This class is a pian in the a*$!!! You either have to be a math person or really study hard for this one. The professor uses big vocabulary so it's a litt;e hard to understand althougg it is a lecture class mind you that there are about 150+ students.
good guy and has a good way of reaching to the kids through his stories but after taking him 2 times for 2 diff classes its kinda annoying hearing the same jokes... needs new material
I like Prof. Halcoussis.... He is a cool guy who incorporates jokes and stories into lectures.. He talks kinda slow though and you would wish he would just get out what he is trying to say.. Class was ok.. 150 students and it was half online.
Wonderful professor! Takes a potentially difficult subject and explains it pretty well. Class was interesting when it could have been boring. If you need an ECON 310 professor, pick him, you can't go wrong!
Boring guy, lectures are not very organized. STAY AWAY!
econ majors need this class.only one book little info. taken from that book. he likes failing students. stay away. boring.
has favorites, one book for class, boring and dry. he made up the course cause he believes econ majors or bus majors should be able to interpret data. for all business students this will be the class from hell. soon it will be mandatory to all bus student
From the previous comments, he might communicate differently with a larger class, but for the smaller Econ 500 class, his teaching style worked. Helpful with questions and willing to work with significant exam date scheduling conflicts.
He grades on a curve so thats the grading. In lecture hes pretty funny and even though theres 150 students you can always ask questions. Hes always in office hours and will tell you how to do it. have a question on the homework? he'll do it for you. Not the easiest if you have no concept of Econ
this course is not hard as long as U R organized & UR notes R too. Study d lecture notes & past finals. Also questions he asks in class on exams. To prepare 4 final, ask him to give U more challenging examples 4 regresssions not discussed in order to prepare 4 final.
He's a very good professor. He's not trying to fail his students, he's trying to help them. I do wish he would talk a little faster, but this might be good for someone who does not understand econ. Answers questions even with a big class. Definitly recommended.
Pretty good teacher. He expalings things very well. His tests are very tricky. Read the book carefully for HIS part of the test.. (If you are taking the ECON 160 class with the 3 professors!)
Thank goodness for the curve! If you're taking the class with the 3 professors you'll have a midterm, final, and term paper. Plus a WHOLE BUNCH of Aplia (online Homework). You can also miss classes and listen to them online. I didn't try too hard and still got a C.
He is the most boring prof. in the econ world.. very unorganized.. not helping students much.. fails students a lot.. I would not recommend him to anyone but unfortunatly he is the only one teaching this course.. good luck passing that course..
If you take good notes and study them you should get at least a B. At times he is willing to help and can be unclear. Use his book for the first part of the class (he lectures from chapters 1-5). If you are looking for an easy A, he is not the teacher to take; you will have to put in some effort.

Makes broing material interesting. his exams are little tough, but if u study, u should be fine. Willing to help; go to his office hours. he also adds humor to lecture and sometimes goes off on wild tangents, but it makes class fun. worth taking!
Its hard to sit during this class but the good thing is that he doesnt take roll and his lectures are online, but you dont know whats going on most of the time. if you see him during office hours his actually a super nice guy, but that doesnt make him easy. Average grade in that class is a C
He has a dry sarcastic sense of humor that a lot of people don't get or like. I enjoyed his class, but I do like economics in general. His lectures are boring at times, but I recommend him. Also, I did well with only buying the study guide, instead of the textbook. (and I still didnt use it that much)
I had read it before and now I agree he definitely has favorites and is unfair to those not on his list. You need to know shorthand to take notes in his class, and his exam is based only on his lecture. He is very boring, but tries to joke to make up for it! Knowing what I know now, I would not have taken his class.
The best teacher ever! If you are an econ major you'll love him othervise don't know me and all of my friends loved him.
most boring lectures.. but if you read the book and pay attention you will do good.. but the class is boooring. the hws and the book are not related so you have to figure out the hw on your own.
so bad... not interesting and boring.. not only tough materials but also tough understand his lecture
At first I thought the class was kind of boring, but it got more interesting later on. It's a good class and he's a good professor.
Never went to class - just read the book - and aced it. Can't comment on his lecturing abilities - never sat through one.
The professor is ok. Pretty funny lectures, but he is really bad at teaching. The class was straight forward, and it was obvious what he wanted us to know.
Not a hard class. Just go to class and write down the notes. Don’t need any books at all. He made the class fun. He also explains everything. Hes a good professor. Youll get a good grade, as long as you write down good notes and study them.
It was actually an interesting class and it didn't kill me. He's a really nice guy and very generous on grading the test.
I've had three great econ teachers but out of the 3, I think Halcoussis is the best because he is the most straightforward without frills.
Excellent professor. He makes a potentially boring subject very interesting. You will learn valuable lessons to help you comb through the bunk info you receive from a biased media. Attendance is not mandatory, but paramount to success due to his carefully tailored curriculum drawing on many sources. There are simply to many books to pour over.
This teacher seriously has to be one of the worst ever. Hates being in class as much as us...constantly looks at his watch and looses his concentration. A.D.D??? He cant even explain his lectures because he always gets off topic and he expects us to take notes and to take his test when its all based on his stupid lectures? DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Sometimes boring sometimes interesting sometimes funny. Just take good notes. You don't have to buy any books.
Need to take really good notes or you are screwed. The tests are hard and there is a lot of information that you need to know.
He have to attend class. His tests are a combination of essay, m/c, and T/F questions. Just pay attention in class and study his lectures before the exam and you'll be fine. He won't curve the grades unless everyone does really bad.
This class was interesting because you din't exactly know what you were going to be tested on. Take great notes. Attendance and the book are not mandatory. He's a funny guy however and gives you useful information. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 project, and 1 mini presentation.
I think I really liked Prof. Halcoussis. He questions you only on what he teaches. He's bright and intelligent. Econ department professors suck & he is the only good professor out there. SO take him :)
Not the most rigorous Econometrics class, but a great intro for non-math/econ majors. Lectures directly out of his textbook. Funny guy, was able to finish the whole course even though he goes off on tangents. Big project is 1/4 of your grade; start it early or go crazy finishing it in time. Do extra problems from the book to prepare yourself.
He is a good professor and makes the class fun and interesting. He does go off on tangents a lot, but I personally enjoyed them! Two exams, project, and a 5 minute presentation is what the class consisted of. Questions from exams were straight from the lectures (no textbook is required). Overall, nice and funny guy!!
Professor Halcoussis is great. There isn't really a textbook for the class. Attendance is not mandatory, but since he tests based on his lectures, you pretty much have to go. The class is fun and I agree that he does go off on tangents alot. It was a very fun class and I felt like I actually learned the material.
I AM GLAD WE GOT DR. HALCOUSSIS BECAUSE I AM SORRY TO SAY CSUN IS SUPPOSED TO BE A GREAT BUSINESS SCHOOL; HOWEVER, ITS ECON DEPT. SUCKS. I WAS LUCKY TO HAVE DR. HALCOUSSIS AS A PROFESSOR SINCE ALL THE OTHER PROFESSORS ARE USELESS AT THIS SCHOOL. IF YOU ARE AN ECON MAJOR YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE YOUR MAJOR UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO REPEAT CLASSES
He is very approachable. His tests are directly from his lectures, therefore attendance and good notes are essential. He covers a lot of material, therefore studying for his tests is time consuming. His final is cummulative which is horrible because of the amount of information covered. He's a good professor, he just needs to chill on his tests.
This guys is just horrible. Does not believe in scantrons. Does not believe in curving. And his cumulative final is all about statistics and stupid stories he lectured in class. He will ruin your GPA no matter how hard you study.. His average grade is D he says it himself.
He is nice and approachable person. No book required. Exams based on lectures. Final cumulative. Average grade for this class is C not D, but tests are very hard and they are not multiple choice. NO CURVE WHATSOEVER! I would not recommend this professor even if you are an econ major.
Great Professor. I got an A, with ease. I highly recommend reading the book starting from chapter one not chapter 3, go to the first class after you read chap 1 and 3, trust me. He starts from chapter 3, and everyone gets confused. He seems very boring in the beginning, but it get better towards the middle of the course. For the midterm all yo
He is an awesome professor, his lectures can drag dry and long but overall good. He takes his time to get to know and help you, and is always there. Easy homework, straight forward easy tests. The tests and practice exams are very similar and worth doing. Just go to class, pay attention, and study the practice exam for a good grade. Curves ALOT lol
His lectures can be really dragged out and dry but he's really clear when he explains things. He has the most hilarious examples sometimes too.
Nice guy, explains but sometimes doesn't go into detail. For tests, you should really read the online textbook because most of the info. is in there. If you attend and understand every lecture, it doesn't necessarily mean you will get a great grade so READ the book. He did curve A LOT.
Doctor Halcoussis is probably the best teacher in the Economics department at CSUN. He is as clear and helpful as you're going to get, and his class is all about the lecture. If it's in the lecture, it's fair game for the test. Study from your notes and ignore the textbook, and you'll be fine. Good luck to those who don't show up to class, though.
Best Econ professor! *Waring-his test are difficult*
I agree with 100% of people's comments here, and I must say he is funny and interesting. Great guy.. very caring. The only thing is, I think he's very easy!! :P He prepares students so well, it's the slackers who complain.
Good professor. Clear and organized. If you take good notes, you dont even need the book. No readings required before class and no homework. One midterm and one final. One at home regression assignment and one 5 minute in class presentation, that's it. Tests are cumulative.
Great teacher! Great class! He's definitely one of the best teachers I've had in the economics department. Extremely clear about everything and definitely makes sure that everyone understands what's going on. Class IS somewhat difficult, but if you go to class and pay attention you'll be perfectly fine.
You will be intrigued by his demeanor and laid back attitude, but his tests are the exact opposite. First midterm i failed bad and somehow got a high B on the final but this class is not easy. He is big on regression analysis. The excel project is annoying but presentation is easy, try to make friends in this class.
BEST professor at CSUN! He is hilarious, clear, nice, intelligent and really enjoys teaching. If you go to class and take good notes you will walk away with a good grade and a great sense of accomplishment. He is a very fair grader; his essay style exams are based on comprehension not memorization! TAKE HIM! GREAT TEACHER GREAT PERSON!!!!!!
He is a great teacher. Go to class, take notes, and make sure you have him repeat things you don't understand cause you could get lost if not. Very funny and interesting teacher.
Excellent professor, the best I've had at CSUN. He's the rare econ professor who doesn't assume at all times that he's the smartest individual in the room. There's an organic warmth to the way he teaches; class with him feel more like that time your uncle taught you the secret to card counting in Blackjack than a fluorescent-lit A.M. stats lecture.
Great professor, keeps the class engaged. You would think Price Theory would be a boring subject but he ends up making a 3 hour class enjoyable and worth your time. Great guy, and explains the subject very clearly.
So far the best Instructor at CSUN. He is not just there to get paid, but also to teach. His lectures are very interesting and makes the class engaged. Sometimes I say, how patience he is! Some students ask the same questions over and over again. And he repeats himself as many time as you ask him to do.Oh, & His tests are completely from his notes
This professor knows his material! As long as you take notes you will get an A participation is important to pass this class. He has 1 midterm 1 final both equal to 85% excel project 10% and simple presentation equal for 5%. There's no book but he does provide some chapters to read on moodle. TAKE NOTES and you will pass easily with an A.
His exams are fair, if you study you will pass. He is funny and helpful, would definitely take him again. He is not a tough grader, either.
Prof Halcoussis is one of the best educators I have ever come across. He is very knowledgeable and explains the course material very clearly. He is always willing to help students during OH and after class. Study his notes and read the book (buy an older version). Study 1 wk in advance for tests as they will require full study effort. Best class!
He is very helpful as long as you don't ask him what an answer is, just ask how to come up with an answer. You need to show up to his class as tests are on his lectures, especially in 309. He also has two separate grading scales and gives you the highest of those two grades. If you try you will get a B fairly easily.
This class was not easy at all. The professor is very smart and helpful but he has a very boring monotonous voice and is sometimes not clear on the lectures. Leaves students guessing what's going to be on the exam, which is based on the lecture. There will be one midterm, final, and an easy excel assignment.
Class a mix of Stats and Econ. If you don't need it and don't like those subjects don't take it. However, it's so easy and the professor is smart and engaging even though the material is dry. 1 test, 1 excel assignment, 1 simple presentation, 1 final. Tests are essay questions but come straight from lectures and handouts. No Homework or textbook.
Went to the first class, accidentally went to class twice on guest lecture day, once again for turning in the project paper, and lastly for the final. Passed the class - cake. Just read the whole book. It's ridiculously easy, especially considering it's only 300 pages and filled with baby math.
The class is hard after the midterm, and he explains what you need to know for the tests and how to use the software for the project, so whoever said you don't have to go to class is wrong.
Such a brilliant man, who explains complex topics in the simplest way for students to understand. He goes out of his way to help students and wants everyone to succeed. Show up to class, pay attention, take good notes and you should get a passing grade, if not an A.
You must go to the class to pass his class. You won't pass the class by just reading a textbook. However, his lecture is super boring and not clear, and he always go off the topic. He thinks he is funny or something. It was very painful for me to go to his class twice a week. He is not helpful, but Midterm was not that hard.
This professor is a hidden gem. Absolutely hilarious if you like dry humor. His class consists of 3 tests and 1 homework assignment. If you show up most the time and work on the practice tests you'll pass. Really helpful during his office hours. Not a formula heavy class.
One of the better professors in the Econ departments. He is very passionate about the subject he is teaching and is available outside of class to help out with questions. Professor is very helpful if you need help. This is by far the hardest but most rewarding class I've taken at Csun .
No textbook, power point, handout, or whatsoever for his class. Very boring, but don't act like you are bored because he wouldn't like it, and he would look you down. I am glad that CSUN doesn't force econ students to take econometrics.
A day in Professor Halcoussiss class goes by fairly quickly, because hes an extremely talented and knowledgeable econometrician. He is able to demonstrate difficult and abstract concepts clearly, and often he will use stories to give us some contextual background. Come to every class, take really clear notes, and youll be fine.
One of the most unconventional professors in the Economics Department. He is a very knowledgeable man, though not the best at teaching. The material covered is not difficult to understand, but his explanations can be confusing sometimes. He goes off topic constantly, thereby making it hard to take notes. I would not take a class with him again
Took him for Econometrics and Price Theory. Received an A in both classes. He is a bit monotone, with a dry sense of humor. Expects a lot on his test, but he definitely prepares you for them.
If you got an A in 309 this class will be easy. Just go to class to learn how to use Gretl for the project. Study similar topics in the study guides on the exam's -- 2 or 3 questions from the study guide are on the test. I studied day of the test's and got a C in the class. Choose a topic you know for Gretl project to make it easy on yourself.
What else could you ask for from an econometrics professor? He's helpful, takes time to explain difficult concepts multiple times, and really seems to care about helping his students. The class is not an easy A, but if you work hard and take good notes, an A is possible.
The professor knows his subject matter very well but he's not so great at explaining it and it is difficult to follow along because he doesn't have a clear guide to each section
Outstanding professor. Pay full attention in class, review your notes before each exam and you'll get an A, simple as that. He also asks you to write things down on a piece of paper that you don't understand and hand it to him at the end of class, and he'll answer your question in the beginning of next class.
Great teacher! His lectures are funny and his tests are about the lectures. Class attendance is not mandatory, but you should go if you want to pass the test. His tests are about 30 MC and two essays. He is an easy grader on the essays which is great. He will cross out what is wrong and only grade you on what is correct. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Grade is based on three tests, two mid-terms and a final. No attendance/participation needed. He doesn't know his students names, even if you participate day n night he wont even ask for your name of care about your name. I honestly stopped attending the class after the midterm,i found out that his test questions are based entirely on the textbook.
This professor is a gem, one of the few professors I recommend. Don't have to go to class, but it's helpful. For exam prep, he offers questions & answers to previous tests- Based my studying off these, got an A. He's awkwardly funny and a fair grader. The curve for our class was 1%. It's not for you if you want a free grade, learned a lot.
He's a great professor. He's very clear with his lectures and will answer any question you have. He sometimes goes off topic but is really good about getting back into it. I would 100% recommend you take him.
Professor Halcoussis is really good at what he does, which is explain economics concepts to undergraduate level students. His lectures are based entirely on the assigned text, so it's possible to pass without attending lectures, no attendance is taken. But you will do best if you attend lecture and then read the material. The class is not easy.
Professor Halcoussis is by far the best professor I have EVER had. I am not an ECON major but I honestly LOVED his class. He is an amazing teacher, he is well organized and makes sure you understand what he is teaching. He has no accent and he is easy to follow. He is so smart and such a kind person. I wish he was my teacher for all of my classes.
When it comes to exam everything u been taught is nothing from the book and nothing he taught you in class. His tests are real difficult No curve and no extra credit and the exams you will have to draw graphs and explain your thoughts which is why his class is very difficult, take someone else if you care about your GPA. GoodLuck econ students
Professor Halcoussis is such a sweet guy and he really tries to get his students to understand the subject but when it comes to the tests they are very very difficult. You really have to study on your own. I found that class notes are not enough. get ready to put a lot of time studying. If you do not need this class do not take it!
Halcoussis is really a great guy but his grading system is basically designed to not pass. You must keep up. Midterm 1 is 25% of grade, Midterm 2 is 30% of grade, 5% paper, and final is 40% of grade. As you can see by the grading, you can easily end with a C or F by one exam. There is a study guide but he gives questions not related to the guide.
Professor Halcoussis is an top-notch professor, who communicates the material clearly. He is super friendly, easy to talk to, and leaves time to clarify and ask questions in class. You do need to attend the lecture in order to pass, as everything he tests on is covered in class. It is a hard class and you need to study on your own, this is college
Class grade is mostly based on three tests, there is one paper worth 5% but this is mostly for free points because he didn't seem to be a harsh grader. The only times I used the textbook was for clarification and to use as a reference on the paper. Final grade is based on a letter grade (without + or -). Really need to study for tests!
you can easily fail this class so don't take it lightly. his lectures are clear and he explains great but when it comes to exams they are real tricky if u fail one exam you will not get a A in class because each exam is worth alot. will not take him again thats for sure
One out of two good professor in the economics department of CSUN. Truly a great person who helps you understand. To be honest he's a little too good to be at CSUN. So take him before he's snatched up by someone else.
This is one of the only economics professors that actually took the time to teach during this pandemic. You would need to pay attention and take notes cause Gretl is not easy and you would need to know it for the project. He also provides the book for free GOOD LUCK!
Professor Halcoussis is one of the best professors I have ever had. He starts with bits and pieces, and combines a clear picture from separate things, that start to make sense together. He uses a lot of graphs for explanations, and it is very important to copy them meticulously. You will see the same information on the exams, so very consistent.
Fall 2020: Online. Two midterms, one paper, and cumulative final exam. The book is not mandatory, but neither is attendance and participation. The only way you can get away with not getting the book is if you go to class since he covers all material in class. He explains and answers questions well but definitely (!!!) a difficult class. HARD WORK!
This class is a pretty standard micro class, tests were based on the lectures and there was a short and easy writing assignment. He gives a very generous grading curve on the tests, so people who fail this class literally just didn't show up. Any bad reviews he gets this semester are just from lazy students.
Bad attitude towards students he personally doesn’t like
If you show up to class and study you will do well. I love his teaching style plus he's a funny guy. Would recommend him to anyone taking Econ 310. 2 midterms eat worth 30% of your grade and a final worth 40%.
Hands down, the best professor and class at CSUN; absolutely take his class! He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Use his office hours; they help a ton! Showing up to class is a must, if you want to do well on his midterm/final. The paper is extremely interesting to write, and he prepares you for it well.
