I took Survey of Bio and it was pretty easy. Go to the labs and do that work, study for the tests and try to pass them. There is minimal work besides 2 papers. She kept me awake, usually by telling jokes. It was a good class.
Prof Sipes is the easiest Bio prof I have ever had. I recommend everyone to take her class. She is very clear in what she teaches, and trys to incorporate humor into lessons that would otherwise be boring. Her quizes and labs are easy.
tough one!!
This lady is great. She has a great sense of humor and is helpful. Definately recommend her for anyone. However, you must read, study and use CD that comes with the book to get a good grade on her tests. You must also pay attention in class and take good notes even though you don't need them to study with!
Good person, but should not be teaching
Dr. Sipes is kick a$$. I loved her class. She made everything so fun and interesting. Her classes are hard though. You have to study a lot. Read the book, your notes, and the book CD is helpful. Also use the handout she gives. Her lab practicals are kinda hard, but she's always there to help. She is awesome awesome awesome. I recommend her 100%.
Excellent teacher! She lets the students explore on their own and bring the research and knowledge to the class. I would definitely recommend taking this class with her!
This class was easy basically because a different student gave a presentation every class, so it was mainly taught by the student. All exams where essay form, she gives you a topic, you take the exam home, and bring it back completed. My only problem is that I think she thinks theres no such think as an "A".
She is a great teacher. You can tell she knows her stuff. Very funny and helpful, although tests are hard if you dont read the book. I highly recommend her.
Professor Sipes is awesome! she's a great teacher and her labs are sooo much fun. true you have to read the book and go over everything for test, but if you do you will not be disappointed.
i would def not reccomend this teacher to anyone who has not taken Survey first, she expects you to know what shes talking about without even explaining it, i think she jokes more then really teaches and i think really did'nt prepare you for whats on her test.
This class is very hard be sure you read the text before you go to lecture, if you dont you will have no idea what she is talking about, the first week she will lecture on getting out of the class because everybody fails it, o and if you like professors that feed off of class clowns she is the one, she is a class clown herself!
Material for this class is challenging, but Dr. Sipes is the best science teacher I have ever had. She is an excellent lecturer - entertaining and engaging. Got an A but had to work for it.
Sipes clas is vry hard. Her lectures are well organized but her tests are ridiculously hard and when you ask her a ? she says MAYBE every time. On the tests: All the ?s asked are multiple choice but all the answers in each question are so similar that you have to pick the best one, which is usually what is asked of you on the tst: Pick the best one
She is a great science teacher. Excellent (though challenging) test writer. Knows her stuff. She does joke around plenty, so if you don't pay attention in class as a rule don't bother taking any of hers, because you need to be engaged to be prepared enough for the tests.
She is the most challenging teacher I have had yet! she does not hand you the information, expects you to do well, but not at all surprised by the lack of effort people put into it. tests are extremely difficult. but make it past the drop date, do well, and spend lots and lots of time reading and asking questions on the web compliment given w/the b
Professor Sipes is a good person but I feel like she doesn't really care that everyone fails her class. She likes to watch you suffer and go down hard. She uses a question bank for her exams and I feel it's because she doesn't want to use the time to write a reasonable exam herself. This class was a nightmare!
She has a great personality, and she explains things so well that even a 4 year old could understand it. However, she is a horrible teacher. Nothing she explains helps you on the incredibly hard tests that she gives. She enjoys watching people fail, and she never gives you a definite answer for you questions.
If you attended this class, didn't listen, and didn't ask any questions, you probably failed. Stop trying to blame it on Sipes. I got an A. I am not an A student, I just came to class, and actually paid attention. There were only about three people in my class who actually asked questions about things that confused them. They all did well.
she is a great teacher, but your grade will rest in your own hands, how much do you want to study? she isnt easy but you will learn, its just a lot of work! I would take her again!
Great teacher, kind of hard but great quality lessons. It won't be easy but you will learn a lot. Be ready to STUDY
very smart teacher, test are hard though. Be prepared to study your butt off but you will learn a lot. Overall good teacher.
She does not have a vocation or passion for teachng. I would recommend any other proferssor.
Awesome teacher. Clarity and enthusiasm are important aspects when it comes to lectures and she displays both. I truly enjoyed this class and will be taking Bio 1 with her next semester.
NOT A SOFTBALL CLASS! Dr. Sipes is a thought provoking Socratic style teacher. While she never gives you the answer outright if you pay attention she will lead you to the answer through questioning. The book and ALL of the online masteringbio is MANDITORY if you want to pass. I came out of this class with a great respect for bio and DR. Sipes.
this teacher is not good at all. she is the kind of teacher that likes to give the hardest version possible of the exam. u need to read the chapters many times before an exam because her exams are very hard the lectures are fun and informative but useless at the time of the exam you are on your own and she really doesnt care about you.
I had a hard time getting into her lectures. Reading the book is the only way I learned. I'm an 'A' student and became happy with a 'C' in her class. I did like her and her humor, but not the lectures.
Awesome Teacher.. Encourages you to use your mind to find the answers, not forcing you to dig through your textbook and spit out retained info
This professor has the uncanny ability of driving home even the hardest topics with minimal effort on behalf of the student, and in fact does so effortlessly.I think that the anyone willing to use their minds AND their textbook will truly enjoy her class and succeed in it!
This professor is very difficult. There is a lot of reading in the text. There are not any questions on the test that directly relate to the lectures in class. You must use the mastering biology website to understand some of her lectures. She takes points off if you are late or absent. It seems that she takes pleasure in watching people fail.C if lucky
She seemed a bit quirky at first, then let her true colors show. Lectures are BORING! Labs are BORING! she gives a study giude before each section then none of the information on the study guide is on the test. It is a lecture class and she kills for being late of absent or not paying attention. Find another professor for this course.
I always hated science, but once I took Dr.Sipes class I've found a passion for science I never knew I had. She is a great professor and knows the subject well and makes it interesting. LOVE HER!!! I definately recommend her!
The students on here that say here study guides don't relate to the exams are completely of point in my opinion. I used only the study guide and bio book to study for exams and aced every one of them. DR. Sipes will stay after to answer any questions one may have. She has been teaching for many years and this shows through in her classes. A+
This was not a easy A class by any means. Yet I was still able to EARN an A, even though I did come in late here and there and missed 2 days. I thought she was an awesome teacher! She really helped make sense of the material. Yes I had to read but isn't that what you do in school?
This is not an easy class. You actually have to work. And you need to buy the book. That being said Dr. Sipes is great. You have to learn, not just skate by and barely study.
This professor in my opinion likes to see people fail. The first day she said to our class half of you will have to drop this course, and out of the half that is left 2/3 of you will fail. And I was smart enough to drop the course and take it with someone who actually enjoys teaching instead of 'intimidating' their students.
Dr. Sipes is one of the highest caliber Prof. at PSC. Some comments on here say she threatens her students.. They can't be more wrong! BSC 1010 is Bio I, which to many students sounds like an easy course, but it is a serious class designed for science majors. Take "Survey" if you want an intro course. Sipes = Bio GOD +caring, helpful, and funny.
I worked my ass off in her class and didn't do good at all. Maybe your right, it's probably my fault...but when you get a teacher who barely who wants to help you or offers a study group or free class for review and knows the material is hard doesn't allow a second chance to prevent your grade for getting worse is not a good teacher at all.
Dr. Sipes is a wonderful and knowledgeable professor. Her genuine enthusiasm in Biology is apparent in the way she draws the classroom's interest. Easily my favorite female professor at PSC!
Come to class, read the book, use the online study material. Sipes is more than willing to help you understand the material - you just have to be interested in learning the material. She makes biology interesting and breaks down difficult topics into fun analogies. Class is much better when everyone comes ready to discuss the topic.
Professor Sipes is an incredibly difficult teacher. She warns students the first week, constantly, that you must basically not have a life, and not be taking any other difficult or time consuming classes alongside hers. The reason for this is because she does not teach. I had a better understanding of the material prior to my attendance to class.
Sipes is a great person but her teaching methods aren't for everyone. I feel when the class averages on tests are D's & F's its not just the students fault. Even if you read the chapters it wont guarantee anything. I studied 24/7 and ended dropping. PS. If you are in Computer Science major don't t take her, She tells the class most CS majors fail.
She is one of the worst professors I've ever had! She doesn't teach whats on her test, and her teaching method is horrible!
Sipes was a horrible teacher. It seemed like she wanted us to fail. She simply stated that 1/2 the class would drop and after that 2/3 would fail. I worked my butt off to get a D+?! She was not helpful with answering ANY questions. In my opinion her pride to herself is worth more than her students learning.
This is not an easy class. You really need to know everything in the book for tests. She takes what you learn in the book and then asks you to use that knowledge to solve problems on the test. MUST read book! Lecture is for discussing what was learned in the book and applying it. Got a B because I didn't study for lab test. Great teacher!!!
She is not an easy A. Her class is challenging and you have to STUDY. But her class is very enjoyable! She is very sweet and always helpful during labs and class. Arguably one of the best teachers on campus. Always do the online portion because it's worth a whole letter grade and it's easy anyway! Use the online part to study along with your notes!
She is a great teacher. She definitely loves what she teaches and doesn't mind helping you. The labs are great and fairly easy. You WILL NEED TO READ. Also, do the connect online, it helps in the long run to bring your grade up. THIS IS NOT A SLACK-OFF CLASS. You will need to study outside of class.
Dr. Kindel is one of a kind. She shot us with a nerf gun to help teach her lesson. This class is tough and you do have to work hard to get the best grade possible, but she is there if you're needing additional help or clarification. She is very understanding and real. Science isn't the subject for me, but I've enjoyed the class so far.
She was helpful (like when you need to see what you did wrong on an exam), but she is very unclear in her lectures. You have to guess what will be on the exams because the "study guides" are laughable and her lectures are so boring. You need the textbook. Honestly, you're better off going to another bio professor.
She's a great person over all, she's just very confusing in her lectures. I recommend going to class everyday, I didn't and failed... Ask questions, pay attention, AND DO THE CONNECT!
Dr. Sipes is a good professor, but not at all easy. Pros: she made it interesting. The lectures were not boring & she kept the class engaged. Most of the labs were kind of fun. She has a good sense of humor. Cons: Exams are extremely difficult no matter how much you study. I failed a few exams that I studied really hard for. Prepare for hard work.
Professor Sipes' Survey of Biology was well worth taking. Sipes does her best to keep each lecture entertaining, and is quite sarcastic yet professional with the students. She goes above and beyond to answer any questions you may have to better help your understanding. Highly recommend investing in the online (or Connect) access to study.
I'm currently taking surveys to biology and I don't find the class to be difficult. She makes the material more interesting, and I'm not the best in science. Pay attention in class, attend every lab because she gives short quizzes and use your study guide and you'll be ok. I've done well on every exam so far. She's a cool professor trust me!
She is funny and the class is not hard as long as you pay attention in class. Take notes and go to the labs, they are helpful to study for the test.
Really knows her stuff. She will help you if you ask. Tries to engage class by picking students to answer. She's pretty funny too. Absolutely loved her class. Didn't know if online material was required, apparently it was. Don't be late! Read read read! Tests are quite hard. You've got to understand the mat. to get the question. Would take again.
This is a tough class & if you want to pass you really need to work for it, something she is quick to mention during the first week. I found the best method to understanding the material was by reading the textbook & taking notes prior to when she would cover the material in her lectures. Her lectures were a bit lacking so reading the book is key.
She doesn't use powerpoints, reading text book will help. Lectures are not the best!
This class is very tough, but I wouldn't completely blame her. The material is very hard to grasp. She does not really teach what you need to know for exams, she just skims the surface. YOU MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK! I only passed because I studied the book. I am a straight A student but her class made me work HARD for my grade. Final was very easy.
WOW! One of the best teachers I've ever had the experience of having at PSC. Such a great teacher. You can tell she really loves her job. She will teach you everything you need to pass her test. She makes class fun, enjoyable and motivates you to participate in class.
This class was okay, I passed with D not to please. It's very hard material, and I would recommend if you fail the test or do not get the grade you wanted, go talk to her. I honestly would probably take a different teacher if I had to retake the course.
She goes over everything on the tests so just study and participate in class. This class was difficult for me because I'm a business major.
Dedicated, knowledgeable, and caring. Her lectures were informative and took up all of class time. Labs were usually short and easy. Don't skip labs, attendance is for a grade. Everything was direct and any resources you needed were at your fingertips. You can get away with minimal effort like I did but it's a class worth a little bit more work.
Dr Sipes is by far the best bio professor there is in Polk State! She believes in each one of her students! Emails that back within the hour! Answers all questions! Doesnt make you feel dumb! Empowers you to do better! Treats all her students with respect! Participate in class. Read b4 class. Study and put forth the effort and its u will get A-B
What an amazing teacher! You wish you could have her as all of your professors! If you put forth the effort, come to all classes, read do hw and labs and study before class it will be an easy a you just need to put forth the effort! Also she has officers hours even if you need to talk! She actually genuinely cares about everyone of her students!
It seemed like Dr. Sipes was trying to make most of the class fail or drop. When the class average on the second test is a 48 there's obviously something wrong. Do not recommend if you're trying to get a good grade in principles 1.
Wow, professor Sipes probably was my hardest professor I have ever taken. I rated her a 5 because I appreciate her enthusiasm, she is super passionate for what she does, and she is willing to talk to you and give you options on what you should do to pass the class. Yes it is a very hard class but just work hard. She's also funny!
Professor Sipes made this class very difficult. She would post the power point "notes" DAYS after the class, and they would have nothing on them except photos and occasionally descriptions. It was impossible to take notes in class, and had most of my class purchase the wrong volume of textbook and waste over $100. I wouldn't suggest this class.
Prof Sipes is a very sweet lady who clearly loves what she does! She is always enthusiastic during class and that was important to me. She is very knowledgeable on the material she teaches, yet is very good about allowing students to work things out and think for themselves about certain topics. The classes are always interactive and labs are fun.
Professor Sipes was overall a very nice teacher. However, the organization of her lectures will cause you not to pass, or at least not with the grade you intend to. You may have to teach yourself a lot of the material, and the Section worksheets don't help whatsoever.
This class isnt easy, and very difficult to get an A, or even pass at all. The way to pass this class is to read THE BOOK and take very good notes in class. I found that taking the quizzes in the back of the chapter worked very well for me. Also study the possible essay questions, I quickly found that if you know that, youll do well on the exams.
This class was very confusing. She teaches as if you should already know what youre in her class to learn.
She is frustrating. I took BSC1010C before this class and that was a much easier class for me. Some of the test questions are incredibly specific, SO much work is required for this class, and she does not teach well. If I did not already have learned most of this stuff already, it would be SUCH a difficult class to take. Do not recommend.
Professor Sipes is great! I enjoy gong to her class, we learn so much, and she cares about all of her students.
Professor Sipes was amazing! I enjoyed coming to her class each week. She worked hard to plan fun labs and activities for students. She personally knew everyone and was funny. Glad I had her as my last teacher at Polk State College.
Professor Sipes is a wonderful instructor. Although her lectures were very information heavy, she does her best to explain the material to the fullest extent. In order to pass, you MUST study outside of class. Principals of Bio I is extremely informative and requires lots of outside attention. Professor Sipes does her job very well in class.
Great professor, great lectures, and great class overall. Coming from a math student, science was not always my strongest subject but she makes it hard to not love it. You just have to study, and if you do, then there is no way you cannot pass the class! Wish she teached BSC1020 :(
I loved this class! I was scared to take my first class w/ a lab, but she made it easy. Organized Canvas, lots of opportunities to improve your grade, few discussion posts, same format every week, 5 one page essays that are super easy. Just read your book and complete all the assignments and you are all good to go! She is so fun in class, too!
Very organized professor and she does her best to make sure everyone gets through ok in this tough course. Worst part is that there is a lot of reading involved, and some of the lectures drag.
she was a very bad teacher. everything taught is through labs however there are vocabulary and other stuff on the test that she expect us to know. however it will not be taught even in the text book.
I usually do very well in science, but it was hard trying to learn with the way she teaches. This class is also very test heavy. Also, if you take this class, I recommend actually reading the online textbook before doing the homework assignments.
This is the most difficult course I have ever taken, and I was previously in IB. The workload is outrageous, up to 10 assignments a day almost every day (highest question count around 240). I've been called "pitiful" on more than 1 occasion. She expects the class to already know the subject. Very difficult to pass this class; labs are 3 hours long.
This class is hard, but I'm not a STEM student. I finished with an A, but I had to work very very hard for it. Professor is very nice, but get ready to read.
Very good and caring, she understands and will extend due date, the class is difficult but if you know how to study well passing will be a breeze. weekly homework's and simple labs just be ready to work and learn!
The professor's notes and lectures did not match up to any of the tests. She expected us to know everything coming into the class and sometimes had to google answers to our questions because she didn't know the info. She called us names like pitiful, stupid, or mentally challenged on a daily basis. She also shot me with a nerf gun during a lesson.
Large amount of busywork, unorganized lectures and unclear unit structure that makes it hard to prepare for what actually impacts your grade (quizzes and tests).
I don't know why Professor Sipes ratings are so low. She is sarcastic and funny, maybe why some think she insulted them. Yes, this is a biology course so yes, you have to do your work and read the textbook. There are a lot of assignments, but none that will take you more than 30 minutes and they will all help you learn. Overall, great professor.
Professor Sipes is one of my favorite professors I've had in a while. She is super passionate about what she teaches and it shows through the labs and dedication to helping her students succeed. She is able to joke around and keep class moving with her wit and she may even shoot you with a nerf gun lol. Overall amazing and highly recommend!
Workload is assigned as if you have no other classes. Lectures do not help with content assigned. Tests feel completely different from the content gone over. Professor is passionate about the subject and was overall nice enough.
Professor Sipes is great! She's definitely not a boring professor but the workload is a lot. If you have a busy schedule I would not recommend taking this class. It requires a lot of time and attention and exams weigh heavily on your grade so be prepared to study a lot. The homework only takes your grade up half a point, the exams matter the most.
