she is a very hard teacher, and doesnt cover a lot of material she puts on test.
Needs to be clearer in class on what will be on the Exam's & what's chit chat
No Comments
She is willing to go out of her way to help you, but you need to ask for help. This is one of the professors which comes from the train of thought that you should be studying for her class every waking hour of the day. Informative but very time consuming.
Exams are tough- quite wordy. You must work very hard in order to do well. She expects alot but, is a great professor.
she was very spacy and vauge.tests very hard and didnt cover what she spoke about ,lectures boring and not any fun students do not interact, not willing to work with students.DON'T TAKE
she was pretty clear in her teachings and was very helpful
She is the best professor I've had. Her tests are challenging, yet fair. Always available for students. Very approachable-knows her stuff. You will work hard in her class so if you're lazy you won't do well.
You couldn't ask for a better stats prof. She is a genuinely nice person and is not arrogant and rude like most of the stats profs in the psych dept. She is always willing to help you and will not make you feel stupid when you ask questions.
best stats teacher you could ever take. very lenient on due dates and will bend over backwards to help you out (comes on campus on Sundays). Yes, the tests are hard but if you get help and stay focused you will do well
Is i very kind hearted person, but is not the best teacher. There is alot of work done in her course, and many essays to do. Essays are hard, i had a hard time on figuring out what she really wanted in them. Tests are kind of tricky and worded hard.
Not easy...it's freakin stats. But if you do the homework and the labs you're cool
Great Professor. Stats is always a tough course regardless of who is teaching it but Prof. McGinnis is extremely helpful and only gives homework that is needed to pass the tests with flying colors. I would definitly take her again!
Great professor. Everyone should take any class she teaches. She is fair and really, really nice.
Dr.McGinnis is the best teacher. she loves her students and will do anything to help you out. Her tests are hard but taking her classes are worth it. she will do anything to help you get a great grade.
Such a sweet lady and she loves the students!!Her tests are hard and you must study, but she is always available to help students. Great teacher and person
It is sad when a professor has a bias against those who are not in the major that they teach.
Actually I am not a Psy major and I received a lot of help. Dr McGinnis helped me find journal articles for papers and reviewed my outlines. Her tests were challenging but not too bad if you attend class and take reasonable notes. She was in her office all the time meeting with students.
Must write three journal review papers (6-10pgs) that are worth 30 percent of your grade. No instruction given on how to write them. I do not recommend this prof for non-psych majors. Exams typically fair if you are prepared.
She is a good professor. She really cares about her students. The material is difficult, but if you study and work hard you'll do fine. I passed with a B+.
Cares about students, approachable, difficult sub. matter, must attend class to do well, extremely hard tests, uses definitional formulas instead of computational, several teaching assistants for student use, would take professor again, eccentric looking
She really wants her students to do well and she does provide as much help as possible. The class wasn't easy, but is possible to pass if you put effort into it.
She constantly makes fun of her prior classes and hopes were not like them. She's kind of weird.....and speaks like a lazy little robot. Somehow, she was frozen in the 60's and rethawed 2 days ago. She is most certainly a poopy-head
This lady and her purple hair is ridiculous. You have 3 essays due + tests over the semester. She criticizes every line your paper and then says your paper is all over the place, when she's the one who's all over the place. She will make your life a living hell. Do not take her..warning
I have never had such a critical teacher in my life. I actually cried when I got my first paper back from her. She comments on every single sentence, and the way she comments is actually RUDE. She expects Graduate level papers from a 300 level undergrad class. It is ridiculous.
Just an awful professor, terrible!
She's a psychology teacher, that thinks she has a degree in English that teaches a successful aging class, yet she dyes her hair green and purple and is still trying to find out who she is. She's a physchological oxy-moron. DO NOT take her, I'm not exagerating.
No direction given on how to write papers, but plenty of critisizm directed towards us on our papers. McGinnis is the most condescending teacher I have ever met. She literally makes you feel terrible. Thats not what teachers should do, especially psychology teachers. I would not take a class with this green haired lady ever again.
she actually makes fun of students grades on tests (by name!!)as she is handing them back. She gives sample essays which she claims are some of the best ones submitted, yet the highest score given is a 72%. The most critical and derranged professor I have ever had. Needs to go to a psychologist instead of teach psychology.
All the other comments are actually true. Instead of encouraging you, she will put you down on the papers you submit(to turnitin.com), to check for plagiarism. She's just plain nasty, there is no other way to put it. I would NOT recommend taking her, if it's possible. Though Lombardo is not much better.
I know at least 5 people now that have dropped this class. All because of a professor whos only interest is to demean her students, and previous classes. I do not like this lady. She's a terrible teacher and an even worse person. She has some kind of superiority complex, ex. the better your paper is, the more she'll knock you down. It's confusing
Prof McGinnis has lost sight of the level of this course. The demands are greater than full-time working students can handle. She says that you should spend 18 hours per week preparing etc. for the course. I would avoid this course with her if possible.
The Worst encountered thus far,, anywhere.
Extremely mean-spirited. She'll give you journals to include in your paper and then say the journal you included is "irrelevant"? This should be a good class, McGinnis makes it alful. I hate going to class. She makes fun of her prior classes everyday. I cant stand the green hair and the mean attitude. AVOID if you can.
I want to give her a essay to write, the question would by "Why am I (Mcginnis) so mean?". And then I'll critique the hell out of it and give her a 57, just like she did to me.
large negative aura surrounds this lady. she takes her insecurities out on the students. just an alful teacher, 3-9 pg research essays due + 3 lengthy tests. she will make fun of you on your essay even if you show her an outline. tests are hard, multiple choice and short answer. she'll get you on the answer part. MUST STRESS alful teacher, alful alf
Don't plan on having a life the entire semester you take this course. She is a better option than Stewart but really is the lesser of two evils-she piles on material, labs and homework-none of which you actually get back in time to use it to study for the test. Is nice enough to provide a pretest for the computational part, but tests are a killer.
there will be no complaining about her for 251!it's the class that is a lot of work, and a it is a very hard subject no matter who's teaching it. it's math, so to learn these things you need to practice, so a lot of homework is needed.she structures things very well to help you learn.and if you need help she tries her best to help you!
Terrible...A wonderful subject ruined by a prof.
She is very unclear about what she wants on the papers. I had her look over my outline and went to her for help, but the feedback I got in her office was very different from the feedback I received on the papers. VERY UNCLEAR! Avoid at all costs!
she is very critical, almost demeaning in her comments to you on your papers. she makes you feel terrible and thats not what this class is about. extremely demanding, but unclear with what she wants? tests are very difficult. i would not reccomend this teacher. purple hair? when your 20 it's cool, when your 65, it's not. figure out who you are
very two-faced and does not care if the students are learning the material. previous good ratings are wrong. this lady is bad, very ungenuine and like last comment said "critical" sums it up pretty good.
i cant wait till this class is done, Ginnie is terrible, she makes fun of her other classes so much, it makes you think what she says about us. other comments are 100% valid. she is very manipulative, and just a bad person. why be like that?
it's finally over... what a terrible teacher. statistics is a hard subject to begin with, but a bad teacher makes it even worse. dont take this halloween special or you're GPA will be in for it. trust me, i just passed with a 2.1 and i studied every other day for this class.
Terrible attitude. Very 2-faced. Expects PHD papers from undergrad students. Other comments are right. She always makes fun of her other classes, she has problems communicating what she wants, but no problem marking you down. I did not like her one bit
The class is really interesting, the two papers can be a little hard because this class is the first time many students are exposed to APA guidelines. The exams aren't to hard. As long as you keep up on studying you will do just fine.
She gives awesome feedback on our papers that helps us improve our writing and understanding of the material.
I don't get all these negative comments. Yeah, 251 is hard and you have to actually work. cry me a river. i got C's in math all H.S., never took a college math and 4 pointed her stats class. great paper feedback. more available to help than any other prof ive had. writing requirment is same for all OU 300+ psych classes so quit ****ing.
Very poor teacher, don't believe anyone that says otherwise. Expects you to grasp difficult statistical matter within weeks, only thing is (sshhhh) were not math majors? HHmmm. What a dilemna? Watch out with this one, or your GPA will be in for it. And what's up with the multi-colored hair? It's not cool when your 70
I find the class hard, but not because of the teacher. This is my first 300 level pych class. The professor isn't a terrible teacher. She's pretty good at explaining the material. Then again, this is a junior level class and she's supposed to expect certian things from her students.
terrible teacher, very snotty and short-tempered. Grades papers like we are in grad school. I'm not sure why people say she is good, maybe their used to bad teachers or maybe its Ginnie herself. AVOID what I had to go through
I've never had a prof so willing to give help but you must attempt to help yourself.Try going to class,14 of 35 in attendance last week, of course the class seems hard if your never there.Statistics is difficult but the labs are empty every week. It's not the prof,it's lazy students.Just less competition for Grad school.Raised her temper, please!
I love Dr. McGinnis!! she is one of the nicest teachers at O.U. Stats is a hard class, that you HAVE to study for, practice makes perfect. There is also a lot of busy work....but definetly take her over Stewart...She is very understanding, and also has T.A.s that are always there to help. This is a class, that you actually learn.
she is a good teacher i dont know why people would say she is not....this class is very hard but you have to take it if you are in the phy program she is very understanding and will help you if you try and go to every class...and no it is not he her making the comments this is a student
hint: the good ratings are from Ginnie herself and the bad ones are from the students. I was a TA last semester for 251 stats and I even thought she was hyper-critical. psychology students never take math and its difficult for them. Avoid her if you can, trust me... geez
Cut this former flower child some slack. She is tough but if you try, she will bend over backwards to help you succeed. She gave extra credit for attendance, non-psych OU seminars and redoing your own papers. She is enthusiastic when you participate and is an interesting lecturer. If you learn it, you will earn the grade. She earned a chili pepper!
I had her for stats, and it was a difficult class for a lot of people. Don't blame the teacher because the material is difficult. If you go to class and do the homework she is very willing to help you out if you are having problems...that's what makes a teacher good..the dedication to her students.
This class is a lot of work. She began the semester saying if you work full time and are going to school full time you should drop but i did both and ended up with a 3.6. You have to go to class, and i NEVER read the book although many said it did help them. It's all math, but there are always places you can go for help. I would take her again.
A very hard and demanding class, but she's probably the best prof for it. She gives you formulas, and HW&labs can help increase your grades, although they take up alot of time. Go to lab sessions and u should be fine. Test review is very similar to actual test. Many conceptual questions for HW, lab and exams, so be prepared to write tedious answers.

Stat's is a demanding class and in order to do well you will have to devote 15-30hrs a week. Lot's of HW and lab's but if you do the work and go to class you will do just fine. Dr. McGinnis is an awesome professor and teaches the class well. Her TA's will help out alot too. Study guides help out for the tests.
Very hard class, but she is a great professor. Make sure you attend all classes. The teacher's assistants are great help too. Homework/labs 50% of grade, tests 50% of grade. Read book, and study hard. Gives practice tests which really help for the test. Dont fall behind and get help if you need it.
Class is ok. There are 2 papers, that she expects way too much of her students. She basically stated that it is impossible to get an A on the papers. The test are kinda tough, and consists of information not writing on the notes, but that she says in class. The teacher is helpful, and unique!
She is the best professor for this class. When taking this class you need to be prepared to work, especially if you aren't a math person. By the end of the class you need to understand the math and why it works. I would definately recommend everyone to take her for stats!!
Statistics is definitely not easy, however Dr. McGinnis makes it possible not only to learn but to pass! You have to do the work which is very time consuming but will help, especially since 50% of your grade is homework. The tests are hard but not impossible and she gives a practice test beforehand which is a huge help! I highly reccommend her!
She isn't helpful as far as the homework goes, she wants you to only deal with her TA's and the instructions are SO VAGUE that you have to go to lab sessions just to figure out what to do! She doesn't understand that people have lives outside of class. I recommend finding a different professor.
how students think she is a good teacher is beyond me. hyper-critical of students. practice tests do little to prepare you for the real test. she never answers questions about homework. and homework is NOT worth 50 % of class. why did someone say that? i would look for someone else. not down to earth and has little real world experience, if any.
Interesting class. Prof. McGinnis is very knowledgeable on the subject and very enthusiastic in her presentation. The tests are challenging but not impossible as long as you study-notecards help!, the papers are also not impossible-yes, you can get an A..I did! I highly recommend taking a class with her. IMO, she is the best prof I've ever had!
Stats is naturally a hard class and pro. does not make it any easier. If you have a full time job or other classes do not take this class. U will need a min. 3hrs to complete each HW and 1-3 assisnments will b due per class. If possible find another professor or DO NOT TAKE.
I worked full time and had another class and I still was able to achieve a 3.2 which is good for this type of class. The homework is easy to get A's on and is worth 50 percent of your grade. As long as you take it seriously for one semester you can put stats behind you with a decent GPA. I'm glad i took her instead of someone else.
Terrible professor. She should pick another profession that suits her better... you know, something that requires a person to be rude, intolerant, degrading, and distant. oh, i guess oakland IS the best place for her. I'd post more details, but she's the kind of professor that would mark me down if she knew I was saying such slanderous things.
Prof McGinnis is one of the most helpful profs I ever had. If you are not lazy you will do very well in her class. Remember when registering for classes to not believe all of the future OU dropouts who claimed she was hard and terrible. People who say that are the ones who never go to class, yet expect to get an A. If you're smart you'll do well.
Good prof. Stats is hard but you will have some useful skills when you finish. Can be bad tempered sometimes but who isn't? Would definitely take if you are willing to do your homework.
dont take! worst class.
Okay as a teacher, horrible as a person. Don't ask any questions because she will make you feel like an idiot. Her papers are really demanding, and difficult to do well on. She expects you to know exactly what she wants in a paper even if you have never written one for Psych before. Moderate multiple choice tests.
The most difficult of profs to take for stats but ultimately worth it. If you are going to grad school in psych you will be glad she didn't water anything down! GO TO CLASS she teaches you shortcuts and gives hints about tests. Always be nice and receptive (and never give attitude)she will be more likely to help you. She is also just a cool person!
Prof. McGinnis is one of the coolest teachers i have had at OU, she is hard, her lectures are confusing, and you need to read the chapters in order to do good. Extra study times are needed, and study groups are a must to do good in the class, but other then that, you LEARN the material!
Instructions are kind of clear...her expectations are clear...shes very ornery and easily to get upset, very rude, and thinks people are trying to challenge her for no reason and doesn't understand that students has lives outside of class...pick another professor that actually care about there student and there students success
She is very helpful and fair. Lectures are clear and she cares about helping students understand. The class itself is difficult and requires you to make use of the book and do a lot of work outside of class. I wouldn't recommend this class if you have an extremely busy schedule, as the amount of work is demanding. Overall, I learned a lot.
She comes across as very nice at first, because she is understands that sometimes you get stuck and frustrated, so assignments have a 1st and 2nd due date w/out penalty. If you ask a question, she treats you like you're an idiot. She does not belong teaching. She has no idea how to teach someone who stats doesn't come easily to. Wouldn't recommend.
Don't let these ratings fool you,she is GREAT. The course is hard, but she is great and wants students to succeed. Gives you practice tests with the formulas as they will appear on the Exams. Go to class, do the homework/labs, can turn in all assignments one class late. Also, attend a lab session if you are unclear about anything. Take her!
I am an 'A' student and a psychology major. However, I had to work hard for a 'C' in this class. She takes forever going over notes and tells you what she covers in class will be on the exam...lie. Exam questions are hard to understand and the two research papers she doesn't even explain what she want's on them. HATED EVERY SECOND OF THIS CLASS.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD.
She is a great professor that goes out of her way to make sure that her students understand the material. If you attend the class, do the assignments, and read the book, you will do well in the course despite the difficult topic. She is awesome!
I have taken her for Psy251 and now Psy 323. Taking her for 251 was beneficial, she was very helpful and understanding. 323 was a different story, multiple choice tests had very unclear questions. You have to write 2 big papers that she gives no real direction on, you do get the opportunity to redo them for extra points. Take for 251, not 323.
This class is more tedious than hard. There's a lot of work to do to keep up with what you're learning, but there are TA's to help you with homework and labs, and practice tests that help a lot. The book will be your best friend. With all of that, this class wasn't a huge nightmare for me.
There was a lot of work required for her class. It was a lot more than I've done for any other class..the exams aren't too hard if you do the entire practice exam. Personally I found the labs on Spss to be tedious and not helpful. You really have to do well on everything, labs, homework and exams to do well in the class. I wouldn't recommend her..
Professor McGinnis's Psy 323 class is much more interesting than I thought it would be. The exams are fair and almost everyone I spoke to got an A or a B. She gives a lot of feedback on the first essay and if you follow her suggestions, you can get a much better grade on the second essay (I did!). I would recommend this class - Psy 323.
This class does require a lot of work, if you aren't dedicated to receiving a good grade in a medium-hard statistics class, you probably will not fare very well. That said, she is by far my favorite professor so far. Very friendly, helpful, passionate about her subject, and always in a good mood. I never thought I would like stats before her class!
She does not seem to care about her students' performances or whether or not they actually learn anything.
This prof is one of the best I've had at OU. I never thought I would actually like stats until I took her 251 class. It's math though so you obviously have to try, go to class and do the homework. Her 323 class was a bit challenging but if you go to class you'll do well. She is so willing to help, more so than any other prof I've had! Awesome!
Very confusing, very boring, very spacy. I had a really hard time understanding the material, and ended up having to drop to save my grade point. Not recommended.
I would NOT recommend this professor. She is very spacy, very confusing, her slideshow material is useless in comparison to what is on the exams. She hasn't published anything in years, yet she is very strict with APA as if she is stuck in her old ways. Horrible professor...PSY majors, watch out!
I have no idea how this teacher has good reviews. She gives long lectures that are boring and tedious. She is EXTREMELY unclear on every summary and essay. She have me a 0 on the first summary and when I emailed her asking for help on why I got that grade, she was very rude and mean about the whole thing. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER
Extremely unclear in anything she discusses. When asked for help her reply would be "i did that in class" regardless of what you asked her. What she lectures is not representative of the test, neither is the " practice exam". Does not care if you understand the subject. TAs are even worse. will not return assignments until after the exam. Dont take
Dr. McGinnis is one of the most helpful and approachable professors I've had at OU! If you show up to class and are putting in an effort she is very understanding and willing to work with you. I found copying down her examples and taking notes very helpful. This class required a lot of study time so your grade will reflect the effort you put in.
Class is difficult but McGinnis will always go over stuff again and in different ways to help. A lot of homework but they act as a buffer in case you get a bad test grade. Labs are time consuming. Always willing to give an extension on homework and labs!!!! Use the book and the TAs and you will pass.
Awesome professor. Understanding in so many ways. She cares about her students and their success! Stats is tough, and she guides you through the entire way!!
Dr. McGinnis is easily one of the best professors that I have had at OU. She is very kind, and easy to approach with any questions or concerns about the material. She's helpful with feedback and gives opportunities to boost your grade. I wish I could take her again!
Dr. McGinnis is a very positive professor. She has high expectations but she's willing to work with her students so that they achieve them. She's so cool to talk to, and I loved taking her.
The tests are tough, I mean it is statistics. She goes out of her way to help if you get lost in the labs and homework. TAs are helpful, and the review sessions before the exams helped a ton.
The amount of complaints Dr. Mcginnis receives is completely unfair. Do not hesitate to take her class. She is a wonderful professor who will bend over backwards for students. There is a large work load (to be expected) but if you put show that you dedicated and putting in effort, it will be recognized. Not an easy A, but a class well worth taking!
What a great prof. She's super cool and laid back! It's college, it's not supposed to be 1st grade level work. She's lenient and really helpful.
Her papers are very tough and isn't clear on secondary sources. I would not take another class with her again!
She's the kind of person I wouldn't mind having coffee with, but as a teacher she isn't engaging at all. She's asked a question to the class maybe twice the entire semester and just rambles on with power points constantly, not involving the students at all. The papers are horribly confusing and take alot of time.
Dr. McGinnis is by far the worst. Her lectures are awesome till you get to the test and she picks material that was not reviewed clearly in class. She contradicts herself constantly with the specifics of her papers. She will say you can do whatever you would like in this paper then give you a poor grade because it is not the way she wanted it.
During lectures, Dr. McGinnis likes to talk about all the research she has done and who she knows in the Psych world. Some of the lectures are awesome and easy to understand, but she does not use the same language on her tests as she would in class. She also likes to make up for the rough semester by giving points at the end. Nice, but not enough.
It is a hard class so don't expect to do well unless you try and put time into it. The professor will help you in any way she can and gives you many chances to do better. She genuinely wants you to do well.
Dr. McGinnis is amazing! She's always willing to help, she's caring, and really knows her statistics. She assigns a lot of work, but it's all beneficial. You end up getting a solid grasp on the material and it's really helpful if you're working/doing research in a lab or plan on going onto grad school. Take her for stats, you won't regret it.
Put in effort & you'll be fine. This course is not an easy A. It is important to attend lectures, read the text, & do the homework+labs. If you do all of this then you will easily pass! She also gives 5 pts extra credit @ end of semester if you fill out the survey after the final and some extra credit points for doing all labs & hw. SO helpful.
what a horribly boring course - i thought the focus would be more on the adulthood, being an adult - but it is more focused on aging and I feel like the title is misleading. I don't feel like I am learning in this class. We talk about articles but I don't feel like i am learning. The slides are mundane and aren't provided on moodle - very unhelpful
I've been in her stats class for only two weeks and I love her. She gave me 2 extra credit points just for coming to office hours. She seems like she knows her stuff and is willing to help you so you succeed. This class has a bad rep but so far I see nothing too complicated. She also gives extra points for doing all of the assignments. She's great!
Probably one of the worst professors ive had. She thinks she says something in lecture and actually does not. Because she has a Ph. d she is smarter than you, that is her attitude
An extremely challenging and demanding course. Lots of HW and labs, little extra credit that doesn't help much with your grade. She reads the slides to you and rarely works out problems in class. This is a math course, hence problems should be worked out every period. Practice exams were helpful. Easier than other profs for this class so I hear.
This class is the hardest class I have taken for my psychology major and has a reputation for its difficulty. She lectures but doesnt do problems very often, which would help since this is very math heavy. The TAs were sometimes helpful. Study her slides and do all the HW and youll pass. Its not an easy A but with extra credit, youll get a B.
She is a super nice person to have coffee with. her lectures and tests are crazy. u have to study so much and be on your A game. Dont take this class if youre a psych major. safe yourself headache, time, and stress.
I taught myself through the book because it was WAY more understandable than her lectures. I asked her to clarify ONE question off of the homework and she blows me off before I could even say anything. TAs are available but she's SO strict on the availability that you don't even want to go to them. Do the HW and maybe you'll get a good grade.
Not an easy professor by any means but hey... you're in college. I learned a lot in this class! If you want an easy A I don't recommend, but if you want to learn from a great professor... I highly recommend. She gives bounces point for exams and 2 points of extra credit if you come to her office hours! She's also a funny lady, I enjoyed her class.
She is on my list of favorite professors at OU. She's very understanding, and truly cares about her students. She gives bounces points on exams! The exams are difficult, but if you study you'll do fine. Oh and get ready to read lots of articles! overall great class, I highly recommend!
Debra McGinnis was a decent professor. Statistics is a difficult class to begin w/ & adding the conceptual aspect made it even worse. This class is based off of the lectures, she doesn't explain concepts well at all. She will ask if we understand & if we say no, she'll tell us we need to figure it out & move on. Great lady but doesn't explain well.
I took her for my stats class which is required for a psych degree. She does not explain well and reads off the powerpoints. Once in a while, she will work out a problem but even then it is confusing. Teach yourself from the powerpoints and book. HW is straight forward but tests have very little math and mainly include multiple choice questions.
Statistics in Psychology is already a difficult class, to begin with. Overall she is a decent person, but not a great teacher. As she is someone that already knows stats she doesn't explain it very well. She reads off the slides and doesn't do examples. For a math class, you have to show how to do the computations which she didn't.
Dr. McGinnis is a person who cares about her students and is very knowledgeable in statistics. However, her lectures bounce around and makes you feel stupid when asking questions, telling you should know this. There is a lot of homework, but it helps. Does practice tests! Great person, not teacher.
She seems very nice when you video chat with her for credit, but if you email her questions or ask for any sort of help she just tells you to read the syllabus. Her papers are incredibly hard and her feedback is so unnecessarily rude. Instead of giving helpful feedback she makes you feel like an idiot for any mistakes you made. Don't take her.
I dont normally put ratings on here but I had to for this professor. She is extremely rude & pretentious when she really has no reason to be. Taking her online was a nightmare. Essay guidelines are extremely longwinded, which makes it difficult to actually understand what she wants. Feedback is rude & very unhelpful.
She is good at teaching course material, but is the worst professors for papers. Have you gotten A's on papers routinely throughout college? Prepare for her to tear you to shreds with no explanation. Incredibly rude on feedback. Will mark you down for things on a paper but not tell you why. Not helpful for improvement. Vague grading criteria.
Do yourself a favor and don't take her. I like her as a person, not so much as a prof. She told the class to retake basic writing courses because she didn't feel anybody was writing to her standard. If the whole class is struggling, maybe it's not the students. Other than that, she was fine. If you're ok with being confused, then go ahead.
Dr. McGinnis allows study guides for open note exams which is always a plus, if you do the work on the review you probably will be fine on exams ( B+ avg.). However the essays are brutal, I received a C on both essays with confusing feedback. The rubric doesn't help and the whole class struggled with "organization of ideas".
It was as difficult as you would think statistics is. However, if you watch her lectures, come to class, and meet with the TA's for questions you will pass. Cons were that she had monthly mandatory check-up meetings with her and mandatory TA meetings. Also that we had homework, SPSS, and quizzes due almost every week and sometimes exams as well.
You need to work, but as long as you do the readings and watch the lecture videos, you'll do pretty good. Go to the TAs and ask questions, they're a big help in me getting a good grade
Told the entire class to take a writing class because we wrote so bad. Her instructions were very confusing. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRUMTANCES TAKE THIS CLASS !!!
Her mandatory class meetings are just an opportunity for her to monologue for an hour without being helpful in any way. She's unbearably passive aggressive and incredibly out of touch with her expectations of how "easy" the material is because she's been doing this for 40 years; what is easy for her is very difficult for most. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
EMPHASIS on tough grader. This professor uses a decades old grading system for essays. She is unclear with guidelines despite having three pages of instructions. She also wants students to use suggested topics and does not approve of original ideas usually. The class itself was wonderful and fair. The essays were generally impossible.
She expects so much without telling us what to do. I can go on and on about how terrible she is. She grades us like we are psychologists and doesn't listen to feedback. Tells us to email her, but yells at us when we do email her. Her quiz/exam questions are a paragraph long and only 30 sec. to answer each question. If you take her, GOOD LUCK.
Told the entire class to take a writing class because we wrote so bad. Her instructions were very confusing. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS CLASS
3 exams worth 22% of your grade each= 66% of your total grade. I have taken the study guide and filled it in till there was no more space left. Her exams are hard. This is the first class at OU I will not be getting an A in. Had to take her because I am graduating next semester.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Her grading is beyond confusing, she doesn’t lecture in class, and counts on us to correct her mistakes in class when she does an example problem. (NOTE: she is not aware she is making mistakes on it either!) This is the one psych course I will probably not even pass due to this!
Shes a great person, but not so great teacher. Has us rely on online lectures. We do in class activities the day things are do. Be ready for 2 long assignments due each week. Cumulative exams. Go to every class or else youll miss something. Ask lots of questions.
Class is extremely hard and the professor is not understanding of students circumstances at all. Very tough grader and refuses to accept extra help teaching the class from the four TAs. Doesn't answer questions well and makes you feel like it's your fault for doing bad when she is the problem. Only take this class if you want to cry all semester.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE THIS CLASS. I AM WARNING YOU. I am a 3.7 GPA student in my senior year. I have taken countless Psychology classes/professors over the past 4 years. SHE IS A TERRIBLE EDUCATOR. YOUR GPA WILL SUFFER.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF! YOUR GPA AND MENTAL HEALTH WILL SUFFER!
McGinnis is definitely one of the hardest graders that I've had. She is very straight forward and does have extremely high standards for her students. If you want an easy professor for this course, definitely take someone different but I still managed to appreciate her feedback. Read the instructions thoroughly and you'll probably be fine
strict professor
Unprofessional, rude, annoying, and gives out too much homework
This was by far my worst experience with a prof at OU. She is not understanding of her student's time, and gives out a ridiculous amount of homework with unrealistic grading expectations. Her grading criteria is not clear. I literally gave up on her class due to the amount of stress it gave me. Stay away, stay far, far away from this prof.
Her expectations for the essays are insane. Says to make essays like NYT article, but then marks u down for including an intro paragraph? Her lectures r fine and somewhat enjoyable. If another profff is available, take them lol. Tests are open note but not open google, so theres a system to track that. She makes things harder than need be
She is awful on grading. Inconsistent and rude.
This professor makes every assignment difficult and confusing. She will send out pages upon pages of instructions for one simple essay. Nothing is ever good enough for her. She is mean in her replies and condescending. Makes every assignment off-putting. Safe yourself your mental health and take another professor.
This professor is making me want to quit school.
Quizzes do not align with lectures, yet she claims. Expects students to b authors when writing. Online, yet expects required meetings to work in her schedule. If u even try to reach out for help her responses r SUPER unprofessional, gives not a hint for help and basically tells u to figure it out yourself. save ur mental health and dont take her!!!
This professor has been by far one of my hardest classes and I am in my junior year. The essays are graded as if you are a world-renowned psychologist. The tests questions are worded weird. She responds to emails in not the nicest way. In her "meetings" she seems cool, not as a teacher though. Feedback from this professor on assignments is a pain.
I love Dr. McGinnis! Stats was a tough class, but once you get to talk to her, Dr. McGinnis is willing to do whatever she can to help you succeed. She posts extra help on her Moodle and is understanding if an assignment needs to be submitted late (if you reach out!) She made this tough class bearable! Thank you Dr McGinnis!!
I thought these reviews were dramatic. Literally the worst prof that I have ever had. She needs to retire because she is so out of touch with reality. Grades everything like we have a PhD. Went to talk to her about my grade and she was borderline racist (I'm Asian), she said something along the lines that I am supposed to be smart. DO NOT TAKE.
This class was a real challenge, but unstuck AI and the free textbook were lifesavers. The professor has high expectations, but if you put in the work, you can succeed. Avoid the temptation of your phone during lectures and stay engaged.
Debroah needs to get a grip. Its astonishing to see how much we pay for school to get stuck with small, brained professors like this. Wasted money and time. Just don't take anything to do with ms debroh!
