She is the best. When someone didn't understood something, she explained it until the material was understood. Comprehensive proffesor... I RECOMEND YOU TO TAKE HER AS A PROFFESOR!!!!

Professor Shaffer is awesome. She is extremely fair, and very nice. She lets you drop your lowest test grade, and the final is just questions from the previous tests so you know EXACTLY what questions will be on it and what the answers are. I would definitly recommend taking her. :) oh yeah .. DON'T need the book at all, so don't bother buying it.

shes so nice and funny. understands that school sucks so she tries to make it easy on you. which is rare in teachers. only bad thing about her is that half the stuff on the study guide isnt on the tests which can get kinda annoying. you kinda need the textbook to get some answers that arent on her powerpoint but are on the study guide.

She was so kind and helpful all throughout the semester. I wouldnt have gotten an A if it wasnt for her extra credit and fair grading. Take her if Bio isnt your strongest subject. If you try hard you can def get an A!!!

She is the best teacher I've had at NOVA! She is very easy to understand. She is very hands on in the lab, good at answering questions, uses great examples and stories, funny and kind, but you have to go to class and read to do well dont skip! the labs and quizes are easy the disecting is gross but she really helps you it get it.

Professor Shaffer is really easy to understand. She gives out examples to make sure you know what she's talking about and she's funny :) Going to class is strictly mandatory and doing the quizzes and reading are a must. They aren't difficult at all and she is right there ready to help. TAKE HER CLASSES IF BIOLOGY IS THAT DIFFICULT FOR YOU!

Take her class! She's awesome. Knows her stuff and wants her students to succeed, but she doesnt GIVE you the grade. The work load isnt heavy and the term paper is only 1 page. She gives study guides to all exams, which are EXTREMELY helpful. She's lenient on attendance, but because she doesn't really use the text book, lecture is REALLY important.

She's a great professor if your interested in the topic, but she's no nonsense and she won't rescue your grade in the last two weeks. I'm generally not an A student but my grade reflected my curiosity towards the topic.

Otherwise,she's really nice!There's no HW but studying for her 5 exams and she'll drop the lowest grade, including the final! Lab is fun though sometimes annoying,but she makes it so much easier. Prof. Shaffer is exceptional. Take her class if you want to learn. You need to earn your grade. Study Guides and excellent PowerPoint lectures are provided. Textbook is optional. She is extremely approachable and helpful. If you are looking for an easy grade without investing any time in studying you need to find another BIO class.

She is the greatest professor I had so far. She is passionate and funny, cares for students. If she thinks her explanation did not work, she will try other ways. She welcomes questions, and is fair in scores. Study the PP and study guides and you will do well. She will help the ones falling behind but dont try cheating... loved her.

At first I thought she was a bad professor because she went fast but I gave it sometime then I loved her. She is amazing and LOVES it when you ask for extra credit. She talks to me outside of class and still says hello to me. Ask for help she has office hours for a specific reason.

Powerpoint lectures along with in-class assignments. Attendance is recorded. Skipping class won't help you pass since labs are based on lecture classes. 5 exams (lowest test score dropped) and a easy short essay. Textbook isn't required but lab book is.

Hilarious. I hate biology but her personality makes class fun. I will take her again for BIO 102. The quizzes are easy all you have to do is briefly study for them, and she gives out reviews for the exams.

Had to retake bio 101 and I'm so glad I took this class. She knows her stuff and only teaches what will be on the exams. No hw. No textbook, you only need the lab book. She's nice and there to help. Puts slides and study guides for the tests on blackboard. All info is on the powerpoints. Bio isn't an easy subject but prof. Shaffer makes it easier.

Professor Shaffer is the best! Super helpful and clear on directions and always willing to answer any questions. 4 exams with the lowest dropped an a final, which is cake if you study. She has a great sense of humor and made the class very fun! Will be taking her again for the second part of environment. Highly recommended!

Biology is not a easy subject but thankfully she gives you a study guide and teaches only on what will be on the test. Focus on what she is saying and use that to fill in the study guides it will help. All her power points are online so use them because she can go fast sometimes. There are 4 exams and the final you can drop one even the final.

I took her for 101 and took 102 with her also. She is amazing so nice and funny. Focus on the study guides! She is there to help. I didn't even buy the textbook not needed. She very knowledgeable on the subject. Only one very easy paper at the end. Able to drop one exam including the final. 102 is more anatomy based then 101. Take her!

First I've enjoyed sci since 8th grade. Answer/study everything on the study guide sure A/B on tests. Labs ok, great field trips. Lowest grade out of all tests dropped. Book is useful for studyguide even if she says not needed. Lots of info is covered, but organized so it relates even if jumping back and forth in text. So glad to have had her.

Hands down my fav. class I've taken @ NVCC. She is truly inspirational when it comes to this subject! Tests are heavily graded and have short answers. So you have to really study but she gives out amazing study guides. Participation is key, if you miss lectures you won't get class points. You do have to put some effort but it's best science class!

Mrs. shaffer is among one of the best teachers ive had in NOVA. The lectures are not boring at all. She covers everything that will be on the test, she will tell you what you dont need to know when stuff come up in lecture. Theres a study guide for evey test. And You get extra credit for doing doing the pop quizes and get full just for doing it.

Awesome teacher. Took her for bio 101 summer 6 week. Labs were super easy, she even printed out the lab worksheets for us so we didn't even need to write on ours(Which means i can now re-sell mine). Lab was super easy. She gives %4 bonus credit total. Lectures arnt Boring. Overall with lab+lecture being a easy A, which helps if you do bad on a test

Shes a great professor but tbh its her tests that are hard because the studying material is all over the place. So, when it comes down to the test you its hard to memorize all the various links and PP slides. She would be an easy professor only if she had made a study guide that is specific to the test. Also, the labs are easy!

I took her for bio 101 and bio 102. As a biology major, she made biology more interesting than I anticipated. Made lectures and lab easy to understand. I struggled a little more in bio 102 but i personally was not putting the effort in i should have to receive a better grade. You have to study a little more than the study guide and shes funny

BIO 101 is hard in general. Professor Shaffer was really nice and made class interesting. There is a quiz at the beginning of every lab, but she would tell you what would be on it the class before. The lectures are long but she tries to make it understandable using imaging and videos.

She's an easy grader and allows for one exam and lab to be dropped at the end of the semester. She's really nice and there isn't much work. Labs are relatively easy but can be quite long. Class participation is a small assignment. The textbook and other materials are optional and not worth getting.

Prof. was great, she was helpful in making sure that every question was answered and amazing at study reviews! There isn't much of a homework load, as long as you study! One thing though was that the study guides did not match the tests so make sure to ask what the main study objectives are.

Probably the easiest and most insightful class I've had in my entire time at NOVA. She gave the option to either show up to class and get attendance points, or not show up but have the assignments weighted a bit heavier. She made concepts easy to understand, and we would have a game at the end of every chapter to review. Really caring prof.

She explains everything really well and always answers any questions. The study guides tell you exactly whats gonna be on the test all you need to do is study them and pay attention during lectures, she also provides practice quizzes so that you can check your knowledge

Overall a very caring and knowledgeable professor. She wants everyone to do well, but you need to approach her yourself if you are struggling. She also seeks participation in lecture a lot which can make a quieter class really tiring - you aren't graded on it though. Grading is clearly laid out in syllabus. Not difficult if you stay engaged!

Took Professor Shaffer's hybrid course & she is overall a great professor! Her lectures include bad biology humor (in a good way), she actually teaches instead of reading slides and gives participation points + extra credit. She has some questionable handwriting (respectfully) but the study guides are super helpful. Study those and you'll pass!

This course was lecture heavy and the slides were long. She makes it a point to emphasize the topics that are going to be on the tests. She tries to help you retain the information as much as possible. I appreciated how the study guides were basically the tests. Please do them. They're incredibly helpful, especially the frq portion.
