Great Teacher

Great professor! Hard but good and fair. You will learn a LOT, and if you put in the effort, and struggle a tiny bit, you will do well. Also, an open mind helps a lot! Really helped/forced me to grow as a person.

A bit absentminded, but fair. Her assignments are interesting and varied and she always has something new to talk about.

Great english class-a few essays and thats the entire class. easy A.

she was a hard teacher...she emphasizes dedication on reading and writing, but she is very helpful, the books she picked were awesome, the experience is definitely rewarding. Prepare to work hard for your grade.

She is an incredible force in the Palomar English department, and anyone who doesn't like her just isn't interested in learning.

Awesome, awesome teacher, very philosophical at times, yet mostly easy to follow. The exams are great! not hard to get a good grade. Don't know about Eng 100, but I would definitely take it with her anywayz.

Great Teacher! Allowed students to mostly lead class discussions. Only two essays, basically your choice concerning subject matter. Midterm was also easy. It was everything discussed in class, but be prepared to write a long time; her whole mid-term is written.

I would recommend taking any class with Dr. Paes De Barros to anyone interested in English (and even those not). An entirely enjoyable experiance. Very funny and clear. An absolute joy of a professor.

She is an easier teacher but the stuff she talks about is of no interest to me. But I do have to say that taking her class is worth your while.

probably between a 2 and 3 on the easiness scale, shes a good teacher and cares a lot about her students, english 203 consisted of 3 essays and 1 10pg double spaced research paper, no tests. shes a fair grader.

I think she is absolutly adorible... kinda scatter brained, but helpful. one of those teachers that points out the good things in your writing. Just do the reading- bare through it and you'll be fine!

In love with her own voice and thoughts too much, bu willing to help you out on essays. Walked out of the classroom during the final exam. Made some people keep their hands raised for over five minutes while she talked on and on about who-knows-what. Most books revolved around antiquated European literature, not contemporary golobal literature.

She is a very inspirational teacher who will teach you things that you won't learn anywhwere else. Shes always thinking, which makes her seem crazy, but she's really a genius.

She turned my view on English completely around from not wanting to take it to enjoy going to class. She assigns books and then essay which are quite easy because they are your interpretations.

She's awesome- very inspirational. If you are an excellent writer already, she will actually give you outstanding feedback so you can improve even more (so few community college professors do b/c it's rare I guess). Interesting and fun.

Best english teacher of my whole life. She made me excited to write and allowed us to come to our own conclusions on literature. She guides you gently through the texts and is a complete romantic. Speak up in class and she'll back you the rest of the semester. She WANTS you to do well!

Very nice teacher.Loves to chat about everything.She is not demanding.Easy tests!Read online outlines and you can get A's!I read 2 of the 7 books and got a B.Only two papers and 2 tests.No quizzes.If you enjoy reading or hate it take her.She will help you as much as you need.Take notes on the discussions, they help on the tests.Recommended.Great!;)

simply excellent class and professor

She's a great teacher. She gets the class involved in discussions and her sense of humor is hilarious. She is a very brilliant professor and highly recomended.

I've actually taken 5 classes with Dr. Paes de Barros and she was an awesome teacher. I mean that in the literal sense, she inspires awe! She's so helpful, so engaged in the texts and gets students excited about English. What a wonderful, wonderful lady!

Easiest class ever! Just do 2 papers (opinion based) and 1 easy midterm and easy final (50% oe each are opinion based) for the entire class! 9 novels for this class but you don't need to really read them as at every class she fills you in as to what happened in every reading assignment...I only read 2 books and will get a B+ or A easy.

She is so fun!!!she makes the class very interesting. She leaves no hwk but to read and something u might like...no quizes. take her if u have a change. adorable

Tells you to read but at next class tells you/fills you in on reading assignment all you need to know, 2 easy short essay papers due, 1 easy midterm, 1 easy final. All are opinionated and you'd have to be a moron to get less than a B! Almost everyone in my class got A's. Movies and discusions for most of classes. Super easy & fun. Take her.

Professor Paes de Barros was great! More then willing to help when needed, even staying after class. Willing to work with students on essay assignments. She was cute and perky and great at leading discussions. While I had no interest in this class previously, she made it very enjoyable!

Great teacher!I love this lady. What a flexible, understanding, person. The freedom you get in wiriting essays is really helpful! If you hate English TAKE HER!!!! She wants you to find your writing voice. She'll call on you in class to talk about the readings which is so laid back you feel so comfortable with her.

Gave numerous books to buy just to read 1 or 2 short stories from each. No exams! Only a paper to write every 2 weeks or so & lots of disscusions. Very willing to help you get an A but directions sometimes vague. Easy to please for good grade. She will work hard to help you suceed in this class... great teacher, easy to deal with (always happy)

great teacher, you can miss class half the time and be fine. She makes you really understand the meaning behind books and the class is pretty fun.

I loved this Teacher. I took her for Eng 50 years ago. I started in her 100 class this semester but had to drop due to family emergency. I will take her in the spring. I LOVE HER...Very willing to help

This is the best teacher that i have had at palomar! i loved her and the class. she is very friendly, approachable, and considerate. she will do everything in her power to help you learn and earn the grade u want. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I took her for 203 and was dreading taking my last English course. It ended up being my favorite class. She assigns great books and the class discussion is always entertaining. Her lectures are very interesing as well. She is one of the most intelligent and inspiring women I have ever met. I want to be her when I grow up!

She is a really good teacher. There is really no way to fail unless you just dont pay attention or do the work. She makes it easy to understand and is very helpful. I would have her as a teacher again for sure.

My favorite instructor since I came to Palomar one year ago. She is fun, easy-going and personable, encouraging and supportive. She is also very passionate about writing and very helpful with improving your work. Definitely recommended!

really cool teacher. totally passionate about the subject. only like 2 essays and the midterm and final which are easy if you take notes, and listen to her. read about 5 big novels and a couple short stories. shes kinda in love with her own voice because she thinks out loud a lot, but still a really great great professor. take if you can

ENG 203 Student here.After reading the reviews, she seemed like a great teacher. I have realized she played favorites and most of these reviews are probably those favorites.If you participate and attend, she would favor you.If you dont, she could care less for you. She lost one of my essays and was 10-20 mins late to every class (including final)

after reading these negative reviews... de barros gives you a good grade on your essays if you follow the format she asks and if you write well, that's all. people who are negative about her probably arn't very good at english. she's fantastic

paes de barros is FANTASTIC! all of these negative reviews- you're all probably bad writers and that's why you received the grade you did! she's so inspiring and compassionate about the subject. i think she's just fabulous

I don't remember actually waking up and being eager and willing to go to English class before. Barros is very fun and gives you a lot of freedom of choice in essays (And I loved doing them believe it or not). I'm taking her again for ENG 203 despite my college plan. ;)

Like her a lot, was very helpful I would talk to her everytime after class when I needed too and would give me any help she could, if I didnt understand she would find a way that I would. She is not completely easy though be prepared to actualy wright a bunch and read too overall AWESOME professor

She is awesome! Expects time and effort, but from what I hear about other English classes, this one is MUCH easier than most. She is a difficult grader and particular about writing style, but she is very VERY clear as to what she wants. Great person, great personality, super nice, will be accomodating if you have a legit emergency. Highly reccomend

if you're thinking of taking this class because it sounds easy, turn away! She is a very wonderful person, but such a difficult grader.. Which can be fun and challenging, but when you only turn in 4 assignments all semester (all essays: one 15 pager &one inclass), there's no room for any messing up. I love her as a person but Hate this class!

I used to be really confident in the essays I wrote until I came to this class, now I doubt myself! HARD grader, has her 3 or 4 favorite students in the class, is late everyday, is a little disheveled, and there is no real need to show up to class other than turning in an assignment. She is nice teacher though..

I LOVED HER! Her class is pretty interesting for an English class. I just really liked her. She lets out of class early, and you can still pass if you don't attend every class. Her classes were actually pretty fun to attend. Definitely would recommend her.

Grade was based on 3 essays (1 in-class and 1 research paper) very helpful when it comes to the essays. very funny too, kinda querky. Would take her class again

She's really nice and in the beginning of class she always like to talk with the class, trying to get us involved in the lecture. Her lectures are really clear and no doubt, she'll help you pass the final easily. Just paragraph summaries on short stories in the book and most of the essay prompts are interesting and easy to do. I highly recommend!

Amazing teacher all around.

Very fun professor. I would say she is like a high school teacher. Very helpful and tries to relate to everybody and get involved. The readings were interesting and the work was easy. I barely had to go to class and I still had no trouble on doing any of the work. She sometimes lets class out early. Yet, her lectures seem too repetitive.

She is one of the best english teachers out there, she likes to hear the classes opinions. Highly recommend her :D!You do have to write a lot of essays though...

Amazing teacher, was willing to help anyone who asked for help. As long as you pay attention in class, read the material, and actually work on your essays you will most likely receive an A. Would recommend to anyone who is dedicated to their work and wants much feedback. Great teacher! Love he!

She really wants to see her students do well! She assigned a total of 5 essays but helps with all of them, even the hardest one which is 12 pages. She makes it as easy as possible! She is so intelligent and a master of her craft. She will make you a better writer! She is strict in regards to assignments but pretty laid back with everything else.

Dr. Paes De Barros is wonderful! She truly cares about the success of her students and makes the class enjoyable. She offers a lot of help and loves what she does.

Loved her class! Lots of essay's and summaries but very easy to write, and take no more than and hour or two for each essay! Only a couple books read sparsely and a few articles read. She is very helpful in improving your structure of writing. An easy class as long as you turn in the essay's and summaries! and only test is the final!

Great teacher, easy to understand. There are alot of papers but they are easy A's as long as you do them. She is also very interesting.

Great teacher! Very understanding, very chill and funny. Her writing is hard to understand but if you can't read it. Very easy class, I did not read any of the material (just skimmed through) and passed, so if you read the material you will for sure pass (she does not like failing students) 4 essays total the last one is a 12 pg. research paper.

She's a nice, helpful professor. You might have a problem understanding her writing. She is a crucial grader. Dr. Paes de Barros loves to entertain and proving help to those who search it. Not the easiest professor, but she helps you improve your writing skills.

Outstanding professor who is extremely passionate about her lectures and course material. Fairly easy grader of whom at times, make challenging midterms. Her lectures for class 220 are impressive i highly recommend you bring a recorder to record everything. I enjoy that she inspires you to learn from the characters in the stories. Going to miss her

Professor Paes de Barros is an amazing person. I just took her English 203 class and I've never been more interested to read books. We had to read 4 over the semester, and although the first 2 were pretty slow, I absolutely adored the second 2. She grades a little tough but it's because she wants you to excel. Would take her class again.

She is pretty clear, but loves to talk about herself and often bunny trails. She is kind, but very opinionated & green peace, and will press her view (my friend in ENG 203 agrees). Essays: 1 research, 2 in class, & 2 other. As long as you use basic writing techniques and meet deadlines, you'll pass. Writing is easy for me, so it was an easy A.

Great prof! She is helpful, very easy to talk, and honestly feels like a friend. She respects everyone's opinion. There were debates basically every other class, but that's what made it so fun! Papers need sound evidence & strong analysis to get an A. Explain! "What's the point of college if it doesn't take you out your comfort zone?"-Dr. deBarros

I took Dr. De Barros for English 202, and she assigned five books. Some of them had bad stuff in them like sexual content and lots of language. There were 2 essays, one in class essay and, a research paper. She is a Post-Modernist Humanist and I thought her lectures were boring. But she is very nice person and a fair grader.

She is awesome! She assigns really good books and loves to discuss them. If you didn't get a chance to read a few chapters you will be able to catch up from the discussions that are pretty in depth. Loves teaching and cares about students. She wants you to love literature and learning. Wonderful teacher.

An extremely talented professor who manages to be smart, caring, and fun, professor Paes De Barros has been one of the biggest influences on me as a person both in and out of class. I cannot praise her enough for how great of a teacher she is in every sense of the word. Her lectures are always fascinating and exciting, a true gem of a professor!

She is the sweetest and greatest person! I loved having her as a Professor. This class is a literature course so get ready to read. She grades gently though which was helpful. Not very many assignments which was awesome. She loves open discussions and cares about your opinions! Overall a very great class!

If you want to actually have a clear focus on improving a skill you might want to find another. We would usually discuss the previous readings and sometimes she would go off on tangents. If your class is shy then get ready to get picked on randomly. Essays that were given were easy (2), tests (2) were quote/character based. She's very forgiving.

She's so nice! She is super clear on her grading criteria and she's always available to read/correct essays before they're due. Going to class totally gives you a leg up. It's an english class so you definitely have to read the books. We had two quizzes, two essays, one in class essay, and a research paper. I spent maybe 2-3hrs/week and got an A.

Many short stories to read. She is caring and is willing to help. Professor is really funny, also cancels a lot on class.

Deborah is delightfully kooky and colorful. Her lectures are hilarious and full of interesting discussion. We even watched cartoons one day. She's particularly fond of short stories, and there was a LOT of reading, but not many assignments. Only complaints: she needs to worry less about offending people and just speak her mind. :)

Probably the first great teacher I've had at Palomar college. She's funny and charismatic despite my dull, lifeless class. She's quirky and captivating and I can tell she's really passionate about what she's teaching. She's not too harsh a grader, but then again you gotta really work for that A. She knows exactly what makes a good paper.
