Save yourself the trouble and money and skip over this professor. As others have said, shes very disorganized. This makes learning anything in class very difficult. She takes any absences/tardiness personally, so expect to be at every class listening to her fragmented explanations and irrelevant information.

Very nice woman who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. However, she lacks the skills to teach and often gets frustrated when students aren't "with her". She seems offended when questions are asked. Labs are disorganized and unclear. Tests and quizzes are complicated and filled with errors. Find another professor and avoid this one.

Used PowerPoints from an earlier addition of the book so they did not exactly follow the required text. Very unorganized and gruff. Will go around the room and require students to answer questions aloud.

She is an amazing biologist but she is an old goat who wants to be recognized. The subjects she teaches present a challenge her tricky wording is not needed. She is disorganized, none of the experiments work, tests are three to four chapters of material typically 30 questions per test. One wrong answer is a big point deduction

Professor is the school for the retirement, she has no desire to teach students, and quite possibly, enjoys flunking students. She had advised a fellow student to take two classes, one she solely conducted and another offered by her and another professor, in which she failed a top student. If given the chance to avoid her, its highly recommended.

While she is enthusiastic about Bio, she is a horrible teacher. It was a 100-level course at a community college; teaches way above that level. expects you to have prior knowledge & makes you feel stupid if you don't know exactly what she's talking about. Talks above your head & uses overly technical jargon. Take someone else if possible.

I agree...She literally cannot articulate or teach and it takes a toll on the learning process. She makes you feel like dirt when you ask questions in class because she is insecure. I agree that she is rude and unprofessional. She acts like an infant in class/lab and her exams do not reflect her poor lecture content. She reduced my interest in bio.

Took for Microbiology. DO NOT TAKE HER. I am a good student but this professor should not be teaching. Does not communicate well with students. Tests are VERY hard to pass. I learned nothing from the class except to never take this professor again.

Bedell is a horrible teacher. She is too smart to teach because she cannot dumb it down for her students. She expects you to know way more than you do upon entering the class. She told my class the most As she has ever gotten on one of her tests in one class was 10. I am an A student, she is a bad teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER.

Awful professor! Completely useless and unwilling to help her students. Didn't even respond to student emails. By far worst teacher I've ever had. Shes some kind of scientist maniac.. She knows all her information about Biology but she is not meant to be a teacher. Her class was IMPOSSIBLE. I needed her class in order to graduate to make transferring out easier. I dropped her class because it was very unfair. She did not care to help people and had no problem putting you on the spot negatively. I honestly cannot say that I learned a single things from having her as a professor. Do not take her!

I dropped her microbio class. When the semester started the whole class was packed with full 24 students. By the time i dropped literally there were 8 students surviving and happy with a C or C- if you want to downflag your GPA she is ok. She didnt even care why more than half of her class dropped the course. very difficult. impossible class.

I am a typical A student and this class I almost got a C it was so hard. She would not make any accommodations for me when I had to miss class due to a death in the family, in fact she scoffed and told me even if I bring an obituary it didn't matter. This professor clearly knows microbiology but does not know how to teach. She has bad people skills

horrible teacher get ready to get your GPA dropped. do not take a hybrid course with her. finishes labs early and doesnt care to teach any material for exams coming up. i really feel lile she teaches these hybrid courses just to get out of teaching an actual full semester.

Absolute worst teacher I have ever taken. I am typically an A student and I struggled to maintain a C in her course. She does NOT prepare you for her exams, nor does she explain what she wants you to know. She belittles students who ask questions. First few exams where different from what she said it was going to be on. She made it tough.

Only gives 30 min for a 50 question exams . She also gives a lot of assignments due at the same time . Its worst than my nursing courses ! I graduated from NSCC and have always had great teachers but this teacher is by far the worst and also she doesnt care if her students pass or not !

Worst professor ever. Im in the Nursing program and this class was far more difficult. The tests had no study guides, you literally had to learn the entire book. 90% of your grade is tests only. Tests she does not prepare you for.

I was like you once, researching a professor for micro. If I could go back, I would of never have chosen Bedell. I am only 3 weeks in and I cant wait for this to end. She is a horrible, boring teacher. Get ready to read and memorize each chapter word for word for her obnoxious quizzes. Im an A student, shes impossible.

I took Microbiology with her at the beginning of the pandemic. I wouldnt recommend anyone to take a class of hers online. Ive taken many classes online and this was one like never before. With everything going on and everyone still learning the process of online classes, she was not lenient or helpful at all. Do not recommend.

This was a COLD online distance courses. She did not open the discussion board so students can help each other. Ms. Bedell offered NO office hours to her students that might need some help. You are also tested to death. The labs never coincided with the chapter so you have to learn double the material. Skip it if you can. Try anyone else.

I repeat do NOT take a class with her, I am only a few weeks in and she just overloads the number of assignments. If you have an exam due in the week, you still have to do your regular weekly assignment, it is so difficult to find time to study with the work overload. You also are being recorded during your exams and quizzes.

She will give you no time to complete quizzes or exams, her quizzes and exams are overloaded with questions. She expects you to answer on a whim but gives you no time to study because on to the next the following week. Take anyone else besides her. Class is hard for no reason. Not enjoyable at all. You cant learn with the time frame.

By far the worst Ive ever had and if you think it was just me youre wrong I was lucky enough to be granted permission to swap into another Bio class mid semester...I couldnt pass a single exam with her and yet passed with an A when I changed professors! This professor was the worst professor Ive ever had. Everything was timed and she gave very little time. I reached out to her for further explanation of things and she told me to go make flash cards and have someone quiz you. I dropped the course and took it with another professor and ended the class with an A. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.

I made the mistake of registering for this course before I looked at her reviews. She is VERY exam heavy (90% of your grade). The exams are timed unfairly, and to make things worse, she writes the exams herself and a lot of the time the questions are grammatically incorrect and do not make sense. She is also rude when you ask for help.

No matter how much I study and how confident I am in the material, I rarely get above a C/D on her exams. Things are worded poorly, spelling errors, and sometimes I have no idea what a question is even asking. There are things on quizzes that are not in the chapter. Way too many quizzes and tests, impossible to find time to finish all work & study.

I made the mistake of taking this class as a distant learning class. No zoom or anything. She offers no help for students struggling. The chapter YouTube videos she gives us to watch arent even of her, theyre of another professor (at a diff school) lecturing. She doesnt even have the discussion board turned on so students can help each other.

This professor is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Her tests are way too complex. Some of the questions do not relate to what we read. She won't let us use any handwritten notes during test-taking. She has a lot of misspelled words in her test questions as well as her assignments. Also, won't let us preview our tests after completion.

I hate this professor with passion. She gave students a bunch of materials to memorize. If you can't memorize them all. You will mostly fail the class. If you ask her to nail down the materials for the exam, she would not help you. You must memorize everything you read! That's why many people dropped out and failed her class. She is terrible.

This professor lacks empathy. I dont see how this person is a college professor if they dont know how to empathize for a students circumstances and help them get through the semester when the student is showing they are willing able to do whatever it takes to pass the course. Do NOT enroll in a class with this professor.

She is an awful person. She gives u tons of homework, assignments, quizzes but none of them are worth any points. Only exams do. Her exam is more questions than time, which means u don't have time to think during the exam. She is a poor communicator via email, which is the only way to be in touch with her. She hardly communicates with her students

You study hard and you don't know where she put the test and exams from . question are all confused.

I am a straight A student and I could not continue with this class. There is so much content and none of what is taught is on the exams or quizzes. The exams are worth 90% of your grade. This is crazy given how much classwork and homework is given. There is a quiz every week and it is open response questions. No time to study.

This professor has clear grading criteria and is extremely quiz/exam heavy. The tests are all fill in the blank and are poorly written. Communication is disabled in blackboard so you cannot communicate with classmates. I am an a/b student and halfway through the course I realized that there was no possible way for me to pass.

Unfortunately, does not allow you any sort of flexibility in the slightest. Things are due on the date, and there is no sort of sympathetic compromise for her students at all. If you have any other classes, you will struggle. It's important to be punctual, however, she does not take her student's time into account. Coming from an A/B student.

Professor has consistently lowered my self-esteem as a student. All quizzes I took were poorly written, and given little time to finish (15 questions - 10 min). Homework assignments/study guides consist of questions that may almost never be on the quiz for the chapter. Read the chapter, skim over it again, study more; you may still fail quizzes.

Professor lacks communication and has no empathy towards her students.She expects us to know everything and puts no hope to students passing. i wish she gave out study guides because the chapters we study have nothing to do with the exams she gives us, her exams have spelling errors and she wants us to be perfect!

I have taken many classes in my lifetime and this was by far the hardest class I have ever taken. I read the entirety of ever chapter assigned and still could not get a B. Tests ask questions that are extremely difficult to understand; too much information to study. It felt like I was taking a class at Harvard and this is a community college.

AWFUL! DOCUMENT the many errors/INCORRECT INFORMATION she makes/disseminates in her lectures/guides/materials. Present your case to the dean for a FULL REFUND! Questions on quizzes and exams are sometimes poorly written to a degree that makes them unintelligible. Or contain typos to same end. I'm surprised she and the school haven't been sued.

This Professor gives a lot of things and several very difficult exams. She has no empathy for students.

Debra Bedell should consider that students have lives and responsibilities such as attending other courses, etc. The only reason I say this it's because she won't give the students enough time to complete assignments and study for those weekly quizzes or exams. I would never take any of her BIO or MICRO classes at NSCC.

This is the worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't care about your life outside of school or if you work she doesn't give enough time on tests. The test have like 20 questions & she gives you like 16 min to answer them all thats not even a minute per question. shes very strict & won't make exceptions for anything. I would NEVER recommend her.

I have never felt a need to use rate my professor before. I have taken other bio classes at universities and I am at NSCC because I moved out of state and am changing my career. I had to drop this class and take a W. It's harder than it needs to be for a gen Ed class. Just don't take her classes

I have worked in a professional biology lab before taking Debra Bedell's Bio class. Even with that experience I am currently failing her class and considering just dropping it as I have A's in all my other classes. She puts questions that aren't covered in class or in the homework's on the tests and quizzes. DONT DO IT!

Do not take this class the professor is inadequate to teach. Her assignments do not work the correct way and her test don't cover the same material we are given. It is unfortunate for everyone in this class talked to a few students on a couple test and they got 30%. This is not a reflection on students but the teacher.

Do not take this course with her unless you want to teach yourself biology. Many students including myself where confused when she was speaking due to the fact she does not cover anything in the chapter or assignments. Many of the students failed the tests for that reason. She is confusing herself and the students during class time.

Had many issues communicating with her over the testing sites she uses. She does not go over topics completely and mostly speaks in nonsense when explaining. She doesn't understand what she is trying to explain to students and expects students to already be a biology pro. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you want to feel overwhelmed and confused

After 6 wks of busting my A$$ i had to drop her class because i was failing. I went to her a few times to express my worries with failing all her exams and she basically told me i am studying too much information, yet the information we are given on the lectures dont help you pass the tests. If anyone has any advise on an easy Bio teacher lmk!

Exams are almost impossible with a strict/quick time limit. Went to tutoring and it did not even help. Had to drop her class it wasn't worth the stress as much as i tried.

Deb Bedell shouldn't be a professor. She often goes on unimportant tangents during lectures. Quite frankly I don't think she knows the material she is teaching. She is very unclear when explaining things. Take her class if you've been a biologist and you'd probably still fail. She doesn't care that community college is supposed to be more flexible.

This professor is a menace. Released the content late, tests on content not covered, adds trick questions, does not use the SmartBook, the lectures were posted online 7 years ago, and the answer key is often wrong. I invested dozens of hours each week to get that A. Exhausting and frustrating.

This professors approach is hard and discouraging, with very difficult exams. She hides behind being “old school” while setting students up for failure. She expects students to teach themselves entire chapters. It is unacceptable that the school allows this to continue, disregarding student success. A review of her teaching methods is long overdue.

An embarrassment to academia. She thinks she's precise enough to write trick questions, but she's error-prone enough that You never know which is a trick question or just gross incompetence. Tests on stuff not taught. Poor quality lectures. She either mumbles or she misspeaks-corrects-misspeaks-corrects so much that you cannot make out the lesson.

Do not recommend this professor. Her quizzes and exams are proctored and what is on the quizzes and exams is not what you learn. When you reach out to her to ask a question, she gives very short answers like she cannot be bothered. If I had known what I know now I would have dropped the class immediately.

Quizzes and tests are proctored. Professors uses all fill in the blank questions. There are no multiple choices. Study ALL terminology and every vocabulary word. Lectures are online. They can suddenly stop and not finish. You are tested on everything, not just on lecture material or lab material. MEMORIZE as much as you can! Good luck!

She knows biology well, but the way she evaluates students is frustrating. I spent hours studying for this class, but my grade doesn't match the effort I'm putting in. The material does not match what shows up on the quizzes. The quiz time limits are also stressful. It feels impossible to do well. Sometimes I only pass by luck and a god's miracle

Avoid Professor Bedell at all costs. Grading is MOSTLY online tests, which are proctored. Questions are meant to trick you. Memorization is key; if you are bad at memorization, don't even look in the direction of this class. Good luck to everyone!
