This woman is a very good teacher. I have not ever had a teacher that is so clear and so willing to work with the students. I would highly recommend her.
This class has a deceptive title it really was a semester long discussion of the gay marriage debate and other such topics not an examination of research that is implied in the course title. The class materials were vaugue and the instruction was 99% lecture. Class discussion was one sided. Papers and Quizes had to be submitted on WebCt.
Easy Class
Really stuborn on policy for IRFs and Assignments that must be submitted on WebCT. Can't understand that computers have bugs and glitches and if you are unlucky and your assignment get screwed with while you submit it on WebCT, she won't care and still give you a zero. Very one-sided with the majority of her topics on feminist views.
easy. but boring. 5 online assignments, EASY. 4 online IRF assignments, which deal with articles in the book. Class time is either focused on articles in the book or controversial issues that she wants to discuss. (the book is required if you want to pass) the final was a debate. the easiness of the assignment is based on what topic you get.
This class was easy. A bit boring at times. But still information was good. Uses WebCT. Confusing to figure out when assignments were due. Lots of extra credit.
Shes Great!! A lot of reading but it can be done. I loved the class. Great class discussions.
She is an alright prof. Because the class was a "critical thinking" class she is very tough in grading what is right and wrong! The IRF assigments are dull and borring. Lets just say if i would have taken her intro class i would have changed my major!
Very easy class. 2 out of 3 papers must be submitted approximately 3 pages. 3 quizzes of 50 multiple choice questions, right out of the book. Was sometimes boring to sit in for 3 hours, but overall very easy class not a lot of work.
She's very helpful and her class is very interesting. She has a unique way of teaching that helps you to remember the material. There isn't a whole lot of homework and the tests are very minimal. (only two!)
She is one of my favorite teachers of all time. Her class if fun and always interesting. It is an easier class but you still have to work for your grade!
She was very helpful. The only downside was that I had to sit there for 3 hours listening to her talk about sociology, but after a while I began to get and like it. If you have a choice get her, she's the best!!
good prof. attendance is mandatory. course can get quite boring but she really tries her best to keep it interesting. alot of work and you really need to work for your grade. Take her!
She is a good teacher, but will not cut you a break on attendence for any reason at all. Class is all about class discussions. There is no final. You have several IRF's to turn in two of which are worth 30pts a piece. The final project is a group debate.Absents count against you twice, in both attendence and class participation so do not miss class
Very organized and clear. Only two tests- both online, and no final. I would definitely recommend this class and professor.
Cool teacher! Easy class as long as you do the following: attend, participate in debates, quiz/papers...
As a junior I found this class very boring. It seemed as though I had to sit through a class that wasn't necessary at all. We did almost nothing in the beginning of the semester and then she piled on all of the work during the last 3 weeks. I participated my ass off and still didn't get full credit in that area Her tests are worded funny so beware
Welkley is an awesome professor. She cares about her students and their education. 2 Midterms ONLINE and final is a group debate...start early! She is strict on attendance but the class discussions are fun! Her tests are straight from lecture. Participate and your grade will improve! Extra credit offered through out semester!
Took her summer class for intro soc. There wasn't that much homework, if any (I don't remember). There were about 3 tests and two were online. The final was two papers. She graded them fairly. The class got boring at times, but that's because it was three hours long. Overall it was a pretty easy class.
She seems tough in the beginning, but warms up and becomes very helpful, funny, and caring. Boring at times, but that's if students don't participate. Easy, but confusing at times test/quiz questions. I liked her. Would recommend.
professor was helpful. the class was very interesting, but if your not a morning person don't take this class in the morning shes strict about attendance and participation.
Her class is fun and easy!!!! The professor is easy to talk to and the class is not as boring as it sounds. the books is very useful and the IRF's are a lot easier than they seem. she offers a lot of extra credit/
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. She is one of my favorites, she's really funny, and she is an excellent professor. There are no tests and the IRF's are really easy and she offers a lot of extra credit. The class was really fun and I highly recommend the class
She knows her stuff (literally wrote the book), and knows how to communicate this to her students. You will get a lot from her as a professor. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed this class. The professor is really nice and helpful and she asks for any questions before moving on. She takes attendance and doesn't allow cell phones. But overall, I would recommend this class. You learn from it and she is a great professor.
Great professor. Happy and friendly. Homework was every week, but easy to do. Enjoyed this class. Lots of extra credit available.
Welkley is an awesome professor, she gives tons of extra credit, online open book quizzes and interesting lectures. She also has presenters come in to talk about various topics. There is a group project in her class but it doesn't take much to fulfill this requirement. Highly recommend!
Recommend taking!!! No tests or quizzes! Just busy work throughout the semester that isn't too hard, just takes an hour or two to complete. Huge group project, but nothing too difficult. Offers a lot of extra credit!! Class is fun with a discussion style as oppose to pure lectures. Honestly one of the best teachers ever!!
This course emphasized the importance of critical thinking, finding fallacies in arguments, various research methods, etc. I enjoyed the small class size and class discussions. Professor Welkley is very helpful and encourages you to learn from mistakes. I was challenged to look at arguments from an opposing prospective. Recommended!
This Professor is intelligent in teaching this class, if you want some stress off EXAMS, take her because this class requires NO EXAMS at all. Just in-class writing assignments & group presentation (which is technically your finals but not on finals week). As long as you TRY in this class, you'll pass it easily.
no exams, just quizzes every two weeks on text and a group presentation at the end of the semester. attendance is mandatory. this class was easy and she was a really nice. take her class, definitely recommended
Class is similar structure to high school- points for attendance and participation. This class is strange, I just finished it and did not learn anything new. Easy to get a B on assignments but hard to get an A. Nice person but her class is pointless.
Dr. Welkley is the most organized and concise professor I've ever had. This class wasn't "weird". Anyone who thinks it was boring or bad class, you were probably a slacker.I got an A on all assignments but 1. You have to complete the assignments thoroughly to get an A. IT'S COLLEGE PEOPLE!!! The Professor was helpful and respectful.
She teaches like we are in high school. Takes roll every class, which makes it feel like you are a high school student. Easy class, two online exams, but they aren't really based off notes. They are based off reading the book. Her lectures are so boring. She may not let you use a laptop, it depends on how she feels. Would not take again!!!
Easy class if you do all the work and get a good grade on them. Requires a lot of reading. Complete the CT Journals and class assignments. 1 Essay! Attendance is mandatory. She marks off points after the first one. No final! Just a group presentation (you pick your own) I didn't enjoy this class because it was boring to me, but it was fairly easy.
Easy class. 2 papers & 2 online tests (3 hrs & all answers are in the book). Learned a "few" things. You are responsible for the work bc she won't remind you what is due. Everything is usually due towards the end of the semester. EASY CLASS, but group projects sucked.
I've taken two classes with her (SOC 8 & SOC 3), amazing Professor. Really takes an interest in the students and what they learn. You can really tell she wants to see us succeed. Her lectures are interesting; she is very passionate about what she is teaching. If I could I would take another class with her. Ps. She enjoys class participation.
EASY class!! Professor Welkley is AMAZING :) I learned a lot, and this class was never boring. There's also a big group project towards the end of the semester, but it's REALLY EASY. If you do well on the paper, assignments & the presentation, there's no reason why you can't do well in the class. NO MIDTERM OR FINAL! TAKE HER!!!
GREAT professor! Passionate and knowledgeable. A few critical thinking journals, in-class activities, and a group date project. NO TESTSQUIZZES. Do all the work as she asks, don't miss class, and you'll get an A. Very happy to have taken her class :) For her book, search "critical and creative thinking by debra l. welkley" on Amazon!
Professor Welkley was cool, she is kind towards her students and does take the time to get to know them. There are short writing assignments that's go along with readings that are easy points. However, there is a huge debate halfway through the semester and it can be a lot of work. Do well on that and you will pass.
This class was alright. Only one big group debate which is the final, it's tough to meet up with groups outside of class. Choose members wisely. No tests in this course. She takes attendance otherwise I wouldn't even go! You don't do much.
Professor Welkley is great! Her course was engaging and interesting, that's really what makes the course "easy." I would recommend her to anyone who is a Sociology major or not. You can always go to her for help, in fact this semester I ran into her in the hall & we had a good conversation and she invited me to come her her office anytime for help!
HATED GOING TO THIS CLASS.
Very liberal. Assigns many overlapping papers and projects. If you take this class, expect to be busy. Exams are all online and questions are straight from the book.
she is always asking students to expand their thoughts and their opinions. She is constantly challenging your statements and opinions... what it boils down to is she is a critical thinking and she is trying to instill the same thought process in her students. She was always available and hard work pays off in her class.
She's really sweet. Her lectures are interesting. All tests are online. One group project. She's willing to help you out with anything you need. She really tries to get to know her students and their names. I really enjoyed her class.
I absolutely enjoyed Professor Welkeley's Sociology class. It was recommended to me by a previous student and I'm glad I was able to take this class, she's an amazing professor and as long as you do your work, you will pass! Easy A!
She is so boring. I hate going to her class, she always make you feel stupid for the questions you ask. Everything is graded on Sacct, absolutely hated her.
She is very nice and you can tell she knows what she is doing. There are no tests or quizzes, but she takes attendance everyday for credit. The extra credit is easy and make sure you keep up with the assignments due. Our final is a debate presentation with a group that you work on pretty much the whole semester.
Overall was an OK class. She is very liberal. Every time I would ask her a question she would not even answer it but rather asked me to answer my own question.. Her lectures were very bland and honestly put me to sleep. Even though she was very boring and liberal we had no quizzes and 1 final at the end of the semester and 6 journal entries.
She makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. There is a lot of reading and writing to do in that class, but no test or quizzes. The final is a group presentation. The extra credit saved my grade. It is easy to get a B in this class, hard to get an A.
Debra is an amazing Professor! She doesn't give any tests, all you have do is write self based assessments (3 in total). The biggest assignments were the group debate and critical thinking paper! Honestly do your work, COME TO CLASS, complete everything on time, and participate in class and you will get an A.
She has been my favorite sociology professor so far. She does use an online textbook which I didn't really like but her classes are interesting. All quizzes, exams, and assignments are online. She takes attendance and there is a group project at the end of the semester.
This class wasn't too bad, it wasn't academically hard, it just requires a lot of effort. She won't announce when something is due so you have to constantly keep checking sacct for due dates. There's no final, instead there's a big group project. all exams/quizzes are online. Her lectures are boring and long & attendance is mandatory.
I love Prof. Welkley. She was an amazing professor. Her class was super easy. Quizzes, tests and homework is all online. Tests and quizzes were beyond easy if you completed your weekly homework. There is an Annotated Bibliography, which is really easy as well. One group project that was pretty cool too!
Class was simple reading and paragraph reflections on the readings. No midterm. Our final was a group project that wasn't hard. Class was simple. Counts participation and attendance against your grade though.
Well.... you have two groups, one for the debate (the final) & one for the collaborative group work in Blackboard. There are weekly articles to respond to in the discussion. Then there is a 4 p. paper where you have to utilize the book. She is a very specific grader
There are no quizzes or exams. Make sure you keep up with all of the assignments. She doesn't really remind you of when they are due, so check regularly. She gives a lot of extra credit so look out for those. Big debate/presentation at the end, so do well.
I thought out of all my classes, I was going to fail this one. Turns out, i got the best grade in this class. Our final was a debate, my group was not prepared and BS it but ended up getting a B on it. I did not put in much effort in this class at all.
Welky is a very specific grader. Grades will be like 6.75 or something like that. She is a very caring and nice person, however I think her grading is much too tough. One big 4-5 page paper and a group "debate" is the bulk of the class. Overall, would not take again because of how she grades things. Rarely gives 100% on anything.
Prof. Welkley is amazing! A connect assignment for each chapter online, a few online quizzes and 2 exams online through Connect, no final. The book is not necessary to purchase. There is an annotated bib that's time consuming, but not hard. The final is a group presentation the last two weeks of class. Easy grader! A must take for an easy A.
Professor Welkey is a fantastic professor. The majority of the assignments are online, as well as assessments. However, there is a group project at the end, which can be extremely stressful if you have a terrible group. I'd take this class again if I could!
Dr. Welkley is a nice person but her class isn't very interesting. I didn't really learn anything new. There weren't any tests , just journal entries and reading. Honestly, I'd rather have had a huge final exam instead of the debate presentation, which turned out to be a huge headache. I did enjoy the class discussions we had though.
While you are taking this class, it will seem as the material presented is not relevant or even boring. Once the class was over I can see that this material has made me a way better student or critical thinker in all my classes even when I'm not a sociology major. She gives really good honest feedback.
No. Just don't. There are other options, take those not this. Everyone I talk to in this class has been super confused and annoyed the entire semester. Thinks very highly of herself which gets really annoying.
She is a really tough grader and decides to make up assignments randomly. Online discussions and journals are very time consuming. Debate presentation takes a lot of research because she's very picky. Does not lecture because she assigns articles from her textbook. She clearly has favorites in the class and is more lenient with them.
Debra is an amazing professor. She cares about what her students have to say and created a safe space in her classroom. There is one group project presentation at the end of the semester but it is super easy. Most of the other assignments are online and easy.
Nice lady. All the work she assigns is online. There's 4 quizzes and 2 exams based off the online assessments. She gave a few extra credit opportunities. 90% are lectures, that she makes interesting and occasionally she'll bring in guest speakers who are very insightful.
Debra is a very interesting professor. At first, she seems quite nice and her class seems manageable. The disappointing part about her is she is a tough grader but does not give you guidelines on how hard she will grade. Everybody was confused the whole semester, she is condescending and overall makes it obvious when she doesn't like someone. No.
Professor Welkley is hit or miss. She is great most of the time, but a lot of small things added up. It is easy to get a good grade, but she did not give a lot of direction on projects and assignments. Besides that, she was a great professor. I just wouldn't take her again because I am not a sociology major.
I've taken this teacher twice, for two separate courses and i love her. Great personality, amazing lectures. She's the second best sociology professor i've had. Participate of she will call you out and she typically has one group project as the "final"
This professor is very unclear and rarely responds to emails. I emailed her Tuesday morning and twice Wednesday evening about an assignment due Wednesday night and she responded Thursday morning and offered little to no help. Honestly, this class would probably be an easy A if it were in-person, but it's 100% online and its asynchronous.
I took this class for fun and I regret it bc it dropped my gpa. It was asynchronous but she didn't record any lectures at all so we had to learn just by reading the book. With that method, I felt like I didn't learn much. There were a couple of large assignments/projects that weren't too bad. The weekly online assignments/quizzes were easy.
I had Debra for SOC8. Would not recommend taking this class if it is a GE requirement. Her feedback never makes sense and she is very particular about how she wants things without providing examples. The only upside about her class is the extra credit she gives out. No exams or quizzes, but one group project you work on throughout the year.
I took this class completely online, there were a lot of discussion posts and she isn't very approachable. She was okay for a soc course, she did teach me a lot via online.
Dont take this class for GED. She doesnt give clear instructions nor feedback. You will have to do a group project with people that you might not know for almost the entire semester. You will have to record your presentation with your classmates and post it as a discussion post. You will also write 6 Journals, but they are pretty easy.
This is overall an easy class. The main issue is your grade. At the end of the semester you won't know your grade because even if you check canvas for your percentage grade it is not accurate. She tells you to go calculate the assignments yourself. Not just that but some of the assignments are even labeled correctly. Use this info as you please. GL
It was an asychronous class, very straight forward, we used McGraw Hill for the class and had 3 discussions and 2 exams and 1 presentation. Easiest class but make sure to stay on top of the due dates and write an initial post for the discussions on time.
I enjoyed taking Debra's class. She was very straightforward. You MUST read the book. She wrote it herself along with her colleagues so she will know if you didn't read it. The hardest part of the course was the debate you have at the end, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world. I recommend taking her class if you're down to work for the grade.
Seems nice but so much work to do for a GE class. Literally a basic sociology class but grades like it's an upper division class. Asynchronous with weekly reading/responses. Not worth taking too much work. Group project/presentation with so many specifications and tough grading. Don't take her unless you really like sociology.
Weekly readings 2-3 articles, weekly journals, weekly peer review, discussion posts, and a group project throughout the semester (the final). No quizzes, test or exams. This class makes you work for your grade, but it made me hate myself instead. So yeah, if you have discipline, take it. If you dont, you can still take it but can be harder.
She is a caring teacher whom tries to help however she can. Personally, sociology was difficult, but as a class itself was average difficulty and can comprehend it to an extent. Does take more time in doing assignments than usual though. Her grading is a little bit on the more rougher side, but still fair. Easy to access materials outside class.
My 3 upper division soc courses combined were less difficult than her lower division class. Grading is confusing and inconsistent. If you need to improve your critical thinking skills, take her class and GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Otherwise don't take this class as a GE unless you have 20 hours a week to kill on weekly assignments + a huge group project.
Even though her class is a little bit on the difficult side, she helped out in any way possible form that you needed and loves what she does! As long as you keep up with all her work and really go in detail with all the journal entries and other assignments I promise you will do great in her class. Overall I really love how she teaches.
Super responsive & encourages students to reach out to her or student coach. The class is a little difficult & is time-demanding at first but the workload lightens up because of a group project. The textbook is included with the course & she also offers extra credit. Soc majors should take her 193A to make a connection with her & get extra help.
Her grading is tough to say the least. Frustrating to spend an hour on each weekly discussion assignment only to rarely get full credit. I actually received a 9.2/10 on one of these. That's crazy. She does, however, make herself available for questions and posts thorough lectures. Still not worth it. Grading so harsh makes me stop trying.
For Journals, read the article. Answer the question from the book and relate it to an example you've experienced or seen. Most people struggled in that part, and so did I at one point. Once I did that, it went from a 4/10 to 9/10. I got points taken off because I'd always submit it late. The assignments are for your final, so do them when do.
Don't, just don't. Awful professor, awful UI in her modules, mandatory textbook readings, asynchronous class? You'd think she knows what that means, but she would assign a group project (???). Labels everything AI, even if you spend a good hour on the paper, and EVEN if it gets a green light, 60-70% rating. I don't think I've ever gotten a 10/10.
She teach like she's not teaching, unclear instruction and without knowing where to find direction on modules.
