Dr. Salmon is really nice, very helpful. My lecture is once a week for 3 hours and it gets a little difficult to follow the material since so much is covered, but she is very nice and always willing to help. We'll see how I do in the class...
I really liked her. She was very sweet and tried to make the material as interesting as possible. She was also very approachable and would answer any question. She was very easy to understand and clear in her notes and lectures. If you pay attention in lecture, take notes, and read the chapters it isn't a bad course at all. Tests weren't bad either
Crystal clear. Even though I rarely attended lecture, she was very clear in the material she covered. The tests were a joke. Just a basic background knowledge will get you a 90% on the tests, so unbelievably easy to get an A.
Janie is a great teacher! Considering the lectures were three hours long, she did an excellent job of keeping everyone's attention and making chemistry even a little bit fun to learn. I recommend her.
Tests were easy. You should read the chapter before class because she can be confusing at times. Still a fun, easy class.
She was a great professor! Although it was a night class, she made chemistry interesting and fun. She's really easy to approach and explains materials well.
Approachable and helpful
Dr. Salmon is very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. During office hours she is aways helpful and can help you understand something that may have been difficult during lecture. The class is not a cake walk. She provides practice exams that are helpful. I would recommend reading the chapters in the textbook after every lecture. Overall very happy
She is very explanative. Good course. Textbook reading was necessary for me.
She is very good. Captivating, interesting, knows her stuff. Overall a great professor.
Very good professor, and her tests are reasonable. She provides a lot of study material to prepare you. I took a 3-hour night class section, and she kept it interesting by incorporating demos, so it wasn't bad at all. She is also very approachable. I would definitely recommend her!
She is very clear when presenting the material and makes class interesting with visual representations. The tests are hard but she provides very helpful practice tests online.
She is so well prepared for class that it is never a waste of time going. She presents the material in a clear, concise way, and she really cares about the class doing well. Take Chem from Salmon!
She is a great lecturer and likes to go slow enough to allow time to take notes. Her lectures can be borderline too slow at times. Tests were easy and plenty of study materials were available.
So many people rave about her on here, but truly, she's not all that great. She's extremely difficult to work with when you do need the help and doesn't really help out with concepts that I at least didn't understand. She really loves Chemistry but lacks the communication skills a professor needs to have during one on one meetings.
Lectures are pretty useless, she just uses problems directly out of the text book and basically reads the textbook to the class. Not worth going to lecture if you plan on reading the book. I had her for both chem I and II . Focus on problems asked from previous exams and study those and understand the process and you'll get an a.
Dr. Salmon teaches right from the book so you're never surprised on exams. She's great about doing practice problems during lecture, and those are the same types of problems you can expect to see on her midterms. As long as you attend lecture and study from the practice exams she puts online you'll be fine. Textbook not mandatory… great professor.
Great professor! She seemed very enthusiastic about the subject and I enjoyed her lectures. The tests were sometimes hard, but chemistry can be difficult sometimes so that's to be expected. You don't really need the book unless you want to do practice problems. Lectures help with clarity of concepts. Overall, she was pretty awesome.
I didn't find her lectures terribly difficult though I did find them somewhat uninteresting. She tries to make sure that she's presenting the subject clearly, but in the general nature of a college science class, the tests are extremely difficult and hard to study for. Make sure to read the book in addition to going to lecture.
If you want to take a class that doesn't match the practice tests what so ever, take Chemistry with Professor Salmon. She completely screwed my grade and GPA over.
Dr. Salmon presented material in a way that covered all topics clearly. She was extremely helpful in office hours for questions that I had. All you have to do to do well in her class is go over the previous exams and read over your notes. She has been my favorite professor that I have had so far at the U. If you need to take chem, take it with her.
Excellent! Dr. Salmon presents the material in a clear, concise manner. Go to class, do the practice exams, and you will learn!
Dr. Salmon is one of the best professors I've had in college. She follows the book exactly and doesn't ever try to trick you in tests. There are a million practice exams and her lectures are extremely organized and clear. Take her!!
I went to Dr. Salmon's lectures in addition to my lectures with Driessen for Chem 1 and Leopold for Chem 2 because she's so clear. After leaving her lectures I wouldn't just know how to calculate delta G I would UNDERSTAND how and why I did certain things. If you can do three hour lectures, pick her without a doubt because it's worth it.
Her tests were difficult for me. However, she was very sweet, had a clear voice, was willing to help you with anything, kept many office hours. She explained the material well and followed the book closely. I greatly recommend her.
She is a good teacher. She clearly explained concepts. I thought her tests were super easy, but I had previously learned most of the material. By the way Debra is her first name but goes by Janie.
She is very attractive and helpful, especially during her office hour. She treats me with respect and tries to explain until I understand the subject. If you study hard and practice a lot, her tests are ridiculously easy. During the class, she explains the matter very fast so that I sometimes miss it.
3 hours classes are pretty long, but she burns and explodes things every hour so it helps a lot. Also her lectures are easy to understand and the practice tests are incredible useful.
Taking the 3-hour lecture once a week is long but I personally never skip class since it is only once a week. She teaches clear and precise and gives breaks every hour. Easy to follow along and her practice exams are pretty close to how she sets up the midterms. Definitely take her if you have the attention span.
She teaches like she's teaching elementary students without making you feel dumb. It is helpful and makes things more clear. She is also very understanding.
Her 6-9 pm lecture was long, but I thought this was the best lecture I have ever taken. She stayed on track and her teaching style was very useful when it came to tests. Her notes in class help a ton on tests, which are tough no matter which chemistry teacher you have. Went to her for office hours and she was incredibly helpful and supportive.
Everything Dr. Salmon says sticks in my head instantly. She is an amazing teacher and will go out of her way to help you. Her 6-9p.m. lecture is incredibly long. Her class is generally easy. I aced the first two tests, but stopped doing homework and going to class so I completely failed my third test. That being said, GO TO LECTURE AND DO HOMEWORK.
Janie is a really great professor, except I just fell behind. Taking the three hour lecture was really long and not for me. You go through the material so quickly that you'll go through two chapters in one class. Class notes are easy to comprehend. Take past exams and understand the material, and you'll do just fine.
She is a good teacher and explains things well. Very helpful in office hours.
Prof. Salmon is pretty strict with grades and the tests are not easy, but she is open to helping you with anything, whether or not it is related to chemistry. The lectures are not mandatory but they are EXTREMELY helpful, so I would recommend going to them.
I really loved her as a teacher but the lecture really is difficult. I took Chem 1 with her and I'm doing the three hour lecture again for Chem 2. It's definitely not a class you can skip or fall behind in.
If you show up to the lectures and do the online practice tests her class is a breeze.
Dr Salmon is awesome! As someone who hates chem, I actually enjoyed the class. She's fun and very enthusiastic about chemistry. She always has great demos and tries to explain things as clearly & simply as possible, which makes understanding the material a lot easier. I highly recommend taking any classes you can with her.
She has quite the humor. Professor Salmon is very clear and her lectures are easy to understand. She takes lots of questions during class and spends time helping people catch up or clarify. I really liked her.
She is a great professor, just not so nice when you go to her office hours.
Dr. Salmon is the best in the chemistry department. Go to office hours (I wish I did) and you'll probably grasp the material much better. Lectures can be rough - often has 8 am classes - but she gives the class very helpful notes. Tests are hard no matter which prof you have though!!
Great professor. She teaches in very simple terms making everything crystal clear. You cannot do well in this class without studying. Use the supplied practice exams as your main studying material and you'll do fine.
Dr. Salmon explains everything in an extremely clear manner. She gives online homework, but it's better than online homework usually is. Her demos in class are always fun and help me make it through the 3-hour night lectures. She's very helpful and always answers student questions. Can skip class if you read, but can skip reading if you go.
She's amazing and makes the 3 hour night lecture worth it. She is extremely clear and works through problems with the class. She does fun experiments a few times to keep people interested and is really helpful. Online homework is a drag but at the end I actually know the content. Take her class.
Salmon was a good professor. Her lectures were clear and easy to follow. Tests weren't too hard either, as long as you paid attention in lecture and went over notes
Salmon's lectures are amazing. She explain everything so well, although the notes are hard to follow in the first few lectures cuz she writes everywhere. Tests are tough and you really need to study for it. Her office hours are easy and nice.
Good professor, pretty clear in explanations. Tests are pretty straightforward. Experiments in class keep it interesting.
Great professor. Made me love Chem 2!
She is a super nice professor, who always come with exceptional explanation for every class materials
GO TO LECTURE! She is very clear for the most part. She explains everything well, however, remember to study the stuff and do the recommended problems to do well on tests. Don't really recommend her night 6-9 lectures because they are hard to follow. If you have questions ask, she is really nice wish I did that when the semester started.
Great professor who is very clear and likable. Tests can be hard, but are very similar to practice exams she provides. She is very fair.
She's always willing to help. When I would go to office hours she explained problems in a way that they made sense but I never left the office feeling like I could apply anything she helped with to other problems. She is super nice though.
Salmon was amazing!!! I had her night class once a week, but she kept her class engaged by doing experiments to keep you awake. I did all of the assigned book problems and her practice tests were very similar to her exams. She also was very helpful during office hours when I was stuck on a book problems, Read before going to lecture!! It helps
She's probably the best chem prof you can get at UMN. She's not boring, she makes lectures fun, and she describes everything really well. I don't dread her lectures!
Dr. Salmon is the best chemistry teacher I have had. Her lectures are so good and if you pay attention and do the homework, you should do well. Her tests can be kinda tough but that's what you should expect from every chemistry class.
Dr. Salmon does an outstanding job conveying the material necessary to do well in chemistry 1061. If something is unclear in lecture, which it rarely is, she can explain it in office hours. Highly recommend if you are taking general chemistry.
Dr. Salmon is the sweetest professor you'll ever have. She is always glad to answer questions and makes you feel welcome. You'll never feel like an idiot when asking for help, and she thoroughly explains processes and definitions. I'm very disappointed that I won't be able to take from her next semester.
She was so helpful in class and she took the time to make sure everyone understood what was going on in the class. The tests are difficult but almost exactly like the practice tests that she gives you, so if you put in any effort at all you'll be fine. Also, she was so on top of grades that the test and final grades were entered by the next day.
She's one of the best teachers I've had all year long. The online HW is very time consuming and her tests go me. If you study well, you'll do well. Take her if you can, just don't slack off!
She is the best prof I ever had. Take her if you can. She is amazing!!!
Dr. Salmon is an amazing professor! Take chemistry from her if possible! There are so many horror stories about chemistry, but she presents the material so clearly and is always available for help if you don't understand. Lab is a bit tougher, but overall, lots of materials are provided to study and the class is not too challenging.
She is the best professor I have ever had. Take her if you can and you will never regret it.
Took her summer chemistry class. I enjoyed that the homework and in class clicker questions went into the grade book. This helped my grade immensely. Tests are difficult. Be prepared to a lot of studying and homework. Her lectures are clear and helpful, but to be able to do well on the tests you have to work on practice problems.
Very good lecturer! I had her for the 3 hour evening lecture and I still thought very highly of her. Thoroughly covered exam material and example test questions. Answers student's questions in lecture well. Old practice exams available on moodle and are about the same difficulty as the actual exam. Accommodating for students with disabilities.
One of the most clear, methodical, and direct lecturers I've ever had. It's hard to get lost if you make a minimal effort to pay attention. Try not to miss lectures because there are usually a few graded clicker questions. You can get by without the textbook, I barely opened it. Homework isn't too bad, and previous tests are a great way to study.
Pretty tough material but SUCH an incredible professor, she made my three hour lecture seem like just one hour
Debra Janie Salmon is pretty much the greatest person that ever lived. Her lectures are super clear, she makes little jokes every once in a while, she does crazy experiments in class, and she'll answer even the dumbest, most repetitive questions. You do have to show up to get points for clicker questions.
Dr. Salmon is a quality professor in that she knows the course material very well. She does a very good job at explaining lecture material. Her one flaw is she often does not answer questions fully. Otherwise, a very good professor.
Salmon is a great prof, but can be a harsh grader to the point of being unfair at times. Make sure understand/do ALL the recommended book problems. I recommend reading the topics before going to class so you know whats going on. Her tests are fair, just study a bit everyday.
This was her first year teaching OChem and she teaches similarly to gen chem which is wayyyyy too fast to actually understand. The tests weren't like the practice exams because she didn't have anything to go off of - maybe she'll improve since she's taught it now, but would not recommend.
Test questions are reasonable. If you do the homework, all of the practice problems, and practice exam, you'll surely get above the average. Reading the book is really helpful as well. Webassign homework problems are right out of the book. The test questions are not out of this world, so the more you practice the better you'll do on the test.
To my knowledge, this was Salmon's first time teaching organic chemistry, and it definitely showed. I've heard she was a great gen chem professor, but it seems like she didn't adapt her teaching style at all for this class. Moved through the material ridiculously fast, did a poor job answering questions, and was extremely unhelpful in office hours.
Salmon is a great professor, but her exams are difficult. Most of your grade comes from the exams so use the practice exams she has available on moodle. Her exams are more conceptual focused than mathematical.
Janie is a delight! She speaks in a very engaging manner and her freshness is appreciated. She helps make dry material engaging. She doesn't get a five because she does go very fast sometimes, but she's very good.
iClicker questions every day, so beware. But overall she brought a lot of energy to the subject and a suitable amount of explosions. She's very helpful if you ask questions (in or out of class), and though its a tough subject she doesn't live to see her students fail.
Dr. Salmon was a great ochem professor for it only being her first semester teaching it. I'm sure she'll only continue to get better as time goes on. She presents everything you need to know for every test. Do the practice problems in the book, look at the material she post online, and do the practice test and you'll do well.
Dr. Salmon does a superb job explaining material and concepts in her lectures. You can tell that she is really enthusiastic about her teaching. Her tests can be challenging, and the TA's who grade the tests can be pretty picky. With that said, class attendance and studying are musts if you want to do well in her class.
Janie Salmon is a great prof for OChem1 she knows what she is doing and she is easy to access outside of class. If you skip her lectures you will probably fail, plus there is clicker questions. There is about 10 problems of homework (EASY) due a week, plus suggested problems to do. If you do that you will do just fine in her class.
Dr Salmon is a fantastic professor, clearly relaying a strong enthusiasm for the material. Her exams are very conceptual, doing the practice exams is a must. Lectures are very fast-paced, but if you know how to take notes concisely it's not a problem. She's very personable and generally seems happy to help, and cracks the occasional joke in class.
Wonderful lecturer that makes chemistry so much more interesting to learn about. Vibrant lectures with plenty of time for in class questions. Lecture slides aren't posted anywhere so class attendance is a must.
Great professor, explains things well, test are difficult but if you study you will do just fine.
Salmon is a great professor. The class requires A LOT of work, but that is the case no matter who the professor. Clicker points and homework count for a total of 14% of your grade, and these are easy points as long as you go to class and do the homework. Her exams are difficult but she provides practice exams that are somewhat similar to real exams
Dr. Salmon does a great job presenting the material, but the class is very difficult! There are clicker questions and weekly homework that can improve your grade. Do the practice tests and book problems to help prepare you for the exams.
Dr. Salmon knows the material well, which makes lectures easy to follow for the most part. At time she moves through topics quickly in which you'll need to go back and re learn yourself. Tests are manageable considering you study and study well. Overall a good instructor for a notoriously tough class.
Professor Salmon is by far the best Chemistry professor I have ever had. She makes a strong effort to make sure that everyone completely understands the topics and does plenty of examples in class. Going to class is vital, as the clicker questions sometimes pop up on the test, and she explains difficult concepts in the book. 10/10 would recommend!
I took 1062 as an 8 week summer class, so Dr. Salmon's lectures did move very quickly. Despite this, she stopped after every topic or example problem to ask for questions, and it is obvious she cares about her students understanding the material. Use all the practice teststhis was the best way to study for exams. Daily clicker questions, and ALEKS
She is very accessible outside of class and very quick to put test scores in. Always accepts questions and is willing to clear things up in class. Uses plenty of examples and gives specific homework problems that are often mirrors of the tests.
Really great professor. There are no surprises, the whole class is very straightforward. She's very clear in lectures and answers questions thoroughly. Tests are difficult, but she provides practice tests that help a lot. Pretty easy to do well on the exams if you take the practice tests and do practice problems from the book.
One of the better Chemistry professors at the U for sure. I'm taking Ochem with her next semester because she presents material very clearly. Overall a good teacher, the course however is extremely difficult. Study hard and start studying early. If you just memorize things rather than actually learning them you won't do well.
She's the best chem professor I've had, that being said chemistry is a hard subject so the tests are still very difficult. However, this is the best I've done in a chem class and it's because of her. Make sure you go to lecture to get those clicker points!
I took her class in spring semester. She's has a great lecture class. She has an extremely deep understanding of chemistry. You will learn a lot in lecture and she conducts some really cool chemistry experiment during her lecture sessions. Don't miss the lectures. She also has a cute smile.
Actual Exams dont match the practice exams. Plenty of trick questions on exams. Class average was a 64 so that should tell you enough.
Dr. Salmon was my favorite chemistry professor. She gives very clear and thorough lectures. Tests were very reasonable as well. Regardless, read the book and do a ton of practice problems, because that is the only way to excel in organic chemistry.
DJ Salmon is my favorite professor Ive ever had at the U! Had her for both 1062 (gen chem 2) and 2301 (ochem 1). Great lecturer, teaches everything you need to know for exams in class. Also provides great resources like practice exams, extra practice problems, and review sessions before exams! Makes difficult material clear & accessible. Super cute
She was organized and her exams are similar to practice exams. I like to rewrite her notes, it helps me retain the information. I used the calendar on the syllabus a lot to stay on top of class materials. We also had clicker questions and aleks.
Great professor! Very commited to teaching and making sure you do well.
Awesome professor. Knows what she is talking about and gives great examples. Overall really good lecturer and exams are fair if you do the work and come to class prepared to learn.
Janie is my girl! Every semester I look at when she's teaching and I design literally every aspect of my life (other classes, work) around her schedule. Clicker questions every lecture, but they are easy. Quick to email back on questions, very willing to make appts outside office hours. Patient and loves her students. Highly recommend!!!
Best professor Ive ever had. She is super thorough and makes sure to answer your questions and makes lots of time outside of class for office hours. Study and pay attention and youll for sure get an A!
I will only EVER take chemistry classes with Dr. Salmon... she is one of the best professors in the entire department.
Janie is awesome! One of the best professors at the U for sure. Her lectures are very organized, its easy to take notes, homework and exams reflect the lectures. She is super helpful, very knowledgeable, and actually cares about chemistry. Fun experiments in class. Definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Life would be a lot better if every professor was as organized and thorough as Dr Salmon. Usually, I don't like to take notes but the way Dr. Salmon conducts her lectures makes it super easy to have good & organized notes. She also provides links, sources, & a list of particular topics & concepts as a study guide to review for midterm- best prof!!
She's a great general chem professor, but her organic chemistry class is much more difficult. She is obviously a very intelligent woman, but it makes her lectures a little harder to understand. She is organized and good at getting grades in. Would recommend, but only if you're willing to put in the extra work- but this goes for all ochem classes.
I would not recommend her for Organic Chemistry. She goes very fast in lectures and will skip entire sections that she expects you to teach to yourself. She cannot answer questions because she can't explain anything in simpler terms. ALL of the exams will have questions that you have never seen anything like it before, it was very frustrating.
This is the 2nd class I've had with Salmon and I wish she taught ochem 2. She's organized, accessible, and personable. Ochem is very hard and moves quickly, but Salmon does a good job of explaining as clearly as possible and is willing to meet outside class. Her jokes are corny and she knows it, but I appreciated the lighthearted humor at 9am
Just take the time out of class do example problems and go over the practice quizzes and this class won't be any trouble. Prof. Salmon does a really good job at explaining the material and she uses relevant demonstrations to keep the lectures interesting. If your science-minded, this class is not bad at all.
I took Gen Chem 2 with Salmon, and she's a better prof for that class in my opinion, but she's definitely not a bad prof for Orgo 1. She moves quickly so caffeinate before class. I advise doing all the optional book probs, and practice exams, focus on tricky concepts and questions. Beware her actual exams are harder than the practice.
pay attention in lecture and take notes, do that and reading the book is unnecessary.
Salmon is an amazing chemistry professor. Her lectures are usually clear and she is always open to questions and repeating something. If you do the book problems and get outside help, it is not impossible to receive an A. My only critique would be she lectures very fast and puts a lot of the material online, be sure to check moodle before exams.
Professor Salmon was great for CHEM 1062. She respects every students and she is very approachable. I worked more than 8 hours a week and solve the problems from the textbook. <- You need to do this in order to get an A.
she is the best gen chem and ochem professor you can take at the U. specially gen chem. she is really good but don't expect her to teach you everything. she is really big on homework and give ton of book problem. sometimes to F with students she will get a direct question from the book in the exam. You can nvr win against her in an argument.
Well, to be honest, I love her class structure. Allows you to be indecent on your studying and not too much materials thrown at you. Organized notes, clear expectation, clear class outline. Definitely recommended if you like a helpful professor that doesnt assign too much homework and expect you to do a lot of stuff
Dr. Salmon was a fantastic gen chem 2 prof. She was clear, concise, and stopped to make sure everyone understood frequently and consistently. She sprinkles humor into her lectures intermittently to make learning more fun. Chem 2 was graded on a curve so it made predicting one's grade difficult. There is graded online homework--do it before Sunday!
All the reviews about Dr. Salmon are correct - she's great. Always prepared, organized, and clear about what will be covered on tests. That being said, organic chem isn't easy so be willing to work. Also, be sure to take good notes because there is usually one free response question on each test that is shockingly similar to an example from lecture
Janie is super kind and incredibly smart. She writes on the board for lectures, so attendance is pretty necessary, but this way, she doesn't just read off slides; she actually teaches. Her practice tests are similar to the exams given in class, which is super helpful. Very tough class, but I think Dr. Salmon helps a lot.
Professor Salmon is, in a word: forthright. I think this is a good quality in a professor, particularly one who is tasked with teaching undergraduate chemistry. She was sometimes a bit robotic, each lecture she gave the same speech about the online homework and registering your clicker to get points. She is patient when you ask questions.
I thought that Dr. Salmon was a wonderful professor. Personally, it was better for me to talk to her one-on-one during office hours than in lectures, because it did seem as if she was just on autopilot during class. However, organic chemistry is hard; do the readings and practice problems (you NEED the textbook) and go to every lecture.
She is an amazing teacher. Going to her lectures is a big part of what you need to do to get a good grade. My best advice is to read ahead; read the textbook sections she has assigned to you before every lecture so you know what you are at least doing. Definitely get your homework all caught up every chapter; you don't want to lag behind.
Although, she's a fine professor, her lectures ARE SO DIFFERENT than her exams. She draws her lecture on the board, and no ppt is posted online, so show up to class. Also, there are clicker questions for points during class, so skipping is a no-go here.
Her teaching style was very rushed, and she does not relay complex information well. Her condescending/irritated tone was not conducive to my learning and she is very impersonal when approached with even the most simple of questions. Only take if you are already highly self sufficient in chem
Just goes too fast. She did a 20 section chapter in 3-50 minute class periods. How does one even learn that way?
She goes through the material way too fast. Lecture should be used to help students understand the material, not attempting to relay the info as fast as possible. Makes it impossible to learn the material properly.
Organic chemistry is a hard class, but Salmon will give you the materials you need to be successful in the course. Go to lecture, read the textbook before class, do the homework, and assigned book problems and you will do fine in the course. She has lots of availability for office hours and many ways to get help you just have to put in the time.
She talks a lot, but nothing really important, educational, or useful ever comes out of her mouth. Also, she enjoys talking down to you whenever you ask her a simple question. Not very helpful. You get the idea that she's really smart, but she definitely does not know how to teach. Take class with Pelton or someone else.
Janie cares about her students and it's clear she cares about the topic. Very easy class, you literally just have to show up. One big plus is that you will receive food during the semester.
In O chem, Dr. Salmon goes very quickly through lectures, but explains concepts well and is very straightforward in answering questions.. The majority of the grade is the 3 exams and the final, which are difficult, but there is a big curve. She posts a lot of practice problems and other helpful information for each test. Read the book before class.
Honestly, she is kinda mean and very intimidating but overall a decent professor even on such a hard subject that is O-chem. I would say you have to go to lectures because I missed some and I still kick myself for sleeping through them, and they are over the whiteboard so she can't post them for view after class.
She does a bell curve grading system. Class avg is curved to a C+, so that means that half the class gets As and Bs and half the class gets Cs or lower. The bell curve is a horrible grading system and doesn't benefit many students. If you are below the class average you get a C no matter what. Would recommend a different prof that grades better
Very strong lecturer, heavy on information. Really knows what she is talking about. Tests are rather difficult if you dont prepare for them. Lots of outside work is required to do well. Slightly intimidating to approach at first.
She doesn't have lecture slides so you have to go to class to get the notes, plus there are clicker questions. Her lectures are super clear and make you feel like you understand the material. Make sure you read the textbook (for true and false questions on the test) and do practice problems in the book for the tests.
Dr. Salmon makes organic chemistry more interesting to learn by showing us experiments once in a while. Her lectures are organized and if you don't understand sth in class, don't be afraid to go to her (she will listen to your questions and explain where you can get the info from). Her tests are not too difficult/easy, some questions are tricky.
She is literally the best professor who taught me until now. Her quizzes aren't easy and not impossible. Her lectures are amazing and not boring. If she read this, i want to tell her thank you.
This class is not meant to be an easy one. Fortunately, Dr. Salmon was an extremely talented and knowledgable lecturer. She even was kind of funny sometimes! I utilized the ChemFoundations much more than her office hours due to my schedule not lining up right with hers. If you have to take Ochem, I would highly recommend taking with Salmon.
Dr. Salmon made lectures pretty interesting. However, this class is extremely tough. You absolutely need to read, do Aleks, go to the Chem tutor room in Smith. The content is just rough. I skipped class a lot, which you should NOT do as attendance through Clicker points is important. If I went to class and put in more effort I might have swung a B.
Dr. Salmon is definitely qualified to teach OChem but she goes really fast and that's essentially why the class is so hard. I had to watch many khan academy videos after her lectures to understand it but the tests became much easier (still pretty tough) after doing that. She's a good prof but it still won't be easy.
This class was my favorite classes of all this year. Yes her tests were hard and it require a lot of details to memorize but once you solve and understand the old tests, you could get solid B+. She tried her best to make each lecture not-boring. I recommend her class if you are require to take O-Chem!
Dr. Salmon is a great professor. I will say that this class is hard, but her exams are standard, meaning that it tests very similar material from past exams. The problem I had with the exams was always the time. You don't really have time to think or relook your answers, so it really requires you to know the material beforehand.
No lecture notes provided, so attendance is somewhat mandatory; however, the lectures seem to strictly follow her lecture notes. Uses iclicker for in-class quiz. Time ticking and challenging exams are her style for all her courses, yet curved eventually. So hard work pays off, but it can be stressful. Exam Histogram would be a good future addition.
This is a hard class, lot's of information, but Salmon makes it clear. Gives good office hour feedback. Do the practice tests, her tests are exactly the same. She makes the info clear and easy to follow. Fast paced class, but going to class is essential to pass. Salmon makes OChem manageable.
Dr. Salmon is amazing! I have not heard much about the other professors but I know that she is really specific on what she wants and what we need to know and provides a lot of resources to support her students. OChem is a difficult class in general so its not like she makes it easy but she makes it easier to study for.
No one laughs at her jokes but I swear they're actually funny! This class is by far one of the hardest things I've ever done but Prof Salmon will do everything she possibly can to get you to pass and get you ready for Ochem 2 and Biochem. I would strongly strongly recommend
Disappointed in her transition to remote after COVID-19 struck. Instead of using Proctorio, could have adjusted content/curve/tests to suit her students who are *already* having a tough time, let alone trying to learn OChem during a pandemic. Show up to lectures, do the practice tests, book problems, tutoring, etc. and you still will still struggle
If you want to fail, take her class. If you have no other choice, get ready to work your tail off. If I were to redo this class, I would go to the lecture and then supplement the lecture with 1-2 hours of Khan Academy and "The Organic Chemistry Tutor". Do every book problem and practice exam. "O Chem Connections" are better teachers than her.
Prof Salmon was extremely fast at responding to all my emails. Most of her class involves self-studying so I can see why some others wouldn't like her if they can't learn that way. Her notes and practice exams were extremely helpful though. I recommend finding as many exams written by her on coursehero as possible. It's the only way to get an A.
Ochem is tough no matter who teaches it, but I think Salmon does a great job. Her lectures are clear and to the point, you won't run out of material to study, and she wants you to learn it well! Do practice problems religiously and power through it!
OChem is going to be a hard class regardless. However, Salmon taught it really well. I would recommend reading the textbook material before going to lectures because you'll be able to take a lot more in. Most of the time, her exams were pretty similar to her practice exams.
Dr. Salmon does her best to make the material learnable. She provides practice exams which are helpful for exam prep. She offered Zoom office hours 6x/week when classes were online where she was very approachable. This class requires effort, but reading before class, doing practice problems, and attending office hours make the class manageable.
FYI: my semester got switched online halfway through b/c COVID19. Absolutely the hardest thing Ive ever done in my life. This is the final boss of weed out classes. But, I was 1.9% short of passing the class, and I sent her an email begging to pass, and to my astonishing surprise she passed me. My pre-vet track is forever indebted to her.
You have to be a strong independent learner in order to do well in her classes as she breezes through material (only covering the basics) and doesn't go over many practice problems. I learned more from Ochem Connections tutors, Khan Academy, and Leah4Sci. Exams are similar to practice exams, but definitely expect some surprises.
Difficult, but Salmon is a great lecturer. There are no breaks in lecture; everything she says is important to remember (except her reiterations of building models). Show up, take notes, read before lecture, do practice problems, & use office hours/OCHEM connections. Exams are harder than the other professors, but she prepares you better for OCHEM2
Fast lecturer and the practice problems she does in class are very basic. Provides resources for students to access, but those did little to supplement learning. Response to the online shift was incredibly disappointing and very unaccommodating. Rarely curves anything. Teaches full time, but is part-time quality. Khan Academy was my savior.
Salmon was great at teaching the material & always provided plenty of examples to help students understand the material. However, the examples given in class were always MUCH easier than the material found on tests, so doing extra practice problems on your own is EXTREMELY important. DO NOT SKIP CLASS if you want to succeed, she uses clicker points
Lots of respect for Dr. Salmon. She is thorough and knows her stuff well. Highly encourage office hours (of course).
She is the least sympathetic person ever. I took this class fully online because of COVID. Her prerecorded videos are trash. My Proctorio wasnt working so I emailed her to let her know what was happening. She pretty much said sucks for you. She scrambles to find cheaters and falsely accuses. HORRIBLE
She gives crazy amount of homework, and I can hardly see her lecture videos. She recorded her lectures for summer term and now she will use them forever. I can legit not understand what she is writing and is crazily looking for cheaters on proctorio and chegg. She has got a lot of free time so making lives hard for students. Do not recommend her.
Not a great professor. Only touches on basic level information in lectures and then tests (worksheets) with extremely complex information. Biweekly exams are fair however she is rude during office hours and is not a great teacher
Prof. Salmon has been a challenging professor. Oftentimes have to supplement class materials with YouTube videos because the online lecture quality is impossible to read. Exams every other week; very test heavy grading and a very harsh grader. Not easy to communicate with as a professor.
Tests are way harder than the material presented in lectures. Biweekly practice problem sets are harsly graded. You have to read the textbook and do the practice problems in the textbook to do well. I was enjoying chemistry until I took this class. I dreaded every lecture and exam.
Salmon is a great professor and she teaches the course content well. OChem will always be a tough course though, no matter who teaches it. In my opinion, she has been pretty accomodating with online classes, giving us unlimited time (up to 24 hours) to complete exams. If you read the textbook and put in the work, an A is very doable.
Taking Salmon's course online was brutal and her videos dont teach the material. If you want to be successful in the class, don't even watch them. Just read the textbook. Also, the TA's grade incredibly unfairly and you could turn in the same worksheet as someone else and have your scores differ greatly. Shes also very condescending in office hours
Look, organic chemistry is no walk in the park. Most of the people here want someone to blame other than themselves for their poor grade. Salmon probably did the best job being online compared to my other professors. She really does care about the students. Read the textbook, watch the lectures, do the practice problems. DO NOT REPLY ON LECTURE
Idk where to start. This semester was already really hard with every class being online but she had us do Bi-weekly worksheets which are graded so harshly, Bi-weekly exams and her recorded lectures are trash don't even waste your time watching them. Plus connect and learnsmart Hw that ranged between 50-80 questions which was crazy.
Salmon's emails make it seem like she is caring and so helpful, but she has this condescending attitude. The biweekly worksheets are graded so harshly, the homework is very long and time consuming, and the the precorded lectures were TRASH. Learned nothing from the professor and relied on youtube and the textbook.
Condescending during office hours. Reminded us how many resources like homework, practice probs, etc. were available even though we repeatedly told her they were not helpful in preparing for exams. Inconsistent grading for biweekly worksheets. Unwillingness to be accommodating to student's circumstances. She didn't care about student feedback.
I thought Dr. Salmon was a phenomenal teacher! Ochem is a very hard class, no doubt about it, but if you read the book and watch the pre-recorded lectures (in that order), do the practice problems, attend Ochem connections if you need help, and work to understand (not memorize) the content, you will succeed in this class.
Professor Salmons lecture videos weren't much of a help. The textbook is necessary to do well. Reading and doing the practice problems. The homework is really long and half of it is not necessary since it's just reading comp. The connect homework is pretty important. She's very nice and accessible out of class but also condescending.
Basically, she'll show how accommodating and nice she is but deep inside is a big evil. Her videos are in such a bad shape, even after complaining to the DUGS she did not do anything, and chem dept just said this feedback will help students next semester. She is the worst professor and will give you a hard time. Don't take it with her!
She was pretty accommodating for online compared to the other professors I had for other classes (group worksheets, more midterms). This gave students more chances to improve their grade, which was nice if you studied.
She is a nice professors and does teach the materials well, yet I strongly recommend watching extra videos on YouTube. Sometimes the Connect homeworks and suggested problems (optional) from the book are ridiculously hard, but you will pass the class if you study according to the study guide and make an enough effort for it.
Her pre-recorded lectures contained the bare minimum information and often didn't include complex enough examples to even help with the homework. I relied almost exclusively on online videos and a study group.
Salmon gives her lectures as online pre-recorded notes videos, so class time is optional and is a problem-solving session. McGraw Hill Connect is used for the homework and doesn't give enough questions; there are book problems, but you have to buy the solutions manuals. Good professor, but could sometimes gloss over important topics in the notes.
Her lectures were clear and explained difficult concepts with ease. Lectures were the key to doing well on exams, textbook served more as an additional supplement (although she recommended reading then watching lectures). She replies to emails and any concerns quickly, and definitely wants her students to do well. Definitely recommend her to all!
I absolutely loved Professor Salmon! This year was hard enough with online school, but she took time to meet with me and help me plan my semester. She also was very understanding, and would extend time on assignments or quizzes if you really needed it. Her lectures were clear, and the quizzes are based mostly on these.
Prof. Salmon provided great lectures overall except she explained a few topics such as hybridization and the intro ochem chapter very confusing, so just watch a few outside videos and you'll do fine. She provides problem solving sessions and practice tests for each unit that are very useful for tests. The tests are hard, but they are doable.
She is a very nice professor and her voice is easy to listen to, but her lectures did not prepare you for the exams at all. If you don't do well on the normal exams, the final will crush you as it is not similar to them. She is very accessible, but I would suggest watching other videos if you're confused because the McGH homework is busy work.
Fun experiments but shes very mean
Organic chemistry is a hard class no matter what, but Dr. Salmon makes it bearable. She wants her students to succeed and offers lots of advice and resources. She has always been helpful and friendly when I have reached out. The tests are difficult, & homework is busy work, but if you do the textbook problems and put in effort you'll be fine
She used pre-recorded lectures from Fall 2020, which were obviously hastily put together due to the pandemic. They definitely should have been re-recorded as the quality definitely isn't there and it has been over a year. The "class time" was spent doing problems which honestly did nothing to prepare for the exams. Felt blind going into every exam.
Chem 2301 had extremely hard material that was thought through poor quality online videos with a problem session twice a week that does nothing but waist an hour of your time (my grade improve after I started skipping them). This professor refuses to curve the class or release class averages. I am disappointed in the U for the quality of this class
I loved Dr. Salmon - she was clear in her lectures and used class time for practice problems which were relevant to the ALEKS assignments and helped for the exams. The overall class was curved which was also nice. The exams are fair if you take the effort to do the practice problems beforehand. I would definitely recommend her for gen chem 2!
Professor Salmon had a flipped class, watching lectures online and doing 1-3 practice problems during lecture time. Honestly, if you understand the lectures and do the Aleks you could skip the problem-solving sessions without any issues. Her lecture videos explain everything really clearly and the tests are exactly like the in class problems.
Dr. Salmon was very accommodating and treated her students with respect. She explained things very clearly in lectures and it was easy for me to follow her way of teaching. I picked an ochem class taught by her next semester since I enjoy her teaching style.
All of her lectures were online. I think that her lectures were very detailed and were always very helpful. I did not go to the practice problem sections (in person) and I think those could have been very helpful. She has recommended examples from the book posted on canvas and those were super helpful practice. Tough class but it is not impossible.
The texts for this class are nothing like the class recording, lecture videos, or the textbook. The content seems easy and doable but the exams are nothing like the material covered.
really bad. nothing in the lecture relates to the exam. no point in even attending class unless you have worked the material out on your own ahead of time. class is filled with examples of equations but nothing actually prepares you for the exams. make sure to watch lectures online, she won't tell you about them and will just assume you know.
She explains tough concepts in easy to understand ways. She doesn't curve/drop exams which sucks because other ochem profs do. Super easy to reach outside of class. If you let her know you're struggling, she is flexible with that. If you are struggling and you don't make an effort, she lets you know about resources to use. This class takes work.
I ended up withdrawing after switching out of CBS. Chemistry is really tough for me so this class was hell. Six "midterms" (one a week) and the final made up about 75% of final grade so if you aren't a good test taker this class will suck. She was funny and you ca tell she likes what she teaches, which seems rare in that department.
Debra Salmon is a great lecturer with clear grading criteria. The class has a generous curve and she is incredibly knowledgable. I find her very inspirational as someone who has a passion for chemistry themselves. She has a good sense of humor and the in-class experiments are entertaining and engaging.
Debra had amazing lectures that allowed me to learn. The demonstrations she had in class were amazing. I attended multiple Zoom meetings to get the help that was needed and she always explained everything well.
Dr. Salmon is a very kind and thoughtful professor. I loved this class and I really liked her style of teaching with the recorded lecture videos. I learned best by rewatching parts that I didn't understand so I found those to be valuable in securing an A. Overall loved her humor and the experiments were a fun surprise in class. 10/10.
I loved Dr. Salmons class. She's really funny with a sort of dry humor and super kind to her students.
I've taken Dr. Salmon for both CHEM 1062 and 2301 and I can say that she has been a great professor for both. I really enjoyed her lecture videos that were uploaded online which I found easy to pause and take notes on which is important in this class because there is a lot of information to consume. Overall made other interesting and enjoyable!
I was afraid of taking her class after seeing her rating on RMP but she actually is a wonderful wonderful lecturer. Everything is easy to understand but the exams are brutal
Best chem prof I've ever had (maybe even just straight up the best prof I've ever had). I actually felt that I was learning the material given the comprehensibility of her lectures. She made O-chem a highly tolerable class, which is very different from how most people describe their O-chem experiences, which says a lot about Dr. Salmon.
If I put effort into this class, I would have gotten an A likely. Kind teacher, teaches the content in an accessible way. Hard class, but probably because the content itself is just hard to learn. She's very engaging. Hardest part were exams. Occasional curveball questions.
Salmon's class is really hard, but she makes her lectures engaging and helpful. She is very inclusive towards all groups which makes her more respectable. She tells you how you need to succeed in her class and offers a multitude of support.
The class is so difficult, and the lectures are not even explained that well. Other videos I have watched outside of the lectures make way more sense. The exams are hard and if you get one thing wrong, points are taken off. I heard there may not be a curve and that just sounds impossible. I don't know why she would be so strict on that.
Great lectures, but her exams are crazy difficult and THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CURVE! The median for the first 2 exams for fall 2022 is 72% and 62%, and we need to be at 74% for a B.
-seems like genuinely kind person -organization, communication, and knowledge on the subject -limited accessibility but tries to accomodate -hard to differentiate details between similar topics (maybe just how ochem is) -use book summaries/tables
She gives you all the tools and material you need to succeed. The sheer amount of resources that she makes available to everyone is insane. Organic chemistry is a tough subject, but Dr. Salmon makes it kinda of fun to be honest.
Janie Salmon is an amazing professor. There are SO many resources available to succeed. Probably the most I've had in a class. She responds to emails fast and seems very caring. The class is exam based but if you put the work in it really is not as hard as people make it out to be. She has made me love the subject!
If you are not prepared to study 5 hours per day, don't take her class. Also, the recorded lectures are good, but never enough. You will need a ton of extra practice and materials outside of class
Professor Salmon class is so exam heavy and she doesn't allow any curves. She makes the lectures so boring and I actually get tired when studying for her exams. The questions on the exams have to be the way she wants it and if it isn't, good luck getting points for that question. I recommend anyone thinking about taking her course think again.
Prof. Salmon is the best chemistry professor I have ever had. Her lectures are amazing. Very organized and she explains things clearly. Tests are very long though, so make sure you can solve questions quickly to finish in time. The class is still very difficult obviously, but I recommend prof. Salmon over any other chem professor at the U.
Dr. Salmon is amazing. The class is difficult, but organic chemistry will be hard no matter who teaches it. Her lectures are great, and clear. The homework and quizzes are very doable, and the exams are hard, but also doable. She has practice exams for each exam, that are very close to the exams you take, which is extremely helpful. Great professor
Dr. Salmon shows true passion for the content and is a great resource for students. The content is hard, but that is a given for organic chemistry. Her organization of the course content is great. I did poorly on one of the first exams, and Dr. Salmon was more than willing to go over it with me and make a plan for improvement (& it worked!!).
Ochem is a tough subject but Dr. Salmon made it quite doable. Lecture videos are posted which is helpful if you need to miss or need to review. Grades are test heavy but you will be set up to succeed as long as you put in the work. Overall great class and I made sure I have Salmon for ochem 2 because of my experience.
While exams make up 600 points out of 700 total, the curve is quite good (85+ is an A). Furthermore, the other 100 points are completely free, so an A is very achievable. She lectures very well and clearly knows her stuff. The exams are not so difficult so long as you study well and the overall content isn't so bad either.
Dr. Salmon is the best chemistry professor at the U. The class itself is very difficult, but the amount of resources she provides allows for success. Her posted lectures and practice exams are a great resource. The class is graded mostly by the 4 tests and final, so a lot of studying needs to be done to succeed, but she makes it possible.
The class is very difficult but Dr. Salmon is also a very good teacher. She explains everything in a way that is easy to understand and will answer any questions. She also has video lectures for every lesson so you can stay caught up if you miss lecture.
This course is obviously very difficult but Salmon provides just about every resource possible and is a good lecturer. She very clearly is passionate about organic chemistry and teaching it as well.
This class is hard but if you do the practice problems she provides along with practice tests, it really isn't bad. She is a very straightforward professor wanting to help you succeed. I enjoyed how flexible her class was with prerecorded lectures and an asynchronous class accommodating many student's learning preferences.
She knows her content well and is accessible outside of class but came across as a bit rude. It always sounded like she just wanted you to leave her office hours the second you wanted to ask a question. Lectures are also extremely disorganized.
I personally really loved Salmon's teaching style, and I think she's one of the VERY few good chemistry professors at the U. The class is mainly based on tests, but the lectures prepare you very well for them. She sends out slides beforehand that have great info on them.
Salmon herself is amazing, but the content in generally is just really difficult. Make sure to show up to class or else keep up through her online lectures, but make sure to just keep up and not fall behind or else it becomes hard the rest of the semester. Salmon teaches in a way I really enjoyed and made it easy to understand :)
I am in CHEM 2302 with Dr. Salmon and took CHEM 2301 with her last semester. Be prepared to take lots of notes and compelte practice problems. She is very open to answering quesitons and provides lots of resources for help. The only negative thing I would say is that Homework D is god awful (29 problems) and due before the day before the first exam.
Not only is Salmon the best professor I've ever had at the U, but she's also the best teacher I've ever had in my entire life. This woman is extremely compassionate and wants to get to know every student personally. Chem is hard, but Salmon works hard to provide multiple resources, including recorded lectures and many practice problems for exams!
I wish I could have Dr. Salmon for every chem class I'll take. She is an amazing lecturer, frequently stops to allow questions, and explains all content in great detail. She provides countless resources for practice problems and support. She is super kind during office hours and genuinely wants everyone to succeed.
amazing professor for chem 2301/2302. super open for questions, and teaches in a clear approachable way. would say you don't even need textbook, everything from her lectures is sufficient to do well. practice exams are very similar to real exams. connect homework is tougher than exams, but you get unlimited attempts
Professor Salmon makes class enjoyable and teaches the content in a very clear manner.
Even though it was her first time teaching ochem 2, you wouldn't know unless she told you. Dr. Salmon is the unsung hero of the entire chemistry department, and is single-handedly carrying Smith Hall on her back. She replies to emails at 4am, answers questions with infinite amounts of patience, and is just an awesome person.
I seriously have never had a better chem professor in my entire life. Salmon is so caring, helpful, and approachable. Other than the fact that Chem is just a hard class to take, Salmon is the first prof that has helped me understand. Her lectures are so great and helpful, and if you're taking Chem this is the prof you want!!!
I had to take this course twice for mental health reasons, and she was far more precise and more accessible than other professors I have had.
Had her for both ochem 1 and 2, and she has been on of my favorite profs. Rather than tell you what to know, she teaches in a way helps you understand why. The exams are extremely reasonable and the format is practically the same as the practice exams. To do well just study a little everyday, go to OLS, and do LOTS of practice problems/worksheets.
I had Dr. Salmon for both organic chem 1 and 2, and she was amazing in both. She had clear lectures that laid out all the material, and she was always willing to help and answer questions. Organic chem 2 was definitely very challenging due to heavily detailed content, but Dr. Salmon laid it out in a fantastic way.
I had Salmon for ochem 1 and 2, she is a very thorough professor that truly wants you to succeed. The class itself is just difficult and you have to put time in to be successful but she is definitely the best professor to have for chemistry overall.
I find the way she structures her course to be very clear and fair. The exams are hard, but aren't too difficult if you do the syllabus problems and the homework. Also go to her office hours! She's very receptive to any questions.
This is not only the best chemistry professor I have had, but the best professor in general. I have never written a review before but I will make an exception for her. The material in the class was very difficult but she is amazing at taking the hard material and making it understandable. The lectures were great and she knows what she is doing.
She taught the class very well, and her lectures were clearly well planned out. The homework in the class can be frustrating at times, but overall, it's not that much of your grade so it's not a big deal. Tests were not too hard and she would go over the problems that many people got wrong afterwards which helped for reviewing.
Made passing Organic Chemistry attainable. Cares for her students and it passionate about what she does. Lectures are accessible asynchronous and synchronous. She is happy to answer any and all questions. I recommend doing what she tells she says will help you pass, it really will help.
If you need to take Organic Chemistry do it with her.
The class was very tough, but Salmon is probably the best chemistry professor there is. She explains stuff incredibly well and I enjoyed the fact that the great book is not only dependent on exam grades. Despite it being a huge lecture, she always invites questions and is very accessible by email.
Dr. Salmon has been my favorite professor so far as she is kind, on top of things, and a great lecturer, also has SO many online resources to study for exams and keep up with course content, you must attend lecture or watch the videos and complete practice problems, practice exams mirrored content closely, course isn't as bad as people make it seem
This class was really hard and I think it would be with any professor. Salmon was okay, nothing notably good or bad. Recorded lectures were nice and the homework and quizzes helps you stay on track in class. If you keep up with the content you could do well. The curve is pretty big too, an 86 ish or above was an A.
Had Dr. Salmon for 2301 and 2302 and she was fantastic in both. Her office hours were always really useful, and she has very clean, useful canvas pages with a lot of useful practice exams and other info. Her lectures are great and she gets through a lot of material in a manageable way.
The content was presented very clearly. Going to lecture would be smart for ochem 1. There are plenty of free points from the homeworks and prep quizzes which gives some wiggle room for the tests.
Dr. Salmon knows what she's doing- super clear on everything!!! Ochem is easy if you know how to study and use your resources- taking her again for ochem 2
I was not impressed with Salmon. Her lectures were generally her reading word for word from the textbook as well as copying the exact practice problems from the textbook. Additionally, often her homework assignments as well as supplemental practice problems revolved around topics like H NMR that did not show up in a lecture or test even once.
Given the rigor of OCHEM, Salmon makes it possible for students to succeed. To get an A in 2301/2301: attend lecture, do little practice everyday (OLS, in-class problems, chime-in problems), take practice exams a few days before exam and GRIND on the concepts you miss. Heavy on time-management! Getting behind in this class is a nightmare.
Ochem can be tough, but taking it with Dr. Salmon makes it manageable. Attend lectures, do practice problems daily, and utilize the online resources like unstuckstudy AI - it really helps with study prep. The class is challenging, but Salmon is a great teacher who wants you to succeed.
2301 is a hard class and I recommend watching youtube videos and studying beforehand. She was an okay teacher but I was annoyed by every friday we had to learn about some scientist rather than actually learning the important material. One of the better 2301 teachers, but the class sucks regardless because of the semi-flipped learning format.
Dr. Salmon made organic chemistry seem very easy. Her lectures are very well-structured so make sure you download the lecture slides and work along with her. Also, go to OLS and do practice problems without guidance because it will help you remember the general mechanisms.
The BEST professor I've had at the U! Her lectures are actually interesting and made me love the class. If you're worried about understanding O Chem TAKE HER CLASS!! I'm so sad she won't be teaching OChem II next semester :(
Salmon is as cool as they get. She's mad smart and a fantastic professor.
Janie/Debra is such a great lecturer. She does a really great job reminding you throughout lectures of little details you probably learned a while ago and forgot about. She moves fast but she is very committed to helping students outside of lecture. Don't think I would have done as well in the class with another professor!
Salmon is an amazing chemistry professor. I had her for both chem 2 and Ochem. I valued her lectures so much!! Her lectures are extremely helpful, including the videos she provides on the canvas page from Covid-era. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. This is a difficult class and is very test heavy, but she makes it awesome.
Professor Salmon is an amazing chemistry professor who has insightful and helpful lectures. She lays out her grading criteria as well as any other info needed for the course. She offers many extra resources to help with this difficult class. She was very kind and always did extra to help support her students, even though there was 200+ in the class
Dr. Salmon was a good lecturer, and she set-up the class well. Grading is very fair, so you can get a good grade despite the difficulty of the class. She has all the resources you need to succeed such as old practice exams and study guides. I would recommend taking this class with her!
dr. salmon is amazing; she's super knowledgeable, caring, and her lectures are very clear. she explains concepts in a way that makes ochem feel less like memorizing, and more like drawing connections. this class is tough, but very doable. i actually kind of enjoyed ochem, and i think a lot of that can be attributed to having salmon as my professor.
Great prof
Dr. Salmon is a fantastic lecturer. I had her for both chem1061 and chem2302 and both times her lectures were incredibly clear and easy to follow. Well organized, including the canvas page. The course is extremely difficult in a horribly run chemistry department, but that isn't her fault. I would take another course with her!
Solid professor
Great lecturer and a very supportive professor, just an unfortunately difficult class in an unfortunately difficult chemistry program. The class sucks but that has nothing to do with Salmon herself
we love dr salmon!! shes an amazing professor and teaches concepts very clearly and easy to understand. she provides a ton of resources like prerecorded lectures and lecture notes. tests were very fair and very similar practice exams. ochem is just a lot of work but its definitely doable with salmon 10/10
Dr. Salmon is the best professor I have ever had. I took this class last year and I think about her teaching style often. She makes the class material extremely accessible (zoom, in person, recordings, slides). Office hours are very helpful. But know, this is a hard class. She just wants her students to learn. A value that not many professors have.
I had Dr. Salmon for 2301 and 2302, and she was AMAZING for both. Her lectures were super clear and she genuinely cares about her students. This class is quite a lot of work, which is the nature of chemistry classes, but if you put in the effort you'll do well!
Dr. Salmon was amazing! She has so many resources on her canvas page to help you do well and had really clear lectures. She clearly cares a lot about her students and wants us all to do well. She gave us multiple dropped assignments and a dropped midterm exam. This class is a lot of work, but if you're consistent and put in effort, you can do well.
The class is really hard but Dr. Salmon is a good lecturer and professor. She is very easy to talk and ask questions to. She actually wants to help students and listens to them as she shortened our homeworks when students said it was too much. Definitely take her class if you have to take orgo!
Debbie is a good professor but the way the class works is that its very test heavy, and I htink this is more based on the university than it is her.
Cares about her students. Her lectures are really great and she wants you to learn things. Orgo is not something you can memorize, be prepared to do her recommended problems and seek help with her but she will work until you get it. Her tests are horrendous though.
Salmon goes through material really fast, but there is a lot to learn in orgo- it's not an easy class. If you put the time in and practice (practice exams, ALEKS, OLS sessions), it's possible to do well. Lots of building concepts, but mechanism & synthesis are the hardest to grasp (in my opinion), so use the resources they offer as much as possible
Dr. Salmon is kind and funny, but like most teachers here, you still need to do the learning on your own. She has long lectures she gets the single most important thing wrong a detailed and helpful class, but has office hours, TA hours, a lot of support papers (not that useful though) on Canvas and more. Bottom line she's fine but you can find more
Orgo isn't just memorization, it's all about concepts and patterns. Dr. Salmon teaches it so well and gives great tips. Took her summer class (2 months) and even after missing a midterm, I still got an A. Her grading is fair, Canvas lectures are clutch, and as always practice is key to doing well. You do need to study a lot yourself.
Organic Chemistry is a tough course, but Professor Salmon does an excellent job at making the course more digestible. She does a wonderful job in lecture. One thing that I really appreciated that she did was giving us tons of practice problems in class, letting us work through them, and then going through them. I would completely recommend her!
You may have heard that Orgo is a weed out course however this Orgo course was my easiest course this semester. You can earn an A from just the homework and 4 midterms. However, Dr. Salmon was (and still is) the best professor I have ever had. Her philosophy of never memorizing anything, and doing practice problems helped me become a better person.
Lectures weren't mandatory, but she was great at explaining. She was a great teacher, just a very tough class. Sometimes quizzes felt like they were trying to trick you, and be overly complicated. Taught myself outside of lecture, and by the end was able to excel in the class.
Genuinely such an angel and a much better prof than the other 2301 professors; take her if you can! She talks very quickly, but has to, as there's a lot of content to cover. With mechanisms, definitely make sure to look at other resources + practice to get them down, lecture will not suffice. Generous grade boundaries and calculations are applied.
Ochem 2 mechanisms are easily 3x the size of what you learn in Ochem 1, but Dr. Salmon makes everything much easier to understand. She explains reactions and patterns very clearly and builds strong intuition. You do need to self-study, but her Canvas videos and explanations are extremely helpful and well organized.
Dr. Salmon is an incredible professor who presents the material clearly and writes very fair exams. She is very personable and responsive over email. There is not an excessive amount of homework, and it all is pretty helpful. I had her for both 2301 and 2302 and she is one of the best professors I have had at the U.
if you can take Salmon, DO IT!!!Explains concepts very clearly. If you're struggling, she is always willing to help and connect you with resources. Explains things in multiple ways to encourage different learning styles. Multiple homeworks every week, but honestly they help a lot.
Dr. Salmon was one of my favorite professors in my time at the University of Minnesota. Her lectures were interactive and contained all the information that we needed for homework assignments and for the tests. She allowed ample time to catch up and pauses to think through practice problems. Her tests were fair and represented the material well.
