Great instructor! She was very accomodating and gives you every chance to succeed. She isn't easy, though. You must work hard to do well in her class. Overall, a great instructor.
Dr. Damcott is the best teacher I’ve had since going to school. She will always make the time to work with you. She grades on five different categories: homework 15% some of the exam questions are based off of this, labs 15% usually doesn’t take long to do and the write-ups are not very hard, lab
Continued from below... lab quizzes 5% and if you read the lab you are good, exams 45% steep but if you keep up with the homework you should be okay, and the final 20% hard because it covers everything.

She gives plenty of extra credit opportunities, her tests are not difficult at all if you go to class, does give homework but if you do a good job on it you'll do fine in the class, not a total breeze you still need to study and do your homework
super fun but will hate you if u are a big show off and dont follow the class rythm

This class is by far not an easy class, many people dropped or didn't pass. If you do your homework, come to class, study for tests & quizzes, and live, breath, eat physics problems for 4 months, you can do very well in her class. She mellowed out more towards the end of the semester after she got to know all of the personalities of her students.
Make sure you show her that you are puttin in 101%, and she will make sure you do well :0) This is certinaly not an easy class, but just keep up with the work! Make sure to attend all the lectures because she explains thins very well.
This is the only class that I actually look forward to going to now. Dr. Damcott is a very good teacher. She takes complex material and makes it practical, applicable, understandable, and interesting. I highly recommend her for any physics class. You will have to work, but you will learn a lot and can earn a good grade if you work hard.
Physics is not a subject that I was extremely interested in, but Dr. Damcott made class a lot of fun and the subject matter fun to learn. There is a lot of work that needs to be done in this class, but she has extra credit built into everything. She is very straight forward, honest, and fair in her explanations and her grading.
Dr. D is the best teacher in the whole school. I had no interest in physics until I took her class. She makes everything easy to understand and she teaches in a very fun way. Also, she almost always has candy to share. Extra credit built in everywhere!
comming in the first class of the semester, i thought she will be the toughest teacher ever. but as the semester progressed, i realized she is the most helpfull and rewarding teacher. tough on the outside but a soft hearted helpfull person inside. she not only loves physics but also FOOTBALL!!!!
Dr.Damcott is by far the best science teacher I ever had. Yes the class is hard and challenging but she makes it so much easier and acctually really fun. Attending lecture is not mandatory but you will miss out a lot if you don't show up. Study hard and it will pay off.
I hated every minute i had to spend at this class. she wasts a lot of time talking about useless information than on the actual material. she doesn't do a lot of in-class problem solving and the homework is really tricky so you have to ask her for help on your own time, she will help you i'll give her that.
She is very spirited and lively in her teaching. I'm sure she knew that most of the students are not going into sci/eng, so kept it real. You WILL have to work VERY hard for this course. However, she gives a lot of help and extra credit. If you understand CONCEPTS and how to do a variety of problems, you will be A okay. Take her if you need physics
She is hard but really nice and helpful. She knows that Physics is hard, that's why she gives out lots of extra credits to help raise your grade. Her tests are hard but fair. If you study, you'll be fine.
She is a teacher that understands that physics is a class that most kids are forced to take so it is hard. She was very helpful throughout the whole semester and I highly reccomended her to anyone that is ready to work hard and for anyone that wants to do well. You have to study and read the book in order to pass or even take her test and her test
3/4 of my section dropped this class!! This lady has mood swings - too many "for instances" when she took points off irrelevent things - said it was OUR responsibility to make sure the student next to us was in class on time, threatened to take 10pts. off EVERYONE'S grade for people being late. PLAYS FAVORITES. on a power trip... TAKE GEPPHERT!
She's really cool!!!! I had her for phy121 and phy122. Very clear, and gives great lectures every time. Remember, both are hard classes, so you need to put a lot of effort into them.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR PHYSICS!!! you will regret it. I wish I was one of the smart ones and dropped at the beginning of the semester. She expects way too much from her students, homework quizzes are way too difficult to figure out. She goes over the easy stuff in class and the homework is 10x harder. Tests are rediculous. Our class average was a 57%
THIS IS NOT LIKE HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS! This class is very difficult no matter what teacher you take at harper. She offers a lot of extra credit. You have to work your ass off and have a good amount of natural talent to pull off an A. Most were happy with a C. Offers a good amount of extra credit. F average on the tests. Hard class.
She is one of the best teacher I have ever had.Physics class is one of the hardest class but she makes it too interesting. She helps a lot. There are so many extra credit oppertunities. Go to class and you will be fine. Don't hesistant to ask questions. She is too friendly.
Dr. D. is one of those rare professors who doesn't teach inside a microcosm, understanding her students have other demands, and takes that into account where she's able. She knows her subject, and doesn't simply "teach from the book," but tries to get at concepts from different angles. Don't skip the homework. Ask questions. Tests are fair.
She knows the subject, tries to make class interesting, always answers any questions or emails right away... but if your first language is not English, you might have some difficulties in communicating to her.Immigrants are not very welcomed, oops
Damcott is awesome!! She "dumbs it down" and no one ever seems to have to ask questions because she explains everything so immaculately. She gives PLENTY of opportunities for extra credit and gives you 10 extra points on every test. As long as you do the homework and understand it you are guaranteed a good grade. I STRONGLY recommend her!
Great teacher! She wants you to learn and understands this is a hard subject. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and if you do what she says you will pass the class. She has a good sense of humor, and understands a lot of us are taking this class and want to move on with our lives! Take advantage of her office hours and ask questions in class.
Excellent teacher. I came in wondering if I could do it, but she explained everything very well. The class style was very informal, too. She wasn't the easiest grader (beware of rubrics!) but she gave a lot of extra credit at the end, not to mention an extra 10 points onto every exam.
Simply Awesome! Show how much you are passionate about physics, then you will get what you want.
Dr. D is an awesome professor & a great woman! She tries her hardest to make sure everyone understands the material & will help you as much as you need. Like others have said.. Be veryyy careful with the rubrics. Follow them exactly.
Dr. D is extremely dedicated to her students success. She gives a multitude of ways for students struggling to get help and has an open door policy. This is not an easy class, nor should it be. You need to work your butt off to get a good grade, but it will undoubtedly prepare you for future engineering classes. Highly recommend.
In my opinion she is the best PHY201 teacher Harper has. She's very clear & is good at preparing you for tests. Also do the practice problems she gives in class, problems similar to those are on her tests. Make sure to stay on top of your game cuz she likes to give out pop quizzes. Be VERY clear and concise w/ lab reports.
She's a nice woman and tries to make class entertaining. She gives really clear lectures, however physics can only be so easy. Her tests are really hard so you have to make sure to put in a lot of hours if you want to do well in the class. The labs are okay, and the homework quizzes are also hard & online.
Dr D is by far my favorite teacher so far. Class is hard tho so don't mistake her as being the devil. Engineering is not easy. This will probably be the hardest class you take at harper but if theres a teacher to take it with, its def her. Gonna miss her next semester.
She treats you like you're smarter than you actually. Assumes that you know a lot about science and back round information. I feel like the exams are almost unrealistically difficult, the practice problems won't adequately prepare you. Look for other sources for practice. Get a good group to prepare with.
Very straightforward. If you put in the effort you will succeed.
BEWARE DO NOT TAKE! Took her last semester and she is mean and strict. I am a smart student who is majoring in engineering and always gets good grades and she was bad. No help outside of class. No chance to get ur questions answered. If u don't use her problem solving method u get instant zero. Harsh to the core!
Prof Damcott is a great teacher. She does give pop quizzes but most of the time she will hint at it ahead of time. Do the labs as she tells you or you will lose a lot of points. The tests aren't that easy so use the practice problems from class to practice for them. Better than most other physics teachers at Harper.
She is an amazing teacher. I've taken this class with Graessle had friends who took marsh and Decaro and let's just say if she isn't teaching 201 then don't take it that semester. I'm not joking, she's that good. But just because she's a good teacher doesn't mean it's an easy A. STUDY STUDY STUDY. Do the homework do well on the tests then the final
An excellent teacher. Physics 201 is calculus-based physics; It's not easy. Be prepared to study and work outside of class if you want to succeed. She is always there and willing to answer questions, but at the end of the day she will hold you to standards. Lectures were very helpful and tests covered exactly what she said they would.
Only teaches the very basic principles in class and is not helpful in learning applications for homework and tests. Does not believe in curving despite class average for tests being 54%
Dr.D is probably the best professor for PHY201 as of now. The technicality of the topic is geared towards engineering students. Focus on problem sets posted on Blackboard, not the textbook, Dr.D has different way of writing questions. I found it easier to get used her style. There is no "curve" on test but there is some curve and some extra credit.
I only had Dr. D for a once a week class, but she is one of the kindest people I've ever meet. She wants everyone to succeed and was very approachable outside of class.
Dr. D is easily one of Harper's best professors! Her lectures are so clear I didn't have to open a textbook once the entire semester. Labs are brutal though, so beware. Dr. D is so approachable and is always willing to have a conversation outside of class. Detail freak, so pay careful attention to everything. Gives nice EC opportunities. Take her!
Dr. D is an amazing professor for PHY 201. You do have to show up and do the work expected, but that should be expected in any college course. The class itself requires a lot of work, but Dr. D is so helpful and will take as much time as needed to make sure you do well in the class. I would highly recommend taking for any physics class!!!
I really didn't like this teacher's strict grading system, and she's very picky about little details in lab work. She is kind of lenient for some questions on exams. Her class is a class you don't want to slack off in. Pop quizzes every once in a while. Doesn't round grades, had an A all semester but final exam brought me to 89%, so overall got a B
The best prof at harper! Her exams and labs are insanely tough, phy is tough, but she's so good at teaching/explaining and so helpful outside her class that if you study and do practice problems, you'll be golden. Shes clear/organized in her lectures, and rlly wants her students to succeed. Pop quizzes, 3 exams, 12 pre/post labs, and webassign hw.
Deborah is literally THE best teacher ever. jk. horrible grading system, useless talk about her cats all the time, no reviews for exams, homework is very hard, lots of labs and quizzes.
Physics is a hard class but she made it very easy to learn. Gave great examples and kept the class interested even through the 4 hour lectures. I would recommend her to anyone that actually wants to learn and understand the material. The only disappointment was when I realized she was teaching phy202 next semester
Engineering 100 was a fun class to take. It revolved around building certain skills as engineers and students, with a lot of guest lecturers. The projects we had were always fun and involved the entire class. However this course was 1 credit hour, so I am unsure how tough she is in her other courses, notably Physics.
The best professor I've ever had, hands down. She genuinely cares about your progress in the course and is incredibly good at teaching the material. Even after I was done with her class I still went to her for advice because of the impact she had on me. She can be strict at times but as long as you try your hardest she'll go the extra mile for you.
She is an ok professor. As this class is really difficult she has to understand the students stand point. And please be ready to study all by yourself
DON'T take her. you will have to study a lot on your own.
Why are there so many right hand rules
"You are already tiring us out and it is only week 1..." these are her words. Does this sound like somebody who cares about their students? If we are tiring, just quit your job and let someone who actually wants to teach do their job. Nobody is happy about the current situation, but this is ridiculous.
Don't take this class. She said that students have to spend at least 16 hours to pass this class (We have other classes as well!). She wants everything to be shown, and every problem has to be solved in her way. No other methods can be used to solve the problems, if you do that it's automatically 0 even if the answer is correct. Ridiculous...
Her exams are impossible, no matter how much you study, you will never have enough time to finish everything. With each exam, more problems are added, and they are just getting more complicated. She wants her students to fail obviously, I wish I had dropped this class at the beginning instead of wasting my time studying and ruining my other grades.
Even though I have been attending all of her classes, I am still struggling with the class so bad. The exercise she gave in class are okay, but when it comes to the exam your mind will be empty because it feels like everything new to you. I hope that I passed this class because you will see her in every semester if the system is online.
I was in a merger of Dr. D and Prof Marsh, and it probably was one of the most demanding classes I have ever taken. Dr. D is nearly always accessible when she isn't in a lecture. If you have a question about a lab or homework assignment, NEVER hesitate to shoot her a message on Remind, she can take anywhere from 1-10 minutes to answer.
Dr. D is a well respected professor. Too bad I was in a merger with her and Marsh because I feel that if she taught the class by herself, I would have learned much better. However, she sometimes goes on talking too much about stuff not related to class such as her cats. Overall, not a bad professor, but not that great. Physics is just a tough class
Bad reviews don't do her justice. As someone has already mentioned, it is probably because this class was a merger. Things were explained well, but grading policy (which I believe was not her idea) was very harsh. I am lucky that I got a C, just enough so that I can fulfill the prerequisite for taking PHY202.
She is a great teacher, but unfortunately did not teach this semester, Marsh did. Most of the exams were extremely hard, we were being tested on Ph.D. level stuff rather than what we actually learned in class. Exam averages were around 50-60s yet neither Marsh nor Damcott thought to curve them.
I was in Dr D and Mrs Marsh physics 201 class. They both are horrible. Her labs are very LONGGG and don't make sense. The labs are due on Sunday and tests are on Monday morning. There is literally no time to study. She teaches well but the practice is not enough and THE EXAMS ARE NOTHING LIKE THE CLASS LECTURES. PLEASE DONT TAKE THEM.
Finally an exam with problems actually covered in class, she should keep writing them in future.
I took PHY 201 over the summer with Ms. Marsh and Dr. D combined. Honestly, I have never felt so demoralized taking a class. The two of them would send out updates on a weekly basis berating the students and literally telling us how we weren't trying hard enough. The way they spoke to us was extremely unprofessional and degrading :( Don't take!
Very knowledgeable, approachable, amazing at explaining concepts! Really made you work(pun1). Had combo class w/ Ms Marsh. Although STRICT grading & deadlines, it forces(pun2) you to keep up & helps w/ understanding standard methods for solving. Attend/watch lectures & do LOTS of PRACTICE to do well! (her cats are cool too) **physics is just tough
When it comes to a role as important as a college professor who holds ability to affect a students future college sucess, Professor Damcotts, and Professor Marshs extremely strict class only pray on the small mistakes that busy college students can make. Their complex system of inconsideration and specificity is unnecessary for a community college.
Believe me dont do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got everything right on the exam but didn't do it exactly the way they want? That's 60%. GO TO SI. Without them, you will fail. DO EXTRA HOMEWORK. Without that, you will fail because the exams are nothing at all what they teach in class. Good luck.
Write EVERYTHING on papers, I mean EVERYTHING, including the amount of times someone took a breath. You'll see what I mean. Other than that the grading is pretty harsh. Idk how I got an A. This is a 1 credit hour class but I put more hours into this class than a 5 credit hour course.
If you are not there to learn and to get credits only, please don't insult her dedication to teach and inspire students to learn. I am student of 2005 class and a pharmacist now. "Study in advance and stay focused in the class" is the only mantra to learn physics from the best teachers like her. My daughter is studying my notes from her classes.
Grades slowly, expects you to take the fall for it. How are you supposed to learn from your mistakes if you're not given your work back in time? Tests are heavy on your grade and she grades those with pickiness too. The lectures do not go into depth, expect to study on your own a ton. Has a good personality. For a professor though, just don't.
She is nice and does seem to enjoy teaching. The tests are really difficult compared to the problems done during lecture. The whole 18 hours for a C isn't true it depends. I would say more 10-14 for a C or B. I just wish there was more practice offered like a review session before tests outside of normal class time. Good luck and do well on hw/lab
Lovely personality and seems to enjoy teaching but her grades are more a measure of how well students can follow her instructions and memorize the methods she wants than how well they understand physics concepts. It's her way or the highway for the most part.
Extremely lecture heavy, go to class. Exams are brutal and any mistakes will cost you even small ones. Even if you study for the exams and do bad its your fault for not studying enough. Do not look for help because there is no sympathy. Drops 2 labs and 1 exam which helps. Everything is your fault and never hers or her lectures. Lots of memorizing.
Grades are always behind but she does not take any responsibility for that but expects you to take responsibility for failing an exam. How are we supposed to learn anything if everything is handed back 3-4 weeks later. Exams are a lot harder than the homework. Class exam averages are between 55%-65% most of the semester. Write or draw every detail!
SO DEGRADING TO STUDENTS she and marsh sent out emails for physics that were so rude and her taking points off for the most irrelevant things was so unfair and shouldn't reflect on your grade at all and I encourage this semesters students to speak up about this
I AM WARNING YOU. I *WANTED to be an astrophysicist and I almost quit my dream after taking this class, I pulled through and got an A- with the cost of my sanity, which was expensive so it it's important that you DEFINITELY DO NOT take it BUT it's either her or the other dude you're screwed either way and this class took years off my life
no. just no.
Do not take the worst!!!
Very tough grader when it comes to labs, exams are difficult and are 50% of your grade, and there is a lot of work assigned every week. However, she gives many extra credit opportunities so as long as you do decent on the exams it is possible to get an A. Based on what I've heard from people who took her and Marsh, she is the better option.
Lectures are helpful, she gives good examples and explains how problems or topics might be applied. Makes class interesting and enjoyable. She is a tough grader but she does give opportunities to improve your grade. I came out of this class with an even greater appreciation for physics than I started the semester with.
This is a HARD class no matter which professor. Don't take this class expecting an A if you aren't willing put in 10-20 hours of work every week. Lots of extra credit so do every single one. Great lectures so make sure to go and ask questions. Tests are hard and 50% of your grade so you need to understand the material and PUT UNITS ON EVERY NUMBER.
Professor D's lectures are long and writing intensive. The information Professor D gives prior to exams like practice questions and race problems are more than enough to at least get a B. If this is your first time taking Professor D, take time in understanding how she grades and her expectations for assignments. Don't forget the BIG UGLY!
She's nice and great at teaching, lectures are heavy but easy to digest. Tough grader on labs. Gives good partial credit on exams which are difficult, however if you use ALL resources given to study, you'll do great. Follow her format for everything and take advantage of the extra credit!!!
Dr.Damcott is a great professor. Her expectations are clear and the quality of work she wants from the student is portrayed clearly. Her lectures are informative and engaging while keeping it interesting and fun. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities so do all of them. She is very caring and encourages students to come to office hours.
The content could be a bit difficult at first but if you simply go to her office hours, she will simplify the problems down so much and help you out! Deborah is easily the best physics professor at Harper. Trust me, if you can take her, do it! you wont regret it.
This is by far the hardest professor I've come across. She makes up arbitrary rules for solving problems when you could solve it in faster ways. During class, there would be times where she would say disrespectful, unprofessional remarks to students who asked genuine questions. This made students avoid asking questions. Do not take this professor.
