great teacher, easy to understand, grades easy
Took her drugs and behavior class and absolutely loved it. You actually learn a lot and its her goal to make you understand all the concepts perfectly. She definitely knows what she's talking about! She's really funny and nice and if you go to every class she'll reward you with a few extra credit opportunities
Loved her! One of best teachers at Pitt. Such a great personality. Was very understanding when I had to make up a test. All test questions from lecture notes (which she puts on course web!!). Matching, multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. Don't really have to go to class, but she makes you want to come! Very interesting material.
Debra is a very nice professor. Go to her office hours if you don't understand a concept. Study everyday. The exams are very fair. Very nice experience.
Very nice professor and pretty interesting. A lot of the material is just rote memorization, but it's not too hard. Exam questions are very similar (if not the exact same) as the ones that she puts on the weekly quizzes (BIG help when studying). She's accessible to her students and seems interested in your success. Easy class, I got an A
very clear. tests are simple enough. going to class is not mandatory whatsoever but she gives you the major points that will be on test from that section every class so it is beneficial to go. highly recommended, take her!
Lectures were fun and informative. Professor Artim was always very funny and liked to make a serous subject more easy to take. Very knowledgeable on the subject. Had some great videos.
If you need a science course, this is it. Hands down the best class ever!! You'll learn a lot from this course, especially because we're college students and you can relate to a lot of things. Study her quizzes for the test, and KNOW the material, don't just "read" it. I'm not a science person and this class was easy for me.
Dr. Artim is extremely knowledgeable and keeps the class interesting and casual. While she doesn't take attendance for every lecture, she sometimes gives extra credit for people in class on a particular day. No textbook, just powerpoints. Easy online quizzes with questions that show up on the exams. Would recommend for an easy science elective.
Prof Artim is great! The class, Drugs and Behavior, is fascinating for anyone, even people who normally don't like science. There's no textbook, just powerpoint slides, and you can get away with not going to class but the lectures are so great that you won't want to skip. She's interesting and funny! Would definitely recommend!
Artim is a great person, getting to know her in office hours is great but she is a really tough exam maker. I am a neuro major and find the material moderately easy when presented in class, but her exams are extremely tough. If you don't put your all into this class then you aren't going to get that B to pass.
Deb is great and wonderful to get to know but her exams are extremely rough. The class averages are pretty high but if you don't work for your grade then you won't pass with a B-. I spent my entire semester focused on this class and I'm a neuro major. Would not recommend if there's another professor with easier exams.
Really a great professor! She makes you feel so comfortable in the classroom and she's extremely knowledgable. A lot of people say her tests are hard, but it's a different style of class where you can't just memorize things & pass. You really have to know and understand the concepts and be able to apply them. I'd DEFINITELY take her again.
Overall Deb was a great professor. She made lectures somewhat enjoyable, even when going through dense material and every time I asked for help she was there. I thought her exams weren't too bad, but everything on the exams can be found on the slides, just a matter of applying it. Didn't need the textbook.I would definitely recommend her for Intro!
Great professor, fun class.
Had a bit of an off-putting personality in my opinion, almost like she tried too hard. She didn't have a very good grasp of the material and would frequently deflect questions that were very relevant and interesting. Lectures consisted of her reading off slides (that someone else made) and sometimes she'd even read incorrectly. I guess she's nice.
I took developmental neuroscience and neurophysiology with her, and she was a great teacher. Her classes are not difficult but I still learned a lot. She's an engaging lecturer and just an extremely nice person, very helpful, and sometimes funny. I really enjoyed taking her classes. Recommended.
I took intro neuro with Dr. Artim over the summer and she was very helpful. She's an engaging lecturer so it made the 3 hour lectures a little easier to get through. Also, she's really great outside of class - every time I asked for help she took me step by step through the issue and even helped me find research!
Reads off the powerpoints, can do well, if you take the quizzes seriously and the first four exams. don't put yourself in a position where you have to take the final. i had to take it and it was ridiculously hard. it can completely ruin your chances of boosting your grade.
Dr. Artim's lectures consist of reading off powerpoints. Some lectures it feels as if she just repeats the powerpoint but other times she goes in depth and explains the concepts she puts on her powerpoint. Four midterm exams with an optional (VERY DIFFICULT) final. She gives take home quizzes which help boost your grade.
Goes too quickly in lecture if you take notes by hand. Presents a ridiculous amount of marginally relevant facts that are very hard to memorize and turn out to be frustratingly unnecessary to memorize (lists of symptoms, etc.). Tests are easy, but I didn't enjoy most of the class; emphasis on memorization over understanding is strong and annoying.
This class was really easy. I got an A+ in the class and all I did was study her lecture PowerPoints. You do not need the book at all. As long as you study and take good notes in class you will do fine. Also lots of her test questions are straight off the online take home quizzes so if you do well on those, you will do great in her class.
The Pitt neuroscience department has very interesting lectures. Artim is remarkably stale and uninteresting. She often derails and fails to teach in detail, resulting in a massive number of students missing the same answers for the same reasons. Unfortunately, your options are limited and you're stuck with her.
Dr. Artim is very nice but overrated as a teacher. She just reads off powerpoint slides. If you like memorizing a bunch of facts take Artim. Gives 4 midterm exams which are pretty fair and an optional hard final. Weekly quizzes boost grade. I wouldn't recommend her if you want to actually learn neuroscience. Don't need the book.
I very much enjoyed neurophysiology with Dr. Artim. Her passion for the course material is evident. She encourages student participation. The class was hard, but ya know, it's neuroscience. She gives practice exams that are very similar to the actual tests.
Really didn't like her at all. As a person she's ok but as a professor she's pretty bad. She frequently flys through difficult material and spends lots of time on easier parts (because those are the things she actually knows how to explain) and harassing students I get she's trying to be relatable but it's annoying when she can't explain neurophys
Dr. Artim flies through 60+ slides a day and her exams are quite difficult. However, she is very nice and if you put in the work, you will be fine.
Dr. Artim is the bomb. She's hilarious and very clearly cares for her students. Although you definitely need to work for an A, nothing about her class is unreasonable. I highly recommend this professor.
Dr. Artim is pretty cool. Her exams are only based on lecture material, so don't bother buying the book. Her exams are fair. She uses TopHat for in class participation. She has tons of very good TAs.
Class isn't bad and not too hard its just that she spends way too much time on material senior neuroscience majors learned 2 years ago. Interesting topics but not presented in an interesting way. She was very disorganized but very personable. Its very obvious that she doesn't like math even if doing some math or physics would better help explain.
Dr. Artim is a really cool professor and clearly knows her stuff. She always answers students' questions as best she can. She does go quickly through her slides in class, so you will absolutely need to look at them outside of class to really master the material. Challenging course but she makes in bearable and fun.
Dr. Artim is an amazing teacher. It is clear that she wants her students to pass as she will take time out of lecture to answer every students questions. She bring relevant case studies/interesting neurological disorders that make class fun to learn about. She takes extra time to go over the lecture material she knows is hard to grasp.
You're going to have to study quite a bit for the tests as she throws a lot of different material at you for each test but that's to be expected for a neuroscience class. If you put in the work you'll get the grade you want. Tests aren't exactly easy, not super difficult, either, but they are very manageable if you study for them.
Dr. Artim reads almost verbatim from her PowerPoints, but her exams are reasonable as long as you thoroughly study for them. Overall, she is a good professor for Intro to Neuroscience. There are also quizzes and Top Hat participation questions, so your grade isn't entirely exam-based.
Dr. Artim is great. I am not a neuro major, but I am so glad I took the class. It isn't very difficult and she makes it easy to succeed by including quiz and TopHat points and you can drop the final! The material is so interesting and you can tell she is very knowledgeable. Would take again! Easy elective for bio majors.
Debra is awesome! Go to lecture because she will put things on her tests that she says but that are not included in the slides. MEMORIZE EVERYTHING for the tests and you should fly by - sometimes her questions can be a little confusing but can be cleared up by asking. Overall very little workload besides the studying for exams.
I liked Dr. Artim at the beginning of the year but gradually lost patience. Her slides are often very cluttered and vague and some of her test questions are unclear (which is important when each question is 2%). She also reads directly off her slides but you have to go to class anyway to get the Top Hat points.
Dr. Artim is one of my favorite professors at Pitt. She truly cares about all of her students and makes the lectures really enjoyable and fun to listen to. This class is all exams and quizzes on scientific papers, but she is very clear with her notes and what she expects from you.
Class was a great introduction to a fascinating field. Test averages were in the 80s, and don't have to take the final if you are happy with your grade. Lectures make it clear what you need to learn, and the tests were based purely on those. Very fair grader. Willing to answer questions in class (almost to a fault). She's a good person
I liked Dr. Artim in the beginning but after going to her to clarify topics from lectures and exams, she was extremely patronizing and rude. I'm not the only on who felt this way. Even her TA's avoided her like the plague. Tests were manageable but many questions were vague which made it easy to get a high B even after memorizing every single slide
This class was not the most interesting course but it was a good option for biology majors who need an easier science. Her exams require straight memorization.
she is your best choice for nrosci1000. exams aren't super easy but not super hard if you really know your stuff. she can be kinda grouchy/rude but still a good prof overall. just make sure you take good notes in class!
Artim is an okay professor, but didnt particularly sit well with me. The course has a ton of information, and she tests on the smallest details from each topic. She can be a little rude when answering questions, but is generally a nice person. Four pretty difficult exams with an optional final make up the bulk of the grade.
She's great at keeping the material as interesting as it can get. She's also understanding of circumstances that prevent you from taking an exam and will work with you to figure something out. That being said, test averages are usually in the C range, and there is a TON of material. Questions are super specific and require knowledge of every slide.
Just tophat for participation, so not necessarily mandatory. Struggled to get 10s on quizzes despite open notes (anyone else?). Literally have to memorize everything on slides for exams, and it's annoyingly lot. If you can do that, you're set. You can drop the final, and I did, bc I think I would've had to get over 100 to get an A.
Worst. Plese don't take her.
idk how ppl are rating her difficulty lower than a 4. her test are incredibly hard as she picks the smallest detail that she usually skips right over. There is so much material and detailed pathways/circuits with multiple routes/pathways. she will spend the majority of lec/quizzes on it but test on the most irrelevant detail. NOT AN EASY ELECTIVE
Her lectures are absolutely intolerable and she is the worst. So boring and the information is detailed for no reason. The tests are memory based and blows your mind by how picky a human being can be. If you want to save yourself from corny jokes and a wave of information that you will not remember after the exam skip on her and this major.
Dr. Artim is a good professor and knows what she's doing. The lectures are always engaging. That being said, the course is also very hard. There is a lot of content and tons of information to memorize. Tests require studying a week in advance. Luckily, there is no homework so you are not constantly busy for the course, but get ready to study alot.
Dr. Artim's class is interesting, but there is A LOT of information to memorize. I am not kidding when I say she once went over 36 slides the lecture before the exam. If you are willing to work hard and memorize a ton, then you will be fine. The exams are fair. 4 exams and if you are happy, no need to take the final.
One of the worst classes and professors at Pitt. You are graded solely on how good you are at memorizing about 1000+ slides for an exam. Overall concepts are not tested on exams but rather one little sentence that was placed in the corner of a powerpoint slide will be a multiple choice question. Definitely easier classes.
Neuropharmacology with Debra was very difficult. Lectures consisted of her regurgitating lecture slides, and the exams were very difficult. The animal models information for exam 2 was poorly presented and disorganized, and the questions were extremely confusing on the exam. DO NOT take her for intro or this class, especially if you're organized
So for neurophys, Debra was a pretty solid teacher. I think for math and concept oriented classes, such as this one, she is a great choice, and explains concepts well. I really wouldn't take her for classes other than this though, as information-dump classes are not her strength. Exams for this class are all open-ended and made this class doable
Tests are of medium difficulty and become pretty easy if you study a few days in advance. Writing out pathways and studying with others is highly recommended. Attend class for TopHat points and reach out to her if you need help. Debra wants her students to do well. She'll make time to meet with you and holds test reviews where she answers questions
She is sweet, nice, and caring. She wants you to do well, and gives you as many resources as possible. Exams are pretty much based on her lecture slides, so don't bother with the book. As long as you can memorize slides, you should be fine. However, some of quiz questions were a little bit tricky.
Artim is a good professor, but rude if you see her individually. She is very knowledgable about the material and has most of the answers, but can come off as rude when you ask her questions. Would probably take her again, as it wasn't a bad choice.
DONT TAKE HER. Shes rude and doesnt care if you fail. won't help you out and if she does she's soooo rude about it making you feel stupid for asking a question. Also the exams are nitpicky, if you don't memorize every word she says you will fail.
Nice in lecture. Has a lot of ways to prepare you for exams. 4 straightforward midterms, 1 OPTIONAL final, 11 online quizzes + a little TopHat particip. Class is just straight memorization, not really concept based. Might be a breeze if you have a good memory. Make quizlets based on the lectures. REVIEW old online quizzes and tophat. Has some EC
Took her for addiction as my neuro electives. Much easier neuro electives, but very interesting course. Be prepared to read the papers she assigns everything's on the powerpoint so can skip class Overall ok class
It was an okay course and fairly straight forward but a complete disappointment in terms of the course material. The pharmacology she taught is nowhere near the level of a respectable pharmacology course. It was mostly a sociology/history course rather than real science. There was so much more she could have discussed for each drug.
I really liked her and she was super nice to me whenever I went to her office hours. Her quizzes are difficult, but they (and the review sheets) are very helpful for exams, which I didn't think were too hard if you read the questions carefully. I would recommend having a decent background in A&P before this as it definitely isn't an easy elective.
Dr. Artim is a really good professor for intro to neuro. There are 5 exams including the final and you can drop one of them. There are weekly quizzes online which can be difficult, but you can use notes, the textbook, and look stuff up so it is not too hard to score well on them. Tophat is also part of the grade for participation so go to lecture.
Dr. Artim goes through things very quickly and doesn't explain things clearly. She's nice and has lots of review sessions before tests. Participation isn't mandatory but its hard to understand the powerpoint without being in class. I talked to someone else w a different 1000 prof and said they didn't cover a lot that we did.
Nice lady, bad teacher. Her PowerPoint slides are very vague and she doesn't explain them clearly. She covers a huge amount of information but somehow still manages to ask test & quiz questions on things that we never covered in class. Take someone else if you can.
I was impressed w Dr. Artim transitioning the class to remote. W in-person lectures, she seems to focus more on memorization esp in neurobiology. Online she focused more on application of the material. Know the details of the content and prepare for application questions, but you'll never have a trick question. Study slides and know your pathways!
Dr. Artim can be rude, and she makes you feel dumb for asking questions during exams. I really enjoyed the material of neuropharm of addiction, and I learned a lot. However, some of her test questions are unclear and unfair. I only got an A because we could look at our notes during quarantine. I overall recommend the class for the material.
This class has a lot of challenging material but acquiring an understanding of the class is doable with time and effort. However, Artim's exams didn't test much of your ability to apply understanding. Rather, if you didn't memorize every bullet point on each of her 60+ slides per lecture then you were guaranteed to miss a few. Extremely rude also.
Asks a whole bunch of trick questions so even if you know the material you will still do poorly.
COVID19:She is probably the best neuroscience teacher. She is very accessible and wants to help. The class itself is mainly memorization and her test questions are decently challenging but nothing too crazy. Have to do homework for each Chapter on tophat and worksheets during class. You have to watch lectures that feel long before class. Solid!
There are 5 units. tophat questions accumulate throughout each unit and are due at the end of it. Worksheets are assigned weekly that are graded on completeness, but try on them because they will help prepare you for the test. Tests are require a thorough understanding of material, so take thorough notes on the lectures and study. Tests open note.
Dr. Artim is a solid choice for Human Phys. Coming in, I knew it was going to be a lot of work. But tests were always fair, there's 5 exams, homework, and in class worksheets graded on participation. She's kind and accessible outside of class, and provides plenty of worksheets to practice before the tests. It's a hard class but she teaches it well
Compared to a lot of professors during COVID, she does a really great job at understanding online classes are difficult, and then actually tailoring the class accordingly. She's super clear about expectations for the course/exams, so as long as you put in the work/do the practice problems that she provides, you'll be fine!
Class consisted of 5 unit exams, which altogether added to 85% of your final grade. No dropped exams and every one of them was largely memorization based. The other 15% of the exam was fairly easy to earn, as it was stuff for completion. Exams were difficult and lectures were very heavy. Difficult, but as expected for intro to neuro.
This class was a flipped class and the exams are all multiple choice with difficult and confusing wording. The lectures were extremely long and most of the important stuff was mentioned through word of mouth in the lectures, not actually written. TAs were more helpful than she ever was and there was never a good reason to go to class
I learned a lot in this class! Her narrated Powerpoint lectures were easier for me to get through b/c material was broken up by slide, so it was easier to take notes. Breaks down concepts and processes well for clear understanding. Expect to cover a lot of material. Class consisted of 5 unit exams + TopHat questions + worksheets (completion)
Dr. Artim is definitely a solid choice for intro! Online all the exams were open note which helped with the large amount of content. She's really passionate about the topic and that shows in her lectures! I liked the voice over lecture slides, it helped to pause her and write down extra information. It was 5 exams (no final), worksheets, and TopHat
Artim is a great professor. She made the exams open note, which made them very manageable. The lectures are long and she covers a lot of material, but if you keep up with notes and review before the exams (5 total, no final) it is fine (mostly memorization). Tophat (asynchronous) and worksheets for participation. Excellent choice for intro neuro.
The class itself is all memorization. She isn't really a good lecturer and just reads of the slides. She adds voiceovers on each powerpoint slide, which means you can't fast forward them.. Don't bother buying the textbook. The info in the textbooks contradicts her lectures, and it is a pain getting points back for right answers.
I really liked Dr. Artim. Her class was tough, but I learned a lot. I improved as I went through the course and she was very open for outside questions. I think she handled an online course extremely well. The recorded powerpoints very extremely detailed and helpful. I would recommend her, but you have to work for your grade. Great teacher!
Neuroscience is genuinely an interesting topic but the way Artim chooses to teach the class really takes all the passion away from the subject. She is very traditional and depends on her slides to teach the class. By depends on, I mean she quite literally reads off them word for word for an hour straight. Heavy memorization and basically self study
Really interesting topic. Good class, but you can't be lazy. It will catch up to you. Nice prof, but she reads off of the slides, so class can drag :/ Very memorization heavy! 1 quiz each week. Exam and quiz questions can be tricky. Read the questions carefully! There's 4 exams and a final. Each weighted the same. You can drop any 1 exam.
Teaches through very dry lectures where she just reads off slides. She does explain harder concepts in person a bit but easy to skip all lectures. Grade is determined by exams where you memorize every bullet point on every slide, no application or deep thinking required. Easy A if you're good at that, otherwise class is hell.
Artim is a boring, repetitive lecturer and her slides are disorganized & diagram heavy. When you ask her questions during office hours/review sessions, her feedback is not very helpful. I found that reading through TopHat textbook was a good way to learn the content, but theres a lack of proper review questions. Mediocre choice for human phys.
Dr. Artim seems knowledgeable in her field and is an effective teacher. She uploads her slides and only tests off what's on them so you know what you need to study. However, her lectures can get boring and she makes it difficult to review exams after they're graded, which is annoying since they're 75% of the grade.
Dr. Artim has pretty boring lectures that are hard to follow. When you ask her questions in office hours or during exam review, she can be condescending and rude in her responses. She told us the final would be 60% cumulative when it was basically just the last two weeks of material we learned. Lots of memorization. Really study hormones.
I'm surprised by all the bad ratings! Debra is tough, but her exams are straightforward & all material is covered by her lectures. Come to class, pay attention, & stay on top of your studying instead of cramming, and the class is manageable. Personally, I liked Debra's lecture style. She is straightforward, clear, and passionate about the subject.
Weekly quizzes + 5 exams (one dropped). Grade weights: 15% quizzes, 10% top hat questions (so you need to go to lecture), and 75% exams. This will help a lot when calculating the final grade. Lectures can drag a bit but some of very interesting/engaging. This class requires lots of studying to do well on exams. Exam ques. are very detail-oriented.
Artim's boring and dull teaching style makes it difficult to appreciate and absorb the content covered in class. There are three unit exams (22% each), homework (10%), and one cumulative final (24%) that wasn't cumulative at all and mainly focused on the later material covered. Review the content multiple times a week and use the tophat textbook
Frankly, I skipped every single class because I couldn't stand how slow and uninteresting her lectures were. I only showed up on exam days. It was a shame I paid thousands of dollars in tuition for this bland instruction. The exams were fair and based on the textbook and PowerPoints. Avoid this professor if you actually like Human Physiology.
I think Dr. Artim was ok overall. Exams had ALOT of memorization, and in lecture she focuses on slides an equal amount yet not all slides are on the exam. Each lecture is 30-50 slides which is far too many slides... She is boring and can put you to sleep in lecture, exams are def from the powerpoint but questions are application and not only memory
Human phys is tough b/c it's a ton of memorization, so exams were difficult! Dr. Artim explains things well imo & she is available to clarify things whenever you need. Grade is based on 3 exams + final + Tophat HW questions, so it's super test heavy & there are no drops (v stressful :/) - make sure u understand processes in depth & can explain it
Poor teacher. It not the the class isn't structured, but how she rolls out the information is very unorganized. Can't drop lowest test. Boring lectures (very monotone). Wouldn't take her again. To end on a positive I will say that she seems nice.
She's a decent professor. This class requires a lot of self-study, which will be the case for any Physiology class. If you have the time to dedicate to this class, you will do well.
She will make you hate an amazing subject. Extremely unaccomadating and she doesn't care about her students
I have never studied more for a class or have been this stressed for a class than this. Oh my, her exams are way too specific. Honestly it's pure memorization of hundreds of slides down to every little detail. On the bright side, the exams are very reflective of lecture slides. She was helpful in office hours though, so do utilize those.
She will make you hate neuroscience. Every other neuro student will advise you not to take her LISTEN TO THEM. She is detail-oriented, and she loves to trick students on her exams. If you don't understand one thing on the slides, you will not do well on exams. She doesn't really curve, even though it's tough to comprehend/pay attention. GOOD LUCK.
Dr. Artim was a great professor for human physiology the only negative was the difficulty of her tests and her monotone voice. Personally though, I had no issue doing decent on her tests and I found it easy to stay engaged in the lectures. Also, her exams are pretty straightforward from the material, as long as you go to lecture you will do fine.
This is baseline a hard class, but definitely get ready to put the work in with her. She can sometimes ask questions that are so in detail that I found ridiculous. Homework 10% of your grade exams are the rest. MEMORIZE/UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING
Her lectures are very boring, and the exams are usually 6 lectures of material. I had her for intro to neuroscience where we got to drop an exam and take the optional final which would replace our lowest exam grade. In this class, there's none of that. Very boring professor and exams were not easy, the average was always around a 78-80.
I'm surprised to see so many reviews complaining abt the difficulty of 1017. Yes, Debra's exams are hard b/c advanced neuro topics are hard. However, she gives lots of review materials & is very helpful in office hours; the class is straightforward & manageable if you put in the work. Lectures are dense but the textbook is really helpful (& free!)
Honors intro to neuro included weekly casual journal clubs (+disc posts) along with regular lectures. The lecture content was not too complicated; she is just incredibly boring. Exams themselves aren't super tricky, and the questions come directly off the slides, no textbook or outside materials. No cumulative final, just four unit exams + tophat.
She is helpful outside of class. Her tests are sooooo specific. It is impossible to get a good grade in the class if you don't memorize every little detail from her slides. There are a lot of application questions on her tests too and she purposefully tries to trick you. Buying the textbook is a waste of money because she doesn't use it at all.
Artim's intro course was one of the most difficult courses I have taken at Pitt. The tests are incredibly specific and purposefully deceitful. All of the information you need for exams is on her slides, but specificity of questions requires intense studying in order to succeed. I would not recommend her for the intro course.
she explains all the topics very clearly and makes the subject very interesting!
At the end of the day the complexity of the material being taught dictates whether or not the course is difficult, not nessesarily the professor. For intro artim was great for teaching a general scope of neuro and her questions were straight off the slides and quiz questions - just spend time with the lecture material and get help if needed.
Solid choice for intro to neuro. She is a pretty engaging lecturer. Tests and materials are very difficult, so will take some effort to consolidate all of the info. But, she is a very straightforward and fair professor. One of the most straightforward stem courses at Pitt.
I loved Dr. Artim! I think I had a different experience than most, because I never felt like any of the exam questions were sneaky or super difficult. Honestly, I made quizlets and memorized all the information she presented to us and now I don't have to take the final. She's super nice and responds to emails, definitely take her if you can!!
Dr. Artim was knowledgeable, but her lectures had a lot of information. It sounded like she was reading the textbook to us, which was good bc all the info is there, but it can feel dry. Anything covered in lecture was fair game on the exams and there was a lot of memorization. Grade was based on 4 exams and TopHat questions.
She just runs her classes too difficultly. TopHat homework grades have barely any impact on your grade, and exams are of the highest difficulty. Focuses on minute details so the entire class is basically how much could you memorize. If you can memorize the textbook word-for-word you'd do fine in her classes (no need to be able to reason/analyze)
Neuropharm was an interesting class. Good option for an elective. The powerpoints have all the info you need so I didn't take many notes, I just made a quizlet from the slides, which worked fine for me. There is a lot of memorizing involved, and the tests were tricky and focused on details. She went into a lot of the psychology behind drug taking.
Loved this class! Material was interesting, and everything tested was on the lecture slides/said in lecture. Lectures were recorded, had open-note quizzes and 5 exams (1 droppped). Exams were very reasonable and fair. Lectures could be dry sometimes, but Artim tried to make them interesting. Mainly memorization, so use Quizlet! Highly recommend.
Dr. Artim was a great Intro to Neuro professor! Her lectures and quizzes were somewhat tricky at times, but very doable. The material was presented quite well and was very interesting. If you study the slides and read the questions carefully, you'll be fine for the class. Also: make sure you draw out diagrams and pictures; they help immensely!
Lots of content to memorize. Sometimes the lectures bored me to death and other times I enjoyed them a lot! She tells great stories. Exams/quizzes were very straightforward. I just wish we got a better idea of what to study (like a list of conceptual questions) instead of just reviewing the quizzes and slides. I did not find the TAs very helpful.
Dr. Artim is an incredibly boring lecturer. Her exams are super in-depth, so make sure you memorize every single detail on her slides (which are loaded with information and a bit disorganized)--I used Quizlet. Grade based on 3 exams, 1 final (that was 80% the last two weeks of material), and homework. No exam drop. I think she does a slight curve.
Dr. Artim is the bomb. Incredibly organized, intelligent, & talented with breaking down complex subjects for newer students. She is a fair grader. Print-out the powerpoints to highlight & take notes. Study the slides before and after lectures. Study the quizzes. It is a tough class as it honestly should be, and I respect her organization.
She is a good professor (can be monotone) and is knowledgeable . This class relies on a lot of memorizing and understanding the systems in detail. You can drop 1 exam and 1 quiz. Don't let "intro" fool you into thinking it is an easy A, you will still have to put in a lot of work to understand some of the harder content. Units 1+4 are easiest.
Artim is very sweet, but her exams aren't easy. Memorize every detail from the slides, understand concepts, and study your quizzes. Utilize post-exam review sessions (to see what questions you got wrong) if you're struggling. You are graded on more than just exams, which is nice, but they are still 75% of your grade. Intro does not mean easy!!!
VERY test heavy class with no curve. exams are extremely application based but her review questions help prep you for the exam. she can definitely be a little intimidating outside of class for help, but as long as you show you're willing to learn, you're good. likes to make little jokes with the class, too, which made i enjoyed
Dr. Artim is amazing. She lectures in a very clear way. She records her lectures, so you can go back and re-watch, which is a must because of how heavy the load work is. Four quizzes/assignments/exams. She will always answer questions and is very open to helping you understand stuff. She's so nice and brilliant. Very hard class, but interesting!
To be fair, synaptic transmission is not an interesting subject, but her lectures were very boring. Exams were very wordy and confusing and make up 80% of your grade, though they do reflect what you learn. She does record her lectures which is nice and she holds open office hours, though she will probably make you feel dumb for asking questions.
The class was split into 4 exams worth 20% each, 4 assignments worth 10% total, and 4 quiz worth 10% total. Dr. Artim is a very boring lecturer and makes a boring topic even more boring and difficult than it needs to be. The tests would have very long questions in the form of "what would happen if you change this." She records lectures.
Took Dr. Artim for intro and synaptic. By the end of synaptic her lectures got very dull. She has a terrible GI track and will cancel class about 4 times a semester so nice breaks. Final is not cumulative which is nice.
I have taken Artim for 3 classes now. She is the GOAT. Her tests aren't easy but if you study directly from her lectures you'll be fine. She is a pretty tough professor but if you put in the effort, it is possible to get an A. She is a really good lecturer. She explains things in a very simple way to make it easier to understand the hard concepts.
Four midterms and a final, lowest is dropped. Lectures are recorded, pretty organized and helpful for understanding the material. I attended every class and studied a few days before each exam and got an A on all of them. Quiz q's and tophats are frequently on the exams.
Exams are tough and unforgiving if you do not completely memorize the textbook. Tests make up 90% of the grading scheme and there are no drops/curves. If you fall behind in this class its basically impossible to catch up again.
Avoid her. Workload is far too high. Expects you to memorize every slide of 8-10 lectures for each midterm, very memorization heavy and tough multiple choice midterms. You're going to have to sacrifice a lot for this class it's not worth it. Also, she's mean, not accommodating. Positives are recorded lectures, easy homework (but only 10% of grade)
For one test, I got a 71% but it was fine because she dropped the lowest exam if you took the optional final. That saved my grade and I still ended up with an A! She records all her lectures so it's ok if you miss class or don't take notes. I really love Dr. Artim. I struggled with the motor systems unit (3), but she's still a really good professor
I didn't think the class was as hard as everyone rated it. I definitely wish I got an A+, but the third unit and the final messed me up. Panopto recorded lectures made coming to lecture mostly irrelevant and online quizzes, two dropped. 4 exams graded, optional cumulative final to take if you want to try dropping one exam.
Very memorization heavy. Exams are doable bc all questions come straight from lecture or textbook its just a lot to know. She seems nice in lecture but very condescending if you ask what she deems a stupid question. Lectures recorded.
Class definitely wasn't easy and you will have to put a lot of work in to do well. Lectures could be boring sometimes but exams were very fair. As long as you know the slides you'll do fine on exams.I ended up doing well enough to drop the final which was a huge relief for me.
I really liked Artim for Intro! Exams are made up of everything on the Powerpoints, so be prepared for a lot of memorization. You can tell she wants the class to succeed and provides resources for your success. She gives out practice worksheets for exams, drops your worst exam grade (no final if you're lucky), and has quizzes/Top Hat as buffer.
I don't know why people say Dr. Artim is monotone; she really isn't. I found her quite engaging. She moves quickly, so her uploading the lectures onto Canvas is immensely helpful. Finding a good group to take the quizzes with (it's allowed) helps a lot too. She seems cold in office hours, but she does care that you truly understand the material.
Artim is very knowledgeable about the subjects she teaches but the worst person I've ever encountered as a professor at this school. If you go to her office hours she is very cold and mean to any question which makes it hard to want to do better in her class. Her lectures are also very boring and monotone. If any other prof is available take them!!
debbie, debbie, debbie...where to begin. she was an ok lecturer but probably the rudest and most disrespectful excuse of a prof ive ever met. reached out for help bc i was struggling inside and outside of the classroom and she laughed in my face. feeling defeated and unhelped i withdrew. exams were extremely convoluted and specific. do not take.
5 tests (one drop, incl final), 12quizzes + top hat participation. amazing lecturer with lots of related stories to help you remember material. exams were hard but doable if you study hard and a lot of questions are repeated from hw. approachable by email and office hour if a little honest. taking her again next sem!
I really enjoyed Artim as a professor and she made the content digestible with engaging lectures. The course requires learning a lot of information quickly, so stay on top of material. Exams (4) were fair and an optional final, plus weekly online quizzes and tophat questions. Review quizzes before exams!!!
class was mainly memorization; overstudying went a long way for me, but i thought she was a very boring lecturer. found the content more engaging when i went over it myself than listening to her; 5 total exams including final w/ one drop that can make final optional; reuses lots of questions from quizzes and tophat; MC and fill in the blank on exam
Try to avoid if you can, the information honestly isn't bad it's so fun to learn and interesting but the wording of questions are pretty much made to trick you. posts lectures but audio doesn't work for so many so go to class if you can. save yourself if you can though,, going to office hours feels pointless most times
Synaptic was not bad in terms of content. It actually is doable to understand the concepts. However, when it comes to the grading of this class, it is unfair. There are no drops. The exams have questions that are meant to trick you rather than test your understanding. Her recordings did not work several times in the semester.
I think honors neurophys is a good class for artim. she isnt as monotonous as her other classes and engages everyone because of the smaller class size. she made the class easy (exams were almost identical to practice problems). the content is the same as nonhonors neurophys but there are also journal clubs. highly recommend as opposed to nonhonors!
debra artim is quite possibly the rudest professor i have ever encountered at Pitt. the class itself was fine but she is so demeaning and abrasive. it's very evident that she does not care about what she does or her students. dont even try to go to her for help because she will laugh in your face. do not ever take a class with her.
NEVER take Artim for upper level neuro classes. Synaptic wasn't even hard, but the way she asks questions is so confusing and contradictory. It is so difficult to understand what she wants from students. Attendance is basically mandatory because she failed multiple times to record Panopto correctly. Never take her for upper neuro. Spare yourself.
I've never written any of my professors a RMP . This will be my first just because of how egregious this class was. I have never encountered a ruder professor in my life, and I have heard from several peers that they were called out in a rude manner in office hours. I have never felt comfortable with going to her for help. Please don't take her.
The material itself is not that hard at all, but the way she asks questions on her exams, quizzes, and assignments are awful. Every question has 3 or 4 correct answers and it's never clear the context with which she's asking the question, so you never know which one to pick. Overall bad teacher and stay away if possible.
I had a great experience in Synaptic Transmission. The course is meant to be challenging, so the grading policies of no drops made sense to me. Dr. Artim never tests anything outside of what she covers in lectures. With the free textbook being a great resource and her recording lectures, I didn't go to a single lecture and felt prepared for exams
2nd time taking Artim and synaptic was HARD. I was constantly studying to do well in class (go to class, rewatch all lectures, read textbook, do review q's, etc.). Knowing her teaching style from intro definitely helped me do well. Grade is 80% exams, and assignment + quizzes provided only a minimal boost for me. 1st unit was the hardest.
Much harder than intro. 80% exams with the last during finals week. There are also quizzes and assignments that make up the last 20%. Exams are multiple choice and written. Grades are not rounded and nothing is dropped. Watching lectures without reading is enough to do well on exams, and all lectures are recorded so attendance isn't necessary.
The material itself wasn't too hard, but I didn't like how we were graded by so few things. Also, Artim is rude and condescending and seems like she'd rather be doing anything else rather than teaching students. She acts as if answering students' questions is beneath her. Take someone else if you have the option.
Ngl I was kinda surprised reading these reviews because I thought neuropharm with Artim was great. She did tell us that this was her favorite class to teach, so maybe she treats the electives/smaller classes better than bigger ones like synaptic or phys. Overall, I really enjoyed the class. A lot of memorization but nothing unmanageable. V useful!!
Dr. Artim's class was tough but it made me learn the material. Her exams, quizzes, and assignments are structured in a way that if you know the material as well as she expects, it's a breeze, but if you don't, they can be very challenging. Some answer choices are there to trip you up but if you prepare accordingly you have nothing to worry about.
Shes the head of the human phys lab and makes it a lot more work for a 1 credit lab class. We have labs every week and then there are random projects, case studies, and lab reports outside of class. Lots of busy work.
The material isn't too bad, but the grading policies and Artim's teaching style make this class a struggle. Attendance is mandatory, and the exams are tricky rather than testing understanding. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep.
Love her vibe, dislike the difficulty of this class (which I understand is a me issue LOL). Can be cold during office hrs, don't take it personally tho xD 5 exams and 1 drop (final included), participation, and quizzes make up your grade. Exams are comprehensive (make sure you know the minute details). Records/posts lectures online, is accessible.
Dr. Artim was great! These low ratings don't do her justice. 3 midterms, a final, and tophat questions make up your grade. The 3 midterms were based off of only lectures, so study those in detail. The final was integrative, with the majority of its content on the later part of the semester. Highly recommend if you want a good grade in Human Phys
I really liked Dr. Artim for intro to neuro, her lectures are very clear and she's always willing to answer questions. She can be a little cold during office hours but she's generally nice and helpful. The exams are super fair and expect you to know the information from lecture well. 5 exams drop 1 plus quizzes and top hat points.
I really liked Dr. Artim. Don't copy the slides word for word. She gives the presentations on canvas, so take notes on the extra stuff she said. The little details matter; they'll be on exams. Exams vary in difficulty, but she drops your lowest exam. Very knowledgeable and she uses good examples.
Dr. Artim is very knowledgable in the subject. Tests were based on lecture and she posts recordings of lectures. Quizzes were open-note and fairly easy. She could come across as cold, but that is her personality.
Dr. Artim is a good teacher. She definitely knows what she is talking about and it shows. The tests are a little bit hard, but just set aside a good amount of time to study. Her only downside is that she has like an ASMR voice that makes it hard to pay attention in lecture but that's literally it
There is a difference between challenging your students to be better and being mean (trying to trick them). Dr. Artim is the 2nd. Lectures were unengaging and disorganized. She offers good feedback if you review exams with her (she makes mistakes in grading so please go). Dr. Artim would grow by re-evaluating her testing style.
It is not as bad as other neuroscience classes, I think the easiest class to take. Yet, she somehow has a superiority complex? Teachers are supposed to be nice, if you have a "cold" personality, maybe don't teach and become a lab rat? Not to be harsh but people want to succeed, hard to do with people like Artim. Unfair teachers like this exist.
She is great for every other class EXCEPT synaptic. The material is actually not difficult at all but reading her exam questions gives me a stroke. You could know the material inside and out but half her questions genuinly make no sense it makes the exams so much harder than necessary, even if you know whats going on, which is unfair.
One of the best classes I've taken in the Neuro degree. Dr. Artim's expertise really shines in this course, and while it is still difficult material, it is super manageable because it is so interesting. I never found any of the exams to be tricky or to have unexpected questions. Highly recommend taking as the advanced elective. Great class!
this was my 3rd time taking artim, and it is definitely my favorite course with her so far! her exams were tough as expected, but much more manageable/simpler than intro and synaptic. 100% would take this course with artim again, so far my favorite neuro course at pitt
Artim is pretty okay. Her lectures can be very boring, but she covers in class what is on exams (so no need to buy the book). Her questions on exams and quizzes are wordy and kind of meant to trip you up. The course itself is fairly easy, but she makes it more challenging than it needs to be. She is one of the only ones who teach this, so enjoy
Dr. Artim's lectures are clear, and she posts all of the material to Canvas. When she grades the exams, she can be unpredictable in how specific she wants you to get, so I'd just get as specific and try to his as many points as possible. Would definitely take her again though, she knows the material well and teaches it well too.
Intro to Neuro is the weed out class of neuro majors. But Dr. Artim makes it laid back and honestly not that bad I showed up for lectures but would zone out the easiest way to get an A in this course is to go to lecture instead of making notes: Make an anki deck out of that days lecture content then by the exam week youll have a study guide use it.
Debby is honestly not horrible but I can firmly say her exam 3 was the worst thing me and my friend in the course have taken. She isn't great at teaching but she has a lot of outside study tools to help you succeed. This class is hard though it's a weed out and you want to make sure to do well early on cause the content RAMPS in difficulty.
she is a b word
Dr. Artim is really knowledgeable and is always willing to answer questions in lecture. Her exams are tough: answer choices are like: A,B,C; B+C, C only, none of the above, etc. (need to know the little details). Final is optional, but it can replace lowest exam score. Discussion board, top hat, and hw quizzes make up only 20% of the grade.
Overall really good prof. Exams can be challenging but if you study hard you will do fine. Pay attention in lecture because there are sometimes things on the exams said in lecture but not on the slides. Records all lectures. Posts all slides.
The exams are basically the lecture slides. Memorize those, and you will be fine. Lectures and tophats are posted, so you don't need to go to class. You get one drop (including the final). The final exam is basically questions from the midterms. Lectures can be a bit boring, but work hard, and you'll earn an A.
Very straight forward. Lectures are all recorded and slides posted before and does tophat for credit posted after classes if you don't go. Quizzes aren't too bad and discussions are mainly graded on participation. Tests are meh. Multiple choice and a few easier open ended Q's. Lots of repeated Q's from quizzes and extra credit phrase on first exam.
In Artim's defense, she is a fair professor and her class is very fair. However she is not great at answering your questions one-on-one. Whenever I left office hours I felt worse about myself. She doesn't give back exams so you have to schedule a time to review them. Exams can be very very detail heavy.
Dr. Artim was great! 4 exams, last one is integrative, but very heavy on unit 4 material, plus tophat questions make up your grade. Listen to what she says in class and the examples she gives. She is a good professor and explains things well, utilize her office hours and resources and you will do fine.
Artim comes off as abrasive to others but personally I think she's just tired. Her tests are tough but fair, if you understand and memorize everything on her slides you should have no problem getting the grade you want. the only problem i had with her class is the discussion posts, for a 300 person class the posts can lag quite hard
