really interesting lectures. never fell asleep once. nice woman and seems to love teaching. gives you all the questions to the midterm and final in advance. if you go to class you never need to read the book.
I'll give her a filibuster.
Agree with comments about lectures. But was totally useless for help with papers. Knows subject matter, but completely incapable of normal human interaction.
Easy class if you go to class and get notes. Watch our for the midterms... don't underestimate the hard questions.
Very nice professor. Gives you a clear picture of what she expects. Willing to help and get students involved even in large classes. I think she communicats very well with students. I reccommend! If you put effort in you'll do good.
Her class is SO HARD... nearly impossible to pass.
So incompetent! Her students routinely know more about political science than she does. I wonder how she made it through grad school. This class has less depth than the prerequisite course (pols 021) does. Pathetic!
What did I learn in this class this semester? Absolutely nothing. Except that Prof. Guber is boring and uninformative, and I will not take another class with her again.
I think she is a great teacher. I knew a lot of the material before I came to the class because I had taken a similar one in high school, and she kept me interested in the class and brought new light to some of the facts. Easy if you pay attention and take the notes. Keeps students engaged well. I recommend!
yea, she sucks. the class is always louder than she is and she doesn't say anything to get ppl to stop talking but she'll bite your head off if you try to go to the bathroom. everything in the class i already knew and she really does not make it interesting at all. try not to take a class with her.
Shw was the worst teacher i have ever had. She also gave the most boring lectures on earth. Shes not nice and definetly not understanding what so ever. My recomendation is if your not die hard at this class take a diffrent profesor.
easy grade. she makes power points off of which all quizzes are directly based. and she gives you the miderm and final grades ahead of time
Good prof and a nice lady too. Lectures were really interesting and she always knew her stuff.
I took her class online over the summer with a full time 40hr/week job. I tried so hard and THOUGHT I did all the required postings. When I got my grade she gave me a 55% on my postings because I didn't do ONE!! I had 14/15. IT was obsurd! I got a C all becuase of that stupid 55%, I got good grades other than that AHH I couldn't be more frustrated!
awesoem prof, makes class interesting with stories/cartoons etc and puts all powerpoints online
Very clear and concise lectures that utilize technology and powerpoint presentations. She gives two mid-terms and a final paper which are all easy. Just go to class, take notes, read the newspaper and you'll be fine. Also, throw in a grab with your paper. She loves graphs. Good prof. It's not about current events its about science of politics.
Very fair teacher, difficult, requires attendance. Her tests were pretty darn hard - and she only has a midterm and final. Quizzes weren't too tough if you attend class and read. Expects alot but runs a good class.
Great professor. She expects a lot but she gives a lot too.
Class is really interesting, lectures are really clear but take GOOD notes because she gives you the questions for mid term and final a head of time and the answers come from discussion of the slides, not the slides themselves. Tough grader REALLY HARD TO GET AN A she expects a lot.
Guber's great. A genuine and nice lady with a great sense of humor who is easily approachable. Her seminar is tough. You have to do the reading and participation is big factor in grading. Tech savvy, all the readings are online (except for a few books). A midterm and final along with a big paper. Do the reading and participate in class.
She is very, very smart she knows what she is talking about and makes it interesting with her sense of humor.
best teacher! i loved my polisci class with her this semester and am upset i couldn't get in for next. anyway, dr. guber is really really knowledgeable and always makes class interesting. this is one of the only classes i've actually looked forward to going to. take good notes, she gives you the exam questions ahead of time. not a hard grader.
If you view government with ANY skepticism, prepare to be annoyed because she worships the government and the Democratic party. Expect her to grade the written exams toughly. Her American Political Parties class uses the exact same power points as POLS021. She'd rather talk about Michelle Obama's new dress and useless CNN stories than anything.
This class wasn't terrible, but it was much more difficult than I would have imagined an introductory class to be. Your grade is made up of only 3 things and she grades the exams really hard but if you're into American politics and are willing to do all of the reading, it could be worse.
Do not take her online class, she is very unclear about her midterm and final paper and a very hard grader. Her class was the first where I got a C and it made my GPA go down. Avoid her online class.
some of the people saying she grades the midterm and final essays hard are CRAZY! she gives you all the questions in advance so that you can prepare answers and know what you want to write on the day of the exams. she is a great teacher and made this class super interesting. very thorough and clear. powerpoints help a lot, too.
Very interesting. Very nice. Straightforward.
Terrible professor. Don't take her class.
She is open during her office hours but she expects you to already know this stuff and for politics to come natural to you. (Which for me was not the case.)She's very sarcastic and funny but her tests and midterm sucked with the fill in the blanks.
I thought she was a wonderful teacher, especially for a required class. It's all lectures, but she makes them interesting. She is very original and funny, and the class is not hard at all. Her notes are complete, and basically are the questions on her tests and quizzes. Her voice is very nice to listen to, and overall she is a good teacher!
She's very nice and funny, but you don't learn very much, and the class is pretty dull. If you have to take political science, she's good because the class is easy.
DO NOT take her online class. She is extremely unclear about what she is looking for and is very rude. She is by far my worst teacher at UVM thus far.
I took this class because it was one of my requirements, but I have absolutely no interest in political science. I thought I did really well on the midterm and I received a C+. She doesn't really tell you what is on the quizzes, but it was helpful receiving the questions for the midterm in advance.
Prof. Guber is a very straightforward teacher. She has a syllabus and sticks to it reliably so you always know what you're getting into. There's quite a bit of reading, but if you've done it then the quizzes and exams will be a breeze.
Incredibly rude and condescending. Will go out of her way to humiliate those texting, doodling, etc. during the middle of lecture, will not provide any direction on what to study for a quiz or exam other than "know everything." I've never met a more unapproachable individual. The only thing going for her is her knowledge on the subject matter.
Awesome class! I took it just because it sounded interesting and now I'm considering minoring in political science. Professor Guber was great! If you pay attention you might really get something out of the class.
Deb is FAB. I loved her class but some peers were not so fond of it. Relevant lectures, and so so so helpful if you just ask. She seems intimidating but is so sweet really. Reading was very heavy but interesting, tests were difficult but manageable. You will definitely learn something from this class. I took away so much knowledge I didnt know
Keys to success with Guber: 1. Go to class (she takes attendance). 2. Study for tests and quizzes. 3. She doesn't give any review sessions/study guides: so PAY ATTENTION and TAKE NOTES. 4. Read the textbook and articles. Put in the effort, and you'll do fine!
Literally atrocious....... she gives you and hour and 15 minutes for the final.... and you have to write so much in that period of time.
If you love the material, this should be an easy class. The textbook is not necessarily mandatory, most stuff you can learn by taking notes in lecture. The class has a slight left-wing bias, which is to be expected of UVM. Guber is friendly and affable as long as you're respectful. Listen to lecture, don't text in class (you'll be caught).
No graded homework Two in class essays Final Paper for Final Exam Super Liberal and grades you based on her opinions
Professor Guber is amazing! Her class was pretty liberal biased (although how can it not be at UVM under a trump presidency) but very educational and fun. Quizzes were super easy and tests require a lot of studying. She knows her stuff, all her powerpoints are online but attendance is mandatory
I really liked Prof. Guber. I found her lectures to be interesting. However, if you take her POLS021 class be warned that tests are a large portion of your final grade so it's important to prepare for those. Articles assigned outside the textbook are very important (at least that is what I found with POLS021)
Hilarious lectures, real easy on the eyes, and very good about being clear with concepts
She spends class teaching the basics of American politics, stuff you should have learned in 5th grade, then uses the readings for all tests and most of the quizzes. Her exams are packed full, and she expects you to remember every detail from every case and class discussed or eluded to. Ridiculous that this class is required for all UVM students.
AMAZING. Thought I was gonna drop the class, went to the first lecture was captivated, now I'm a political science major. Shes incredible so interesting so wonderful
Prof. Guber was my favorite teacher this semester. Every time i left I called my dad and told him what she said. I really recommend taking her for POLS021. She's confident, her lectures are informative and interesting, and definitely a teacher I would want to work with again.
Very intelligent and engaging. Tests are essays w/ no grading criteria - highly subjective - just assigns whatever grade she thinks you deserve. Highly condescending when having a one-on-one conversation and makes herself unavailable for anything out of office hours. She made me not want to take another polysci classes ever again.
She is very smart and is very confident with her lectures. She is however really unapproachable and makes you feel stupid when meeting with her outside of class. She will call you out if you are on your phone in the middle of class. Her tests are ridiculous and she expects you to know everything she has taught you, but gives you no guidance.
Incredibly smart professor, knows exactly what she's talking about and always ready to answer any questions in class. Not a class you can slack off in though. Super worth all the hard work because everything you learn is relevant and insightful.
She was a great professor. Made lecture interesting and was very clear about what we needed to know to pass. Only graded on a few things though.
Her slides are literally just NYT and CNN headline articles and half the class is her reading full pages of quotes from newspapers and magazines which just espouse conventional wisdom on the basics of politics that anybody that pays half attention to the world would know. Takes attendence so you're forced to show up and listen to her pontificate!
First half of the semester was tough but not impossible. There are quizzes around once a week that have specific and vague questions. The midterm was extremely difficult and harshly graded. She got mad at me for emailing her once. Now that school is closed and everything is online the work increased x3 and is still graded harshly. Lowkey ruthless
She was kind of rude. Her lectures were good, tho. If you have a basic knowledge of politics and government, you should do fine.
The most notable feature of POLS 125 is that 40 progressive (and often pro-Bernie) students finish the course understanding why an extreme candidate will not be able to win the Democrat's presidential ticket. Otherwise, Professor Guber is a great and humorous lecturer. Her readings are relevant and interesting. But this class is not an easy A.
Amazing professor-- she really know what she's talking about and is clearly very passionate about it. Make sure to do the readings cuz the exams are mostly on them and also pay attention to key concepts in her class. Exams are essay based and the questions are vague but you're able to do what you want with them. Incredibly sweet and understanding.
Prof Guber seems to get a bad rap on here. POLS021 was fully online this semester due to Covid, and she handled it quite well. Guber is nice, respectful, and her lectures aren't boring. Only a few tests make up the grade, so as long you do the textbook readings and study for them you'll probably be fine. Overall I'd have her as a teacher again.
Professor Guber is a solid professor, but only grades you on a few essay based exams. She is very nice, but has a clear political bias and makes it known from day one. Do not hesitate to clarify her essay questions, as they are quite vague. Grades in a timely fashion, but does hand out A's. Lectures are engaging and don't forget to participate.
Guber was mean. She tried hard to make the online class interesting, which I appreciate, but she clearly has been going off the same content for years. I probably would have done better in this class if it was asynchronous. Tons of quizzes, a lot of which are memorization of facts that just dont matter. Guber made a miserable pre-rec even worse.
7 grades - 5 textbook quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final. If you are a bad test taker, slow reader, or slow note taker, good luck. Quizzes are 25 q's in 20 mins and Exams are based off lectures which she does not record. She only posts the slides which are 80% images. Extremely limited review material considering tests & quizzes make up 100% of grade.
No regard for her students well being. I was supposed to have temporary academic accommodations set up and she was the only professor I had who rudely refused to help. She posts her slides from each lecture but they are only unhelpful pictures, and she gets off on grading super hard. Also prep for more work than god because she loves long readings.
Doesn't accommodate students at all, only has quizzes and two exams and many slides that are hard to understand. Doesn't record lectures, and goes very by the book. Its 2021- people learn in different ways and not all of us went to Yale so many of us can't learn by reading hundreds of pages.
She's a passionate lecturer but had some weird rules, like lectures couldn't be recorded (which is so inaccessible for continuing ed students) and the grade was comprised of 2 tests worth 40% and 5 quizzes. She is interesting but not accommodating, grades were easy if you read everything and take VERY meticulous notes. Would recommend for a seminar
Honestly, this was one of the worst classes I've taken. The professor didn't care about the students at all. She lectured the entire class and it was super fast but she wouldn't record the lectures because she wanted participation; however, she talked the whole time and there was no participation. She literally read a script, Take a different class
A weirdly demanding amount of work for an entry level course. She's a solid engaging lecturer, but ur whole grade is tests and quizzes drawing on very specific details. However, pple shouldn't be mad she doesn't record her lectures cuz she has a right to make that choice. She seemed like a super nice lady and I'm sure the class is better in-person.
I think this professor thinks a lot of herself, and enjoys listening to herself speak. If you do not test well - do not take this class! Two exams and 5 quizzes are your only chances for grades. She twists questions on exams - so watch out! I read every word assigned and took meticulous notes - and still only managed to get a C. (normally honors)
I would rather grate my hand off than take a class with professor Guber again. In what world does any sane person make the final worth 45% of someone's grade. I have never been more irritated by a grading situation in all my years of school. I am a bad test-taker, never have been good at it. Before the final, my grade was a 91, afterward, a 69 >:(
Youd think a professor likes to see their students succeed but Im convinced shes praying on all our downfalls. She gives no room for leeway, no extra credit, no study guides for tests, lecture slides are basically all unhelpful pictures. Do not take this professors class shes not helpful in anyways and doesnt care about her students success.
Dr. Guber is amazing. Her lectures are super engaging and she has lots of funny stories. Homework for this class was usually a couple of articles and a chapter of the textbook. Only thing I didn't like is her grading scheme- 40% of your grade is the mid-term, 40% for the final, and 20% for Inquizitive. Not fair. The tests can be slimy so watch out.
Professor Guber is very sweet but an AMAZING lecturer. As someone uninterested in the political science field but couldnt find any other class to take, her lectures were genuinely interesting and I learned a ton. GO TO CLASS, the 2 exams make up 80% of the grade, and showing up made a huge difference:)
Deborah Guber may be the epitome of what you'd expect from a political science professor living in Vermont that studies environmental law, has written few papers, and has an ample love for the 2000 election and Ralph Nader. Definitely is a more liberal and will often word things in a particularly bothersome way. I found her to be unresponsive.
If you want to see a professor base her entire class on her ability to consistently trash trump for 50 minutes straight, buckle up because you hit a jackpot! Ladies and Gentlemen, this professor managed to connect the 1812 tariff of john quincy adams to how bad trump was and how conservatives are mentally defficient. Good Luck, thats all Imgonnasay
Professor Guber gives very passionate lectures but they can often be unrelated to test material, for example rambling about Trump. The grades in this class are also 70% based off of the midterm and final which is challenging if you're not a good test taker, especially since she's a tough grader. I would take again if the grading criteria was better
Look at all the other 1.0 comments they all sum up her worst problems! No accomidations,100% grade is 4 quizzes and the midterm and final. The worst prof I have ever encountered! Horrible teacher DO NOT TAKE if you have any difficulty with tests, learning differences ect. Without very very detailed notes and doing all the readings good luck!
Her tests are graded only on the readings, and there are a lot of readings.
Prof. Guber is such a good lecturer and I actually wanted to go to class to learn from her. The Inquizitive assignments are awful and tedious but the exams are based on lecture content only so it's fine.
Guber is a fantastic orator. Her presentations are engaging and professional, allowing for easy note-taking. She fully understands the topics she taught, and is always ready to elaborate. Most important is her sense of humor when approaching frustrating topics. I enjoyed the occasional swear and plenty of laughter at certain political absurdities.
Highly educated and intelligent, has engaging lectures and knows her stuff. That being said, she does not GAF about the success of her students. The exams are 35% of your grade each, and she doesnt post notes, videos or study guides. I found her to be rude and that her class was based off of soley beliefs and opinions, not the actual material.
She literally bragged to the class about tracing one of her previous students IP address from an email he sent her trying to get out of the midterm and finding his location to catch him in a lie. Such an invasion of privacy and also lowk illegal??
Professor Guber is a great lecturer, engaging and very knowledgable. It was definitely a more difficult course, but it challenged me in a good way to get out of my comfort zone. Definitely take good notes on the lectures and do the article readings to prepare for tests. Also, midterm is 30% of grade and final is another 30%, so beware of that.
Lectures are engaging in this class, but are more tailored towards current events rather than class material. I would enjoy this more if lecture material was consistent on exams, but its not. Plus, exams are graded harshly- I received a 71 despite rigorous studying. Prof. is not accomodating for absences either, which are recorded every class.
I like Dr. Guber she clearly knows the material inside and out and is willing to work with us to make sure you pass the class and get something out of it.
I will start by saying that I think that she is extremely smart and knowledgeable about the topics that she teaches. However, the class was 50 minutes of lecture and she is hard on attendance. She is also an incredibly harsh grader with the criteria not being very clear. She also will make you feel stupid if she does not find your question up to par
Her lectures were seriously so engaging and interesting! Definitely very knowledgeable and when you ask questions she's kind about it. The tests were fair (not hard like others in here said) just review the slides and articles she assigns and you'll be all set! I remembered a lot from class without having to take many notes
Prof. Guber was genuinely a treat to hear lecture. She is a fantastic speaker and could command a room. Always asked questions that made people think. Whether or not you will have a hard time in this class is up to whether or not you are a good test taker. Exams are about 80% of the grade. Heard from others she was sometimes tough in office hours.
Do not take this class by all means. This class is based completely off of tests and exams, which are extremely wordy and have a lot of traps. She literally does not want you to succeed, she makes it as difficult as possible. I was studying for hours at a time days before a QUIZ, and would receive a 70. She is rude and has no care for her students.
