Easy class and nice guy. You have to attend because of pop quizzes, but the material is pretty interesting. There is a lot of busy work, but overall it's a pretty easy A.
This class is so easy. Just make sure attend because you never know when there will be a pop quiz. The teacher is very easy going and is always willing to go over anything that you might not understand too well. Test and quizes are based mostly the notes from class but make sure to read the book as much as you can.Take the class with him if you can
GREAT prof. Makes class really interesting. Tests mostly on lecture notes, but some of test material comes from book - so read the book (including intro to book - you will see test questions from intro.) Gives surprize quizzes, so you MUST attend class (quiz worth 100 points.) With regular attendance and paying attention to lecture - easy grade.
Loved this class. He makes it really interesting w/ movies & explains everything very thouroughly. However, U MUST GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY. He gives 3 pop quizzes & tends to give them on days when people might not come to class...day before spring break, day after 420, last day of classes before finals. they are worth 100pts each and there is 1000 pts
Great Professor!!!! Makes class interesting. Not a hard class IF YOU ATTEND REGULARLY. Take real good notes because he tests heavily from his lectures. To get the "A" you must read the book. Gives unannounced quizzes (3) that are worth 10% of your grade so you must attend. You will learn a lot about many religions.
This class was worthless I have taken several religious studies classes this is the only one that was horrible. He did not teach much of anything loved giving 45 minute video clips with little sense in our class. Is very unhelpfull does not meet during office hours and is a jerk if you try and discuss things with hime. His class is easy.
Fun class. Professor has sense of humor and interesting teaching methods (lectures sometimes, lots of class discussion, movie clips, etc). Gave 3 pop quizzes each worth 10% of grade (but they are open note/book) and 2 exams each worth 30%. The exams are half scantron, half essay and can sometimes be difficult. Come to class and pay attention.
Took as a summer class. Attendance is a must is you want an A or B. Three pop quizzes. If you miss them, no make up points. Two tests. Take good notes - quizzes come almost directly from them. Reading is a good idea, though. Very interesting class. I learned a lot and enjoyed it. Professor uses movies to help understand different religions.
He was a good teacher. A lot of lectures and movie clips that he integrated to the lecture or the class in general. Attendence is a must. 2 tests (20 mult ?s & essay) & 3 pop quizzes. took this class during summer. Go over lectures and do the readings. Pop quizzes were open book from the readings mostly and some lecture. Good Prof.
Very interesting class! Read every page of the book or you will get screwed on tests! Participate a lot or your grade drops at the end
He is really nice and the class is really straight foward. No trick questions. There are two exams no comprehensive final and they are composed of 25 mc and one essay question. He is really lenient when grading the essay portion of the test. We had an in class essay extra credit worth 45 pts.
This was my first "C" in college. I spent a lot of time on this class and never missed a class. He wastes a lot of time with movies. I was given an incorrect grade at the end of the semester and I couldn't get a hold of him through his email address and he was never in his office. I thought he was a horrible teacher and I wouldn't suggest the class
Dr. Whitaker is a genius. The class is as interesting as you want it to be. He doesen't spoon feed the material and you have to be a "big kid" and do your reading, but in the end, you'll learn a lot. PARTICIPATE - that counts for a lot. P.S. totally hot!
GREAT Teacher!!! I took world religions over summer and I never found myself bored. The text book is a easy and interesting read- but you must read it. He tells great stories...he's very well traveled and has a lot of information to share. He makes religion fun- no fancy lingo- very straight forward. Definately take him!
May be good at religious studies; useless at philosophy. Told me that he didn't know what he was doing! Taught upper division class like a 101 class. Lots of videos, play acting, listening to songs. Avoids answering questions. Makes some really bad mistakes - gave a wrong definition of the naturalistic fallacy. Easy, but you'll learn nothing.
Great course if your interested in history of Christianity, or for an exploration course. there 3 pop up quizzes throghout the semester that are worth 100 points, and its a 1000 total point class. quizzes are on material in class, and get to watch some interesting videos, and is funny how he relates it to the class. Take him if you can!
Very good professor. Definitely not a philosophy professor, but he does know his stuff regarding religion. Easy class, attendance is mandatory (10% grade is participation). He makes the class interesting and encourages thought from the students, which is refreshing in a philosophy course. Take him if you know what's good for you.
Great professor. Easy class. Go to class, listen to lectures and watch the movies and you will have an easy A or B Definately recommend this guy.
In class assignments & POP QUIZ's (3) DONT MISS ANY CLASS. TAKE NOTES, usually open book quiz's. I missed one pop quiz so I got a C+ instead of a B.Participate in class, he will remember you at the end of the semester when he grades participation. He's a good prof. I will be taking another one of HIS classes next semester because of it.
one of the best professors I've had. Brilliant, yet approachable. Loved the class!
easy class. very interesting professor. definitely recommended.
4quizzes+midterm+final=grade. Quizzes are unpredictable, but simple if you go to class & pay attention. Same goes for the midterm and final. Some questions for quizzes and tests come from book, but barely. Most from lecture. Nice guy. Lectures weren't horrible, sometimes a struggle to get through. Sit near the front, he doesn't speak very loud.
This was quite possibly the boringest teacher to ever exist. He seems cool at first but you soon realize that his slow boring stories are the basis of the entire class. I would recomend another teacher or a whole different class if possible to fill your requirements.
This professor had no idea what he was talking about! You will only get more confused about eastern religions by taking this class. Lectures make no sense, are very dull, usually off topic and the presentation quality is not enhanced by the professors nervousness, rambling and general forgeting where he was at in the lecture.
Great class, I learned so much from this class. This class is not boring. Take this Professor if you can. He gives some extra credit.
This class was horrible, it was so boring. Not organized at all, had my class buy a book that we ended up ever using. Have to go to every class even because of a chance of a pop quiz worth 10% of grade (3 in all). He is a very smart guy but cannot teach. If you value our time then do not take this class
Not a great lecturer. Points come from book. He was entertaining, however, and the class had a nice feel to it. He would randomly let us go early, which was excellent. If you go to class everyday and review your notes, it's an easy A. This class changed my view on religion because of this professors unbiased, understanding presentation.
I found this class 2 b easier than the prof. led me on 2 believe. Everything 4 tests can be found in lecture, so take good notes. The readings really only come in handy when u need 2 prepare 4 the essay portion of tests, but he usually picks the easiest & broadest topic anyway. Bring the book b/c pop quiz questions often come straight from text
I really enjoyed this teacher. He has a great way of delivering information while entertaining you with well known movies to show religious values and events. He's very soft spoken so sit up front, but other than that I definitely reccomend this teacher.
He made class very interesting, I loved the movies we watchedin class that related to specific religions... He is an amazing teacher!!! The class was fairly easy, just take notes and study about an hour before the midterm and final and u'll be fine... oh and you get to use your notes and book on the pop quizes:-)
He was really cool! Very fun class. Quizzes are straight from the book. Exams are based on lectures and class discussions. highly recommend this class!
I took this class my first semester and it was the best class I had. I loved going to his lectures because they were very interesting and he related everything to now. He used real life situations to relate to religion. It's also very funny because he teaches with sarcasm. I highly recommend this class to everyone. You'll love it!
I took his Bible as Lit class. It sounded like fun, but he is so boring, I have to force myself to go to class. He spends the first weeks explaining Lit 101 concepts, then he goes slowly over the books with power point presentations. He forces you to give a 15 minute presentation, and sitting through these things is torture. Easy A boring professor
the class was a little too easy, given the level. i felt like i was in a class meant for freshmen. he is amusing.
Interesting lectures, movies, and even reading. The class activities were fun and you can engage with other students. This class really helps you learn more about the world. Study lectures notes and its a breeze. He's down to earth and can interact well with a younger generation.
Hes pretty cool but his lectures move VERY slow. And getting a straight, quick answer to a question is almost impossible. One mid term, one final, 2 open note quizzes (doesnt say when so go to every class!) and a one page journal for every chapter in the book (one chapter every 2 weeks). Dont expect to learn too much from this class but its not bad
Unannounced quizzes, so class attendance is mandatory, however the material is interesting - assuming you have a preconceived desire to learn it. Entertaining stories. Tests are taken directly from class notes.
Interesting lectures but at times they can be super boring. We watched a lot of recent movies which made class go by faster. Most of the test material comes from his lecture notes but it's a good idea to read the book. 2 pop quizzes worth 50 points so you have to go to class, but you're allowed to use your book and class notes.
He was a super chill teacher. Definitely not a hard class. The quizzes were open book open note, just remember to study a lot of dates on the finals and youll be fine
very good class, I really enjoyed it. He is a good teacher. He was very biased on a couple of religions, unfairly assaulting them, while praising others as better, tho. He will make fun of you if you hold any absolutist views. not very tolerant. But the text used in class was fantastic. He was a good teacher, easy homework and tests. EC available.
lectures the whole time; watches a lot of movies; completely boring; nice guy; 2 pop quizzes; 2 exams; 10 journal entries; for a 100 level class, really nit picky about dates and useless information; exams are based on notes and book- must know everything in order to get an A; if you go to class, take good notes, skim the chapters, you'll get a B
If you are a Christian who takes the Bible literally, then skip this class. Whitaker lobs a lot of criticism at it. Also he is only interested in his own opinion and those students who support his opinions. Yes, he may seem like an easy "A", but you will get annoyed at listening to him day after day spreading misinformation about the Bible.
go to all lectures and take very detailed notes! final and midterm are heavily weighted and have very detailed questions. required to write 10 1-paged single spaced journals on the religions. 2 open-note quizzes as well. but if you go and take notes you will be fine i got an A
The title may seem interesting but it's a boring class. Boring lectures made it hard to show up for class. Two enormous text books=too hard to carry. Class exercises, a couple of pop quizzes, mid-term, final, and a HORRIBLE 12-14 pg research paper due on the Bible!
I really enjoyed this class. Whitaker is a nice guy, really chill. The openbook quizzes are nice. I had an A all semester then ended with a B? I'm not sure what happened...guess the final was really heavily weighted. But this is an interesting class and requires minimal effort for a good grade.
Professor Whitaker is a really nice professor. He engages the class with interesting class discussions, and opens the floor up to debates. Most reading interesting.
Totally awesome, funny teacher. Very chill and easy to understand. All his classes consist of 2 open note EASY quizes and 3 exams. All his questions are STRAIGHT from the reading and easy to remember from the book.
excellent teacher! he was able to explain world religion as they relate to modern times and specifically today's college students. he used lots of modern examples to explain concepts. he delivers facts, the only people who seemed offended were pretty much evangelicals who were too closed minded to accept the real history of the bible.
EASY GE class! Simple- go to class, take notes, study night before the test. Tests are EASY and STRAIGHT from the notes! Class is actually interesting and no tricks behind it.
Good class, very interesting...I just did not appreciate his sarcasm. It made him very difficult to talk to and he always seemed to have this "I'm smarter than you" attitude about him. I would recommend the class if you can take it with a different teacher.
Whitaker is a good professor. I have a once a week class from 7-930pm and he keeps me awake because his lectures are interesting. He also uses mixed media such as movies and alot of video clips to help us better understand his lectures, and also to keep us entertained. He's quiet but overall a very good class.
This teacher was amazing! i highly recommend him! this class was so interesting and really straight forward. Whitaker's life is extremely interesting and his lectures are not boring at all. He's traveled everywhere and actually knows a lot about what he's talking about. He's soo NICE and really UNDERSTANDING. you'll get a good grade if you show up:
Whitaker is amazing. his lectures are interesting and he actually cares about what he is talking about. he has traveled all over the world and brings that into his lectures. the games we played were funny and useless. i really looked forward to going to his class and learned a lot. the site visits are important, totally worth the experiences.
astonishing how people rate him so good. he is worthless! full loads of work and RIDICULOUS site visits. i'm a upper division finance major taking 19 units this semester. i am spending more time in this class than the sum of my other 3 upper division finance classes. and im only taking this class for CR/NC. this is how ridiculous this dude is. AVOI
Very nice professor, helpful and willing to work with you if you have a demanding schedule. Very informative and easy to follow just go to class, read and do your work (like you should) and you will get an A.
I didn't care for this class at all. It's discussion based so of course the know-it-alls chime in the whole time. Very hard to take notes and study for. The assignments weren't too bad and had to do with what you were learning and going over but again, hard to study when all you hear is everyone elses two cents.
Roy definitely takes some getting used to. His teaching styles are strange and he's not always clear. If you go to class and pay attention (which is hard sometimes) you'll at least pass. No attendance, but he does give 2 unannounced quizzes, so its best you go. Assignments werent hard but kinda dumb and tests were in class essays. Not a hard grader
There is some work in this class. You have three tests, 3 site visits ,3 sets of review question, and 2 pop quizzes which are open book. Overall, Whitaker is not that bad tho. Just go to class and pay attention a little, and its very simple to get a B. If you try a little you can get an A
Whitaker is the best teacher I've had at State. He makes religion interesting and easy to understand. He has 2 unannounced pop quizzes, so you should go every day. His tests are essay tests. I studied the day of and got A's on both. His site visits are also a super easy way to get points. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM!
nice teacher, sometimes interesting..a lot of work goes into this class but fairly easy grader... need to visit three different churches which i found to be kinda interesting.. not so bad.. and for the three hour class, he tends to make it a 2 hr which is pretty cool..
this class was actually pretty interesting. there are 3 pop quizzes throughout the semester and i suggest you STAY till the end of class to make sure you dont miss one. he normally gives them AFTER the break so quite a few people will leave and miss it. whitaker is very nice and approachable and i eventually came to enjoy the class
A good class to take. a few pop quizzes, tests are fairly simple as long as you follow thestudy guides. attendance mandatory in case of pop quizzes. Good choice for a GE
Great teacher. The class is interesting and easy just as long as you pay attention to the lectures, skim the book, and focus on what is on the study guide. Got an A- just by cramming before the test, doing well on the site visits and extra credit. He's a cool teacher, highly recommended!
I took his class first semester Freshman year and think it was a good transition between HS and college. He offers extra credit, which is mostly from questions in the back of the book. Tests are fair. Very straightforward in lecture!
Whitaker grades pretty hard, but dont let that keep you from taking the course because it's really interesting, and he's a cool guy. 2 pop quizzes... one around the 3rd week of class and one around the 2nd to last or last class meeting. Only way to pass exams is to write ALL of the essays from the study guide ahead of time and memorize.
Good teacher, knows what he's talking about. Very clear about what you need to study to pass, if you do the readings you should be able to get an A. The only thing I didn't like personally were the site visits, but if you are really interested in this subject then you'll really like this class!
You have to go to two temples/churches throughout the semester and write a 3-5 page paper about each (your experience). I found this to be fun. 2 exams with 2 short answer questions each. 2 pop quizzes. And a workbook. All in all, great class and an A if you don't mind writing. He manages to keep the class intriguing through his lectures and humor
Very boring. Extremely strict in grading. As an atheist, I thought this class would be very interesting, but I was wrong. It was a dull class. 3 exams (bluebook) and 3 papers and 1 site visit. Take another class for your GE. I suggest Phil 332. Don't waste your time. You can learn about atheism and secularism on your own.
Great teacher. Professor Whitaker is very knowledgeable and makes learning the material interesting. I had no interest in religion before I took this class, but now I am much more open to the world. If you can't open your mind to new information, or you are very lazy, take yourself elsewhere and don't ruin it for others. You will learn a lot.
Professor Whitaker is an extremely knowledgeable teacher, and means the best for his class. He truly cares, and presents material in such a way that if you read, use your brain a little, and study, you'll learn alot. Just do the readings, come to class ( 2 pop quizzes ), follow the exam study guide, and do your site-visit early. Highly recommended
This was an incredibly interesting class that was impartial and analytical in its judgement of atheism, humanism and secularism. All exams are completely handwritten by you and he is partial to a "complete" answer, even if it's a definition. He is approachable and open to dialogue, as I had an essay that received a 79% turn into a 91%. Great guy!
he is a very good teacher and will teach exactly what you need to know. make sure you pay attention to the study guide he hands out because that is literally what is on the test. make sure you study the study guide and you'll be fine. also you don't need a text book, but you do need to buy a novel and a workbook (together total= 20 bucks).
Very interesting class. 3 exams 1 site visit paper and 2 pop quizzes. Easy grader, I recommend this class.
1 midterm, 1 final, 1 site visit, 2 response "essays" (only 300 words each). Everything is submitted online, you don't even have to go to class. Easy GE and Whitaker is a really nice guy and extremely smart.
Easiest class on the planet and easiest A. ONLINE midterm and final that are 15-20 questions each. Two response "essays" that are only a max of 400 words and one site visit essay that only has to be 2 - 3 pages. He doesn't take attendance and you never need to go to class.
This class was really interesting! I learned a lot about the connection of hip hop & religion. At times, he can be dull but he is good at making you understand concepts and shows clips of rappers and what not. Make sure you go to class because the 300 pt (15 questions) exams come from class discussion!
I am telling you now this is the best UpperGE Class I have taken. This is College and you need to attend to learn, If you are the type who does not go to class then you dont deserve to be in SDSU or any school at all. You might think this class is Difficult but take my advice do not drop attend classes and never miss a lecture you get an absolute A
I showed up to class 7 times the entire semester, contributed to conversation every time, and barely made minimum word counts on essays. I got an A in the class. Lots of videos and most lectures are discussion driven. He's actually a knowledgeable and great teacher too; you can actually learn something if you pay attention.
Professor Whitaker's Religious Diversity class has been super informative & engaging. He's kind of an awkward guy, but he's brilliant and can be really funny. He does a great job of presenting information in an objective manner. His midterm & final are online & super easy! Also, there's 2 papers, a site visit, and a group Tumblr project. Love him!
I took Professor Whitaker's World Relgious Diversity class this semester. It was my favorite class. He makes the class interesting, and even brought in guest speakers from the religion we were studying. You have a midterm and a final, both online. 2 essays, a site visit, and a web page and that is really it. Loved this class!
I took American Religious diversity with Whitaker and it was a great class. Easy A and also very interesting material. If you go once a week you'll probably be fine, but I found myself wanting to show up to this class more than I expected. Whitaker really knows his stuff and you can tell he's passionate about it.
Whitaker is awesome ! Took him Fall 17 and learned quite a bit. Did 2 off campus visits: one in downtown and one literally next to campus. Exams aren't that hard if you pay attention in class. Used TopHat for attendance, which counted for your participation. His lectures seem unorganized despite a powerpoint, but the class wasn't that difficult.
No textbook, all readings are uploaded on blackboard. Only thing to pay for is Top Hat which marks your participation and attendance. Class material is simple, self-explanatory, and interesting which relates real life lessons. Whitaker is laid back but make sure to participate in class!
Dr. Whitaker lectures and also tries to have at least one conversation with the class per lecture. The material is interesting, he connects the book readings to the lecture notes. It's lecture and and some Top Hat questions and that's it. No exam is cumulative, not even the final. One tumblr project and you're given about 3 months to do it.
Had to really get used to Whitaker's awkward personality at first, but he turned out to be a great professor. The information is really interesting and the exams are easy. Grade consisted of 3 exams (finished all in under 20 minutes), 8 Tumblr posts, and participation. Pay attention in class and do the reading, easy A. No cumulative exam.
Cool guy but really really boring lectures. The material is easy enough and he goes over what you need to know but it's just pretty boring. Tests aren't that bad but you do need to study the notes you took during the lectures. All tests were multiple choice. Attendance code was used for attendace at the end of the class.
Lectures are long but you watch a lot of videos and actually learn a lot. Gives study guides for tests so its extremely hard to fail and has a lot of extra credit opportunities. He's one of those prof's who actually cares about your grade.
Whitaker is very quiet in class, and all attendance is done on Top Hat. Lectures are a bit all over the place. There are 3 exams, and they tend to have questions from lecture and book, so make sure you read. There is a big project due a few months in dealing with tumblr. Class was ok, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you need to take it.
I enjoyed his class even-though I hate anything with politics. Prof Roy was not bias for any political party and it made the class even more interesting since it would not have any agenda. Fairly easy A . No need to buy the text book if you attend the lecture and take notes. Tests were too easy. Everybody would finish in less than 40 minutes.
So glad I took this class. Prof. Whitaker is a very nice guy. We had lectures on TopHat (for points) but I actually enjoyed going to lectures. Not once in the semester did I not feel like going or wanting to skip. Tumblr project is easy (not due until end of semester), and tests are all multiple choice and fairly easy. Love this class, glad I took!
Prof. Delroi is great. Not only are his lectures informative, but he is quite entertaining. You may not want to attend his lectures but he alwasy manages to say something hilarious on accident which makes the class so enjoyable. You may notice he wears the same outfit for every class, but I think he just likes consistency. He likes to be on script.
This is the star of the Honors curriculum, but it was a rather underwhelming class for the material that it covers. The entire class is graded off three tests (MC + two essays), one Tumblr project, and a participation/attendance grade. Majority is lectures (and most of them are dry) and the tests are very detailed. Go to class and pay attention!
I took his world religion class and his tests were really easy, the topics are also interesting. I am taking now Religion and American institutions and it's an easy A as well. If you take good notes from the lectures and read through them before the exam you will be fine! He also offers a couple assignments for extra credit.
Good lecturer, organized course material, from the class you could tell he's incredibly smart and versed in lots of different areas. Top Hat attendance, 6 TUMBLR blog posts on current events related to the class, and then 3 exams. Overall, a really interesting class with a great instructor, stay on top of your work and you should be fine
The class is graded on very few things like a few discussion posts, a Tumblr project, and tests. The tests are ridiculously hard, and require a group study guide at the least. Super boring lectures, but attendance is worth 20% of your grade so you have to go. Offers extra credit but they're a lot of work for less than 5 points.
Professor Whitaker sure knows how to lecture. He makes sure to get straight to the point with things-definitely a man with much knowledge. Show up to class. READ. Study. You'll be fine. Ask questions, he's a very easy person to talk to- cares much about the education of his students.
(same as Roy Whitaker) If this class isn't required for your major, DO NOT take it! It seriously is NOT worth the double GE credit. The class consists of 3 exams that WILL make or break your overall grade so review EVERYTHING thoroughly. You'll also need to pay for Tophat to do weekly assignments which barely impact your grade.
Tests are 90%, Tophat blog posts are 10%. Test timing is announced 1 day before tests. Tests are 25 questions in 25 minutes. If you fail one test, you can say goodbye to passing this class. Avoid this class at ALL costs. Seriously, the material is boring, professor has zero charisma. So many other classes that are fun, this is NOT it.
Doing my undergrad at SDSU I can confidently say this is the absolute worst GE class I've taken here. Professor Whittaker has no interest in making his lectures engaging, which is why you'll NEVER see anyone open their mic and talk and participate. There's a very tense atmosphere in the class. Avoid this class and don't think about taking it!!
Honestly felt that this class was very fair. If you watch all the lectures and do the reading, I don't see how you couldn't get an A. Grade is made up by three MC tests that are very easy if you watch the lectures/read the material. Weekly participation with only 250 word responses, and if you do all the work you get full credit.
Go ahead and read all the good reviews and take this class regardless. You will enjoy the tense atmosphere in the classroom where no one wants to open their mic to ask a question. This class will guaranteed get on your nerves. Just don't take it. It's really not worth it. There are many more classes that are more interesting and easier.
Everything was very organized and the course was divided amongst weekly journal entries (discussion posts) and quizzes. He posted lectures every week that were straightforward and informative. Everything on quizzes were covered in lectures and textbook. If you put in the effort, you'll do just fine.
Easiest class. Everything on the test was covered on the slides. Only consists of discussion posts and tests but the due dates for them were weeks apart which made it stress free. You only need 1 required text book but he covers most of it if not all on the lectures and slides he provides.
