moody, monotonous, put me to sleep
she gives you study guides but they're pretty vague. tests are pretty tough. but if you study the book and go to lecture you'll be fine. a lot of what she tests you on is from lecture. but her lectures are pretty boring.
she is a horrible teacher. Her study guides suck they make no sense. not helpfull at all. she does her whole lecture in powerpoint and she can barely read..
really hard class! study guides aren't helpful, powerpoints go to fast. Unless you need this class, don't take it. Way too much information crammed in one semester. Won't tell you what to study so don't bother asking...
study guides does not help at all, don't even try going thru it. to ace the test, you pretty much have to memorize the whole book to secure yourself a good grade. lectures are based on powerpoints, very boring : /
I initially registered for Lally's 141 class, but during the semester, Merritt took over. She doesn't care whether or not students pass her class, she's passive and just goes through the motions. Her study guides don't help at all. Thanks to her, I get to take PHYL 141 and 141L all over again!
I really did not like this teacher. She was confusing, often coming to class and telling us something she said the lecture before was incorrect and quickly trying to gloss over the correction. Her lectures are BORING and JUMP around. Must know the whole

Fahkin class is hard! information too vast. Lecture too long and monotone, all on powerpoint. study guide useless. Books for the class are a **** too, close to $300 just for this class.
she needs to step up her game -- her style of teaching is horrible.

she is the worst professor i've ever had. lectures are all over the place, boring, long, and her tests are ridiculous
Boring, DO NOT TAKE HER!! All her exams are out of this WORLD. Take my word for it, Einstein cant pass her test! If you are gonna take it, BE PREPARED. she is boring, talks slow. and lectures drag
she really goes out of her way to help you unlike a lot of the other condescending professors i have had
The worst class ever. Work hard for a C at best! Tests are SO hard. I recorded every lecture and typed them out in her powerpoints and read book but still got C's. She is from another planet and most grad students say this is the hardest class they ever took. Go to class cuz tests are from lectures but good luck staying awake!
VERY HARD. One of the hardest classes you will ever take as an undergrad. However, she is a great professor
She's boring and you will fall asleep because of the way she speaks. She spends way too much time on "her lectures" by going through every little detail there is. Her tests is what makes this class hard. In order to do good, you most likely need to know everything.
She is a great teacher. DONT buy the text book. I got an A in the course and I bought the book NEVER used it and it's a very expensive book! But her powerpoints are straightforward. class can get boring but as long as you know the ins and outs of the powerpoints you'll do great. She also curves and has a lower grade scale
Awful teacher. The worst I've had at U.H. Manoa. Terrible lectures that will put you to sleep. Takes questions from the MCAT to try and weed out the non pre med students. Tests are ridiculously hard and don't match the level of her lectures. Work the hardest you've ever worked just to get a C.
I've heard my share of horror stories about Dr. Merritt, but if you're willing to work hard in her class (I won't lie; this is one of the more intense courses to take, next to O-chem), she's the sweetest lady who'll take the time to review lecture materials and answer your questions until you truly understand. But it all has to start with you.
I studied really hard for this class but got an average grade. Although she gives ten minute breaks in between her lectures, the class is really long. I think it should be worth more than 4 credits. Exams are ridiculously long and DIFFICULT!! Only gave a glimpse of a study guide for the first exam. Don't expect study guides for the other exams.
Why the heck is everyone rating her so terrible for? Yes she can be monotone, but this is college, no wonder Hawaii ranks low compared to the states. Stop being lazy and study everything. That's what the class is for right? Not to get babied with easy tests. First read the book before class, then transcribe her lectures.Dont stop until you know it
This class isn't easy. But science isn't if you're trying to be decent at it. If you're a science major this is a good class to test your seriousness, to determine if you really want to work hard and get smart. Be enthusiastic about it. Bring a recorder! You cannot do good without recording her lectures I promise you this!
Dr Merrit is just doing her job. My grade (B)and the course was worth 5 credits. Her class is not mandatory I skipped ten lectures, but printed out all the chapters from laulima and read the chapters at home. Good memorization will get you that A grade.
Exams are really intense. What helped me was to read over the material before class, record her lectures, and write my own notes based on her power points. I was learning the material by going over it again and again but by different means (visual, audio, writing it out).
Her test are extremely difficult, in fact it was WAY more harder than the MCATS; and was the most intense I ever taken in my life! Getting a C in her class is quite easy; if you want the A you must be prepared to go beyond what you ever done before. After her class, you will find yourself studying w/ super human memory and study skills!! CheeHoo!
Lots of material to remember. 7 exams, but gives lots of ex. cr. for exams. Nice & helpful professor. Wasn't my fav. class cuz it was at 8:30 a.m. but she's funny and knowledgable which made lecture interesting =)
Dr Merritt really knows her stuff! You don't necessarily need to buy the uber-expensive books because her tests are right off her powerpoints which she posts online. DO go to class and pay good attention and take notes on each powerpoint slide. Then just study those for the exams. Also, DONT PROCRASTINATE STUDYING FOR EXAMS! Your grade will thank u
Dr. Merritt definitely knows her stuff. Her lectures can be a bit boring at times but if you want to do well in the class definitely attend the lectures and don't procrastinate when it comes to studying. If you just want to get a C then all you need is a 50%. Exams are very hard though.
She is a boring lecturer. The only thing people get out of her class is sleep. She expects you to know everything for her exams. There are no study guides or clues to what is on the exams. It is rather ridiculous. It is impossible to succeed in this class. DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE!
Her lectures are boring, but extremely knowledgeable & sometimes funny. 8 exams, but 8th is not required. Make sure to memorize EVERYTHING on the powerpoints with HEAVY emphasis on the pictures. But she has a somewhat low curve. I recommend buying the book (any version, old/new) because power-points are sometimes disjointed. Lots of extra credit q
Lectures are boring because there is a lot of material that needs to be covered. If you want an A then you need to read the book. If you are fine with a B or C then just study the powerpoints w/ emphasis on the pictures. She is very knowledgeable so do not be afraid to ask questions (it will also help awaken the class). Overall its a tough class
I took Phyl 301 last semester and am taking 302 now with Dr. Merritt. She is an incredibly smart, brilliant, and helpful teacher! And because of this, plus the mass amount of info that is in human anatomy/physiology, the tests are REALLY DIFFICULT/TRICKY. Go to lectures! Powerpoints are necessary. Study everything and you can get an A.
I took 301 and 302 with her. She definitely knows her stuff. Although lecture can be boring, and you may sleep in a few, it's best to go and record them. She talks fast on topics she loves, and it's hard to take down all she says. Make sure to study the lecture slides, and pictures/tables in the texts. Her curve is very generous.
even though everyone is saying its impossible to succeed in this class, if you dedicate time to study, and are curious about human anat and phyl, you will get at least a B :] professor is sweet and funnut her lectures are long. her exams are purely trick questions so you literally need to know everything. i loved this class
Very difficult class, we made study groups with my friends in class and all of us would fail almost everytime no matter how much time we put into studying. Also we don't know where she gets her test questions from, cus its not lecture or the book. Her tests are just ridiculous. DO NOT RECOMEND!
Yes, this class is epically hard, but I didn't have the textbooks (highway robbery), I barely studied, and somehow got away with a C (her curve is extremely generous). Passing is easy, getting an A/B would be the hard part.
Don't afraid of getting a bad grade at first. She loves people who shows consistent improvement in their grade throughout the semester. Every beginning of semester, she'll say "you should not take over 12 credits if you are taking this class" . Anyways she is such a wonderful professor and i didnt once regret taking her class. Awesome experience :)
Hardest class ever. She does not care if you fail the course even though how much you put effort into studying which is heartless. Worked really hard and end with a C nearly passing. Need good memorization.
Simply just don't take PHYL 103 with Deborah Merritt. She has trick questions throughout test. If you get a 55% it equals a C. This sounds great, but when you read and study for NUMEROUS hours (most I've ever had to study for a class so far), and still don't know how to answer all of her trick questions, it is really discouraging. Ended up with a C
this class was by far the hardest class i have ever taken. i know you have to study for all classes but for her class you should start studying like a month in advance. her exams aint a joke. people need to stop being mean she has her PHD and is very smart, it was a good experience taking her class i can say that.
This is a very difficult class. Don't expect to get an A with just reading, you have to basically dissect the book and read her mind. I think she is one of the few professors who does not care whether you pass or not.She is very rude and does not know it. She knows the material because she taught the same thing numerous times.
Hard class. its Phyl141&142 combined. you really need to understand & know everything! Her Lab is real easy A though. Lecture is boring, slides are always up on laulima, BUT I recommend to go to lecture. if u jst study slides you cant score higher than a C. getting a C+ aint gon cut it if ur into DH/Nursing. STUDY! Best part: Grades are Curved.
Dr. Merritt is a great teacher. She is nice and is always willing to help her students. Her class is very difficult though! Exams are multiple choice, but the questions and choices are extremely detailed. The curve is extremely generous though. You only need a 50% to pass her class, but you'll need to study very hard for an A or B. I got a B-.
I dreaded going to this class! Her lectures are very boring. Her monotone voice could put me to sleep within the first 10 minutes. She doesn't explain concepts very well. And when I would ask her for help, she would tell me to look it up in the textbook. Very unhelpful! On the bright side, her lab class is an easy A!
Dr Merritt is one of my favorite professors. She knows it's a hard corse and she makes the test even harder! BUT she is always available by appointment, and if you are a diligent student she will recognize that, and will help you study for the test... I would recommend you study the slides, esp EVERY table and graph she gives.
WORST TEACHER EVER! She has a curve but that doesn't even matter. She is confusing and her tests are the worst. You spend the majority of the test trying to understand what the question even says. If you can take this class anywhere else and transfer it, that is highly recommended!!
No syllabus, no up front due dates/test dates, no grading criteria. Assigned 6-11pg things <24 hrs before they were due. If not done perfect, NO credit received, but never gave assignments back. Belittled students in class. Expected us to read 30 chapters, only finished 10 because of her, yet we get an incomplete til we finish the rest on own time.
HARD COURSE. Condescending when talking to people. She acts like we have background in it when it was my FIRST PHYL CLASS. Pay attention to pictures for tests. DONT BELIEVE WHEN SHE SAYS SOMETHING ISNT IMPORTANT, IT WILL BE ON THE TEST. She accused people of cheating and gave them ZEROS just because 5 wrong answers matched. AVOID this course.
For the love of God, don't believe anyone who says she is a good professor. I've definitely learned a lot in her class, but not because of her. She does not teach and she does not fairly assess students subject knowledge. Absurd amount of effort expected for an undergraduate class. Highly do not recommend.
You're better off avoiding this course if at all possible. If you're interested in learning about physiology and anatomy, check out the 141/142 class instead. This class, for an introductory 100 level class, was ridiculously hard. She means well but she does not teach well. Avoid if at all possible.
Terrible professor. Extremely paranoid about cheating. She gave unfair zeros to multiple students. I suggest not taking a class from her until you have to.
Where do I start...Merritt is absolutely brutal. Her questions on the tests are the hardest I've ever see, let a lone had to answer. Expect to spend hours and hours studying if you want to even get a 50% on her tests (that is average score). Avoid unless absolutely have to! Not good about responding to emails either. Completely confusing in class 2
Avoid this class by ALL means. This was by far the most miserable class I've taken in my entire class. Initially I thought this class would be interesting but her tests, lectures and her overall ruined everything for me. She does not care about her students.
She is one sided and will not change her ways for her students at all. There are no study guides to help you on the test. I've studied all night for her tests and still failed every one. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. It will mess up your semester, GPA, and will bring you unnecessary stress. Take it ANYWHERE ELSE. The mean of the class were F's.
The hardest class I have ever taken. No matter how much you study, you will fail her tests. BUT all you need is 50% overall to pass. This class will make you stress out. But once you DO pass (which you probably will, if you tried and went to class) then it feels amazing and any class you take after that is a piece of cake. Do the extra credit!
This is the Hardest class you will ever take in your LIFE!! She isn't mean, she is just a little impractical. You will fail the first and probably the second, third, and fourth test. Their are no study guides, or past test to study from. If you have to take this class good luck, if not don't take it!
The best advice I can give u is to be prepared. Load up ur knowledge with biol, chem, kines, etc prior to taking this class. Be prepared that this course takes a lot of ur time if u want to do well. Go to class as she will talk about slides that won't b posted and asked in exams. For few that reads & studies, you will get B, 10/300 students, A. gL
Super paranoid about cheating. 5 identical wrong answers equals a 0 on exams. Throws stuff not covered on her exams. The saddest excuse of a professor.
Be prepared for her exams are extremely tricky and hard. Some extra credit questions will be cover in class so pay attention in class. Do the Right Brain project. It helps my grade a lot.
The grades are based on 4 exams, and they are very difficult!! Study everything (i.e. read the books, review lecture notes obtained from lecture, and listen to the lectures many times)!! As for personality, she is nice, but I would not recommend getting a letter of recommendation from her as it may dilute your chances getting into graduate school.
More interested in designing difficult exams instead of testinf what she actually covers in class. Boring and loves her bad reputation. If you feel inspires to learn avoid this class. She is extremely detailed but will never provide study guides or help you to focus on exaxtly what we need to know for exams. The only professor who teaches this.
Exams are tough, most stay up studying for days and still fail. Unless you want to waste your time doing the extra credit assignment do not take this class. Also, she believes her tests are fair, its the students that are failures. Her exams are tricky and difficult. Avoid this class if you can.
She stands there and rambles for 2 hours. Tells you that you wont pass if you are taking more than 13 credits.. Um the average student takes 15 credits a semester. Very inconsiderate to that fact that this is new information. Harder than the MCAT.
Hardest class I have ever taken! Teacher is awful. Laughs at students when try answer questions incorrectly in class. She takes joy in failing people. Do not take this class, change your major if you still can. Don't buy the text book you can get the download for the computer for free. Not worth the $350
Physiology is a touch subject, there's no way getting around it other than studying and understanding the concepts. Dr. Merritt is a fair professor. Her exams are hard and a bit tricky but she does have extra credits at the end of every exam which helps your score significantly.
No study guides. If you buy the textbook, use the study guides at the end of the chapters. If all else, study pictures and diagrams!! Most of her exam questions are based on pictures. Really hard class, even though I understood the concept, it didn't translate too well on my exam score because her exams are hard....
After reading all the rates before I took this class, I was petrified. But Dr. Merritt wasn't even half as bad as I thought she would be. She is very fair & nice, & yes, her lectures are long, but all you really need to do to get at least a B is study the PP slides. STUDY & MEMORIZE THE PICTURES! I cannot stress that enough.
Class is hard but not impossible. DO: show up to class, listen, record lectures, read books. Talk to her after exams to see what you got wrong too! I had to transfer after one semester with Merritt, but 302 put me ahead of the students in my new program who are at the same level. It is hard, but you learn a lot. I am glad I took this class.
You will learn a lot of useful information for your future career, if you put in the work! Keys: Don't just aim for a good grade, aim to learn! Attend lectures & pay attention! Use your lab time wisely to connect what you have learned in lecture to the models! Go to office hours and ask questions (She's really nice)! Don't be afraid of the class!
She is very knowledgeable but it's just so much information (about one chapter per class). Hard to follow her lectures unless you have prior knowledge about anatomy
She knows what she's talking about. But she doesn't know how to teach it to us. She just blurts out info and goes on and on. But she doesn't know exactly how to teach it to us.
The only thing being graded is your exam grades. You take roughly 5 or so exams. Each exam covers at least 5 chapters that all have over 20+ pages per chapter. I recommend taking this class during your least hectic semester so you can focus all of your attention to it. Honestly, if I wasn't already half way through the semester I'd drop this class.
Human Anatomy will always be a difficult course, but her teaching methods are for her benefit, not the students, so its 10x harder to learn the information needed to pass. She does not give out study guides, no quizzes or in-class assignments to help learn the material, just exams alone make up your ENTIRE COURSE GRADE. Don't recommend this course.
After taking the class, I can see why people would think the course is difficult. At the same time, it really isn't. Read the chapters and listen to the lectures on a recording or in class. Be consistent with your studies and an A is very much achievable. She tells you what to focus on in lecture. Test-only base grade but she gives extra credit.
You're gonna need to dedicate a lot of time and effort, but you will learn a lot. Record lectures, PAY ATTENTION (she will stress the key points verbally or on the chalkboard), read the textbooks, and STUDY! She's a lot more helpful when you ask her questions during office hours. 4 MC exams (70 Qs each, non-cummulative) and do the EC essays!
First, the instruction received is not worth the thousands I spent to take this class. Second, the instruction level and the multiple books required for this course will not prepare you for the exam. Third, the exams are unfair since they can have more than one correct answer. Fourth, the exams will have material not in the book or PowerPoint.
Unless you're looking for a way to lower your GPA don't take this class. Professor does not care if you fail. Even if you attend her lectures, you won't understand a single thing as she mumbles a lot. Sat in the front and could not understand a single word. Her exams are extremely hard, even if you convert the book to memory you still will not pass
your entire grade is made up of four tests each lecture she gets through a chapter but expects you to go over powerpoint slides that are 150-200 slides each doesnt give out a study guide and tests are best answer questions so most of the time all of the anwers are right i barely passed her class and i only did because she curves so heavy. dont take
Take this class during your "easiest" semester. I made this mistake last semester. I took this class along with 5 other classes and it was a hell of semester. I spent a lot of hours studying for this class and my test scores were average. Don't be stubborn like me and make the same mistake ;) I passed the class, but I had to work hard for it.
The hardest class I have ever taken at UH. I passed required science classes (including upper division classes) with only As, but this. She is such a sweet lady to talk to, but not the greatest lecturer. Be ready to read, though you still won't pass. Exams are very hard and include things that weren't covered in the class.
Took her summer 19. Tbh shes not a tough grader her exams are just tricky. You really need to know the material all around in order to get it right (loves the answer all of the above). Shes so sweet and wants to help you pass but only if YOU PUT IN THE WORK. Extra credit project or essays worth about 5% on total grade so dont skip out on it!!
I failed the first 2 exams, the 3rd one I barely passed, but for my final I aced it. Reading the textbook REALLY helped. She uses the same diagrams from the book on the exams, so that's a huge tip. I struggled af but I managed to go from a D+ to a B- in my final grade. This class is straight memorization rip to u if u take it.
She does not take the time of day to respond to emails. So if you have something important to tell her, make it in person. She is not tech savvy. Her exams do NOT correspond to anything that she teaches and accuses students of lying if the exam gets lost or messed up. Save yourself from a bad grade. Studying can't save you.
Extremely difficult class with unreasonable test questions. Her lectures are long and she often gets disconnected from Zoom, leaving students waiting in the silent Zoom session for sometimes an hour plus. Grade is purely based on 3 midterms and 1 final, with extra credit offered with each test. Worst class taken at UH.
Dr. Merritt's Phyl 301 & 302 class is a rigorous class, but I don't think it is as hard as everyone makes it out to be. A&P, especially the upper division level, is hard regardless of which college you take it at. The course has a lot of material, but so will whatever graduate program you go into. Merritt does a good job of preparing you for it.
The labs for Phyl 301 and 302 are a great supplement for the lectures. The lab itself is an easy class and the questions she uses for the quizzes, midterms, and final are not tricky. Taking it along with the lecture allows for increased reinforcement of material and helped me on the midterms and finals for the lecture as well.
In her class right now. find another teacher.
Literally the worst Professor to exist. Exams are extremely hard and its like she wants her students to fail. The most boring lectures with her just reading the sides for 2 hours!!!! The worst 2 hours of my life. Never take this class. I would give Professor Merritt 0/5 if I could.
Terrible Professor. Boring lectures and doesn't know how to teach the material to students. This is a self taught class. You are better off reading the powerpoint slides and textbook on your own. She is no help. The tests are unreasonable. Take this class if you want to ruin you GPA. Very boring professor. Cant believe I paid for this class.
Dr. Merritt just understands the anatomy/physiology for herself, but does not know how to relay the information to students. As she lectures it seems as though she is saying the information to herself for her own understanding and does not present it in a digestible way for her students. It is the norm to get Cs and Ds in her class.
Lectures were so bad. Stopped attending, had higher exam scores than those who attended. Read the textbook like the Bible. She sent emails via a personal email address, I didn't realize and accidentally used it once and she got angry and was VERY disrespectful towards me. I wrote a letter and reported her to her department chair. Too bad for tenure
she only lectures but gets off track easily. only graded by a few exams that cover multiple chapters.
Her tests are very difficult, study her slides inside and out. I never read the book once and got A+ for all the tests. I can't stress this enough make sure you do the extra credit!!
I've never written a negative review since, to be honest, it's on you. But this class made my head spin in ways I never imagined. First and foremost, be prepared to be completely perplexed as to whatever chapter you are in and which textbook you are meant to be reading. She uses two. It's been the most stressful time of my life. 0/5 if I could.
Your grade relies on exams only, and her exams did not feel like an intro anatomy class. I only found a good way to study for her exam by the last 2 exams. Focus a lot on the images in the textbook! Most of her questions are fill in the blank based on the images. Does curve generously but the class average grade was probably a D, so it didn't help.
took merritt for phyl301 as a bio major. tests are impossible, i would start studying over a month in advance and still could barely pull my weight. you need to memorize every minute detail, as exam format is all multiple choice "select the false statement" questions. if youre a bio major youre better off taking any the zoology course.
Some of the slowest lectures you'll ever go to. She doesn't really communicate what you did wrong in the lab section. If you take her, make sure you go beyond any study guide she gives you because a lot will catch you by surprise.
Teaching style is heavy on reading by yourself and poor lectures where she annotates slides while mumbling about certain aspects she thinks is important. Tests are long, confusing in wording and setup and your only grades. Consistently behind lecture schedule.
