Mrs Thorson is very compassionate towards her material. she knows what she is talking abou. Very knowledgeable lady. She is the kind of teacher that if you need help she will make time to help you in anything it does not have to be class related..

I think that the students that talk bad about the teachers is because they dont put it on themselfs like grown-ups to study as they should. In my opinion, I take two classes with her, she is a great instructor. My favorite thing about her is that she knows what she is saying and teaches.I would to reconmend her to anyone taking Comm. She is a great teach. The person who said she makes you memorize- that is the deal when you take a comm class- you do math in a math class too dude! And we give speeches because it a communication class-why is that shocking. She was understanding and helped outside of class if we needed it. i thought she was cool

I enjoyed and learned a lot in this class. If you have a fear of public speaking you must take this class! She uses great humor and keeps you engaged. I would recommend this class to anyone. Her homwork is easy and as long as you study what she tells you the tests are easy!

For public speaking just do the hw, and do your work and she works with u and she is an easy greater. For small groups she expects u to have the competency of public speaking. She is a great teacher and she knows her stuff really good. I took 2 classes with her and would take more !!

The best English Teacher I ever have At BC. She is fair. Very knowledgeable in her Subject matter. An epitome of a great Teacher. Never had a dull moment in her class. Her requirements in class are the ways you learn her subject which I like about her. She is very considerate.

Although I do not agree with some of her (strong) political comments, she is an AMAZING professor. Her experience, stories, examples all enrich the classroom. She gives you EVERY chance possible to excel and is very helpful. Great sense of humor too!

She is good as far as your writing skills is good. She requires you to write the whole speech and she corrects it as English B1A class. I don't recommend her for people who don't need this class for there major. She ask for 7 speech when the others ask only for 4. Otherwise she is good teacher and you will learn a lot.

I don't particularly enjoy speaking in public but Ms. Thorson helps alleviate the anxiety. She knows her stuff! She says the more you speak in front of the class the more comfortable you'll be speaking in public. The class requires you to work hard. Be prepared to spend a lot of time preparing for your speeches.

Thomson was a great teacher and very animating. She kept the class alive and gave excellent constructive criticism as well as examples. Hope to take more Communication classes with her as my teacher.

Mrs. Thorson is very knowledgeable public speaking. Often times her assignments were vague. She is very opinionated, and class would often times turn into a debate class with students who did not agree with her views. I would have liked more focus and practice with public speaking, and less discussion on social issues.

Took this course over 4 weeks during summer, it was overwhelmingly tough at a few times along the way. Mrs. Thorson makes class very fun and interesting but as others have said, she is very bold but not in a bad way. She turned our class into some great speakers.

Syllabus was emailed to everyone first week and paper copy handed out first day. Last person must not have paid attention. It was a summer class and only 4 weeks long. She helped all of us overcome our fears. Good class.

Ms. Thorson is a good teacher, but brutally honestblunt. Which is not a bad thing, but when you are taking a public speaking class and have a fear of talking in front of people the feedback from her can make one not want to continue to try. At some instances one can say she puts one down because she is so blunt. Would not recommend. Grades hard!

Debra Thorson is an incredibly blunt person, is very open and vocal about her views if this might be a problem for you I would not recommend this class. Her style of instruction is much like kicking a bird out the nest and seeing if it flies, once you get up to do a speech she will not let you quit which shows how much this means to her.

She is very blunt. She is also open, sincere, & honest. She gives great feedback, & seems to truly cares to teach you to be able to function in society. Without her class I would be nowhere near ready for public speaking. She made things fun, while teaching us. She made an effort to show us exactly what she meant. Her speeches were awesome. :)

Mrs. Thorson has been one of my favorite professors. yes, she is a tough lady, but you grow to love that. It's a bit terrifying when you first meet her, but she truly does care. Very straight-forward with what she expects in her class. She can be blunt and will have no problem putting you in your place but she is funny and great conversations arise in the classroom. The speeches are a bit difficult to work on and present but they definitely help with any public anxiety you may have.

Attendance and participation are MANDATORY and ESSENTIAL to your grade!!! She makes you work for your grade but as long as you do your homework and prepare accordingly you will have an easy A. She is definitely one who expresses her opinions whether you like it or not but she is one of my favorite professors so far.

Hardest class I've taken at BC but worth it. You'll learn things in her class that you wouldn't learn anywhere else on campus. She's my favorite professor on campus by far.

I took Comm B1 with her it was one of the best classes at BC. if you do your homework, attend to the class and organize your speech you will get an A. she was very good professor.

This teacher has a very straight forward manner of instructing. You never feel uneasy or nervous about what's expected in the class, because everything previed. Easy class, not much homework other than the work book. The syllabus is irrelevant, she only assigned some chapters out of the work book however at the last Minute said we had to do the entire work book. She is very blunt, strait forward, will put you in your place.

We only had 5 speeches and the first 3 were super easy. the informative and persuasive weren't even hard either but they were just longer (8-10min) and required a power point. Taking this class really helped me with my fear of public speaking. It was a summer course, but she really helped. She curses like a sailor, has a lot of great stories, and will make you want to come back to class.

Honestly if you take this class over the summer there is a lot of work involved, you typically need to spend and hour our two every night for homework and speeches. Although tough, it was very rewarding, I learned how to be more confidant with my self and conceptualize my ideas. I would definitely recommend this class to a friend.

I Think This Was One Of My Favorite Classes I Haven Tooken At Bakersfield College. It's Crazy To Say How I Have Anxiety When It Comes To Public Speaking And I Passed Her Class. It Was So Much Fun.

Professor Thorson is awesome! This was my first class Comm class, B-1 public speaking, & it was fun. Be present, because she takes roll every day; be on time to every class especially on speech days. Try to remember that she more then likely wrote that part of the text book you are studying, & the entire work book gets graded. Practice, practice.

I took the four week summer class and it was a ton of work but so worth it. Four speeches in four weeks and an entire workbook but no tests. She is serious about dropping you if you don't show up. She is not lenient about being unprepared on speech day. She makes the class really comfortable talking and joking with her and each other. Super fun.

Professor Thorson does an amazing job of taking a subject most people dread, public speaking, and making the class fun and informative. I took it over the summer. Lots of work for 4 weeks but I couldn't imagine enjoying this class nearly as much with any other professor. Thorson herself is extremely outspoken, often with hilarious results.

Public speaking is hard but as long as you can get past the stage fright you'll be fine. What helped most was Mrs. Thorsons sense of humor which makes you feel at ease in her class and not so nervous. Mrs. Thorson is also very clear on the assignments so its no surprise.

Professor T is absolutely amazing. I'm in a "8 week" B1 course and we must complete the WHOLE workbook. She gives great advice and explains clearly what is expected for the speeches. I really enjoyed this class! I was terrified to take public speaking but she made it feel comfortable. She's hilarious and very honest. Definitely practice your speech ahead of time, it helps a ton and reduces PSA by a lot, like a lot. I would absolutely take another class with her, she's amazing. Kinda sad I chose the 8 week session

I did horrible on my first two presentations and the lowest grade she gave me was a C+ .If you can over come the anxiety and fear of presenting you will pass the class .Its up to you to get the passing grade make sure to Hit your time,do all your presentations and do your work book .

Thorson cares about her students, make sure you rehearse your speeches and don't miss class. She is a total rockstar I'd take her again in a heartbeat!

I loved her! She is a tough grader, but she gives great notes to learn from. We didn't use the book in class at all, but you use it to complete the workbook and online quizzes. She's a little batty and is terrible with technology, but she is a fantastic human.

Professor Thorson is a great speech teacher. She takes a little getting used to, however for people that hate public speaking she makes the class more manageable. I loved Thorson's public speaking course, and I generally don't like to publicly speak. You are given your speech grade right after each speech. There's a workbook due at toward the end of the semester - don't put it off until the night before. Constructive criticism/feedback is given from both Thorson and the rest of the class.

Quality teaching, comes with effort to listen and spill your guts out to the end! Expect to work for your grade, but gives intellectual feedback . She knows her stuff. Be on time to class, that's a given or else expect the worse ! She's phenomenal and caring. You will come out more confident in your self, and with your communication skills. :)

She is funny! She treats you like an adult and will expect you to act like one as well. She understands that her students are not expert speakers and keeps that in mind during your speech. Make sure you do your outline because she will be a bit harder on that.

Professor Thorson is funny and a great professor. She is very straight forward and old school, so if you can't do without your phone then don't take her class. She is very knowledgeable and gives interesting speeches. I really enjoyed her class and would recommend her to anyone.

Prof Thorson is mostly laid back in attitude, but not in grading written or online work, so do know she has responsibilities there and do your work as well as you can. She is not so strict in grading your speech, while she still gives plenty of good constructive criticism to let you know the mistakes you are making in your performance. Overall: A-

Best com teacher you could possible have. All of the assignments are clear from day 1. She is hilarious and brings her personality to the classroom and makes the class feel extremely comfortable. I have massive stage fright and this class was very intimidating to me but I would retake it with Mrs Thorson in a heartbeat. Definitely recommend!

All of the workbook and quizzes are to be done on your own time and are due about half way through the semester so its important to stay on track because they're time consuming, but you are given lots of time to prepare for your speeches which are majority of your grade. Fun and honest teacher, made public speaking less scary.

She is very opinionated, so if you don't like hearing stuff like that then reconsider. Very honest and hilarious! She gets off topic, but in relevance to important societal issues. No phones. She is very dignified, wise, and old schooled. I didn't do the work book, which dropped me down to a C so please do your work in this class. Overall amazing

I loved her! She is completely blunt, but still respectful. Reminds me of my grandma. Its public speaking, so yes you MUST attend to pass. The HW is just outlines of your speeches which are easy because she gives you one to copy the format and you just copy your textbook into the workbook word for word. Not hard, just time consuming.

I took this class in Fall 2020, and it was like any communication class. You have to do the workbook and quizzes, which there are many but not difficult. When it comes to lecturing, ask her to explain it in depth so you won't get confused, and contacting her outside of class is a chore so ask when you can. She is a good professor. :)

Prof. Thorson on was actually a really good teacher. She is very blunt and straight forward, which I actually prefer. She lets you know exactly what you did well and did bad. She sticks to her grading rubric so you should be able to tell exactly how you do in class. She also jokes around quite a bit and is easy going. Great class honestly.

Numerous textbook assignments, outlines, and speech presentations made up the entirety of this course. Nothing that is too difficult to grasp, and one of the things I really liked about this class was that Professor Thorson gave us the chance to have our speeches peer-reviewed, which was a big help. I would definitely recommend taking this course.

She expects you to practice the presentation so you do will when the day comes to present. She also helps you sometimes on how to make you presentation better by correcting some of your outline with the whole class.

Prof. Thorson is a friendly, accessible, and supportive professor who provides clear rubrics and plenty of time for revision. She is understanding of student nerves, offers the chance to redo speeches at the end of the semester, and even provides her phone number for emergencies. Highly recommended for public speaking. Great professor, I enjoyed her class very much. Attendance is important!

Professor Thorsons class was great, participation is important, and showing up to class is a must. 4 speeches, but she makes it easy to succeed if you follow along with her and is very happy to give you advice and help during class time. Its an easy pass if you actually put in the effort. I am honestly bummed she isn't teaching other comm classes.

This class is wonderful. Some times she goes on long winded rants but about informational topics, which shows off how she can give a speech on the fly. Homework is straight forward and speech days are intimidating but she does a good job making the feedback constructive.

Mrs. Thorson is an amazing professor, she give good feedback, and her grading a little tough, but if you follow her directions and pay attention in class, you will succeed.

Ms. Thorson is one of my favorite professors! She expects you to give college level work so be prepared, you are in college, afterall. She's funny, honest, caring, and cuts a little slack where needed, however she doesn't do excuses. Attendance and participation is mandatory. She made class fun.

Took this class over a 6 week summer course and It was amazing, her lectures really hooked me on. I would recommend her to everybody looking to take Public Speaking and looking for a class that is interesting. Its an easy class primarily graded on speeches. You will be assigned bookwork but all in all that is only about 10% of your entire grade.

She is very easy to talk to, i love her style of teaching. She can be very blunt but i am too so its ok. Gives a lot of workbook homework but its very easy. Two 4-5 min speeches, one 7-8 min speech, and one 9-10 min speech. 10 min speech was a peace of cake. She lets you chose your own topics.

Professor Thorson is a straight-forward, tansparent professor who gives you the tools needed to succeed in her class, while also keeping your attention during lectures. She cares about her students' success very much.

She was a good professor but she wasn't clear about her speech days and always changes or postpones speech days. She gives lot of homework to do, but gives enough time to finish the homework and speech writing, gives very good and clear feedback. She is also not strict about excuses, but not on speech days.

Mrs. Debra Thorson is a fantastic professor who loves hearing students' thoughts and actively joins in discussions. She is never mean or strict, creating a warm, caring classroom environment. On my last day, I was sad to leave a one-of-a-kind teacher. I recommend Mrs. Thorson; she provides comfort and truly helps students succeed.

Great class overall, she gave a lot of homework but with enough time to complete. Need to attend especially during speech days. Took a lot of time talking about topics not pertaining to public speaking..

Professor Debra was awesome, she is very relatable, humorous, engaging, and easy to talk to. Although we used the book she does a lot of lecturing with funny stories, pay attention. Make sure you show up to each class, participate in class, do the work and you shouldn't have a problem passing her class, I would take her again.

Professor Thorson is direct, but fair. While her teaching style isn't for everyone, she provides clear guidelines and is understanding of student nerves. Utilizing unstuck ai for speech prep can be a lifesaver in this class.

she is okay with her lectures but you have you pay attention to her and need to work hard on the speeches she does grade hard but gives great feedback.

I had a pretty good time taking this class, Thorson would often go off topic and then scramble to give us instructions before the class was over, but other than that she gave good feedback and good notes.

beware of professor Thorson, loves to talk, and her grading seems personal. she give me a 20 on attire and I was wearing a full suite and some guy was just wearing a T shirt and got a full grade on attire. don't get me wrong she is a grate professor but most of the time she doesn't follow the rubric. she speaks more about her life story's.

Professor Thorson was the worst teacher I have ever had. She barely talks about speeches and spends more time discussing her daughter who had surgery, but I don't care because I got a good grade. Overall, there were a lot of rude people in the class. Talk to you later. And love little boys.
