She's excellent. Students from other classes came to her lecture and said they learned a lot. If you want a cake-walk, she's not the one. If you came to learn, she's great!
I agree with the other comment. You NEED to do the homework and study, but she is just great at taking one on one time with you to help you have a better understanding of the subject. I am just hoping she's going to be teaching CHEM 104 in the fall.
she's tough, but she makes sure you understand the material
Future nursing students: take this class! Do not skip this and go directly to a one-hundred level chem class. Summers is a great teacher, but don't fall behind and see her if you need help. Also - brush up on your algebra before class, or commit yourself to extra study time.
A very articulate instructor who is committed to teaching. She had tests graded and posted on BB in a matter of hours. Advice: don't miss any tests as they can not be made up and are quite necessary for a decent grade. Recommended.
She is so helpful, and easy to understand. The concepts flow much better with her than with other chem professors, she is by far my most favorite so far!
She is a great professor
She makes things sooooo easy to understand! I want her for all of my classes!
Deborah actually helped me become more interested in chemisty. She's extremely helpful and lighthearted. If something didn't make sense in the lecture, you could stop by her office before or after (even during lab, if needed) and she would explain whatever you needed. Easy to contact and is a fair grader.
TAKE HER LABS!!! she tells you exactly what you need to know and she really cares about her students success. She makes chemistry fun and intersting. She grades pretty easy too. best teacher ive had at UAA.
Summer is a GREAT teacher. She cares about students and their learning. If I could have taken her for all of my Chemistry courses I would have, but what she taught me in 055 helped me literally sail through 103. She is great!
Fantastic instructor. My CHEM 105 lecture class ended poorly, but my lab with her was the bright spot of the semester. She is very helpful..
She is awesome!! She is very patient and enjoys teaching. She is notan easy professor, but when you complete her class you will learn a lot and have fun doing it.
104 isn't a cakewalk but Mrs. Summers makes it easier to understand. I hate chemistry but she made the class enjoyable. She will meet up with you outside of class to go over any questions you have about midterms and finals as well. Got an 88.98% so close to an A!
This has been a fantastic lab. She is honest, helpful and very good at clarifying when you are confused. She's very forgiving especially of you do the work. I would take her every semester if I could
She's a really great teacher, she makes chem fun unlike some of the other teacherswho take it so serious. She is very helpful.
Amazing prof. She makes material clear, and if you don't get it she spends extra time with you. on top of email, with in hours she responds some time minutes. she reminds me of a middle school teacher breaking things down to that level to make sure you "get" it. definitely recommend taking her class over any one else!
Awesome teacher. I am not a huge fan of chemistry but Summers made it enjoyable for me. By far the best instructor I have had at UAA.
Great Professor. She can be helpful in answering questions but still makes you think about the answer first instead of just telling you. Lab was interesting and pretty much the same throughout, quizzes could be taken multiple times before they closed too.
Awesome teacher. I took her chem lab class. She's always cheerful and willing to help but she will not tell you the answer
Best chemistry lab teacher UAA has. She is very helpful and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions. This is a teacher you should definately fight for. The final and midterm counts for 50% of the grade, but there not as hard as they seem. Each lab is pretty clear and definately not as difficult as CHEM. A103L.
Great lab teacher. Explains everything very well and is very nice. Loved going to lab every week.
She's an amazing professor. She have taught a lot of lab class, so she knows what to teach. I learned a lot from her class!
Loved her. She was very clear on her expectations and clearly cares about the success of her students. She helps you without giving you the answer. Truly wants you to succeed and understand the course. I highly recommend her!
Amazing teacher. She knows her material and taught the labs so clearly. Shes also very sweet and approachable. Do the homework, come to class prepared and you will do great! Study your labs/lab homework!
Dr. Summer was an amazing teacher. She provides a relax and professional teaching environment. Easy to talk to and never makes you feel stupid.
Awesome professor! UAA labs are never easy but she made it as doable and clear as possible. Extremely helpful and happy during office hours. Always willing to answer questions in class.
Nice teacher kind of intimidating. Way better than Murdoch! Difficult grader though.
After reading all of the positive feedback from students that have taken her class, I figured she would be perfect for Chem 105. She would never give partial credit on labs, and was very strict on grading. I found her class difficult, even though I understtod the material. I do NOT suggest taking her. I heard Bascom is the best!
Based on the comments about her I thought this lab would be a walk in the park, this was not the case. She is actually a pretty hard grader, you need to be extremely specific on hw questions, like you're explaining it to a 5yr old. If I had done that from the beginning I probably would have gotten an A the comments threw me off.
She's a very good chemistry instructor! Grades a little tough on assignments, but provides helpful feedback. One research paper, grades pretty easy. Lets you work with partners and she is always available for help if you don't understand something. Friendly, Doesn't ever make you feel stupid, and encourages questions. I highly recommend her for lab!
I took the 5-week summer session . It was difficult but I would have a harder time if I didn't take it with her. She wants you to do well and makes you actually like chemistry a bit.
Debora is simply the best instructor out there. Helpful, kind, funny, and just awesome!
SHE IS WONDERFUL!! Highly recommend. I dropped CHEM 105 cause of the horrible lecture class, but Professor Summers' was awesome! The lab assignments are confusing and poorly written at times, but she doesn't write them herself. She is there for you with whatever you need. Tough grader, but teaches you to pay attention to sig figs. TAKE LAB WHER!
She's awesome! Thankfully for me, or really anyone that need to take other chemistry science labs, she teaches more than one level of CHEM Labs! Super helpful and her work is pretty straightforward. She'll be sure to go over things with students that need more help if you don't understand something. Totally recommend her!
She really wants her students to do well. I would always be the last student left in the lab and when i did not totally understand a question she would take the time to help. Also, she is such a nice teacher that whenever time would run out she would help me put back anything that was left so I could leave in time for my next class. Best lab prof!
Mrs. Summers is an awesome teacher! She really wants you to understand the material and is always open for office hours if you have any questions and concerns. I went into her office hours every week and got help on the pre-labs. As long as you try, she is willing to help. She doesn't make you feel stupid and is able to explain material thoroughly.
Class was well organized, but do not EVER miss a due date. There is No flexibility. She expects, that as adults, her students will plan their schedules accordingly. She gives great on line lecture videos. Between the book and her lectures the class is made as easy as chem can get. Would take this course again.
Professor Summer was extraordinarily helpful and passionate about her field! She always coached me through prelabs and was prompt with grading. I succeeded in this lab so much more than last semester, just because of her!
You will have weekly quiz's that you need to study for. Do not underestimate the value of the post labs. That is where you will loose your points. Summers was so helpful though! Approach her one-one, she is clear and cant formulate tough concepts in a way that is easy to grasp. Know the main concepts of each lab. Highly recommend! Such a fun lab!
Overall good professor. She is very knowledgeable and has a passion for her students. She was always helpful and gave us a few curves on quizzes and tests.
Mrs. Summers is fun to have as a professor. She has a great sense of humor and is willing to work with students to help them understand the material better. 9/10 would take again.
Professor Summers is an amazing teacher. Her online course requires you to do quizzes and homework once a week. Watch her lectures - informational and concise! ALWAYS take advantage of tutoring on campus, it will also help you in the long-run. If you do the work, you will earn an A.
Science is one of my worst subjects but, I enjoyed her online class! She provides helpful videos for each chapter. The homework/quizzes, I had to spend quite a bit of time on each week but, her grading is beyond fair. She promptly responded to each e-mail I sent and was very friendly! If I had to take another science class, it would be with Summers
Summer is a incredible Chemistry Teacher. I took her online class for chem 103 because I failed the first one. So it was a refresher course. I got a B in her class. She is willing to help you if you have any question. Her quizzes are on BB (blackboard), and exams are either online or at GHM. Our class was the first one to take the PRNow exam. Love
There is quite a bit of online homework and weekly lecture video's usually take about 2 hours to watch and annotate. Reading is hefty as well as the homework. Do the reading, homework, quizzes, MOST IMPORTANTLY understand the CONCEPTS and you will pass with an A! Exams are proctored, but mostly follow the quiz and/or homework Q's and CONCEPTS.
A really heavy class, something that CHEM 055 should not be. The tests were really hard and the class was doing really bad. I took it online and it was a LOT of work every week!!
Summers is one of the kindest teachers I've ever had. However, she's also one of the toughest. She definitely does not hand out A's. There is a quiz before every lab. Don't underestimate pre-labs, post labs, and reports. She is a tough grader on those, and they will make or break your final grade.
I have never had a worst teacher like, if you have technical problem she will blame you. I was doing my final using PRnow and the moment I open the exam, my computer froze and I had to call technical support to fix it and they gave me ticket number to give her but she won't let me do it because she was leaving town. She used it as my lowest grade.
I took Sommers online and I had to withdraw from the class from not understanding anything she was saying. The tests are proctored through RPNow, and you are not allowed to have a cheat sheet. I am taking this class again on campus w/a different prof., & I'm allowed a front/back cheat sheet which makes life so much easier!
Its chemistry, but not too bad. Lots of homework, but you get to learn the chem. The tests are not too bad. Just make sure to do the practice tests and you will be fine if you understand those. Great course, best chem prof at UAA for sure.
i took this class online and it was ridiculously hard for chem a055. tests were kinda hard and the class was doing bad on them, judging from the test averages she would email. be prepared to do tons of homework every week (as expected). her lecture videos were kind of annoying because i feel she didn't explain things thoroughly enough sometimes.
I took chem 3 years ago in high school and skipped Chem055 and thought this was an easy chem class. The material is basically self-taught, but Summers provides the tools necessary to succeed. I say this is an easy class because I put A LOT of time into it. If you stay up with the HW and quizzes and understand most of the material you will do fine.
I had her for chem lab and she is very knowledgeable. She is very straightforward and does not tolerate any inappropriate behavior. I would take her again.
Really sweet lady who obviously cares about her students. Clearly outlines what she expects from you, and she has recorded safety videos that she has you watch before each wet lab. She's more than happy to answer questions and help you, but you have to ask. I'd absolutely take a class with her again!!
I took the class with her online and I liked it a lot. All of the problems I had with the class were mostly with Pearson (like the amount and way homework was graded).I didn't watch a lot of her lectures because a lot of stuff I remembered from High School but the ones I did watch were very understandable and she has a voice that sounds interested.
I am sad that Professor Summers does not teach any of the more advanced chem classes as I'd like to have her for future subjects! The course is both homework and reading heavy, but if you can stay ahead or on-track, it really isn't that bad. My typical week is anywhere from 5-15 hours depending on the unit.
Summers is a very nice lady that genuinely cares about her students. She is very willing to go over something until you fully understand if you have any questions. You absolutely must do the homework though to understand lecture and to do well on the tests.
Summers is a very nice person. She is accessible at office hours and cares about students. The course was definitely hard, but not impossible as long as you put in good effort. She also gave us an extra credit opportunity that added 2% to our cumulative grades. She also curves tests when necessary and drops your lowest grade, excluding the final.
I went to her office hours, and she asked me why I didn't know the material, that I was asking her to help me with. She will not help during office hours. She does not respect her students, other colleagues of mine do not like her either.
Chem103 lecture online. Your grade is off the average of ALEKS homework and 3 tests(one is dropped), and the final. All tests are about 25 questions each worth 4.5 points. Final is about 40 questions. ALEKS homework is crap. The worst way to do homework, you have so many tasks to do. quizzes will then give you more tasks if you get them wrong.
I do not recommend this professor. I am currently in the chem intro class and we have not done any chemistry yet, just essays and videos. I am not learning anything. She also grades very harshly. Take another chem professor!
Do not take this Professor if you can avoid it. One of the worst professors Ive ever had. Gives way too heavy workload for such a beginner class. And grades tough. Would not recommend
So far I have an A in this class, but that's because I worked very hard to earn it. She is a tough grader. No matter how hard you work, even a simple mistake is a huge mistake in her eyes. For example, a min late submission is automatically a zero. Please do yourself a favor and find a professor that wants to see you succeed.
She is the best professor I've ever had. I didn't spend an overwhelming amount of time studying and I got 100% on every test. Her tests are easy and very straight forward. I would take her class again in a heartbeat.
My first impression on this class was, "WOW, this is a lot to do for the first week". I am no slacker by any means, and when 10-15 hrs are asked of me to set aside for a BASIC chem 055 class, I knew I wouldn't last NOR pass. Take this class if you are prepared for a ton of work or this is in your degree field. Do not take if it is required.
Expect to read a lot, watch lectures, take notes, and spend several hours a week on the material. I did not like using ALEKS. For my learning style, I didnt find the readings connected with the homework enough to depend only on the material given to do the homework and study for the tests.
Participation matters! The grade is an accumulation of your 4 exams+the final+aleks hw average+participation. Very involved, accessible outside of class even in late hours. Nice, a little passive-aggressive. Practice tests to puts a lot of stuff on the blackboard that misleads to your final grade, tutoring options available. Pre recorded lectures
This class has taught me so well in organizing and develop my critical thinking. The professor is really loving and will always help you if you let her to. Overall, all the work are independent, so you have to do all the task by yourself and dont EVER hesitate to email or do a zoom with her for help. Debora is the best.
Professor Summers is a great chem teacher. She knows the content very well and her videos are a great resource. She provides various ways of learning the content (practice exams, online homework, etc.) without making the class feel too burdensome. The practice exams give a good idea of what is on each exam, so there's no surprises.
Shes probably a nice woman, but her job is to teach chemistry. She does not like teaching, evidenced by her super passive aggressive and condescending attitude. Transfer schools or switch majors if you have to.
Overall I did like professor Summers. Initially I was quite overwhelmed. The material in this class was pretty heavy & participation definitely matters. I spent at least 10 hours a week on this class, which was surprising to me for an introductory class. I will say tests weren't worth to much which benefited me as I am a poor test taker.
Trust the reviews, ALEKS is HORRIBLE. Dropped her class because of it. Couldn't stand it. No comment on how she is as a professor, but know that this is a really difficult class if you plan to redo problems and learn. If you struggle it will not allow you to continue and your grade is dependent on completion. RPNow and 5 exams!
Hard grader. I completed an assignment, scanned it, turned it in, as it was two pictures, I sent in two pictures. 0/50 because of wrong format. I re-summited it and emailed and beggggggged even for a 25/50 and she doesn't care. Won't except anything late or in wrong format. HARD grader. zero wiggle room. LOTS of hw for a beginning class. H8 HER.
Her lectures were clear and precise, though sometimes long. Gave you almost everything you need to know for the exams.
Two assignments per chapter that can take 2+ hrs each. She expects you to listen to her lectures, complete practice problems for no credit, and do it all within a short timespan of 3 days to a week. Somehow managed to make exams even more stressful with scores dependent on integrity reports. Can be condescending. Keep up and you'll do fine.
Took Intro to Chem/Organic Chem with Dr. Summers. Got "A's" in both. She's honestly really good at teaching and explains the material in a way that makes it easier to understand. But, it's a lot of work. Expect to do ATLEAST an hour of those Pearson practice quizzes per week. If you're having a hard time just email her she's really understanding.
Took this as part of a new degree plan, dropped before deadline. There's an unusual amount of "busywork", most of which isn't chem related. Curriculum seems to be more "study skills" less chem, pedantic. Not recommended if you have other classes/support a family/work a full time job. Time/tuition better spent elsewhere. Taking with diff. prof.
This class is all busy work. Professor treats you like you are lesser and accepts absolutely nothing late, even when it is the colleges fault that you missed an assignment. Submitted test corrections and missed points due to showing my work not being an explanation. Professor is rude in her feedback. Do not recommend if you have work or a family.
She seems like she may be a good teacher in person but online it was decent. Some things were vague or not covered that was on the homework. I really like that she had practice exams that were similar to the actual exams. Tutors for the class usually couldn't figure out homework. She didn't give feedback or show you what you missed on exams.
VERY HARD GRADER! She makes you write a weekly schedule and wants you to comment on if you followed it or not. Does not account for life, being a parent or a FT job. prepare to spend 10+ hours a week on basically busy work without actual chemistry. This is a pass/fail class and I already dropped her class for a different prof. do not recommend her.
This professor is very hard and not understanding she gives zero empathy for students and does not care what your grade will be. She doesn't organize the work in a way that you to be successful therefore interacting with her is not a pleasant experience
Do not take this class. It sets you up to fail and you will not learn anything. My whole study group is teaching itself. Her lecture videos never line up with the homework and she is unkind when responding to emails. Test are also so hard that no one passes them, no matter how confident you feel, even AFTER the test, somehow you will still fail
Find ANY other professor. She is extremely rigid when it comes to grading and has zero sympathy for students. Her lectures rarely correspond with tests and she makes them unbearable. Also, plan on not being able to enjoy a holiday week (not including break) we had a test over Memorial Day week. Just find another teacher. She is a stick in the mud
Do NOT take this professor. No sympathy, outdated lectures, and uses Pearson platform. She blocked you from seeing how well you did on tests (therefore you could not improve). If you wanted to see you could email her and even then she didn't show you and was passive aggressively rude in emails about your performance.
If you can, take this class with ANY other professor. There were 3 exams, 1 of them was a cumulative final. You weren't able to see your answers from the exams, but she did provide a review although it was not helpful. Be prepared for quizzes every week with topics not covered on the homework. If you ever need help in this class youtube Roxi Hulet.
Lectures were long and virtually useless when in came to the homework, which was assigned via the ALEKS platform. I had to teach myself everything (with the help of Roxi Hulet on YouTube) and the exam questions had a habit of making absolutely no sense, especially compared to the homework. I would take literally anyone else.
Take a deep breath before you decide to take her class. Her assignments are all ALEKS based with little to no time to read the textbook. She is nice in her emails though so theres a plus. She has 3 exams that are each 3 hours long with the second exam and final only being a week apart. But seriously, if you can choose another professor, please do.
Unreceptive to constructive feedback, arrogant, and out of touch. I have never felt more disrespected by an instructor. Relatively, the course content is not difficult if you take ownership of your learning, seek other resources (Roxi Hulet), and teach yourself. Expect a purely transactional relationship - she doesn't care about students.
Extremely difficult class. Very tough grader with nonstop homework, quizzes and tests. The material is hard to follow and the lectures are just her reading the PowerPoint. Anytime I asked for help all I got was “read the book” Tanked my GPA, wasted an entire semester and ended up retaking through Kenai. Unless you are a chem wiz alone, you'll fail
She only reads off the book provided powerpoint. I asked her for help and she told me to review the entire chapter. About half my class failed. I was online and had the ALEKS system. The quiz results are only viewable until after the due date and only once. Take pictures as you go on your first attempt and figure it out on your own. DIY course
Summers was honestly the worst teacher I had. She wouldn't offer the lab portion online but also wouldn't let our group fly out for it "it wasn't fair to the other students". The class was fully asynchronous, she rarely responded to emails, and the material wasn't clear. Basically me and the other dual enrollment kids had to do it ourselves. 0/10
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take any class with her as the professor!
WORSE professor I've had. Did a whole assignment and forgot to turn it in PDF as I was in a rush and she gave me a 0 all b/c of the way I turned it in but you can see I did the assignment. Should not be a professor as she doesn't care for students, if you email her questions she may just tell you to drop out instead of helping students understand.
I found professor summers to be one of the best in the chem department. She made all her expectations known off the bat. yes, there is a lot of work but in my opinion its pretty straight forward. She has been more than accommodating and is really fast replying to emails. If you go to office hours she does a good job at helping learn hard concepts.
this course wasnt bad, having the fact of not being able to look at quizzes and exams did make it hard to study, i was never sure what exactly needed to be worked on from the tests but this coures was formatted well and easy to find for all the resources and information as well as the classwork itself.
This class relies heavily on lecture videos and textbook work. Assignments are due right after lectures with no late work accepted. Weekly quizzes have varying deadlines and no retakes. There are 3 major exams. Limited extra credit after the midterm and final. If chemistry isn't your strength I'd consider in-person class or getting a tutor.
Very challenging class. Dr. Summers is strict on deadlines (not heartless tho if you can prove a situation). Only get grades on homework, chapter quizzes, and exams. Lectures are very helpful, and very directly/closely follow content on exams. Expectations are clear.Challenging class but I did better than I did in chem 103 thanks to Dr. Summers
I took CHEM A105 last term with a prof whose curriculum I wish had been like Ms. Summers'. Her class is homework-heavy, but the platform she uses (ALEKS) allows multiple practice attempts. Her practice tests & exams are similar to what's on the homework. Chem is a tough class no matter which prof you take it with, but she makes it feel manageable
super strict. students average 68-70% on exams. dont take unless there is no one else. no rounding even if less than 1%.
Watches how long u spend on blackboard. Will use against u if she has to. hw every week. u have to do well on it. If u miss a quiz or don't complete module u cannot move on to the nxt module. Teaching style is very rigid and robotic. This is the type of chem instructor that roots for u to fail, and fails to inspire. Passive aggressive in emails.
