Tests are somewhat difficult, HOWEVER, you get to take an 8.5 x 11 cheat sheet with as much info as you want on it into every test. Also the lowest test was dropped (which included the final as a possibility to drop). Very energetic professor who really wants her students to do well.
OMD-I am madly in love with Professor Stearns. I don't know if she's into women, but I don't care because my love would go unrequited either way. Prof. Stearns is an amazing lecturer. She doesn't miss a beat, she's fifty beats ahead but not ahead of you, and enough to keep you awake for her entire morning class. She's funny, unbiased, and brilliant
Prof Stearns is great. She is clear, funny, and while the tests are a little tricky, you are allowed a cheatsheet and she will drop the lowest one (i didn't even have to go to the final) If you put in some work on your cheat sheet it's hard not to do well. While attendance isn't mandatory - you should go!
She is great. attendance is not mandatory, but she makes things so clear, gives you lecture outlines, and is engaging - def go. tests are a little tricky, but with an entire sheet of "memory card" they are totally do able. Put in some time on your cheatsheet and you should do well. (she also drops the lowest test - including the final)
Tests are easy, but her grading scale might screw you. I averaged an A- on all for exams, so I thought I was fine and decided not to take the final (she only counts 3 of 4 tests). Grades came out and I had a B+; I emailed her and she said that even though my tests averaged an A-, I had not garnered enough points according to HER point scale.
Farely easy class with tests that are straight from notes and the book. Teacher is a nice lady who is willing to help you if you have problems. Covers a lot of interesting material, I recommend it.
Interesting material, smart prof. Lectures not mandatory, tests come from textbook and are doable w/cheat sheet. Do well on first three tests so you dont have to take the final. Stearns is very nice and very smart but lectures can get a bit boring, especially at 8:50. Still, a great intro to psych. Strongly recommended.
Would not recommend this class, fairly easy I suppose. Very dry; lectures come straight from outlines and are largely useless. Work hard on your cheat sheet and cover the learning objectives and you'll be fine. But get a head start on the learning objectives if you want to do well, long chapter and almost everything in them is covered.
Attendance is not mandatory. You could get an easy A just following the learning objectives and reading the book like I did. Study in advance and spend time on your cheat sheet. Stearns is very enthusiastic even at 8:50. Her lectures and examples help a lot but just mirror the book. Very nice and helpful overall. I'd recommend this class!
Absolutely fantastic professor. Really tries hard to engage the class, and you can tell she loves what she is doing. Only 3 exams and then 1 final, all of which pretty much come straight out of the textbook. Psych majors would be CRAZY not to take her.
Worthless professor and class. Fairly easy with four tests. However, she is a horrible professor. Georgetown would be making a good decision to fire her.
Enthusiastic enough to keep me awake at 8:50. Reading the text book is helpful but not mandatory. Her lectures go over the text book material and she elaborates with real life examples. 3 midterms and 1 final, you can drop 1/not take 1 (including the final), and you can have a cheat sheet with anything you want on it for each exam.
I really loved this class! She's so energetic and interesting-- I always went to class even though you really don't have to if you read the textbook carefully. It's also easy to get an A if you study- 3 tests and a final with one-page cheat sheets (and you don't have to take the final if you have an A!)
Stearns is SO boring when she lectures, and she actually doesn't know what she's talking about. When people ask questions she goes around the answer and doesn't really say anything important. If you read all the material, you'll do fine. but if you like psych, definitely take someone else.
Great lector. Read the book, follow the outline in class, and GO TO CLASS. An 8:50 is difficult, but she makes the lectures worth it. Relatively easy midterms (with a memory sheet) and a final with no essay.
Boring lectures. Truly no need to go to class...I went the first half and not the second and my grades actually improved. 4 tests including a final make up 100% of the grade, and you get to drop one. Study the book hard, make detailed cheat sheets and you won't have a problem getting an A
Excellent professor. Every class is stimulating and Professor Stearns' energy and enthusiasm make the effort of getting up for an 8:50 class totally worth it. Tests go off class material and textbook but are very fair. Plus the allowed memory sheet really helps during the test. Highly recommend for the intro to psych course.
Amazing professor! I can't stand waking up for early classes, but this class was worth it. She takes a genuine interest in her students' success. Her lectures are clear and engaging, and exams are reasonable - you can use a memory card and the lowest grade drops.
General Psych with Stearns was a fun experience and you could definitely tell that she knew her stuff. She specializes in social psychology. The class itself (4 tests with lowest grade dropped which could include the final) was doable. However, if you don't catch up on the textbook readings before the exams, you will be doomed to put it lightly.
cheat sheet (one front page of ANYTHING YOU CAN FIT ON IT). Do make sure you review and know the material. Essays are very in depth and require a lot of knowledge on the material. Gives three options for essays and you choose one. 50 multiple choice questions. drops lowest exam (can be final) Final is all mul choice
Class is interesting. You don't really have to go though because tests are based on textbook material (and mostly multiple choice). Read the text the nights before a test and make a really detailed cheat sheet (you can bring it with you into the test).
Easy A if you put in the time to make a detailed memory card (which you can use on the test) and buy the optional study guide (the practice questions are like what you can expect on her tests). 3 of 4 tests count (so you can drop the final). Interesting class with a professor who truly cares about what she's teaching.
I went into this class because I love Psychology and I wanted a challenge for my Psych class. However, this class was much more than a challenge. It was one of my hardest class, and I honestly thought that it would have been easier. I had taken AP Psych senior year and although I had remembered stuff this class is really intense. Cheat sheet though
Beware!! Stearns is NOT EASY! I thought this class would be an easy A, it is far from it. So much reading. Mult choice part of her exams are ok if you study hard but the essays are impossible; she takes off points for everything. Not worth the 8am struggle
NOT AN EASY A. Lectures are pointless, you have to study hard from the book. Tests are multiple choice with one essay, but the essays are impossible, she is very picky. I am a business student and just took this to fulfill my requirement, DO NOT DO IT, only take this class if psychology interests you and you plan on majoring in it.
I agree with the last two posters. I took this class (8 am, mind you) assuming it would be a walk in the park. You have to study a ton for the tests, and I got 6/10s on all the essays. When the tests are out of 100 points, you can hardly get any multiple choice questions wrong if you want an A. She is nice, I guess, but is never on campus to meet.
don't take. you have to study far in advance to do well, which is not worth it for those who just want to get done with the social science requirement. there are many other professors who are easier. i suppose she is nice, but she grades so hard on the essays, you basically have to ace the rest of the test
She is a verryyy interesting professor. Her sense of humor adds a sense of fun spirit to the class and makes psychology more interesting. it is an easy A if you prepare from the study guide and you dnt have to do the final which is nice. 8 am sucks but a cheat sheet on tests. highly recommended
NOTTT AN EASY A. She is a very good professor, but you need to spend a lot of time studying/reviewing to do well. You think you know the material and still get B's. You learn a lot though. Stearns doesn't round up your grade so it kinda sucks, but she's a good prof.
HARD ESSAYS. never got above a 5/10 on mine...nice prof, always very chirpy and happy...but agreed. the test comes from the book...but its A LOT of studying...i tried studying the day b4 b/c i have a lot of work to do....def had to pull almost all nighters. SOOO MUCH INFOOO in so little time. but u do get a cheat sheet! 8am classes are too early..
This is the worst professor I've had so far in Georgetown. You would think that 4 tests and the lowest grade is dropped is a good idea but think about it twice because for each test there's a ridiculous amount of material to study. If you are not a psych major trust me and DO NOT take this class. If you do, you will regret it.
ok, you actually HAVE to put a lot of studying far in advance for an A. there is far too much material to cram. the perks: she drops the lowest grade, you get a cheat sheet, and attendance isn't mandatory. BUT read every line of the book. the exam questions are straight forward, so just know the material. USE the practice book, exams are similar
Prof. Stearns is clear when explaining concepts, and she's extremely upbeat for an 8AM class. I've only showed up to class on exam days and the first couple of weeks. Attendance is not necessary to do well. Just thoroughly read the textbook, make sure you understand, and make a detailed cheat sheet. I received an A.
She is a really nice lady and knows what she's talking about. It's not hard to pay attention to her lectures, she is interesting and upbeat. She lets you use a cheat sheet on the test, but you still have to study in order to receive a good grade.
By far one of the most enthusiastic professors I've ever had! Seems to actually enjoy lecturing at 8 AM. Even though attendance wasn't mandatory (which is honestly why I took an 8 AM), I ended up going bc she's so funny and approachable. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Tests from text, and it's 500x easier if you've read. Almost impossible if not.
Deb is great, she knows what she's talking about (even at 8am when no one cares). That being said, her class is by no means mandatory as you'll still have to read the entire text book to prepare for exams. Tests are MCessay, and are hard if you don't fill out and memorize her chapter outlines. But hey, at least you'll get a cheat sheet!!
Great professor but hard class. Had her for Psychology of Close Relationships seminar. Class was so interesting but a lot of work. There's 3 primary psyc research paper readings for every class as well as a reflection response (1 page double-spaced) which she does not grade easily. Also unclear in grading, so we were surprised when we got them back
Deborah Sterns is the hidden crown jewel of Georgetown University. She is extremely passionate about the material which is great because its all about sex, and she does a good job of making things calm, interesting, and not-awkward. She is truly a once-in-a-lifetime professor. By no means an easy grader, but she is so worth it. TAKE HER CLASS!
Hot Topics is the BEST class I've taken at Georgetown! Discussions based on the readings, usually 1-2 psychological studies, and topics range from sex ed, debates on the G-spot, fetishes, consent, bdsm, and beyond. No midterm or final, just 2 projects. Stearns is an absolute genius (and she brings cookies). You'll wake up excited to get to class.
The only class I have ever regretted taking :/ There is SO much work and she expects a lot for a Gen Psych class. There is a quiz before class every day and a reading quiz in class every single day. Miss class and your grade will suffer. 4 tests, she drops the lowest, but they're SO hard. Takes me WEEKS to study and I still barely pass. Don't take!
Professor Stearns is a sweet lady, but she does a reverse classroom style for teaching. You need to do tons of work outside of class (read the textbook, watch lecture videos, do online activities, do reading quizzes), and honestly class is a waste of time. But, she makes class mandatory by giving you quizzes every day in class. Not my fav.
I have never regretted taking a class more than this one. I did not like the teaching style at all and I usually really love psychology. Class was a waste of time but it was mandatory because of a quiz at the beginning of every class for attendance. She assigns way too much work and grades the essays too harshly. Will never recommend.
She is a nice woman and brings snacks, but my experience in her class has ruined my chances of ever taking a psyc class again. The tests were very hard and there is a TON of work outside of class. She grades papers way too harshly and the grade you get doesn't match up to the feedback or rubric she uses. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Very unclear with her expectations for coursework. Tough grader but unclear about ways to improve. Does not lecture in class and everyone has to teach themselves from the book. Class material is fun, but she is not a good teacher and I have not learned much.
I would definitely avoid this professor - very unclear with expectations on assignments and was a tough grader. Comments were often repetitive and unhelpful as far as how to improve in the future. Written 1-2 page responses required for every class, took until the end of the semester to be graded so there was no chance to course correct.
Stearns uses a reverse classroom where you learn before class and then do examples in class. I was not a fan, and did not enjoy class. She tried too hard to use "hip" examples. There were group quizzes before class each day with no way of knowing who did the work. The exams were annoyingly difficult. I would try another intro psych teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Worst class I've taken at Georgetown. There are two major problems with the class: too much work & you learn very little. She assigned 22(!) short papers & then only graded 8 by the end of the semester. She grades so slowly & has vague rubrics. The class was discussion based, but there was no structure to the discussions.
Worst class I have taken at Georgetown, waste of tuition (& I'm saying this having done well so far). She's sweet, but tests are insanely hard on tiny details. Took forever to grade. You have to teach yourself the book and group activities in class are a waste of time. Also Theories of Personality is very similar to gen psych - didnt learn much.
Professor Stearns was a horrible professor. She takes months to grade tests, papers, and other assignments. She gives unclear expectations for exams and takes off many points for simple mistakes. Her lectures are pointless because the entire test is solely based on the textbook. The few things she explains in class are poorly explained. Don't take.
Professor Stearns taught me absolutely nothing about the Theories of Personality. She spends most of her time assembling snack baskets instead of actually grading assignments or explaining material. A complete waste of Georgetown tuition. Incredibly disappointed.
Professor Stearns has yet to grade the essay portion of our test on February 11. That tells you everything you need to know about her - expects you to work for up to 9 hours a week for a 100-level psych class while she makes 2-slide PowerPoints and splits you off in groups for the rest of the class. I love psych but am so disappointed - do not take
I HATED THIS COURSE, worst psych class ever. The exams were impossible even though I would study 9+ hours per week. sweet lady -she is nice, brings snacks, but lectures are pointless, group work most of the time. Majority of the time doesn't teach the material. AVOID! This is not her strength as she picked it up from a prof who was on medical leave
Professor Stearns is a powerhouse. Clearly wicked smart and incredibly knowledgeable in her field. She expects her students to engage with the material and emphasizes collaboration with peers. She's an actual ray of sunshine and is the most caring professor I've ever had. She'd do anything for her students. Bakes and sends amazing cookies :)
Professor Stearns is so kind and compassionate, which is incredibly important in the situation we're all in. The class discussions and activities really help you learn the material well and are interesting and fun too. She's really considerate and flexible with deadlines etc. Her tests are definitely fair if you keep up with the reading and class
cannot stress this enough DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS PROF. Normally I ignore comments like that but I literally made this account for this. I normally get As in my psych classes- it is IMPOSSIBLE to feel confident about this course: doesnt grade anything, super subjective, looks to take as many points off possible. do. not. take.
Dont be fooled just bc she seems nice & the topic is interesting!!! It feels impossible to do well in this class since the grading criteria is so subjective. She makes it seems like she wants you to learn but also grades so hardly. She thinks that a B+ is a great grade. Not sure why a professor wouldn't want her students to do well
The structure of the class is terrible. Everything seems great until you realize you have 0 clue what your grade is & that she goes out of her way to take points off of for no reason. ESPECIALLY during a pandemic her classes are the worst- she'll ask you how you're feeling, then get an attitude if you ask her to be a little more flexible
not worth it just seriously take any other psych class if you want to save your sanity & gpa
Prof Stearns is the shining light at GU. She is so sweet, kind, and passionate about the material she teaches. She is always open to extensions and wants the best for her students (esp during the pandemic). But, she will make you WORK for it. Lots of reading and LOTS of studying to maybe get a B+ in her class. A tough grader but absolutely worth it
Although she is very caring and clearly passionate about her work, my class with Prof. Stearns was so disorganized and frustrating. The grading system is confusing, and she takes forever to grade any tests or assignments, so you have no idea where you stand. Do yourself and your GPA a favor and skip this class.
DO NOT TAKE. Lots of reading, and then she didn't actually teach us anything herself in class -- just had us have debates. Very hypocritical -- demanded 110% from us with no leniency, but did not respond to a SINGLE email all semester and didn't grade a single exam or quiz until 3 days before the final exam. Mess.
She is really nice and definitely passionate about her topic, but as it regards to assignments, I felt as though she was unclear about expectations and had us memorize a ridiculous amount of content (even for a college-level course). I love this topic but didn't love this course, unfortunately.
Prof Stearns is an amazing professor! She truly cares about her students and wants you to be successful. Readings can be a little bit long for each class but are definitely manageable. Short, easy reading quizzes before each class. Lot of individual learning with class time used to ask questions and go over confusing concepts.
this class was a MESS we didnt get any grades until the last week - even tho someone asked every single lecture. the tests were unnecessarily hard asking for specific details from the textbook. basically just reviewed the theories covered in intro again. wish i hadn't wasted an elective on this class. heard she's better in seminars tho
DO NOT TAKE DEBORAH STEARNS. 3 Tests determine grade and a short paper. She doesnt curve tests and the questions are very specific topics we dont cover in class. Not very helpful during office hours and answers questions with more questions. 0/10 would not recommend.
Stearns is a good human being. She is a horrible teacher. You won't understand the classes unless you do the homework. Even better the homework is absurd. She acts like this class is the only one you're taking. THE WORST PART is the exams. They are extremely difficult and impossible to study for so good luck. Very nice lady, not a nice teacher.
Do not take her. 3 tests she calls "quests" make up your grade and the TA grades one short paper. Tests on stuff we didn't even cover in class. You have to teach yourself the material from readings and lecture videos for HW which was not conducive to my learning style. If you aren't extremely and uniquely disciplined, you won't do well
This was one of the weirdest classes I've ever taken. In class you don't learn anything, we only answered multiple choice questions that were related to the readings we had done at home. She doesn't count attendance, but a chunk of the grade was based on what people in you "group" rated you based on your team activity. Odd class.
Professor Stearns is a nice person, but I would not recommend her class. Lectures were fine, but the tests were incredibly hard and specific. If you do not have a photographic memory you will struggle. The participation and essay were both graded on a really non objective basis.
I liked prof Stearns and her class however objectively she is a hard prof to like and a tough grader
never teaches, expects us to learn everything from the textbooks
Manageable readings, short quizzes before class, 4 exams (3 midterms and a cumulative final). multiple choice exams with a cheat sheet allowed, but not easy. She finds the most random, specific details hidden in the readings to quiz on (things you wouldn't think to write on the sheet). Hard to do well, but she's great. brings cookies and caring.
Hard to do well in the course if you don't read the textbook and take meticulous notes. Lectures were mostly just answering questions to understand general concepts and weren't helpful. Cheat sheet on exams is helpful but the exams cover random details. Participation grade is based on your teammates ratings and not helpful on the paper.
Stearns is a nice lady but the way the class was set up was horrible. Before every single class you have to read and take detailed notes on the textbook and do a timed online quiz. In class she does not lecture, only asks multiple choice questions for 75 minutes. The tests aren't curved and are on random specific details from the textbook.
Don't take this class unless you have to. Insane amount of work as reading and taking good notes on the textbook is absolutely necessary. Classes are a waste of time- she does unhelpful multiple choice questions the whole time. Not interesting whatsoever. Exams are difficult but you get a sheet of paper with as many notes as you can fit.
Professor Stearns is very caring, accessible, and knowledgeable. However, there is way too much reading required for each class. You have to buy an online textbook which costs around $80. Attending class was not mandatory as we only did practice questions, which were not very helpful anyways.
Was super excited to take psych and I hated this class. Tests are nothing like the readings and lectures are so boring where you just do multiple choice questions as a class (there's never actually anything being taught). Quiz before every class and tons of reading. Do not take.
Nice lady. I feel like the main issue with the course is that our homework and in class exercises/lectures are not translating well to the exams. You get a cheat sheet on the exams, but still be prepared to bomb them. You have to know SUPER niche information from the 50+ pages of homework you get before each class.
Professor Stearns is great in the discussion class. There are 1-2 page discussion-style essays before every class which can be hard to keep up with. She is accessible outside of class and even though she is a hard grader, she will give good advice and the large projects include ungraded drafts.
A short paper due before each class, but there are so many you can miss 1 or 2. Very nice and willing to help with assignments, asks for feedback mid-semester and actually follows through. I would take the class again.
She doesn't teach what you read in the textbook (I like this but different from some profs) so class time is small group and class-wide discussions. You won't get your papers or exams back until 5 hours before the next one is due so good luck! But she freely gives paper extensions. **Lots** of things you're graded on so they're all lower stakes
Professor Stearns sure knows the material of the course well, but is an incredibly tough grader and her in-class exercises/lectures do not translate well to the exams - if you are looking for an easy (or even, attainable) A, I do not recommend taking this class. Also, she's rather inaccessible - booked calendar, fairly unresponsive to emails.
Prof. Stearns is evidently a very nice person, but don't take her for General Psychology. The only incentive to come to class is baked goods and making sure your group mates don't hate you. Other than that, classes are uninformative and strangely ritualistic. Tests are impossible and uncurved, and the last test is a few days before the final.
I would recommend not taking her for general psych. She's sweet and makes herself available outside of class, but her lectures aren't super interesting and your group mates rate how well you participate so most of the focus is on making sure your group mates like you. Besides that the tests are incredibly difficult and the grading is TOUGH.
Hard seminars, never gets your grades back, grades a little harshly and you do a crap ton of work but you really do learn a lot and don't write 20 page research papers. Also requires long meetings for bigger assignments and assigns reflects for absolutely everything.
Professor Stearns is so nice! She's a super caring professor and really wants to see all of her students succeed. She also gives great advice if you are interested in pursuing psychology as a career.
Lectures are recorded and supposed to be watched outside of class along with insane amounts of homework and reading. In class, we only do practice questions. The trickiness of the test questions and the sheer amount of reading made this class the worst class I took all semester. Also, grades were unclear and not posted until the end of finals.
Waits until the next calendar year to even get your grades in. "Annotations" can be dense as it is a seminar course, but it is doable. Discussion is just reiterating everything you say and it kind of makes you feel stupid. To make up for what she lacks in effective pedagogy is baking treats and bringing snacks.
Super dense readings with annotations and weekly papers. Content is interesting and she constantly bakes for class, so the work is bearable, but she *does not grade on time*. Only started posting grades right before they were due for the semester, and at the moment, she hasn't even finished yet. Also quite nitpicky in her grading.
Excellent, kind person who does not do her job. You have a 1000 word essay per week for this class plus a few longer papers. On top of daily annotations submitted for the readings. I wrote 18 total essays for this class and only the first one has been graded. Classes end tomorrow. I am furious. At least the course material is interesting!
Terrible professor, inflexible and dismissive, even when I voiced concerns. Doesn't teach—expects you to learn everything yourself from the textbook. Exams are absurdly specific and unfair, with no rubrics for short answers, and she can't explain her own grading. Grading is slow and inconsistent. Worst academic experience ever. Avoid at all costs.
Stearns is kind, but unfortunately is not a good teacher and designed this class poorly. I was excited to take Theories of Personality, but how impossible it was to excel dulled my interest in the content. Expect to learn, but also unclear, delayed grading and an unmanageable load of material to study. Pick another psych class if you can.
