She is really nice but I never understood anything she talked about. She was very confusing.
She tries to be helpful, but she can be really confusing and boring. It's better to read the text than attend her lecture because she just keeps talking.
she's really nice and you can space out while she's talking and still learn something
She gives good examples and suplements the text well. Chem is a hard class and reading the text is required. Exton helps to solidify and explain the confusing topics. She is one of the better chem professors at the univeristy. However, the drawback is that her tests are hell.
I didnt realize how unfair and hard she was until i took my last term with another teacher, She seemed like she was out to 'trick' students. Her test were not representative of the material covered in class. I am glad i swithced.

Great prof. Got to be her student as well as peer learning assistant. Not the easiest class but liked the teaching approach.
Her tests are hard, but she does a good job of explaining things in class and does an excellent job of helping you out in office hours.

Text was better than attending lecture. She talks so much it makes things hard to understand and confusing. Super hard texts. Amazing review sessions before hand though.
Exton is great, explains things well. Go to her office hours, she is patient and is always willing to help.
Best if you do the reading and sample questions before coming to classs
Really clear in class, and good with office hours. Best if you read the material before and after class. All notes listed on website-very helpful.
very easy to understand and open to questions for more clarity
She was extremely organized, clear and understandable. Lectures were a must! They were so clear that I learned best from them. If you want to learn general chemistry in a way where you ACTUALLY understand it, and want to apply it to more advanced courses like organic chemistry, which is what I did, take her class! Ochem was easier for me becaus
She is obviously very intelligent, however she seems to feel a need to put waaay too many trick questions, not enough information on tests, does not give you information on your grade until the end of the term, and does not tell you what she expects out of you. you are stuck guessing what she wants all the time. Herrick for Gen. Chem though def.
SHE-DEVIL! impossible tests. the quiz and test averages are always around 55% take a hint lady
She is a very nice person, but a horrible teacher. Her class is way hard and her tests are extremely tricky. Her class just makes you feel like you are stupid.
Exton is very intelligent but very bad at teaching! She made no attempt to make any of the material interesting! The class average grade on both midterm exams were in the 60's! Randy Sullivan the Lecture demonstrator was a better teacher than Exton!
These comments are unfair to Dr. Exton; I found that she was very available to students, even though many did not go to her office hours or set up appointments to see her. I got a D on the first midterm, and then asked her for help. I studied everyday then after and ended up getting an A in the class. Make an effort and you will do well.
This is such a hard class to take. After I failed her midterm I stopped going to her classes and started going to professor Herrick's classes (which, by the way are fantastic) and thanks to his classes aced the final and ended up with an A in her class. Despite her being really nice, she just doesn't cut it as a teacher.
Dr. Exton is one of the best teachers that I've taken at the university. Chemistry is a tough subject, but if you put effort into the class and ask questions she makes everything as clear as possible. Her tests are tricky, but very understandable if you actually take the time to study the information. If you fail, it's your fault, not hers.
i went to every class and still did porrrly. her tests are non do-able. Difficult to understand. Lots of trick questions. Gen chem is not her cup of tea. Lots better at Chem lab lecture. She expects u to already know the things that shes teaching..like its review. =(
This class is horrible
she should not be teaching. Average grade was D- on the midterm.
Chem is a difficult subject- so keep that in mind when you take it! She makes clear what to memorize and uploads notes and test answer keys so you can check your progress. Also good at keeping students informed on chemistry help sessions if you still feel lost... not bad!?
Dr. Exton is a great Chem professor. She is challenging but really willing to help you. You will learn way more than with the other chem professors.
Does not evaluate situations with a logical thought process. Is not there to help the student succeed 100%,and is more about generality keeping all students regulated to guidelines no matter if the circumstances are very obvious to go another way.
She is so great! Just take time to study for this class and you will do fine!
Deborah Exton waters down each lab until they are basic tutorials for fools. The grading rubrics are flawed and you will not learn how to write a college level lab report coming out of general chemistry. I feel scared and extremely unprepared for higher level lab classes because of her poor teaching and even poorer TA selection
Professor Exton is a very concise teacher who is obviously very intelligent and knows chemistry well. She can water down hard chemistry well enough for intro chem. students and make it easy and comprehensible enough for anyone to pass. Going to class is really, really helpful.
Notes are misleading regarding homework and tests
Dr. Exton seems like a very intelligent, strong woman but she did not impress me as a lecturer. She moved very quickly through slides and seemed to expect students to already be familiar with advanced chemistry concepts. I had her for lab (so I only heard her lecture 4-5 times) and chose to avoid her for lecture class (chem 221).
I'm a non trad student, and this was my first science class is almost 8 years. She did an amazing job, kept lectures interesting, and the tests reflected her lectures fabulously!
Professor Exton was wonderful. She is a very, very intelligent woman and knows her chemistry. Science was never my strong subject, but I was able to pass her lab because she explained in wonderful detail. I would say anyone could pass her class as long as they attend lecture and ask questions if they get confused!
Exton definitely knows her Chemistry, but her articulation and teaching is a bit unclear. I had her for the labs, but she still seems to zip through the slides and assume the majority understands.
Extremely smart, and teaches well but hw is hard and the tests are just like the homework. the midterms are 20 questions multiple choice (harder than it sounds) so its hard to get a good grade if you screw up on only a few problems, no partial credit.
Overall, I think she's a great teacher, but her tests are hard. We have iClicker questions almost everyday, which means attendance is pretty mandatory or you will lose those points for that day. Luckily for 221, we didn't have any quizzes but the midterms and final are such a huge percentage of your grade, so take it if you're a good test taker
I really liked her! She does expect you to do some studying on your own but I took chem in high school and found this class pretty easy. She follows the chapters in the book closely and posts notes online, so if you miss something it's easy to catch up. She did a really good job at using examples and doing demos to explain the material. Recommend.
I remember going into her class nervous because people told me her tests were much harder than the other professors'. But she is such a god teacher and she does examples in class that are exactly like all the ones on her tests. I really didn't find myself studying for that long before each test, but you do need to study. Don't expect an A without.
She is a great teacher, and truly cares about her students. Most UO teachers are there for the research, but for her it's just a bonus. She isn't confusing, but the homework can be--and doesn't always correspond with what she's taught so you have to guess and check the answer to get it right.
She is very intelligent and clearly conveyed the topics she was discussing, however there is SO much absolutely essential info that she does not cover in the lectures and it's extremely hard to keep up. There are no quizzes but two midterms and a final and the midterms (20 multiple choice Q's) are extremely hard.
Tests are standardized, avg. of 20 questions. Students who put tremendous effort getting extra help average C's while those who don't are peaking at F's. A lot of information, not sure what is important vs. what isn't. More explanation on concepts are needed, not only examples. It's a conceptual thing and if students don't get the concept they fail.
LOVE this professor. She is an angel and the sweetest, compassionate lady who is also brilliant and makes chemistry as painless as possible, even though the material is difficult. Best chemistry professor at UO!
Wonderful professor! Her midterms and final is challenging, but if you've studied hard and kept up with the material you'll do well. She explains things clearly, so even though she's a tough teacher, she teaches you so well that if you study, you'll be fine.
I love Exton! She is extremely nice and funny in class. She keeps class interesting which can be hard with Chemistry. She is very clear and doesn't mind trying different styles of teaching if one way doesn't seem to work. She's a great Chem teacher and you'll miss her when you move on to Chimploys class.
Chemistry is a pretty content heavy class...and has some pretty tough material to learn but Dr. Exton does a really good job of breaking it up and explaining it. Compared to what I've heard about other professors, I would recommend picking Exton. You still have to work hard, but she will help you through it!
Tough class. Good instruction. Midterm 1 and 2 pretty hard. Final exam slightly easier. Spend plenty of time on this class. Don't take this class with other difficult classes unless you have no job.
Chemistry is a difficult enough subject on its own. It certainly doesn't need the added benefit of exams designed to be deliberately misleading to help it along. Exams list incorrect solutions or "correct" ones with rounding errors as possible choices to mislead you into thinking you did the problem correctly. Decent lecturer, but beware of exams.
Absolutely great professor. Highly recommended. Personally, I just transferred out of The University of Oregon and will greatly miss her. She makes extremely hard concepts easy to understand. If you need help, she is willing to schedule an appointment and also has fantastic office hours. Read the book before you go to class if you want an A.
Great professor! Highly recommended.
Hard course. You will have to work your butt off to get an A in the final class in the general chemistry series. The professor is highly recommended.
She's very clear, her voice isn't irritating like some professors, and she always brings her dog to office hours
Examples are not very clear, wastes alot of time with technical issues (daily basis), weekly homework, almost daily learnsmart online, lots of reading needed to understand the class, delays on posting grades, tough tests, tends to get irritable with noise from people in the lecture hall. retaking class to understand material before going on.
Really hard class to get a high grade in. The average on the exams are around a 65% so study your ass off in order to get the grade you want.
Gives plenty of recourses to study for exams, but you have to put in the time to utilize them. Homework is all online which is either lame or cool depending on your own perspective.
Deborah would not take time to discuss grade and was very unhelpful.
Make sure to attend lectures! Chemistry is no easy A, but read the textbook & go through lecture slides for clarification. Just do practice problems and go to office hours if you need help. Great professor and class overall!
Be prepared to work extra hard for a good grade in this class. You will have to truly understand the material, go to office hours or tutoring, read the book, and practice chemistry problems on your own in order to succeed. This course is demanding, but the professor cares about all the students understanding.
Dr. Exton is super passionate about teaching and wants her students to succeed. Do the online homework on time so you don't fall behind in the class and always do the practice exams before taking her tests. It's a challenging class, but if you pay attention and put the effort into it, it'll be worth your while.
Final grade relies heavily on the midterms and final, but if you can follow along in class you will do fine. You do have to study, but there's not many topics that are hard to understand. There's lots of office hours you can go to and SUPERchem helps a lot.
Very nice person, decent teacher. Has good lecture slides and usually explains clearly. She tells you what she expects from you which is very helpful.
Exton is a solid teacher. Not the most interesting lectures, and the material is somewhat difficult, so you must put in effort outside of class, very possible to get a good grade though.
Dr. Exton is a phenomenal professor, extremely knowledgeable and really does care about chemistry. There is a lot of homework, but the homework is almost like a study guide and it helps a lot so do it! if chm221 is required for your major, definitely recommend Dr. Exton!
She expects her students to be very knowledgeable about chemistry from the start. She wrote the textbook but she never referenced it. By far the hardest class I have ever taken and I would not recommend unless you NEED it for your major. Tests are extremely hard and you will constantly be doing online homework every week. Falling behind is SO easy!
Very hard course. Be sure to show up to each class to get credit and do all of the homework. Read the textbook outside of class and probably get a tutor too because it's fast paced and easy to get behind.
Deborah is great. 20/10, would recommend. Super fun, wears costume on halloween. Tests are hard, just study. Read the book! Preview and review. Go to office hours if needed, she's fun. Don't skip any ALEKS or Sapling, trust.
Dr. Exton is a very sweet and caring person. She is extremely approachable and loves it when students ask her questions. She won't be annoyed if you ask something stupid. The lectures seem pretty long, but she keeps them interesting; she puts a lot of memes in her slideshows. Success in the course takes effort, but is very possible.
I loved Exton's way of teaching. The class is hard but going to class and taking good notes will get you a good grade. The exams reflect the clicker questions in class along with a few about the concepts learned in class and are not terribly difficult.
She was not good at teaching and not helpful when asking questions. Was expected to just know how to do things without her even bringing it up in class.
Exton is really an amazing professor and wants you to succeed. She gets that chem can be hard to jump into and gives multiple opportunities for you to do well. Sapling, Aleks, and clicker q's make a great grade cushion and will honestly bump your grade up a good 7 percent as long as you complete it all. If you want to succeed in this class you will
Deborah is an amazing teacher, who really understands the craft of Chemistry. She really wants to help her students learn, however the content is insanely hard. Read chapters BEFORE going to lecture, their review them again. Her study cycle in her syllabus isn't a joke, I highly recommend following it. Overall great class, just be prepared.
There is a huge curve in this class, homework heavily boosts your grade and Exton is an AMAZING teacher. She also teaches you HOW to be a better learner which is great for first term college students.
You learn a lot if you really put in the effort. There is ton of help available all of the time and she cares about your grade. Grades go in pretty quick. Listen to the tips about how to study. Do what you're supposed to do from the start and you'll earn the grade you want!
She gives many examples and explains the chem thoroughly. The class was HARD but she did a good job teaching it. Prepare to Study!
Dr. Exton is amazing! I've taken the same class from another professor at UO, and the difference is crazy. Dr. Exton is very knowledgeable and passionate about science, and due to her experience teaching (close to 30 years) she knows how to present the topics in a clear and interesting way, while cutting out all the unnecessary information.
Dr. Exton is fine as a professor. She isn't always super available for students and usually has her TA's deal with everything. In terms of teaching, she does her best to teach a difficult subject. She isn't amazing but she also isn't the worst. Chem is a subject that you really need to study for so attend class!
Tbh, I prefer Exton over some of the other professors that I have had. She makes her expectations clear and tells students what they need to do to succeed. As others said, she isnt the best at teaching, but she manages to get through slides and will ask for any clarifications. She even will devote a few days to explain how to study and learn.
An absolute gem once you've taken other chemistry professors. I wish I would've stayed with Exton all year if she taught it.
Exton requires you to buy the textbook that SHE WROTE for a crazy amount of money. Not organized and when the lab class was put online, she was not prepared to do that. She changes deadlines and mixes up the way that canvas works.
I don't know if it is because of the transition to online that has made her worse but I don't know a single person that enjoys her class. Her online lectures are not helpful and the TA's don't ever make anything clear. What really made me upset was that she assigned our longest homework the day after thanksgiving.
Sigh. There were instances where answers were incorrectly marked on canvas for lecture quizzes, the lecture videos themselves just repeat the textbook, you have to pay an exorbitant amount of money on TWO DIFFERENT learning programs (Aleks isn't bad after the Prerequisite assignment though. Also holds proctoring over you to guilt trip you.
Dr. Exton was a good professor for CH221! I had her online so the lectures were confusing at times, but she is always available for office hours and willing to help you with whatever you need in order to succeed. Make sure you stay on top of the lectures and homework - there is a good amount of work to do but it is easy to manage.
This class was the reason why I transferred out of UO. Dr. Exton is very intelligent but makes it very obvious that she doesn't care about how students do in her class. For our comprehensive final exam, she cautioned us to "pick a letter of the day" for the questions we didn't answer because there was no way we could finish the final.
Only problem with Professor Exton are her exams. To get a good grade you cant afford to miss more than three or four questions, but some of the questions cover abstract material never covered in class
There isnt anything special, but Exton is certainly a decent professor. The lectures were relevant, and the course wasnt that difficult. As long as you did the reading, there shouldnt be any problem passing. Sometimes the course and grading guidelines were disorganized, but nothing that couldnt be figured out before assignments were due.
I only had to take her again because it's required and she's the only one that teaches it. There's so much assignments that we don't even go over in the lectures and the exams were hard and confusing. The exams are worded weirdly and long which is super confusing. The exams weigh so much and impacts our grade by a ton if you miss a few problem.
I took the class online it's so much work. She told us at the beginning to plan to spend 20 hours a week on the course and there are multiple things due everyday. We had to buy two online programs, one textbook, and two more textbooks if you take the lab. The tests were confusing and so much of your grade. It's clearly a weed-out course.
Exton is your typical old school professor that only cares about whether or not you do her assignments. Her online class was basically self taught bc she didn't even have zoom lecture. Doesn't give extra credit opp, doesn't curve ANYTHING, doesn't have student's best interest. The test for this course are literally 65% of your overall grade.
This class is TOUGH and I don't struggle with science. Changed majors bc I had to take 3 of these. There are 2-4 assignments per day and three two hour finals throughout the term. The homework is repetitive and is busy work, I rarely learned anything from it. Office hours usually have a set lesson plan so you can't go in to just ask a question.
Doesn't teach anything, I learned most of this course from outside materials and skipping through her lectures for answers. She only cares about homework and exam scores so if you don't want to spend 6 hours a day teaching yourself doing 6 different assignments, don't take her class
Exton is by far the best professor I've had during online. The lectures and quizzes are short and straightforward if you pay attention. The class is hard but she provides a lot of outside resources and extra help. Use the textbook and go to review sessions. I never had her in person, but online Exton was great.
I learned absolutely nothing but I passed. The online format with the daily videos and aleks is a poor system. I learn mostly from outside sources that are actually banned. Im a chem major and I know the next classes I take are going to be humbling. Three giant tests that are most of your grade (more than half) and they are two hours each.
Expect at least 2 assignments a day PLUS three tests every 2 weeks that count for most of your grade. Says she uses a (fake) proctoring system during tests, and office hours are just extra hw. Made us spend a crazy amount of money on ALEKS and a book SHE WROTE, you teach yourself the whole time and do busy work, cant remember a thing i learned.
Prof. Exton has a ton of quizzes and tests every three weeks. She is a tough grader and her lectures are hard to follow, and sometimes what her TAs say doesnt match what she says. Pretty much self-taught myself through this class. Its manageable if youre self-sufficient, but maybe consider another Professor if youre not.
I love Dr. Exton! She is very smart and is a very good teacher. Easy to learn from. Don't be scared for Gen. Chem!!!
Debby brings a smile to your face. Her sidekick Mark and her have a lil something going on. They love to do demonstrations in class. The classis in fact difficult and you work for your grade but it is not debby's fault that we are not as talented as her. In full honesty this class is hard but do-able. Doing the Aleks sucks but helps review topics.
My biggest issue with the way she taught this class was that the homework assignments had to be completed before the lecture in which we actually learned the topics. Four times a week I would slog through assignments just to actually get an explanation the next day. Very frustrating. We also had 3 midterms and a final which wasn't ideal.
Exton is a solid professor. It is explicitly clear that she knows chem, but she is not the most effective lecturer. She often fails to explain concepts clearly. However, she is a very nice woman and easy to listen to. It is easy to stay engaged and it is made explicitly clear what is expected... however, tests can be very difficult.
Shes an alright professor, I wouldnt really recommend her, the class itself isnt horrible but you just have to stay on top of your work, I personally didnt use true text book or go to office hours but I recommend it.
Chem is always hard, but Exton was actually a pretty good teacher. She listens to the feedback you give her and she does lots of example problems. The best way to survive in this class is to go to Superchem if you need help with the homework and go as much as you can. You do not want to fall behind, so go to office hours too. Lots of work to do ok
ehhh. Shes not a terrible teacher, she explains content pretty thoroughly in lectures. However, there is SO much homework. Be prepared to do enough work for 2 courses. And tests are pretty hard. Its very hard to keep up with everything in this course.
I only had her for the lab lecture. Very little amount of helpful instruction. I wouldn't have attended lectures if they didn't use iClickers for participation points. You definitely need to go to every lab session, though. Pre-labs and lab reports will take you hours to finish, especially because the guidelines are so vague.
Dr. Exton is a solid professor but is not one that I would recommend to many. She's clearly passionate about chemistry but is not entirely effective at lecturing and giving information. She gives so many exams and they are all worth a solid chunk of your grade. Overall, I would take her if you have to, but look into alternate professors if you can.
Not flexible
She was the coolest and pretty understanding. Topics weren't super difficult and she did a great job explaining everything. Wish she taught CH222.
The gen chem curriculum is rigorous- much of what people complain about have to do with the class itself, not the instructor. The material has to be taught very quickly, so she can't spend too much time on one topic. However, if you go to office hours, she will walk you through problems and reexplain concepts. You just have to go and ask.
Many tests throughout the term and they're super hard without enough time. Teacher is understanding sometimes but also grades heavily based on participation so you have to be there everyday
Keep up with ALEKS and do practice exams and you will be good. There were a ton of office hour options too which was nice. She was always happy to answer questions.
Dr. Exton's fantastic at explaining tricky concepts and set up her class to allow any student to succeed if they just put in the work.
For an asynchronous class I feel like her lectures were great, and I learned a lot. Fair warning though, this class is fairly difficult and test averages were around 65% for each, you have to study a lot.
Absolute Battle-axe, no nonsense. Course is very well put together and well taught though. Difficult, heavy workload, does its job of weeding out the weak. The stuff she makes you do which seems annoying (ALEX, large homework load) actually helps a lot with retaining the material. Takes a lot of work ethic but you can do well in it. Good luck!
TESTS. Do not take if you are a bad test taker like myself. You would think if the class average on every test was failing that there would be a curve or something like that but she doesn't do that. She was nice to communicate with and understanding.
If you are a bad test taker do not even try her class.
