Her online class is confusing. Questions are answered after due date of assignment. Her disorganization is hard to handle. The unclear class info. makes me wonder...shouldn't an English teacher be able to write so that we can understand, not misunderstand&
teacher was so easy, do the work, go to class and you'll get an a for sure. You would have to be an idiot to fail, cause she is an easy essay greater, sit in the front of the class, and don't make her stop the class 'cause you were talking, she'll put you on her**** list!
Very confusing. Questions on tests are about things were didn't learn about. Typos on the test too....
Inst. takes on too many students and results in a great lack of organization. To the point, attempts to be just in her decisions and teaches her material in a speedy and brief manner which may not be suitable for all students. Take at your own risk; an A student may get a C.
Beware when taking online course with her-she has strict rules and never really makes herself available directly if you need help. She has some ?s on quizzes we didn't cover. Just make sure you do ALL the reading and then some cuz then you will be totally lost.
This was the worst teacher I have ever had. She was very unorganized and did not seem to know how to host an online course. The assignments were unclear and we were tested on many things we were not assigned. Beware of this teacher and I advise not taking her class.

Horrible teacher! Does not know how to teach an online class!
She is a very tough teacher. I am one of those A students that got far from that grade in her class. Three words- Don't Take Her!
BIGGEST MISTAKE I EVER MADE WAS TAKING HER CLASS!
Teacher was helpful and grading was always accompanied with helpful comments. Our discussion topics tended to be too deep for my taste. All you need to do is download the syllabus and make sure to stick to it I mean like glue!
Complete waste of my time! Worst teacher I have EVER had. She doesn't care about her students and if you dont know an answer, she makes you feel stupid. Her syllabus was incomplete, and if you try to tell her what she is missing in the syllabus, she will just deny it. MAKE SURE YOU TURN YOUR WORK IN ONTIME, SHE WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK REGARDLESS
Teacher made me work hard and gave me lots of helpful feedback on assignments. I was going to take her Eng 4 class but is full. Some online teachers dont give you feedback but she does. There is discussion, so if you don't like that then don't take her class. Make sure to read stuff and if you don't understand, write to her and she will help you.
The teacher knows her material. I took her class feeling vary insecure but she helped me. If you email her she will give you advice. The work was hard and there was a lot of it but she lets you revise essays so that makes it easier. Her comments were always helpful and she always got right back to me.
Perhaps it wasn't very wise for me to take an online class, since I ended up doing a lot of the assignments the day they were due... Don't be a slacker, do your research and think about your answers. Some of the essay topics are rather obscure, yet I noticed that few people took advantage of the teacher query thread... if you have questions, ASK!
She wrote a tiny book with errors and then charged $45 for us to buy it. She sez study hard but never sez wut 2 study. You start the class digging to find assignments. Sux.
There was so much reading. Still, she let us go over it with her and discuss it and gave us lots of comments (and a lot of teachers do NOT!) so that let us know how we wer doing. I wanted more examples. Mainly the problem I had was keeping up, so if u take her, ask her for help before the assignment's due and she'll help u.
I really like english and writing. Stevens is an ok teacher, not the best but yet not the worst. The only thing I hated was her tests, like other students said. She tells you to study but never tells you exactly what to study, which really pissed me off. I would read and take notes but I would always get stuck on the tests anyways.
I think that all you people are incorrect. Debra Stevens is an amazing teacher for any student actually looking to learn. She pushes you to think differently and learn new things. If you don't take direction well, or are still in high school (step by step help) mode, then look for a less involved and caring teacher.
This teacher i was not happy with it took her forever to get back to you and grade anything and you weren't interested in the class discussion and essay topics were complete bore just made me dread eng more she should brush up on her material and not have everyone buy a book she wrote for $40 i burned it
S. is VERY helpful. Indicates resources and programs you can use to succeed. Obviously engaged, enthusiastic. Takes a genuine interest. OK, her textbooks is strange & overpriced, but no more so than any other! Basically, she is one of those idealistic types who appreciate an cognitive effort and the grade she gives you will reflect that.
She is very unorganized, never lets you turn in late work. Her book talks about how to communicate with hers, but she is the WORST communicator ever! You either like her or you don't. The way she does her essays are confusing and never make sense. However, if you go to class and do the work it's not that bad. I still would not recommend.
She uses her own textbook that is poorly written. I found her rude, unhelpful, and hard to understand. Grading is inconsistent and harsh. She doesn't explain things well at all. She can't spell or use proper grammar but reams you if you make any small mistake. If you can take another teacher, DEFINITELY do! Horrible teacher.
This course has been my absolute favorite all semester. If you are willing and ready to learn, I highly recommend Ms. Stevens. She clearly puts her expectations on the table and if you pay attention and put in the work, it really pays off. I feel like I have been thoroughly educated and definitely got my moneys worth. I wish I could take her again!
I found this teacher very helpful. She kept three office hours at different times on campus if we needed more help. She helped me outline my essays and explained everything very clearly. I liked her book. Maybe people that didn't didn't read it? Her grading is hard but fair. She does allow you to revise. I didn't enjoy the novel 1984, though.
This class was one if the only classes I have taken on campus that really made me think. I wish we had more people engaged in discussions but that is probably just wishful thinking. Three tests were required plus a final, which I thought was a little overkill. Ms. Stevens was nice but her tests were hard
The first few classes I found Ms Stevens to be all over the place she was extremely confusing and unorganized. I hung in there, while a lot of people dropped, it turn out to be a great decision. If you hang in there through the first essay and test it will all come together and be a great experience. I left her class feeling enlightened.
I took both English 1A and 7 through Professor Stevens and I learned a lot from taking her class. But just be prepared to work very hard to get an A in her classes. She is definitely a tough grader but her criticism is necessary to write better and hone your critical thinking skills.
I really enjoyed Ms. Steven's class. She was very helpful and I learned a lot from the book that she wrote. If you are serious about learning, this is a great introduction to critical thinking.
I think you are all experiencing what I did. The beginning is pretty confusing but it does come together nicely.I like her teaching style and her sense of humor. I did feel much better about my writing and my critical thinking after leaving her class.
Prof is very unclear and vague with directions. Essay directions are all over the place rather than explained in a clear, well-organized sentence. Extremely difficult grader. If your ideas do not align with her ideas even if you show quality analysis, she will dock points. I will not be taking any course that Prof. Stevens will be teaching again.
Very unorganized and lousy lectures. Will ramble on and on about pointless topics never really getting to a main point, or "thesis" (haha). But seriously only take her if she is the last option available. She grades essays hard and it's just a really boring class. If you have to take it you can get though it but you'll wish you weren't there 24/7
Her essay grading is impossible. Before every essay, I've personally come to her office hours for help and advice but even still, the grade she gives out is nowhere close to an A. I've spent hours studying for quizzes from her own book (very poorly written and overpriced), yet her quizzes are just insanely difficult. Will not take again.
Totally agree with the reviews below. Stevens is very unfair with grading. Her quizzes are also very difficult and full of errors. Handwriting is just absolutely atrocious. Will always avoid any classes that she will teach in the future. There is always a reason why certain teachers are chosen last and Stevens is one of them.
Very narrow minded teacher. We read books such as 1984 and her own book 'making sense', which both talks about the freedom of thought and communication, yet she basically doesn't allow any of these things to be done in class. It is difficult to argue your own points and analysis of a topic without being shut down by the prof b/c they are 'wrong'...
I am getting an A in her class so don't get all the negativity. I got a lot of help from her and learned how to write essays so I can take the English 4 class. Lazy students posting here do her an injustice. I can see why they didn't do well. Take her class and you will learn tons of stuff, guys. Just work hard.
I had a C in the beginning of our class this semester. We haven"t got our final grade yet. I just wanna say she helped me write much better. When I began this class my writing was so awful. We learned so much in the class. I am hoping for a B now and think everyone can learn from this class. I didn't understand the 1984 book though.
I am so happy!!! I got an A. I basically had to read everything again though before the final. I had to go to sooooo many office hours and tutoring and have friends look at my rough drafts but it was totally worth it! I showed my mom my book and now she's reading it and thinking of taking this class. Professor Stevens is awesome.
Very intelligent woman. My rating is only mediocre because as a professor, she can be confusing and her expectations aren't always clearly defined. However, I left this class feeling enlightened and thirsty for more knowledge. Don't take this class for an easy A, but do take it if you're an intellectually curious individual.
I took this class over summer it was by far one of the most confusing classes i have ever had english has always been my better subject Shes not clear on any of her assignments Her prompts are extremely vague when you ask a question she either tells you you werent paying attention or gives you this huge lecture on everything but your question
Very kind teacher and she will help you a lot if you go to her office hours. Her class is extremely confusing. The class is very hard to follow and the tests are even harder. She is very intelligent but lacks when trying to convey her point. Be sure to get extra help on writing ALL essays, tough grader.
There are very clear instructions for each essay but they are long, so read all of them. This was an online class, so we had to read instructions online. The reading was really interesting. She gave us a lot of feedback. You have to particpate on discussion board. I found the reviews helpful. Read her comments when you check your grades. I
I really love Professor Stevens. She's helped me countless times in class, after class, and even helped me when I emailed the Reading and Writing Center on campus. Her lectures are thought provoking and urge you to think critically about everything. She graduated at Berkeley and I would consider the equivalent of a Berkeley professor.
Debra Stevens English classes, are very difficult. Especially on her quizzes and Essay grading. Her quizzes are very complex and many of the times the quiz material is not clearly found in either of the course books. And as many students have said her Essay grading is very hard and critical. As some say in her class A students may become D students
She is always there for you online, very helpful. I do not agree that she does not prepare us for quizzes, but it does require a lot of reading of the text books. She discusses things with us on the discussion board (not enough for my needs) and gives us clear guidance. She also gives us practice quizzes. She is very clear and respectful
people who claim that the class was too hard and give her bad feedback based on their bad grades forget that its not debra stevens' fault she expects more from you. the point of the class is to get better at writing, if she didnt criticize you for that writing it would be a waste of time
Why do people like her become teachers? She seems to resent student. She's not interested in helpling.
I'm honestly surprised that people rate her so low. She's a pretty interesting english teacher and graduated from Berkeley. I mean, that has to mean something to people. She cares and is always there to help. Of course there's a lot of course work, but that's what english is about; perfecting the craft of writing. That really should be hard.
got great feedback on all work and learned a ton drops students for non attendance interesting essays very helpful class
I am a second language speaker. I tried 116 two other times. Professor Stevens made me feel very comfortable and was very clear about everything. I think you should take her class.
This was the best teacher I have had so far online. Read the syllabus and follow directions and ask her for help. She responds quickly to all emails, unlike some instructors online. She has 3 quizzes and a final. Lots of discussions (I wish more people would participate. i had a hard time with that. But she's great.
Professor Stevens gives clear feedback and is always available. She makes us think about things beyond the class work. Her quizzes are tough but she will give you a chance to do better in office chat. Her book opened my mind and really made me aware of some of the problems I have reasoning and thinking critically. It also taught me how to improve.
this was my favorite class so far
I don't even think she knows how to do anything. She is so unclear on everything and anything. If you ask for help she'll send you a copy and paste response from her syllabus. I had to get tech support in order to turn in an assignment because apparently I "did it wrong" but the support guy said I did it correctly. SHE IS NO HELP TO YOU!
I took this class online and I really wish I would have taken it with a different teacher on-campus. She is so unclear with instructions. Her book that she wrote is not well-written and she makes you buy the new edition to get more money out of you. It is a struggle to get her to give clear help. She can also be rude and condescending.
This was the most disorganized class online. Assignments scattered in folders. When email for help, she said figure it out on your own "it is in the syllabus". is VERY unclear where to find information on balckboard.
She is one of those people that uses a lot of big words to sound smart but isn't really saying anything at all. She criticizes harshly and is a tough grader. She wrote tons and tons of feedback for my essay but it felt very negative. I always felt like I was a good writer until this class. I feel discouraged with writing essays. Take someone else!
Highly recommend avoiding taking her class at all cost! One of the worst teachers I have ever had! She took 2 days+ to reply to emails after she asked for a prompt response from you. Whenever you ask for help, the answer you would get is refer back to the syllabus. She never actually wanted to help you. Terrible teacher if you ask me
Very unhelpful. If there are 5 assignments that week due, she will remind you of 4 of them. Very easy to miss assignments. Replies to emails slow, then tells you to find the information yourself. If you have as assignment due in Week 5, the link to upload it will be in week 4, -and doesnt tell students. Expects them to find the links themselves
Before summer 2015, she had great reviews. Its 3 days till the semester ends, and now there's nothing but horrible reviews. Extremely full of herself & prides her own written book to being the end all know all of English. Very disorganized information; same week hw can be found in the weeks folder, but submitting in other folders wno warning. bad.
She takes off a ruthless amount of points for simple mistakes. All of her essay topics are broad so you can create your own thesis, but then if she doesn't like your thesis, she gives you the lowest grade of a D available. Admits "could have gotten an A, but my sources although supported my paper, are too bibliographical" If it supports it supports
Took her class last semester. Best online class ever. Great teacher. Looks like the same angry student giving all those ones. She always got right back to me. Never had a problem. The due dates are all on her syllabus. Easy to follow. Awesome readings. I love short stories and plays. Fair and there for her students.
Yay. So glad I took this class. She's so willing to help and very nice. Lots of reading, but the class was great. Always ready to help. Knows her stuff.
Great teacher but a be prepared to read and discuss reading. Very helpful and always there for you.
Before I took this class I didn't understand how my teachers wanted my to answer questions about reading. Her replies were really, really long but they helped me. During online office chat she helped me prepare for quizzes and the final. She was encouraging and never gave up on me. I am not the best english student but this gave me hope
Stevens is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She makes you pay $45 for her book, which is completely useless and poorly written. Her instructions aren't clear and when someone asks for clarification she literally just copy/pastes her original instructions or tells you to read her book again. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
It looks like the same guy or gal is berating this professor. Avoid this troll's comments. I am getting an A so far and her feedback has been phenomenoal. Her instructions are always clear and if we need help, we can go to office hour or email her. She gets right back to us. I strongly encourage students to take. Ofc hrs are great.
There is a lot of reading and the writing is copious; however, I maintained a strict regimen, going to school and working full-time. This teacher is very accessible and inspirational. Go to office hours online. She is awesome to chat with.
I aced advanced/AP English all 4 years of high school yet I'm barely passing this online summer class. She is incredibly vague with everything and makes you read a book she wrote and forces you to conform to her opinion on everything. The quizzes don't make sense because they're all based on her opinions and not facts. She takes forever to grade.
SHE GOES TO THE MATT, ABOVE AND BEYOND
I have had perfect communication with this instructor and enjoy her class. I would recommend this class to anyone seeking to advance to state or university writing classes. She is a scholar, a writer, and more importantly, an engaged and fun teacher who will prepare us for the road ahead. I was skeptical at first after reading the reviews.
I really liked the way she got right back to me and helped me. I do think she could have replied more over the weekends. I work during the week. Her feedback was very reassuring and clear to what I needed to work on, Her email were very helpful. Her grading is ver clear
A very clear set of instructions. She could be more personal. Her criteria were clear but in my emails I wanted more in touch
My significant other and I took her class in 2016 and the guy who is writing was a total jerk. Don't listen to him. He was complaining and not turning in his work all semester. She is wonderful. Her syllabus was really clear and grading fair. Forget this trolls posts
This professor gives us good feedback and I like her help. Ms. Stevens makes this class easy to follow it is well organized but I had trouble with the format for essays so you should learn MLA. She defenitly cares about her student. My own personal experience was bad with English before. But she helped by encouraging and not fautling me so much
Night students get feedback T or Th. A good prof
The professor made this class very easy to follow and I am really happy I took this class. As a mother of two, I don't have a lot of time to figure things out. Her instructions are clear and she will email you back promptly. I wish I could take this class in person. She is so great. I really liked the books she assigned and the way it was organized
Professor stevens does get back to you when you email her. her grading criterias are very clear. I wish she would have office hours later at night. The work she assigns is very interesting. I love to read her replies and the stories were interesting. Assignments and discussions are mandatory but they help prepare for quizzes. Discussions? meh
I am about to finish my degree at UCLA and my friend and I were talking. We both discovered we had her for our online lit course and loved her. Seriously. How can that happen? Take her. You will think and think again.
I am so happy i took this class. It made me think and i ke how her book helps us in our everyday lives Ms. Stevens is not a personal person. I don;t like teachers that are so all about what they are about. She really cares about her students learning and communicates well. I also like her book. I am going to keep it and share it.
I think this teacher is awesome she worked around my schedule and gave great feedback. You should take her and go to her office chats that are so great they help you learn in real time
This professor has taught me how to think outside the box. Yeah, shed say that is not right, but that is how I feel. Her class changed my life in so many ways. Take her class and go to her office chats. She is also very responsive to email.
This was an excellent class. What I learned was so valuable for my future classes. I did not have confidence in writing before. I really had no clue why people wrote essays and she explained. Her class makes us think how we think of writing and it makes us want to write. I strongly suggest anyone who needs a supportive, clear teacher to take her
Ms. Stevens is an amazing instructor she really takes her time to give feedback. Test questions really make you think. Overall, there's 2 essays, 4 assignments, discussions, 2-5 quizzes and the final. Three books to read, including a book she wrote herself which will cost you about 50 bucks. Hit me, I'll sell you her book.
When I met her in person, on campus, she was nothing like I had thought she would be. Her book and her exercises and all that. She might think she is nice but she comes off as really hardass sometimes. In person, she is really nice and wants us to think critically and yeah, so thats it. I got w/the bd reviews. So, tell her what your stuggling with
I found her very clear, but some might disagree. Online classes are hard for some people. She lays it all out on her syllabus and the modules relate. The quizzes and essays are clear. If something is unclear, maybe you don't read instructions?
I made it through a summer class and it was difficult. She communicated with me on the discussion board but took a couple of days before she got back to me on email. Her instructions were really not that difficult. I was irritated by one student on the discussion board. She should make those students stop the whole fight the power thing.
Mandatory purchase of a $55 'textbook' she wrote herself, most of it consisting of diary-like entries poorly meandering around the topic she wishes to describe. It feels like it was written by a freshman in high school despite her 25 years of teaching English. I personally find all the positive reviews of her quite suspect given what I have seen.
I like her feedback. She is also willing to take time to meet us off hours.
My daughter took her summer English 4 class. She seemed to have some trouble managing a couple of students that complained and did not take care of it. I read the complaints and thought, wow. Doesn't somebody stop this stuff on their discussions? She got a B. I am thinking of taking her class. Good idea?
She is a very tough grader but she lets you revise and give good feedbacjk.
So many lessons and long discussions but great feedback for me. Syllabus and modules and announcements then emailstoo much
Great teacher. Even if you hate English she does not have a lot of work for you to do. And she is very helpful and wants you to succeed!!
She is very into getting us into universities and pushed us. I noticed that she takes time with all of us, doesn't play preferences. I wish she could get everybody to talk more.
She's not the best professor. Requires you to rent a book then posts access of it online. Class is easier than my high school English class but teacher frequently goes off topic and mumbles. This is the first in person class she has taught in 10 years and still has a hard time using the online system to update us. Easy A but super frustrating.
She is a very caring person and professor. I think you all should take her class. She makes learning easy. I don't agree with the last post. She posted her own book obnline so we could not fall behind. She lets you use notes during quizes and the final.
She has a lot of instructions, I'll give her that. The problem is, half the time they're wrong or she doesn't write down what she really wants or means and expects you to read her mind. Save yourself the frustration and take somebody else!
My friend and I are taking this class. Participation in discussions does matter. She helps us as we read texts. She cares about her students. I suggest attending the online office hours. She lets you make up points on quizzes.
She cares about her students and gives good feedback on assignments. However, you should possibly avoid the online class if you can. All of her quizzes online always had some error or repeat questions. She also makes you purchase her book... but later uploads it for free without informing students. Overall is so and so, I personally liked her.
This professor is a great professor. She really wants all students to pass and always gives feedback for every assignment that we turn in to her. She really helps students if they are having troubles with her offoce hours and even when you email her. She is a really great professor
i SAID AMAZING LECTURES BECAUSE HER BOOK IS AMAZING. TAKE IT SERIOUS AND READ ALL IN ALL CHAPTERS. i GOT SO MUCH OUT OF IT LAST SEMESTER. CHANGE MY LIFE.
Debra Stevens is a very caring professor, but I did not learn anything from her ENG7 class. There were only 3 graded assignments the whole semester. Half the work we did in class was not put into the grade book. She talks about politics a lot and our essays were also political, if thats your thing then take this class!
I took this class thinking it would be easy cuz my friend had taken it befor and said so but it was NOT easy but I still think you should definitely take this class. Ms. Stevens will always help you. She gets right back to you and gives great comments. I just had a hard time at first but she wrote to me and we got it solved. Take her class.
a wonderful person and great teacher.
I took Debra stevens course over 8 years ago and her lessons on fallacy and her teachings still help me today. this lady has a real passion for her work and you can really learn something from her!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS ONLINE. One of the worst online courses iv ever taken. Extremely poorly worded exams and very late to upload and grade work. Definitely wish I would have taken with another professor
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. Her tests are extremely difficult , she words them awful. Its barely a question at the point because its so hard to read. She takes a long time to grade, and never gives feedback. Ive reached out to this teacher before being friendly and she has been not nice or communicative whatsoever. This is the worst online class .
So basically you have to buy her book that is like $60 and her tests are super hard. They arent worded properly and you would think that you could easily find the answers to her exam based on the book FROM the book. Nope, its takes super long to answer her questions and you cant go back to questions once answered. Her essays are easy, just the test
This course was asynchronous and I can say this was probably one of the worst asynch courses I have taken. The tests are extremely hard- some questions are designed to trick you. You have to buy her $60 textbook and a lot of the information on her canvas page is outdated. The directions on some of the essays are confusing and hard to understand.
