monotone voice, somewhat boring, but easy straightforward exams
monotone, really have to pay attention in the lectures
easy exam
Thorough teachings.
monotone

He sucks, no hope, no career, so sad...
BORING

thorough lectures; not too hard exams; when we're bored he'll talk about sex!

Good lecturer
likes to talk about sex
monotone, ****e, a dirty old man, office hours are his own dirty fantasies
no emotions whatsoever from this man. I would NEVER take another course with him
irritating, discriminatory
monotonous BUT lectures are very thorough & clear
No Comments
hard tests. monotone . boring. not clear
He should psychoanalyze himself!
SO boring and talks REALLY slow.Class notes are unhelpful, one-worded sentences
very vague lecture notes, not worth writing down. the most boring lecturer i've ever had. monotone, slow speaking. it's difficult to pay attention to his lectures because of this, and he gives exam questions about his lecture material
Grrr. Rude and insulting, unfair tests, but okay lecturer. I think that secretely, he's got some weird psychological disorder (psychopath?)
interesting lecture, always relate things to sex. Will suddenly be attracted by his face during lecture.
very hard tests....lectures are very unclear.....
CAN U TALK FASTER??????????
Good pace and throws in an odd joke here and there.
His notes are rather skeletal but he does explain them well... if you pay attention. However, his exams aren't *hard* as such. They're more along the lines of *tricky*. I do wish the exams would be more straightforward though.
when i think of monotonous lectures, unclear notes, disturbing sexual tangents, leather jackets and combovers- i think Del Paulhus. I was becoming convinced that our friend Del is a robot, but can't robots speak in two distinct tones?
There is only one word to describe this guy. MONOTONE
I don't think he's interested in teaching at all. He's slow, never clearly answers questions, and his exams are TRICKY. He DID try to put on a fake smile at the end of the term...maybe to earn higher ratings on the teaching evaluations??
I enjoyed his class. I found him quite interesting and occasionally funny. Somewhat hard exams
I really bad prof. Boring, unclear lectures! Hard and tricky exams! I would never take another course with him!
I actually enjoyed his lectures and i did not find them boring at all. The only thing is, is to listen to what he's saying and write them down!!!! Cuz some questions on the exams are not in the text and it is from what he SAYS, not even his notes.
if u go to cls and actually take notes of what he says and not just the overhead notes, the exam is pretty straightforward
very tricky exams. very important to take notes from what he says in the lectures, not just what's written on the overhead slides.
you will be tested on what he says on the lectures, so if you miss any class at all, be prepare to not get some of the questions in the exams even you have fully read the textbook
have to attend every class since lectures and textbook are 50-50 in the exam. have to do lots of self-reading since he never discussed anything from the book in class. exams were tricky.
sooooooooooooo monotonous. never have i struggled so much to stay awake in class. also, some exam questions are weird - sometimes based on minute details from the lecture.
what a ZZZzzzz class.....lights are dim, his voice are monotone.... i was interested in psyc... now i will never take it anymore...if you are looking for a nice looking prof... no.. he is not the one... Exams are hard.....
Not the greatest prof
Very clear and straightforward. Exams are easy enough if you come to class and pay attention. I really liked his class.
Speaks in a slightly monotonous voice, but tosses in a dirty joke that makes you sit up and take notice. Not bad.
brilliant prof! monotone yes, boring no. pay attention, learn a lot! sweeet man.
his tests are hard!

not a bad prof...kinda boring at times but he does throw in a joke every now and then...his exams aren't easy so study well
probably the most boring professor I have ever had. Questions on the exam include things he may or may not have mentioned once in class. don't expect to get an A unless you brought a tape recorder to class...
Oh my goodness! Never have I come across sucha useless professor. Absolutely no knowledge of the equipment used in class lectures, always at least 5 minutes late, class frequently cancelled due to technical difficulties. Don't get me started on midterms
No Comments
Boring, dreadful and a complete waste of your time! What an insult to psychology and people who pay to attend the class!
worst prof ever!! monotone + boring + 5 mins late for each class + wasted 30 mins of class time to fix the VCR + cancelled a class due to technical problem = waste of $$ and time.
he is very unhelpful, boring and unfair. his exam ques r totally unfair, he cancels class all the time to go to "conferences" or because he can't work the VCR. and he really likes relating everything to sex, which got kind of annoying after awhil
Boring. Boring boring boring. Tests generally are 2/3 textbook material, 1/3 in-class material. Not that hard, but have to pay attention (which is hard when your teacher is so boring).
boring.. most of the time^ sometimes cracks some jokes.. but ... and damn mc tests.. pull my avg down so much.. i hate mc tests.
This class will turn you off from psychology forever! he has no respect for people and does not even care for your comments during class. He doesn't want to be there and he is wasting your time and money letting you know how much he hates teaching!
This prof. is a boring one and makes psychology seem like a boring subject when it's actually very interesting. Don't skip his classes though as he bases exactly 1/3 of his midterms & exams are based on lecture notes.
Boring prof. Hard exams.
i know he sounds boring at a superficial level, but then if u can make urself concentrate, then u'll know he's quite interesting. try to sit in the front and join the discussion. many questions straight out of study guide. lecture questions are difficult
I have to agree he's monotonic, but I don't think he turns you away from psyc forever. I find his course interesting. I also disagree that people can't get A+ from him. I made it, even though I cram at the very last minute.
You don't know monotonous until you hear him talk. Extremely boring, but I also found his notes to be very clear.
So boring, and not nice either. When he was explaining how people get their political views, it seemed he was trying to push his own views on to the class. Avoid him at all costs.
i dont find him hard` he gives out easy questions on midterms n finals!he just gives quests straight from the study guide! i was surprised to see those questions on his tests~ but one bad things abt him is dat borin' lectures...but hv to attend to do well
Paulhus isn't such a bad Psych professor. I had him for second term and he proved to be a MUCH better lecturer than Graf. Paulhus contributed to the textbook so he knows what he's talking about and his tests were easy if you studied.
He seems a nicer guy to approach than he appears to be. Tricky MC on lectures. Overall not a bad prof. However I am not surprised if a robot speaks like him.
During class, people start trickling out at a steady rate. At one point, I'm pretty sure that so many people left together, that the next class thought we were finished and started coming in. Monotonous torture for the ears. Try not to feel too bad for him though, because I am convinced that he is incapable of human emotion.
So effing monotonous...however, the course material is very interesting..easy elective I suppose.
Although his voice is very monotone and can be boring at times, he knows his stuff. He wrote the textbook so exam questions are tricky at times. Lectures are important cause some questions on exams are on there. Lecture questions tend to fail alot of ppl.
Very dull
very monotone, but he has a great (although somewhat strange) sense of humour. Not the most entertaining prof of all time but I generally enjoyed his lectures.
what a dumb and pointless course... such a boring guy... could probably put anyone to sleep. lazy as hell . talks very slowly, sounds like he's mentally challenged. Maybe i should counsel him :P
No Comments
what a stupid class! he makes me fall asleep during lectures and at home i have his textbook to make me fall asleep. makes you buy his own textbook so that he can earn some extra cash :/ talks so slowly that he sounds demented
Made me decide to never take another psychology class again.
dull, boring lectures. You have to read the textbook thoroughly in order to get high marks in exams. AVOID him!
He lectures at a slow pace. He has some funny jokes. You will need to read the textbook to do well. 60% is lecture 40% of the test is textbook. He kind of has a monotone drone...coffee helps!
Dr. Paulhus is a great prof. He knows his stuff inside and out and his exams are based on in class lectures and the text...so attendance is a must. One of my favorites.
Although he posts slides online, they're not thorough so GO TO CLASS. Read textbook thoroughly to do well. Not as bad as ppl say he is if you work hard. Exams are very fair, he pulls questions from lecture and txt. He's not that boring.. He tries to be funny sometimes.
I found the lectures entertaining, but they were poorly paced (sloooow), and a lot of time was wasted on irrelevant material (psychopath biographies for instance... interesting, but we can read them on Wikipedia). What peeved me the most about Del was his propensity to ask trivial questions on the exams (i.e which psychopath was NOT Canadian?)
Spent too much class time on irrelevant material. Exam questions were very arbitrary and therefore could not accurately assess comprehension. Forces you to read the text in depth, which is mostly good. Memorize all the little details (including stats) and write down every little factoid he mentions in class.
He's a pretty nice teacher that presents the course material clearly and also trys to show some other interesting research that has been done. If you put effort into his class you can definetly get a good mark.
his voice is soporific. you WILL fall asleep in class.
You WILL fall asleep... in mid/final, ask really detail questions from lectures/video.. so go to classes and don't fall asleep if you can't avoid him.. but he is EXTREMELY monotonous!!!
Incredibly boring. Exam questions are based on VERY trivial and specific facts such as... "What did Zimbardo conclude?" Do NOT believe him if he says that videos are not important. They are. And so is any other little thing he mutters under his breath. His exam is not on broad general important topics, but rather small minuscule unimportant facts.
TERRIBLE prof, avoid at all costs, exams are extremely trivial and based on very specific facts from class or 1 sentence in the book, does not test your understanding but your memorization of useless, unimportant facts and names, write down every little thing he says even if you think it is unimportant (it probably is) he will still test you on it
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! tests u on most useless facts that he pulls from his behind, looks like a killer, voice so boring u will fall asleep, write down EVERYTHING he says and memorize little unimportant dates, facts, names etc everything that normally u would skip over because u dont need to know/is irrelevant, he WILL test u on it! TERRIBLE PROF!!
Nobody is lying when they say he is the worst psych teacher at ubc, midterm/finals test actual useless facts, voice is very boring, any interest in psych prior to attending class will vanish with paulhus, you will fall asleep, dont study concepts just little facts he mumbles under his breath
if you like psych-don't take this prof, if you think you might like psych-don't take this prof, if you want to actually learn something-don't take this prof, if you want to stay awake-dont take this prof, if you want to do well-dont take this prof, if you want to be tested on relevant and useful material-DONT TAKE THIS PROF
ya definitely worst prof that asks dumbest questions on exams and it really ticks ppl off, dont take him if u wanna do good, so boring 2, avoid 4 sure
how this guy got a teaching job i will never know, will definitely bore you to death with his voice, his exams are impossible because he asks such specific details from 1 sentence of the textbook or something he said once in class under his breath, avoid if you like psych or doing well but take him if you like old useless teachers with comb overs
anyone rating this guy above 1 is seriously retarded, he has the monotoneous voice you will ever experience and then tests you on absolutely unimportant questions such as 'which psychopath was not jailed in canada', who the hell cares? dont study concepts because he doesn't care about those just study useless facts and tidbits of stupid information
Seriously, anyone who has gone to this site before and did research on their profs should know that this guy tests on obscure minor details, so if you want to get a good grade, I'd suggest actually reading the text, going to class like any good student would, and to memorize everything about Canadian psychopaths/psychologists that he mentions.
He's not that bad. Course is easy as long as you read the text in depth and attend ALL his lectures (even if it's him showing a video the whole lecture). If you can do those things, you'll do just fine but make sure to study the little details from the text. Materials are interesting.
Not a very interesting class. Fell asleep quite a number of times. Reads off slides and talks in a monotone voice. Exam and midterm not too hard though.
He was a ok professor. But I have to warn you guys, if you want a good mark, do not take him! His questions were like so minor detail, especially the lecture part, super hard. It was like something he talked about for 1 minute, not something he talked for the whole class. Again, if you want a good mark on Psych 102, do not ever take his class.
I would suggest you dont take his class. He reads off the lectures and has a pretty monotone voice. It was so difficult to pay attention. His tests dont really test psych concepts but more the odd details in the textbook or video. I didnt like it at all and I was interested in psych.
I was originally excited to take this class and expected it to be an easy A. This was not the case. The first midterm was a surprise as he focuses on random facts from the textbook. On the final, we were asked the following: which of the following psychopaths was NOT jailed in Canada? Dumb. There needs to be more focus on concepts.
kay whoever said he reads off the slides - completely not true. He is a great prof who explains every concept and tries to spark up interest the best he can! Come to class, read the textbook and you'll do great! this course is very managable, does not selfishly suck up time like some. He also shows cool movies in class toward the end :) - tested
The midterm was all multiple choice so it was hard to show proper understanding of concepts. Instead, small details of different theories were tested. With pre-readings and attendance expect only an average grade. Hard to do well.
whoever said his course is hard clearly didnt know how to study. You need to memorize the text and understand it compeltly and make sure to attend lectures cause he says a lot of stuff that not on the slides. SUPER EASY. GREAT PROF. pretty funny. lectures can be sometimes boring. easy A.
Lectures can be lacking in conciseness and depth, otherwise a knowledgeable professor who's friendly to students. Test questions tend to be ambiguous with emphasis on very trivial details.
Knowledgeable, organised, clear, but boring. Material is pretty straightforward, know the names and key concepts. Mt was fair, tested a few details (he gives sample online). Exam wasn't too bad. Honestly didn't try too hard in this course and got a B. Either read text or go to class... no need to do both
VERY boring prof, super monotone voice, but if you listened he was still easy to understand and I found him hilarious (same sense of dry, dark humour). One MT and final, both had 60% text book, 40% lectures. Lecture questions extremely hard, I guessed most of them.. (Which psychopath went to jail in Canada? etc.. )
A very sad class! No passion, no structure, no kindness!
AWSOME PROF EASY A
His lectures are monotone, but mandatory to attend because he has the tendency to use the most mundane and trivial information on his midterms/exam. Utterly hard class to be motivated in, and it's reflexive through my grade. Not an easy A but a plausible to get a B if you sold your soul to him. I did better in Souza's class... which says something.
Easy A if you just read the book and go to lecture
Dark humor, funny prof. Makes the class interesting because he has extensive knowledge of the course material. Not very approachable for help but the course doesn't require much. It's just memorization from the textbook which is written by him as well. Midterms and final are fairly easy. Easy B.
Probably best if you avoid this prof if possible. Most people fall asleep in his class since his lectures are boring. Only will do well if you memorize every little detail in the textbook and if you jot down everything he mentions in class since he tests you on the little details he mentions for 30 seconds in lecture. Exams are difficult!
SO BORING--turned one of my favorite subjects into naptime/essentially useless as a prof/cares very little about students but loves himself, his textbook, his research, and his country/AVOID HIM--but the class itself is SO EASY
I got 82 on the MT, I just read the book and showed up to class. Barely studied his in-class notes or what he said which is probably why I didn't get 90 on the MT. MT is 40% inclass studd, 60% textbookstuff . Thankfully final isn't cumulative. Don't ever e-mail him, he is completely rude. Overall EASY class, put some work, don't talk to him though.
I used to like psychology when I took it for IB but his class was so boring. I never felt so sleepy in a class before! I mean the content is slightly more interesting than Psyc 101 but still, avoid this prof if you can.
I had to take his lecture without choice, and the only happiness I found in his class is the announcement of his absence. Tip, bring a good quality HEADPHONE and a pillow before you attend.
He is very knowledgable about the subject but very rude to people. So unless you want to be humiliated don't ask questions in class. The exams are ok as long as you read the material and slides. some questions are very unfair Eg. which of the following won a nobel prize? then mentions 4 psychologists which we as firstyear students had never heardof
Lectures are overly boring and the textbook (which is written by him) is overly dense and not that interesting. Exams were very specific and didn't really test much of anything aside from memorization.
Decent allbeit dry lecturer. Can be reasonably friendly and approachable in person, but he's the weirdest professor I've had from the department.
I took his class last year but lectures are generally monotone and dry. Heck, even the textbook is more interesting to read than attending his class and would help you get a minimum B- grade. If you also do the essays and aplia it will boosts your marks quite a bit.
ABSOLUTE worst professor EVER! His tests are almost comical- i.e- "which psychologist appear in the video we watched in class...?" His midterm and final were god-awful. The textbook, which is written by him, is overly dense and pretentious- hammering in theories in areas that should just remain simple. His lectures are pointless.
nap class during first month, really boring and monotone. however it gets better with more involved topics. tests focus on weird information from both lectures and textbooks, but its on memory mostly. awesome class if you have an excellent auditory memory, note-taking skills and lots of self-motivation.
Midterm worth 37, Final, 47. Homework worth nothing. Five percent bonus for doing studies. Don't really need to listen to him in class, though it helps. Memorize the entire textbook and lecture slides if you want 100% in the course (doable with the 5% bonus). "You are responsible for every verb, burp and utterance I may have made in passing"
Absolutely HATED his tests. I'm usually not the type of person who writes prof reviews, but for this prof I just had to. His test are all multiple choice, and you need to memorize EVERYTHING. I got a poor grade in this class is because I took more time trying to understand the concepts not memorize unsignificant details. (which doesn't make sense)
He was a very monotone speaker which made it difficult to follow his lecture. It felt as if he was disinterested in the information he was teaching which intern made me feel disinterested and disengaged. Textbook reading and memorization is key. I failed the midterm by not being well enough prepared so don't take studying for this lightly.
