I swear, you won't find a better English teacher. You'll love this class.
Deb touches the soul. She is tough, but fair. She has a way of bringing out the best in her students.
deb is the hottest grammar ho around. and she plays a mean game of pinochle. intelligence wise - when i make my own monster out of scavenged body parts - deb's brain will power my creation. she's so smart. and she won't put down her knitting needles for anyone!
This was the first class I have ever taken where teh students were in tears on the last day because we did not want the class to end. I took this class in fall 2001
She was a tough teacher, but she was awesome. She brought out the best in each of the students. She helped all of us become better writers.
Amazing woman. If you choose to really think in this class you will do well. She makes sure she speaks to everyone in the class so that she can understand and help everyone become a better writer. In her class you aren't completing assignments you are paving the way for your writer's voice to come

she made me think in a different way. i can acually write something good now.
she has real love for teaching english and making a difference to her students.
She is the best English teacher you can find. She helped me think and write in a whole new way.
One of the most fascinating, intelligent people I have ever met. I thoroughly enjoyed her literature class. She is tough on grammar, but credits intelligent thinking and grades fairly. Highly recommended; she just needs to write and publish more!
Lots of writting but in the long run its well worth it! She will make you think and write in an entire new way! English is my least favorite but I actually really enjoyed this class.
very interesting.
Deb has a remarkable teaching style that allows you to trust in your writing and thoughts. She is probably the best teacher you will find in the educational system. If you do not like speaking in a classroom setting I recommend you don’t take this class; but if you really want to learn something about life I strongly recommend you take Deb.
AWsome teacher, as long as you don't mind reading your writing out loud.
awesome awesome awesome.
WONDERFUL! She really cares about you as an individual. She allows you to express yourself in your writing however YOU see fit, doesn't want you to follow form. Lots of writing but easy because she allows you to free think. You would be foolish to take this class from anyone else. She's helpful and so FUN. Lots of great class discussions. A++++++++
Easily the best teacher I have ever had. You learn more from this teacher than you learn from anyone in you life. Her assignment due dates aren't very strict and her assignment topics are loose. Reading your own writing out loud was hard at first but what you learn from it is worth it.
The class was very laid-back, but the teacher expects a lot from you. It was hard to me to do the reading, but if you DO read it the class won't be too hard. There is a lot of reading, though. She is a neat lady and you can be sure there will be tons of interesting discussions.
You can tell she enjoys and cares about what and who she is teaching. The workload is more intense than other 1010 courses-expect to write lots of papers and read them aloud in class. It does help your writing, though. The downside to class was that lectures felt unprepared and you don't get grades or feedback on papers till the end of the course.
Holy Cow she is amazing. If nothing else, you'll get alot out of this class personally. My writing skill has shot up greatly thanks to hear teaching style. She expects alot out of her students, and it feels great when you deliver.I highly recomend this class!
Awesome teacher! I learned more about myself in the this short summer class than I have in the last several years. Makes you read in front of the class regularly and gives you a ton of assignments. You will be doing a lot of writing. But if she were teaching the next level English class I would easily sign up even though it would be a lot of work.
I did the assignments and worked my ass off and ended up with a B+ If you like to kiss ass you'll do fine but don't voice your opinion, because you'll screw yourself in the long run. No feedback and you write alot.
Deb is the best English teacher I have ever had. She teaches you how to expand your thinking, and in turn, how to expand your writing. She introduces you to amazing literature that really makes you take a look inside yourself. She will help you every step of the way if you ask.
Highly recommended!!! She really helped you expand your thoughts on life, in turn, she really helped you with your writing style. Only speak up if you know what your talking about! Discussions always interesting!!
Deb is so amazing! I think she gets everyone excited about writing. There's a lot of writing, but you just get better and better and the ideas come to you faster and faster. She lets you be the writer. She rules! I look forward to going to class!
Amazing teacher! Deb really helped me enjoy writing. There is a lot of writing, but she is lenient on grammar. You get credit if you do the assignments and come to class. Our class time was very enjoyable and we got to know each other very well which I enjoyed. Deb is passionate about her teaching and cares about each student!
GREAT TEACHER. I got a B- but that's because I wasn't able to keep up with all the work that you have to do for the class. If you can handle reading 3+ books and writing 2 or more papers a week I would highly recommend this class. The only problem I had was that I wasn't able to catch her in her office so I wasn't ever able to go over my work.
AMAZING TEACHER. REALLY CARES ABOUT STUDENTS. NON JUDGEMENTAL WRITE WHAT EVER YOU WANT AND BE GRADED FAIR. I WOULD TOTALY TAKE A CLASS FROM HER AGAIN. I LOVED HER CLASS. PLUS YOU DONT NEED TO SPEND A TON OF MONEY ON TEXT BOOKS, IT ROCKED. I SPENT 20 BUCKS IF THAT
Its an OK class, if you dont mind not knowing where you stand until grades come out after semester, and then being graded harshly. I believe she had UNREAL expectations for a 1010 class. I lived with English majors who say their classes required less work. She was open minded/that was cool. But this is not a class a non english major should take!!!
She is pretty much the best teacher you could ever hope for in English. yea, you write a lot, but there's no wrong way to write as long as you write what you feel strongly about. I would highly higly recommend her to anyone.
I have never run across a professor as helpful as Deb Thornton.
You will never meet a more kind, loving, caring professor in your college career. She is more than willing to meet with you and work with you on a one on one basis. Her topics are interesting and she cares a lot about what she teaches and also herr students. You would be a fool not to take classes from her.
Deb is incredible. She not only teaches all you need to know about English and writing, but she helps you to learn even more about yourself. Take this class and you will not regret it.
she helps you become a creative writer
Bed is an amazing teacher. You just have to write what you think. Voice your opinion and she will love you. You do need to do the little bits of reading she assigns in order to do the assignments but she is truly an amazing teacher. She will go one on one with anyone and help them with anything. I will be taking another class from her.
Debra Lynn (sp?) is the best professor at UVhsSC, hands down. Her so-called superiors don't even compare (there's rumor she has none). Whereas I could list other certain professors who are the bane of academia, Deb is its saving grace.
She is a fountain of knowledge and experience. I learned so much from her!
Fantastic teacher. Loves what she does and will help you get better at writing. You will have to work to pass this class.
This class is amazing! You don't get a text book, and all you get for assignments is an essay that is due at each class; but it's only one page long! She won't tell you your grade but says if you try you will pass! Amazing person!!
Deb.. Oh Deb. She is an amazing teacher! It is an easy A, all you do is write you thoughts down on paper and you get rewarded with her deep thoughts. she is extremely hillarious and will help you out with any paper. she will meet with you everyday if needed! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Deb is an amazing professor, she is way helpful and I actually learned how to be a good writer. You do have to read your papers a lot in front of the class. Just do ALL of the papers (one due every class) and you will be fine. And go to class, she likes to see that people care about attending. Write deep stuff and she will like you
This class has changed my life. Deb helped me become a better writer and person. Classes are phenomenal!! and Assignment are open and allow you to interpret.Lots of writing and reading! Which is good; promise. Don't take English from anybody else! you will be missing out severely!!!
Deb is one of my favorite professors of all time! She is a teacher who sincerely cares about her students. She is incredibly intelligent and has crazy metaphors for everything! There was not a day that went by where I wasn't laughing my can off in her class!
amazing teacher
She is more than a teacher. She's a mind opener.
She is one of the craziest but most fun teachers I've had at UVU. She works really well with her students and will do anything to help you succeed. She also looks like she is Jack Blacks identical twin sister.
I have no idea how Deb grades. I turned in all of my papers when they were due, went to class everyday and got an A. She never graded a single paper so I don't know what the grade was based on. Suggestion... always be in class, participate, and turn in assignments. You will probably be fine but no guarantee.
Debra's very unorganized. My class never got feedback the entire semester on any of our papers. She said she had 2 put more time in2 grading her other classes papers. The class discussions were interesting @ times, but for the most part they didn't have much 2 do w/the works we read. Many students final grades for the class were messed up.Avoid her!!
Was referred to her by a friend, thought it was just going to be another English class... I never thought I'd say this, but for the first time, I don't give a crap what my grade is. That's not important. Class discussions are like a support group. This is one class I'll never forget. Do your papers and get an A, not recommended for shy people.
Her tests are pretty hard unless you are way into obscure english rules and then again there were some with more than one answer right and you had to guess which one she wanted you to pick. though you could argue for partial points and sometimes get it. i wouldn't take the class though...
Deb is amazing. She is somewhat hard but is so willin to help you step out. Her class was like a support group. I felt connected to people. She was so tender, and caring. This class is how I think education should be. Attendance was not required, but honestly no one wanted to miss out. She made every minute worth it.I use to hate english and now LO
Deb is an awesome person, and class was fun to go to everyday. But I don't feel I really learned anything at all. A lot of class time was spent joking around and talking about random things. We never really went over the homework because she was constantly getting distracted. I wouldn't take another class from her, I didn't like her teaching style
Deb is the most awesome teacher I have ever had. I have never liked English classes, but Deb's class was the funnest class i have ever taken. She makes the whole class want to be involved. I wouldn't say that she is an easy teacher but as long as you show up to class and do the work you will pass; and i promise you will have fun.
Deb is awesome, I hated English prior to this class. Deb taught me a lot and the class time was amazingm I am so glad I stumbled into this class on my first day of college because it made everything worth it.
I had a great time in her class. I felt that I learned how to be a better writer, though at times it felt very free-form. The manner in which she taught was very organic.
Deb is a wonderful educator. she teaches with her heart and intuition, which is a great learning style for me. She has a very organic method, not incredibly structured. I loved this course. If you make an honest effort you will pass with a high grade
Deb is AMAZING! She is always willing to help you when you need it. English is hard for me but she helped me every way that she could. I would really recomend you taking her class!
She is an amazing teacher. So clear and truly lets the inner writer come out of every single last student!
Deb is AMAZING. Best teacher I have probably ever had. Just do what she asks and you will pass. Oh and remember, YOU ARE THE WRITER (:
One of the best teachers I have ever had.
In this class, we worked through the entire publication process for 2 literary journals. Deb's teaching style is mainly just hands-on experience. She did do a little teaching about typesetting before we got into it, but I wish she would have taught us more. She has a lot of experience and a sense of humor, though.
Never updates canvas so you have no idea how you are doing in the class. Seemed to be an easy grader until the grades came out. Did all my assignments (which is about 3 papers a week) and expected an A. Class gets over and I end with a C+ along with most the other students in the class. On top of all that it's just an overall weird class.
I've always preferred organized teachers, and I definitely wouldn't consider Deb to be one. That being said, in an unexpected way, she ended up being one of the best teachers I've ever had. She is always kind to students, and she helped us create an environment where everyone could grow as writers and individuals, which I am very grateful for.
Amazing teacher. I highly recommend taking this class.
I love Deb. She's a really cool teacher and she is super funny. You get a lot of papers, at least a one-page paper every class. I had a total of 30 or 40ish papers and drafts by the time I finished the semester. Just show up, be involved and actually try and this class is extremely easy. If you can't do that, you shouldn't be going to college.
Deb is an AMAZING teacher. If you take one of her classes, you will not be disappointed. She goes into depth in literature and gives you a reason to think. She is also hilarious and compassionate. She makes you bring out the true writer in you. If you participate in class, you will take much more than just an intro to English class. Love her!
She is a bit weird. Some like it. I didn't. Also, she never provides any feedback about my grade.
She didnt grade most English papers, she just had you share them with the class, which in my opinio taught me more than i would have if she listed off what she as a teacher expects as most college english teachers do. Alot of work but its all easy, easy A just write something. Its the effort she looks for. Even if you write a paragraph not a paper.
So far Deb has been the greatest instructor I have ever had the privilege to interact with during my formal education. This lady is not only a brilliant, but she is also an incredible human being. She's inspired me to think and write in ways I was never capable of doing before. If you like to learn and think and get quality education choose Deb.
Debra is an amazing teacher! She's really willing to work with you and make sure you understand what's going on... she gives you lots of options. the ONLY downside to her class was the class you needed to take with her class "stress management" if at all costs- avoid that class. the teacher in that class was VERY high school. no phones, no talking.
I took English 1010 from Deb. I loved the class, and looked forward to it the most out of all of my classes. She wants you to be comfortable writing and get out of your comfort zone. It is more about having solid ideas and understanding the material rather than technical writing. She is hilarious and cares about every student. Highly recommend.
Deb is a unique and amazing human being. She offers a different perspective about life and effectively allows her students to learn for themselves. This class does require a lot of work, but it all helps you realize your own potential, self worth, and place in the universe. It has been one of the most beneficial classes I have taken in college.
I believe everyone would prefer to have a professor who has a professional background in the subject and is a great teacher. She definitely has a professional background (she shares a minimum of 4 stories per class), but I feel like she lacks the great teacher aspect. I'm more confused coming out of the class than going into it.
Deb is probably the most unique professor I have ever had. This is not your typical English class. I was able to find my personal writing style and learn how to be a confident writer. This class was not only beneficial to my education but also taught me a lot about myself. Deb creates a friendly learning environ. and truly cares about each student.
Her editing class is a little scattered. She is knowledgeable about the subject, however, she doesn't explain things clearly. She would randomly put up assignments and quizzes at 3 am and expect you to take them before class. Her final was way too hard as there was no structure. A lot of trick questions and things that she hadn't explained.
i loved taking Deb's class. If you want a class that you don't have to show up or care about, then take another professor; she doesn't want you either. She's not clear about what your grade is, her organization isn't the best, but if you just show up, write the papers, and have clear communication, you'll not only do great, but you'll learn a lot.
Deb knows editing inside and out, and her lectures are amazing. She regularly reads poetry at the beginning of class - and this semester, often brought a rabbit to class as well. She's extremely compassionate, and, although her quizzes are extraordinarily tough, she is a fair grader and bases grades off participation and effort. Don't stress it.
I loved Deb's class. I will take any classes by her that I can in the future. Just put some effort into your papers and be real with her.
Deb is quick to tell you she despises structure, and I believe this negatively affects her class. There are no guidelines for writing assignments, and no feedback given. While this allows for a lot of freedom in writing, I don't feel like I actually learned anything or improved my writing in her class.
Here's the dilemma, Deb is a great person. I was always laughing in her class. The class itself had no structure. Her tests her super hard and felt they had trick questions. I had no idea what my grade was the whole semester. I did feel like I learned a lot in this class, and yet on the final it was a success to not fail! Yet, I got an A in the end
Deb truly cares about her students. You will have to read your papers out loud every week, which I was not a fan of. My main issue was the lack of organization. I did not know my grade until after the semester had ended. I was constantly confused about the assignments and when they were due. Overall I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
no quizzes, no tough questions on exams, i don't feel i learned something from her. her lecture is really Boring and never teaches you serious knowledge. and you won't know what's going on if you skip one class. her homework never has a guideline and she never tells your grade. i seriously don't suggest English majors take her classes.
Deb's an inspiring teacher that opens up your mind to new perspectives. Her class has a flexible structure and some people didn't enjoy that. I loved the freedom she gave each student to be themselves and write papers on subjects that they personally believed in. Deb is understanding and pushes you outside your comfort zone. Helps you find yourself
You will be writing a lot. There is a paper due before every class. You're graded on attendance. You will have to read your papers out loud to the class, no exceptions. The class didn't really have any structure. Some days were chaotic. I'd take this class again because it was pretty easy but it also was really boring and awkward.
Deb is a great teacher. She has a lot of experience and knows what she's talking about. Some days were a little weird and awkward and sometimes really emotional for some people. If you go in with an open mind, expecting to write a lot and share what you write, you'll do great. There's a lot of freedom as far was what you write about, which is great
She is great at teaching editing! However, she is a bad grammar teacher. She will cover a concept vaguely in class and then give huge with confusing questions and answers (and the correct answers are not shown at then end). I've spent too much time outside of class making up for her ineptitude. Don't take 2050 from her.
Deb is an amazing teacher. Although she is a fair grader, she mostly just wants you to push your creativity and understanding. The material is very well chosen and makes her class unique. Our class was smaller and she facilitated a great friendship between each of the students. Highly recommend taking any of her English courses.
As a person, Deb is fantastic! I adore her. Being a student of Debs was really hard. The class lacked structure. Quizzes and assignments would be posted the night before they were due. Class lectures rarely related to grammar or editing. The majority of our assignments, including Our midterms, werent graded until the week of finals.
I signed up for the class expecting to be taught about English. I was let down when I found out that the lectures were really just a group therapy session, with no substance. She intentionally does not enter any graded assignments in Canvas until the last few days of the semester, so you have no idea what your grade is until then.
Professor Thornton does not upload a single grade, other than attendance. You do not know your grade until it has already been uploaded in your transcript. This leads to confusion. If a professor doesn't upload your assignments, how will you know what your grade is? I am currently going through school administration to change her grading mindset.
Deb is knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. She is very caring as a person. However, she doesn't input grades into canvas until the last second and cares a LOT about attendance, which is the only thing she does consistently grade. She also tends to take over discussions rather than let her students talk. LOTS of reading and writing, too.
This class was dummy lit. Class was cool cause we all sat around and had group discussions over the hw prompts Wich are usualy less tress and actualy interesting. Not lots of Grammer and actual English help was provided but meaning and teaching that you are the writer was critical for my writing.
Deb is the most down to earth woman; I could rave about her all day long. She envelopes her students with a sense of safety to express themselves in the classroom. She emphasizes individually, that "you are the writer", which essentially means, let the creativity and thought patterns flow from you; it is your paper, your expression, your journey!
An entertaining teacher who situates herself neatly in the nuances of language---or she teaches you the grammar fundamentals while she also makes allowance for reasonable language conventions. Also, she applies everything with real-world service learning, which really helps you learn "on the job." I would take her for any class.
If you are honest and upfront, give your all, ask questions and take her answers to heart, you can't NOT get an A. She knows her stuff. She has the driest sense of humor, I laughed every class with her little quirky comments. I wish I wasn't graduating so I could take more classes from her!
My favorite professor I have ever had. There is a normal amount of homework for an English 1010 class. I loved it though.
By far my favorite professor that I've ever had. She's a lovely person and I loved her class. She's super caring, super intelligent, and just an all around incredible teacher. I'm not sure what sort of grader she is really, as I only know what my own grades were and that I got A's. Highly, highly recommend her, though.
Yes you write a lot of papers, but it made me better! Debs class is amazing and I wish she would teach 2010 cause I would definitely take it from her! Show up to class, do the papers, and actively try to be better each time. My writing was good before, but reached another level under Deb. TAKE 1010 FROM DEB THORNTON! She's the bees knees!
Took forever to grade things. Didn't actually teach anything but talked about random things for the whole length of the class.
Class was livestreamed because of Covid, but I loved every minute of it. Deb Thornton is incredible, and she really truly cares about the course material and the students. Each class was a discussion of how the reading affected us. Papers have a lot of creative leeway, and I found this to be a really soul-searching, powerful experience.
Dr. Thornton was the worst professor I have had at UVU. I did not learn one thing the entire year. She talks about nonsense the entire class and then brags about how she inspires students. Essays had no criteria. I would avoid her.
She assigns a lot of reading and writing, but it's easy enough and if you reach out to her for help she is quick to respond and VERY personable and helpful. She really is such a gem. So kind and so inspirational. She is by far my favorite professor I've ever had at UVU. I would take her for every class if I could. I cannot rate her highly enough!
Mrs. Thornton is AMAZING. Although, there are a lot of writing assignments in her class she tells her students that "you are the writer." She truly wants us to become the best writer we can be without interfering on how we should write or what we should write. It wasn't until I was in her class, when I fell in love with writing. I highly recommend!
It is nearly the end of the semester and i have nothing graded besides the quizzes that grade themselves. We had a paper due today that she changed the requirements in the middle of class and I already turned in my paper with no way to unsubmit or change my paper. She also makes empty promises like promising to give feedback on our writing.
Dr. Thornton is one of the best professors at UVU. She respects everyone equally and will help you in any situation. She will listen to you when you need it, and help you overcome challenges that you're facing. Yes, you will need to share your thoughts with the class, but so will everyone else. Don't pass up the chance to better yourself!
I learned close to nothing from her this semester. She forces her students to open up to the class and in order to encourage this she shares her deep trama with the class. She taught me nothing about writing and English, she never graded a single assignment so I have no idea where I stand in the class or if I am writing at a college level. Awful.
I learned nothing about writing in this class. I wrote like 3 papers every week. If you do an assignment you don't get credit but if you don't, then she will give you a 0. It just feels like group therapy with no structure. I asked if she could provide structure or feedback and she told me that I just wanted to be told what to do. Don't take Deb!!!
Deb Thronton has been so amazing in developing my writing ability, I had been out of school for many years before taking her class and I don't regret it at all. She gives lots of writing assignments but don't let that scare you away as they are all great. The word count is too small for me to give her the praise she deserves, just take the class!
The best english class I have ever taken! She cares so much for her students and discussions were so meaningful. She is not a hard grader and as long as you are participating, you will get a good grade. I 100% recommend this class.
She forgets to show up to class frequently and later sends out long emails making up excuses. She doesn't talk about class material AT ALL. She required reading responses but doesn't give prompts. She doesn't have a syllabus available. She requires books but doesn't ever give a direct list of the books so you don't know what your supposed to get.
not a hard class at all if you just do the homework.
Paper every class but you will WANT TO. She really encourages a safe space in her classroom so you can write about your feelings and express deep sentiments which encourages you to write bc its about yourself and in turn makes you a better writer. There was also a lot to learn from the readings and she's the most adorable little lady ever. 5 stars
She was super fun! There was a good chunk of tricky papers, as well as a writing assignment due before every class. She is very understanding though!
I absolutely loved Deborah as an English teacher! Very against the status quo, and encourages you to find your own writing style! You do have to write a lot of papers, which is overwhelming at first, but not so bad after a few weeks. She grades really easy, and really just wants to see you become a better writer!
Cool person, awful teacher. Hasn't graded a single thing with two days left in the semester. No criteria for assignments, zero guidance in class, frequently disorganized and unprepared. Easy class if prepared for high volume of writing. Doesn't teach the material and shuts down opposing opinions. I learned nothing new and wasted time and money.
There was a writing assignment due every week, but they are really helpful for practicing different styles and strategies. She also grades on effort and really wants you to succeed. Participation leads to more learning and understanding about English as well as yourself. Definitely suggest her to anyone looking for an English 1010 class.
Deb is an amazing person and professor, just not for an ENGL 1010 class. It felt like she belonged at the front of a Philosophy or Poetry class, not an Intro to Academic Writing one. She was eager to work one-on-one. However, she seemed unorganized and spontaneous, and she didn't get around to grading any of my work until the end of the semester.
Deb is a good teacher, but her communication skills are lacking. She never mentions any assignments, even if you explicitly ask her what is coming up, and if you miss a class you may be missing a surprise assignment. She also isn't technologically savvy, and hardly ever answers emails. She hasn't graded anything, and the semester is almost over.
Deb is a great person outside of the classroom, but as a professor she's not effective at teaching. She's spent probably 75-80% of classes this semester going on tangents that are very personal and emotional to her but have nothing to do with the class. I hardly learned anything about editing/typesetting besides what I've taught myself before.
Deb's class is a lot of work, but it really helped improve my writing. Lots of papers, but she's understanding. Definitely use Unstuck AI and other study tools - they were lifesavers!
She is so understanding and really just wants your truest most authentic work. She absolutely HATES format writing, her motto is “You are the writer”. Put out your best and she'll give you the best. If you ever have any problems coming to class, just let her know and she understand completely.
She doesn't teach, doesn't update Canvas, doesn't give instructions for papers, and doesn't grade for months. You'll essentially have no idea if you're getting an A or an F until a week after the class is done.
She was such a great teacher; the whole class was engaged and close together. The assignments were kind of a heavy load, but it really wasn't that bad.
