Mr. Dechant is a great teacher, plus he's good for a few laughs. It may seem like he's demanding a lot,but that's only if you're lazy. He's easy to talk to and his TA's are cool too, expect a quiz at least once as well as prep cards
very funny and enthusiastic. loved this course!
Really fun and interesting class with great TA's.
opens your eyes to how others think. very interesting class, and dechant is one hell of a raquetball player.
I never missed one of his classes. they were very interesting.
Very informative and funny. Great man!
CRAZY HARD!! TOO MUCH WORK!! Get out now, while you still can!!
Very helpuful instructor. Great scholar. Always willing to facilitate the learning process. Great outlook on life, loves his job and it shows.
Dell deChant is an extremely interesting and funny professor to listen to. He makes every class interesting. The only downfall is the required oral presentation by every student which ends up taking away from deChant's wonderful lectures. Very respectful.
The class is pretty tough and time consuming but Mr. DeChant definitely makes it worth while. He has a great personality and is awesome because he tries to get to know everyone's name (200+ ppl). halarious and speaks in a language we can understand
Gives wonderful thurough lectures.
Wonderful professor! This class very insightful and I certainly learned a lot! I would take any of his classes!! Great GTA too!
I love this man. He is so passionate about his work and it definately shows. He is very smart and I learned so much from his class.
Amazing teacher. The best I have had in my college career. Very intelligent and helpful. Consists of 5 750 word essays and 1 3000 word final paper. Quizes before and after each chapter as well. Do the reading and you'll be fine. Cannot BS this class though.
Simply the best teacher.
the best teacher!he is so passionate about what he teacher and makes u wanna come to class and learn things.he cares about each student and it shows.he's a great teacher and advisor. this is an awesome class and if you get the chance to have Mr.deChant as your professor, take it, you wont regret it
Expect to work ALOT. Write 7 750 word papers, takes attendence every class. 2 Points deducted for every absence. Quizes almost every class. AlOT of Work!!
he is so awesome... i loved his class... alot of reading two and the two points attendance thing i didnt like.... but he still awesome
Very Very difficult class tons of quizzes and papers.
Mr. DeChant has an obvious passion for his subject and is an incredible speaker. However the class is conducted in a rather juvenile manner (reading out loud, answering obvious questions for participation points). If you can handle this, it is wealth of knowledge and DeChant will not dissappoint.
He is a very good teacher. I strongly suggest you take one of his classes. Although he makes you write a lot of papers, he helps you with ideas and gives lots of examples. He gives quizzes like evry other class but they are really easy and i never read the book. GREAT TEACHER!!!
He is a good teacher once you get used to his interesting personality. He has favorites when it comes to students. His GTA's will grade your papers and teach alot, which I did not like. When it comes to quizzes, you tend to wonder where he gets some of these questions. You write alot of papers.
Everything about Mr. deChant is excellent, his teaching techniques, his assignments, his class as a whole, are PERFECT!
I LOVE DECHANT...MWAH FOR DECHANT
I took Religion in Popular Culture with DeChant. As a sociology major, I found this class to be excellent to "cross train" with. He is an engaging, humorous speaker who has a wealth of knowledge to offer those students who take him seriously. A true assett to USF.
Seriously, the best professor I have had at USF and in my life. You have to undoubtedly work hard, but his classes will never put you to sleep. Takes attendance for grade, but most people show up willingly. Great class, very helpful teacher...you will learn a lot. Very comical and professional.
He's a great teacher - classes are interesting and he adds humor as well. I took 2 different classes with him and both were great, even though you do have to work hard. He's very helpful if you need it when writing the papers, and is very passionate about his teaching.
Dr. dechant is one of the most liveliest and "welcoming of the stranger" teacher I know. His Classes are hard with Lots of paper WORK but his humor, jokes (cheap beer and meat) and wonderful caring paersonality make the class worthwhile and him to rank as one of the best at USF
The most awsome professor I've ever had. I love you DeChant.
He is a wonderful teacher, I really enjoyed going to his class. He is very interesting and very funny. His book was great too (The Sacred Santa).
I just found out about this site and looked up Dechant because I have never forgotten him. I took courses w/him way back betw 88-90 (got A's). I participated in his Philosophy Salon, where we'd meet at a Thai restaurant. I still have him on tape as well. I adored this man. He is a wonderful teacher
This man is HOT HOT HOT!!!
I liked taking Mr.DeChant's class. He is a good teacher, and I learned very well and easily in his class.
Dechant is an amazing teacher. He really cares about what he's talking about, and welcomes all students. AMAZING.
the dept's best proff. and recruting agent. trully loves the subject and teaches it with so much zeal that you can't help but be interested--he does his best to involve students, and actually asks for feedback outside of class. most definetly one of the best proffessors i've ever had.
He is a very energetic character. He can be quite humurous and he does a good job of getting to know the different students on a one on one basis. I took him for a 6 week course and he knew everybody's name in the class. I got a B+ when I thought I deserved an A, but I think that was because he let his Grad assistant grade the papers.

Very good teacher...the tests are easy to take, and the information is retainable, great class. Easy easy A if you just go to class!!

I, like many others, consider myself a deChantian. So to say the least, he's an amazing teacher. He also dances funky.
DeChant should teach at a community college. His material is weak. He teaches the basics, but that is it. His book is only feuled by the paper it is written on. I would recommend him to anyone that just wants credits, but not to anyone truly interested in cultural studies. He also teaches in this beatnik free style, that makes him seem cool. He also wheres a beret. Neither of these aspects do I find appealing in a teacher. I don't want a buddy, or a jokester, I want an amazing teacher, he is not.
Superb...
Interesting and somewhat entertaining professor. Is kind of wierd with his teaching style, but he is a great guy and I like how he involves everybody in the discussions. Good teacher overall.
I was very interested in this class before I took it but I hate it now. DeChant is very smart but he expects his students to be up to par with his "genius" and that makes the class confusing and hard. Intro SUCKS--too much material to cover and not enough time and the text is boring. DeChant is funny though and makes the class less dull.
Mr. Dechant is very energetic and enthusiastic, and he makes it fun. He's very friendly and always willing to help students out. If you show up and do the work, you're garunteed a good grade.
Dechant is funny sometimes but the class is very slow paced because he is insistant upon everyone participating. This class REQUIRES attendance and participation to succeed. If you can show up, youre guaranteed to get a good grade.
Easy class, lots of reading, quizes, papers. But keeps things intersting. He is very excited when he teaches, makes class fun. I will def. take him again if given the chance
Attendance is a major part of your grade. We had to do two HUGE projects for my class, I'm talking 50 page papers. It was ridiculous. He is a really cool guy and very smart. Also very high strung; he never sits still which can be distracting at times.
This man is very intelligent, very funny guy. Keeps you interested and entertained, world religions wasnt hard, just try to read at least some !! Participate cuz he love ppl who do and he will learn ur name and make u feel loved..lol But this is a good instructor, my favorite thus far, take this class !!
seems as though he loves what he does, but he has way to many guidelines. If you feel like working hard, take this class...he is nice though.
His hat with the fluffy ball on it made me giggle and that was when I was happiest in class. I found his world religion class to be a joke. His TA's grade everything and never answer their emails. There are like 7 books and we only used 2 of them. He calls you out in class and then cannot hear what you answer. Be prepared to read like woah!
Dr. Dechant was highly recommended to me, but the class was rediculous. Attendance is crucial. We had 6 books, but used two. Mid-term and final were very hard. Had to participate for points, but it was hard to when there were 300 people in the class. TA's weren't helpful. Didn't get much out of the class. Not a good class for freshmen.
DeChant's religion class was fun.I don't know what the others are saying.I never read the chapters and i ended up w/ a B+.He tells you everythign you need to knwo for the midterm and final.Just attend class for a grade and take the daily quizzes.Plus he does offer an extra credit towards the end of the semester that's a big help.He is reccommened!
Dechant is an amazing guy and his World Religions course was definitely well worth it. I studied my butt off in that class, but I learned very much, too! I wouldn't say that he is really that easy because he grades the papers you write pretty tough, but he is fair.
all this class is is writing papers, and it is easy. if you know how to read and then write about what you read, then this class will be easy. i didn't read unless i had to and i just wrote from the heart according to his writing guidlines, and i got an A. DEFINETLY one of the easier IDH classes
He may seem like hes on crack, but he keeps ya interested!!!
Awesome crazy teacher! He won The Most Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher in USF this semester! (Fall 2006) Everyday was different with different jokes. Just be sure to read the book! Do not fall behind!
Worst teacher ever! Definitely not a class/professor I would recommend for incoming freshman. There is a quiz EVERY class and attendance and participation is mandatory or your grade will go down. Do not take!!!
You read the ENTIRE textbook. Quizes almost everyday. He's a good teacher, great at explaining topics. Make sure you read because he likes to call on random people to answer questions.
This is an awesome class if you want to learn! There is a lot of quizzes and you must read the entire book! Not an easy class, but interesting! Love him!
Mr. deChant is an AWESOME professor! If you are not a slacker, then you can definately get by with a B or an A. You must read the assignment, come to class, and do well on quizzes (which you will if you read/go to lectures) The material is interesting and it is obvious that deChant loves his job. Easy for being worth 4 credit hours! Great professor
Easy teacher just do his simple notecards which take like 5 mins even without reading the chapter and be in class and it's an easy A, i didn't get that easy A cause i didn't go or do the cards
keep up with the reading, go to class, study for the midterm and final and youll get an A. pretty easy quizzes every week, no mandatory papers, just extra credit. smart man, knows what hes doing.
great teacher....but i really didnt care about the class so it was hard for me....still pulled of a C+....idk....theres easyier classes u can take...but if u like religion u should really take this one....hes won the best under grad teacher award this year....funny man....true not true?
Keep up
Great teacher! Intro to World Religions is such a fun and interactive class with this instructor.
Super funny man, keeps topics interesting. I had him for Pop Culture and Religion, it was very interesting, but a lot of reading and writing for a summer class. I would definately take him again.
awesome teacher, awesome class, true not true?
I liked him. The course was relatively interesting. Attendance is mandatory for a decent grade.. there is a prep card due or a 10 question quiz in nearly every class. It is no doubt easier to keep up if you read the long chapters, but its possible to survive without doing so. The class is a bit lengthy, but I would recommend it.
DeChant is the best teacher i have had. He knows his material and tries not to let anyone struggle in the class. He is very interactive, and a little fast paced but he is great. Just remember "Yeah thats Not bad"
very funny!
Good teacher. Conveyed the material in an interesting manner, but the text book was horrible.
Pretty good teacher. He has a bad memory, though. He tends to only call on the students whose name he has memorised. If you want extra credit for answering, sit in the middle. It is a pretty easy class, just read and never forget the prep cards or to go to class.
Dechant is an excellent professor. He really knows his field extremely well, and very inciteful. All you have to do is read the text, do the prep cards and take a mini quiz, which are simple. He really wants you to learn and not just work hard for the grade.
Very knowledgable, energetic man. Knows his material and doesnt teach straight from the book. A fun class to take but he doesnt have a dane cook like tendency to be all over the place.
deChant is absolutely amazing. Never have I worked so hard on a class because I was so interested. The class is far from boring, and you are constantly being engaged. There is a lot of reading, but I have never learned so much. I have take 3 or 4 courses with him and loved every one of them. I wish I could have had more. Very helpful!!
I took him for the Honors Arts and Humanities course, for which he taught Religion and Popular Culture. Very interesting class and he's a very smary and entertaining professor. Definitely go to class though! He's very helpful and always understanding of any problems or issues you might have. Recommended!
Mr. Delchant is very passionate about his work. BE SURE you turn in the homework cards and are ready for the quizzes, if you dont read the material before then its just guess work. He's pretty laid back and entertaining in his lectures. Oh and be sure you raise your hand to answer questions, even if youre wrong he gives you extra credit :)
Ok . . . to start off with I didn't do well in this class. I worked as hard as I ever have in any class. I slipped in my reading because of my class load and it hurt me. With that said, this man is passionate, and interests you in the subject. He is hands down my all time favorite professor. This professor gives a unbiased view of religion
Mr. Dechant is a great teacher. Hes a bit on the eccentric side, but is an all around great teacher. For his religion class just make sure you turn in all the class cards, and show up to all the classes. He has so much passion for the subject that it rubs off on the students and you end up extremely interested.
DeChant is by far the most professional and interesting professor I have ever had. He makes you want to do well in his classes. I could listen to him talk all day. Words simply can't describe how well and how clearly he explains the most abstract of topics. Take one of his classes for fun. I did, and I came out looking at the world differently!
Worse class I have ever taken. The paper's are horrible and you have to reade about 50 pages a night. He's a nice guy but stay away from his classes unless you like reading and writing a lot.
DeChant makes this class what it is..he is a great professor. Be ready to use your book..A LOT OF READING.. and the course booklet is your best tutor, it has most of what you need to know inside. Watchout for horrible TAs..they affect your grade.
Awesome professor. He really loves what he does, and he makes you love it too. The class is fairly hard, and you do have to read every night, but he definitely doesn't try to fail you. He offers a bit of extra credit, and the prep cards are an easy grade. The only thing is that you need a ton of note cards, way more than the 30 he says.
Total Beast! He is fun to listen to and reall funny. He sometimes gets really into his lectures and he knows his subject perfectly. I liked to get his class early to see what he would be wearing.
Wouldn't recommend him. Knows what he's talking about but overloads class with information. Required to purchase his books which all basically say the same exact thing and read 50-100 pages for homework each week. Papers are super hard and specific on criteria. Final exam was super hard with a reasonable amount of studying.
Religion & Popular Culture course. This man doesn't just know religion, he is passionate about it and it comes through in his lectures. Very engaging, animated & entertaining, but never at the expense of the subject he teaches. Fantastic teacher, always offers constructive criticism on papers and always willing to meet students for discussion.
This was the worst class I have had. The work load and readings are just too much for the couple days you go over the chapter. I would not take this class unless you enjoy reading 50-80 pages a chapter, and taking good notes. he like to quiz on things he talks about only briefly.
Very interesting course. Be prepared to read 50 plus pages and 3 quizes a week. Raise hand as much as possible. Wouldnt recommend if your looking for an easy A!
Professor deChant is extremely passionate about what he teaches. Comments here complain about the class being hard. It's college, stop complaining. It is a lot of reading, a chapter & 2 quizzes a week on a new religion. You really must read the chapter CLOSELY and pay attention to the lectures to do well in the class. What you put in, you get back.
He is an awesome teacher! You will truly learn a lot in his class. Of course you have to read and you have a quiz almost everyday, but if you do the work you will definitely receive an A.
Very passionate about what he teaches and at times, funny. Nice guy overall. He likes to call on people on the spot so be prepared and he assigns a lot of reading. If you don't like to do college level work, don't take, but I enjoyed it a lot. Great professor; just make sure you read and do the prep cards and you'll be fine.
This class has it's ups and downs. Definitely ready to be out of it by the end of the semester, but if you have any interest in religions it's definitely worthwhile. You learn a lot, weekly quizzes are pretty easy if you at least skim the readings. Midterm and Final were intimidating, but if you pay attention and read(ish) you'll be fine.
Please stay away if you can. He offers papers as extra credit. too much work for just a general education course. The GA basically grade all your papers and he calls people out by names to answer questions. Mandatory attendence, overwhelming reads if you are going full time. To get a good grade you must WORK!
Mr. DeChant is a great professor, his class was interesting and useful. Not a hard teacher if you do your work.
Must say, if you dont attend every class...dont plan on taking this class. He subtracts 2 points from your final grade due to every absence. As well as gives 2 quizes and meets 3 times a week for an hour n half. I thought the class would be interesting but it was beyond boring. He also expects you to buy HIS books, when they say the same thing!!
I would recommend his class to any hardworking students. It is a lot of reading and the more you participate the better. Attendance is cruicial! But he loves what he does.
Best teacher at USF! Class is pretty difficult, not going to lie...Long readings, a lot of expected in-class participation. If he makes you buy his books, its only because he is actually one of the foremost scholars in the field of religious studies. YOU ARE SERIOUSLY MISSING OUT IF YOU DONT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Good Professor overall. Demands a lot of reading and a few papers. If this course is not a requirement for your major, or you don't have a high level of interest, it may be better to not take this course because of the added work; However, he is a Professor that cares about his student and teaching, and a likable guy. He grades pretty fairly, too.
Hard professor, but he tries to keep class somewhat entertaining. He has quizzes twice a week and a final paper. Attendance is mandatory and make sure you are on time or you get points off. Take this class only if you are willing to take notes, read, and learn. It will be worth your time.
Never enough time to complete quizzes, TAs teach 1/3 of the class time, TONS of reading, poorly written and drawn out textbook, MANDATORY attendance. This is one of the toughest classes I have ever taken and I am a senior. He does give a pretty good lecture, but if you want an A, the odds are against you no matter how hard you try. Not worth it.
Im biggest issue is that he wont let you see grades, Hes anti Tech and uses the weirdest and most useless formats for Papers and Reports... Hes a nice man Just not Considerate of students who manage by using technology
Very passionate about REL. You are required to read a chapter (50 or more pages ) a week that you get quizzed on every class. Sometimes material on quizzes are on things not discussed in the lecture. Just make sure you read and participate you will get a good grade.
Good guy, knows a lot about what hes teaching. must read the books if you want to do good on the weekly quizzes. attendance is mandatory, but its easy to get away with having friends sign you in during lecture. calls on you randomly during class off the role, but chances are you wont get called on at all. i would recommend him
I have taken over 5 courses with Prof deChant and he remains by far my favorite professor. Truth: you HAVE to do the reading. He is a big fan of quizzes but they come in handy during the final (which is a culmination of all the quizzes).PARTICIPATE!! He is a very likable person and if you pass by his office, he can talk about ANYTHING!the BEST!
the best teacher at usf. knows what he is talking about and will put you out if you dont read. reading is a must and attending class is vital if you want to get an a. its not as hard as everyone says..students are just lazy
Intro to Rel. It was a great class. The lectures sometimes got long, but it helps to pay attention because a lot of the quizzes will come from the notes. My GTA was super helpful as well. Readings are mandatory, the quiz and tests will come from the info presented. Show up, read, and you will definitely learn something that your grade will reflect.
The greatest teacher I've had thus far. If you're taking a religions course definately take it with deChant.
Great teacher with lots of energy and passion for his field, lots of extra credit opportunities, you have to read but its not complicated readings.
He is very passionate about the class. You have to go to class. HE DOES NOT POST GRADES. The TA would not return emails, nor would he. He will talk to you but very rushed. The class was good overall, but you have to keep up on the readings. Assignments are the same week to week.
He is EXTREMELY passionate about this subject. He made me want to pursue a religious studies degree. The only negative is that he is against computers and wont post grades or answer emails. In my opinion he is one of the best professors I've ever had. Secularization and globalization come up a lot so make sure you know those very well.
Tough, but fair. Best lecturer I've ever seen. His classes are very entertaining, but you MUST ATTEND THEM. I didn't do any of the reading (except the Primer, I read all of that), but still got a B. Study hard for the tests and you'll be fine. And considering there is only two of the: Is that really too much to ask? Great teacher. Enjoy the class!
Wonderful and fun professor. Very passionate, and very energetic. There's only one hard quiz at the beginning, and the rest of the class will have small, easy quizzes and one big paper. The readings are short for each class. Final exam optional (for a final paper). Enjoyed the class very much. Extra credit is easily received!
AMAZING PROFESSOR. he's funny, interesting, insightful, challenging. cant say enough good things about his class but to be fair it does require a lot of reading, critical thinking, time, etc. to get an A.
He is an AMAZING professor, he clearly loves religious studies and instills that into his students. Although attendance is mandatory, I could never dream of missing a class because I love it so much. Yes, there is weekly readings and quizzes, but the reading is so interesting that you barely notice. The only problem I have is lack of communication.
best professor ive had in 3 years. hes very knowledgeable about what he teaches. he always loves to have a one on one conversation if you have questions. VERY interesting on his way of thinking. VERY influential, and nice. he will call on you in class, but he knows your name, your not just a student in a sea of 200.
This man is an inspiration to me. He is the most genuinely objective teacher with the most sincere intentions. If you are able to take any course taught by him, you should; it could be a life changing experience. Amazing!
As a someone just taking this class as a requirement to finish, this is an awesome class. He is very passionate and helpful. Attendance is Mandatory but class is interesting. 1 big Quiz. 2 Papers (if you do the final paper over the Final Exam) Rest really easy quizzes about the Readings. Loved the class and the teacher! would love to take him again
Amazing professor. Took the class as just a requirement, and was very interested in almost everything he said. He's extremely passionate. Easy quizzes if you pay attention. Attendence is mandatory, but that's not a big deal.
He acts like this Intro to World Religions is not an INTRO COURSE ! You loose 2 points on your FINAL GRADE for every absence. Like seriously this isn't 1st grade. He teaches until the class is over (and usually past that) and he doesn't even give a decent amount of extra credit AND he gives a freaking quiz EVERY CLASS . HORRIBLEEEEEEE
Attendance is mandatory or you'll receive 2 points off your final grade, 1 point off for being late/leaving early, but the lectures aren't too bad. He gives an easy quiz every class based off of a video or the reading. He has a genuine interest for religion and makes classes entertaining. You don't know your grade unless you see your TA.
Dechant is an amazing Professor. Right off the bat you can tell he is extremely knowledgeable about Religion and he has a genuine passion for it. Attendance is mandatory and there is a quiz every class but nothing that is too hard as long as you skim the section beforehand. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
He is very passionate about this subject. Attendance is important!!!Only the midterm and final study sheets are uploaded to blackboard, nothing else. If you want to know your grade in the class, you have to talk to your TA. There is only 1 reseach paper but many bonus papers. Pretty good class. Class participation is key :)
I love professor Dechant! this is my third class that I will be taking with him and I just think he is fantastic. He is very interested and enthusiatic about the subjects. I would suggest reading the textbooks though because his quizzes can be difficult when you don't. But he is so great that the actual class makes up for it. He is a professor that makes you eant to be a religious studies major
took world rel, i got 110 in his class by just following the directions and answering questions in class, there is almost a letter and a half of EC if you use it, he gives you EC for answering questions in class, ALWAYS HAVE THE READING DONE!!!!!
BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. He is so knowledgeable and passionate that everything he taught just sunk into my brain. I'm dying to take another class with him. Yes, you HAVE to read and you have to study, but its cool stuff. HIGHLY RECCOMEND
This class was pretty easy! Attendance is mandatory but if you skip you'd be lost and fail the quizzes anyways. Tons of extra credit work to do. Always read and you'll get 80's on the quizzes. Only one research paper due and its short. Get participation points and you'll have an A plus.
My expectations were met with this course. I learned a lot about different religions. This is a very interesting class if you have an open-minded attitude. Mr. Dechant will keep you on your toes by randomly calling on people from the attendance sheet. He is very passionate about what he teaches which makes the course that much more enjoyable.
This is a really great class to take whether its pertaining to your major or not. Dechant makes it pretty interesting because of his passion for the subject. If you go in to the class with an open mind, you'll come out learning a lot. Plus he gives plenty of extra credit work.
Take this class! There are a ton of extra credit opportunities. There are quizzes pretty much every class period and reading of 50 pages every week and if you read, then you will do well on the quizzes. There is one paper which is only 3-5 pages and he has a complete description of how to do the paper as well as everything in the class. Great prof!
I hated this class oh so much. Like He could not stay on topic to save his life. If it wasn't for my T.A i would have failed. Oh and hes like beyond condescending. I got a good grade but it was painful.
Horrible class. Thought it would be an easy A.. no. Even though he gives tons of extra credit, you have to read your book or you will get bad grades. A lot of quizzes and you must go to class. He calls on random people to talk during lectures. TA sessions are boring but more helpful than the lecture itself.
Dechant is very animated about what he teaches. He is very fun to listen to at first however as the semester goes on it becomes a bit of a drag. His grading system is absolutely terrible (weird check mark system) and grades are never posted. Final exam preparation is terrible and most of the 10 page crib sheet questions are not in your notes.
best teacher I have had since attending college I got an A definitely worth taking for New Religions in America
I LOVE HIM! This is one of my favorite classes to attend. He actually teaches and calls on students to keep you engaged. There are mini quizzes during the course and two or three papers. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class!!! As long as you show up, participate and do the work you will pass.
the class at first seems easy but as the course continues the chapters get only harder. and his final is 30 percent not cool
Really enjoyed the format for senior seminar. Definitely challenging with depth but gives clear direction and expectation. You must write well, includes a 40 page guide! Movie night is a blast! Articles become redundant and the cost of the ProCopy materials is steep in addition to other required books. Friendly and helpful and encouraging.
Honestly, if you do read the long chapters and pay attention to the lecture you will do fine on the quiz you have every class meeting. Some of the questions can be tricky, but they're okay. If you're interested in religion, you should take this class. deChant is a funny teacher. There are also 2 papers but you have more than enough time to do them.
Took Dechants class in the summer, and I loved it. He's super quirky. You do have to read to pass the quizzes and test, but if you pay attention to the lectures you can maybe get away with just that. He is always giving out extra credit opportunities. You have to put in a little work to get an A but easy B. Overall loved his class!
cool class! Dechant is a nice guy who really wants you to learn. Hes super knowledgeable on all things religion. However be ready to read the textbook and discuss what you read upon entering class. Overall pretty easy work as long as you READ the material I passed with a B
He is the most lively professor I've ever seen. There is a quiz every class and response paper every week but he discusses most of the material before in class. So just pay attention and do the readings. The GTA's are very helpful. I'd take his class again.
Absolutely won't use Canvas, lectures sort of drag on about halfway through the semester, "hard" on cell phones in that TAs will walk around a lecture-hall sized class to tell people to put them away.
DO NOT SKIP CLASS. There is a ten question quiz every single class. Make sure to answer questions he ask in class so you can get points so if you do skip class at least you have points to back it up. READ READ READ. Which was my mistake, i did not fully read the textbook which is why i always got average grades on my quizzes.
He is really enthusiastic about the subject of religion. He knows a lot and he can make things interesting. You definitely have to go to class, he makes quizzes almost every class or has something due. if you read and pay attention you should do well. There are no test, just a bunch of quizzes and one final.
Not a great class if you are looking for an easy A. You HAVE to read the chapters to pass and the final is ridiculously difficult. Take this class if it interestss you, but not if you are looking for just another FKL.
Loved, loved, loved Professor deChant! He is a quirky older man with such passion for his job. His lectures are long but he does try his best to engage you. Attendance is taken every class, and he doesn't use canvas which is kinda annoying. Assigns a reading engagement card is due once a week, but its super easy. Awesome professor!!!
TERRIBLE!! Do not take! Any other class would be better to fulfill your FKL. The lectures are huge and very impersonal which is fine except he expects students to participate in class by raising their hands in a room of three hundred people. Only one exam which is the final.. Doesn't use canvas so you need to see your TA to discuss your grade.
Best professor to take this class with! Attendance counts and can be very useful in understanding the material since he is an awesome lecturer imo. Honestly, if you pay attention, participate in class, do all the extra credit and take notes you will get an A. The final matters (32%) and the people who are saying it was hard probably didn't study.
Terrible class. He gives a quiz every class that you can only do good on if you do the 50+ page reading every week and its impossible to know your grade cuse he "will never put anything on canvas" and the TA's suck. Only way to pass is to read the book twice and write down everything he says. Don't take this class! It sucked and I regret it
A pretty easy class if you read and participate, theres always a quiz after each lecture, so be prepared. There is also homework, and be prepared to write two term papers. Attendance is a must. Also read before each class or you might be lost. Use common sense.
He wasn't bad it was a big lecture hall. Get close to your TA the basically handle everything. There's a pop quiz and or homework in almost every class so you have to go to class. He gives a lot of extra credit towards the end of the semester but you really have to work for it. He seems really passionate about this subject.
Don't ever take this class on mammas my dude. First of all, it's boring as hell. Like unless you're a religion major or something like that, you're gonna fall asleep. You have to go to every class since attendance is key. And guess what my dude? You have to answer questions or else you lose like 20% of your grade. F Mr. DeChant and his whole set.
With weekly reading and in class tests, if you don't show up, you won't pass. However, he makes the lectures interesting, and if you put in effort, this class can be really fun.
He's a really great teacher! He's engaging, fair, and gives many opportunities for extra credit points. You have daily quizzes in class, but he literally goes over everything you need to know right before them. There a reading response card due for every chapter that are super easy. And there's 1 paper due. If you fail, it's your own fault!
Please, save yourself the trouble and pain, do not take his intro course or any class he teaches, unless you are a religions major. He doesn't post you grades so you might think you've been acing those in-class quizzes, but then you find out THROUGH the midterm grade that you have a C-. I tell all my friends not to take any religions classes now.
Do not take this professor. You have to read 40+ pages a week. The quizzes he gives are extremely specific about the reading. You have to attend every class or you get 2 points taken off your final grade for every absence. He doesn't post grades. The worst part is his final exam. He gives you 8 pages of just words and dates that are not in order.
Wouldn't reccomend if you're looking for an easy A. Doesn't post grades, you have to schedule a meeting with him or a GTA to find out your grade. Quizzes almost every class on the 40+ page readings. Tough grader on the final paper. Final is extremely hard and the crib sheet is of little to no help.
Dr. Dellchant was an interesting character. Always be alert and ready for class, he does not like sleepers & is very strict on no technology in the class. The pop quizzes he gives are very important on the reading on the prior night. And come to fine all the quiz questions are the same exact ones on the final itself. Be prepared to do work!
Book is needed for homework. Pop quizzes everyday, so do readings. You can't even be late to this class or you'll miss a quiz, cuz he likes to do them at the very beginning within the first 10 minutes. I was disappointed, class didn't meet my expectations. He went too fast, could barely take a second to learn. Easy class though.
Find someone else. Dechant is nice, but that doesn't make it worth taking this class. Only way to check your grade is to contact your TA in person. You have quizzes almost every class, and if you miss class you get pretty much 5% off your grade. You have to buy his book and another textbook that isn't helpful. Plus you can't turn anything online.
Your grade will depend on your attendance, quizzes, reading responses and the TA you are assigned since they'll be the one grading your papers. DeChant is very nice, but if I could choose again I would pick someone else. Especially if the other person actually posts grades on canvas
Good teacher, interesting lectures, very excited about religion, lots of extra credit, easy quizzes every class, caring and humorous , but!! Doesn't use canvas that makes it a way more difficult to keep up with the class. The only way to find out the grade is to go to the TA and that sucks!! Otherwise great class
We're in an era where we expect most of the time using computers to do our courses, but deChant's fully traditional Religion and Ecology course is a rare art. Not a lot of courses are taught his way anymore; reminds me of how courses were taught when I was a child. Really enjoyed this old way of doing things. I'm glad to have met deChant.
A LOT of reading every week, no slides, no canvas use so we can't follow the progress of out grades, just discussion in class about what we read, very broad, not an aim goal class. There are quizzes in every class. There is one paper about Globalization and a bonus paper. There is some lecture for extra credit. I won't take it again.
Dell DeChant was an inspirational prof to me. A real gem in Religion Studies and USF overall. He provided quizzes at the end of the class and most of the answers were mentioned during the lecture. We had to read for every class but it was never too much. Really passionate about his subject. I wish I had to take more courses with him. Fair grader.
Terrible! Aweful teaching styles! He does not post any grades so you dont know how youre doing in the class, he does not give ANY feedback whatsoever and we have a quiz everyday from questions he puts on the board, he will NOT go back to other questions when you ask.. you will not learn a thing from him and you will be so frustrated.
All you really need to do for this class is show up and read enough to answer questions in class. Quizzes are mostly based on lecture material. You can tell that he loves teaching and he cares about his students. He is also very open minded. If you answer a question incorrectly, he wont ridicule you but instead make your answer better.
Dont play yourself. Hes cool but if you dont have a lot of time on your hands, dont take this class. There is SO much reading and you actually have to do it because there is a quiz every day. His TAs grade everything and they arent soft graders. For one of those classes that is usually just to fill in an FKL/GenEd, its too much work.
There are quizzes every class so be sure not to miss. The quizzes on the assigned reading (which is 20 pages MINIMUM). The professor himself is very nice, but the coursework is pretty heavy. He does offer extra credit; do it, even if you do not need it at the moment. Unless you have photographic memory, the final will bring your grade down.
deChant is crazy. He teaches straight from his brain -- no powerpoints or anything. he just sits up there and talks. Impossible to reach outside class. No email addresses for him or either of the TAs. The TAs aren't very nice either. They don't put in any grades until the last week so you don't know how you're doing. DONT let him learn your name.
DeChant is a great guy, very respectful and lively. However, his class gets boring at times since there are no Powerpoints to go with his lectures, its just him speaking for the hour and fifteen minutes. He quizzes each class, but he hints at the answers during his lectures, so take notes! Attend every class or you get like 3% off your grade.
Every week you are take a 10-13 question quiz on the week's reading which is a MINIMUM of 20 pages. BUT if you listen to the lecture, you'll get at least half of the questions. Grades take FOREVER to be posted by the TA's. One good thing is that they give plenty of extra credit, but don't rely on it. If you don't show up to class, you're screwed.
He's a nice guy, but there is SO much reading, and if you don't thoroughly read every single page you're basically screwed. Also don't take his class if you don't think you can come to every single lecture because there is a quiz every single one. Over the course of the entire semester I've missed 6 classes and my grade tanked because of it
Has a lot of energy/passion for someone that has been teaching the same subject for so long. It's to your benefit to read, I hardly did though. Participate a lot in class & you'll get the gist of what you need to know. Don't skip! I missed 3 days & it dropped me down to a B. If you pay attention in class/don't miss any days you should get an A/B
Hes very passionate about his teaching but he is not fit to be a teacher. He gives 0 feedback, he doesnt put grades up in canvas so youll never know how youre doing in the class until the end. He assigned way too much reading and expects you to understand every part of it because he refuses to help you or answer questions.
Stand up guy. VERY passionate. For this class, you can expect weekly quizzes, a single short paper that you will work on throughout the semester, two/three extra credit opportunities (1-7 points total), and a comprehensive final exam. Get ready to be called on, participation counts towards your grade. He refers to his students by last name.
Prof. deChant is superb. His lectures are nothing short of entertaining, but they are also extremely informative. He sets you up to succeed in the course but to also walk away with a solid understanding of how religion has impacted society and the way it has developed over time. Amazing class and amazing professor!
I took Mr. deChant in World Religions one semester and fell in love with his teaching style. So much so that I ended up taking several more of his classes to learn more from him. He is an absolutely legendary professor and has deeply impacted my view of the world. Compassionate, wise, and funny are words that aren't strong enough to do him justice.
You must read the textbook!! He is very passionate about his job! He will randomly call on people to answer questions about the textbook. There are also quizzes every class period! Very passionate and wants his students to do well!
I took Professor DeChant for an intro to religion class. He's a very passionate man and a good person. But he's not a great teacher. He asks students questions and doesn't let them answer. When a student ask a question or needs clarification he often ignores it or answers in excruciating detail that rhe class gets off topic.
I never had any interest in religious studies, but he made it so interesting! Lots of reading every week but it isn't too bad if you do it in chunks and take THOROUGH notes to refer to in class because he will call on you randomly. Other then that, pretty easy A and really not a lot of work besides the once a week chapter reading. Very kind guy.
This class is a commitment, there is an assigned reading every week that you must be prepared to discuss . You are required to go to the Botanical Gardens one hour every week. Also, he doesn't post grades throughout the semester. However, he was amazing. He cares about his students and the course. The course is very interesting, I would recommend.
You really get out of this class what you put in- he's been teaching so long he's basically ironed out his whole syllabus to best give an intro to such a complicated topic. While you dont HAVE to read and can mostly skate by on the lectures alone, it's definitely worth it for a deeper understanding of the source material.
I have had two classes with DeChant, Agrarianism and the Sacred and Intro to World Religions. I can easily say that this man is who made me fall in love with Religious Studies. I even changed my major after his polite and soft demeanor slowly dragged me in. He truly cares about his craft and is always willing to help. I wish he taught more classes!
I really liked Mr. Dechant and his style of teaching. I took the class for a mere interest in world religions and I ended the class with a love for learning about religion. Read the book (doesn't need to be in depth, but just read it) and pay attention in class (his lectures made it easy to pay attention). Take notes and class and you will be fine.
deChant knows his stuff. He has been teaching for a while and really makes religion a topic that is interesting. The readings are long but it's worth reading them. I found participating in class made it more enjoyable because of his knowledge and ability to keep you interested. The class was not hard if you put a little effort into reading.
Professor Dechant is a great teacher and very helpful after class If needed. I took this class this past Spring semester and it was 100% in person. As long as you keep up with the reading and attend the class you will get an A. Most quizzes/tests contain material gone over in the lecture so you will miss the content if you don't attend.
Professor De Chant is one of the best professor I have had at USF. He is SUPER caring and always willing to help students. I really enjoyed his class, it will definitely be one of the classes that I remember long after my time at USF. Highly recommend that you take Regenerative Agriculture with him if you get the chance, it is really eye opening.
I highly recommend Regenerative Agriculture! Professor DeChant is awesome, he is so caring and passionate about sustainable agriculture. It is also really cool that you get land on campus to grow food.
deChant is such a nice guy. He cares a lot about what he teaches and his students. Definitely don't take the class if you don't do the readings, but if you do do them, the class will be easy. Most of the class is discussion based, you write a couple papers, but he gives good feedback on them. Highly recommend.
Kindest professor I have ever had on campus. Passionate about the material and his courses. If you're looking to learn and have genuine discussions about religion and agriculture, he is your guy.
Dr. deChant is a total sweetheart who cares deeply about both religious and ecological topics, and will work with you to achieve an A (it isn't difficult with him). He may not be teaching for too much longer, so be sure to take him while he's still available!
One of the best professor in USF. Super nice guy, fun to attend his classes. Took this class as an elective and i really loved the class and the way he teach religion effect on ecology. 10/10. God bless Mr. DeChant
He's honestly a passionate and knowledgeable teacher. Hit or miss with emails for a while, and tests and papers must be printed out. He really cares about his students and will spend his time explaining anything until we understand
Dechant is a seasoned professor who is genuinely excited about teaching every day and appreciates his students. Participation is a huge part of your grade. It was like an English class in the sense that it was purely reading, writing papers, and analyzing the material. Everyone's faith was well respected throughout the course.
Dechant is a dedicated professor who brings passion to his classes. Participation is key, but the workload is manageable with the help of Unstuck AI and the provided textbook. Definitely recommended!
