The course load is tremendous. don't take this if you have less that 25 hours a week to study. She is really nice but the class is very hard.
she really nice, but her lecture is not that useful and her test kind of tricky
She does a great job at explaining things. This is a hard class period! but she makes it fun. Her lectures are easy to follow and she is helpful in biology. She listens well to her students.
This class is hard period but deb is really excited in her teaching. She actually cares about her students and makes an effort to help u as much as she can. I would def recommend her for this class!!
Dr. Carlson is an excellent instructor. She is helpful in the lab and does what she can with a very rigid program. If at all possible take this course at another school. The amount of work required is extreme and the number of students who drop/withdraw is high. (It is possible to get an A in this course, but be prepared to work for it).
Deb helped make the course somewhat easier to grasp, and she was very easy to approach and ask for help. Her lectures are somewhat boring but i think that comes w/ the subject matter. She seems to really care about her students success in the course. Warning this class is SUPER hard because of the amount of info you are expected to learn.
Deb is very easy to approach, is clear, and does what she can to make a hard class easier..however, there is a ton of info and YOU are the one who has to want to do well and devote the time. She truly DOES have a passion for the subject and it shows. she is GREAT and very knowledgable in lab too.
she is very helpful when you approach her, but her notes are somewhat disorganized. It is a hard class to begin with, I wish she would be more organized with her notes and her time.
needs to do things on time!!!
She is tough. I hate the fact that spelling counted on our lab quizes but she is good. Before taking this class from her, make sure you have a lot of time to devote to lab and studying. I would also advise that you come in with a good chemistry and biology background.
I don't know who assigned her to be an instructor for this class. She is the worst teacher ever. She is never organized. Doesn't test on what she lectures on. Doesn't grade fairly, has to consult another instructor because she is not capable of giving her own grade. She makes the class very hard to grasp because she uses her PHD level teaching.
I don't like people who don' t study and blame the instructor for that. Debra is one of the best biology teachers on campus.
She is way too picky. Class load was way too much.
She is not the greatest teacher. She was ok for anatomy, but gets very tricky with her exams. She tests something that is not taught. She is very unorganized and unclear. I would advise her against phys. because she doesn't test fairly according to what she is teaching. She uses Level 4 testing, and yet her teaching's at level zero.
Very good teacher. She's a little unorganized with her notes, but she really cares about her students and really wants to teach and help u to understand the material. She is the only professor I've known (I have a 4 yr degree from another school) that takes the time to get to know ALL her students and their names. Phys is hard, you have to study
I've taken human physiology with Debra. She wasn’t really helpful, but she is very nice person))). You should be ready to memorize both the book and her notes. You never know what she is going to test you on. Very hard class.
I have never had a confused teacher like this one before. Her exams are so hard i wonder where she gets them from but not from her lecture and textbook hell no. if u wanna take this teacher at our own risk dont even bother buying the books coz it is of no use.teaching at a graduate school. This class has same grading method like Michael Reutter's.
She hands out a guideline before her exams. Follow that and you will get an A. I did. I can't believe the people who are complaining that you don't know what she tests you on. geesh
don't what this person is talking about, obviously a personal friend of this instuctor. Deb Carlson does not give her study guides on time and she was always unwilling to even offer them. Both anatomy and physiology she was very lazy to get her tests or quizzes graded. To get any info from her, was like pulling teeth. I would not take her at all!
Dr. Carlson is kind, very willing to help students who want to learn and interested in the success of her students. Projects were fun and hard work. Tests are at times a bit unclear to me. I would take a class from her, she is a good instructor. Take good notes during lectures, as she allows discussion and lecture doesn't always follow outline.
Involved, caring wonderful teacher, one of the best human beings I have taken a class from. Very kind. A bit disorganized with regard to following lecture outline and tests were not written as clearly as they could be, but the project work was fun and she was always willing to help students when they needed it. No free ride- Expect to work HARD!
Worst instructor I have ever had. Do not waste your time or money. Lectures are very unorganized, disjointed, unclear, not interesting or engaging whatsoever. Outdated presentation skills, still uses an overhead projector for lectures. This class is geared toward pre-med only.
Excellent professor! Dr. Carlson is the best Anatomy professor at NCC. She is not easy and is very upfront about how challenging the course is. Enthusiastically presents the material and is always available and welcoming of questions. Other Anatomy professors at NCC can be arrogant and insulting, but Dr. Carlson appears to truly enjoy teaching.
Good Teacher, teaches well sometimes makes mistakes, tests focus on lecture. One of the best Biology teachers i have had!
Dr Carlson is a neat biology professor. I appreciated the lectures being delivered like bedtime stories. The 1st day, Dr C strongly recommended NOT taking BIOL1141 if there's a lot of stuff going on in our life. Unfortunately, I did not listen & eventually ended up withdrawing. So listen to her, before embarking on this most difficult subject!
Great teacher! Cares about her students learning about the body. You study her notes you will do fine.
Excellent professor. The notes she posts online are very helpful. Read ahead and add to the notes she posts, this was VERY helpful. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in lab and work hard. She is very easy to approach for help, and she cares about her students and wants them to understand the material.
thought her tests were impossibly difficult-be prepared to draw alot of rediculous diagrams, she never covered lab material in lecture-but tested on it, was overly critical when grading lab reports, very delinquent about posting grades, always behind on lecturing. But hey she's a nice person...I'd think twice about taking phys from her...
Take a look at the grammar and spelling of the students who rate Dr. Carlson poorly to get an idea of why they had problems. Dr. Carlson's instructions and expectations are crystal clear and she is available if you have questions. This is an extremely challenging subject and you will have to work very hard to get high grades on labs and tests.
She's a great teacher for anatomy. Very clear and concise. However, for physiology i'd think twice before taking her. Everyone that has taken her for that class that i know of hasn't gotten higher then a B!!!!!
Contrary to a previous reviewer, I took Dr. C for Phys. and got an A, as did a few of my classmates. Dr. C is a great professor teaching an extremely challenging class. You must work your butt off just to pass. Dr. C adds special office hours just for Phys students who have questions; use them wisely and work hard and you will do fine.
I agree with the most recent person. Anatomy and physiology is enevitably going to be difficult and intense. She is always there for anything. Yes, her notes and lectures are somewhat disorganized. Just make sure you pay attention, go to class, read the book, and do the labs, they help understand things. Very nice also.
this pro is very helpful. i took her anatomy class which was very challenging me. but you i have to work hard. take this instructor.
She is a great professor. She knows what she is teaching and her lectures are interesting. Class is pretty easy since there is no thinking, just memorizing.
Although Carlson may talk to you in lecture like you're 5 years old (basic baby talk and inane questions like "Its stretchy. What else is stretchy? Is a Rubber Band stretchy??"), her tests are extremely detailed and in respect to her lectures seem coming out of nowhere. Also, the quizzes are BEFORE you cover the material in lecture, so frustrating!
I took Hendrickson and had to drop because she was such a horrible teacher. Carlson is so refreshing. She explains things well, her exam tests were easy. If you follow her notes and correspond in the text what she talked about in lecture you will do fine. Lab is hard work, so ask questions. I highly recommend taking her for BIO classes.
Great teacher. Grade A is not only possible, but generously feasible. No surprises on exams, just what she says in class. Read the chapter before class, that helps a lot. Lab exams are harder, go to lab already prepared, and ask, ask, ask. Class is not easy but it's not hard, either. Previous comments are totally unjustified. Highly recommend her.
she is horrible in pysiology, does teach with alot of guess work, she always runs back and forth to get some clarifications from doctor REUTER. above that she is fond of favoring some dishes out points to people she likes which is very unprofessional in my view. take other guys who are more knowlegeable about the subject
She is one of those professors that takes attendance for no apparent reason. Everything is taken out of the text or her printed notes, so you wouldn't attend other than she forces you to. Getting points is like chasing nickels down the sewer, except if she likes you. I have over 200 sem credits in my life, one of the worst teachers I've ever had.
GREAT TEACHER, NOT EASY BUT THEN AGAIN ANATOMY ISNT EITHER. SHE GENUINELY CARES ABOUT YOUR SUCCESS. CHALLENGES YOU FOR THE BETTER!! LECTURES ARE GREAT AND INFORMATIVE. -SMG
Dr. Debra teaches anatomy/phys and does great job in anatomy teaching. not because she knows the met but memorizes and delivers from there. In phys i had to pick so many questions she marked wrong but ended up finding from the book they are correct and discuss with her but told let me ask Dr. Rut.. so avoid her phys class if you want learn and ear
Took Anatomy w/her this summer because she seems to have high ratings than others. Total mistake to take this class in summer. Class is too intense and accelerated w/ 2 exams per week! The last week of class has 3 exams including final. More than half the students in my class dropped. Prof. is not lenient at all. DO NOT take this class in summer!!!
Great teacher! Outstanding enthusiasm about the material. She has a reputation for being the best and definitely delivers. BUT you have to be responsible and put in the time studying.
Debra is the best science teacher I have had since starting at NCC. The class is hard and she is very strict. She is very clear about questions and what she expects from you. I had Jurney for Phys this semester and had to drop because his tests were impossible and his class averages were 56%. With Debra I was able to get a good grade and suceed.
She's NOT helpfull at all, she pretends to be all nice about things but when you actually go to her office she doesn't care, has no patient, spelling counts so if you miss a letter she takes points away, she demands respect and makes students call her DR.Really?!I loved physiology but taking it with her was a really bad mistake! So please avoid her
This teacher was terrible, when I asked for clarity she told me that it was easy so I had to go find it myself, not to mention the fact that she counts spelling and she doesn't see your effort! she tries to fail students, avoid taking human anatomy and physiology with her! Just stay away!!
Professor Carlson is a great teacher. Would love grades sooner after tests, etc. Also, points for labs should count for more of your grade because you put in tons of time for them. (not 5 pts) Hard class, but possible.
ANATOMY is hard, Dr. Carlson is not the hard part. I agree that lab points should go more toward your grade since you spend so much time studying for it, but the labs are very clear on what to expect. Exams are hard, but she does give you a review sheet to study from. Takes most exam test q's from her notes.
I took anatomy with Deb during summer session. This class is very intense at the accelerated pace!!! I would only recommend it if you have no obligations or job to interefere with studying! I thought she was great, very enthusiastic about the subject, but I didnt like the format of the class (only points are exams, no instruction in lab)
I completed both Anatomy and Physiology with Dr. Carlson. I thought she was tough but competent, knowledgeable and available. My only issues with Dr. Carlson would be her tendency toward condescension and her long turn around times for grading. The material is difficult and the courses require a great deal of time, dedication and commitment.
I do NOT recommend her. Our class was consistently behind (like 5 lectures or more) than all other anatomy classes. She knew we were behind and didn't do anything to improve this. She was very distracted and talked about irrelevant subjects (like make-up and possums)To add to it she was terrible with answering questions. Not helpful in lab either.
Deb is pretty awesome, although you need to keep up with the topics. I took her accelerated Anatomy over the summer and it was amazing; she's very clear with what you need to know for exams, and her lab practicals are fair, although difficult. She's very good at responding to email whatever time of day.
she is very helpful in lab,but her exams are tough. just study hard and ask for alot of clarification on things you do not understand. As a person she is great.
Dr. Carlson was very approachable and helpful when help was needed. She wrote notes on an overhead for us to copy as she lectured. Her tests came from her lecture notes-if it wasn't in our notes, it wasn't on the test. Show up for class and you'll do fine on her tests. She also gave partial credit for lab practical misspellings.
Straightforward. Study her lecture notes, attend class, you will do well.
Deb is an awesome teacher. She is funny and certainly articulate and detailed about the material. I HIGHLY recommend her to anyone looking to take anatomy. She is one of the BEST teachers I've ever had since attending college. I had her for anatomy section 1141 it will be switched to section 2041 starting the fall 2013.
She is very organize, clear and punctual. Very fair. Her notes is clear and posted well in advance. Attendance is taken for financial aid purposes. You cannot ask questions during her exams. Very meticulous regarding exams, assigned seats for all exams. The exams come directly from the notes/lecture. Multiple choice & fill in the blank exam
Great professor. High expectations. Very difficult class, but she gives you fair warning during first session. Tests are from lecture notes, lots to memorize. Go to class, study hard and often. Grades come from tests/practicals, no assignments.
Very helpful and always immediate to attend to student needs. For practicals, Dr Carlson is always on top as to what is necessary for student to know. She had command in the subject during lectures. Her exams questions are always from her notes.
I am re-taking this course at another college. Night and day! Carlson is NOT clear, belittling to students and not helpful at all. I wanted to learn and she didn't want to teach. She loves to play games with test questions, which is not the point. I don't want to be tricked, I just want clear instruction.
Very Good teacher, very helpful. She explains your questions very well in her office hours. She is very organized.Study guide is really helpful,it tells you what you should study for the exams.Human physiology is not an easy class;you have to study a lot to get your favorite score. Book is really helpful to undrestand the material better.
Overall, I would recommend Anatomy with Deb. Her tests come 100% from lecture - I didn't crack the text once. Lab is self-directed and involve a lot of microscopy. She is a cell biologist and it shows - I would have preferred a gross anatomy class.
Took the easiest Biology class at Normandale thinking it would be easy but I was wrong. Her lectures suck and she goes off topic sometimes. I barely learned anything from her, I basically self taught myself everything. But exams and homework's are pretty straightforward. Also she is always behind on updating grades. Try to avoid taking her class!
Makes the course too difficult, and not that helpful.
I LOVE DEB! I wish she can be my teacher for every science class. She is clear in what she wants you to know for the exam. The lectures are phenomenal. Just go to lectures and take notes and you will do well on your exam.I personally read the text and fill in her lecture notes that I don't understand. She can really teach!
Deb was okay when i took her. She was rude to me one time in biology lab.. i just needed help and she was busy setting up her anatomy lab so she snapped at me for asking her something.. I thought she made noteslecture pretty clear she just needs to chill out with her attitude towards people.. kind of a know it all.
She was very helpful and was happy to answer my questions. Her lectures were easy to follow and she allowed plenty of time for lab. Grades homework quickly and provides study guides for each test, which saved me every time.
If you're going to taken Human Anatomy, please don't look any further. Take it with her!! She is the only anatomy professor at Normandale that is fair and specific. She goes over some parts of lab in lecture! If you ask her questions in lab; she would be glad to answer. You can print off her notes as well! I wish she taught every biology course!
I started off in Jurney's class then quickly switched to Deb's and I'm SO glad I did! Deb is great! She knows her stuff and is willing to help you if you want to learn. If you are a textbook reader, print off the notes she puts online, go to class, THEN read the parts of the text that she covered in class. She skips a lot of the a lot of info
She is a very good teacher but expect to do some learning outside the classroom. Her tests are tough but there are not surprises. If you know everything on the lecture notes, you can get away with not reading the book.
Love Dr. Carlson's teaching methods. She is very patient, helpful and a good grader. The exams come from her lectures's notes and she gives extra credit questions on the exam too. Expect lots of memorialization for lab and trust me, it wasn't that terrible! As long as you read your textbook, and lectures notes, you will definitely pass her class.
Deb is an amazing professor. She will give you help you if are unsure about the material and I would definitely recommend her!
I did get an A, which was of no help from her. In summer classes teachers have to be organized, and she is not. Everyday she kept us after class for up to 10 min because she had gone off on a tangent and gotten us behind. On the last lecture day she STARTED teaching the reproductive system with 3 min left of class, the final was the next day.
Debra made everything relate to real life which made it more fun to listen in class. Lectures and material are very organized. She provides outlines, you fill in a few notes, and the exams are essentially just off of those notes. I wish I had just bought the lab manual but shared the expensive main textbook with a friend.
Deb is an amazing professor. Even though her classes are rather difficult she makes you want to engage and do the work.
I love the way Deb teaches. She has an outline to follow and if you show up for class and take notes during her lectures, you will know exactly what is on the test. The class is still challenging, but it's not a guessing game. She makes everything very clear. The lab practicals are challenging so ask a lot of questions during lab.
Crazy! If you want to do it your self, do it! if you want to play games, do it! In the beginning, you better be really good at biology! so, if you need it just for the extra credit go, but that will be a hard one! if you would like to know anything, just used to read and understand on your own and + everything what she gives at the class.
Debra was a fantastic professor. The class was tough, REALLY tough, but if you are willing to show up to lecture, take notes, and participate in labs, you will be respected by this professor and she will be more willing to help you when you're struggling. I hated this class at first, but once I started studying harder, I really enjoyed myself :)
I find deb to be very rude to her students at times. She is kind of fake and when you ask her questions in lab she gives very vague answers that don't help. This class is ALL about reading the book. every. chapter. If you don't read the book, you will be lost because her lectures are her expecting you to know exactly what she is talking about.
Professor Deb is an amazing professor. If you're the type of person who learns from going to lecture and taking notes, you will do great in her class (like me). That being said, her exams are based quite heavily on her lecture power points. Overall, her class is difficult with lots of material, but she's also a great professor and approachable.
I love Dr. C! The class is difficult, but you can't go into a biology class for a major and expect not to work and study hard. She's really approachable, has study guides that you fill in during lecture and everything on there will be on her tests. I opened the text book maybe twice. Labs are intense and very detailed. She does a few pop quizzes
I love Dr. C! The class/labs are difficult, but you can't take a bio major class & expect not to work hard. She's very approachable, has study guides you fill in during lecture and everything on them will be on her tests. I opened the text maybe twice. She does a few pop Q's but drops the lowest. I had her for anatomy too, wish she taught at UofM.
Dr. Carlson is very knowledgeable on the subject. She does a great job of laying out necessary information during lecture. Her study guides help to outline the chapter. If you fill them out as you read the chapter and understand everything in the study guide you should be in good standing for the tests.
Debra is a nice teacher overall. Her exams are a bit tough and long but she is willing to give you advice if you stop by at her office hours. I ended up getting a A almost a B. I often go to her office hours and ask about what is bothering me when i dont understand because english isnt my first language. Debra's tips helped me throughout semester
Deb is a very kind and approachable teacher overall. The hardest part about her class is the pre lab quizzes. You have to read the whole lab and basically memorize it and watch and memorize the videos as well.
Deb is a great professor, the exams questions were easy to understand and reflects the study guides. She is able to explain complex concepts in a simple way. During covid-19 Deb was very accommodating, and tried her best to make things easy for us. The test questions did get harder but its expected, and still reflects her recorded lectures.
Debra teaches slowly and so carefully, some people like her relaxed lectures, but some might feel like "okay we get it, move on and teach faster". she made anatomy less intense. Shes great at explaining concepts, she relates everything to real life things, and it clicks fast and you get it. Her exams are alot and hard. she had pop quizzes.
I took this class during fall of 2020 so thanks to COVID-19, the entire class was online making this class a nightmare to try and understand. Dr. Carlson did a great job trying to make it work for all the students. She is very insightful and understanding. The only thing is that she offers NO extra credit. Not even one or two points.
She's not the worse professor that I've had, but I would never take this class again. Of course, this class is going to be tough, but it just gets to be too much at times. She didn't adjust the amount of work for online learning so it got really rough at times. Tough tests and very detail orientated. Be prepared to work hard, but you'll live
I would definitely take another class with Dr. Carlson! She had difficulties adapting to an online environment, but overall did a great job. Assignments were relevant and helped me learn. She posted pre-recorded lectures each week that did a great job summarizing key concepts. Tests were open note and detailed, but overall were not too difficult.
Deb is an awesome professor! You definitely should attend lecture as she gives good analogies to help you understand the material in this class. If you have questions or need clarification on something, she's very helpful outside class as well. I would take a class with her again in a second.
Dr. Carlson is fine, if you follow instructions and read you will do fine. But the homework assignments (Pearson) are extremely long and do not enrich your understanding. She uses honorlock, which does not allow you to work on exams in a room with any other noise or people. Exams are detail and fact based rather than understanding based.
Debra is a very nice lady. She gives you clear instructions for what she expects you to do each week (it was an online class). There's a lot of homework. There's also bi-weekly quizzes, discussion posts. Get ready to do a lot of reading. But all that homework reinforces your knowledge and tests became easier.
This review is for the 4 week Summer Bio 1501 course, it is far faster paced than you would normally experience. Dr. Carlson provided study guides, schedules, etc that made the work one needed to do incredibly clear. She was also understanding of situations that came up where I had to miss a class. Made a hard and exhausting course totally doable.
The class is laid out very clearly with what you need to do and when, with clear links to everything you need. If you fall behind it is your own fault.
Always answered my questions even if they didn't really pertain to class and just were partially applying what we are learning in class or lab that day to the real world. Her doing this allowed me to explore biology in a way that I'd never thought I'd get in a college classroom and sparked my curiosity about biology more than I ever thought possible
She cares for the students and is always there when you need help. The class was easy because of her. Since the tests were mostly focused on the study guide, you should be good on the exam if you carefully take notes along with her lecture videos. I didn't open the textbook even once for the whole semester but still passed with an A.
Love her! She is one of the best teachers i have ever had. You will need to do work in this class, but if you are willing to do so, you will really learn a lot. She is always willing to help and answer any questions. She clearly wants everyone to succeed. Her video lectures are super helpful and made in a way that is easy to follow.
Never rated professor before, however today I try to make an exception. Highly recommended. Dr Carlson is the best instructor that I have not seen. The lectures are tough, but inspirational, so easy to follow up. Promptly email responses, very organized, I will take another class if I have chance to see her.
She is very nice teacher, exams are hard and detailed based and fact based. A lot of the learning is done on your own through a text book she reviews chapters in class. I would only recommend if you like teaching yourself through a textbook.
Do not take this class
Dr. Carlson is very nice she does not use honor lock in her hybrid class. She does give a decent amount of extra credit so I suggest taking advantage of that. The mid term and final are in person and are difficult. Labs are easy and let's you re do them to help you better understand the material. Failed midterm and final and finished with a B.
Take her for physiology! She was so helpful and gave out a few extra credit items that it bumped me up to an A at the end. Some of the quiz questions were in the midterm/final! Love her lectures and always willing to help. I'd say it's just basic knowledge and pretty straight forward once you get the basics down.
Dr. C is an excellent Physiology professor. I particularly appreciated her recorded lectures; they were very helpful and there was no bluff. Focus on thoroughly understanding her lecture materials for quizzes & exams - they're straightforward without any tricks, and complete all lab assignments. You'll do well. I wish she also taught Microbiology.
Dr. Carlson was super nice. She helps when you ask for it and does give you some resources to help you. Her lectures go a little fast and the tests were very fact based. You are expected to read the textbook on your own and learn most of the material that way.
Professor Carlson's classes involve a lot of textbook work, but if you stay engaged, you'll learn a lot. unstuck ai and the video lectures helped me prepare for the detail-oriented exams.
had a lot of unexpected things happen this semester but debra was VERY flexible with me. only withdrew bc i needed time to focus on life outside of school but will be taking her class again next year. very understanding, flexible, and easy to work with. class isn't too difficult at all.
Overall very flexible class. Good professor. Just make sure to come prepared and learn each concept individually rather all at once. Read the textbook and review the notes outside of class.
She is the best biology prof in the bio department at Normandale I've ever had. She created a lot of chances for her students to redo, 1 to 2 times resubmit after she gives feedback, some extra credits. Lucky to have her class. She's friendly, helpful. Overall, 10000/10 for her. Online class is graded on book assignments, lab, and 4 content exams.
I took Biology 1501 in fall of 2024, she was attentive and supportive! I believe one of if not the best biology professors in the department! Cant wait to take physiology with her!
This professor lies about the exam outlines. She will put things on the current exam that doesnt match up to the outlines. I went to so much tutoring and did so well with the studying, just to take the exam and find that nothing I was told to study was on that exam. I would recommend taking this course at a different school.
Great professor who knows her stuff about biology. Very willing to answer questions, whether just to explain something you didn't understand or to deepen your knowledge. Lectures were interesting but not exemplary, and outlines were provided for them which helped a lot.
I recommend taking 2041 then 2042 back to back. Otherwise you may forget a lot. Both classes are very difficult in different ways, but Dr. Carlson was great. Very nice and caring. Gets back to emails promptly. I would take her again. These classes are difficult so I rated her difficulty on the class alone not necessarily her as a professor.
