Repeated herself a lot
Horrible. She teachers a course on communication but needs one herself.
course is so damn easy

don't go ever.. excruciating
pefect time to sleep..
Easy as hell course, not too bad on the eyes. Good time to sleep, or do homework
english for engineers = (very anal prof) + (very boring class) --> skip alot

Take your top off!
BORING!!!!
damn sexy... but really if u must go to class bring a pillow
i'd she's good lookin... cna't really say anythin else. Dont read the text book... and those slides are COPYWRIGHTED! god forbid we get our hands on those..
YOUNG BUT NOT HOT! She TRIES to make technical english interesting for engineers.... stop trying! Find a good TA like McGill.

She was very helpful and very approachable. Probably the best prof I had this year.
Most boring class I've ever attended. Had to pry my eyes open in order to stay awake and absorb the material. Though, I wouldn't say that it's her fault that this course is so damn boring.
CLASS IS BORING & USELESS.

**** but boring
Very boring (mandatory) course. I think I attended like 3 lectures ... Anyhow, I think she's very good looking but she seems shy.
genuinely cares for students...great prof!
It's not the teachers fault I hate this course... I just hate english courses in general. She seems like a nice prof, but english is evil in my eyes. If you like english, she'd probably be a good prof to have.
Very approachable prof who knows her material, and knows how to teach it too. :)
This prof is 100% useless. She just keeps repeating herself and uses all the bad presentation gestures you're supposed to be taught to avoid in English class. Don't go to her lectures - better to stare aimlessly at the sky than to listen to her nonsense.
They teach you how to throw paper airplanes in class.
At first i didnt find the class useful, but then she began teaching on how to write memos. I feel that this is very important and useful material that we will need to know in the future.. she did a great job teaching the work.. i didnt have to read text.
nice prof, actually cares about her job, but the course material is boring as hell, they think engineers have no english skills whatsoever...!!
Boring material. She tries her best to get the students interest in the material (paper airplanes) and will go out of her way to help students (lab reports)
Very sensitive
Willing to provide individual assistance to students who desire it. Overall an effective professor.
The class itself is the most worthless class ever. Its almost insulting. And the TA's suck, yet they're the ones grading you.
very helpful prof and very approachable
Helps improve English as evidenced by what I write now here

A Very helpful Prof. for anyone who finds themselves very "scattered" in their writings. An all around great English professor! Thanks Prof. Flynn
She's a very scattered lady. Sometimes, I just want to tell her to BREATHE. But overall, the class is an easy A!
I think she is a good teacher. People take her for granted. I think she is always in a hurry because she gets to class late and tries to catch up but she still manages to have some fun, especially the paper airplane contest. Keep up the great work!
SHE CARES!!! ENGLISH IS EASY AND FUN!!! I think we need more english training as engineers, we can't even argue on the course bullitin without resorting to threats and personal insults. SHE IS HOT (MUAHAHAHAHAHA)!! ENGLISH IS MY FAVOURATE SUBJECT
I'm not sure why people have been such jerks to her in the past- Maybe I'm biased, being a writer in my spare time, but seriously- She's better and cares more than most all of our other profs. If you hate English, that's your own problem.
I hope she has tears of joy after reading all the good comments for her. She basically told us in hidden messages to come here, and rate her. Flynn, Screw the faculty and give us a Higher Average than you are supposed to.
She talked down to the class throughout the whole course. I learned nothing new, having known how to write an email. You feel like you are getting colser to death each minute in that class. An easy mark.
She needs to cheer up, she wasn't very happy when she taught our engineering English class.
Boring course!
Makes you want to learn to impress her. Looking at her pretty face makes class worth every minute. My one and only sweetheart.
It is obvious she cares, doesnt stand up for herself when the class gets too rowdy....shes too nice. Gotta love her though.
****ing worse course ever, waste of time. Should stop trying to teach engineers about english.
Great prof, who cares about her students !!!
great lady.

I give her points for trying, but yeah...its hard to teach english.
Good god. Worst Prof ever. Horrible course to boot. She cannot properly form a correct sentence without two minutes of prior thought. She teaches a communications course but desparately needs one herself. Horrible!
I think this teacher is one of the best english teachers that I've ever met. She is very caring once you get to know her. She is always willing to bargain deadlines and she wants her students to do well. Being in her class made me like writing.
No idea why everyone gives her such a hard time.
She likes to spend 15-20 mins each class chichating with students, and tends to lose track of the time very easily. She writes disorganized notes too. However, she is really a caring prof and quite a lenient marker. Trust me, you'll love her...especially her lovely face and voice. She is soo hot.

Tough prof, but then again I'm a science student and I don't have to write much.

Prof. Flynn, would you please give up teaching this course?!I barely recall her finishing a sentence-at least one that makes sense- during her lectures, need I say more?
English PhD, I don't think so. Learn to speak. Teachers like Kang, God forbid, can speak and teach better than she can. Can't form proper sentences, but at the same time, teaching us how to communicate. Let's just say there's a lot of "noise" between her and the audience. A big disappointment.

I agree with previous posts that she definely has to take ENG182: she talks like a robot which cannot make up a complete sentence. The whole English course is a stupid course because nothing there makes sense, just a formalism.
The course is a waste of time. The teacher is not bad though. You yourself try to explain something like the stuff she teaches. The good news is that ENG182 isn't mandatory anymore. Me feels good knowing that the next generation of engineers won't feel sorry for the wasted time as me does.
Unlike other ENG100 classes that are a seminar format, my class was lecture+tutorial format. Prof Flynn honestly wants students to do well & will spend a lot of time helping students. Unfortunately, she also spends way too much time answering questions, so she easily losses track of time. Assigned readings are unnecessary if you listen in class.
English teaching is ok, but deep-down she despises engineers. Sometimes starts talking complete nonsense ("Very little people here today. You must have a CALCULUS exam or something"). Irritating.
Just from reading some of the comments on this site, it's completely evident why ENG182 should've stayed mandatory. She can't speak in complete sentences? Most people here can't even write full sentences in a comprehensible manner. While Prof. Flynn may not have been the best lecturer, she at least showed an effort to help us.
she is a fair teacher and did everything she said she would (making sure we'd get the highest mark possible)
I had a fairly good impression of this professor. She is very helpful if you speak to her one-on-one after class -- those talks can seriously raise the marks of your essays! Classes are admittedly pretty boring, but I still thought that this was a good university introductory course.
I highly recommend Prof.Flynns course to any undergrad. It teaches you to write! Prof is extremely helpful and even gets to know students of a first name basis. Even if you're not an English major (I'm going into nursing) this course is a must!
great prof, one of the best I had during my time at uoft
Decent teacher and she cared about helping us. This was her first time teaching as a class of 200 almost, may explain some lack of feedback. Overall a nice woman, talks in short fragments, but its because she seems to be composing her thoughts. The class was alot of work, and the book was absolutely useless. She was cool though.
I loved professor Flynn. She was so nice, helpful and very approachable. Her lectures are very interesting and her organization is unparalleled. Her tests and essays are very fair. One of my favourite profs at U of T by far.
Great professor. Engaging, enthusiastic, and a quirky sense of humor. She's very approachable and encouraging. Lectures are bit dry sometimes, but not always her fault. Take her in your undergrad, you won't regret it.
When it comes to teaching Modern Literature, she is perfect. One of my favorite profs. from U. of T., and one of the most helpful courses in understanding how to read, analyze and approach literature. An incredibly efficient, fair and capable teacher.
Prof. Flynn is such an amazing lecturer. She's engaging, knows her subject so well, and really wants her students to learn, understand, and become interested in the material. I took ENG214 with her in first term and liked it enough to also take ENG213 in second term. I'd definitely recommend her. The marking's not hard either!
She's boring and talks in short fragments. It's hard to follow and going to class is a chore. ENG 100 is the bane of my life. *kill me now* OH and I'm in class right now.
Solid reading list. Gives interesting modernist interpretations. Easy to get a high grade. Genuinely nice individual as well.
Not the best english prof I have had. Attendance is MANDATORY because she will be handing out in class assignments. She doesn't really teach anything new about writing. It was more of a current events class. Essays are somewhat challenging. You need to do research, drafts, etc. Lectures are quite boring, played games on my iPod. Overall, easy class
boring, going to class only for the in class work. Otherwise you learn nothing from this course. Also, the essays are absolutely irrelevant and boring. Don't take this class
Good but not what I expected in the class. Sometimes very off topic and not the kind of writing I wanted.
Brilliant slow readings of all the topics and works we covered. She's a hell of a professor with a huge capacity for caring about her students.
She sometimes goes off topic, but is very helpful and cares a lot about her students. She will take time outside of class to clarify anything. I found that the fill-in the blank-type questions on the exams were very difficult and unneeded.
Really thorough, helpful Prof. Lectures sometimes feel a little slow, but only because Prof. Flynn tries to ensure everyone understands the material, and is benefitting from the content. She really seems to care that students do well, and happily interacts/helps with anything.
One of the best professors I have ever met.
Although it is mandatory to attend in order to get in class papers, she is great with providing instructions for completing work outside of lectures. Also gives helpful feedback in order to improve. Lectures over all are long but still helpful and and interesting, plus shes got a great sense of humour.
Well spoken, interesting lectures. However easy her outline sheets make her tests appear to be, don't slack. Short answer sections can get very specific. Even if it says the q's will only focus on plot, get familiar with the films + discussion topics from lectures. The course can be enjoyable, but don't take it lightly.
- Smart; does not know how to Teach - Instructions were never clear, clarification didnt help -Often asked TERTIARY high-mark value questions rewarding random specific syntax-memorization and not actual knowledge. Ridiculous questions. -Will tell you how many sentences to write in answer. E.g. a straight-forward question will require 4 sentences
She genuinely cares about the students and ensures that instructions are clearly posted on blackboard. She was even nice enough to let us go early when we had a midterm for another course later that day. I would love to have another class with her
Smart prof, great sense of humour but doesn't know how to teach or organize her lectures properly. You never really know what's going on with her lectures. Talks a lot about how to do it rather than what to do, instructions are never clear. Goes into detail about something and doesn't cover what that something is for. won't recommend
She's really dmart and if you read instructions carefully, there's no need to attend class. BUT she is horrible at replying to emails. Missed the lecture before the essay was due for a legitimate reason and never replied.
I am a bit impartial, as I had a highly great experience with Professor Flynn. I went to practically every office hours she had, and she worked a great deal with me on my paper. She has an unbelievable ability to articulate the English language, and it was a pleasure to work with her. She also provided me with a great reference letter upon exit.
She's nice and all but her lectures are a bit philosophical. For this course, I kinda felt lost most of the time because her lectures are a bit straying from the readings that we had to do. Lots of writing but she's a fair grader.
Disorganized in lecture, never had a clear focus for lectures, and often got sidetracked.
One thing I really disliked about her was that she was so unorganized and sometimes she would go off about random things that are not even relevant to the course. The material is however interesting though, and she does mark fairly.
Very passionate about the course, but not at all organized in her lectures. Often begins talking about unrelated subjects, and assignments are unclear or weirdly worded. Must attend class to get graded for in class work.
No one can understand what she saying
Her analogies don't make the slightest bit of sense.
She comes to class disorganized. But, she's funny and caring. Instructions are unclear.
Deirdre Flynn greatly emphasizes the importance of critical writing and its applications to my other courses. Without her expectations and criterias, I wouldn't have succeeded efficiently throughout my university studies. Thanks for the preparation that this professor has helped me guide to build a stepping stone to my future writing career.
Subject matter expert--no argument. Teaching skills--poor. Lectures go off on tangents, instructions seem to be for other things half the time. Also, consistently late for class (she emails to tell us the start time and then arrives 15-20 minutes after her own time). Doesn't seem to encourage in-class participation.
Dr Flynn tries to make this intro writing class interesting through the analogy of video games. Her lectures are relatively dry as they are reiterations of the course pack. However, it is easy to get marks so long as you put in the effort into all the graded in class activities and the assignment (2 essay). Final exam was very structured, no essay.
Prof. Flynn is very disorganized and makes concepts and assignments way more complicated than they need to be. I did not enjoy her class and she did not enjoy teaching it because of the big class size. That being said, for some reason I really liked her as a person and when talking one on one, was really helpful. I learned a lot despite everything.
The class was good, the prof not so much. I don't usually like to say these things, but it is what it is. She's very disorganized, you ask a question and her response ends up confusing you and creating more questions rather than giving a straight answer; her guidelines are all over the place. But that being said, I did enjoy the movies she showed.
Her course has changed the way I write. I'm deadass going to write a novel bc of this course.
Super nice prof! Weekly assignment, two/three papers, no final this term. TA will grade 40-50 papers per week, so get ready to write grade appeals. No need to attend lectures.
Uninspiring. The course is structured in a way that does not make a lot of sense. The kind of things the course wants to teach, they are not actually very useful. If you want to take in for BR you could, its an easy A if you keep up with the lectures - they are dreadful. I would suggest taking up a seminar course instead to fulfill the BR honestly.
Super nice. Very understanding and accommodating, especially during COVID times. Just follow her rubrics, skim through some of the lectures, and put in the work for the essays and you're good. Didn't learn much from her, honestly.
She is really kind but the course was poorly organized at times. Overall, it was fairly easy and there was a lot of room to get free marks. Your mark may depend on your TA too sometimes. Readings were kind of hard to follow, but assignments has clear rubrics for the most part. Lots of small assignments here and there, but be prepared to write!
Emailed her a few times with genuine concerns but never heard back from her. Otherwise, lectures were okay. She discussed exercise sets in class each week which helped. The course was decently disorganized, the assignments were barely ever explained properly. Everyone was always confused about what was expected of us and the feedback was vague.
my fav prof so far. she's a bit disorganized, but I dont rlly think our marks suffer cuz of it (if anything, she gives us extra time/extra leniency when something goes wrong on her part). she doesn't care if you hand things in late, and the process writing assignments literally build up to our bigger essays, so everything we work on is helpful. <3
Lecture course are a lot to keep up with especially if your taking other courses it’s very chaotic and too much. I saw the reviews prior to taking this course and tried my best to keep up with the set work and lectures but fell behind. As there’s too much going on. a lot of the dates are incorrect on documents for deadlines just very confusing.
Huge amounts of unnecessary and complicated explanations of exercises and steps in the writing process which you would expect an effective writing teacher to avoid. When students attempt to ask questions she would not provide adequate or related answers, often distracted during lectures by editing and changing course documents while presenting.
Never understood why people complain so much about this course. Sure, prof is disorganized, but she offers lots of extra credit opportunities, literally does the homework with students after the lecture, and is super nice. All the assignments/ exercise sets built up on each other, easy marks, never took me more than 30 mins to do. Bird course tbh
Professor Flynn has a textbook that she reads, basically word-for-word, from. While the concepts aren't necessarily mind-blowing or hard to grasp, they do make the weekly (FOR MARKS) homework tedious as all hell. The writing of the textbook is also unnecessarily convoluted, with it overall feeling like a waste of time.
The course material itself was interesting; however, the professor teaching the class was completely disorganized and messy. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the class because the material was interesting.
Literally, assignment descriptions are vague and you have to through her disorganized files to find what an assignment is scrolling through hundreds of pages all to see what you even have to do. Feel bad for people who need this for their major.
It is a struggle to even find what you need to do for assignments as she uses her own convoluted notebook files INSTEAD OF POSTING IT ON THE ASSIGNMENT PAGE. She states stuff is worth completion but takes off marks if something isn't perfect. This class is people view English classes, using big fancy words and making writing English a chore.
Interesting course and I learned a lot from this prof. My TA gave detailed feedbacks. Office hours with TAs and Prof are both super helpful-- they basically help you structure! Sometimes going through the lectures, weekly sets, process writings, Quercus posts are a bit tedious, but I mean they are easy marks! Nice and informative prof overall!
Course content is great. However, throughout the whole lecture it feels like you're being talked at; it feels unbareable and draining for 3 hours. The prof also speaks quite monotone, making it difficult to follow and remain attentive.
Everything is SO confusing. As a STEM student who chose to take this course to hone my writing skills; the entire course is all over the place. She only references her "textbook" which is a billion pages. Her lectures don't make any sense either and I find myself just rewatching the lectures instead (as they're recorded). Overall, terrible prof.
I liked her course.
disorganized: - change textbook right before lecture - textbook is confusing and all over the place. I like how she guides us thru it and does the exercises with us. - her schedule is confusing. An ex is the schedule says when she post the assignment but not when it's due. still not changed - left winged (good for me but not for some ppl lol)
The class was extremely disorganized, and professor Flynn really didn't do much actual teaching. It's all just process assignments that are copy-pasted from previous years, and are graded against unclear rubrics. The "textbook" is just a word file that is a large block of text that doesn't do much except try to explain the assignments. Don't take.
The textbook is a Google doc, she is entirely disorganized, and it is tough to follow the lecture due to its long duration of 3 hours. Most of the time, she's not teaching anything, just reading random texts and giving her opinions. Assignments are not clear and rubrics are vague. In sum, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
This course is a nightmare you can't escape from for 12 weeks, and based on how far back these comments go, it's clear she doesn't care. Only take ENG100 with Flynn if you absolutely have to - you'll thank yourself later. If you must, keep Advil on hand because you'll need it while trying to read through her confusing textbook and slides.
Professor keeps fixing her slides in the middle of the lecture (disorganized) Professor excessively repeats “do not use ChatGPT” (and I MEAN EXCESSIVE) Professors and TAs both avoid "complicated" emails involving justification for grades or rescheduling meetings.
Seems preoccupied much of the time, and grading rubrics are inconsistent/unclear. She can be hard to get ahold of. She teaches from a self-published textbook and still does a bad job of adapting her teaching materials cause she reuses slides from previous classes and doesn't update them. Passionate about her subject, but not a great teacher.
The professor is alright, but the course and lectures were very dull and she had extremely narrow views on things. There wasn't any room for creativity in the essays at all. At the beginning of the course, she recommended us to print out her course book and take notes on it, so I did, and a lecture later she CHANGES THE BOOK?!? What a waste.
Very disorganized, hard to get ahold of. Lectures are sooo boring. TAs never respond to emails from the beginning of the semester. Had a final essay due, and never received the outline grades or feedback, but other students did? TAs were useless, and the professor also did not make any accommodations or extensions.
This prof is on a power trip. She ignores my emails and my accessibility advisor's emails about extensions, telling me there are "too many students with needs to keep up?? She doesn't respond to emails, the grading is inconsistent, and students don't receive feedback if they use extensions. This is the most frustrating class I've ever taken.
Just. Don't.
- disorganized - didn't put instructions in "essay 1 assignment table" - narrow view of grading - horrible feedback as they are SO broad - teacher and TA not helpful I KNOW ENGLISH IS A BIRDY COURSE BUT IF YOU TAKE IT WITH HER, RUN! I MEAN IT! DON'T TAKE IT!
Excessive "don't use chatgpt" statements. TA basically useless except Katherine (head TA). Prof avoids emails. Never went to lectures but managed to get an A. Watched a recording when I was finishing the ES assignments. take it if u want free grades but prof pmo so much.
1. course load heavy 2. The professor is disorganized and has a narrow view on a lot of stuff 3. She swore next year's midterms and finals are offline 4. Lectures are boring and monotone 5. The topic stays the same for the rest of the semester, never changes 6. TAs aren't helpful either Not worth it for an elective, take other classes
just no, straight up don't ever take a class with her
I appreciate what she's trying to teach us (it's important/useful), but tangents and disorganization make class difficult to follow. Acknowledges her students are mostly STEM with crazy workloads... refuses any extensions. Instead of teaching how to use AI responsibly as a learning tool, she excessively forbids it and denies it any good to learning
