Hommel uses memes in his lectures and shows awesome TED talks. He doesn't make his students memorize river and mountain names, but focuses on "why things are the way they are because of where they are"... bigger concepts. By far the best BaccCore professor I've had.
He wasn't very clear with his assignments but was always willing to answer any questions and his grading wasn't tough. He's a very nice guy. Probably the best teacher at OSU! His class was always interesting and exciting. He teaches a different method from most teachers. He focuses on the bigger picture. Great teacher and highly recommended!
I knew going into this class that I liked Geography, but I had no idea what I was missing until I had Dr. Hommel. He makes the subject so interesting and fun that everyone attends his lectures even though he posts all his lecture slides/videos on Blackboard. His requirements are very reasonable, yet I feel like I am learning more than ever.
Very different geography class than I think a lot of people were expecting, but in a very good way. It's a little hard to understand exactly what he wants from you on your assignments (this is the first time he's taught a geo class this way I think) but in-class discussions are intelligent and helpful. Highly recommend taking his class(es).
Hommel uses memes in his lectures and is hilarious! He brought guest speakers in for the different countries we studied. The best thing is we didn't memorize names of rivers and boring stuff, we really just learned about the countries. AWESOME PROFESSOR!!
Not what i expected but turning into my favorite class at OSU. Very inspirational.
I don't know what he was trying to teach but I didn't learn a damn thing about the geography of Europe, he mostly talked about why we shouldn't be in college and made us watch TED talks nearly everyday in class. He's a nice guy and he's passionate, just not about the things he was supposed to teach us.
I can see how some students don't like Demian's classes--they're not the typical memorize this for the test format. He bases his classes on critical thinking and big questions not small details and correct answers. I've had two so far and I really liked them, even if I have more questions by the end
Professor likes to take different approach than boring lecture & map quizzes. He entertains the class with his slides and interest. Recommend class with him. Easy 1 page essay each week with him.
Dr. Hommel is awesome. He's a really funny professor and very engaging. He sometimes goes off topic and the class assignments/expectations can sometimes be a bit fuzzy (as well as the grading scale for tests), but overall it was a very good class. And the Plaid Avenger textbook was awesome!
The online class with him is unbearable. He has us read WAY too much and take notes on basically everything in the book (or else you won't do good on the quizzes at all). Ain't nobody got time for that! I feel like we were just told to read and memorize every little detail from the book. There was no teaching involved.
This has been my favorite course so far, Demian is awesome! I would take one of his courses again in a heartbeat! If you do the reading and participate in discussions you're sure to get an A!
This class was a lot of work for a 100 level. Quizes every two weeks and lots of outside work mandatory to do well. Prof, Hommel is funny and engaging and makes class interesting. HOWEVER, the tests are pretty hard for a 100 level course. Wouldn't classify it as an easy A...maybe an easy B. Attendance is basically mandatory for recitation.
The book was fun, but Hommel sucked at teaching. He just didn't give a lot of info and I felt so unprepared for the tests. He was also kinda cocky and tried to act "cool".
I liked Geo106. I felt like we covered so much more than my other classes. The tests were hard but lecture was interesting. Recitation not so much.
Geo350 was one of my favorite classes ever. Very innovative. Highly recommended.
Found his class to be very unstructured, unclear, and miserable. Time was spent watching ted talks videos on world war 2. Haven't learned any geography on the US & Canada which is disappointing for students that want to learn geography. No real clear teaching, assignments are unclear and a presentation is required. Would not recommend his class.
Unlike a normal geography class which can be a simple memorize maps class this class explores the why things are the way they are and where things are the places they are.I have found this to be a very interesting class so far and the best part is that everything is at your own pace turn things in when you want to I would highly recommend the class
Demian is a very nice guy who cares about his students. Its nice to not have due dates on assignments. The class days was pretty much watching videos and then discussing so if you like that format this class is for you. I felt bad actually because every day 20+ students wouldn't show up to class. There is also a presentation you have to give
His class is unconventionally structured but for this reason I got a lot out of it. We watched a lot of videos and had discussions about connections rather than memorizing facts. Honestly, I have learned more about "where and why" in this class then my History classes. I highly recommend the class.
Demian Hommel is one of the most original and engaging professors I have had in my long college career. every part of my experience was enjoyable and I found myself becoming more and more interested in the course material with each passing class. Would jump at the chance to take any of his classes.
Demian is a great professor and his class is very different. There is no Midterms/Final and all you need to do is the assignments(presentation, papers). However, you may learn a lot from doing the assignments. For example, I learned a lot about my hometown while doing research. Overall, it's a good class and he's very helpful even outside of class.
Very nice guy with tons of knowledge. Has actually visited the places learned. Tests were extremely easy. I got a 100% on both the midterm and the final. The topics learned are actually interesting with quest speakers.
At the beginning this class was not what I expected, but it only took one day for me to be hooked! This is one of the most enjoyable classes I have taken! The content of the class is interesting, but my favorite part if the class was Professor Hommel's unique incite to the class and geography as a whole! I loved it and highly recommend his classes!
Very good Instructor. He always entertained the class and I learned a lot from him. His presentations were fun and were always different. Grading was a little funny but that's because he had to use another instructors grading methods. Peace.
Hands down, best class I've taken at OSU. Thinking is mandatory!
Great Class and great teacher
Demian is a fantastic guy who really loves teaching. He will always go the extra mile to make sure you get what you need from the class. Trust me when I say that this is a field course you need to take.
Damian will go out of his way to help you as a student. Great guy. Also he actually makes his lectures interesting, funny, and interactive. Definitely recommend taking any geo class you can with him.
He is one of the most passionate guys, even though I know it's super basic stuff. He makes everything sound so important as well as humorous (lots of memes). This is an easy A to fill a core requirement. Just take it and be happy.
Great prof, very passionate about the topic; lots of videos for lectures, midterm and final are tough since they ask for details from the videos, etc. Make sure you take notes and study!
Great class with a great professor! Would definitely take this class every year if I could!
Much different then any other professor I've ever had at OSU... and I like it. Second class with him and his teachings are very inspirational. Topics are important, especially for a Bac core class. You can tell he really cares about the education of the students and the future of the world.
Having this class online was no fun. All we did was read articles, watch videos, then post a reply on how we felt about them. I never got to see the teacher, never had any kind of online lectures, and in the end didn't learn any of the science behind sustainability. I would only recommend this as a way to get your Bacc Core done with little effort.
Really? I was not expecting to see the teacher in an online class--it's online. I liked the structure and readings/videos. No textbook to buy. I emailed Dr Hommel a lot and he always responded quickly. I liked the dicussions although responding to other posts was challenging sometimes. I'm going to take more classes from him.
Great teacher. If you need to fill a Bacc Core, sign up for his class. One of the best professors I have had. Wish I could take more from him.
Demian is a really laid back guy who is easy to approach and talk to. Despite it being a hybrid course and meeting once a week I still learned a lot about population geography. He's very engaging and has a way with words. His class doesn't have any finals exams or midterms either. I would definitely recommend taking his class if you can.
Hybrid course. Show up to class for participation credit. Online discussion posts weekly, and biweekly quizzes. No midterm or final exam, and an extra credit assignment was offered. Do the work, and it's an easy A. Very engaging course, and interesting discussion. Excellent instructor.
One of the best professors I have ever had.
Easy A. Just do the online e-text reading, show up to recitation, and take the midterm and final with a buddy. Exams are open book, open friend, open google, open everything. If you don't get an A in this class it's due to a lack of effort on your end.
I really recommend taking this class online because it was really easy! Not a ton of time commitment. An online lecture that you read and interact with every week and then a discussion. One mid term, one final, taken online, not cumulative. Need to read the lectures though because test questions are pretty material specific.
- Need to attend the class to take notes (NOTE: you don't need to write everything because he will say what to write on your notes, so just chill) - Exams will be on notes from class and general ideas of the videos that have been assigned to you to watch
Really good. you do have to read a lot. The final and mid term are all online. open book open notes open internet open friends. really nice teacher!
I enjoyed taking his GEO106 class, the curriculum was not difficult as long as you do the reading and make sure to attend recitation. The lectures are not necessarily required, but they are enjoyable and I think by not attending you would be missing out on a good experience.
Demian is an amazing professor. He is authentic, relates to his students well, and is absolutely hilarious. I laughed every single class. There are no tests, only little assignments here and there, but there is a group project that isn't actually that bad! You and a few group members go out and do a service project in Corvallis! Super fun class!
Demian is one of the best professor's I've had. I took him for a synthesis requirement and am glad I did so. He has a great sense of humor and is not afraid to make jokes throughout his lectures. Our grades were based on 2 papers (one is linked to the other) and in-class questions about the reading. He won't bury you with work and is laid back.
One of my favorite profs at OSU. Super easy classes, you learn good material (especially in Sustainability), and he is funny and cares about his students' well being. Doesn't assign more work than you need for a bacc core class. Very understanding guy. Take any class he offers.
This class was a hassle and waste of my time. It is not taught like a traditional geography class and focuses must on political views that I have little or no interest in. If you're thinking about taking this class for baccore credit, choose ANYTHING else!
10/10 would learn from again.
Awesome professor. He didn't choose the meme life, the meme life chose him. Sick dude, super interesting lectures, this class should be renamed "How the world works". Only con- is sometimes top hat glitches and messes up your attendance so you have to work that out. Besides that highly recommend the class, he makes a generic BC class interesting.
His class is unconventional in the structure of the course. A new way of learning and grading through story maps, an innovative and stimulating educational project with no tests. He's real and upfront about the world and his class you cannot go wrong. Easy to understand and approach. You can tell he has a passion for the material and his students
You can definitely tell his passion for the class and the material, however it is very hard to get multiple views of this topic since he focuses very much on one perspective. Do not expect to learn about maps, this class is more about identity and geopolitics instead of straight geography. Class has a very loose structure with no exams.
Demian is a self-proclaimed "academic DJ" who aspires to inspire his students and encourages them to think critically in his classes. He can get a little caught up on tangents and get off topic, but overall I enjoy the change of pace. I encourage anyone else who also feels tired of a traditional class format to do the same.
Dr. Hommel really wants to be "cool" for his students and spends a lot of time talking about how unique and effective his teaching methods are. This costs him some respect but it also means he cares about creating a quality learning environment. Topics were engaging, assignments relevant and interesting. He tries a little too hard but good overall.
Dr. Hommel actually makes a point of saying he knows he's "not-cool" by caring about stuff like equality, empathy and sustainability. You must've missed 50% of his lectures... I would've liked to learn more traditional geography: like the map quizzes he makes fun of. Otherwise, he's one of the best professors I've had at OSU.
Solid professor.
I'm taking this class online. We're using TopHat as our text/homework and I like the structure, but there is a lot of reading involved. There are also lots of short response questions in the second half of the term. The class overall is great. Demian is a great professor. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the amount of reading and short responses.
Took GEOG 331 with Demien and he has been my favorite professor yet! Uses TopHat so you gotta go for participation and has bi weekly quizzes. Makes you use a "Story Map" instead of a final/paper which is really cool because you can pick your topic. He is super hilarious and really wants you to learn!
Professor Hommel is great and is quick to respond to any questions or needs via email or discussions. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and post thorough, weekly discussions and responses to your classmates. You have 5 fairly tough quizzes and for the midterm and final in place of an exam, you have a research summary and annotated bibliography.
Great Prof. Many life lessons to be learned from the class. Take this class if you want to learn about the world Dr. Hommel takes this course to talk about life, education, and life, not so much the Western World
Super nice guy! Fun class, online included. I would definitely choose one of his classes again!
Really enjoyed the class and received great feedback on my papers.
Sustainability for the common good relies on questionable sources from many angles on the subject that need to be taken with a grain of salt. The leftist films reviews and tests steer the conversation to the idea that there is a threatening collapse of society around the corner from environmental and capitalist forces that seem downright absurd.
This course is not on regional geography and promotes the idea there is no "West". It feels more like indoctrination Anti-Western/Anti-religious stance and uses Wikipedia, Ted Talks, John Green Crash Course history videos. Most of your grade relies on a story map with vague instructions. I feel like the name of the course is false advertising.
I really enjoyed Geog300 and recommend this professor (and his TA).
One of the most enjoyable professor at OSU. I would give him 10/10
No tests or quizzes, just TopHat assignments and one final project (rly easy but tedious). The assignments have quite a lot of questions but it's not too hard. Overall I'd say this class is a rly easy A.
Demian Hommel is a great professor that I would easily take any class from again.
Taking this class online was very weird. I had little interaction with Hommel, but anytime I did he was very accessible and helpful. He had to move his whole class into an online interactive textbook, which was tedious but a good way to learn. Pretty engaging
This Prof was teaching online when I took the class but even he said himself that we aren't here to learn the subject but instead because we had to for our bac core requirements. This teacher was great and def one of my favorites so far. Easy A if you answer top hat questions. Its totally fine to miss a few lectures don't even worry about it.
This is a great class. Best bacc core I've ever taken. The Story Map project is tough at first but manageable.
This is my second class with Dr. Hommel and just like his other class I took with him (GEOG300) he made the class interesting and I learned an incredible amount about the subject. I really like the way he structures his class giving you new opportunities to learn and use technology in his class.
Demian was incredibly understanding and always made class fun!
Took an online class with this professor and he was amazing! Would 100% recommend taking a course with him.
I read the ratings by other students and then chose his class but it was horrible. He graded the final bibliography 28/35 just because I didn't answer one question in the summary. On the same day of grading, I redid the summary but he boldly refused to regrade it. He just had to add 2 points for the rewritten summary which could have save my GPA
It was one of the easiest and most fun classes I have taken here in college. Lectures are always interesting. The tophat assignments are long but aren't hard at all. The story map project takes a bit to navigate but after that it isn't hard. Overall great class and great teacher.
This class was one of the most engaging I've ever been in. DH really cares about his students and what they take away from his teachings. Loved it so much, I'm taking another class with him next semester!
This was the easiest class I have taken in college thus far. No exams or quizzes, a few small extra readings in the quarter. Project was very easy and graded based off a clear rubric. I personally didnt entirely enjoy the lectures all that much, but with less than 2 hours of homework per week for 3 credits, I cannot complain.
Prof Hommel is very caring and very helpful throughout the semester. He cares about each of his students and helps them pass and pass with a good grade! I definitely recommend this professor, I took him for Natural Hazards, amazing course with lots of interesting topics!
I love professor Hommel. He was such a fun teacher, and he truly cares about his students. His lectures were enjoyable, he is funny and tries to make things fun. I learned a lot about the world from this class. Easy A that I would reccommend.
I was recommended this professor from my advisor and I am beyond disappointed. The recitation component of this class is a nightmare. The professor denies any responsibility for the most important project of the class and puts it off on to his TAs. There is no consistency in grading or when things are due and you will end up pulling your hair out.
One of best professors Ive had. Appreciate his real approach to teaching. Truly wants every student to get something out of the class for the money they put in. Highly recommend him
Demian clearly states that being a professor is not what he intended to do with his life, so do with that what you will. He uses a platform called TopHat, which makes it easier to follow along in class. There is no final, just a story map project which takes forever to complete. It is not something to save for finals week, start working on it asap.
Hommel very clearly cares about what he's teaching. He also has a tendency to go on tangents and seems very laidback. The workload was incredibly manageable and the material is relevant to the real-world. No tests, no quizzes, just weekly TopHat assignments and one final project. Also lots of extra credit opportunities!!
If you have room to take this class, do it. Insanely easy for an upper level class. Around 2 hours of reading per week (less if skimmed). 1 discussion every week, a quiz every other week (5 questions), a midterm project and final project. Grading on projects very relaxed. Can turn in discussions late if need be. Free textbook. Very easy just read
Demian makes it clear that he really cares about student well being. I appreciate that. Also he takes any constructive criticism for class content seriously and gives plenty opportunities for feedback. You can take away a lot from the class because there is no added pressure of passing a final exam.
Great professor, easily one of the best I've had at OSU. Funny, relatable as well as interesting and engaging lectures. You can tell he cares about his students and the class is overall pretty laid back.
The best professor I've had at OSU. Goes the extra mile to show that he cares for his students and his lectures are engaging and entertaining. Understands that 90% of people are taking the class to satisfy a bacc core and tries to make it a good experience for everyone in the class.
GEOG 203 is not an easy way to fulfill a bacc core requirement, and does not operate on a flexible schedule that many Ecampus students need. Expect to complete 25-30 pages of reading and a discussion post by Wednesday of the week with no acceptions for late work. Grading is tough and instructions are ambiguous.
Overall, the course was ok. Two main projects were midterm and final papers. These papers do not have clear requirements on what specifically the professor is looking for...feel you are designed to fail the assignments. I would take other GE course if you can.
Professor Hommel is one of the best professors at Oregon State. I have taken many of his classes and he has become my favorite instructor. If you complete your assignments on time, and with a reasonable effort, you will do well. He helped me see the possibilities with a geography major and inspired me and many other students. Take his courses!
Dr. Hommel is amazing. His lectures are hilarious and he teaches very well. This class is really easy. Make sure you show up to class, because participation does add up over time.
Demian is an absolutely amazing professor. My major is totally unrelated to geography but GEOG 350 might be the best class I've ever taken. Genuinely incredibly engaging lectures and great use of TopHat which I didn't know was possible. Really cares about students. I used to think geography was just maps- I am forever changed.
Lectures are fun and the class is pretty easy
He was so relatable and funny and chill. I admit it was a little difficult for me to get super engaged with the topic as its not something that really interested me to begin with, but i found him as a person and his beliefs and ideas to be pretty cool. Attendance is important, but homework load was light. We got to do a storybook rather than final!
Overall a fun and easy class. Demian is an interesting character and has a very forward thinking teaching style. He seems to think that people don't want to take his class and tries to enforce attendance, but lectures are interesting and entertaining so I'd happily show up regardless. Easy quizzes and a final project that you work on over the term.
The Human Planet is my favorite class I've taken so far! It's so easy, and the content is interesting. Every week you answer questions from a reading on Tophat, and there is also a manageable final project. No midterms, no final, there is nothing to lose especially if you are just looking for a bacc core.
Professor has most of the assignment through tophat which is easily accessible especially with the information being taught through tophat. Very interesting and a variety of topics that you learn so every week was something new which became exciting.
Professor Hommel is amazing, and he is very interactive but, at the same time, not pushy. He uses Tophat, which is great because if you have questions but don't want to say them in front of the class, you can ask it in top hat during class, and he always answers them. He has weekly quizzes, which are easy if you show u to class.
One of the best professors I've had at OSU. Classes are engaging and really cares about the student. I would take this class if you have a chance.
Great class. Very easy and hilarious if you open your mind to how dumb the world is and how small we are in the grand scheme of things. Professor sometimes rambles on about stuff not related to the course material. When he does talk about course material, it gets very boring. Top hat is used to track attendance. Shout out to air fryers
This class was not what I was expecting, but I'm not mad about it. The professor was very entertaining and down-to-earth. He lectured about topics deeper than just our assigned projects. I learned valuable life lessons in here that I'll take forward with me, which I can't say about most of the classes I've taken here. Highly recommend.
I took this class online so I never actually talked with him, however he was very accommodating and responded to my emails quickly. This class was interesting and very easy. If I needed to , I would take it again.
Professor Hommel is extremely nice and caring. This was an online class, and there were several technical difficulties that affected the entire class. He was professional and kind through it all, giving us all full credit due to the complications. He was a good grader and provided amazing feedback. Would absolutely take again.
Actually enjoys what he teaches and has a great sense of humor. Great teacher overall
This course has only furthered my love for the environment and our connection to it. 203 allowed for me to analyze the course materials and form my own opinions. While a textbook was initially used for quizzes, it seems Dr. Hommel is dropping it. I wholeheartedly recommend this class to anyone seeking a relaxed atmosphere and inspiration.
This course has deepened my love for the environment and our connection to it. Unlike other classes focused on memorization, this class had me analyze the materials and form my own opinions. It seems Dr. Hommel is dropping the textbook after this term. I wholeheartedly recommend this class to anyone seeking a relaxed atmosphere and to be inspired.
Weeks with quizes with content not gone over yet, constantly mixing up due dates, and constantly changing due dates. Most lectures he was saying how he'll have to rebuild the whole class, and he himself said it was a mess and apologized. Outside contact he didn't directly respond to q's and answered with a few words or will brush you off to his TA
Demian Hommel is a great instructor! The course is quite manageable. I highly recommend it for valuable lessons and the potential to earn an A without much difficulty.
Very nice and helpful! I personally found the workload easy to handle, but when I did have questions, he was super kind and respectful!
I took this class to fulfill an upper-level requirement. I highly recommend this professor and this class. The class was organized and fairly easy. 10 discussions (Responses on separate days) and 5 quizzes (5 Qs ea) with an Annotated Bibliography Paper (choice of topic) due for finals (plus a 2-3 page midterm research paper to prepare for final).
Honestly one of the best professors I've had so far at OSU. He doesn't give himself enough credit for what he does to make class engaging and fun, probably because it's a bacc core class. However, any major can and will benefit from this course. Also doubles as a DJ.
Class was graded based on weekly tophat modules (pretty easy), a big-ish project (average), and tophat participation during class (easy but makes attendance mandatory). offered extra credit! I didnt mind going to class at all since demian was very amusing and a great prof. TAs grade everything which can get confusing. perfect bacc core class.
Demian is a good instructor and for the course geog 106, you will have the use of the tophat and a storymap to do the work. His tophat question is very easy and the storymap is very easy , if you follow the instructions , you will get a good grade . No exam on geog 106
love this diva!
Demian is the best; hilarious, light-hearted, understanding. There's a total of 6 assignments, one due every 2 weeks, which is adding to a Story Map project (each time something is due, you're adding a component to the story map) super simple and easy. Really enjoyed his class and he keeps it real. Attendance and participation matters via TopHat
The absolute GOAT. The only teacher I had who actually adapted around the grad strike so that the students didn't suffer as a result. The guy is hilarious and engaging and brings up a lot of interesting discussions. I actually really enjoyed TopHat in this class (besides paying for it). The only class I actually look forward to going to.
Love this diva. He is super funny, very laid back and understanding. No final exam, and the only professor I have had who didn't penalize students for what was happening with the grad strike. He doesn't give himself enough credit for making the class enjoyable. Also doubles as a DJ, go see him at Bomb's!!!!
Canceled the final project because of the grad student strike. Encourages class engagement and finding personal meaning to the subject matter. Attendance is like 50% of your grade alone. One of the easiest and most interesting classes you can take!
Demian is a great professor who makes the class really engaging. The workload is manageable, with weekly TopHat modules and a project. I found Unstuckstudy super helpful for prepping alongside the reading. Definitely recommend this bacc core!
Super funny professor
I wish I could take more of his classes. At the start of class he would play his DJ sets for us. The storymap project is super easy, and as long as you try a little, you should pass easily. He understands everyone is there to fulfill a bacc core requirement, and is quite literally the most iconic professor I have ever had.
Uses TopHat. Decent experience, seems like a nice teacher. GEOG 106 and 103 are basically the exact same classes, for what that's worth. The interactive textbook was fun at first, but then you notice all the typos and fragments of crappy copy/pasting. Also, you end up watching a dozen Ted Talks, all like 20 years old too, of course.
Good guy, unfortunately teaches a boring subject. Interesting. Very Pro AI.
Professor Hommel is by far the best professor I've ever had. He genuinely cares about every student and helping our generation find a place in the world that matters. He is very inspirational and truly puts everything into his work. He has his own textbook he has written (he uses online access through tophot very affordable). Best class!
Demian Hommel is the best professor I have ever had at OSU thus far. He isn amazing teacher and truly a great person, and genuinely cares about our school and his students. Every day that I attended his class I left with a smile on my face (he is hilarious) and new found information I previously had to idea or interest about. Highly reccomend!
Uses Top Hat but if you show up very easy class.
Super great guy.
Really great guy and professor, with very lenient and fair grading as well as a great extra credit opportunity that allowed me to skip the final project. Lectures are entertaining, albeit TopHat heavy. There are 3 main essential assignment's that are a bit time consuming, but other than that course load is fairly light.
He is a great dude. In the class, he will let you make a story map for the natural disaster. If you have question to ask him, he is willing to listen and schedule an appointment with you for the assignment.
one of my favorite class I've ever taken. only consists of weekly tophats and a final project. no tests or quizzes. you are able to do the project on basically anything you want, which made it a lot more enjoyable. definitely recommend the human planet w him!!
Don't take this class if making every lecture is something you struggle with. Attendance required for every lecture; if you have an emergency oh well. He does give a lot of extra credit but I still never liked the policy. Also, this class is very AI-heavy and he will discuss it for most lectures. The assignments were cool, but grading was unclear.
Hands down my favorite teacher to exist. He always made an effort to connect with students, and I honestly found the class conversations to be hilarious (half of in class discussions where about how much people liked him). If i could take every class with this guy, I would. Class course: 3 big projects a term, with little writings every week
This guy is great. He's very personable. The textbook was engaging, and work felt more like a fun side project. You're allowed to be human in this class. You're challenged to look inward and outward. I look at the world and its cultural and economic processes differently after taking this class. Highly recommend the professor and class as a whole.
Hommel is genuinely the best professor I have ever had. I'd say he's the only professor who really listens to his students and adjusts his teaching and coursework based on our needs. There are 3 essential assignments that don't take too much time, and they are very open-ended. 10/10 would take again if I could. Take The Human Planet with Hommel!!
Demian is a really nice person, and he is pretty funny, but the class itself is really boring. There isn't much course material, and it all seems pretty straightforward. The lectures lack substance and are not engaging.
He's really awesome and I really enjoyed coming to his lectures. Only lecture class that still had a full auditorium by the end of the term. Engaging and incredible
This is my favorite professer! The assignemts weekly are just like any other class, and there are three pretty big assignments that are instead of midterms and the final. I like it that way! He is amazing and if you put in effort it is a great class. He's super chill.
Hands down Demian is a diamond in the rough in the sea of professors at this university. Plus every lecture he plans sick mixes (coolest prof/DJ ever). Content wise the lectures connect base level geography and anthropological concepts to numerous global social and political systems. You will have two weekly assignments and three larger projects.
I hate geography and history more than anything but this class was SO much fun- if I can be successful you can too! Weekly chapter readings and activities that are super easy. 3 big assignments make up most of your grade but they are really straight forward and leave lots of room for creativity which makes it less painful. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I absolutely loved this class. I actually looked forward to going to every lecture and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Demian Hommel is such a cool guy, he's a great professor, and he makes the lectures engaging, funny, and interesting. I learned some really cool stuff in this class, and I had a fun time! Plus, its a very chill, easy class overall.
Weekly assignment, amazing lectures, extra credit offered frequently. One of the best professors & DJ's I have had. Highly recommend Goeg103!
A great teacher and a great class. Lectures are captivating and thorough, and Professor Hommel's teaching style is fantastic.
