She's new this year and she's awesome. It's a hard class but she tries to make it easy on you. I highly recommend her.
I had her for lab and she was alright. She was pretty helpful and not too difficult of a grader. I would recommend Ngassa for lecture!
she is an Ok lab prof. but grades hard on the labs and randomly marks you down on things that she never told you to include in your write up. Helpful in lab but grades hard
Awesome Prof! This is a hard class, but she tries to help students if they need it. Tests are straightforward and are just like problems from class and the book. I definitely recommend her!
Great professor! The class is difficult. Exams and quizes are straight from lecture notes and the book problems, but it's a good advantage to go to lecture all the time. She is always willing to help and encourages students to do their best.
this class is very difficult but she tries to help everyone to succeed. definitely go to lectures, discussions and don't miss a lab. get extra help or visit her in her office hours. she wants to see you succeed and pass organic chem.
Harder than hard. It's like she gets paid on how much material she can get through in one class period. If you don't buy the book you'll be lost forever. Find a new prof. if you can.
She is the best teacher and helps you learn the material. and she is pretty hot.
Awesome prof!!! If you have to take Chm 231 I would suggest taking her! She makes you work and think but is very helpful and you will benefit from having her!! Avoid Prof Richmond at all costs beacuse he is nothing but bad news. Prof Herrington is awesome
If you've heard that organic chemistry is difficult, Herrington won't disappoint you. But, she is very helpful, very articulate and a good teacher. KEEP UP WITH LECTURE!
Wow, Prof Herrington is the best prof I've ever had at GVSU. The course is not always easy, but she's determined to help everyone understand. Her knowledge of the topic is impressive, and she's very interesting- she'll keep your attention!
Prof Herrington is very clear and willing to help. Very genuine prof who wants students to do well. Go to lecture and keep up on the work.
Best lab prof so far (and that doesnt mean much) Helpful with labs if you understand the info. You lab reports will never be good enough.
Prof Herrington is the greatest teacher at GVSU. You will always know what to study, orgo is a tough subject, expect to study...ALOT!
she was very helpful but organic chem is tough
The material covered in class is hard, and you NEED to put the time into it. She will do all that she can to make sure that you do well....office hours will help even though she will make you feel like an idiot when you ask questions.
Goes REALLY fast. Starts every class with "We're gonna go really fast through the material today... sorry." Despite what people on here say... she is NOT willing to help. This is the only time this website has lied to me... GET OUT NOW!
I had one day in her class and could not understand anything she was saying. She expects all of her students to have a huge Chem background. She jumps into the subject too fast. Stick with Witucki, she eases students into it!!
VERY hard class but she is helpful when you go to office hours. Expect to study every night (book questions, read, etc.)otherwise you will be so lost.Lots of quizzes. This class is going to be hard no matter who you take it with but she does a good job!
Dr. Herrington is the best professor I've ever had. Orangic Chemistry is tough, but she is very willing to help you. She's very positive and motivates students.
This is a hard class, but she is a great instructor. She knows the material and is very concearned about how students are doing. She knew everyone's name in a class of 100+. Expect to study a lot and quizzes almost everyday.
Very hard to follow, continues her lectures into discussion, lots of quizes! So much writing in lecture that you can't think about what she just said. Unless you WANT to retake this class, don't take this prof.!
Goes over material VERY fast. SHe looses you in lec. Makes you fell dumb when you ask questions. Her discovery lecture is something very differnt from the regular lecture. Lots of quizzes. It's her first yr teaching here, so she's a little rusty.
hard class, lot of studying, hard to follow in lectures, lots of quizzes but tests aren't that bad
Dr. Herrington was always very helpful no matter what. Great lectures that used groups...group quizzes are the best! Had students do problems on white board for extra credit!!! Take her for sure
All CHM is going to be fast, it's not just her. She will explain everything, but never allows cheat sheets like some profs do. Just study like crazy!
Hard to follow in lecture, easy to get lost. Material moves very fast. Nice lady, very helpful but lots of quizzes. Tests arent bad. Online homework and group work helps you get points back. Not a bad class, but study and follow along.
Goes way to fast in lecture! Everything has to be done in 2-3 mins. Every other week you have a test. Seems more concerned about getting through lesson than going more at the students pace. Always has quizzes.
great teacher. i had her for lab and she really helped clear up any questions i had in lab or lecture. Gracious on some lab abstracts. i would highly recommend her for lab.
she goes WAY TOO FAST in lecture, and I think she let the PhD doctor thing get to her head. She's young and has a big ego. Instead of working with someone till tey get it, she won't even give them a chance. Goes too far into depth. Extra things makes me us even more confused. Dont choose her!!!!!
I had her for lab and she was great! It probably helped that I had Matchett for lecture and she's great too...but Dr. Herrington explained everything. Has very limited office hours, and does sometimes forget that we're not experts like her.
She went way to fast, this was an introductory chemistry course, and she flew right through everything. She was also not very accessible out of class, and i felt like it was a pain in the neck for her to meet with me one on oneout of class when i couldnt make her office hours. Take a different prof.
Teaches pretty quickly in lecture, but is always willing to answer questions and go over the steps to a problem. Gives a lot of practice during lecture so you can catch on easily. Also, with all of the points in the class, the final is barely worth 10%.
Really good prof. She likes to go fast, so do the homework problems she asigns and take good notes and you should do just fine
Moves quickly but very helpful, answers questions in detail, a lot of fun
I was very nervous about taking this class, but with her this class was one of my best. She does go fast but is always willing to help and she is very clear about grades and what is going to be on the tests and quizes.
This class was challenging, science does not come easy to me. However, I learned a lot. It's quick, but there is a lot to learn. She is organized; notes are clear and helpful. She can be intimidating, she has a little ego. GO TO OFFICE HRS TO GET HELP. She is more relaxed. Study. I got a B.
people had warned me she wasnt a good prof. I took her anyway. She is a little tough at first but toward the end you will be glad you had her. The final is not bad and she has structured notes to print off BB. aslo has reveiws before test . i would take her again. i got an A
Very easy class if you've had any chem in highschool. She assigns OWL homework, but it's easy. A lot of little piddly things to do, but they're all so easy that the class was a breaze for me since I had chem before. If you haven't had chem, it will be easy to learn it with her.
She's really nice and really wantes to help you out. A really great prof. there is alot you have to do for the class though
She will SCREW YOU OVER... DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! Terrible teacher, no people skills, does not teach you anything; you will end up teaching yourself. If you see her name on your schedule, SWITCH THE CLASS
She is horrible.... TESTs are IMPOSSIBLE.... She wants to do everything in her power to SCREW you over.. THIS CLASS WILL KILL YOUR GPA... GET a different Professor!!!!
very good prof. class participation is key. group quizzes are nice grade boosters. always very nice and helpful during office hours. one of the only profs i have not been afraid to go talk to
Rudest teacher I have ever had, very disrespectful. Very unhelpful, the only questions she will answer are ones straight from the book. Her answer to "I dont understand this" is "go read the book." I went to her office numerous times and left more confused, this class sucks, good luck.
Very disrespectful, will treat you like middle schoolers. She once threatened to not teach anymore as if that would help. Don't ask questions, she'll respond as if you haven't tried to participate in class and make you feel dumb
She's organized and presents a tough subject in a clear way. Study, ask good questions, don't tell your you are confused or "don't get it Tests are average, she works hard to put class together. But beware, she comes off rude, and condescending toward students. Be prepared for that.
Expectations were not clearly defined. Takes the entire semester to finally figure out what she wants. Will curve at the end so that grades are not as bad.
Organic chem is tough and Prof. Herrington doesn't help make it any easier. She totally blows you off if you don't understand something because she thinks that you're not trying hard enough if you don't understand a concept. Goes WAY to fast and doesn't slow down if you ask her to - she responds with "Read the book." GPA killer - RUN AWAY.
This class was tough but Herrington was well organized and was the best chem teacher I have ever had. If you work as hard as she does you will do fine.
The class isn't hard to grasp, but the amount of info is. All I can say is study every night for at least 2 hours and do all the labs and homework for points. They add up. Also she is one of the cutest teachers on campus.
The class is hard, but she makes it very understandable. You have to go to class EVERY day and actively participate in class in order to keep up with things. And when she says to study every night, she is not joking. Follow her advice on what to do for this class. She is a great teacher and knows exactly what she is doing.
Worst prof I have ever had! Her tests are impossible and she expects you to know everything she does that other classes didn't have to know. She helps in office hours, but she never goes over anyting there that is actually on test and quizes. Get out now!
As long as you dont sleep during lectures you will be able to understand the class really well.. but she does a lot of group quizzes so you have to make sure you make it to class all the time otherwise those points will add up and hurt you in the end..
Horrible teacher. She doesn't explain things well, and if you ask a question she just blows you off. Very moody and killer tests.
she teaches well in lecture, but when u try to get 1 on 1 help she doesn't, and i'm almost failing the class cuz i was sick n missed a lot, and she doesn't give me any leway to catch up or anything..... NOT GOOD
VERY knowledgable, not very approachable. i think b/c this is a 100 level class she gets frusterated when you don't understand right away. exams and quizzes are killers. i have never learned so much in a class before... but my grade does not reflect that very well. don't take as a gen. ed. or GPA booster, but if you want a challenge, have at it!
I HATED THIS TEACHER, don't take chem 109 if you have her. SHE SUCKS!
overall she is a good teacher, but her tests and quizzes are really hard. if you struggle with chemistry do not take her
Great professor!
Her exams are extremely hard and she sometimes makes you feel stupid for not understanding things the first time around. Do not take her if you can help it. She made my semester hell.
Her exams were much harder than you would expect them to be from lecture. Do what she says: do a little bit of chemistry every night. OWL and quizzes help bring up exam grades.
Dr. H will devote herself to helping you do well as long as you put forth the effort to understand it first. Real fun professor, doesn't lecture in monotone.
amazing professor. i took her 109 class then signed up again to take her organic chem class...she really has the student's best interest in mind and her one and only goal is to help you learn and understand Chemistry. if you study, go to class, go to discussion and participate you will do fine. great professor and i would highly recommend her.
Dr. H is a great professor. While chem always throws you loops, she is devoted to helping students understand. She has a form of guided notes you fill out at lectures so you know what is important, and you have a great study tool. Test/quizzes were not that bad, just all a matter of putting the time in to study. I dislike chem, but she made it fun.
she is a tough proffessor.
I did not like her at all, she was not clear with her directions and was very lazy
I love this professor!!! I dont like science at all, but I actually likes this class. I stuggled through it because I didnt try hard enough. You have to put effort in but that is just like any other class. She is more than willing to help you when you need it and she wants more than anything for you to understand chemistry. She is awesome!!!!
she is a very touch teacher. her tests and quizzes are very hard. u have a quiz every week in discussion. i think u should take stevens, she gives out extra credit and u can get some points back on the test. in herringtons class u get one extra credit assignment worth 1 percentage point. thats it. dont take her. shes really nice and helpful thou.
Dr. H was an amazing professor! Do not take her class, though if you are lazy or a procrastinator! Her exams require that you KNOW the material inside out. DO OWL! OWL can make or break you! I missed an A- because I skipped OWL a few times. Show up for class because group quizzes will boost grade as will participation. Make sure you've tried to un
Dr.H was awesome! I had her for intro chem and took her again for organic. She is extremely nice and helpful during lecture and during office hours- She wants her students to understand the material. Do the OWL homework, and study for the quiz each week in discussion...they help your grade a ton!!
She's a good prof and helpful.
She was a very tough teacher and this class is VERY HARD. A lot of people dropped the class early on, her exams are brutal (avg. 56%). DO NOT take her for CHM 116.
Very helpful. A lot of examples and always available during office hours. Tests are tough as nails, but if you actually study and do the problems from the text you'll do fine. Highly recommended!
Good prof, very nice, and she teaches well. Her tests are nearly impossible though. You think you know the material but she makes many twists and hard to catch things on the exam to easily screw it up. But she is a good lady, always willing to help in office hours and very nice to talk to.
Dr. H is a mixed bag. She has more mood swings than anyone I know of. She tries very hard for us to learn, gives us a lot of resources to help us. Her tests are almost impossible, you need to know everything. Need to attend every lecture and ask quesitons. I would recommend her with some reservations.
This is an EXTREAMLY hard class, and she knows what she is talking about but does not explain very well. If you dont study you wont pass. Her tests are WAY harder than you would expect so STUDY!! I studied forever for my exams and still struggled alot! GOOD LUCK
Nice teacher but hard class! Organic is a hard subject though. Owl (online homework) given only 4 attempts as compared to unlimited attempts in chm 109. quizzes and exams very difficult. She knows the material very well but hard to follow if you don't read ahead before lecture. Do not miss lecture. Random group quizzes.
Pretty hard to get a reading on. Labs almost never result in anything over 90% if you do an outstanding job. Tests are extremely difficult.
The best professor. Her class is easy if you take notes and participate. I hated chemistry and almost failed in high school. She taught me everything clearly and i got an A. Exams are tough but you really have to study. Homework is online and easy. The labs are fun and you can get easy points for those. She is willing to help you if you show effort
I love her! Best lab prof I have had. She explains things very well and grades fairly. Take her for lab if you can!
She is a very strict professor in how she grades and expects the best, always. She is very good at explaining things but is not very personable. When I went to her office hours she was not very talkative and made me feel like I was dumb. but she is all in all an okay professor
BEST chemistry professor! I hated chemistry until I took this course with her! She's awesome at explaining things to be easily understood. TAKE HER!
Dr. Herrington is a very nice professor who honestly wants students to do well. Senior Seminar is almost entirely dependent on the work YOU put in so its rather difficult to judge her preformance. But she is very nice, will help you if you ask, and is very willing to work with you!
Professor Herrington was a great chemistry professor. I definitely recommend her. She walks around the room while students work on problems and offers help during class. Her power points make sense and she teaches subjects in a number of different ways, which helps get a better overall understanding. She emails back quickly, which is helpful.
She writes outlines for the notes that you can print off before class and then you just have to fill in important information during lecture which is really helpful. Her lectures are good and she genuinely wants you to learn and understand the material. Her answers to questions are helpful. I would take her if you can. Tests can be tough though.
Dr. Herrington is very organized. She has skeleton notes that you print off and fill in during class. It is important to go to class because she gives group work and practice problems that are pretty close to what is on the exams and they are usually graded. She is very approachable and happy to answer questions!
She was good at teaching the material, except for the fact that her lectures were clear cut from the textbooks down to the examples. She encouraged group work and shattered a rubber ball in class though, so she can be entertaining.
Went many times for help, understood the material not enough time on exams for what she expected. Trick questions. Many students have difficulty finishing her assessments on time. Told me tough luck. I ended up dropping the class. I would not take her, not lenient, no extra credit, quiz, every week, lots of homework, extremely difficult questions.
Gives skeleton notes for lectures so that you know exactly what you need to know. Practice problems in class will help you for the test. Weekly WebAssign homework worth 10 points every time. Tests are hard, but gives practice tests before and has a PASS tutor to give practice tests and study sessions before the test.
Professor Herrington is my all time favorite chemistry teacher. She provides excellent skeleton notes, she gives really easy to understand real life examples for things. Also, she gives you a lot of opportunities to test you knowledge which also means lots of easy point opportunities. She actually cares about her students and being a great teacher!
AMAZING TEACHER! She had skeleton notes for every unit and gave the answers in person during her lectures so attendance is a must. If you are thinking about taking her DO IT!! One of the best teachers I've had at Grand Valley.
Dr. Herrington is an AMAZING professor! Her lectures include skeleton notes which were super helpful. If you attend class, take notes, read the material, and do the homework, you will find this class a breeze!
Awesome professor. Explains concepts in different ways to make sure you get it. As long as you go to class and do the homework, you should have no trouble doing good.
She was a great professor for the class, she made the material make sense to the non-chemistry minds in the class, like me. Chemistry is not my strong-point but I did just fine.
Only had 3 tests over the course of the semester and the earliest I ever saw anyone get done was 45 minutes. Make sure you have a PASS in the class, one of the reasons I got the grade I did. She is a great lecturer and knows what she is talking about!
Deborah Herrington is one of the most engaging and selfless professors I've ever been lucky enough to have in my three years of being a student here. Her exams are are not a cake walk, but you'll gain so much from her class. She will stop at nothing to make sure you understand the topics and she recognizes the effort you devote.
Dr. Herrington wants you to do well and gives you everything to do so. She is very kind and helpful. Would without a doubt take her again!
Although I struggled in the class, she met with me outside office hours to go over exams or any questions I had. Her tests are pretty hard but if you study pretty well you should do well. CHM 115 is a difficult class but she posts notes ahead of time for you to fill out during class. Also, she makes groups for you to sit with during the whole class
I struggled through her class, however she really cares enough to learn everyone's name in a lecture of 100. She sets you up in group so that really helps if you have any questions during the lecture because she goes really fast. She gives you example problems after every topic and will walk around and help anyone who is struggling. Tests are HARD.
Dr. Herrington is the best. She truly cares about her students. She helped me understand a very difficult research article. You can tell she loves what she does. She is so knowledgable and did a great job with an online class!!!!
This was a very tough class, but she was very good with giving additional resources and showing where to read in the textbook, which helped A LOT. She did a very good job teaching this class considering the circumstances, and she never made me feel uncomfortable when I had a question. Showing up to class is essential to passing!!
Dr. Herrington is great. She takes the time to get to know her students and will go out of her way to help them succeed. CHM115 isn't an easy class, but she makes it very interesting and has a lot of unique in-class activities to make it more fun. I never used the textbook, but she gives optional practice problems if you need them.
I liked her a lot. In lab, shes not afraid to come up to you and literally walk you through the lab step by step. LabFlow sucks but she is definitely aware of that and makes exeptions. Shes a cool person too. Id reccomend her.
Give this lady a pay raise. I got to know her as my lab class was small. She is a department chair, an amazing teacher, and cares so much. You could tell the pandemic brought so much stress on her with changing formatting for learning in chemistry. It never affected her ability to teach or be present for her students. She was amazing, 11/10.
She's okay, you'll be fine if you have her. She just isn't an amazing teacher. She could work on being more clear on why she takes off points on tests, give less homework, and make sure her answer keys are correct for practice tests. That last one is very frustrating.
Herrington is a great and caring professor. Obviously you have to put in the work to pass and do well but she shows that she will help because she wants you to pass.
She was my Lab professor. She is really supportive, prepares slides and helps a lot to students. She replies fast to emails and explains clearly everything. Highly recommend to take her class!
Dr. Herrington was an extremely nice professor and you could tell she cared that her students understood the material. However, since this is a chemistry class you have to do a lot of the learning on your own. Herrington's tests are pretty difficult in my opinion and she can be pretty nit picky with her grading. However, she is open to discussion.
Dr. Herrington was an amazing professor. I am not a morning person, but I ended up taking her 8:30 am session and never once dreaded getting up to come to her class. There is a lot of homework, but it really helps you learn the material. Definitely take her as a professor if you can.
The content of her pre-class activities and in-class lectures are really important in succeeding in the class. There is quite a bit of work that goes into the class, but she is very thorough and provides a lot of resources to help students succeed and understand the content. She is a very kind person and willing to help her students.
The preclass activities are really useful and she provides really good resources for the content learned in class. She explained concepts really well and took the time to break down and walk through the concepts so students knew what she was talking about. She seems to put a lot of thought into her lectures so students understand. Highly recommend.
I took her one credit class on research. It wasn't hard, but it still taught me a lot about the resources available on campus to me. Professor Herrington is super helpful and easy to reach out to. I would highly recommend any science major to take sci280 or any of her classes
Professor Herrington is dedicated and makes an effort to support students. While the course is challenging, she provides useful resources like pre-class activities and study groups. Attending class is crucial, and tools like unstuck study can complement the textbook for effective study prep.
