Great professor, really good about responding to emails. Fun and interesting topics. Expects research for discussion posts but only one reference and she provides many items you can use for this requirement. Over all very interesting and fun.
Very organize class. Instructor very helpful and willing to help. Easy class if you do the work on or before due dates, you will pass with no problem. No exam, only quizzes.
Excellent teacher, always tried to help me and work with my schedule. Very nice and cares about her students. Would take a class that she teaches again
Easy online class with some cumbersome assignments, none of which are difficult just a bit time consuming. Other than that, the class was straight forward and I learned a descent amount of relevant information.
Dr. Barr was an amazing instructor. I took her class this spring, she does not give a final exam and she pushes for extra credit (even if you feel like you don't need it)and tries very hard to make sure you pass. The class is very easy, I got a final grade of a B! I highly recommend her 100% she's funny and her lectures very interesting.
She's very nice and cares a lot. You don't stress in the class very easy A grade if you fail that means you tried hard to fail
Love, love, love Dr. Barr. I've never laughed harder and enjoyed a class more than this one. Keep up with the quizzes and you'll do great. Whether this class applies to your major or you just need an elective credit, the information will stick and you'll actually enjoy the learning experience.
Took her my first semester at HCC and got an A. She doesn't believe in test but does give a mid-term and a final. All you have to do is write an essay for both which was super easy. She does have a few HW assignments but nothing hard and 1 in class group debate, but she helps you through it. Overall great professor and would take again.
Professor Barr is an amazing professor. I took her for sociology, last spring I highly recommend her, easy A. I would definitely take her again.
She was fairly easy, very clear in what she expected of you. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to this course though. I took the online marriage and family course and we had something due every 3 days. Overall, it wasn't hard, just time consuming. Great professor, very helpful and available for anything you need.
Incredibly helpful if you ask for help! There is a online quiz each week, but they are fairly easy with your book. She does drop your lowest 4 quizzes, and there are no exams. I missed 4 classes, and still left the class with a high A. There is 1 paper, but she breaks it up into sections and gives feedback. There is group work, but it is easy.
Pretty good class,. Topics are interesting overall. Not hard to get an A
Great Professor. She is clear on what she expects and is really easy, she is also nice and very funny too! Loved having her as a professor and shes one of the few ill remember at HCC
I LUVVVVVVV HERRR VERY MUCH, she's an awesome professor know's what she's teaching and i luv that also alot of EXTRA CREDIT, easy to talk too, funny, and take it from me you will ENJOY her class. the only thing i hate is when she show us a movie and she give us the questions so we can write about. but every thing she's wonderful. TAKE HER!!!!!!!!
One of the best online teachers I have ever had. I have never in my time in college had a professor as thorough or organized as her. It made the work load much easier to handle. We had to do a paper/project about a family and i wrote over a 10 page paper and didn't notice it because of how she has each part sectioned. It was an overall great class.
Dr Barr is ALOT of fun. She tries to make the class as interesting and as fun as possible. She gives a good amount of extra credit and all of her quizzes are open book, with the four lowest grades dropped. She also takes attendance but will use the extra credit points to go towards classes missed if you need it.
I find it pretty easy work just very time consuming since I am taking an expedited course. I feel she is highly unprofessional. I sent her a personal email and instead of her responding directly to me she responded by sending out a direct message announcement to all students. Unprofessional especially coming from a doctor.
I took this course over the summer online. It was a 6 week course and there were a lot of assignments. I think it was too much work given for such short time. You have to work hard to get a good grade. Her grading was kind of tough. I wouldn't take her during the summer again if I had too take her. We read the entire book except Ch 15.
Ms Barr is a wonderful professor. She's a little crazy but she is halarious and we had a lot of fun in her class. She makes this class easy. I recommend taking her for sociology! You will fly by her class with an A.
I took this class as my last elective finishing my AA, I can honestly say it is the first class I have had at HCC that has SO MUCH WORK. Out of all classes, maths, and sciences, this class trumps them all on the workload. She is also not a lenient grader nor organized. You have to go through 5 different links to get to one assignment. Too much.
The class itself shouldn't be difficult sociology can be an easy and enjoyable class since its relatable BUTTTTTTTT she is soooooooo boring, all her examples and ''credible information' is from the the 90s and early 2000s. she doesn't update content, gives ALOT OF WORK and is not an easy grader!!!!
This class requires a lot of reading and writing. Must buy the book, she nags if you don't. Cant skip class she takes 10 points off for every absence off final grade. She's also rude cuts students off while they are talking. I had more work in this class than my physics and business calc class put together & she is really tough grader.
Took her online course for sociology and it was awesome! A lot of coursework, but that's because I took the condensed version in 6 weeks so that was obviously expected as with any other online 6 week course. She answers emails very swiftly and thoroughly, and gives good feedback on how to improve responses. She also has an awesome personality! :)
Absolutely loved this professor. At first I was intimated because it was my first online class, but Mrs. Barr made it so fun and easy. We had a discussion post due almost every week and about four section exams which were very easy and directly out of the book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND
the grading criteria was very clear. This professor was beyond awesome she replied to all emails, gave plenty of extra credit. If you d not get an A or B its because your missed assignments.
I took this class during the fall of 2017 and because of Irma things were a bit nuts but she was so concerned about making sure everyone stayed caught up and changed things around to accomade the new schedule. She is passionate about sociology and makes a subject with I struggled with before so much fun. I highly recommend her to everyone.
One of the best teachers I've had. Although online classes can be difficult, she made Intro to Sociology a smooth process. I learned so much because of her teaching style. It was never boring and i never felt pressure or scared not to pass. She wants to see her students succeed for sure.
This was one of my first online classes at HCC and I'm glad I chose Dr. Barr. She is absolutely amazing and truly cares about her students. The online class was so interactive and had enough assignments that you wouldn't forget about the class. She offers a TON of extra credit and has clear expectations for your work. I HIGHLY recommend her. Easy A.
She is very specific in the beginning that we are going to have to do two papers for the schools code to pass .. if you do good in one and bad in the other you still have a chance to pass . Make sure you do all the quizes and homework . If you miss clsss you lose participation credit . She gives a lot of extra credit .
I really loved Dr. Barr. She is an excellent professor that gives you a lot of opportunities to get good grades. You have to be constant with her homework, but you can do everything. I really enjoyed the class and it was so funny. The topics were so interesting and the class was fantastic. It was my favorite subject, and I hope to take her again.
I have had Dr Barr for 3 classes; Intro to Sociology, Human Sexuality and Social Problems. Truthfully, she has made me consider a degree in sociology. She is an amazing teacher. I've had her twice online and once in person. In person was more fun. The workload was super easy and light. I kept taking the classes as electives because they were simple
This online course was the hardest course I have ever taken. The amount of work and the disorganization of how to complete textbook assignments was too much. I would have been much better off taking any other class in person because I only took this course as an elective. I invested so much of my time into this course, I do not enjoy it at all.
Professor Barr is really hands on in the course, it's clear she loves the subject. Every week there's a new discussion post original and 2 responses. Then the following day there's a quiz. You have opinion essay for one final paper. Overall I got an A. Just do the work and you're good!
She was very disorganized & the online class was difficult to navigate. For an intro course, the workload is obnoxiously heavy & time consuming. Links were never up-to-date & have fun clicking through multiple pages to view an assignment or required read. Be prepared to address her as DR. Barr, she makes an effort to address it.
LOVE! SHE IS AWESOME! she makes everything so easy and the course itself is pretty easy. She makes discussions every week and respond to others, and gives A LOTOF EC! Her discussions are great and if you don't feel comfortable you can choose to opt. She has a lot of folders and links, but once you realize how to navigate it its and easy and fun A!!
One of my favorite teachers! she makes you dig deeper into everyday things and will change your mind on it. She is very easy and enjoys what she is doing!
I love professor Barr she gives very informative information to help all her student succeed in the class. she gives plenty extra credit throughout the semester. lots of reading but the class is very fun. I took this class online and found it pretty easy. JUST DO THE WORK AND YOU'LL DO GREAT!
Dr. Barr will respond to emails fairly quickly, just make sure you CANNOT find the answer on the Syllabus first. There is a discussion post each week, most will only require two responses, some require more (usually the more interactive assignments). Discussion posts are guided by prompting questions, and if something seems confusing - just ask!
Professor Barr is the sweetest and most fun professor I have ever met. She makes everything fun, doesnt have tests, and is pretty lenient on grades. I would love to take her again and gives so much extra credit its insane. Dr. Barr is so funny as well and if youre failing you have issues
Do the work and submit it on time and you should pass. She takes a little while to grade items and doesn't provide enough feedback. no paper textbook needed: read e-text and complete quizzes on pearson revel every week. Discussion posts with responses every week Several extra credit opportunities available Two Movie project assignments
I did this class online and there wasn't too much work. If ever I had a question, Dr. Barr always answered emails and was very easy to talk to. This was a class which definitely pertained to my life, and I learned a lot about how to deal with my own family. Dr. Barr is a winner!
Professor was not professional when giving "constructive" advice, and used text message language when commenting on my assignment. She was not able to help me learn my mistakes, but was ok with assignments.
One of the best professors I've experienced, as long as you do the work you can get an A. She was very good at responding and there were many extra credit opportunities. I took a 6-week sociology course
Professor Barr was very clear on her expectations from the beginning of the class. This course id not difficult but you should expect to do a lot of reading and participating in at least 2 discussion posts a week. There are 4 Gordon rule discussion post if you don't pass, may cause you to fail the class. However she provided extra credit to help.
Every assignment required 6+ tabs open at a time. Sorting through links to find required material took longer than the actual coursework. This class is very disorganized and NOT a good fit for anyone who is taking online classes for the sake of flexibility. Deadlines are tight and some assignments open & close within 24 hours.
I have taken Professor Barr a few time and I have loved her in the past but this year her class is so boring and repetitive. Her quizzes are from the book, but when taking her quizzes she puts wrong answers as the right ones which mess up your grade.
Worst professor by far
Dr Barr was well prepared for class lectures with a large amount of knowledge in this subject! She was super clear as far as class expectations and made both the mid term and final exam fun to take. I decided my major from attending her class. She offered tons of advice as to how to go about career choices unpo my completion of school.
Deborah Barr is honestly the funniest professor Ive ever had!! She is so caring about her students and she accommodates when something serious comes up. Her lectures make you seriously think about life and they are super interesting. Shes super nice and is super passionate about teaching. Barely any homework too!
Professor Barr was a phenomenal professor! Her class was engaging and the material was relevant. All her grading criteria are straightforward but if have any questions you can always ask for clarification. There's quite a bit of writing and reading but that's to be expected. Overall, I would take her class again!
Deborah Barr is one of the absolute best teachers at HCC; anyone who states differently either did not apply themselves during the course or has a personal vendetta. She is a teacher who actually structures her course to ensure you learn sociological concepts while also seeing how to apply them in real life. She offers tons of extra credit as well.
4.0 GPA student here, and I must say that electing to take this class was huge relief. While Dr. Barr does require you to put forth effort (shocking, I know, its college folks) she makes learning and engaging in class activities fun! I hope to take another one of her classes soon! Btw, lots of opportunities for extra credit!
Dr Barr teaches from a social perspective, using class participation and group projects. Sociology is about interaction, which is incorporated into the class. I think her teaching style fits the subject. I learned a lot and am developing a better perspective on society.
Dr. Barr was awesome, she always answered my emails, and boy did I send her a lot of emails. This is another class where there is going to be work. Discussions, quizes, and projects. Use your time management skills, and do the work there is no way you won't get an A. Dr. Barr is very responsive and if you need help you can't be afraid to email her!
Took her for an online class. Easily accessible & clear with what she needs to done. Great feedback on work & communicates. Lots of work but as long as you do all the assignments you pass fine.
Professor Barr has been amazing this semester! The online course is easily navigatable and each week is structured the same. The majority of the grades are discussions, and you only have to take 10 of the quizes which are a part of the textbook system. The midterm and final are a series of short papers that apply sociology to popular movies/docu.
A lot of reading, I recommend you to have a full understanding sociological theories from the beginning they will come up each chapter. Some of the chapters I did skim them to have enough information to complete my discussion post. There are quizzes very easy not timed. Midterm/final are movie based on the theories. Very easy ask will respond fast.
I took Professor Barr for Sociology online. She is a great Professor! The discussion topics were amazing in this class, and she makes learning sociology fun. There is a good amount of workload that is required for this class, but as long as you participate in the weekly discussions and follow directions with works cited you will be fine.
Overall good classes, social problems and marriage and family, only problem were projects or papers. She didn't seem to read the entire paper and I just got a paper back saying I have typos when there weren't any and yes I double checked before handing it in and used the editor in word. If you take her classes keep it short and sweet.
Dr. Barr was a great Professor. Get ready to read. The readings are interesting an informative. If your doing the documentaries which was my favorite, she sheds some light into some questionable areas. Some things to consider when taking this class. Manage your time, Be involved, Hand in assignments on time, Ask questions when unsure.
The class is pretty easy I received an C+ because I didnt turn all my work in on time I was late with most assignments if I would have done it on time I would have received an A+ but the class over all is easy.
I took Professor Barrs class over the summer semester and it was my favorite out of all 4 of the classes I had taken. Always super quick to respond day or night and was also willing to video chat over zoom! There is absolutely no way to fail this class unless you really don't try as she offers plenty of extra credit opportunities! 100% do it again!
Dr. Barr was by far the best professor I have ever had (and I've attended a top school so I know good professors). She clearly cares about her students, which is demonstrated through her challenging but interesting curriculum. The class itself is easy as long as you're up to date on current issues and/or keep up with the reading.
By far my favorite professor. She really cares about her students. She explains everything so thoroughly, responds to emails quickly, has a very fair grading scale, and offers lots of extra credit opportunities. Shes super understanding and encouraging. Fun class to take and she made it a great experience! Def recommend. Took it online by the way.
I have loved Professor Barr's class this semester. Be warned, she does make you work for your grades. Discussion boards will start off easy but get longer and harder throughout the semester. Quizzes are textbook and quite easy. She is very caring and even emailed me about my major wanting to help me find a good college for my degree in the future!
One of the best professors I've had. She is very kind and reaches out if need be for help on assignments. Assignments are very straightforward and she provides tons of resources for work so it's not hard to pass at all. Super good teacher!
Gave a decent amount of work. She has a lot of engaging and interesting assignments and the discussions are fun. She makes the class interesting. Gives rubrics so you can see exactly what she is looking for.
Dr. Barr will make you work for your grade, but the assignments were always different every week and the content of the discussions were interesting and fun to write about. Didn't feel repetitive like most online classes tend to feel.
Weekly quizzes and discussions. easy.
Average professor, but easy A. Takes too long to grade assignments and was behind in grading the whole semester. Assignments are extremely dumbed down & easy, just make sure you follow the rubric.
Dr. Barr is great! There's a lot of assignments each week but they really get you thinking. The midterm and final were both papers about sociological concepts in films. Dr. Barr gives great feedback and clarifies concepts after discussions. I'm grateful for taking this class because it inspired me to minor in Sociology! Definitely recommend!
This class had a normal amount of work and the professor kept it interesting as online classes can be boring at times. Though she graded honestly, she gave great feed back and offered extra credit in multiple ways.
Long assignments not to hard for some but is a easy class
Relies on video clips to teach. Unorganized and grades very late and harsh. She took about a month and a half to grade an important project, graded it wrong said she would fix it and took another month. I would not recommend to anyone. If you do decide to take it dont buy the book. I didnt open it once. All the quizzes are on quizlet.
Deborah Barr really puts in a lot of work to make sure you learn. She is always accessible if you need help and very kind!
This class was so fun! There were debates about difficult issues, thought provoking conversations, and incredibly interesting assignments. I would take this class ten more times just to explore other people's perspectives. She's a great teacher and gives students all the opportunity in the world to pass and excel! Easy A. Even easier to pass.
Dr. Barr is one of the best teachers I have met. While the work is based on the work and youll do a good amount of writing, her enthusiasm and love for the topics and her students makes it all worth it. Ive taken Barrs classes on multiple occasions and she keeps getting better. Light hearted, funny, and motivates you to learn!
Honestly do not take this class unless you like to waste your time and money.
Good teacher and nice and easy to reach, but will take off points on every assignment for any reason she can find; she doesn't give perfect scores on anything. The whole class is quizzes and discussions every week so it's pretty easy and she gives assignments for extra credit. Don't miss a discussion, you won't get an A.
Very easy class with easy discussion post and hard tests.
Her course load is absurd and if you don't like reading, writing, or are slow in any way don't take this class. I regret it she's so hard! And absolutely no excuses.
The discussions are very impactful on the grade which sucks when some people post late. She is very reachable. There are tons of extra credit assignments at the end. The new bookless curriculum is terrible as you can't find information easily and it will bury your browser in open tabs, but that's not really the professor's fault.
Very pleased to take this class. It was a hybrid class, so I was able to take this online or in-person. There are a few group projects throughout this course so if you're not too fond of those you might want to pass on this one. Otherwise, an extremely helpful and kind professor who wants the best for her students. Definitely recommend!
She takes SO LONG to grade. Assigns three assignments for each week and takes about three weeks to actually grade them. Why am I reading a 12 paragraph essay explaining the assignment? it's annoying. I simply scanned through the paragraphs to know what to do because the rest was common sense that she felt the need to define each word of.
Mrs. Barr is understanding and patient. I had suffered from mental illness early into my semester and slacked a lot. The extra credit saved me. She gives feedback and always responds to messages fast. She also provides free resources. Her grading is forgiving and as long as you work you pass.I was able to pass easily working full time.
Dr.Barr literally guidelines exactly what needs to be included for you to receive an A. Lots of extra credit opportunity and your three lowest quiz grades get dropped. The work load can be a lot at times but her rubrics are clear and will guide you to success. This course didn't have a physical text book and offered all the information online.
Dr. Barr is one of the most amazing professors Ive ever had. I reached out 2yrs after taking her class to see if she could help with a recommendation, and she went above and beyond. I got my scholarship, and to reconnect with a compassionate teacher. Dont hesitate to reach out to her! Her classes are interesting, compelling, & worth every second.
This course was offered simulcast which is very convenient for someone who cannot attend in person due to personal life or unexpected circumstances. You have the option of either attending online or in person. There are two group activities throughout the course; the religion activity and euthanasia debate were interesting and easy to follow.
Con: I do feel personal views often overshadowed facts. This is a HIGHLY controversial and oddly vague course. Deep topics are discussed but w no true objective at end. No closure. However, pro: EASY COURSE. Flex classes so you can go online AND in class. Your choice! Professor gets back w you and COMMUNICATES QUICKLY! Fun assignments and debates.
Easy class especially if you just do the work. Good teacher who cares, and all can be done online.
Take a class with Professor Barr and you will not regret it!! She was my favorite professor I have had so far in my college experience and highly recommend taking her class. I took Sociology and not only was the content very interesting and relevant, but it was taught in a manner that got the class thinking independently and made a lasting impact.
BEWARE OF 2 GROUP PROJECTS!! This teacher seems good from reviews, however I barely learned anything during this class. It was very argumentative the whole semester, she didn't let us put our own opinions into discussions some days. Every assignment she is expecting perfection, even when you are putting in effort you still won't get a 100.
She gives easy extra credit at the semester's end, which can help. Also, extra credit is given throughout the course. Just don't fall behind and read through the assignments carefully and you'll be fine.
Lots of extra credit opportunities. Just don't fall behind and read through assignments carefully and you'll be fine :)
I think she doesn't know how her course is structured. Her assignments are very confusing. On her rubric she's asking for 1000 words minimum and in class she said too many words on assignments is suspicious chatgpt LOL. The extra credit is an insane essay paper. Try to opt for others sociology professors that HCC has.
Expect to write a lot and have work like you don't have other classes and a life outside of school. Takes WEEKS to post grades, but will penalize you for having day late work lol. Her class isn't fun at all I cant remember one good lecture. The final essay is nuts if you're a fulltime student. I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy!
For starters this class was fun. She is 100% Fair across the board a true definition of a teacher. ASSIGNMENTS AND TEST ARE VERY EASY. You must read all the material that are handed to you. Lectures are recorded so You should be prepared for class Every thing you need is right in front of you.GREAT TEACHER DOORS ARE ALWAYS OPEN. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
Too much unnecessary work. Quizzes every week but there are like 500 writing assignments which she grades like English class. The lecture was too long and boring the good things are that there was no additional cost, and the optional team calls counted as participation if you could come to class.
Deborah's class has lots of extra credit opportunities. Use unstuckstudy and focus on the assignments - they may seem demanding, but engaging with the material pays off. Overall, a manageable course if you stay on top of things.
Each assignment has at least a pages worth of criteria you need to meet for every assignment except the weekly quizzes which are riddled with old questions that have answers that are no longer included in the textbook. Some assignments open and lock within 2 days (debates). If you do not have the same perspective as her you will be critiqued on it.
Dr.B's class was a simulcast type of class, which means you could attend her class online and in person. She is very kind, very understanding and also easy going. She is an awesome teacher, if you are struggling or dealing with something please go to her office hours, she wants you to succeed, so please go to her office hours and listen to feedback

Amazing professor to have for sociology. Grading scale is clear and precise. Plenty of time for assignments and drops the lowest scores. She is accessible outside of class and more than willing to go the extra mile to help you succeed. No tests, only assignments and they were fun. Gordon Rule assignment was tough, but she walks you through it.
