This lady is unreal. Tests extremely long and hard. Drop the class!
i really hope they are not paying her a lot!!!
Very good teacher, willing to help students.
B-O-R-I-N-G, unimaginative, dull, mumbles, should be reviewed and fired
Great teacher, always willing to help. gives a notebook for exams!
good prof. helpful. tests are memorization. very flexible on tests
Best prof!!! Works hard and teaches well
very willing to help and class was easy
easy, memorization and u get a "A"
BORING but easy with memorization
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. She reads directly out of the book
THIS IS A 100 LEVEL CLASS and she teaches like it is a 400
Always willing to help you get an A... gives 2nd, even 3rd chances
No Comments
She teaches it as if it was a 400 level class...Boring, take with someone else!!
Very interesting class, easy tests and always helpful with clarity.
Turned Health into Biotechnology. Way too in depth for a 100 level course.
biotech wasn't what i expected. nice lady. hard quizzes.. just go to class
The class was boring, prof is a 400 level teacher teaching to nonscience majors
Very helpfuland caring. Quizes kinda hard. A bit too in depth for this class.
Friendly instructor, knowledgable, simple lab
pretty easy class. hardly went and got a B. turn in assignments and you're good
Lecture notes are very very unorganized because she jumps around and there is NO format to them. Tests are pretty easy if you attend lectures!
hard class, nice prof. willing to help and doesnt make you feel bad if you have a lot of questions or are having a hard time
Turned capstone into a really fun class, take her!
She seemed very unorganized as her notes had no order to them. All her exams were essay format that did not seem to follow the structure of the class or book. She applies everything to her lab work(talk about that a lot on your hw and quizzes).
I didn't go to this class for a month straight and maybe a total of 10 lectures all semester and still got a B. do the study guides and the class is a joke.
Her class is boring but that is because of the information being covered. Class is an easy A if you do all the assignments. Overall she is a nice caring lady.
Should be an easy A. Prof Burg is a very sweet lady but honestly it is a boring class. Save your money, you don't need to buy the book!
Most boring class ever, expressionless lectures. definately do not take this at 8 in the a.m. make friends in this class, so you can take turns going to class and sharing notes, thats what i did, got an A.
Nice person, BORING teacher! Would not take class with instructor again. Notes are very unorganized. Find someone else to take class with!!!
Yeah, she was a litle unorganized, but really not that bad of a prof. I think this class is probably pretty boring with any prof. She is a very sweet lady if you take the time to talk to her. Study the notes, don't really need book, and you will do fine.
Nice lady and very knowledgeable about what she's teaching. Class a little boring but she is more than willing to help you understand if you don't get something. Tests are a little difficult but still straight forward. Study the material and you should be fine.
class starts out pretty easy but gets harder. Debra does a decent job with the class. i would take your own notes cuz you wont be able to follow along with the notes provided. I have heard she is easer than the other micro profs.
Good teacher!! Tells you everything you need to know for each exam and offers a lot of extra credit. Material is interesting and she knows it well. Take her!
The woman is very nice and easy. First test is very easy but the 2nd and 3rd are a little more unclear but still easy. Final is so easy and she gives a lot of assignments that are so easy. Class is boring but take her because you'll get an A or B no problem.
It doesn't seem like she cares at all about what she's teaching! In class she's very monotone and tends to go off on tangents, you don't learn the material in the classroom - you have to be willing to take the time to read the book if you want to actually learn anything/do well on the tests. Also, she's very vague when answering questions.
Burg is a great professor, always willing to answer questions and help outside of class. Science is difficult for me, but she finds ways to make it understandable to even me!
Nice professor. Lectures are boring and sometimes hard to follow. She gives extra credit which helps a lot. So show up to class and take the quizes.
This was a fairly easy class. Her study guide was very clear and easy to fallow. The exams were all short answer but easy. There was one presentation and a couple small assignments.
AWESOME prof! She can be kinda monotone, but she'll warm up to the class and make jokes to keep the everyone awake. It's a very straightforward class, like BIO 120 all about bacteria with an occasional virus basically. But it's interesting and she makes it as easy as humanly possible! Take her if you can! Just don't neglect to study for her final.
Prof. Burg is a very nice lady but tends to be boring. She got caught up on several topics which pushed us behind, but did a good job making sure everyone understood the material. Late on getting assignments back. Overall, a good prof.
Good professor. As long as you do your part, she'll do hers. If you read the book before you go to class, it will be easy to follow along. Overall, she makes the class easy and you can make it easier if you do your part.
She was very nice and tried to make the material interesting to us. Tests were of average difficulty, and there was very rarely homework. She offered extra credit if you needed it.
I had her for BMS 410 and BMS 301. Her 410 class was awesome and fun, she is a bit wordy and quiet, but she will go out of her way to help. Her exams were pretty easy. Her 301 was boring, but all are. Her exams were all essay. But the assignments are easy. Overall I would go to her office hours for anything, she will help by curving your grade!
Professor Burg does a pretty lacking job communicating with non-science majors, and doesn't take great interest in student success. The worst thing is that material covered in class is glossed over on tests, and instead you have to try to use what you learned to draw new conclusions and extrapolate, and you're graded harshly if you're wrong.
Great teacher. the course is hard but she will help you understand the material.
Dr. Burg is a fantastic professor. Really cares about her students. Make time to go to her office hours, she's a huge help and likes when you reach out to her if you need help. The material is not too hard but you need to put in the time to study and learn it.
She explains thing very well in class and her coursework schedule is eligible to change based on the pace in class. She has weekly review sessions that are very helpful. The tests have a variety of questions but tend to be fair. She is willing to listen to your opinion on answers and award points if she sees your point of view. Take her.
Was a very good prof as far as helping students understand the material! Tests are hard, and the classes are all hand written note sessions so have to be there. Great prof, but hard class.
Molecules of Life was supposed to be a life science class for non-science majors. She was way too detailed for non-science majors. She gets off topic and the material on the exams don't exactly correspond to what was talked about in class.
Dr. Burg made a fairly boring class bearable. Never bought the book. Go to class, take good notes-she gives exam review sheets-use them! Projects are a breeze. Easy class but you have to make an effort. Very fair grader but slooooww getting things back. For the final, go to her office and ask her questions- she basically gives you the questions.
Prof. Burg is an amazing teacher for microbiology. She really knows her stuff, and is very clear in lectures about what will be on exams. Only things she mentions in class are on exams. You definitely have to study for exams, but if you do, you will be fine. Really enjoyed her as a professor. Highly recommend.
She is a very genuine person. The class is easy to pass if you do the assignments and projects. Small reading assignments throughout the semester along with one group project.
Dr. Burg offers lots of help to students including review guides, weekly (optional) review sessions and optional assignments. Downside? The content of this course is VERY DIFFICULT. Make sure your class attendance is high and you read the book! She looks for big picture conceptualization, not just memorizing. She is tons of help at office hours.
Loved professor Burg for micro! She gives words to know and study guides for each exam (I would stay up to date and not procrastinate with these)I would go to her office hours once a week and she was incredibly helpful. Also gives out random pop quizzes for extra credit.
This class is a lot of work and memorization no matter which way you slice it, but she gives it to you straight in terms of what she wants you to know for the test. Her lectures are monotonous sometimes, but I developed a passion for this subject through this class. Thanks Professor Burg! :) Did not use the textbook, although she recommended it.
She is very direct about what is on the exams. The book is more for a reference when studying. She posts all of the notes and study guides at the beginning of the semester. She understands that we aren't science majors and uses a lot of examples. She gives a hefty amount of extra credit, so there is a nice cushion for your grade. Very nice lady :)
Her notes are kind of all over the place, but she gives study guides for exams which are really helpful. Tests aren't super tough, but you definitely need to study. Your grades comes from tests and a group project. She's really nice and understanding, and gives opportunities for extra credit. Subject matter is kind of dry, but overall she's good.
No due dates for papers. Sounds awesome until you are scrambling to read a book, write a book review, and about 3 other papers in the last week of classes. Lectures were pointless, basically just 1 hour and 15 minutes of people arguing about their opinions on matters of which they have no experience. (We talked about mental illness 75% of the time)
3 exams, 1 final. Optional Assignments given for credit, but I chose not to do them. Material is very challenging, so be prepared to study 5+ hours a week to get ready for exams. I didn't read the book at all, just studied notes from lecture and did well. Lectures are recorded and posted on BB, along with study guides and outlines to take notes on.
Dr. Burg is one of my favorite professors. She is so nice and helpful. She posts study guides for exams that cover everything that will be on the exam. Book was not necessary, but I used it to supplement the notes while studying and did well in her class! Best micro prof at GV!
Dr. Burg was very bad at responding to emails. She has a short fuse and once you blow it, that's it for the rest of the semester. I would recommend taking anyone else.
Burg teaches science to anyone like they are science majors. She knows what she's talking about, but isn't particularly good at communicating it, especially since her speaking voice is just above a whisper. Also, some of the hardest tests I've ever taken.
Awful, don't take her unless you have to. Drones on for hours with a whisper of a voice. No intonation either, does she even care about the subject? Clearly not. One of the worst professors I have had in terms of keeping up with grading and communication as well. Beware!
She provides a notes outline, which is helpful, but her powerpoint slides are not very directive. I find that I don't know how to categorize what she's saying and it's hard to figure out what is important to know. She knows her stuff and provides current research information, but is a tough professor. Lectures are recorded, but I would go to class.
Didn't really use the book other than to supplement some notes she skipped. Gives study guides and vocab lists and the study guides are somewhat helpful but there they don't go as in depth as she does on exams. Micro is a hard class be prepared to work for it.
Prof. Burg is so sweet and kind. She truly wants her students to do well. Get to know her and visit her outside of class. Must study for exams cause they are not easy.
I would prefer to take Burg over the other professors, but that does not mean much. All the professors are not ideal especially for this advanced course. The exams were extremely focused on very specific topics so you really need to know the material inside and out in order to pass. Not warm and fuzzy but helpful in office hours.
Extremely dedicated to her students. She has review sessions, records lectures, and even came in for extra office hours the Sat. before finals! Doesn't use power point much, and lecture can be a bit hard to follow, but the book was helpful when I didn't understand the material in lecture. Exams included essay questions, so be prepared to study!
BMS 212 is a tough class to begin with, and there are not many good profs. Burg is definitely the best option. She gives extra credit quizzes/activities occasionally, and she provides review sessions every single week to help better understand concepts. In addition, she records her lectures so that you can review them. She's very understanding.
She is awesome! The class is tough but she made it so easy to see her outside of class and was very helpful when doing that. She explained things well in general, easy to learning from. She kept on topic and always made sense. Love her!
Really cares about your learning and understanding. She makes the class as interesting and informative as possible. She posts her slides and recordings of lectures, but most people that relied on those got behind and failed. Go to class and try your best to actively engage in class and it will be your favorite part of the week!!! Loved her so much!
For lectures, she reads from her own notes and only have pictures to present to you. It's really hard to follow, she doesn't explain things well. Wasn't very friendly when I went to go see her in office hours. The exams are also difficult. She has essay questions and even though you write everything you learned in class, it would be half credit.
Going in as a non-science major into a science class can be intimating, but she selects and teachings the material so well. She is very understanding and will also work to help her students succeed. Gives helpful study guides for each exam and will hold study sessions with students, too. Expectations are always clear. amazing prof and class!
Professor Burg is one of the kindest profs I've had at GVSU. She is very caring and goes out of her way to make sure you understand the material. She even has exam study sessions outside of class that help A LOT. You have extra credit opportunities and the exams are not difficult if you study the guide. She also makes the material very interesting.
Dr. Burg is the sweetest gem there is! She is extremely understandable and accessible. She posts recordings of her lecture, but randomly gives out attendance in-class worksheets, so go to class! Hard test questions and there are short essays for exams but if you write down main points of a process and details from the book, you will get all points.
She was great! I took this class specfically for her (I had her for Micro 212) She is an all around awesome professors. Gives you opportunity to change you grade, cares if you learn, super accessible, gives good notes, and makes the class interesting!
I absolutely loved my class with her. It was in part because the material was so interesting but also because she presented the material in such a straight forward and easy to understand way. Her lecture may be monotone at times but other than that she is a great professor and I definitely recommend her!
I would definitely take her class again. Dr. Burg is very caring and straightforward about grading and expectations. She gives very helpful study guides, and as a person who hates biology, this was a biology class I actually enjoyed. If you go to class and do the study guides, it's an easy A.
Her lectures are rough bc she has a very sleep-inducing voice but when going over her PowerPoint presentations and lecture videos she gives very good explanations. Her syllabus indicated I think 10 quizzes or something and we only had 3 in the end. Also stated we would have multiple assignments, only had one. Exams are tough but not meant to trick.
Dr. Burg is one of the best professors I have ever had at GVSU! Her lectures are well structured and she truly cares that you learn the material well. Very accessible and responds to emails in a timely manner. Exams are directly from study guides practically, make sure you study and go to class! Records her lectures too!
Dr. Burg is an amazing professor. She cares so much about your success and will work with you through anything. Her capstone course was a walk in the park and so much fun. Grade is based on a few papers, discussions, and assignments, all extremely doable and fun. I am beyond grateful that I took her for my capstone section & I would recommend it.
This class is an easy A, but you will not know your grade until the end of the semester (slow grader). She cares a lot about her students and is a great person. That said, I personally was always very bored in her class.
Dr. Burg is one of my favorite professors. She really makes sure her students learn the material rather than memorize. She gives plenty of supplemental material, however you do need to put in the same effort in return. She is so willing to help. In lecture she is quiet, so sit towards the front of the class so you can hear. Love her!
She is a really great person who cares about her students and is very accessible when you need help. Sometimes her lectures were disorganized and slide order was different even though I printed the slides the night before lecture. It's a tough class, you'll have to study a lot, but Dr. Burg is a good prof to have
I studied very minimally in this class and ended up with an A. She is very clear during lecture about what is going to be on the tests and what is not. My suggestion would be type as she talks in class and make flashcards on the things she deems important. Never opened a book or went to office hours, slides are very straight forward.
Dr. Burg is an absolutely wonderful professor. She really cares that her students actually learned and enjoyed teaching it too. The slides are straightforward and her study guides/term list tell you exactly what to study for on the exams. She is very easy to reach with office hours and discussions hosted every Friday after class. Amazing Prof!!!
I loved professor Burg, she is very kind and easy to reach outside of class. She is very knowledgeable in immunology and gives video lectures for if you missed class. Nevertheless, this is a very hard class. She gives you all the resources you need but it is a LOT of material.
