even know what her own criteria was when questioned. Did very little actual teaching. Most time in class was spent brainstorming or doing peer reviews. Grading criteria for papers was not defined. Do not take unless you already have a sound understanding of English.

Not really clear on instructions and if you do follow instructions, if they're not absolutely perfect or to her liking she takes so many points off and your grade will drop tremendously (it wont make sense) which makes her a horrible grader. Shes not much help at all if you are actually trying to bring your grade up, she gives little feedback.
Her essay grading is super harsh and it is impossible to get good writing grades from her. There is little to no homework but she is not interesting in class and just reads off paper if she lectures. I would suggest not taking her under any circumstances if you want to get a good grade in English.
She is not very clear on her grading criteria. Often will take points off because sentences are simply not stated the way she wants it. Gets upset when you ask too many questions and doesn't answer anything that you ask. Wouldn't recommend, find another professor.
Her communication skills are not the greatest. If you have a question referring to the writing assignment, itll take her 2-3 days before replying (on average). Its a little inconvenient, and I feel as a professor you should be there for your students to help them and I feel like she was not. I wouldnt recommend taking the course with her.
My experience with Professor Abney wasn't bad. The class is structured well. On the first day she provided a schedule that lists the activities for each class meeting. I also felt like the expectations for the papers were clear. She provided detailed writing assignment sheets and even sample papers.

Debby is a perfect example of how a professor can abuse the subjectiveness that accompanies grading english papers and give unjustified poor grades. I have received A's on every college paper I have written at ACTUAL universities but Debby of Rock Valley COMMUNITY College thinks she is a genius and all of her students must pander to her delusion.
AWFUL! I no longer have a 4.0 because of this class. I had previously received 99%-100% on papers from other English classes. That is not what I got in her class! Ridiculous. If you ask her for feedback, she will never give it to you. She will give you a D on a paper, but provide no explanation as to why you received that grade. Don't do it.
Literally the worst professor Ive ever had at RVC. Most of her assignments are about the DANGERS OF THE INTERNET. She will flat out fail you if she doesnt like your topic even if it fits all criteria. Just stopped responding to my emails entirely when I was confused why I got a 0 on an assignment I turned in on time and met all criteria. Awful

She isn't the best professor, but certainly isn't the worst. She is very bad at replying outside of class times. She doesn't accept work if you aren't there and is very rude when trying to work with her on trying to turn in assignments from being absent. Her class is easy if you do the work.
Im through November of my fall class and Prof. Abney hasnt been that bad. Ive gotten As and high Bs on all of her assignments, put in the effort & youll do fine. If you miss more than 6 classes, you fail the course. I havent completed the final paper yet but I dont think not liking a topic factors in her grading, SHE picks the topic for you
By far the rudest professor I have ever had. I once asked for help and told me no. Every assignment is weighted separately so if you do badly on one exam it will tank your grade (speaking from experience). Reads right from the handout, which made the class feel very long and boring. She didn't teach so there wasn't much to study for the exams.
