Professor is tough so be prepared to work hard! Keep up with the class and you will learn alot. Consistent study a must...you can not slide in this class.
She is VERY monitone! And not exciting at all. Too bad she's the only teacher at folsom, I would recomment going to ARC but don't get VanElls there!!
Horrible boring ruined my day, if you want to take a class with same dificulty but a lot more interesting try Dr.Lam. otherwise good luck on the text book exams
She is very hard at grading. Even if you think you did well she fails you... I recommend a different teacher unless you want to catch up on your sleep :p

Very difficult teacher! Very monotone! Very dull in her classes. A doozer!!! Dont take this teacher
One of the best instructors I have ever had. Not an easy course, she doesn't teach you a string of dates. She teaches the SIGNIFICANCE of events and a different perspective on them. Especially recommend CA or Women's Hist.

I agree with the devil woman comment. She is extremely difficult to please and it seems no one can possible do well to her. She knows a lot about the subject but doesn't seem to care. Those who actually stayed with the class have received terrible grades from her.
Such a traumatic class experience I think I developed an allergy to history. :p
Moreno is a great teacher, she knows her history and she keeps you constantly analyzing what you're learning about. She is very easy to listen to, she has a kind of lulling voice. Keep up the reading and study and you'll do fine.
This teacher is very opinionated (read "political") when it comes to her classes. She does not seem to care if a student puts in a lot of effort and has an overall attitude of contempt for people who disagree with her viewpoint.
this teacher was horrible. i don't usually like to bash on a teacher but i feel that students deserve a fair warning. i found that she was not friendly or helpful. i'm a history major and i would never enroll in any of her classes again. BE WARNED!
I would recommend picking another professor she know what she is talkng about and is very smart but some people jsut shouldn't teach!
I had to drop out of her class. She was not a very caring teacher and it was a very difficult clas. Not recommended if you have a full class load.
BORING!
horrible. tests are nothing what she teaches. very unhelpful.
Moreno is a very challenging teacher. She knows her topics and is passionate about she teaches. She does not grade on a curve and she makes you work for your grade, but when you leave, you know your history.
DID NOT LIKE HER TEACHING, AND I WISH I HADN'T TAKEN THE CLASS WITH HER.
I would definitely not recommend this teacher... the lectures are boring, she doesn't test on ANYTHING that she lectures about and your grade is based mostly on the tests. I think the average score on the last test was a low C.
Terrible. Do not take her. lectures will put you to sleep, does not test on anything she teaches. I loved history before her, now I dread it.
Worst History Teacher ever. Pretty much every student dropped out because she is impossible. Throws useless handouts at you constantly and teaches absolutely NOTHING. I took Dr. Lam and learned a ton.
I have always liked history, but she makes it so boring! Her lectures are too long and she makes you write these journals that are beyond difficult to get a good grade on. She always looked angry... not good. A lot of people dropped
I agree with all of the prevoius posts. She is a very boring teacher, and she dosen't test on anything that she lectures about. Everyone in the class was either failing or had dropped out of the class by the time I decied to.
Very rude and demeaning
She is the easiest teacher to pass her class. As long as you dont expect that you are going to get lectured in the class. It is hard to get anything above a C. As long as you do your reading you can pass the class no problem. Too bad you cannot only show up on test days.
NOT AT ALL GOOD. You need to READ all the book to get a c
Every lecture was like listening to a good story, but beware...she goes fast with a lot on info. Sharpen your pencil and enjoy the story. I got an easy B
Moreno is an evil ****. If take pride in your GPA, this is not the teacher for you. She treats a GE class as a upper divison course. Her tests rarely reflect what ever she covers in Lecutre and her tests are aweful. She makes history even worse than it already is. If your an A student, its not likely you will score a high grade in her course.
She's one of the worst professor's I've ever had. She's disorganized, and she doesn't know how to shut up during the midterm. She gives you a bunch of useless information and you never know what you're going to be tested on.
I got the second best grade in class with an 85%. 70% of our class dropped. She congratulated me on my final research paper, and I only got a 90% on it (I think I had the best in the class, too). Pretty bad if you ask me.
HORRIBLE!!! GAH. Shes like one of thoes teachers that wants you to fail. By the end of the semester about 3/4 of the class had dropped....
When I took her class I has just graduated from HS. At the time I LOVED history. The class was SO BAD! She is very liberal and odd. Due to a crazy unfair grade, I had to drop the class and take a W (as did most of the class)... I have not wanted to study history since. If you want to learn, be treated with respect and get a GPA... DONT TAKE MORENO!
Lame! Very monotone and totally unexciting lectures. She may have passion for history however students will never see it. Quizzes and tests are very deceiving. If you are not excited about taking history avoid Moreno at all costs....save yourself from hell.
i took the women in american ihistory class with her. it was sooo bed that we only had like 10 people by the time the final came around, and im pretty sure most didnt pass. she is horrible, she has no personality and doesnt explain clearly!! save your time and enjoy your life....choose another prof!!!!
I enjoyed the material and the lectures. It was a challenging class but I learned a lot. You have to put effort in to do well, but it's worth it.
Muddy and disorganized lectures. Patronizing and a tad bit arrogant. (get the jist) She may be really knowledgeable but you would never know by how she holds lecture. Piece of advice for Moreno: take a class with Stephen Young on MicroInequities: The Power of Small - sometimes it's the teacher not the student.
I thoght a lot of her remarks were condescending as well, a lot of people felt she talked to them like little kids. Lots of videos, lots of reading.
If you enjoy history, a good GPA, or tests that cover anything rationally mentioned in class... then DO NOT take this teacher! She has to make a 60%-80% a C just to let most of the class pass the course! Even then, there is about a 50% dropout rate. AVOID.
Please, please do not take this class! It is a class that no one has ever gotten an A in. If you don't mind feeling like your back in High school and being humiliated and getting a D then by all means go for it. My class started off with 35 students now there are only 11 left. I wish I had switched to Lam in the beginning of the semester!
Not really a teacher. She shows mostly bad videos and her exams are extemely difficult and on very small details that are not disscussed in class
Do not under any circumstances take tis teacher!!! You will read tons, write tons, and learn very little during your in class time. I am a 4.0 student, and barely escaped the retched laws of her insanity, good luck with your life if you enter her domain.
Horrible teacher! Very unhappy, hard grader... tests extremely hard. You have to be able to devote your entire life to this class in order to pass with a C!! Never take this class.
exactly what everyone else said...
worst teacher ever, **** and will fail you. avoid! abstact questions for 10 question quizes that are worth more than 6 page paper. Worst teacher ever!
I want to drop but im stuck
This is one person that should be put behind a very small desk in a very small cubical with no human contact at all. I highly recomend that this teacher be avoided at all costs. You will regret taking her class if you do.
golf class was a better use of my time than this class
If you do your work, do the reading, and come to class you won't have much of a problem. This was a really awesome class with a teacher who truely loves history. I loved the class. I learned a ton. I will take more classes from her.
She's a feminist and lets everyone know it by her biased teaching. She plays a lot of videos that you just have to sit through. She's not very approachable- seems irritated and smug through the whole class. I dropped before the semester ended because I was too bored and offended by what she was teaching.
Very tough class. If you want to get a decent grade I recommend taking another professor. Very biased teaching and her notes are pretty much useless. Interesting lectures but really doesn't help your grade. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND for the sake of GPA!
Not open to other opinions. Seemed over the course of the class to be angry with someone or something. Was not interested in teaching anyone anything. Would not recommend unfortunately.
Knows nothing but History of Indians... She should really be teaching History of American Indians course not American History.
She is a difficult woman and an awful teacher. There has to be someone better to take.
Great teacher! Wonderful class. Very willing to help you. She loves history. Communication is key. If you are having problems, just ask for help. I can't wait for class next fall on California History!
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. About 18-20 students dropped over the course of the semester - the class was nearly empty by the end. She is extremely biased and focuses on her favorite parts of history. In order to do well in this class, you must study the book, visit an additional website, AND see the tutor (her words).
it only took me 3 weeks to realize what i got myself into. from day one i knew this class was gonna suck. after checking this site my conspiracies were confirmed. STEER AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER IF YOU VALUE YOUR TIME!!!
i am a 4.0 student (without really trying) have been my entire life. after listening to the introduction i realized that this teacher is crazy!! she expects way too much from anyone that is taking other classes or has a life. if this is the only class you are taking you might pass, otherwise good luck not failing. i dropped after the first day
I hate this teacher. We are half way through the semester and she has only lectures 3 times. She makes the students teach the class with endless boring presentations about the same damn thing. And when she does lecture she talks down to you and seems brainwashed. she expects you to know everything for the test which is 9 chapters and lecture note
Wonderful class! There is so much to learn from this teacher. You must read the books and handouts. This is not an easy A but if you do the work and pay attention it is possible. She wants you to learn. Communication is key. Very willing to help if you don't understand, but don't expect her to do your work for you! 3rd class with this teacher!
I really disliked this class and actually had to drop it (along with a large amount of other students). She is really monotone which makes it hard to pay attention. Her quizzes/tests are not realted to what she has lectured and the questions are extremely broad. I definitely dont recommend this teacher, instead take Maddock!
OMG!! BEWARE THIS YEARCHER IS EXTREMELY HARD SHE LECTURES AND HE LECTUTES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HER TEST! SHE HAS 2 MID-TERMS AND A FINAL ALMOST HALF THE CLASS IS FAILING ONLY 2 OF ABOUT 30 HAVE A'S SHE HAS TO BE THE WORSTY TEACHER I HAVE EVR HAD!
oh wow...i knew i should've dropped this class the first day...but no...i gave the teacher a chance but she doesn't give her students a chance at all...You have a better chance surviving a scene from the movie SAW than you do passing this class
Please be wary before taking this class. The class started out with tons of people trying to add. Now barely 10 are hanging on. She had us use a book that she DOES NOT test out of. We are all using the book SHE recommended, VOL 5. When we take tests, we all couldn't figure out why nothing looked familiar on her tests...
...she does not use the same book she has her students study for her tests. We are using VOL 5, she teaches out of VOL 2 (She admitted this to us a week ago, no wonder we don't recognize anything!) She tests on 5 very thick chapters at a time, TONS of hand outs, movies, out of the book, and her lectures. No study guide is given to help guide you.
Hmmm, where do i start, this teacher is the worst teacher ive ever had in my life. blatenly unfair and loves to make you feel like dirt. She thinks that its funny to laugh when you dont know something. I dont know one person that likes this teacher and i can honestly say no one ever will. do not take this class. she is a horrible unfair teacher.
seriously, everybody before me is completely right...horrible teacher. not the worst person, but horrible teacher. worst lectures ever, worst tests and quizzes, and oh my god boring. I have a 3.8, correction had a 3.8 before her class. The class was beyond full and now there is only 14 of us. Gave her a chance and got burned. Most stressful clas
I've always done great in history, but this class was ridiculous. The class is interesting in that you learn things unknown before; however, tests are excessively hard even if you study for days which I do. Project is ridiculous she is an obnoxious feminist. If you are trying to be a history major, great class for you, if not don't bother.
I really don't know why people don't get it. This teacher is AWESOME. If you want to learn history, you will in her class. If you want an easy grade go somewhere else. One of the most compassionate well meaning teachers I have met. You DO have to read, you DO have to study and you DO have to come to class for the lectures. TERRIFIC TEACHER!
HOLY COW by far the worst teacher ever!!!! its almost a joke she is even a teacher and i actually had to pay to take her class. not one bit helpful even if you ask, laughs in your face when you dont know the answer, tricks you on every test, attacks everything you say, tells you the best you can get is a C and is the meanest illhearted person i kno
To start I feel bad for her because she is obviously miserable and she makes her students share in the misery. I took her 331 class at the same time and had to drop it to focus on this one and I still didn't get an A. Tests are not based on what you read or what she teaches and she literally laughs at students when they are wrong. Awful.
This class requires work, so it's not for sissies. She grades fairly and the group work and discussions are thought provoking.
I took both her 312 and 313 classes at the same time- NOT recomended. She is a hard teacher, and laughs at her students when they're wrong. Every question you may have about the class, or when things are due gets a "Look in the syllabus" answer- even though its written by week, not day. Tests are rediculous, as is the 15 minute presenation.
I took this instructors class with no predispositions. She is boring, condescending, and can be downright rude when emphasizing her political views. We read ton's, took notes non stop, and fought sleep, despite her talking to us like we were 2'nd graders. I had a 4.0 GPA and worked exhaustively for a B. I'm told she doesnt give A's.
She can be very rude to her students, often laughing at them when thye're wrong. SHe is very boring and her class is monotonous with a lot of work. I had to fight for my A and I took almost six pages of notes every day (and I write small)
The only way to do well in this class is to join a study group and review the online questions for each chapter. Her lectures close to non-existant and tends to waste your time putting on movies. She tends to be very biased and defensive when you disagree with her political views. She also fell asleep during a students presentation. Hilarious.
She doesn't have a very organized teaching style and she often acts very high and mighty towards her students. She'll often criticize a wrong answer and she'll sometimes even laugh at you. Overall, even someone who is interested in history probably wouldn't enjoy her class. I'd recommend Gordon Lam if you're going to take History 313 at FLC.
Monotonous lectures, depressing movies, and very dull group presentations. Tests were difficult, even with great lecture notes, reading the book (every chapter of a THICK and dull textbook), and studying the online quizzes. Every class was basically dedicated to woman?s history (in a U.S. history class), and her lectures were very biased towards th
Hardly even seemed to teach the class. For the entire semester, she maybe lectured two hours total (if even that). She had students do all the research and present on that, instead of actually lecturing herself. Also, a good two-thirds of the US History class was devoted entirely to women's history.
She won't answer questions, she will tell you to look at the syllabus. She will put on a video and just leave class to go get a diet pepsi. She never reviews our reading. Her classes are basically completely unorganized. She seriously does laugh at students when they are wrong then denies it when confronted. She is uppity.
she is all over the place, she teaches like your at a major univ.her test are so hard.she gives u way to many handouts, she want a 5 page essay at the end of the yr plus wants a project of a famous person done in front of class, pluss want u to write essay 4 midterms on top of answering the question. she very nice but, it never stops, way to hard !!!!
Still wondering where she gets her test questions as every quiz yields an average of 40% throughout the class. Teaches at a level way too high for a GE class; taught like its an upper-division history class. Getting anything higher than a C seems like its impossible. Bottom line, keep looking for another teacher.
Good teacher, but her tests and quizzes were difficult. The questions really did seem to come out of nowhere and the answer was probly in small print in the textbook. Definitely too hard of a class for GE. I dropped it, it was just too hard for those who weren't history majors or those who were new to history courses. Hard class, hard teacher.
The first day of class I told myself that I should drop the class-I didn't and I now regret it. She obviously loves history but she isn't such an enthusiastic teacher. Her tests are really hard and she's not too helpful when you ask her a question. I sometimes laugh at her face after someone gives a presentation. Her face reads just pure boredom.
Professor Moreno is so amazing. I don't know what all these people are crying about. Her lectures are clear and she will go out of her way to help you. Remember it's college, not high school. Don't expect an easy A but if you read the text and pay attention in class, you shouldn't get lower than a B
haha did she write the one below?? horrible teacher..rude, thinks she's better than everyone. the info we read was interesting, i just wish she taught it better. not used to getting below an a and she made it impossible. DO NOT TAKE!
i wish i could accurately describe my feelings for this woman. after taking her class, i honestly considered dropping out of college altogether and giving up on my life completely. i can't believe people like her are given the authority to lecture and give grades. i just hope that i save the sanity of just one person...do NOT take her. you would find more productivity by using your money and time to invest in breeding and selling stray cats.
Moreno does well in getting through what should be a series of five classes at least, all required. I felt the material to be a bit too packed in for the semester, and you have to keep up on the homework. She gives many opportunities for extra credit. I enjoyed this class. Be communicative and keep an open mind and you will do well.
She's very helpful if you have questions about the material, but will refer you to the syllabus for due date questions. Review ALL class materials before exams. For essay questions, give plenty of information about the topic, especially causes/effects. For the presentation, show causes/effects and show how your topic affected all demographics.
Really hard teacher but she's good. You have to attend every class and read everything. If you do those things you can learn a lot and get a decent grade.
Definitely better than regular history. hard class with too much work for 3 units, but the project/presentation was really fun and interesting. very hard grader. read and memorize EVERYTHING in the text to do well on tests. take the class at your own risk.
DON'T TAKE!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you want to lower your GPA.
too vague as far as what we were trying to learn.
She is inept. Her time management, respect for students time, and effort does not exist. Class info is interesting, but her presentation will put you to sleep. She has already screwed us over on presentations and the semester is only half over. BEWARE! Don't take her class unless you HAVE to.
I refuse to drop this class because I want to get GE out of the way, but I think this one will ding my otherwise pristine GPA. Out of all evil history, this is not a bad subject, but rarely have a met a more condescending, arrogant, distant, and self-absorbed professor. Her patronizing demeanor makes it very hard to focus on the subject.
She is very biased,so I recommend that the only class you take from her is Women's History. The book is boring, but she does go over it in class which gives a clearer understanding of the information. Not alot of extra credit opportunities, but its not impossible to get a good grade in this class.
You watch A LOT of movies which can get boring. She lectures fast and has no visual aids which I would have liked. Also she gives out about 50 handouts through the semester. Tests are based on all the above and the book. I would take her again but she not my favorite. I prefer her over Lam.
Agree with prior comments. Condenscending and boring. Choose your history professor wisely... pick somebody else.
Its a Social justice class... not a history class. Its also not a very good class.
well, first off i love history... but i cant say the same for moreno... shes strict and hard... she isnt the worst teacher but she sure as hell not the best... overall if your a genius you might get a b+ at best...
I had to work my butt off in the class to get an not so great grade. I do believe it's possible to get a good grade but it isn't easy. I think I did alright but that's not without reading a ton, study group, and taking a TON of notes. I wouldn't take her again and it's not like I'm lazy.
DON'T TAKE HER!!! you will soooo regret taking her. Her lectures are awful and her tests are freaking impossible, super hard essay questions. I do well in school and i got an F because she was so terrible. Don't take her cause everyone says shes a terrible professor!
shes not the easiest teacher but she isn't the worst either... overall its hard as hell and she can get very mono tone but just study like a mofo and you will do ok; at best maybe a b if you sacrifice a cat or something.
Oh my god. I am a 3.77 GPA student and am getting a C in this class. It's honestly a nightmare. I'm sure you could get a "good" grade if you read like 10 hours everyday of the textbook, but seriously? Who does that?
If you want an A you must: show up everyday, take everything assigned to the English lab before turning in & make sure journals are analytical,hold/join study groups, read EVERYTHING assigned (there will be a ton), do ALL extra credit, put serious effort into your presentation, study hard before midterm & final. She knows who is really serious.
Her Research Paper was hard, because she does not provide help. She will refer you to the RWC. They are more help than she is in her whole class. Also, her tests are more focused on women's history than the whole time period itself. Her lack of education and interest in the subject makes it hard to obtain focus and perseverance in her class.
Requires you to spend hours a day reading chapters from the book. Her lectures are extremely dull and boring, doesn't go off from powerpoint, she simply stands behind her podium and lectures extremely fast- reading off from the book itself. Tests were very difficult, the whole class is based on memorizing the textbook
Trust me do not take her she seems like she doesn't ever want to be there and has no intrest in history! Her quizzes and tests are unbelievable even if you are a history lover.
I didn't think teachers could be this bad. Her homework assignments are equivalent to a 5 page essay and they about the play and not history. Second, there are 2 within the same week. The thing is, it seems like the whole reason she is teaching is so you have to buy her play and do homework on how to make it better. Not recommended
She shows movies every day. She doesn't teach and hardly lectures. No work is done in class; she grades only 2 quizzes, two midterms, a presentation, a final, and a paper. You have to have many study groups and learn from other students because she will not teach at all.
This class is U.S. History! She teaches more of hw women where mistreated. Not to mention her grading is brutal. I have recieved A's in both my composition classes, Yet she claims I can't write. I DO NOT RECOMMENED THIS CLASS. Many people I know withdrew. Not to mention she acts like you are dumb if you ask a question and will say see the syllabus!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!! Not only will she not help you and test on random things not covered in class. She dosn't seem to wanna accomidate DSPS students well at all and gives them a hard time. She dosn't make an environment where many can succeed.
our syllabus says we were suppose to get into the depression and wwII and its the 2 weeks till the end of the class and we just started learning about it. we spent the entire year reading her play and learning about indians. she doesnt even use the book, but expects you to know it all. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!
No one was clear on what she was asking from her students on writing assignments. Tests are difficult, she pulls obscure, seemingly unimportant details from 500 pages of text, hours of lecture, and random videos. I received an A, but many people worked just as hard, if not harder than me and received C's. It's a difficult, time-consuming class.
Doesnt teach at all. Lectures are far too fast and dont cover quiz material. Tests are way too hard and most of your grade is based on them. You will seriously regret taking any of her classes.
Moreno is absolutely REDICULOUS! I went from getting A's at a university, to getting a C in her class. The second half of the semester we spent over 75% of the time just watching documentaries, and over half of the final was questions that we had not even gone over in class. I would HIGHLY DISCOURAGE anyone from taking this class!
I totally understand other people's comments, but personally I enjoyed her class and received an A. Pretty hard tests but grades fairly on essays and presentation (easy on presentation) and offers easy extra credit. She tells you what she expects from you. I thought she was really nice and easy to talk to!
She has to be the worst professor I have ever met. Out of her whole class, the amount she actually teaches is ~20%. 80% is watching documentary videos, student presentations, and endless handouts. no power points or outlines. She basically set up her class in a way she don't have to do anything. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Very hard tests.
Moreno is a great teacher as far as her lectures go. But her quizzes and tests are extremely hard. The journals that we have to do throughout the semester are hard to get a B or higher on. Interesting class, but difficult tests!
Unless you learn best on your own from reading from the textbook, an excessive amount of handouts, and documentary "clips" that take up the whole class time, do NOT take this class. On many occasions, I could literally follow along with her "lectures" by reading out of the book as she talked.
TERRIBLE! One of if not the worst class you can take. The entire class is centered around her play and not on California HIstory. The homework assignments are equivalent to 5 page essays about her play and not on actual history. On top of that she expects you to understand everything from her lectures yet jumps from topic to topic!! AWFUL CLASS!!!!
She doesn't 'teach' her lectures are almost pointless and she talks too fast. You have to read the book (which is boring) and memorize everything plus her 10-20 handouts that she doesn't bother to review. Most professors give you a study guide to help students, not her. She gives you 4 essay topics and then she picks one... terrible 'teaching.'
I don't think she realizes most students are not history majors! Her lectures are hard to follow and her tests ask few questions about small details. Not a very effective way of teaching. She is nice but lacks excitement and ability to engage students with the material. Seems like no one cares about this class or subject.
The class was easy for me, but not interesting in the least. The total grade is based on 1.two museum visits (5%) 2. Short Group Presentation (5%) 3. Individual Presentation (15%) 4. Ca Rose(15) 5. three exams (20% each). Reading the textbook and taking good notes is essential to doing well on tests. Her lectures are right out of the book.
Worst teacher I've had at FLC in 2 years! Be ready to study twice as hard and get average grades. She teaches women's history, she uses a lot of the same material for US History. The presentations are a joke, not sure what the goal is... they are vague and pointless, if she wants us to learn something she should provide better presentation topics.
Absolutely awful teacher. Good luck
Just awful. Seems like a good person, but just a god awful teacher
Professor Moreno is one of the WORST professors I've ever had at FLC. Her way of teaching is putting on boring VHS documentaries. Her tests are also ridiculously tough. With the lack of teaching and involvement in the class, she is not a proper fit for being an instructor. Good lord, she is worst than drinking sour milk.
Her class is so-so. She seems like a nice person, but at some times she seems really fake. Her class is very hard to do well in. Plus side, there are a lot of chances for extra credit.
I really struggled with this class, even thought I studied and took notes. She is really unclear, and her lectures aren't helpful. Usually she puts on documentaries, even though she has previously stated that they are inaccurate. She taught the Salem Witch Trials by referring to the movie The Crucible. Her class was inaccurate and convoluted.
It's a shame that I, or anyone else for that matter, had to pay for this class! She's by far the worst teacher I have experienced at FLC. She is Common Core at its finest. Her teaching style is mindless. If there is ANY OTHER teacher or class you can take, spare yourself, and do so! Oh and she takes God out of history. Good luck!
Expects students to remember information from hundreds of pages of text, all notes taken in class, videos played in class and any presentation, for the exam. Offers NO guidance.
Is the worst!
I really wish I had used this site before signing up for history with Professor Moreno. I noticed that in most of her lectures, she basically reiterated whatever was written in the book. You really need to practice extreme dedication to the reading assignments in order to pass. On a side note, she seems to always be in a bad mood.
I was excited to take this class but I wish I had seen these terrible reviews beforehand. She puts on documentariesmovies half the time in class & leaves the room so she doesn't have to do anything, journals are nearly impossible to score above a B-, tests are hard and pull from obscure references from the huge amount of reading she assigns.
Deborah Moreno was one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She speaks in a condescending tone making you feel like you're in elementary school. She hardly every used the white board. She never used any power-point slides to support her lectures. She'll put on outdated documentaries then leave. Honestly, I'm surprised she has a job at FLC.
Professor Moreno speaks to students like they are retarded. All you do is read, and the text book is so confusing to me, it jumps back and forth from time periods which caused me much confusion. I do not recommend this teacher at all. Biggest waste of money that I have spent on college. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!!
Prof. Moreno is the worst teacher that I've ever had in my entire life. She shouldn't even be called a teacher. She gives a few large assignments throughout the semester, so if you mess up on one of those, you are in a rut. She puts on documentaries all the time and leaves the room. She gives out A TON of handouts to read. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Professor Moreno is easily the worst teacher at FLC. Do not take her class, I read these reviews before taking her class and thought I could handle it. I was wrong, it is not worth sitting through a semester of her terrible lectures and thousands of handouts to barely get a C.
This was a tough class, but Moreno was the first teacher to put emphasis and give me access to women's history and people of color. It really made me think about how history is made and why it is taught the way it is taught. I know it can be hard to digest but it's a progressive model that I respect. Not a class for slackers!
I'm reading all these reviews and honestly, she wasn't that bad. If you can't put in the work to read and get a good grade, good luck in college. I'm a visual learner so I enjoyed her documentaries she showed in class (although they were kinda out dated), and she gave you everything you needed to succeed, the handouts, the notes, etc.
I am a history major and i will say that this class was a mistake. she assigns the readings and then READS them in class. she only uses the projector for films. She graded our research papers really harshly. The whole class was ridiculous. find a different professor if you have to.
A lot of people don't like her, but if you do your reading and turn in your journals, you will pass this class.
This class was way more work than I was expecting. She was very nice, but not the right kind of teacher for some students. Having to remember class lecture notes, textbook notes, video notes, and paper handouts for the test and very specific quotes was way more than a hassle to say the least.
Professor Moreno expect college level work. Interesting material and lectures. Be prepared to read, analyze, and write.
She's an amazing professor and you'll learn so much if you pay attention. She's a really tough grader so be prepared to work your butt off. She's really nice and passionate about history. Don't take this class if you want an easy A.
WORST TEACHER I'VE HAD AT FLC. I've been at FLC for several years + consider myself a good student but this is by far the worst class I've taken at FLC. The class is terribly hard while receiving very little direction. We watch a lot of old docu. and class is very dry+hard to sit through. class roster had 35 starting. only about 9 students left
Her lectures are all over the place, She skips around and you're supposed to understand. She allows questions but won't answer them instead she directs you to the textbook. Her tests are typically 10 questions over the last 3-4 chapters, handouts, videos, lectures and presentations. A lot of information for very few questions. Very frustrating!
Deborah was a very compassionate teacher, making use of every students strengths. She definitely made the class HARD, for me at least. I definitely lost my mind in her books. She knows what she wants from each student and demands you meet her expectations. My head was stimulated by the visuals throughout each day.
I graduated from Ponderosa 2016, with a 3.5 GPA. I though this class would be like ones in high school. Wrong. No powerpoints or visual aids other than irrelevant videos that have nothing to do with the tests, unclear instructions as far as what is expected on essays, Have a question? "Well, reread your notes." Worst class I've taken EVER.
Practically makes it impossible to take good notes. Won't answer questions with a clear answer. She shows videos that have nothing to do with the tests that we are trying to study for. The readings she gives us are numerous and over half of them won't be mentioned on the quizzes and tests.
Some classes have very dry material, but Moreno is often wet. She often gives direct eye contact and expects the best from you. The lectures are very long and hard, so keep your head into it. The class did BLOW ME away with the amount of visuals that are supposed to stimulate are heads? I found them boring. Overall do not recommend.
I don't understand why everyone in the reviews is being so terrible? If you do the reading and actually pay attention, you'll understand the content. I bombed the first midterm because I didn't do any reading. My one complaint is she's not the best at planning presentations; week 14s are now presenting in week 16. I love her as a person though!
One of the most difficult teachers I have had. The key to her class is to show up to class, take notes, and READ THE TEXTBOOK. She grades you mostly on textbook stuff.
The class started with 30 and ended with 12. While i did well in her class, it took more work than all of my other classes combined. The ammount of reading is absurd and she gives no direction in assignments and requries you to read 3 FULL LENGTH BOOKS in adition to regular reading. The tests can be on anything in reading, lecture, or videos.
As long as you pay attention in class, do the reading and journals you will do fine. You need to do a 10 min presentation and read 1 full length biography in addition to reading upwards of 80 pages a week. The tests are on any lecture, reading or video no matter how insignificant/specific the fact. She is NEVER lenient or understanding.
Not an easy class. Its more like a college class at a 4yr than a community college Make sure you take notes and do all the readings. Start a study group ASAP Her multiple choice is hard. Be sure to stay on top of your assignments and prepare them WELL Shes a hard teacher but she'll give you an appreciation for history. You have to work for an A
Do not take a class from her. I read the reviews on here before taking her class and thought it couldn't be that bad, but I was wrong. She puts on videos for the entire class period most of the time and the test questions are the most insignificant details possible. I also had to do a ten minute presentation.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE INSTRUCTOR!!!!! YOU DO NOT WRITE ANALYTICAL PAPERS ON HISTORY!!!! I don't recommend anyone take her class. Her textbook for History 312 is terrible and is not in chronological order.
In the time that I had this professor before dropping, it was such a slow, excruciating experience that was bogged down with nigh-pointless videos and lectures that you were expected to know and study facts about no matter how niche whilst somehow juggling external reading material ATOP your textbook chapters. This irrelevant busy work was weekly.
As a person I think shes great, as a professor not so much. Im a 4.0 student and have a C so far in this class (mid semester). NO STUDY GUIDE. Doesnt even let you know what the focus should be on. So its up to you to read all three chapters, study movie notes, and lecture notes all for a 10 question quiz. ESSAY style midterms also ! heads up!
Very sweet lady unless you do something to make her upset In class is documentaries and lectures the whole time, and she expects you to take thorough notes
I passed my previous Hist class with an A. It wasn't that I didn't understand history. HER TESTS ARE TRICK QUESTION TESTS. yup, you'll get a lot of answers that say both A & B , all of the above, or both C & D making it extremely difficult to be 100% with ANYTHING! I don't understand how trick questions help your students!
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I had multiple people warn me the class was awfull, but I took it anyways due to it fit my scedule.(regretting it) she talks about what she wants and tests that way to. I always take full time semesters and her class had me overwelmed all semester .Take another hist 313 class. You will tank me later
Debbie is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. It's ear impossible to tell which information you'll be tested on because of the sheer volume of reading lectures handouts and student presentations you call be tested on. She does not provide helpful study guides. Your only hope is forming study groups if you want to survive & Her lectures kill.
Hardest class ever. Heavy lectures every time (w/o powerpoint, be ready to listen carefully). Graded on a few incredibly hard quizzes and tests (multiple choice and essay questions)+super long analytical research paper. She graded quizzes immediately but won't give you your essay back until the very last day. Heavy readings. Don't miss class!
I have taken Prof. Moreno for two semesters now. She puts a lot of thought into her lectures, and being in her class has given me a true appreciation for history. It is a difficult class, with lots of reading and a 5-6 page research paper, but in my opinion it was definitely worth the effort.
She put almost no work into that class. She maybe talked for half the class and then we would watch a documentary. Heavily put her beliefs into her teaching. Also only talked about the progressive stuff from an era and left us to read about the rest and put stuff we had never seen on the test. Also never put the grades up online. Very frustrating.
Honestly, the other people leaving reviews for Moreno are just stupid. The grading curve is very generous, as you only need a 60% to pass and she offers 5% extra credit (that's half a letter grade!). Pay attention in lecture, put in the time on your project/final paper and do the extra credit and you'll do just fine.
Morenos class was one of the best classes I have ever taken. She is very clear when lecturing and always answers questions with detail. As long as you pay attention in class, do your work, and study notes/readings (which is not hard if you are interested in the subject) then you will do well on quizzes and tests.
Do you like clearly organized and well delivered lectures which go over material relevant to what you will be graded on? Yeah? Then don't take her classes. Ever. She is terrible at her job and relies on the students going outside of her classroom just to learn the material. Horrible attitude. Learned nothing from her. Do. Not. Take. Her. Class.
I would NOT suggest taking Moreno's class if you are not a HIST major OR if you are taking a full load of classes. Tests and quizzes only cover a small percentage of what you have read/listened to in lecture. Tricky test questions. Expects you to form study groups outside of class to master material. Nice lady, just not what I want in a professor.
Took her course 2 years ago but it wasn't bad. Take notes during lecture and study regularly. Lectures are basically the textbook. Hints at which handouts to pay attention to for the exam. Lets you pick your research topic, put in time & effort. Could've been like a 15 min group presentation but everyone chose to do their own 10 min presentation.
She's a sweet lady, but her lectures only graze the material you'll find on the test. Prepare to do a lot of reading and independent studying on what you'll be learning about. Keep track of your old essays and test scores too, because you will actually have to calculate your grade in the class by yourself.
Her lectures are the worst and all she does is make weird hand gestures. They have NO structure making it impossible to follow along. I love taking notes and she made it nearly impossible to even take anything away from what she was saying. You are required to teach yourself because almost nothing she goes over in class actually ends up on a test.
Literally awful. I had so much anxiety in this class. All she does is talk randomly about stuff that wont even be on the test. Half of the things she says we dont even have to remember, and then she just puts up some old documentary for us to watch. You basically teach yourself. No reminders, no online grading posted - nothing. Id rather not!!
Not enough space. Read whole textbook 100%. Awful lecture, nothing is emphasized. Awful studying since nothing is emphasized. Read whole text+too many small font papers. Terrible tests, doesn't cover class, 1/4 chance at essay question. Project unrelated to class, takes too much class time. Poor work ethics, doesn't know own syllabus. Don't do it.
You basically teach yourself in this class due to the fact that all she tells you to do is, read the textbook and youll know! Her lectures dont really go over the stuff that will be on the tests/quizzes. She talks really fast which makes it hard to take notes. (If you are dyslexic, like me, I do not recommend because it was extremely difficult)
Mostly you watch videos in this class. Very little lecture. Just when you think you cant read anymore you get 5 more handouts each class to read that will be on exams and quizzes. If you love/know a lot about history this class is fine for you. You have to be self motivated she does not care if you havent gone over it in class its still on exam
This is the most unorganized professor I have ever had the misfortune of having. She doesn't even have canvas, and sometimes there will be eight handouts for one class session. We're currently halfway through the semester and just last week she finally taught us how to calculate our own grade.
She expects a lot from her students, so she isn't the easiest teacher to take. With that being said as long as you get the reading done you are guaranteed a good grade. I'd recommend participating in class even if you aren't entirely sure in your answer: she really likes students who regularly do it.
AWFUL! WOULD NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS AGAIN.
COVID-19 meant first 1/2 in person & second 1/2 online. In person she would read off her notes with no visuals and at times turn on a documentary. Online she did even less teaching. She refused to use Canvas and would only send an influx of emails about things to read and watch and basically you figure it out yourself. Papers instead of MC quizzes
Extremely unorganized. Her lectures are all over the place. Doesnt actually teach, uses documentaries and student presentations. Hard to get in touch with. Just dont even bother with taking her class its not worth it.
I don't want to be rude, but I'm going to be blunt. She treats students like her enemies, she gives the most slow, drowsy lectures every, and her perspectives are very outdated. I felt uncomfortable in her class every day, and I struggled to stay awake during her condescending, slow-paced lectures.
Wait a semester to take history if she's your only option, while teaching online classes she refuses to adapt and learn Canvas like her other peers. Entire class of students agreed to email about grievances due to her lack of clarity. She has her TA teach all of the lectures, her entire workload is pushing send on an incoherent email once a week.
I LOVE HER. She is didfuclt and gives you serious critism, but her lectures are so intriguing I was so excited to share the stories she would tell to my friends. HIGHLY RECCOMEND
This has been the most difficult class I have ever taken at Folsom Lake College, not because the criteria is hard; no. Because you are basically teaching the class to yourself. Moreno will not attend any "mandatory class meetings" She will not tell you your grade, or ever post on canvas. I have received important class info in my JUNK email folder.
She is a genuine professor who demonstrates passion and mastery of the subject that she teaches. Some of her ways of teaching are questionable, like not giving you a letter grade till the end of the semester, and not utilizing Canvas, but she is caring and YOU WILL LEARN in this class. If you want an easy A, then do not take it.
Was in HIST 311 but it won't let me enter that. She didn't know how to use canvas so she emailed all of our assignments and tests to us. Very easy to miss an assignment this way. Class was supposed to be asynchronous but she made us meet every week for tutoring lessons that counted toward our grade. Tests are essay questions, group work
I had her when the pandemic hit, so I had 1/2 on ground 1/2 online. She's a really hard grader and made us calculate our own grades. She's a sweet lady and gave interesting lectures but she's also the hardest teacher I've ever had. When we went online she wouldn't use canvas/zoom, emailed lectures and documentaries we had to buy. I don't recommend.
Best history teacher. Goes beyond the text book. Take good notes
While the professor has interesting lectures, the class is quite disorganized. Take good notes, stay on top of readings, and use unstuck ai for study prep to manage the workload. Grading is tough, but the material is engaging if you put in the effort.
